Few factors are as important as fluctuations in aggregate economic activity and exchange rates in determining the profitability of mineral investments. Macroeconamic theory explains how the two factors are interconnected in today's world and in tomorrow's. We can use macro¬economic theory to lessen some of the risks in mineral investments. And in the current state of the world the risks are high. The above paragraph summarizes our argument. Our goal in this paper is to examine the nature of contemporary business cycles so as to explain their implications for the metal industries, particularly the implications for capacity. Thus, our first section examines the workings, causes, and history of the recent economic fluc¬tuations. In doing so we must understand how current world economy is interconnected, that is, how economic events in one country are trans¬mitted to the rest of the world. Our view is that governments and central banks are key actors in the creating of economic fluctuations. Then, in section two, we work out the implications of section one for the metal industries focussing on comparative advantage, trade, and capacity decisions. Over the last fifteen years the world economic system has had slow overall economic growth and has had strangely unpleasant recessions. While future business cycle will not repeat the de¬tailed pattern we have seen, there will be similarities. The similarities need to be under¬stood before investment occurs. The slow growth in the world economy since the early 1970s has aggravated the problems from business cycles, created its own problems, and has partially hidden the effects of other events. Major realignments of currencies are likely to take place over a business cycle. The nature of the causes of the cycle will determine the direc¬tion of change in the exchange rates. For example, whether a USA recession will be accompanied by a weaker or a stronger dollar will be determined by the cause of the recession. The realignment of currencies over a business cycle leads to a realignment of comparative advantage in the metal industries. Thus, not only will world metal consumption vary over the business cycle but the impact on various countries' metals industries will differ consi¬derably. Competitiveness often depends more on the value of the dollar than it does on inherent efficiency and wage rates. Capacity decisions are inherently riskier due to the country specific nature of exchange rate risk. A realignment of currencies changes the pattern of trade if and only if the country with the cheaper currency also has idle capacity. The importance of our topic is indicated by Table 1 which shows the impact of cyclical and exchange rate shocks on the USA metal industry. INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the common term used for the mineral fluorite, which is naturally occurring calcium fluoride (CaF2). It is the principal source of fluorine, the most reactive of the chemical elements, from which a great variety of unique and strategically important chemicals are produced. Commercial deposits of fluorspar are widespread throughout the world, and its availability is essential to the industrial progress of all nations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY In its pure form fluorspar, CaF2, contains 51.1% calcium and 48.9% fluorine, and has a sp gr of 3.18 and a hardness of 4. It is commonly a glassy mineral. colorless, white, or grayish. but may also be various shades of purple, pink, blue, green, yellow, or tan. It belongs to the cubic system mineralogically, and commonly crystallizes into cubic shapes in vugs and cavities, although most of it is massive, with interlocking crystals. The wide scale acceptance of the heavy media separation is due to its simplicity and efficiency. The two most important variables of the process are specific gravity and consistency of the medium. The latter is a function of the settling rate of the media solids. The almost always present clay in the feed and conse¬quently in the medium acts as a stabilizing agent, and its optimum concentration varied between 3-4%.(1,2) Since polymers essentially perform the same function in oil well drilling muds - i.e. to suspend cuttings during drilling - as the fine clay in heavy media separation, this led to the investigation of whether polymers could be used in heavy media separation as supporting agents. During the first phase of the work, it was found that by the controlled addition of polymers, the stability of the heavy media increased without unduly increasing viscosity of the suspensions, thus yielding conditions for more effective and efficient separation. The results of the experiments were reported in a paper at the AIME Centennial Annual Meeting, March 1971.(3) This paper presents the results of the experiment carried out during the second phase of the work.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recently developed a series of validated models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the effects of air-blocking shelves on airflows and respirable dust distribution associated with medium-sized surface blasthole drill shrouds as part of a dry dust collector system. Using validated CFD models, three different air-blocking shelves were included in this study: a 15.2-cm (6-in.) wide shelf; a 7.6-cm (3-in.) wide shelf; and a 7.6-cm (3-in.) wide shelf at four different shelf heights. In addition, the dust-collector-to-bailing airflow ratios of 1.75:1, 1.5:1, 1.25:1, and 1:1 were evaluated for the 15.2-cm (6-in.) wide air-blocking shelf. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models. The effects of air-blocking shelves and dust-collector-to-bailing airflow ratios were identified by the study, and problem regions were revealed under certain conditions. The simulation results could be used for future development of dust control methods, particularly to address respirable silica dust, for a surface mine blasthole drill shroud.INTRODUCTION Surface blasthole drilling can generate considerable amounts of respirable silica dust. These high dust concentrations can be exacerbated by the high silica content as drilling cuts through silica-bearing materials such as sandstone and shale, causing overexposures for miners to respirable silica dust. A review of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) respirable silica dust sample database from 2010 to 2016 for metal/nonmetal mining shows the following overexposure rates for occupations related to blasthole drilling: • 14.1% of rotary air drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (22 out of 156 samples) • 5.8% of rotary drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (9 out of 155 samples) • 7.3% of drill helpers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (3 out of 41 samples) • 7.5% of blaster/shotfirer were overexposed to respirable silica dust (3 out of 40 samples) Of significant interest is an x-ray surveillance study recently completed under the NIOSH Enhanced Coal Workers’ Health Surveillance Program (ECWHSP). This program offered free chest radiographs to surface coal miners in 16 states. Pneumoconiosis was found among 2.0% of the 2,328 screened miners with at least 1 year of mining tenure. Twelve miners had radiographic changes consistent with progressive massive fibrosis, and 9 of these 12 miners reported no underground mining tenure. All but 1 of the 9 miners worked at occupations that were in the vicinity of blasthole drilling, either as a driller, blaster, or blast crew member [1]."

Selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites was achieved under acidic pH's without a specific apatite depressant and without conditioning the pulp with the collector. Concentrates (35-38% P205, 0.8-1% MgO) with high recoveries (80-85%) were produced from Indian and Chinese dolomitic ores. The calcareous and/or dolomitic-siliceous phosphate ores of South Florida and Utah required two flotation stages: one for carbonate removal, as mentioned above, and the other for phosphate recovery from siliceous gangue. Preliminary tests on the South Florida ore gave concentrates analyzing 29% P205 and 0.8% MgO with a P205 recovery of 76%. Data are also included showing the applicability of the process to the dolomitic-calcareous-siliceous Western U.S. phosphate ore from Utah. A concentrate obtained from this ore assayed 30% P205 and about 1% MaO.

Asbestos is a generic name given to six fibrous minerals that have been used widely in commercial products. The six types of asbestos are chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos (Table 1). Chrysotile is the asbestiform variety of serpentine. Crocidolite, amosite, antho-phyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos are the asbestiform analogues of riebeckite, cummingtonite-grunerite, anthophyllite, tremolite, and actinolite, respectively. Although amosite is an acronym for the Asbestos Mines of South Africa (AMOSITE) and does not specify a mineral type, it generally is composed of cummingtonite-grunerite asbestos so the terms are assumed to be synonymous.

Coconut shells are the most widely used raw material for the production of activated carbon used in the gold production by cynanide leaching. There have been efforts to find alternatives to coconut shells. Shells and stones of certain fruits, have been tested. Although promising results to some extent were obtained, coconut shells remain the main source of activated carbon. Türkiye has become a country of interest in terms of gold deposits of epithermal origin. Four deposits have already been discovered and, mining and milling operations are expected to start in the near future. Explorations are underway in many other areas of high expectations. Türkiye is also rich in fruits which can be a valuable source of raw material for activated carbon production. In this study, hazelnut shells, peach and apricot stones, abundantly available locally, have been tested to determine whether they are suitable for the gold metalurgy. Parameters of carbonization and activation have been optimized. Gold loading capacity and adsorption kinetics have been studied.

Alkaline solution rinsing for decommissioning of an acid-leached residue was evaluated by column experiments, neutralization tests and solid characterization by XRD and SEM. It was found that consumption of a strong alkali during residue neutralization was much greater than that required to neutralize the soluble acidity. The excess alkalinity was consumed by solid-phase conversions unnecessary for the success of decommissioning. Alkaline rinsing did not reduce the time requirement for decommissioning when compared with plain water rinsing. Since no benefit is gained to compensate for the additional costs associated with excess alkali consumption, we conclude that strong alkaline solution rinsing is in fact inferior to simple water rinsing.

In past, no serious attempts have been made to study the effects of operating environments on performance characteristics of a mining system. In this paper, proportional hazards model (PHM) analysis technique is introduced which can be used to analyze the effects of operating environments on the performance of a mining system. It can be used to select suitable materials, manufacturers or designs of items for a particular working environment. In this paper some applications of the PHM are discussed with examples from a Swedish mine. Its application for decision making in maintenance is also discussed.

This paper discusses the challenges associated with the design and construction of a dual-cell, “figure eight” shaped shaft in saturated, soft ground for the Northeast Interceptor Sewer project in Los Angeles. The shaft will be excavated to a depth of41 m and used to launch two EPB TBMs. The specifications required concrete diaphragm walls, embedded below the shaft invert, and a grout curtain beneath the wall. To control water pressure and basal stability without a grout curtain, wall panels were embedded deeper than required into a stiff, cohesive deposit. Details of wall panel excavation using a Hydrofraise are presented.

Principles of Operation and Mechanical Features General Mechanical Description Sieve-bend screens are high-capacity screening devices which utilize stationary, concave, wedge-bar screening surfaces. A complete sieve bend is comprised of a feed distribution chamber, a structure for holding the screen surface, and collection chambers or chutes for oversize and undersize materials. In devices used for metallurgical practice, provision is usually made for reversal of the direction of flow over the surface, either by rotating the surface or by changing the feed nozzle position. The size of the unit varies in height from 5 to 8 ft, and in width from 2 to 8 ft. The orientation of the wedge-bar surface is such that the slots between the wedge bars are perpendicular to the flow of feed material over the surface. The feed distribution means is arranged such that the flow of liquid suspension is distributed evenly and tangentially over the width of the screen surface. The vast majority of valuations produced for mineral properties using the net present value method provide an estimate of investment value or use value. Such an estimate can be a long way from the price that the property would actually sell for if placed on the market. Indicators from the market need to be used to validate or modify the net present value calculation if market value is being appraised. The comparable sales and replacement cost methods used in the appraisal of urban buildings generally fail when used in the appraisal of mineral properties. Other methods of sales analysis are introduced. Guidelines for what a minerals appraisal report should contain are presented.

Mississippi Valley Type Pb-Zn deposits are widespread in the midcontinent U.S. and have been mined from the 1800's to present. Some tens of thousands of acres of mined land in the Tri-State District have been designated as Superfund sites as a result of surficial mine wastes and ground waters with elevated levels of metals. EPA considers the surficial mine wastes to be hazardous and a major source of acid mine drainage fAMD) that degrades water resources and threatens human health and the environment. To mitigate potential risks at one site near Galena, Kansas, a group of mining companies who had been identified by EPA as Potentially Responsible Parties IPRPs) proposed subgrade disposal of the mining wastes in shafts and subsidence features. However, this proposal was challenged by the Agency on grounds related to AMD and the potential for degradation of ground water quality. The PRP team developed a program of materials characterization, laboratory-scale leaching, and finally large-scale, pilot testing in the field. Static and dynamic leaching tests at both laboratory scale fusing artificial rainwater under both variably and fully saturated conditions) and field scale (using pH 4.5 ground water) showed that the surficial wastes do not produce acidic leachate and are not a long-term source of metals. Laboratory chemical and mineralogical tests show that the mine wastes contain substantial carbonate, but very limited iron sulfides, consistent with the leach test results. EPA "characterization" tests fEP Toxicity and TCLP) compare very poorly with tests simulating the expected leaching conditions. While these tests would classify the surficia1 wastes as "hazardous, they do not characterize the behavior of the high-volume, low-concentration, coarse-grained materials with respect to environments and disposal options of interest. To be meaningful, characterization of mining wastes must be performed in a manner that simulates the environmental conditions that are actually of interest with respect to a specific decision, such as subgrade disposal in the saturated zone.

In this paper, a number of novel hypotheses that provide a fresh perspective on the characterization of strata movements associated with longwall mining are developed by analyzing subsidence measurements with an influence- function-based computer program. With this influence-function technique, easily obtained surface displacements can be used to determine some of the complicated, expensive, and difficult to measure movements of the immediate roof strata in a longwall panel. The primary hypothesis developed by this analysis proposes the existence of an area of partial roof caving near the edge of a panel called the "edge effect." A second hypothesis, interrelated with the first, promotes the importance of the effect of gate-entry closure on the observed strata movements. Both the primary edge effect hypothesis and the secondary hypothesis concerning gate-entry closure are justified and quantified in an extensive analysis of surface subsidence that uses supporting information from related theories, design criteria and insitu measurements. Next, the edge effect and the gate closure hypotheses are extended further and used to provide an explanation of the complex subsidence interaction of adjacent longwall panels in what is termed a "redisturbed" effect. Finally, in the conclusions of this paper, the importance of accurately understanding these longwall strata movements for proper subsidence prediction or gate design is stressed.

"Why geophysics? We will have to drill anyway." Reliance on geophysical methods for detailed target appraisals will increase as direct surface evidence becomes more subtle. This will create a need for more effective and efficient geo- physical programs. Numerous computer-based techniques that deal with a broad range of geophysical problems are described in the literature. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a framework for the systematic application of these techniques to effect an overall optimization of the geophysical appraisal. The concepts described are not technique specific, but should serve as a guide for increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of any geophysical program. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flow chart of the major aspects of the program described. The three main subdivisions of a 'geophysical program are discussed: (1) survey design, (2) data processing, and (3) data interpretation. Detailed flow charts, outlining the goals, the requirements for meeting the goals, and the steps followed within each subdivision are presented at the beginning of each section. The objectives and type problems of each subdivision are defined, followed by a description of applicable computer methods. . References are cited that give a general cross section of computer techniques available in the literature, and examples are given in each subdivision to demonstrate basic concepts and the use. of computers in solving the type problems.

The way and methods used for the surface mining of bauxite until the end of the twentieth century in the area of Ghiona, resulted in a significant burden to the natural environment, especially in the cases where it covered extended parts of forests and forest areas as well as important geomorphological formations. The impacts from the surface mining of bauxite which in fact constitute the object of this study relate mainly to the interruption of the natural continuity of the land relief and the alteration of the natural geomorphological activities and are due to: a) the alternating excavations with fronts of great heights, b) the depositions of large volumes of waste materials which originate from the revealing of the ore and c) the dense road network constructed in order to get access to the mine locations.

Reduction in the recovery time required and improvements in safety during a longwall face move have compelled coal mine operators to examine and use pre-driven longwall recovery rooms. The recovery entry is developed at the longwall stop position and supported ahead of time so that the required combinations of standing and internal sup-ports can be installed before the longwall face approaches. A calibrated three-dimensional finite element model, developed in conjunction with an underground test area, provided the critical components and design principals for a comprehensive parametric study. The study indicates that vertical, horizontal, and shear stresses concentrated on the outby abutment pillar corner of the recovery room resulting in deformations in the immediate roof above the primary roof support anchorage level. The results of the numerical model and field site observations indicated that the combination of the internal bolting system and the standing concrete supports are critical for the successful and safe extraction of the longwall equipment. Cable supports installed at and angle over the pillars can help stabilize the disturbed zone above the adjacent fender and outby pillars, however; standing supports are required in most sedimentary roof conditions to increase stability and assure a safe longwall extraction.

ABOUT BENTONITE TUNNELLING Much has been written and many learned papers given on this subject whose generic term is Slurry Tunnelling. This paper is about the particular form of slurry tunnelling known as the Bentonite Tunnelling System. This method. of tunnelling was invented by J.V. Bartlett of consulting engineers, Mott Hay and Anderson in 1964. The general principles are incorporated in British Patent No. 1083322. It was not until the early 1970's that serious experimental work was started to prove the technical feasibility of the process. In the U.K. in 1971 Edmund Nuttall Limited started on an experimental length of 3.8m diameter tunnel at New Cross in London. In Germany at about the same time Wayss and Freytag were starting on a 3.7m diameter collector sewer tunnel in Hamburg. In Japan early slurry tunnelling work was carried out in the 1960's. In the early 1970's a large number of slurry tunnels of various diameters were carried out in that country. This paper is being presented at a time when this system of tunnelling has become an accepted method throughout the developed world. As a result of the work carried out so far there is now a large amount of data existing regarding the effects on the ground in the immediate area of the tunnel, settlement at the surface and the ability of the system to cope with ground varying from clays to coarse gravels and containing large erratics such as granite boulders.
