Most modern crushing and grinding facilities are automated to some degree. Some, of course, have a very minimum of automatic control whereas others utilize very complex control equipment. However, with very few exceptions, the re has not been a new basic control philosophy applied in this field in the past seven years. The philosophy has been broadened in scope and applied to larger plants, some of them with data logging and so- called computer control, but almost always the same tried and proven basic control philosophy is the basis for the control system. New types of control devices to better implement the automatic control have been developed and are continuing to be developed. These devices and their application will be explained and the advantages and disadvantages of each will be discussed. Automatic lubrication of plant equipment is most essential, but this paper will not cover these systems. The use of data logging and computer analysis of the data obtained is fairly recent and it is hoped that by careful analysis of this information that new and better basic control philosophy will be forthcoming. This paper will describe the basic philosophy applied in its simplest form to several types of crushing and grinding equipment, and it will describe how it is being expanded to more complex systems. Some of the economics with regard to first cost, return on investment and maintenance will be covered.

Anaconda's experience with percussion longhole drilling in Butte, Montana, has consisted of six phases: 1. Drilling horizontal blast holes in stopes with push feeds. 2. Ring and parallel blast hole drilling in longhole stopes with bar mounted as well as skid jumbo mounted longhole drifters. 3. Ring and parallel drilling in raise climber shrinkage stoping using special raise climber drilling decks designed and built in Butte, Montana. 4. Parallel longhole drilling in horizontal cut and fill stopes with monorail jumbo. 5. Drilling water drain holes between mine levels. 6. Drilling leach holes through caved zones into old stope workings for leaching purposes. 7. Sample hole drilling.

"The Northgate Link Extension project is the third phase of the Sound Transit master plan to extend light rail throughout the greater Seattle metropolitan area. When completed, the Northgate Link Extension will extend the existing light rail system north by about 7 km (4.3 miles) from the University of Washington to the Northgate neighborhood. A general overview of the project alignment is provided as Fig. 1. The project was funded by a combination of federal grants and allocations from local taxes. The general contractor on the project was JCM Northlink LLC (JCM), a joint venture between Jay Dee Contractors, Frank Coluccio Construction Company and Michels Corp. SoilFreeze, Inc. was retained as a subcontractor to provide ground freezing design and construction services.The project involved the construction of two parallel 5.5-m, 25-cm (18-ft, 10-in.) (inside) diameter tunnels using earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) and precast segmental concrete tunnel liners. The two tunnels maintained roughly the same elevation along the alignment and were spaced roughly 12 m (40 ft) apart (centerline to centerline). A total of 23 cross-passages connecting the two tunnels were included at approximate 244-m (800-ft) intervals. Cross passage excavations were elliptical in shape with dimensions of approximately 5.6 m (18.5 ft) in height and 5.3 m (17 ft) in width. The cross-passages were 5.8 to 6.1 m (19 to 20 ft) long as measured between the exterior of the tunnels at springline elevation. Cross passages were intentionally located directly beneath public right-of-ways thus avoiding buildings. Many of the cross passages were located beneath narrow roads in residential neighborhoods with mature vegetation, existing utility structures and piping and limited parking areas. Excavation and support for each cross passage was completed using the sequential excavation method (SEM).The subsurface soil and ground water conditions at the cross-passage locations were described in the Northgate Link Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) prepared by Jacobs Associates and the Northgate Link Geotechnical Data Report (GDR) prepared by Shannon and Wilson, Inc. Soils along the project alignment were glacially overridden and characterized as very dense or hard. Subsurface soils consisted of cohesionless sand and gravel (CSG), cohesionless silt and fine sand (CSF), cohesive clay and silt (CCS) and till and till-like deposits (TLD)."

New global industry standards and regulatory changes regarding mining tailings management are driving installation of tailings filtration plants to decommission existing tailings dams and implement dry stacking. Target of this project was to reduce ultrafine slime tailings deposition. Previous investigation at Samarco concentrator has showed a 35% decrease in tailings filtration throughput when feeding a mix of 95% flotation tailings with 5% slime tailings (compared with 100% flotation tailings), also worsening geotechnical aspects such as material workability during dry staking. Industrial trials using a proper filter aid at tailings filtration plant feeding a mix of 94% flotation tailing and 6% slime tailing (equivalent to 30% of total slime generation) have provided filtration performance maintenance (throughput and cake moisture), and dry stacking the dewatered material. Results achieved will enable life expansion of existing slime disposal structures, as well as potential life of mining extension. Furthermore, reagent chemistry influence is discussed by the light of geotechnical aspects, which has been showing improved KPIs, such as workability, compressibility and permeability.

MSHA is the regulatory Agency which administers the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act. Although MSHA's principles largely derive from this Act, they do not exculsively derive from it. One might expect that our principles are contained in the regulations we have published to implement the Act. To a degree, this is true; but the regulations we have now were developed and published before the current Act became effective. For this reason, as well as others, there are some principles that we support which are not evident in our regulations, or in the Act. One of these is the ALARA principle. This principle requires that all unnecessary exposure be avoided; that is, all exposures should be kept "As Low As Reasonably Achievable." Almost all professionals in radiation control can agree with this broad principle; but it would be difficult to get agreement on a regulation which would translate the principle into industry practice. Rather, our regulations specify a limit to exposure for any individual. For radon daughters the current limit is four working level months per year. By having an explicit limit such as this, the ALARA principle often becomes lost and the limit becomes the goal. The principles contained in the Act are equally broad in scope. The principles apply not only for radiation protection, but also for toxic substances and harmful physical agents. The Act states that standards for such substances or agents shall most adequately assure on the basis of the best available evidence that no miner will suffer material impairment of health or functional capacity, even if such miner has regular exposure to the hazards dealt with for the period of his working life. The Act also provides that, although protection of health must be our foremost concern, other considerations shall be the latest scientific data in the field and the feasibility of the standards. Our regulations reflected similar principles when they were developed and promulgated. From experience with other health and safety laws, Congress realized that setting and meeting an exposure limit may not be sufficient to prevent disease. The Act, therefore, contains a detailed description of additional provisions to be included, where appropriate, in mandatory safety and health standards. One of these additional provisions requires that miners be informed about the nature of the hazards associated with their job and about the means for their own protection. Another provision requires the use of labels and other forms of warning to inform miners about the hazards, about proper precautions for safe use or exposure, about relevant symptoms of overexposure, and about emergency treatment. We have partially implemented these provisions through regulation. The Act requires also that standards shall prescribe protective equipment and control of technological procedures and that they shall provide for the monitoring of miners' exposures. We have implemented this provision to a degree also through regulation. Finally, the Act specifies that, where appropriate, a mandatory standard must prescribe the type and frequency of medical examinations in order to most effectively determine whether the health of miners is adversely affected by exposure. Additionally, when a determination is made that a miner may suffer material impairment of health or functional capacity by reason of exposure, that miner must be removed from such exposure and reassigned. In order to encourage miners to take the medical examination, the Act also provides that the miner shall not suffer loss of pay as a result of being reassigned. This additional provision on medical examinations has not been implemented by regulation for radiation hazards, nor for most other toxic substances or hazardous physical agents. We believe that this conference will provide us with valuable information on medical examinations for radiation exposure, as well as on other considerations to be used in future regulations. We still question whether our basic exposure standard of four working level months per year is adequate to protect a miner's health. This conference is indeed timely because both MSHA and NIOSH have been reviewing this issue for some time. I would like to reemphasize MSHA's commitment to education and training. MSHA strongly believes that miners should be informed fully about the real and potential hazards associated with their work. They should know the nature of the hazard and the means for protecting themselves from the hazard. The Act also emphasizes the need for training miners by requiring that new miners receive 40 hours of training before working underground and 24 hours of training before working on the surface. The Act also requires eight hours of refresher training annually. This training must include information on the relevant health hazards and the potential consequences of overexposure. Before I close, I would like to mention briefly another source of principles that MSHA often consults to obtain guidance for both the development and enforcement of regulations. These are the various court decisions that are handed down from time to time. Two in particular that I want to stress are the recent Supreme Court Decisions on benzene and cotton dust. Although neither of the decisions has a direct impact on mining or radiation, they do clarify some general principles and directions for regulatory agencies, such as the role of cost-benefit analysis and the need for risk assessment. In closing, I wish us all an open exchange of information for a productive and useful conference.

"The use of recycled water in flotation has significant effects on flotation and selectivity because the recycled water contains many dissolved compounds and ions that alter the chemistry of the system. In this study, the effects of calcium, magnesium and sulfate, which are abundant components in recycled water, were investigated on galena, sphalerite and pyrite flotation using pure minerals and a complex sulfide ore by conducting bench-scale flotation, microflotation and zeta potential measurements. The bench-scale flotation tests indicated that higher recoveries of galena and sphalerite are obtained when water is recycled, due to higher concentrations of ions in recycled water. However, there was a critical ion concentration for galena recovery. The microflotation tests showed that galena recoveries at different pHs in recycled water are lower than in tap and distilled water. Pure sphalerite recoveries improved in recycled water in the bench-scale test with ore. Pure pyrite was depressed with recycled water as well. Zeta potentials became less negative with increased calcium and magnesium ion concentrations due to their adsorptions, and the presence of sulfate ions was seen to increase the negative charges of sphalerite and pyrite, conversely for galena. IntroductionWater is among the most important elements for mining and mineral processing. The distance to water sources is one of the major factors for mine site selection. The mining and mineral processing sector needs and consumes large quantities of water. In Chile in 2014, the copper mining sector alone consumed 12.7 m3/s fresh water for 1.189 tons of ore processing, and recycled 74 percent of the consumed water (Chilean Copper Commission, 2015). A plant that does not reuse or recycle any water will require 1.9 to 3.0 m3 of water per ton of ore processed (Gunson et al., 2012). Many stages of mineral processing, such as grinding, gravity concentration, dense medium separation, wet magnetic separation, flotation and hydrometallurgical operations, use large volumes of water (Schumann, Levay and Ametov, 2009).In mineral processing plants, the process water is recycled from the tailings dams, thickener overflows, and dewatering and filtration units. Wet concentration processes can require large quantities of water. Flotation, the most common process, typically takes place at 25 to 35 percent solids by mass. Most flotation plants practice at least some water reuse and recycled. Modern mines and mineral processing operations generally aim for zero water release (Levay, Smart and Skinner, 2001). In most cases, water quality has been found to affect flotation performance, and this interaction remains under investigation."

Calcium carbonate is one of the most widely used industrial minerals in applications like cement, lime, agriculture, power plant fluegas desulfurization (FGD) and construction aggregates. Most applications are generally high-volume and low value ($9/t or $10/st) or less free-on-board (f.o.b.) mine site) uses of this material. Specialty uses of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) are typically referred to as ?performance mineral? or ?extender and ?ller? applications. Primary specialty markets for GCC include paper and plastics as well as a number of construction applications including joint compounds, carpet backing, paint, and adhesives, caulks and sealants (ACS). Other important specialty applications for GCC include rubber, food and personal care products. A new and growing application for GCC is in nonwoven fabrics, where this mineral replaces a small percentage of the polymer. Typical specialty applications for GCC are color sensitive and require extremely white/bright materials. Although deposits of limestone are located in most states, high brightness resources are relatively rare and controlled by a limited group of suppliers.

INTRODUCTION Chuquicamata mine is a large copper open pit located in the north of Chile. It has been in production for more than 80 years and now is in the later stages of its life with declining grades and increasing haul distances. As any old mine with long established organizations and procedures, it has faced one of the most difficult managerial problems: to conduct changes. Since 1994, the new management team has been devoted to a modernization pro- gram focused mainly in restructuring business operations. downsizing the labor force and introducing a mine planning pro- cess consistent with the company's goal. The explicit identification of the latter issue has been made because of the management’s conviction about the importance of it in the profitability of the business. The mine planning process at Chuquicamata mine has evolved from an old manual technique towards a modern computarized system, however the fundamental aspects and the procedures involved in this process have been the same. For in- stance, the cutoff grades policy has not changed during the last said 20 years, regardless of the changes to grade distribution, commodity prices, plant capacities, etc. To review and rethink this process, the strategy was to work with a small group of inside engineers and the management in order to interact with several mining consulting firms. The idea was to open a discussion about the fundamental principles used in the mine planning activities and, at the same time, to explore new ideas to improve the operating practices that have been followed for a long time. Thus, the goal of this paper is to present the mine planning approach that was the result of this work and the improvements that were obtained. THE CHUQUICAMATA MINE The Chuquicamata division is one of the five operations of Codelco and is currently devoted to operating the Chuquicamata mine; a copper open pit, concentrator, smelting and refining complex. It also operates Mina Sur which consists of an open pit mine, a leaching-solvent extraction and electrowinning process. There is also a dump leaching and a Sx-Ew plant for treating the low grade suifide ore (under the cutoff grade) from the Chuquicamata mine. Prior to reviewing the mine planning process, capacities for the Chuquicamata sulfide line were 640 000 tpd of run of mine material, 160 000 tpd of ore and 4 200 tpd of concentrate. This meant a total annual movement of around 230 Mt in the mine and a treatment of 57 Mt in the concentrator with a stripping ratio of approximately 3: 1. The old exploitation strategy consisted of an "open scheme", which means that all benches must have a berm with enough space to allow the traffic of large haulage trucks. This fact implied working with a great flexibility, but the consequences were flat slope angles. One of the reasons for using this operating practice in short term planning was that the grade consistency from the pit has always been a controversial variable. Schedules were designed to meet grade targets accurately and they were modified immediately when deviations become apparent. This reality led to working with a great deal of independent pushbacks and it required flexibility in the traffic system. The cutoff grade policy has been the same for a long time and the figure was 0.5 %CUT either for sulfide or oxide ore. This was the reason why a balance was produced between the mine and the concentrator. The mine is operated principally with benches of 26 m but in the upper part of the pit there are benches of 24 and 30 m. The main production equipment is shovels of 28 and 34 yd3 along with trucks of 200 and 240 st. Regarding the crushing facilities, there are two main systems located inside the pit and an old one in the periphery, close to a stockpile and near the concentrator. In the north part of the pit there is a crusher for waste material and in the north-east area is located the ore crusher facility. Both restrict a significant area of the pit and the mine sequence is considering to move the ore crusher again to the south-east sector where it used to be located. Relating to the waste crusher, the idea is to move it up to a bench near the surface in order to use the same conveyor belt and, at the same time, liberate an important sector. THE MINE PLANNING PROCESS The objective of the mine planning process is to develop a mine plan for the life of the deposit, in harmony and consistent with the company's goal. It includes the origin and destiny of tonnages and grades from the mine(s), along with the necessary resources to carry out this plan such as: fleet requirement, consumable goods, manpower, etc. From the financial point of view, it means to establish the cash flow for each time period of the mine life. That is. the revenue, capital investment and operating cost associated with each period of the plan. The fundamental principles involved in the mine planning pro- cess have been a controversial issue for a long time. One of the reasons for these divergent views could be produced by the difficulty of modeling a complete extraction policy for a geological re- source. This particular problem has to deal with several decision variables that are time dependent. So far, there is no mathematical formulation for managing such a problem, and the approach to solve it is based on a circular analysis combined with certain heuristic tools. So, a global model rather than a formula, requires a clear understanding of mine operations as well as economic theory and its application to a non-renewable resource. In order to manage this complex problem, the mine planning process can be conveniently split off in three stages which are conceptual, feasibility and operational planning. The characteristics of each stage are basically the timeliness in which they are developed and the kind and number of variables involved. Gate-road yield pillars are subject to increases in stress as the longwall face advances toward the pillars. Abutment loading conditions are important to gate-road layout and support design in longwall mining systems. Ground support systems are often designed based on mine experience [1,2]. Convergence monitoring is one method of ground support monitoring that can be used to infer increases in pillar stress. Convergence of a yield pillar was measured regularly over the course of six months as the longwall face approached and passed the pillar. Measurements were collected at eight locations surrounding the pillar. The convergence measurements contribute to the knowledge of when yield pillar abutment loading, caused by the encroaching longwall, is first detected. Knowing when abutment loading begins to yield the pillars can help define when standing secondary roof supports are required for head-gate entry access for specific geologic and mining conditions.

Over the last fifty years, the treatment of enargite concentrates has not received much attention, primarily because of the availability of other clean concentrates suitable for processing with existing smelting and/or leaching technologies. As traditional copper ores have become scarcer, copper-arsenic ore deposits have garnered more interest. Arsenic release is a significant concern during the treatment of enargite concentrates by pyro or hydrometallurgical methods. Enargite is also very refractive in standard leaching procedures. Thus, economical treatment options for enargite concentrates are needed. Preliminary experiments have shown that the acid bake-leach process could be adapted and used for the treatment of enargite concentrates. In this study, low-temperature (100-400º C) sulfuric acid baking of an enargite concentrate followed by water leaching has been evaluated. The results indicate the thermal transformation of enargite to copper sulfate happens during sulfuric acid baking, with most of the arsenic being released from the concentrate into the gas phase when baking at 400º C. The condition for maximum copper extraction (~100%) from the concentrate was found to be 400º C, a sulfuric acid concentration of 0.5 mL/g and two hours baking time. Part of the arsenic was captured in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis proved the presence of some arsenic in the form of claudetite (As2O3) in the baked concentrate. Acid baking of pure enargite behaved in a similar fashion.

Diesel engines are a major source of underground miners? exposure to nitrogen dioxide. In an effort to reduce the exposure of underground miners to regulated and unregulated diesel emissions, primarily particulate matter, mining companies in the U.S. are retrofitting existing and introducing new engines with various exhaust aftertreatment technologies. Different aftertreatment devices, or changing the operating temperature of a selected device, can have unexpected effects on the concentration of nitrogen dioxide emitted by a diesel-powered piece of equipment. This paper provides an overview of the effects different exhaust aftertreatment technologies available to the mining industry have on no2 emissions.

How to connect an effluent conveyance tunnel to riser shaft and diffuser arms of an outfall system is dictated by the ground conditions, which ideally include rock or soil strata of low permeability. Where such favorable conditions are beyond reach, both the complexity of designing and the risk of constructing this crucial system connection increase disproportionally. This paper describes the considerations that went into the approach of connecting a 5-m-diameter TBM drive with the in-river riser shaft of the Annacis Island WWTP New Outfall System in the highly permeable Fraser River sands at hydrostatic pressures exceeding 3 bar.

Subsurface spatial planning is becoming increasingly important in view of competing underground applications. This development is influenced by global agreements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, precise knowledge of the underground space is a basic prerequisite for future applications. The three-dimensional registration and reliable georeferencing of underground infrastructures can establish a holistic geodata basis for such tasks. Those tasks are discussed both for the development of energy projects such as deep geothermal energy as well as for storage applications. Research on geothermal energy has been carried out at RWTH Aachen University as part of the SuperC project in a license field in the Aachen area since 2001. Recently, this research has been extended to include monitoring aspects in the overlapping GEObservatorium Aachen field. The documentation and visualization of underground activities using photogrammetric methods like Structure from Motion is discussed based on recent research in sites for the final disposal of radioactive waste. Finally, both applications provide an outlook on supporting underground projects by using high-resolution geodata.

This report describes research leading to the design, prototype fabrication, and successful in-mine proof-of-concept testing of two improved stench fire warning systems for underground noncoal mines. The stench system, widely used in underground noncoal mines to warn of fire or other emergency suffers several serious shortcomings, including the toxicity of the odorant leading to debility in miners; reactivity of the odorant with iron oxide, resulting in unreliable warning because the odor may fade when transported long distances in steel pipe; lack of control over the rate at which agent is released into the air-stream, resulting in some work areas receiving unbearably high stench concentrations and other areas being missed altogether; lack of visual indication of system status, valve positions, or proper system operation; and excessively long stench transit times. In 1979, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, began research to upgrade the stench warning system. Two systems were subsequently developed which offer significant advantages over current systems.

The Climax Mine is a panel caving mine which has had a long history of incidents of severe ground control problems. The nature of the ore deposit, which lends itself to the caving meth- of of production, a1 so makes the mine susceptible to large scale stress concentrations which are referred to as ?weight? problems. These problems have increased with increased production and also with expansion to deeper mine levels. During the past twenty years the mine has had to learn to cope with these problems in order to remain in operation. A number of practical guidelines and useful techniques have emerged from these efforts. The purpose of this paper is to share a few of these ideas. The Mine is located near Leadville, Colorado on the continental divide at an elevation of 3450 meters. The ore body is a large low grade deposit of disseminated molybdenum sulfide. It measures about 1200 to 1600 meters in diameter and it had an original depth of about 660 mters. The Mine has been in operation since 1918 and the massive nature of the ore body together with its blocky, highly fractured condition made it natural for the caving system to have been adopted for production at an early date. Open pit mining was started in 1973. The total plant has a capacity of more than 50 thousand tons per day, and more than 400 million tons of reserves at an average grade of 0.310 percent molybdenum disulfide remain to be produced.

The first rule of mineral deposits always seems to be: the deposit is never close to the market. With gems and precious metals, this is not much of a problem. But with most of the mineral commodities used in today's world, transportation becomes a major part of the cost to the consumer. In Japan, for example, more than 60% of the cost of coal to the consumer may be attributed to transportation. The purpose of this article is to examine pipeline transportation, particularly mineral slurry pipelines, as a means of getting the mineral to market. Pipelines Today Regulated pipelines in the US totaled nearly 724 Mm (450,000 miles) in 1980 according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Worldwide, more than 210 Mm (125,000 miles) of new pipelines will start construction in 1982 at an estimated cost of more than $150 billion. According to the Bechtel Corp., the period between 1982 and 2000 will see major growth in pipelines of all kinds. In North America, major movements of crude oil from Alaska and synfuels from the Rocky Mountains will require the construction of nearly 16 Mm (10,000 miles) of new pipelines. Nearly 42 Mm (26,000 miles) of new gas transmission pipelines will be needed to tap both US and Canadian arctic gas fields and move the gas to major markets on both coasts. Other pipelines will be required to move additional quantities of natural gas from the Rocky Mountains to more populous regions. Bechtel says more than 24 Mm (15,000 miles) of slurry pipelines will be needed to transport coal from both eastern and western coal provinces to the Mississippi valley and coastal areas. In 1980, 125 companies delivered more than 1 km3 (6.5 billion bbl) of crude oil and 652 hm3 (4.1 billion bl) of products in the US. At the same time natural gas pipelines transported 498 km3 (17.6 trillion cu ft). The reported investment by these companies was nearly $20 billion at the end of 1980. Advantages of Pipeline Transportation The obvious success and vitality of the oil and gas pipeline industry is based, at least in part, on the fact that pipelines are a very efficient and low-cost method of transportation. This fact, coupled with the need for lower cost trans¬portation, has led to the marriage of oil and gas transmission technology and the bulk mineral solids transportation industry. The off-spring of this marriage is the mineral slurry pipeline. Slurry pipelines have a number of advantages over other transportation methods. One of these is the fact that they are buried-out-of-sight, out-of-mind. Second, they are relatively small users of labor because they lend themselves to automation and remote, or even computer control. Third, they offer an attractive economic alternative to other transportation systems. For example, for a 1000 km (621 miles) distance, rail costs of 1?/ km (1.7?/ton-mile) are about equivalent to slurry pipeline costs. But, as the distance increases, pipeline cost per t-km continues to drop while equivalent rail charges remain essentially insensitive to distance. Where existing rail, barge, or ocean ships are available, the cost of new construction associated with a slurry pipeline probably will render it noncompetitive. However, where new rail or other construction is needed, the cost of a slurry pipeline is very competitive. About three-fourths of the cost of a pipeline is in pipe, fittings, and construction. Nearly a fifth of the investment is in pump stations and the remainder is in right-of-way, surface facilities, utility acquisition, communication facilities, and other support areas. The fact that pipelines are capital intensive is, at the present time, a mixed blessing. For example, the delivered cost of coal in a hypothetical project doubles when the cost of money rises from 9% to 17.5% per year. The largest cost element for delivered coal in this example is in depreciation and finance charges. The next largest cost element is electricity to power the pumps, with labor making up the smallest increment of the delivered cost of coal. World Slurry Pipelines The idea of a slurry pipeline was probably first investigated in the latter 19th century, but the first ones were successfully built and operated in the US in the early 1900s. Today, they are fairly common worldwide. Table 1 shows a number of the world's slurry pipelines. An examination of these will further emphasize the fact that pipelines provide a cost competitive alternative where new construction of a transportation system is required. In each of the examples, the desired mineral commodity is located in a remote corner of the world, markets are at a great distance, value of the commodity is not great, and no other transport system is available.

INTRODUCTION The National Park Service (NPS) conducted a research program from mid-1975 to early 1978 to measure alpha radiation levels in natural caves which it administers. Subsequently, a long-term management program was developed which has conducted routine monitoring of radiation levels and has computed employee exposure accumulations in certain NPS caves. The overall program: research and management; was undertaken to evaluate the possible health hazard to cave visitors, interpreters, researchers, maintenance personnel, concessions employees and other workers and to protect their health. The results of this work have been reported extensively elsewhere (see References 1 through 3, 5, 6, 9 through 13, and 14 through 26). This paper deals with the relation of radon gas and daughter produced radiation levels to the cave air flows which mobilize them. These flows are a function of interior cave and exterior ambient air temperatures and pressures and of the cave's geophysical configuration. The low-level, ionizing radiation is produced by minute concentrations of radon and thoron gases which emanate from within caves. Because of confinement, the radiation levels are often appreciably higher than in surface atmospheres. Subsequent radioactive disintegration of the gases into their ionized "daughter" products, which are particulates, permits distribution of the alpha radiation throughout a cave system. The extent and character of this distribution depends upon the particular cave and the air flows which it produces. Thus, the alpha radiation serves as a "tracer" to describe the flows. The flow analysis is divided into two parts: 1) A qualitative description with respect to the two basic geophysical cave types over both long-term (annual) and short-term (diurnal to weekly) periods. 2) A quantitative description of the unsteady, uniform and non-uniform, one-dimensional, incompressible motions for both influent and effluent air flow situations in both basic geophysical cave types. A part of the qualitative description presents "Special Measurement" data: Tsivoglou [vs.] Kusnetz working levels, Tsivoglou individual daughter levels and free ion concentrations, radon gas concentrations, and equilibrium ratios. A great deal of important work has been carried out by Mr. Bobby C. Carson, Cave Radiation Technician at Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky. He reports these findings later in this conference (Ref. 6). Some of his results have been used here to establish the cave air flow analysis. Other National Park Service personnel have made measurements at others of the caves for which data are reported here. All of this work and cooperation has been vital to the success of this research program. It is very much appreciated. THEORETICAL FLOW DESCRIPTION Previously reported research (See Ref's. 20, 21, 23 and 25) has established the qualitative relationship between the alpha radiation in caves and their natural air flows. The radiation serves as a representation of these air flows. Changes in radiation with time represent changes in the main forces which produce the air flows. The quantitative data have substantiated that [all caves in which the primary cause of air flow is due to temperature produced gravity (density) gradients and also having minimal man-made disturbances, experience seasonal variations in airborne alpha radiation. The radiation levels increase in summer but decrease in winter], based upon seasonal air movements through each cave system which occur naturally. Two general types of physical cave configurations which control the air flows have been identified as: 1. Those which go up into a hillside or mountainside: Type I ("Upside-down" = USD). 2. Those which go down into the earth; Type II ("Right-side-up" = RSU). These act to control the air flows seasonally. The summer increase in Type I caves is due to increased air flows, whereas in Type II caves it results from stagnation or reduced air flows. This seeming paradox is explained by the physics of the air flow regime in each cave type and has been detailed elsewhere [Ref's. (20), (22) through (25)]. It[ i] true, in general, that air flow decreases airborne radiation in the [immediate vicinity] in which it occurs. Any paradox results from subsequent distribution throughout the case as to [ how] the air moves through a cave [system] with respect to time and space. Exceptions to the cave air flow "rule" are: 1. Caves in which pressure gradients and pressure fluctuations [predominate] in producing the air flows. 2. Caves in which man-made effects and management practices are superimposed on the natural air flow regime. Man-made disturbances which can alter the natural cave air flows are tunnels, elevator shafts, bore holes, sealed and closed portals, etc. If these are not properly sealed, the natural air flows which they change will totally alter the distribution and seasonal variations of the alpha radiation levels. These exceptions may act separately or in combination.

INTRODUCTION The paper presents a broad overview of the geotechnical site studies required for siting uranium tailings dams. These studies, which are interdisciplinary in nature, touch upon such related fields as: hydrogeology, hydrology, and seismicity. Tailings dams are commonly used to develop tailings ponds for the storage of the waste products generated by mine milling operations. In the past, most tailings ponds have been developed either above ground on dry land, or in existing lakes. In the United States a majority of the uranium mines are located in arid or semi-arid regions and past practice has been to store the wastes above ground on dry land (1,2). Currently, the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (N.R.C.) recommends below ground disposal of uranium waste products, although they indicate that they will consider above ground alternatives (3). In Canada many of the existing uranium mines are located in a wet environment and past practice has been to use small lakes and depressions as tailings ponds (1,4). However, current practice in Canada leans towards above ground, dry-land storage (5,6,7), and the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) guidelines (5) indicate this to be the preferable method. In B.C., where a moratorium on uranium mining has been declared by the Provincial Government, there are no existing uranium tailings ponds. However, both the formerly proposed Birch Island and Blizzard uranium developments would have used dry land storage. Most of the existing non-uranium mill wastes in B.C. are stored behind tailings dams on dry land. The waste products delivered to the tailings pond comprise, the ground-up rock that remains after most of the uranium values have been removed and the excess chemicals used in the milling process. These waste products, which are called "tailings", are normally mixed with water to produce a slurry and then pumped to the tailings pond. Since the uranium recovered constitutes only a small percentage of the ore (usually less than 1%) (8), large quantities of waste rock and associated transportation water are discharged into the tailings impoundment area. Consequently, relatively large tailings pond areas are required for the uranium tailings. In recent years, major advances have been made in the design, construction, and operation of non-uranium tailings storage facilities (9,10,11,12,13,14, 15).
