"INTRODUCTION The Ward copper deposit was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines in September 1943 by John J. Knob, 217 E. Penn Street, Long Beach, N. Y. At that time all Bureau of Mines work on Seward Peninsula was being directed to the exploration of deposits of tin, a metal high on the strategic list. It was not until September 1946 that the Bureau could make a preliminary examination of the Ward prospect.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health installed 39instrumented, fully grouted bolts at six test sites in a trona mine retreat panel to study mine roof stability for the improvement of workplace safety. Variables at each test site included bolt spacing, bolt length, roof span, and location in the panel layout. At most test sites, two rows of instrumented bolts were installed, one in or near the intersection created during development and the other in or near the intersection created during second-pass mining. The most significant factor affecting bolt load was roof span. The highest loads were on the bolts installed in the intersections of the 6-m-wide entry. Mining-induced stress resulting from panel layout was the next most significant factor affecting bolt loading. Minor variations in bolt loading could be attributed to changes in bolt spacing and bolt length. Gas pressure release in the immediate roof contributed to some bolts showing compressional loading during gas bleed-off.

THIS CHAPTER concerns such minor nonmetals as greensand, meerschaum, mineral wool, staurolite, and wollastonite. GREENSAND Output of greensand (glauconite) was slightly higher than in 1958. Open pits of The Kaylorite Corp. (Calvert County, Md.), National Soil Conservation, Inc. (Burlington County, N.J.), and Inversand Co." (Gloucester County, N.J.) accounted for the entire production. Soil conditioning used about 72 percent of the greensand sold. The remainder was used as a water-softening agent. Prices for greensand, f.o.b. mine, ranged from $13 to $70 per short ton.

This Bureau of Mines report presents the results of a study to rank technologies for extraction of alumina from bottom ash and coal shale. The available literature on composition and availability of coal waste was reviewed, and papers pertinent to alumina extraction are referenced. Types of coal waste were categorized by method of waste generation, coal content (heating value), location, coal type (ash nomenclature), and alkaline earth content. The differences and similarities among the categories of coal waste are summarized as to factors that my affect aluminum extraction, especially factors concerning chemical composition, current production, storage problems, and accumulated tonnage. Data available on physical characteristics and mineralogy did not correlate well with the individual categories of coal waste, and discussion on these two aspects is limited to the differences between coal ash and coal shale.

An integrated process for recovering metal from nonmagnetic auto-shredder reject scrap was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. The methods used were air classification, water elutriation, screening, magnetic separation, handpicking, and heavy-media separation. Metal recoveries in this process were projected at 39 percent copper and copper alloys, 53 percent aluminum, 96 percent iron, and 98 percent zinc die cast. An economic evaluation of the conceptual process indicated that a facility designed to reclaim the reject scrap from 200 shredded automobiles daily could be profitable. Total investment in this plant was estimated at $321,000; the discounted rate of return before taxes was 53 percent.

According to Dr. Geller, author of Building Successful Safety Teams: Together Everyone Achieves More (1998), a team of people working together for industrial safety consists of as few as two people or as many as fifteen who have complementary skills, assignments, or abilities for completing a particular task. Effective teams have members who share a common mission and relevant goals, and they share specific methods to reach their goals and accomplish their mission. They also have an evaluation system in place for holding themselves mutually accountable for goal-directed responsibilities.

The Bureau of Mines Minerals Information organization collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7. 1882 (22 Stat. 829) to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Minerals Information activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

"IntroductionIn its investigations relative to reducing the hazards of carbon monoxide poisoning, the Bureau of Mines recently had its attention drawn to a compound2a sold under a trade name for which claims are reported to have been made regarding its efficacy in reducing that type of poisoning in automobile garages. Accordingly, some of the product was obtained and analyzed for its power to absorb, oxidize, or destroy carbon monoxide; and the results are herein reported.Description of ""Compound"" (quoted from manufacturer's circular)While the circular does not actually state that the ""compound"" protects against carbon monoxide, the inference is therein, because each of the two following quotations is below these respective headings; ""Carbon-Monoxide Poisoning,"" and ""Chronic Gassing Among Garage Workers.""The ""compound"" holds chlorine and oxygen gases in solution with formaldehyde, which unites with the hydrogen to form hydrochloric acid., giving an over-supply of oxygen which burns up carbon just as a piece of wood is burned in the fire. The formaldehyde in the composition of the ""compound"" is a great affinity for ammonia and hydrogen sulphide."

To develop and design a bit that will rapidly drill smooth and precise instrumentation holes in soft rock. Approach Use a one-piece bit made by combining a drag bit and a diamond bit. Because a smooth-walled borehole with a precise diameter is needed for borehole pressure cells (BPC) and other borehole instruments, a diamond bit is usually used. However, diamond bit drilling is slow, and the bit will tend to bind when squeezing ground is encountered. On the other hand, the drag bit will cut faster, but the walls of the drill hole will be rough and the diameter will not be as precise. The combination will provide a bit which penetrates as rapidly as a drag bit, but retains the smooth-wall and precise borehole diameter of a diamond bit. How It Works A three-foot-length of EW-size drill rod is centered in a diamond bit by welding it to three equally-positioned spacers at each end of the bit. A drag bit is attached to the EW rod with a standard EW-to-drag bit adapter as shown in the diagram. Three equally-spaced diamond inserts are set to the desired hole size and welded to the diamond bit barrel behind the crown. These inserts increase the smoothness and precision of the hole by cut-ting away any hole closure. Three equally-spaced shims are set approximately 0.020-inch under the overall insert diameter size and welded to the rear of the diamond bit barrel. The combination bit should be used on a diamond drill with either water, mist or air as the coolant.

A neutron meter was developed for monitoring the sulfur content of coal streams. Neutrons from 80 micrograms of californium-252 penetrate the coal, producing thermal neutrons that are captured by atoms of elements present in the coal. The excited atoms emit prompt gamma rays with energies characteristic of the capturing element. These gamma rays are detected with a 6-by 7-inch sodium iodide detector and processed by electronic equipment to produce a gamma ray energy spectrum of the elements. Tests of the meter at a commercial coal preparation plant showed that sulfur in moving coal can be determined to a precision of 0.05 percent sulfur within 2 minutes. Based on this report by the Bureau of Mines, reliability of the coal-handling system proved inadequate for long-term operation, however, and improvements are planned.

"Preliminary examination of the Glass Buttes mercury deposits, Lake County, Oregon, was made in August 1945 at the request of W. S. Lazier, present lessee of the deposit.Most of the prospect openings in the area were inspected. The more significant workings were sampled and napped in detail. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. P. S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is due to S. H. Zimmerley, chief, Salt Lake City, Utah, Metallurgical Division, for analyses of the ores.The presence of quicksilver in the Glass Buttes district has been known since about 1930. The area immediately north of Middle Butte has been superficially prospected by numerous test pits, trenches, shafts, and short adits, which revealed a number of opalized zones. Many of these opalized zones contain weak to strong concentrations of cinnabar. The area has not boon explored thoroughly; no mercury has been produced from any of its deposits.A block of 48 full-size claims has been located to cover a large part of the area in sections 34 and 3, Tps. 23 and 24 S.,R. 23 E.,W.M. These claims, held by, location are owned by H. S. Miller, lumberman of Bend, Ore. W. S. Lazier, 10N. W. 20th Avenue, Portland, Ore., currently controls the property under,a nominal leasing agreement. J. W. McDaniel, 44 Lake Place, Bend, Ore., has done much of the underground and surface exploration on the property.The Glass Buttes district is an area of low relief in the Deschutes River drainage system near the northeast corner of Lake County, Ore. (See fig. 1.) The arid climate is marked by extremes of winter and summer temperature. Water for cane use is not available in the immediate area. Well water, however, can be obtained in limited supply on ranch property 5 miles to the south."

2, Survey of Representative Group of Metal and Non-mental Mines Before proceeding to develop and analyze Emergency Escape System Guidelines, it was necessary to obtain a broad range of information, including both fact and opinion. Although there were many areas to consider, the surveys had three primary goals 1. To determine the current state of underground escapeway planning and execution in American, metal and non-metal mines. 2. To determine, for a wide range of mining conditions, what difficulties can be encountered in complying with present and proposed escapeway regulatory standards. 3. To determine what improvements could be made and what equipment and technology was available to aid in implementing these improvements. To accomplish these goals, three major surveys were undertaken¬ 1. Survey of MESA and State Mining officials, discussed in Section 2. 1. 2. Survey of representative U S metal and non-metal mines, discussed in Section 2. 2. 3. Survey of manufacturers supplying equipment, primarily hoisting, suitable for use in escape systems, the product information which was obtained is discussed in Section 7.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a gas chromatographic method for the rapid and accurate determination of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, and, if present, carbon monoxide in mine air. This method replaces such presently used gas-reaction types as the Haldane or Orsat analysis, offering advantages in terms of precision, accuracy, speed, and convenience.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a simple titration technique for determining the points of zero charge (PZC) on minerals. The technique consists of titrating a mineral slurry with the potassium salt of polyvinyl sulfuric acid (PVSK) in the presence of an indicatory dye and a positively charged polymer. Values obtained by this simple method are in good agreement with values found in the literature.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report discusses the results of research conducted in the USBM experimental mine at its Lake Lynn Laboratory to determine the alarm times of smoke and carbon monoxide(CO) sensors, and a point type heat sensor (PTHS) to slowly developing coal-conveyor belt fires. The tests were conducted at air velocities of 0.44 and 0.97 m/s. The data clearly indicate that smoke sensors provide earlier warning of fire than 10 ppm CO sensors, and that 10 ppm CO sensors provide earlier warning than PTHS. A success rate of 1.0 (indicating detection of every test fire) was obtained for both smoke and CO sensors. For the PTHS, the success rate was 0.57 at the lower air velocity, decreasing to 0 at the higher air velocity. Data are also presented showing the sequence of fire events and detection events at the two air velocities as a function of time. Results show that early detection and warning of underground mine fires will improve the probability of miners’ escape.

The Bureau of Mines conducted heat-content measurements above 298.15° K for dehydrated analcite (NaAISi2O6) to 1,000°K, kaliophilite (KA1Si04) to 1,800° K, and leucite (KAlSi206) to 1,800° K. Heat content and entropy increments were tabulated, and the heat content data, were given in equation form. A first order transition was noted for kaliophilite near 810° K with a heat absorption of 160 cal/mole. Leucite had a second order transition which became complete near 955° K. In this transition a crystal change occurred from tetragonal (low-temperature form) to cubic (high-temperature form).

Iron-ore deposits in southwestern Utah, as the major source of iron ore for western steel plants, were investigated by the Bureau of Mines in 1942-45 in cooperation with property owners and operators and with the assistance of the United States Geological Survey with a view to determining and extending the known reserves. The factual data resulting from that project were presented in a previous report and in a report on the geophysical surveys now in course of publication. The present report has been prepared in response to expressed public interest in the ore reserves of Iron County. Mining began in the district in 1871} but. did not become important until 41 1923. From 1923 to 1946, inclusive) production totaled 10,139,500 long tons. In 1945 the district yielded 1,931,749 long tons containing 52.84 percent iron; in 1946 the corresponding figures were 1,317,671 and 53.75. The deposits lie .in a narrow, 23-mile long belt extending northeasterly from Washington 'County into Iron County along a line of mountains, chief of which are Iron Mountain, Granite Mountain, 'and Three Peaks in Iron. County. The deposits are hematite-magnetite bodies, chiefly in limestone near its contact with the monzonite of the mountain masses, but with a few important veinlike bodies in the monzonite or at the contact. They range in size from small pods to several millions of tons, and in depth from surface or near-surface to a known maximum of 1,300 feet:

Effective in the 1987 Minerals Yearbook, the following changes have been made: "Asphalt" has been deleted; "Greenland" is included in the "Potash" chapter; "Meerschaum" is included in the "Clays" chapter; and "Staurolite" is included in the "Abrasive Materials" chapter. QUARTZ CRYSTAL Cultured quartz crystal production increased significantly in 198?, following 2 years of reduced production. Consumption of domestic lascas as feedstock for cultured quartz crystal increased. Imports of lascas from Brazil also increased. Although no lascas was mined in the United States during the year, the domestic producer supplied material to consumers from company stockpiles. Specimen-quality natural quartz was very much in demand; quartz crystal for this application is discussed in the Gem Stone chapter.

A cooperative research effort was established between the Tilden Mining Company LC, the United Steelworkers of America, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to lower respirable dust levels in an iron ore grinding and concentrator plant. This cooperative effort involved three field studies to evaluate different techniques to lower respirable dust levels. The greatest impact on lowering respirable dust concentrations throughout this facility was achieved through ventilation changes. The most significant improvement was realized by changing the ventilation profile throughout the entire facility. The ventilation to this grinding and concentrator facility was provided by approximately 40 roof fans operating in either the intake or exhaust mode. The operation of these fans was significantly changed in an attempt to pro-vide more of a directional flow pattern throughout the facility, as well as to more closely balance the intake and exhaust air volume. This change accounted for a 31 pct reduction in respirable dust levels in the primary grinding area of the mill. Another successful modification was to improve the sealing of a reclaim tunnel to the outside and by barricading the access point from the reclaim tunnel to the concentrator plant. This minimized the dust liberated in the conveyor tunnels from traveling through the reclaim tunnel and into the plant. These two modifications illustrate the impact that improvements in ventilation can have on lowering respirable dust concentrations in iron ore processing facilities.
