Exports of agricultural products, mostly coffee, continued to account for more than 90% of Burundi's foreign exchange revenue. The country's ban on commercial mining was lifted in 1987. Mining of peat for fuel, limestone for agriculture, and clay for insecticides continued as in previous years. At yearend, Burundi's external debt stood at almost $700 million.2 Amoco Burundi, a subsidiary of the Amoco Petroleum Co., drilled two exploration wells in northern Lake Tanganyika in 1987. No oil was found, but preliminary findings were encouraging enough that further seismic surveys and offshore and onshore drilling exploration were planned in 1988. Any oil or gas finds would have substantial impact on the Burundian economy because a major portion of the country's trade deficit was directly attributable to petroleum and gas imports. The Zaire Government agreed in June to let Amoco Burundi explore Zaire's side of Tanganyika using the same equipment and personnel being used in Burundi.

The Missouri Pb ores are the only domestic Co resource being mined and processed for other metals; therefore, they present a viable short-term opportunity for Co production. Lead, zinc, and copper concentrates are produced from the ore. The Cu concentrate can contain up to 30 pct Co and the Pb concentrate up to 15 pct Co. Since Co is detrimental to the processing of the Zn concentrate; the remainder of the Co is rejected to the tailings. The tailings can contain as much as 50 pet Co originally present in the mined ore. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have successfully tested on a continuous basis a process that recovers a bulk sulfide concentrate from mill tailings. The concentrate contains up to one-half of the Co and from 50 to 90 pct of the Pb, Zn, and Cu. Concentrate weight represents 10 pet or less of the total tailings.

To recover metals as sulfide concentrates from contaminated waste streams using hydrogen sulfide (H2S) generated by the bacterial digestion of waste organic materials. Approach The goal of this research is to develop a treatment method for metal mine effluents that will rival the cost and convenience of conventional lime treatment, and that will provide better effluent water quality, result in less expensive sludge disposal, and allow for the selective recovery of metals.

The U.S. Department of Labor?s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA),through its winter alert program, warns U.S. mine operators and miners at underground coal mines of workplace hazards that can arise when the weather turns colder. MSHA records indicate that, historically, most explosions in underground coal mines occur during winter months. ?The changes in weather can increase the risk of fatal accidents,? says David G. Dye, Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health. ?Each miner and mine operator must take individual responsibility to eliminate the kinds of hazards that can cause fatal accidents in the workplace. Safety is not the other guy?s job?safety begins with you.? In fact, MSHA?s slogan for this year?s campaign is ?Winter Alert Starts Now and Safety Begins with YOU.? This message reminds miners and mine operators of the risks of colder weather and educates them about helping to reduce risks and hazards. ?Safety requires the joint effort of both management and labor,? Dye says. ?Everyone at the mine site must see safety as an individual value and act to ensure a safe working environment.?

An aircraft auxiliary power unit (APU) was used as an exhaust source for evaluation and refinement of sampling and analytical procedures for gas turbine engines. The unit was also used to determine the emission characteristics of APU's in service and to study the effect of fuel composition and combustor design on exhaust emissions. Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, hydrocarbons, aldehydes, particulate loading, and odor were measured at engine operating modes representing the duty cycle encountered in airline operation. Analyses showed good repeatability, and adequate sensitivity was attained in these experiments. Smoke opacity measurements were not taken owing to the lack of a high-sensitivity smokemeter. Results showed that the minimum emission levels occurred with the standard combustor and Jet A fuel. Emission rates were highly dependent on test mode, but emission patterns as a function of test mode were similar for all fuels and combustors tested. A comparison of three identical design production combustors showed a variation in average emission rates of less than 5 pct.

Approach Combine a 10-minute, belt-worn respirator with a stored, larger, long-duration (60-minute) attachment that can be plugged into the 10-minute unit without removing the mouthpiece. How It Works The 10-minute device will be carried by the miner at all times, and the 60-minute canister or attachment will be stored near the miner. In the event of a disaster, the 10-minute device would be donned immediately. The miner would then proceed to the stored 60-minute unit and plug it into the 10-minute unit. CESIUM metal production increased sharply in 1963. Domestic Production.--Cesium metal was produced by The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich., MSA. Research Corp., Callery, Pa., and by Penn Rare Metals, Inc., Revere, Pa. American Potash & Chemical Corp., Trona, Calif., produced some combined cesium and rubidium. This company, Penn Rare Metals, Inc., and Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., produced various cesium compounds. Complete production data on cesium and rubidium and their compounds were not available for publication. Consumption and Uses.-Substantially more pollucite was consumed to produce cesium metal and compounds in 1963 than in 1962 but the overall consumption of pollucite continued to be small.

The distribution of gold in part of the Getchell mine, Humboldt County, Nev., is presented through the statistical analysis of 956 assays of rock cuttings from wagon-drill holes. Two methods to predict grade in undeveloped parts of the ore body are evaluated, and the possibility of sampling bias is tested. The distribution of gold is compared with that in three other Nevada gold deposits of the same type characterized by gold particles mostly of submicron size associated with carbonaceous rocks, and also with that in deposits with coarse-grained gold. Usually, fewer samples of a given type are required to make a satisfactory grade estimate for submicron deposits than for coarse-grained deposits. The economic consequence is that submicron gold deposits are likely to be less expensive to sample and evaluate than coarse-grained deposits.

Data from oil well logs and core analyses were used to quantitatively evaluate formation porosity and water saturation of heterogeneous carbonates and to study the pore geometry and performance characteristics of cores from these formations. Logs and cores from the Madison limestone from 233 wells in three fields in the Williston basin were used in the investigation. A comparison of log and core analyses shows that log porosities are consistently larger than core porosities, and the differences are correlatable with core porosity ranges. Water saturations from logs are usually smaller than the corresponding core saturations by summation of fluids, but the difference is attributable to mud filtrate invasion into the cores during drilling. Petrophysical studies show that the low permeabilities and high residual water saturations in these reservoir rocks are due to their fine crystalline texture and complex pore geometry (heterogeneity). It is concluded that both log and core analyses must be used for reliable evaluation of these carbonate formations.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the 32,270-hectare Cache Peak study area in 1992; the area had been proposed as wilderness. Bureau personnel examined and sampled prospect workings; 50 rock and placer samples were taken during the investigation. The study area is centered about 25 km southeast of Challis, Idaho, in the Challis National Forest. According to May, 1993, Bureau of Land Management mining claim records there were no current mining claims located inside the study area. Up to 100 claims may have been located in the study area in the past. Gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc: Significant analyses, poor exposure precludes resource estimate. Limestone: More than I billion tonnes may be chemically suitable for a variety of uses, markets too distant to favor mining. Dolomite: More than 1 billion tonnes may be chemically suitable for producing magnesium metal, markets too distant to favor mining. Sand and Gravel: Several million m3, but markets and transportation costs do not favor mining. Chalcedonic nodules: Two localities in the study area may be of interest to hobbyists who cut and polish stone. There is no reported past production from the study area.

A portable radon diffusion chamber has been tested with electrical collection of the radon daughter nuclei for enhancement of sensitivity. The detector size was small enough to be worn suspended from the belt. With a battery-supplied high voltage the sensitivity was found to be 1.43 tracks/cm2 per pCi-hr/l of ambient radon at Sot relative humidity. The track densities on the surfaces of the CR-39 plastic nuclear track detectors were found to be non-uniform, making difficult the determination of average densities with high accuracy. The fabrication of electrets for use in the detector was investigated in accordance with published techniques with negative results.

The Bureau of Mines performed a comparative study of nine sites at eight surface coal mines to determine if the presence of near-surface underground abandoned workings resulted in the generation of adverse long-duration, low-frequency blast vibrations. Six of the nine sites had underlying workings, and two had thick layers of low-velocity unconsolidated surface material. Extended seismic arrays were used to identify the vibration characteristics within a few tens of feet of the blasts and also as modified by the propagating media at distances over 1 mile. Production blasts and specially fired single-charge blasts allowed the determination of natural ground frequency and the influence of initiation delay timing. Vibration amplitudes from the production blasts at all sites exceeded historical norms, particularly at the greater distances. This contrasts with the near-normal results from single-charge blasts. Apparently, between-hole time delays were insufficient to separate vibrations from adjacent charges for the low-frequency waves present. Single-charge tests showed that the propagating media produced low-frequency, ground-roIl-type surface waves at nearly all sites. Large blasts at such sites could produce an unacceptable risk of vibration-induced cracks in nearby structures.

The Gates of the Mountains Wilderness study area is underlain by intrusive and sedimentary rocks, mainly limestone. No limestone has been produced from the study area; suitable material is more readily available elsewhere. Small amounts of gold, sapphires, and corundum were produced from a placer deposit along the banks of the Missouri River. The remaining gravel contains low mineral values. Other alluvial deposits along the Missouri River and Beaver Creek contain no identified economic resources other than sand and gravel. Some deposits could provide suitable construction material for local use.

Introduction This Instructor’s Copy contains most of the materials trainers will need in order to use Drill Rig Incident (DRI). It includes suggestions for using the exercise, performance objectives for the training, master answer sheets, a scoring key, and a set of discussion notes that provides additional subject information. Four appendices are also included. Appendix A is the complete exercise problem booklet. It may be reproduced so that every person in the training class has one. Appendix B contains answer sheet blanks. The blanks are furnished if you choose to have the invisible ink answers that appear in appendix C printed on them at your location.3 Answer sheets are consumable. One is needed for each group of three to five persons who work the exercise together. An alternative is for each individual trainee to have his/her own answer sheet. Appendix D contains the 24-question pretest / posttest that was used in the field evaluation of the DRI exercise. Acknowledgment The authors thank Linda J. This is the first of a series of reports dealing with development of a method of strengthening bituminous-coal-mine roof. Later reports will describe the progress made with injecting high cohesive and adhesive bonding agents into bedding planes and mine tests of roof strata strengthened by the bonds formed. The concept of strengthening roof strata in coal mines by inserting steel rods in the form of bolts has been widely accepted by the coal industry. The benefits of increased production and safety derived from this type of roof support has more than justified the increased cost of roof bolting. However, not all coal-mine roof structure is amenable to this type of support, and failures occur owing to the heterogeneity and variable character of mine-roof strata.3/

The Bureau of Mines conducted drilling studies in the Pocahontas No. 3, the Pittsburgh, and a western coalbed to establish the gas migration characteristics for each. Gas pressures in the Pittsburgh coalbed were about 260 lb/in2 and in excess of 550 lb/in2 in the Pocahontas No. 3. Caving in drill holes prevented pressure measurements in the western coalbed. The Pittsburgh coalbed contained intersecting "clay veins" which formed gas pressure cells. Although these geological features hamper mining, they can be used to control the flow of methane into a mine working. Methane control techniques are proposed for the Pittsburgh and Pocahontas No. 3 coalbeds.

The sections of this chapter and the area chapters in volume III contain further details on production. A summary table comparing world and U.S. mineral production also is included. Mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. The stage of measurement used in the chapter is normally what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes for some minerals the product of auxiliary processing operations at or near mines.

Provide the mining industry with a wireless surveying system for increasing efficiency in the drilling of methane drainage or exploration boreholes. Approach The Bureau of Mines has pioneered the technique of methane control by drilling long, horizontal drainage holes from within the mine complex. It was recognized during the early drainage projects that a major portion of the drilling operation was dedicated to hole surveying. In some cases more time was actually being spent on the surveying operation than on drilling. The large amount of time required for hole surveying was the result of having to pump an instrument to the bottom of the hole, then retrieve it with an attached wire line. Naturally as hole depth increased, so did the amount of time needed to perform the survey operation. If the survey operation could be improved it was obvious that overall efficiency in drilling of long, horizontal methane drainage holes would be greatly increased. The Bureau of Mines, therefore, developed, fabricated and tested in an operating coal mine a permissible wireless survey system specifically designed for small diameter methane drainage drilling. The prototype survey system was completed in 1982 and was given the IR-100 Award by Industrial Research and Development Magazine. A second generation survey system is currently being constructed using updated state-of-the-art electronic technology. The second generation system will be more portable, more reliable, easier to maintain, and less costly.

To develop an explosive charge that will effectively break rock in underground mines and that can be safely fired without the use of blast-holes or the need for stemming. Approach The Bureau of Mines developed a non-incendive, cylindrically-shaped explosive charge that will not ignite gassy or dusty atmospheres, even methane-laden air. How It Works Firing unconfined explosive charges in underground mines is prohibited by law since detonation in gassy or dusty atmospheres is extremely dangerous. However, there are advantages in using unconfined charges from both a safety and a production standpoint. Explosives can effectively break up large boulders, rocks and slabs when leveling roof falls and can dislodge overhangs which miners would other-wise have to dislodge manually, exposing themselves to

Techniques developed by the Bureau of Mines for the preparation of high-purity rare-earth metals and their alloys by electrolysis of the oxides in fluoride media are summarized. Cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, gadolinium, and yttrium metals, the mixture didymium, and specific alloys of these metals and samarium with iron, nickel, chromium, and cobalt were prepared. Individual metals were electrodeposited in the liquid state on tungsten or molybdenum cathodes. Alloys were prepared by electrodepositing the rare-earth metal on a consumable cathode, at a temperature above the melting point of the eutectic formed between the rare-earth element and the cathode material. Cells were designed for electrowinning metal products in gram and pound quantities, and methods for continuous electrowinning of cerium and lanthanum were developed.
