"The major thrust of this research is directed towards a better undstanding of the behavior of airborne dust particles in underground mine airways. Figure 61 shows a schematic of dust flow in mine airway. The work included development of a mathematical model of dust behavior in mine airways, experimental study of the behavior of dust clouds and comparison of computer model output and experimental results. Re-entraiment is a secondary source of dust in mine airways and factors affecting re-entrainment are being identified.Investigations have encompassed both experimental and theoretical research into the behavior of dust in mine airways. Experiments were performed in mine airways under both controlled and normal operating conditions (Figure 62). The controlled experiments included the documentation of the concentration and desposition patterns for two types of dust under three different velocities. Real-time dust concentration data were obtained using real-time aerosol monitors (RAM-1) (Figure 63).On the theoretical front, a convection-diffusion model of the dust flow phenomenon in mine airways was developed considering dominant mechanisms affecting dust transport and deposition in mine airways. Mechanisms modeled include turbulent and gravitational deposition, coagulation, and dispersion. Comparative analyses of results of the controlled experiments with the predictions of the mathematical model were carried out. In addition to the overall validity, the adequacy of the individual components of the model, such as deposition in the total and respirable range, and dispersion were examined in light of the experimental observations."

THE MILDEST recession of the postwar period ended in the first months of 1961, and the economy climbed steadily during the remainder of the year. The Federal Reserve Board (FRB) Index of Industrial Production climbed from a low point of 102 (1957=100) in February to 115 in December, a rise of 12.5 percent. But economic activity for the year as a whole was only 1.5 percent higher than the 1960 level, as measured by real gross national product (GNP). Although activity increased throughout 1961, much of it was merely regaining ground lost in the decline during the second half of 1960 and the first months of 1961. The FRB index did not re ain the July 1960 high of 110 until June of 1961. Mineral fuels did not fully share in the economic recovery. The (FRB) crude oil and natural gas index rose only 5 percent between February and December. Although the index of monthly coal production increased 11.5 percent during the year, the February level was so low that total production for the year was the lowest since 1954. Total production of energy measured in Btu's was up slightly (1 percent) during the ear. Coal production was down; production of crude oil and natural gas was up. Calculated consumption paralleled production-total up slightly, coal lower, and crude oil and natural gas higher. The most interesting product developments were in coke and residual fuel oil. The Bureau of Mines studied the problems caused by airborne contaminants from welding exhaust in surface mining operations and investigated equipment designed to reduce existing hazards. Four commercially available welding-fume exhaust units were tested to determine their effectiveness. Results indicated that the four units had the capability of controlling airborne particulate concentrations and bringing them to within allowable exposure limits.

Gas drainage through surface bore¬holes has been the conventional means of methane control for U.S. longwall gobs. However, these vertical boreholes are becoming so costly, and the surface rights so difficult to obtain, that the Bureau of Mines is developing underground gob gas drainage as an alternate means of methane control for U.S. longwal..ls. Holes are drilled into the roof over the panel and on retreating longwalls, towards the working face from a location inby the face. As the longwall retreats, an increasing portion of the hole inter¬cepts the fracture system over the caved gob. A surface exhauster maintains a vacuum on a pipeline parelleling the panel and draws the methane mixture out of the mine. Auxiliary systems of gob gas drain¬age during longwall mining will be essen¬tial for an increasing number of coal mines. Deep and gassy mines often find ventilation insufficient for adequate dilution of methane in bleeder entries. Although this cross-measure method of degasification has been used successfully in Europe, some of the European tech¬niques cannot be directly applied to U.S. mines. This is the first study of its kind in this country.

To a greater or lesser extent, the economies of the smaller Caribbean Island countries continued to have common problems. These included unemployment, inflation, foreign exchange shortages, trade deficits, and unstable world prices for their exports. Declining prices for petroleum provided some relief from scarce foreign exchange. Overall, the mineral sector remained stable. The Amerada Hess Corp. crude oil transshipment terminal on St. Lucia was completed during 1981. However, there were no shipments during the year. No official reason was offered for the delay in opening the terminal, but it may have been related to the world surplus of crude oil that occurred in 1981. There has been no further action on the refinery, which was to complete the island's petroleum complex. During the first half of 1981, an announcement was made that a second oil transshipment terminal would be built on St. Lucia. The report indicated that the terminal was to be financed by Saudi Arabia and include underground storage. After the original announcement, no further information was made available. This terminal, like the Hess petroleum complex, may have been temporarily postponed because of the crude oil surplus.

"It took only 9 years from the first appearance of roof shields on the U.S. longwall mining scene to the present predominance of shield faces. An apparent consequence is the welcome downward trend in accidents related to failures in longwall ground control. The report addresses load prediction, the effects of shield geometry on support loads, factors contributing to ground control, and related techniques. The Bureau of Mines took an active part in the evolution of longwall mining, including developing one of the first shield faces in 1975, the first lemniscatetype shields in 1976, the Mine Roof Simulator completed in 1980, the first shields in steeply pitching coalbeds in 1981, and the first multilift working of a thick coalbed in 1982. The information offered in this state-of-the-art report will assist in establishing criteria for roof support selection. INTRODUCTIONIn terms of roof support technology, the introduction of shields in the seventies and eighties was a major step forward. Table 1 indicates the predominance of shield faces on the U.S. longwall mining scene and its apparent consequence, a welcome downward trend of ground-control related accidents.The rapid progress of longwall technology began in 1975 and is highlighted by a development leading from the caliper shield to the modern lemniscate type. Shields have been gaining preference over chocks since their advent to longwall mining in 1975. Safety and productivity factors favoring shields over chocks are--1. A sheltered working space requiring minimum cleanup work.2. Structural stability that allows advancing without delay even with brushing roof contact and, by controlling all lateral loads, removing the requirement for cumbersome leg restraint and restoration devices.3. Wide hydraulic range of mining height.The development of roof shields in the Federal Republic of Germany preceded and paralleled their rapid adoption by U.S. miners. In 1983, 87 pct of the total production in Germany came from shield faces (1).2 In Great Britain, the National Coal Board introduced the first shield support system in 1977 to initiate Advanced Mining Technology (ATM) and Heavy Duty Mechanization (HDM) programs; as of mid-1982, 44 shield faces were operating, or 7.5 pct of a total of 581 faces CJ_)."

THE South Asian countries of India, Ceylon, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim have a large variety of mineral resources; however, in spite of mineral industry growth during 1964, development of resources remained far short of possible development, and, in terms of value of trade in minerals, the area remained a sizeable net importer. India's mineral industry is by far the most significant; its minerals production in 1964 accounted for more than 90 per cent of the total value of all minerals produced in the area. The total value of all minerals produced in South Asia in 1964 was only about 1 percent of the area's estimated gross national product of $55,125 million. Despite the rather small current contribution of minerals to the economy, development of mineral resources figures prominently in plans for the industrial development of the nations of this area.

Determine the effectiveness of remining operations in reducing contaminant load (acidity, iron, and sulfate) of discharges emanating from abandoned surface and underground coal mines. Background Until the implementation of remining initiatives, most States had regulations that held the operator remining an abandoned site responsible for preexisting acid mine drainage (AMD) discharges. For example, if a mining. company wanted to remine an area hydrologically connected to an existing AMD discharge, the company became responsible, as soon as the site was activated, for treating that discharge to meet effluent standards. If the mining operation improved the quality of the discharge, but the discharge failed to meet effluent standards, the company was held accountable for perpetual treatment. Because of this regulation, most mine operators avoided abandoned sites with minable coal reserves and AMD discharges. However, changes in remining legislation allow coal companies to be released from treatment liability as long as the post-remining pollution load does not exceed the pre-remining level. The Bureau of Mines developed a method for analyzing elastically certain types of protective cabs and canopies used on underground electric face equipment. The method is based on plane frame theory, and to be amenable to analysis by this method, cabs and canopies must contain symmetry about one plane. Additionally, protective structures with one or more top members in the long direction that do not frame into the columns should be approximately twice as long as they are wide and have two or more internal top members in the short direction. The assumptions and limitations of the plane frame method as regards analysis of three-dimensional cabs and canopies are discussed. A step-by-step procedure for application of the plane frame method is given, and three example canopies are analyzed following this procedure. Elastic strengths calculated for the three example canopies compare within 10 percent of those computed by the more complicated space frame analysis. Formulas employed in plane frame analysis of cabs and canopies are given in the appendixes.

The Bureau of Mines developed a radiotracer method for detecting the contribution of selected components and additives to thermally induce deposits of turbine aircraft fuels. Fuels were examined before and after 52 weeks of storage at 130° F. Of particular concern was the influence of aromatic hydrocarbon fuel constituents on thermal-stability quality of jet fuels during storage. A microfuel coker test apparatus was used to thermally stress the test fuels and blends, and the resultant contribution to deposits of selected fuel components, labeled with carbon-14, was determined by radioactive-counting techniques. Ninety-one blends of five test fuels with carbon-14-labeled fuel additives or components were prepared, tested, stored for 52 weeks at 130° F, and reanalyzed for deposit-forming tendency. These additives included two anti-oxidants, a metal deactivator, and a corrosion inhibitor. Of the labeled hydrocarbon fuel systems studied, the greatest reaction was observed in blends containing methyl-and ethyl-substituted indenes. Other aromatic types also showed some contribution to the deposits. Three of the additives showed a marked tendency to degrade and react during storage and thermal stress. A cresol antioxidant, however, barely contributed to deposit formation. Oleic acid interacted with cadmium present in aircraft fuel systems and produced deleterious effects upon the thermal-stability quality of the fuel.

The heat content above 25.0° C up to 1,000° C was measured for six rock types: St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, Holston Limestone, Sioux Quartzite, Rockville Quartz Monzonite, Salem Limestone, and the basalt at Dresser, Wis. The calorimetric data were obtained with an isothermal jacket-copper block calorimeter. The experimental heat content data for each rock type are presented, along with specific heat data obtained from the temperature derivative of the heat content. For the six rock types the maximum deviations of the specific heats at a given temperature were within 10 percent below 575° C and within 34 percent above 5750°C. The increase in the values of specific heat range from a minimum of 13 percent for the basalt at Dresser, Wis. (temperature range, 100° to 1,000° C) to a maximum of 46 percent for Holston Limestone (temperature range, 100° to 870° C).

Provide mine operators with a quick means of identifying the effect of cutting system changes on relative dustiness at the mine face, by developing an interactive computer program for drum-type coal mining machines. Approach A program which simultaneously evaluates machine parameters, coal seam parameters and mine operator-controlled parameters for their effects on relative dustiness has been developed for use on any minicomputer using BASIC computer language. How it works The interactive computer program allows mine operators to make one or more changes at a time to their cutting system to determine how these changes affect relative dustiness of the face. Using this program, mine operators can find the optimum cutting system configuration to minimize dust using their seam conditions and their equipment specifications. The mining machine variables include: number of vane bits, number of gage bits, number of starts, vane wrap, number of end ring lines, rpm, advance rate, ton/min, percentage of time spent cutting per shift, and airflow.

Minimize the effects of underground mine conveyor belt fires by developing methods to prevent automatic fire suppression system failures. The Problem Fire protection is achieved by prevention, early detection, and planned fire-fighting response. Automatic fire suppression systems are one form of planned fire-fighting response. When these systems are properly designed, installed, and maintained they can effectively control fires. Conveyor belt fires account for about 20% of underground coal mine fires. Fire protection requirements have been established for underground locations because of potential for start and spread of fire and the restricted personnel egress in a fire situation. Belt conveyor systems arc potentially dangerous because of the high fire incidence rate, high temperatures, dense smoke, toxic gases, and rapid flame-spread rate. While investigating the conveyor fire suppression problem, the Bureau identified automatic fire suppression system reliability as a potentially serious deficiency within the mining industry. Table 1 lists common failure modes fur three Fire suppression system types. This table summarizes findings of Mine Safety and Health Administration electrical inspectors responsible for inspection of belt protection automatic fire suppression systems. Batteries, contact points, control wires, and electric servocontrols are all prone to failure. Figure 1 shows rock-dust-contaminated relay contact points. This condition is dangerous because of the chance of intermittent failures, which might allow systems to pass annual functional testing, yet fail during actual fire emergencies.

A semicommercia1, high-temperature electrostatic precipitator and adjunct equipment are described, and operating characteristics at 1,470° F and 80 psig are presented for both positive and negative polarity. Removal efficiency for negative corona waS about 91 to 96 percent while that for positive corona was only about 75 to 77 percent. Results are compared with those from bench-scale investigations, and equipment limitations are discussed. Theoretical aspects of the precipitation process are related to the operating characteristics.

The roof bolt system of a mine, if properly selected and installed, can allow for better roof control and reduce the potential for roof falls. Because of this potential to reduce roof falls and improve ground control conditions, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has an interest in the types of roof bolts that are used by the coal industry. Further, NIOSH has conducted research into how various support parameters can affect the number of roof falls that occur, including support type. Today, the five main types of roof bolts installed in U.S. coal mines are mechanical anchor bolts, point-anchor or resin-assisted mechanical anchor bolts, torque-tension bolts, combination bolts, and fully grouted resin rebar. This paper describes each support in detail. Because of the importance of resin in the functioning of the majority of bolts installed, resin grouts are also discussed. Further, trends in the types of roof bolts used are reviewed. Over the last 10 years, the significant trend has been the large reduction in the relative number of mechanical anchor bolts that are installed. These bolts have been replaced mainly by the resin-grouted rebar system. Data are also presented to show the impact of these changes in bolting on the number of roof falls.

Reduce longwall equipment transfer time between panels by utilizing a predriven recovery room, and thus eliminate the premove preparation associated with most equipment recovery methods. Background and Approach The recovery point for a retreating longwall is a predetermined position near the end of the panel where mining is terminated and equipment is disassembled and removed. However, to prepare for equipment removal at the recovery point, bolting and wire meshing arc required before the recovery point is reached. Usually, preparations for equipment recovery begin about 35 ft from the recovery point, significantly impeding the normal rate of advance of the longwall and, consequently, production. Recently, BethEnergy Mines, Inc., and the Bureau of Mines cooperated to evaluate the applicability of utilizing predriven recovery rooms to improve longwall equipment recovery. A predriven recovery room is an entry driven parallel to the longwall face at the end of the panel, having standard dimensions (for that particular mine) and supported with bolts, wire mesh, and supplemental support. The preparation of this entry is completed before it experiences mining-induced effects from the approaching longwall face. This enables the face to continue to mine at its normal rate of advance until the panel is completed. The supplemental support is required to control the loads imposed by the front abutment and is the most vital component of the recovery room.

Rate of gas diffusion in reservoir oil has been investigated in an effort to explain the variation in oil characteristics observed in the Weber Sandstone reservoir, Rangely field, Colorado. Coefficients of gas diffusion were determined experimentally for the Rangely oil system and used in a mathematical simulation of gas diffusion during the probable life of the Rangely reservoir, estimated at 65 million years. The simulator involved solution of Fick's law for diffusion in two dimensions by the method of finite difference and successive over-relaxation. The results show that continuing gas diffusion is a logical explanation for the variation in oil characteristics at Rangely and that the pattern of gas distribution by diffusion in an asymmetrical reservoir will not conform to structural contours as originally proposed.

"Welfare endeavor in connection with both the metal and the coal mines of Utah has shown gratifying progress during recent years, and in most mining towns of the state, both the operators and their employees deserve much credit for the efforts put forth to better the living, working, educational and recreational conditions. Progress has been and is being made, but there are still a few important towns where purer water and better sewage disposal are pressing needs.In the older metal-mining towns that are incorporated and are independent of the mining properties operating in the vicinity, less opportunity is presented for the companies to exercise efforts looking toward improved welfare conditions than in company towns controlled by the mine operators.However, even in such towns the companies can do much to better welfare conditions, as shown by the progress in Bingham Canyon during the past several years. The Utah Copper Company has spent $800,000 since 1920, in the erection of modern brick cottages, apartment houses and the Germnell Memorial Club. The cottages and apartment houses have every convenience to be found in up-to-date city homes. The Gemmell Memorial Club erected and equipped at a cost of $175,000 was provided by the company for the benefit of the Utah Copper employees living in the canyon and has been made the recreational center for the camp. Another improvement is the $100,000 fireproof hotel built by the United States Mine of the United States Mining, Smelting and Refining; Co. in the Copperfield section of Bingham Canyon. This hotel will accommodate 105 men exclusive of hotel help and has all the conveniences of a city hotel."

Provide a coalbed methane data source for industry use in mine planning. Approach Coalbed methane data have keen collected and formatted into a computer implemented data base with software developed for storage, retrieval, and generating files of selected data in response to information requests and for statistical analysis of relationships among various coal parameters. How It Works Coalbed methane data is obtained by the Bureau's direct method test on exploration coal cores. The test involves sealing fresh coal cores in desorption canisters and periodically bleeding the gas into a water-filled, graduated cylinder to measure the volume of gas released. Coalbed methane data collected over the past 9 years have been entered into a computer-implemented data base for efficient retrieval and statistical analysis. Data base processing is accomplished with a commercially available storage, sorting, retrieval, and report writing software package (Datatrieve 11). Information requests from the coal industry are processed with the system, and the data in the desired output format am printed and forwarded to the requestor. For lack of comprehensive information, data for the following minerals are excluded: Andalusite, aplite, asphalt, boron, bromine, calcite (optical), calcium chloride (natural), carbon dioxide, clay, columbium (niobium), diatomite (kieselguhr), dumortierite, emery, garnet (abrasive), gem stones (other than diamonds), germanium, greensand, grindstones, helium, indium, iodine, kyanite, lithium, magnesium compounds (other than magnesite), meerschaum, mineral pigments, monazite, natural gas, natural gasoline, oil shale, olivine, perlite, pumice, quartz crystal, radium, sand and gravel, selenium, sillimanite, sodium salts (other than common salt), stone, strontium, sulfur (byproduct), tantalum, tellurium, thallium, topaz (industrial), tripoli) uranium, vermiculite, wollastonite, and zirconium. In addition, a few minor geographic areas for which no statistics are available, are also omitted from the tabulation; it is believed that no significant quantities of minerals are mined in any of these areas.
