Ecuador had limited mineral output, al-though the Government attempted to stimulate metallic mineral exploration and also evaluated a gypsum and a phosphate deposit. A pilot plant to exploit gold deposits was established, and there was extensive gold exploration activity in southern Ecuador. Domestic output of iron and steel declined sharply. Among all minerals, petroleum output was the dominant factor with both exports and production increasing significantly over that of 1988. Crude oil exports contributed 63% of total export earnings and about 70% of the central Government's revenue.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in the work of obtaining data regarding the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils from the various producing fields of the, United" States. Preliminary reports have been published that cover the eastern fields* and the' Rocky Mountain districts.** Since the appearance of these, reports: it has been suggested that certain additional data. I regarding the samples would be of practical value. It was believed that a knowledge of the viscosity of crude oil was desirable, particularly in connection with the design and operation of pipe lines. In accordance with this suggestion, the authors have made viscosity tests upon as many of the samples of the two series as wore still available for examination. Determinations were made at temperatures of 70° and 100°F., and in addition the oils were Subjected to the A. S. T M, pour-test*** to as certain the lowest temperatures at which they remain in a fluid condition.

In an effort to improve the performance of the explosive-anchored rock bolt, the Bureau of Mines studied the effect of the detonation velocity of the explosive and type of charge (linear or nonlinear) on the fracturing tendency of the anchor tube. Also, different types of tubing were compared to determine the one most suitable for use as an anchor tube. The Bruceton up-and-down method was applied in tests in which steel shooting blocks having boreholes ranging from 1-3/8 to 2-1/8 inches in diameter were used. Of the four types of tubing evaluated, a welded A-178 tubing that was drawn over a mandrel and renormalized gave the most promising results. The A-179 seamless tubing that is normally used with the explosive bolt was the most inferior. Both types, however, gave significantly better anchorage than the conventional shell when tested in both laboratory and underground experiments. Within the range of velocities studied (5,000 to 7,000 m/sec), the type of explosive showed no significant effect on anchor-tube performance. In general; linear explosive charges provided better anchorage than nonlinear charges.

Develop a simple and practical technique to measure in situ rock mass properties for realistic design and stability evaluation of underground structures. Background The Bureau of Mines has developed basic principles and techniques to determine in situ rock mass properties including Poisson's ratio, deformation modulus, and yield and failure strengths. An instrumentation package consisting of three pressure cells is installed in a single drill hole. Cell pressure response data are acquired and used to calculate and determine the rock mass properties. How It Works A test hole of BX size (approximately 5.7 cm) or larger is drilled to the approximate depth of the measuring point. The last portion of the test hole is drilled with precision bits to EX size (approximately 3.8 cm). The instrumentation package, which consists of one 3.8-cm-diameter cylindrical pressure cell (CPC) and two 5.7-cm-diameter cement-capsulated, flat borehole pressure cells (BPC's), is then installed. A complete history of cell response to changing strata loads is acquired on a continuous basis with a chart-type hydraulic pressure recorder. From these cell pressure data, Poisson's ratios, deformation moduli, and yield and failure strengths are calculated and determined.

INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at its Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRC) is interested in the application of water mist sprays to extinguish diesel fie1 fires in underground mine diesel refueling areas. To this end experimental studies have been carried out on the extinguishment of diesel fuel fires at PRL's large enclosed fire suppression facility (FSP) at its Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). Two sizes of shallow fuel pans (3x3 ft and 5x7 ft) contained the fires, and a number of commercial mist spray nozzles (at roof locations) and spray/fire locations were tested (52 fires in all). Visual observations of the pool fire extinguishment process by the overhead sprays with an infra-red sensitive videocom suggests that there are two distinct actions involved in extinguishment due to two different transport mechanisms by which the water droplets can enter the fire plume. First, is a direct injection of water droplets into the plume from overhead. This is believed to involve larger water drops and leads to an extinguishment time of several minutes. Second, is an indirect injection process involving small water drops which are entrained in the sideways air flow that feeds oxygen to the fire. This second process apparently leads to relatively fast quenching of the fire in less than 1 minute - a highly useful attribute for a fire protection system. This paper describes a relatively simple parametric model for the indirect water injection process, and defines the critical spray conditions for achieving rapid quenching of the pool fire. While the model is consistent with the pool fire data obtained to date, the PRL studies are continuing with more complex pool fire scenarios. It remains to be seen if this simple parametric approach applies to these future fire tests. THEORETICAL Critical Drop Size In the two-dimensional representation of figure I, an oil pool fire is considered to be a cone whose base is the vaporizing liquid oil surface having an area n?, above which exists a fire plume diffusion flame) of height, L. The rising plume induces a horizontal air flow into the side of the plume supplying the oxygen necessary for propagating gas phase combustion reactions. Water droplets suspended in the air around the plume will tend to follow the horizontal air flows into the plume. This paper is one of a series on milling methods being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. Atlanta is in Elmore County, Idaho, about 80 miles from the railroad at Mountain Home, Idaho. The concentrator is at an elevation of, 6,000 feet and located in a timbered, well-watered region of relatively heavy snowfall. The snow, however, does not seriously affect local operations. The track road to Mountain Home, which passes over a mountain range, is closed each winter from about November 1 to June 15. During this period concentrates are stored and bullion is shipped by airplane. Power is generated by a Diesel engine and by an auxiliary hydroelectric plant. Gold is the principal metal produced; the or also contains an able quantity of silver.

The Bureau of nines, in cooperation with the mining companies of the Southwest, is conducting an investigating to ascertain the safest and most economical explosives to use in metal mines, and to ascertain the best methods of blasting under various conditions. A part of this investigation has been a study of drilling and blasting drift rounds in metal mines. This paper covers one phase of work on drift rounds and discusses the methods of loading the individual holes of the rounds. The blasting tests, on which this paper is based, were made at the Copper queen Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation at Bisbee, Arizona.

The addition of a force gage and a reaction detector to the Bureau of Mines drop-weight impact apparatus made it possible to examine the details of the force exerted on the specimen and make estimates of the time to reaction. With the current setup the force was found to be oscillatory and not reproducble. However, single well-defined pressure pulses can be delivered to the explosive sample by modifying the drop-weight tools. With a modified test arrangement, the time to reaction and the peak force and energy at the time of reaction were determined as a function of drop-weight height for several different explosives. All these parameters were found to decrease as the rate of force application was increased. The same parameters were also found to vary with the thickness of the test sample. The implications of these results are discussed in terms of practical drop-weight testing.

"Introduction Ore from stopes in metal mines is generally dumped or drawn into chutes or raises through which it passes by gravity to the haulage levels. Occasionally, and under some conditions quite frequently, the ore in a chute will wedge or hang and refuse to run. This hanging of the ore may be due to the packing of damp or clayey material, to boulders forming an arch, or to loose lagging or other timber becoming lodged in the chute.In drawing material from a loading chute it is drawn out a car at a time, and the intermittent flow of the material .increases its tendency to hang. When the obstruction in the chute is near or at the loading gate, the chute pullers start the ore by punching it with iron bars inserted through openings in the chute gate. When the obstruction is beyond reach of the bars, other means of starting the ore must be used.In some systems of mining, chutes or ore raises are built with timber as the stope extends upward. Generally, a manway is left alongside of the chutes, and when the ore hangs in a chute usually it can be started by a miner from the manway ladder by pounding on the timbers of the chute or by punching the ore with a bar inserted through small holes in the chute lining. Special methods of starting clogged ore, such as shaking a chain left hanging in the chute, are used at some places.In other systems of mining, ore passes or chutes are run through solid rock and when the ore hangs in one of these passes, either it must be blasted or else started from the top. Sometimes the ore can be started by running water into the top of the chute, but if the water does not start the ore moving, it must be blasted from underneath. This is done by detonating a bundle of cartridges under the obstruction in the chute or raise."

The control of coal dust on coal tipples and cleaning plants has not been given the consideration that is afforded underground dust hazards. This apparent oversight is undoubtedly due to the general opinion that coal-dust accumulation in tipples or cleaning plants does not present the same type of hazard that it does underground. That this opinion is at least in part a fallacy has been proved many times, and the Bureau of Mines has on record many examples of explosions in tipples and cleaning plants.3/ In addition to this explosion hazard, coal dust is considered by sonic authorities to be injurious to the health of individuals exposed to it.4/ Obviously, it reduces visibility and contributes materially to accident hazards and the discomfort of the employees. Several companies have recognized this dust hazard and the advantages derived from controlling it; consequently, they have installed equipment to allay and control the dust on, their cleaning plants and tipples. The object of this paper is to. Summarize briefly some of the methods new in effect.

C. 7 Emergency Rescue Hoists There is a need, especially in mine development areas, for portable, on-call, man-rated equipment capable of lifting men through several hundred feet. Wire rope climbing equipment as shown in Figure 37 appears particularly suited to this need. It is portable, weighing approximately 100 lbs. , is currently man-rated for numerous above ground applications and can be electric or air powered. Commercial units currently have a lifting capacity of 1000 lbs. , and can be fitted with bosun' s chairs. Lifting speeds are in the 20-30 FPM range and the equipment is not depth limited. In a situation where miners are unable to climb to the top of a shaft this equipment could rapidly be anchored to the top of the shaft and lowered to them by hand. Since the self contained unit is controlled by the person travelling in the shaft he would be able to negotiate shaft obstruction himself. This would not be possible with other forms of easily deployed free-hanging equipment. "A gratifying decrease is noticeable in the number of men killed in the coal minas of the United States during the past six months as compared to the quantity of coal produced.During July last year, when 221 men lost their lives, the production of coal was over 50 million tons. In January, 1920, the production had increased to 56 million tons, or 11 per cent, while the fatalities, instead of increasing proportionately, actually decreased to 166, or nearly 15 per cent. Nor is this decrease a mere accident or coincidence peculiar to the month of January, as may be seen from the following table.From the figures shown above it may be observed that the average monthly production for January and the five months immediately preceding, was 49,500,000, or only 2 per cent below that for July, while the average number of men killed was 183, or a decrease of over 17 per cent."

"Inhaled dust particles of appropriate size contact cells of the alveolar region.' The acute response to coal dust appears to involve a variety of cell types, including alveolar epithelial cells, interstitial fibroblasts, both resident and recruited macrophages, and cells of the immune system. Direct and indirect effects of dust, which may be mediated by soluble factors,'' can initiate acute and long-term lung injury. While it appears that epithelial cell growth and differentiation, along with integrity of the epithelial basement membrane, may play a role in the long-term response to dust exposure, little is known of the role the alveolar epithelium may play in the progression of injury. The broad hypothesis that underlies these experiments is that short- and long-term consequences of coal dust exposure involve changes in structure and function of the alveolar epithelium and the underlying extracellular matrix. Recent studies show that coal dusts exert direct effects to modify pulmonary epithelial cell-extracellular matrix interactions in vitro.3EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURESType II cells isolated on day 0 by density centrifugation and differential attachment4 were plated overnight in D MEM containing 10% fetal calf serum before exposure to anthracite dust PSOC 867 sonicated into culture medium (750 ug/mL).3 Synthesis of extracellular matrix proteins was determined on day 3 of primary culture, as detailed elsewhere. 5 Cells were removed from extracellular matrix by extraction with NH4OH and high salt. Extracellular matrix synthesis and fibronectin content were evaluated based on radiolabeling with 3 H-leucine and on Western blot analysis, respectively. Additional analytical methods and calculations are detailed elsewhere.3-5"

This circular has been prepared for the guidance of safety engineers, shot firers, and coal-mine inspectors concerning multiple blasting with short-delay (millisecond-delay) detonators. These special precautions are suggested in addition to those normally followed in blasting, as outlined in the Federal Mine Safety Codes 5 6/ and in Miners' Circular 58.7/ INTRODUCTION The use of short-delay blasting has been proposed for promoting safety and increasing the rate of production in coal mining. Ideally, short-delay blasting, as compared with equivalent single-shot blasting, reduces exposure of the shot firer to dust, fumes, and weakened roof; as compared with equivalent simultaneous blasting, it reduces roof disturbance.

The behaviour of wire ropes used in mine hoisting is not well understood. In an effort to improve this understanding, the structure of round-strand wire ropes was analysed. This report provides a generalised mathematical model that completely describes the geometry of the wires. It consists of two sets of vector equations and is valid for any round-strand wire rope. One set of equations is used to trace the paths of wires that have the form of a single helix. The other is used for the paths of double helical wires. The specific model for a 33-mm 6x1 9 Seale, IWRC, right regular lay wire rope was presented as an example. The paths and the geometric properties of the wires which include the path length per lay of strand, the curvature, and the torsion were determined from this model. In future work, the model could be used to conduct stress analysis for the wires in the deformed rope at a given rope strain and also to study the effect of wear and breaking of wires on strength loss for the various round-strand wire ropes used in mine hoisting.

A 3-inch pilot hole was directionally drilled to intercept the Freeport coalbed horizon horizontally at Mather, Pa., as part of a Bureau of Mines degasification project. The original concept was to continue the horizontal drilling into the coalbed, after the initial intercept, with a total of three horizontal holes eventually being completed. However, the erratic thickness (0.0 to 4.3 feet) of the Freeport coalbed at Mather was not sufficient to sup- port the horizontal drilling degasification technique, and the site was abandoned after six attempts to locate adequate continuous coal thicknesses. The drilling of coreholes in the immediate vicinity of proposed well paths to evaluate coal thickness is essential prior to future slant hole operations. Although mechanical failures of the new directional drilling equipment, mud pump and rig breakdowns, directional control problems, and exploratory horizontal drilling in the Freeport horizon more than doubled the anticipated cost of the pilot hole, continuing improvements in directional drilling equipment and techniques should significantly reduce the time and costs of future drilling operations.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYElectricity is used extensively in open-pit metal mines to provide illumination, heat, and power to operate hauling and loading equipment, drills, pumps, signal systems, and other machinery. Good installation and maintenance of equipment and power, circuits, are essential to minimize the hazards of shock, burns, and fire.In the 13 years from 1931 to 1943, 20 fatal and 82 nonfatal injuries resulted from the use of electricity in open-pit mines in the United States ; 4/ these figures represent about, 10 percent of all fatalities and 1 percent of the nonfatal injuries. The ratio of fatal to nonfatal injuries from electricity in such mines was very high during this period; the figures show one fatality to every five accidents from this cause.Electricity may cause personal injury through abnormalities in equipment, such as short-circuit, accidental ground, overload, and poor contact; however, each year some fatal electrical accidents are due to persons touching uninsulated ""live wires."" These contact injuries are the result of careless body movements of persons in the vicinity of 'wires at places not normally frequented, or of accidental contact with live circuits when handling metal objects. Electrical hazards can be minimized by the enclosure or elevation of current-carrying parts; ample working space around equipment, adequate insulation, locking switches in the open or closed position under certain conditions, identifying and warning devices, protective grounding, insulating flooring, platforms, or rubber gloves, and proper inspection and maintenance."

The Bureau of Mines characterized the chemical and physical properties of metallo-organic materials in petroleum to determine their effect on petroleum production and refining. The structures and physical properties of porphyrins and materials that normally contain metalloporphyrins such as crude oils and asphaltenes were investigated using elemental analysis, NMR analysis, absorption spectrometry, and small-angle X-ray scattering. Petroleum fractions greatly enriched in metalloporphyrins were obtained using asphaltene precipitation, liquid extraction, and large-scale liquid-solid chromatography. Selected fractions containing porphyrins were further purified by chromatographic methods, crystallization, and demetalation followed by chromatography. Nonporphyrin metals could not be appreciably concentrated from the bulk of the asphaltene.
