Goals of the Bureau of Mines include utilizing readily available minerals as substitutes for scarce mineral commodities and minimizing occupational hazards associated with mineral processing occupations. Therefore, the Tuscaloosa Research Center investigated using rapid-set cement as a suitable molding sand binder for small ferrous castings; currently petroleum-based binders are used. Substitution of a rapid-set cement would eliminate organic vapors associated with the petroleum-based binders; these vapors constitute occupational hazards and environmental pollutants. A binder containing 60 percent white portland cement (WPC) and 40 percent calcium aluminate (CA) would be an acceptable and economic substitute for petroleum-based binders where the foundry requirements are compatible with its limitations. It produced a set time and a pattern strip time of less than 1 hour. Cement, sand, and water mixtures developed compressive strengths from about 40 to 75 psi after 2 hours and from 120 to 130 psi after 24 hours. Tensile strengths of 18 to 22 psi were obtained after 2 hours, increasing to 30 to 35 psi after 24 hours. The addition of about 1 percent polyphosphate to the sand-cement-water mixture doubled the compressive strength and increased the tensile strength about 50 percent after 4 hours, but also increased the set time from 30 minutes to 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Po1yvinylacetate (PVA) resin latex additions resulted in rapid strength development. When castings were poured into the cement-bonded molds, the surface finish was fair to good on gray iron castings, but some areas of burn-on were present on steel castings. Using a graphite wash on the cement-bonded molds produced good surfaces on gray iron castings.

The first thing to consider in prevention of electric shock is the voltage of the circuit. No person can be sure that he will not be killed, even from a 110-volt circuit, if he makes proper contact with the circuit so as to cause the maximum current to pass through his body. As the voltage is increased to 250 volts, 500 volts, or 2,300 volts the danger from contact with the electric circuit is increased, Alternating current of the same nominal voltage is possibly more dangerous than direct current. Experience has taught us that both will cause death, and that if the fatalities from this source are to be kept low, certain precautions in the guarding of circuits must be observed.

The Bureau of Mines is in the process of degasifying a virgin area in northern West Virginia from the base of an 839-foot -deep vertical borehole. An in situ gas pressure hole 199 feet long, and seven degasification holes ranging in depth from 500 to 850 feet (average 618 feet) were drilled in an 8-foot-thick virgin Pittsburgh coalbed from the enlarged (14-foot-diameter) bottom of this borehole. The in situ pressure at the back end of the hole and the range of gas and water flows from degasification holes as they were completed and closed off were 203 psi, 79,000 to 257,000 cfd (average 160,000 cfd), and 5 to 8 gpm per hole (average 6.8 gpm), respectively. Twenty-four hours after the seven holes were connected through individual water traps to a common collector for natural venting of the gas through pipes to the atmosphere, the total gas and water flows and the in situ pressure dropped, respectively, to 971,000 cfd, 1.3 gpm, and 18 psi. Eighty days later the corresponding values dropped to 529,000 cfd, 0.50 gpm, and 13 psi. After 180 days of degasification, 91 million cubic feet of gas had been removed from the affected virgin area. This represents 60 to 70 percent of the gas calculated to be contained in the area of coal affected by the holes.

The added hazards to mining incident to oil and gas wells penetrating the coal measures in proximity to mine workings , have long been recognized in those fields where the extraction of oil , gas , and coal , has been in progress for a number of years . The history of these fields is replete with stories of serious mine fires , explosions , and miraculous escapes from both fires and explosions due to either oil or gas finding its way into the mine workings through the strata , or by mining into an unknown or uncharted and abandoned oil or gas well that had not been properly plugged . The Director of the Bureau of Mines , in response to numerous requests from coal operators and oil and gas operators , called a meeting in 1913 to discuss necessary precationary measures to take when drilling oil or gas wells through workable coal beds and to try , if possible . to formulate a set of regulations that might serve as a guide to those persons preparing regulations covering the drilling of oil and gas wells in the various coal producing States . This meeting was attended by representatives of the coal , oil , and gas industries , State geologists , State mine inspectors , and representatives of the Bureau of Mines . A committee was appointed to prepare a set of regulations , which was later published as U.S.Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 53 ; the discussions and results of the meeting werepublished as U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 65 . Later , the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers appointed a committee to draft a model law for the use of the legislature of any State concerned . This committee made its report on April 27 , 1928 . Several of the coal mining States now have more or less comprehensive regulations governing the drilling of oil or gas wells through workable coal beds , others have regulations that are inadequate , while some have no regulations . The State of West Virginia recently enacted a law containing reg lations which are the result of a comprehensive and careful study of the problem .

[The Bureau of Mines conducted bench-scale studies to develop techniques for stripping tetravalent cerium from tri-n-butyl phosphate solutions. Experiments were conducted in a constant-temperature bath using beakers and mechanical stirring. Ninety-five pct of the cerium was stripped from a 50-pct tri-n-butyl phosphate 50-pct kerosene solution containing 0.18 M cerium in 15 minutes at 50° C using 0.11 M aqueous formaldehyde.]

"Brattice cloth is an important material in coal-mine ventilation practically all coal mines use some brattice cloth, gassy mines a large amount. It is employed in three ways:Crosscut brattices.Curtains in haulageways.Line brattices in gassy mines.In each case brattice cloth is used to deflect part or all of a split of the mine ventilating current into or toward the face of a working place. As a general rule, its use in a particular location is temporary.A crosscut brattice should be employed only until a permanent stopping has been erected. Such a brattice is subject to little wear when in actual service, the chief damage occurring when it is taken down and put up again.When used for curtains on haulageways or haulage crosscuts to deflect the air current up into rooms or headings, the wear on brattice cloth is considerable, as mine cars, machines, and personnel constantly pass under the curtains which last only a few days or a few weeks in an active part of the mine. For such purposes tightly woven smooth cloth is desirable, so that it will not be easily torn. Curtains should not be used back from the working places, as they sometimes are, to deflect the main. split, as the leakage of air is too great. Doors should be used in such places."

Stone mines represent the highest percentage of operating underground nonmetal mines in the United States. With the introduction of stricter Diesel Particular Matter (DPM) regulations, large-opening underground room-and-pillar stone mine operators are faced with implementing one or more alternative methods to reduce concentration levels including: install and maintain an effective ventilation system; install lower DPM emission diesel engines; the adding of DPM filters. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is actively researching various aspects of fan and stopping designs in an effort to improve the ventilation of these mines. NIOSH has identified and further developed three alternative ventilation methods for use in large-opening underground mines: split-mine, perimeter, and unit-ventilation. This paper describes the implementation of the three methods with respect to their use in mines of various levels of development.

Completion of 18 churn-drill holes totaling 2,218 feet and 3 diamond-drill holes aggregating 421.5 feet of drilling in the M.C. mine area, near Truman, Wis., provided information indicating the existence and trend of a zone of zinc mineralization extending for 1,000 feet west of the old M. C. shaft.

In the 39 years from 1891 to 1929 , gas and dust explosions in the coal mines of Tennessee caused 413 deaths , or one- third of the fatalities in the mines for that period . Inasmuch as explosions caused but about 15 per cent of mine fatalities for the whole United States for this same period it is evident that the Tennessee coal mining record is by no means good , as far as explosion fatalities are concerned . Since 1926 , Tennessee has had a clear record as to fatalities from explosions ; this fact may be credited very largely to the improved conditions and safer practices in Tennessee's coal mines which have been brought about by the work of the State Inspection Department and of the Southern Appalachian Coal Operators Association directed toward adoption of safety precautions and practices most of which are advocated by the United States Bureau of Mines . Chief among these improvements are the replacement of black powder and dynamite by permissible explosives , improved ventilation , and the installation of rigid methods of inspection for gas . With the present tendency for operations to pass into the hands of responsible and informed management , and with unrelaxed care and inspection , the good record of the past several years should be maintained .

Although local conditions at each mining property affect the percentage of increase in drilling speed for a given reduction in gage of bit, the results of drilling tests conducted at the Mount Weather testing adit show such a large advantage in favor of the smaller gages that they should be indicative of the possibilities at most mines. GENERAL DISCUSSION Although it is common knowledge among miners that drilling speed ill- creases with reduction in gage of bit, the large amount o this increase is not so universally realized, A recent Bureau of Mines4/ survey of drilling practices in 28 metal mines showed that the maximum gage of starters is 3 inches and that at 50 percent of the mines starters are 2-1/4 inches or larger, Because this size appears too large for conditions at most' mines where abrasion is moderate and where powder distribution permits, the use of smaller bits presents a favorable opportunity for reducing drilling costs.

The Wood mine area was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in -1941 by a magnetic survey and a gravitational survey. Surface trenches were excavated, and diamond-drill holes were bored at the strongest anomalies developed in common by the two surveys. In the last century', several widely separated bodies of chromite with some magnetite had been exploited in a 'serpentine belt near its contact with schist. At one time this district held a virtual monopoly on the production of chromite. Known ore bodies now are exhausted. Owing to the relatively high specific gravity of chromate compared to normal rocks, a gravitational survey was run to determine which magnetic anomalies were worthy of diamond drilling. Linear feet of trenching totaled 1,710 feet. Ten holes were diamond drilled, which totaled 2,272 feet. The log of the drilling is shown in the text in a tabulation of drill-hole data.

This paper presents the results of a study to verify and validate a computer model that represents and analyzes motions and hazardous events in a simulated three dimensional workplace. The purpose of the computer model is to support research that is investigating the safe speed range for the vertical movement of roof bolter boom arms to reduce worker injuries in underground coal mines. The information obtained for this paper is based upon a project that is investigating means to reduce workers risks of injury from exposure to mining machinery. The methodology being employed by the project includes human factors design considerations, anthropometric modeling and simulation tools, laboratory validation, engineering interventions, and collaboration with industry and an equipment manufacturer. The results of this study were used to (1) determine the input parameters that are unique to the mining environment and needed to develop a credible, computer-based, human-machine interactive model, (2) develop test methods to measure the required parameters, and (3) to refine the human-machine interactive computer model.

In a closely controlled laboratory retorting system for oil shale, a relationship was developed by the Bureau of Mines between the temperature in the retort and the weight ratio of ethylene to ethane in the gases produced. Reciprocal temperature was shown to be directly proportional to the log ([ethylene]/[ethane]). From this relationship a number, called retorting index, was developed. The retorting index has the dimension of temperature, but its magnitude depends on both temperature and residence time for the reactants in the heated zone in the oil-shale retort. The slopes of the lines relating reciprocal temperature and the logarithm of the ethylene-ethane ratios are nearly constant for each of the retorting processes for which data have been presented. The retorting index should be a valuable tool to control the operation of oil-shale retorts, either aboveground or in situ. If an optimum operating condition can be established, the maintenance of the optimum or the departure from it should be easily monitored by use of the index.

This report describes a project in which Development of a Supervisory and Management Training Program for the Underground Coal Mining Industry was developed and evaluated. The project was carried out in two phases. The first phase was a research effort to develop specifications for the program. The second phase was a development and evaluation effort. In the second phase, training programs for first-line supervisors (section foremen) and for middle managers (mine/shift foremen and mine superintendents) were prepared in accordance with the specifications and evaluated by members of the industry. This report describes the project and presents the conclusions drawn there from.

This report (Independent Functional Safety Assessment Guidance 7.0) is the last in a nine-part series of recommendations and guidance addressing the functional safety of processor-controlled mining equipment. It is part of a risk-based system safety process encompassing hardware, software, humans, and the operating environment for the equipment’s life cycle. Figure1 shows a safety framework containing these recommendations. The reports in this series address the various life cycle stages of inception, design, approval and certification, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. These recommendations were developed as a joint project between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. They are intended for use by mining companies, original equipment manufacturers, and after-market suppliers to these mining companies. Users of these reports are expected to consider the set in total during the design cycle. • 1.0 Safety Introduction (Part 1).—This is an introductory report for the general mining industry. It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics (PE), and includes the benefits of implementing a system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety (Part 2) and 2.2 Software Safety (Part 3).—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 61508 [IEC 1998a,b,c,d,e,f,g]and other standards. The scope is “surface and underground safety-related mining systems employing embedded, networked, and nonnetworked programmable electronics.” System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system’s safety. • 3.0 Safety File (Part 4).—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a “proof of safety” that the system and its operation meet the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full life cycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. • 4.0 Safety Assessment (Part 5).—The independent assessment of the safety file is addressed. It establishes consistent methods to determine the completeness and suitability of safety evidence and justifications. This assessment could be conducted by an independent third party. • Safety Framework Guidance.—It is intended to supplement the safety framework reports with guidance providing users with additional information. The purpose is to assist users in applying the concepts presented. In other words, the safety framework is what needs to be done and the guidance is how it can be done. The guidance information reinforces the concepts, describes various methodologies that can be used, and gives examples and references. It also gives information on the benefits and drawbacks of various methodologies. The guidance reports are not intended to promote a single methodology or to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject material. They provide information and references so that the user can more intelligently choose and implement the appropriate methodologies given the user’s application and capabilities. This is the second of a series of publications that describes the progress of mechanical longwall coal mining in the United States in which a German coal planer was employed.3/ Details of the equipment, a description of its operation, and the results obtained in mining the experimental panel were published in the preceding report. Experimental mining with the planer in the first panel showed an improvement in performance over conventional mining methods at the coal company&apos;s Stotesbury 11 mine. The work, which was begun on an experimental basis, soon proved successful, and the coal company purchased the equipment for continued use. Two panels, adjacent to the first, were developed and mined with the planer. Each of these panels was shorter than the preceding one because water seepage from a surface creek limited development. On completion of mining in the third panel, the planer equipment was moved by the cooperating company to a nearby mine operated in the same coal bed where a large area of coal suitable for planer mining is available.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine whether it is possible to substantially improve the fatigue resistance of lead sheet by means of surface coatings. Five types of coatings were applied to unalloyed chemical lead sheet. Flexural tests revealed that the best fatigue resistance was obtained with coatings of vacuum grease. Vacuum-grease coatings on unalloyed lead sheet resulted in fatigue resistance at least as good as that of the fatigue-resistant alloy Pb-0.04 Ca. Coated lead sheet was also tested in short-time tensile tests and in tensile creep tests. Tensile and yield strengths were increased by several of the coatings with only moderate loss of ductility. Creep resistance was also improved in varying degrees by most of the coatings. The Bureau also conducted research on the effectiveness of noise barriers by using sheet lead in combination with other materials. Noise barriers consisting of continuous-cast sheet lead with gypsum board were found to be effective and relatively inexpensive barriers.

Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effectiveness of various types of crushers for use with the Bureau-developed pneumatic concentration technique for mica. Three types of crushers were investigated in this study, a roll crusher, a jaw crusher, and a hammer mill. All the mica concentrates produced contained over 82 percent mica, but recoveries varied considerably. The roll crusher gave the lowest recovery of 46 percent of the mica followed by the jaw crusher with a recovery of 50 percent of the mica. The hammer mill proved the most effective, producing four concentrates with recoveries of at least 70 percent.
