Commercial uranium metal was electrore fined to a high- purity product using molten- salt electrolytes in an inert atmosphere cell . Electrorefined uranium that contained , after consolidation , less than 30 ppm of metallic impurities was prepared . A method of leaching the electrolyte crystals to remove the salts was developed . Cathode current efficiencies from 90 to 100 percent were obtained . Two molten- salt electrolytes were prepared and evaluated : (1 ) lithium chloride - potassium chloride - uranium trichloride and ( 2 ) sodium chloridepotassium chloride - uranium trichloride . Very little difference was found in the purity of the uranium metal produced in either system . The lithium chloride - potassium chloride - uranium tri - chloride electrolyte was preferable from an operational standpoint .

In making any canvass of secondary metals great care must be exercised to avoid duplication or exaggeration of net consumption. One of the major difficulties is to trace the metal accurately as it passes through the many cycles of manufacture. Greater or less duplication probably occurs in any canvass. The manufacturer of tin plate, for instance, purchases primary pig tin exclusively as a raw material. Most of it goes into the coating on the steel sheet, but a substantial part emerges in the form of byproducts such as scruffs and drosses. These are sold to other plants, where they are used in the manufacture of alloys and chemicals. Alloys and chemicals, however, are not necessarily articles for final consumption. The alloy may be sold in ingot form to a bearing manufacturer, who, in turn may produce some scrap, which he may sell to still' another plant that may make still other products. There is a considerable return of tin in the form of waste products from chemicals sold to the silk industry. Even tin plate does not represent an ultimate use of tin because the tin-can maker produces large amounts of clippings, which are sold to detinning plants, where the tin is recovered and used again for some other purpose. Thus the degree of duplication in consumption statistics depends on the point in the industrial cycle where consumption is measured.

"Those having an intimate knowledge of the relation between production and consumption of crude oil in the United States have realized for some time that production will not be able to keep pace with consumption. The American public has had this called forcibly to its attention by the increased prices of gasoline and crude oil, and by the recent shortage of gasoline on the Pacific Coast. In substance, each year we are consuming millions of barrels of oil more than we produce, and this deficit must be made to by importations. A careful analysis of the situation makes it evident that we need every barrel of oil that can be produced.Need for the Petroleum Production Engineer.Under present production practices perhaps 80% of the oil still remains in the sand. (See Lewis, J.O., Methods for increasing the recovery from oil sands, U. S. Bureau of Mines, Bulletin 148 p. 8.) Many wells are making water, and even whole pools are being flooded. The burning of fuels under field boilers is not generally efficient, and often gas is not made to do its full duty in bringing the oil to the well.In the past the producer has had to combat these and other problems single-handed. He has been too busy to give them special attention, and he has had little competent engineering advice. Oil, gas, and water occur underground according to certain natural laws. Undoubtedly an engineer, who is familiar with production practices and understands the fundamentals of the accumulation of oil and gas, can be of service to the producer by specializing on certain problems with a view of getting mare oil from the sand. In every other enterprise of similar magnitude the engineer is regarded as a necessary unit to its operation, and he should be so in the production of oil. His field of work should extend to every phase of production in which science and engineering and geology"

1. In 2001, a total of 7,131 sand and gravel mining operations reported employment statistics to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Sand and gravel mines comprised 48.8% of all mining operations, the largest percentage of all mining sectors. Sand and gravel mines are distributed throughout all 50 states. The median number of operator employees per sand and gravel mine was 3.0.

Recent employment figures (taken from the Mine Safety and Health Administration&apos;s database) indicate that the number of independent contractor&apos; employees working in the coal mining industry has doubled over the past ten years. As their numbers increase, they become a more visible segment of the industry. [ ] Increased exposure to mining hazards has also brought an increase in the number of fatalities involving independent contractor workers. One gauge that is traditionally used to evaluate the overall safety of an entity is the "number of fatalities." Over the five-year period from 1985-89, 27 independent contractor employees were fatally injured while working on coal mine property. This number increased to 45 fatalities during the subsequent five-year period from 1990-94. Nearly half of these fatalities (47%) were due to accidents involving powered haulage (See Table); 13% were electrical accidents; and 9% were machinery accidents. Combined, these three accident classifications accounted for 69% of all coal nine independent contractor fatalities. Information taken from fatality data is an important piece of the safety puzzle; however, other variables need to he examined in order to better define contributing factors associated with accidents. More specifically, information on trends in fatal and nonfatal accident and injury data is necessary before deciding what approach should be used to improve safety. In order to implement appropriate safety strategies, it is important for safety practitioners to examine all available lost time accident and injury information. The following coal industry data sites specific and present trends of independent contractor employees working in underground locations at coal mines, surface areas of underground coal mines, surface coal mines, and preparation plants. The data compares employment and accidents for time periods at the beginning and the end of a ten-year span from 1985 to 1994. Because the number of incidents involving independent contractors in certain accident categories during any one year may be small, three-year totals are used; the first three years (1985-87) of the ten-year period are compared with the last three years (1992-94). The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the safe operating conditions for using recycled (used) lubricating oil from mining equipment as a partial replacement for diesel fuel to make ANFO-type blasting agents. The use of recycled oil (RO) saves energy, reduces oil imports, and reduces mining costs. Low ambient temperatures may cause these recycled oils to become too viscous for proper absorption by ammonium nitrate (AN) prills and result in poor blast performance, safety hazards, and environmental problems. To help quantify and resolve these issues, viscosity, mixing, and performance tests were conducted at various temperatures. Diesel fuels No. 1 and No. 2 were studied separately and in blends with 25,50, and 75% RO. Good quality ANFO mixes (94-6) were produced with dry absorbent prills and blended fuel (No. 1 diesel plus RO) at temperatures as low as -40° F (-40°C) with 75% No. 1125% RO, and at -20°F (-29°C) with 50/50. Diesel fuel No. 2 also made good mixes as low as -30" F (-34" C) with 75% No. 2/25% RO, and at 0° F(-18° C)with 50/50. Reference detonation velocity tests were conducted in 1.4" (3.6 cm) diameter steel pipe at 70°F (21°C) on No. 1 diesel ANFO (94-6), giving an average value of 9722 ft/s (2964 m/s). Comparison tests showed good ANFO performance at low temperatures. Blended fuel ANFO (75% No. 1/25% RO) mixed, loaded, and tested at -40°F (-40°C), produced an average velocity of 9247 Ws (281 8 m/s). A 50/50 blend gave a velocity of 8083 Ws (2464 ds) at -20°F (-29°C). Based on these results, a practical field method has been developed to help evaluate whether a specific oil blend will mix properly with AN at a low ambient temperature. This method will help to promote the safe and reliable use of RO ANFO at low temperatures, with adequate performance.

The Bureau of Mines conducted ignition, flammability, and decomposition experiments on gas mixtures containing ethylene to determine its flammability characteristics at elevated pressures and ambient temperatures. Pure ethylene was found to propagate a decomposition reaction at 1,000 psig and ambient temperatures when ignited with 1 gram or more of guncotton in a 2-inch-id bomb. The decomposition products were primarily carbon, methane, and hydrogen.

Publication of lists of the devices for giving respiratory protection which have been approved by the U. S. Bureau of Mines is made periodically for the purpose of aiding consumers in procuring equipment .374/ The last published list , approved to March 15 , 1935 , appeared as Information Circular 6845 with the same title as this article . The schedules of requirements and tests which the devices must meet in order to obtain approval are published 2/6/1/8/ by the Bureau of tests the devices must Mines and are available to the public . It is pertinent to mention that the preparation of a schedule of requirements for fresh-air supply devices of the types commonly known as positive -pressure respirators , airline respirators , sand- blast helmets , and hoods , has been practically completed and will soon be ready for release to the public .

"This report is () expansive test program by the Bureau of Mines to determine methods from various and ferrous manganese-grade product () widespread () and manfniferrous iron ores. Among the samples received for testing was one from the pits of the Barytes Mining Co., 1-1/ 2 miles northeast of Cartersville, Ga.. The property is approximately in the center of the Cartersville manganese district and shares a common corner with properties of the New Riverside Ochre Co. and the Etowah Development Co., both producers of manganifereus ores. The deposit is typical of the district and occurs in residual clays resulting from weathering of the Shady limestone and Weisner quartzite. 7/The property is developed by a number of open pits ranging to 60 feet in depth. In 1918 several carloads of manganiferous iron ore was mined from an alit on the property. Since then mining operations have been negligible. The ore is known locally as calico ore.A 4-ton sample representing -re as it occurs in the -pen pits vas furnished for testing. The sample consisted of a mixture of red iron oxides, wad, and clay, with small pebbles of manganese oxides and siliceous fragments scattered throughout."

Low-temperature heat capacities of chiolite (Na5Al3F14) were determined by adiabatic calorimetry in the temperature range 5.8 to 300 K. The derived standard entropy (S°, 298.15) was 115.6 ± 0.2 cal/deg-mole. High temperature enthalpies relative to 298.15 K were obtained by precision drop calorimetry up to 1,000 K. Tables of experimental data and related thermodynamic functions are given for the temperature range of experimental observations.

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of the investigation discussed in this article was to evaluate the toxic hazard from gases produced when thermosetting plastic materials used for electrical insulating purposes are burned or thermally decomposed in enclosed spaces. For brevity the term ""toxicity"" is used throughout the article to refer to the nature of gases produced under these conditions. A need for immediate study of the problem was created as a re¬sult of the battle damage reports received from various United States Fleet units. These indicated that the fumes emitted when these materials were burned or thermally decomposed had, in several instances, resulted in toxic atmospheres. In attempting to develop a suitable test method for evaluating toxicity, it was recognized that no single test procedure could be expected to duplicate the variety of conditions that might exist in an actual fire aboard ship. In view of the immediate need, however, it was felt that considerable information could be obtained, at least to classify comparatively the several types of materials as to the toxic effect caused by burning or thermal decomposition, through the development of a sound empirical method which could be applied to all of the materials. On this basis, it was decided to modify the Navy flame resistance test for thermosetting plastics to render it applicable to the determination of the toxic, gases evolved when this test was employed. A wide variety of materials was tested, both molded and laminated, to cover the types commonly used by the Navy in electrical applications. Toxicity determinations were conducted at the Bureau of Mines Central Experiment Station, Pittsburgh, Pa. Parallel tests, to determine the flame resistance of the materials, were conducted at the Material Laboratory, U. S. Navy Yard, New York, N. Y."

MULSIM/NL (multiple seams, nonlinear) is a new U.S. Bureau of Mines boundary-element-method (BEM) program for calculating stresses and displacements (is., convergence) in coal mines or thin, tabular rnetalliferous veins. This manual gives detailed operating instructions for MULSIM/NL and illustrates its use with several practical examples. While this manual concentrates on the practical aspects of actually running and using MULSIM/NL, another companion report titled "MULSIM/NL- Theoretical and Programmer&apos;s Manual" provides mathematical and programming details to those engineers and programmers who need to fully understand the FORTRAN program or desire to alter and enhance it. MULSIMINL analyzes one to four parallel seams that have any orientation with respect to the Earth&apos;s surface. Three main features distinguish MULSIM/NL from its predecessors: (1) nonlinear material models, (2) multiple mining steps, and (3) comprehensive energy release and strain energy computations. MULSIM/NL has six material models for the in-seam material including (1) linear elastic for coal, (2) strain softening, (3) elastic plastic, (4) bilinear hardening, (5) strain hardening, and (6) linear elastic for gob. The multiple mining step capability enables the user to simulate a changing mine geometry. Finally, MULSIM/NL performs comprehensive energy release rate calculations.

The law now in effect (January 30, 1931) in the Netherlands with respect to the prospecting for and the developing of minerals is regulated by , or based upon , the French Act of April 21 , 1810 , "Concernant les mines , les minières et les carrières ( Bulletin des Lois No. 285) . " A second edition of a compilation ( by Drs . Ccuvee and Ritter ) of the mining legislation of Holland , including this act with other legal requirements , was published in 1928 under the title of "De Nederlandsche Mijnwetgeving , " by H. T. Tjeenk Willink & Zoon , Haarlem. In this abstract reference is made to the Act of 1810 , the Royal Decree of September 18, 1818 , the Mining Act of 1903 , and the Act of June 20 , 1924 .

The investigation reported in this paper is one of several included in a broad program of developing new or improved concentration processes for the oxidized and partly oxidized deposits of lead and zinc, A sample from the Playter lease, Newton County, Mo., containing pyromorphite was successfully concentrated by fatty acid flotation to a grade of over 62 percent lead. Owing to the presence of a high content of slime-size values, the overall recovery of lead at that grade was limited to 44 percent. DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY OF PROPERTY The mineral pyromorphite is a chlorophosphate of lead containing 76.4 percent lead, and, although it occurs frequently in association with other lead minerals, it is considered a minor ore mineral of lead. The manner of occurrence of oxidized lead minerals, including pyromorphite, which frequently are no larger in grain size than the clay with which they are found, militates both against development of a simple beneficiation process and high recovery. The profitable exploitation of such deposits depends not only on a successful treatment procedure but a highly favorable metal market as well. For these, and perhaps other reasons, very little research has been done on the recovery of pyromorphite from its deposits.

D. 1 Most Effective Salts A. Ammonium Phosphates Monammomium phosphate and diammonium phosphate (salts of ortho phosphoric acid) are superior to the triammonium salt in fire-resisting properties. Of these two, the monammomium salt is chemically the more stable. It is also held very retentively by a number of woods, thus reducing leaching out of the salt if exposed to water. Saturated aqueous solutions of mon- or di-ammonium phosphates have vapor preservatives corresponding to an atmospheric relative humidity of 9Z to 93 percent, the wood, will, therefore, not attract any moisture at humidities below this figure. Low concentrations (1 lb dry fire-retardant per cubic foot of the dry, treated timber) will stop flame and high concentration (5 lbs. per cubic foot) will prevent smoldering. B. Ammonium Sulphate In low concentrations ammonium sulphate has only a small effect on flame propagation, but its effect is marked when concentrations of the order of 20 percent are employed. It has no appreciable effect on smoldering. It is more corrosive to metals than are the phosphates, but is less corrosive than ammonium chloride or magnesium chloride. It is possible to leach it out of wood by prolonged and continuous action of water The vapor pressure of the saturated solution corresponds to 81 percent atmospheric humidity.

This paper describes a gas-transport method for measuring vapor pressures of liquid metals. Vapor pressures of iron and nickel were determined at temperatures between 1,540° and 1,620° C. The results can be represented by the following equations: log Pmm (iron) -19,460/T + 9.147, log Pmm (nickel) -2l,030/T + 9.689. The study was undertaken as part of a program to determine thermodynamic activities in liquid iron alloys.

"The method of analyzing light oil for benzene is fully described by Fieldner and others 4/ and Kester and Kolmes 5/. In this procedure, benzene is determined by shaking 20 cc. of the 79º to 81º C. boiling point cut from the fractionation of the refined light oil with 3 volumes of 98—percent sulfuric acid in an A. S. T. M. separator funnel of the type used for determining water in bitumi¬nous materials. After the mixture has been shaken 5 minutes it is allowed to settle at least half an hour and the acid is drawn off; the residual oil is reported as paraffins and the decrease in volume as benzene. The method has been found satisfactory for light oils from coals carbonized at 5000, 600°, and 7000 C. but does not give accurate, reproducible results for oils from the 800° C. tests.The content of benzene of the 790 to 81° C. cut is high, 90 to 95 percent, for 800° C. light oils, whereas for lower—temperature light oils it is considerably less. Benzene is the most difficult of the aromatics to sulfonate, hence the acid concentration must be maintained above 95 percent to insure complete sulfonation. Sulfuric acid (98 percent) reacts with benzene, but its reaction with paraffins at ordinary temperatures is negligible; however, more concentrated acid will attack paraffins and give erroneous yields of benzene. The reaction between benzene and sulfuric acid forms water that will dilute the acid. The effect of this dilution may be overcome by increasing the acid-to-oil ratio or increasing the strength of the acid. The latter, however, must not be used, because the stronger acid reacts with paraffins."
