In 1984, personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the 9,550-acre Yatahoney Creek Wilderness Study Area (WSA) for mineral resources. This study area, in southwestern Idaho, is underlain by tuffs and basalt of Tertiary age. Owyhee County mining records and U.S. Bureau of Land Management records, and other references were examined prior to the field study. There are no known mines, claims, or prospects in or near the WSA. No evidence of mineral deposits or occurrences was observed. Oil and gas leases or lease applications are in the southern portion and northeast corner of the WSA. Although placer gold exists in the Owyhee River drainage, there are insufficient deposits of gold-bearing gravel in the Yatahoney Creek WSA to enable mining. INTRODUCTION The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) conduct mineral surveys of designated wilderness study areas (WSAs) 1/ to ensure mineral values that may be present are considered in wilderness recommendations. The USBM examines known mines, prospects, and mineralized sites, and the USGS performs geologic mapping, and geochemical and geophysical surveys on an areal basis.

Methane concentration peaks were measured by the Bureau of Mines at coal mine working faces during entry development. The statistical distribution of peaks was found to be normal or log normal depending on how well the methane was being mixed into the ventilation airstream. A normal distribution indicated good mixing, whereas a log-normal distribution indicated that mixing was poor. In addition, the "highest" peaks over selected intervals were found to fit a type I extreme-value distribution, a result similar to that obtained while mining longwall faces.

Lower the respirable dust expo-sure of longwall mine workers by reducing the amount of air-borne respirable dust generated during coal extraction. Approach Increase the moisture content of the coal seam through water infusion before the coal is mined. How Water Infusion Works Increasing the moisture content in coal tends to prevent respirable dust from becoming air-borne during mining and transport. The moisture content of the coal seam can be increased by infusing water into the seam. Water under pressure is forced into the cracks (cleats) of the coal seam through sealed bore-holes. The effectiveness of water infusion is a function of the amount of water the coal seam accepts (its infusibility), which depends on the cleat density (cleat spacing) and cleat size (crack diameter). Thus the effect of water infusion on dust control depends mainly on coal seam characteristics. Water infusion techniques are generally used to restrict the flow of methane gas to the working face; however, the technique provides an alternative dust control method in mines with severe dust problems which limit production.

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1952 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 94 samples of aviation gasoline which include, for the first time in this series of reports, data on five samples of grade 108/135 aviation fuel. Data also are given for 34 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers? production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 16 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

A study was made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the influence of high energy-rate deformation on the structures and properties of low-carbon steel, stainless steel, titanium, titanium-6 percent aluminum-4 percent vanadium, beryllium, molybdenum, and tungsten. The purpose of this study was to determine relative formability, the effect of energy and temperature on metalworking parameters and resulting structures, and the properties of materials formed by this technique. Forming techniques were limited to upset forging and direct extrusion on pneumatic-mechanical forming machines. Results show that considerable grain refinement can be achieved by careful control of deformation and forming temperature by high energy-rate techniques. Significant improvements in strength were observed as a result of this refined structure. Approximate deformation resistance as a function of temperature was determined for a variety of materials.

For the past three or four years attention has been attracted to the deposits of lead vanadate in the Goodsprings , Nevada , district . Some ore running as high as 9 per cent 205 has been produced , but most of it runs from 0.5 to 3 per cent . Only a little ore , and that of the richer sort , has been shipped , since the low- grade ore will not stend the cost of shipment and no concentration mill has been available . Preliminary experiments indicate that chemical treatment of the low- grade ore without concentration is not feasible . Its treatment therefore involves two distinct problems ; first , mechanical concentration ; and second , a smelting or chemical treatment to obtain the lead and vanadium in marketable form . Upon this basis the work has been conducted . The writer wishes to acknowledge the excellent work done by J. T. Norton and Virgil Miller on table concentration and by J. E. Conley , who suggested and did preliminary work on the direct smelting method . Many helpful suggestions were received from Dr. S. C. Lind and John Gross of the Bureau of Mines . Dissociation and vaporization of gold chlorides and bromides were investigated by a static pressure method and by Knudsen cell mass spectrometer. Two distinct chlorine and three distinct bromine pressure-temperature relation-ships were observed for the respective salts. The chlorine pressures are attributed to the dissociation of Au2Cl6 and Au2C12, and the bromine pressures to the dissociation of Au2Br6, Au2Br4, and AU2Br2, These pressure-temperature relationships were used to calculate dissociation pressure equations, enthalpies, and entropies of dissociation for each salt. Mass analysis of the vapors over AU2Cls between 83° and 152° C confirmed the existence of gaseous AU2C16. Ionization potential of this molecule is 11.0±0.1 ev and enthalpy of vaporization is 28.l±2.0 kcal/mole. Mass analysis of the vapors over the gold bromides detected only Bra in the temperature range 15°-150° C.

During 1946 several limestone deposits near Fortson, Snohomish County, Wash., were examined by the Bureau of Mines. These examinations were part of a long-range investigative program of regional mineral supplies required by the anticipated industrial development of the Pacific Northwest. The .study outlined in the following paper was specifically undertaken to disclose new sources of high-purity limestone and to appraise, their economic aspects. The deposits examined -namely the Galbraith, Climax, and Hi, Hi -are somewhat similar in physical features and geologic environment. They are lenticular and belong to the same formation of metamorphosed sediments that underlies the prominent Whitehorse Ridge.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 established mandatory dust sampling of coal mines according to procedures prescribed in the Mandatory Health Standards, title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, part 70, published in the Federal Register on April 3, 1970. A laboratory was established in the Pittsburgh Field Health Group of the Bureau of Mines to process the coal mine dust samples collected by the mine operators. This paper describes the laboratory and presents the equipment and procedures used in processing these samples.

"INTRODUCTION The largest known deposits of ilmenite and rutile in Virginia are in Amherst and Nelson Counties. Other deposits occur in the State, but their extent is not known. One of the most promising of the latter is the deposit in Roanoke County on the T. M. Bush and the H. L. Hutchins property near Roanoke. A geophysical survey was made of the deposit, followed by core drilling. In April and May 1946, four holes were drilled, totaling 822 linear feet.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. [The U. S. Bureau of Mines at its Pittsburgh Experiment Station is frequently called upon to determine by laboratory tests the explosibility of suspensions in air of various dusts encountered in mines and elsewhere. Not all dusts which are combustible or contain combustible material will form explosive mixtures with air under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure. They may not be highly combustible enough. They may contain a considerable amount of inert or non-combustible material or, the dust particles may not, be fine enough to form explosive mixtures. A knowledge off the chemical composition of a dust together with a determination of the size of the particles often gives valuable indications. But in many cases actual explosibility tests are necessary. Such a case is evidently that of powdered soap, whose explosibility hazard the Bureau was recently called upon to determine, Although an explosion which occurred in a soap plant as early as 1890 was attributed4 to powdered soap, it is apparent, due to the great number of inquiries received by the Bureau, that the hazard presented by powdered soap has not been at all generally appreciated. To the writers' knowledge, no extensive investigation of the explosibility of powdered soaps has been made. It is only recently that pure powdered soap has been manufactured on a large scale. The familiar "soap powder" in the past was usually a mixture of soap with a relatively large quantity of sodium carbonate. Often it contained large amounts of moisture and abrasive material. Even a highly combustible dust when mixed with large quantities of inert dust will not form explosive mixtures with air. Pure powdered soap, however, presents a different aspect. Pure soap is formed by combination of alkali (incombustible material) with fatty acid (combustible material). Toilet soap fray also contain a certain amount of glycerin and essential oil winch, being combustible influence the explosibility]

This longitudinal field study was designed to encourage Appalachian coal miners in West Virginia and Pennsylvania to engage in hearing-protection behaviors. Method: Participants were mailed postcards that featured either a positive, negative, or neutral message on the outside of the postcard and a message encouraging hearing protection behaviors on the inside. The first posttest measurement of the effectiveness of the persuasive messages was conducted about a week after the postcards were mailed. The delayed posttest measurement was conducted six weeks later. Results: Responses from 307 coal miners revealed that the positive or neutral messages generated significantly more self-reported hearing protection behaviors than the negative message. Identical results were obtained in a delayed posttest assessment of miners' self-reported hearing protection behaviors. The positive message was also more effective than either the neutral or negative message in preventing defensive mechanisms from emerging over time. Impact on Industry: Positive and neutral messages were convincingly more than negative messages in facilitating self-reported hearing protection behaviors among coal miners. The Bureau of Mines has completed a survey of petroleum pipe - lines by direct correspondence with the oil companies and the use of the records of the Interstate Commerce Commission in order to cover both interstate and intrastate systems . The review shows that crude petroleum and product pipe -lines in the United States had a total length of 152,814 miles on January 1 , 1950 , an increase of 25,463 miles since May 1 , 1941 , the time of the last previous survey . The expansion in pipe -line systems was due largely to new trunk-line construction , as the mileage built to carry refined products increased by 11,880 miles , and those intended for crude -oil transportation gained 6,193 miles . Trunk lines represented 60 percent of all pipe -line mileage on January 1 , 1950 , compared with 58 percent in 1941 . The average diameter of trunk -lines for crude oil , as calculated on the various sizes and weighted according to their respective lengths , increased to 9.8 inches on January 1 , 1950 , compared with 8.4 inches on May 1 , 1941. The mileage for lines up to 8 inches used in crude trunklines has decreased since the 1941 survey , while those of larger sizes have increased . The extensive use of large- diameter oil pipe -lines has developed since the construction of two major lines from Texas to the East Coast at government expense as a World War II emergency measure . The successful operation of these lines proved their economic advantages over smallerdiameter lines as well as their effectiveness in moving unprecedented volumes of oil during the period when tanker movements were restricted by submarine action in the Atlantic Ocean . The 24-inch diameter " Big Inch " line carries over 300,000 barrels daily of crude oil , and the 20 -inch " Little Big Inch " carried over 230,000 barrels daily of gasoline and light fuel oils to destinations where they were urgently needed . Hence , Although these lines were sold and converted to natural -gas service in December 1946 , after fulfilling their wartime mission , their record proved to the industry that significantly lower operating and investment costs per barrel -mile of oil moved could be achieved than were possible with the comparatively small lines in general use up to that time . the several major oil pipe -line projects that have been constructed since the late war are of large diameter pipe . To assure supplies and market outlets of sufficient magnitude to support such lines and provide adequate flexibility , ownership is often shared by several large companies whose transport needs are served in common . The principal recent expansion in facilities has been from supply points in Southwestern States toward markets in the North and East and to Gulf tidewater .

The Bureau of Mines determined agents that are effective in foaming heavy brines and oil from gas wells in severe concentrations of sodium chloride, in severe concentrations of calcium chloride, or in moderate oil-brine mixtures. Dynamic foam tests were designed to select the more effective foaming agents. Numerous foaming agents were tested in concentrated simulated brines, in oilfield brines having varied concentrations of ions, in heavy natural brines, and in a commercial brine generally used as a reservoir pressure-balancing fluid. Several agents were detected that could perform efficiently in the field under the most severe saline conditions. Agents that promote foaming in oil-brine mixtures were also determined.

The heat content above 298.15° K of ferroelectric lithium columbate (LiCbO3) was measured to 1,770° K. The Curie temperature was determined to be 1,450° K, the melting point 1,540° K, and the heat of fusion 16.94 kcal/mole. Heat content and entropy increments have been tabulated for the temperature range from i98.15° to 1,800° K. Heat contents are also given in equation form.

The purpose of this investigation was to optimize the high-temperature properties of columbium and tantalum. Columbium and tantalum were combined with selected alloying elements to achieve solid solution and dispersion strengthening. Fifty-six alloys were evaluated to determine their formability, hardness, strength at elevated temperatures, and oxidation resistance. The following six alloys showed high-temperature strength: [Cb-15Hf-5W-2Zr-4Al-4Ti-2N Cb-15Hf -5W-5Zr Cb-15.3Ti-4.1Zr-13.7Hf Ta-20Hf-4Al Ta-30Hf-4Al Ta-20Hf-5W-4Al] At 1,200° C, the columbium alloys had strength values of 40,000 psi or greater, and the tantalum alloys had strength values from 50,000 to 58,000 psi. For a 2-hour test period at 1,000° C, weight gains of only 9 and 8 mg/cm2, respectively, were observed on oxidation testing of two alloys, Cb-15Hf-5W-2Zr-4Al-4Ti-2N and Ta-20Hf-5W-4Al.

Because several new and unusual synthetic minerals were found in the system MgO-MgF₂ - SiO2 with Li * , or Nat a similar system with Geo₂ replacing Sio , plus Lit was investigated . In addition to the expected compounds of germanium , Ge - fluor - hectorite and a Ge - fluor- chrysotile were synthesized . Protoamphibole was not observed . Data are given for 69 compositions prepared in the system MgO- MgF₂ - Ge02 at 6.94 percent LiF .

A bulk sample of oxidized taconite taken from the western Mesabi Range was evaluated by the Bureau of Mines using the Bureau-developed selective flocculation-desliming-cationic (or anionic) flotation process. The raw ore sample containing 32.3 pct Fe was treated by both cationic and anionic flotation. Using the cationic system the concentrates averaged. 37.2 wt-pct of the feed and contained 62.8 pct Fe and 4.7 pet Si02 with an iron recovery of 72.3 pet. With the anionic system, concentrates averaged 37.7 wt-pet of the feed and contained 63.0 pct Fe and 5.3 pct 8i02 with an iron recovery of 73.5 pct. A comparison of reagent costs showed that the cationic process cost 144.1 cents per long ton of crude ore and the anionic process 178.7 cents per long ton of crude ore. Reclaimed water comprised 86 pct of the total water requirement for anionic flotation and 88 pct for cationic flotation. The ore used in this study was one of three samples representing about 3.25 billion tons of oxidized taconite containing from 32 to 36 pct feed iron. Previous study had indicated that selective flocculation-desliming-cationic flotation would produce concentrates from the other two samples of 61.7 pct Fe and 5.1 pct Si02 at 67-pct Fe recovery, and 63.5 pct Fe and 4.3 pet Si02 at 8S-pct Fe recovery. By developing a successful treatment for these ores, the Bureau has insured the availability of technology for processing an amount of raw iron ore which, by itself, would supply U.S iron needs for 50 to 75 years at expected consumption rates.
