For a number of years there has been a very appreciable annual,, increase in the production and recovery of natural gas and natural-gas gasoline2 in the United States the latter product being used largely for blending with gasoline from petroleum in the production of motor fuel. On account of the increased amount of oil cracking in the production of gasoline and the accompanying increased percentage of low-boiling constituents in the resulting product, the specifications for the natural gasoline suitable for blending have been altered, that is, the amounts of propane and butane which it can contain have been limited. The result has been that large quantities of the latter materials are wasted because there has been no ready market for thorn in large quantities. Because of this wasteage and because it is probable that large quantities of there and similar materials will be produced in the near future us a result of the more general use of oil cracking processes, a study was made by the Bureau of Mines, under a cooperative agreement with the assistance of the Phillips Petroleum Company, of the suitability of these materials alone or in mixtures for use as gas enricher in the carburetion of water gas for city distribution. This investigation included: (a) A study of the properties of the low boiling members of the paraffin series including pentane with particular reference to their utilization as gases.

Hand portable truck axle scales were purchased from the Martin¬Decker Company, Santa Ana, California, for weighing the rubber-tired mine shuttle cars. The scales consisted of two hydraulic load-pads, measuring 4" thick, and 21" long by 13" wide at the pad surface and one totallizer-dial indicator unit. The development of a technique to install the scales effectively for shuttle car-weighing followed an evolutionary process. The setup which finally proved to be effective entailed countersinking and level¬ling the load pads in the floor on the shuttle car trackway such that the tops of the pads were three inches below the floor level. A plat¬form consisting of two braced side-by-side 3" x 8" lumber planks was made. The platform was placed across the load pads with six inches of overlap on each side to provide room for imperfect tracking of the shuttle car. Additionally, 3" x 8" lumber planks were imbedded across the runway immediately behind and ahead of the platform. These auxili¬ary planks were firmly braced into the floor by vertical posts or jacks set against the roof; the planks constituted a stable approach platform to enable the shuttle car to roll unimpeded onto the scale platform in either direction of travel. Figure 22 shows this arrangement in detail. The setup of the scales was done during non-production hours prior to the first working shift of the week. This task took seven to twelve hours with two men. During the actual weighing experiment, the following limitations were realized. 1. "INRODUCTIONSedimentary deposits of titaniferrous magnetite occur at various localities in the eastern foothills of the Teton Ranse in Deer Lodge County, Mont. The Choteau deposit was examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer in August 1942. An exploration project was recommended.Core drilling exploration was begun in June 1945; it was concluded in August 1945, Seventy-six holes were drilled. This report presents the data obtained by the Bureau of Mines exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral, deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective, the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contri¬bution to national security and economy. This study presents the results of core-log analyses from the exploration boreholes, the analyses of face advance rates, and the results of downhole monitoring studies performed in gob gas ventholes for calculation of changes in hydraulic properties in the longwall overburden at a mine site in southwestern (SW) Pennsylvania section of Northern Appalachian Basin. In the ?rst part of the study, coal measure rocks in overburden strata were analyzed and the locations where possible fractures and bedding plane separations would occur were evaluated. In the second part, the hydraulic conductivities were computed by two different slug test analyses methods using the water level changes measured in gob gas ventholes as longwall face approached. Hydraulic conductivities were analyzed with respect to the changes in overburden depth, the locations of the borehole, and mine face advance rates. These data were used to interpret the potential productivities of the gob gas ventholes as a result of fracturing and changes in hydraulic conductivities. The general results showed that the probability of fracturing and bedding plane separations in the overburden increase between strong and weak rock interfaces. Also, the probability of bedding plane separations increases as the interface is close to the extracted coal seam. Evaluation of slug tests showed that the hydraulic conductivity developments in the boreholes and their potential production performances are affected by the underground strata and the roof materials. In situations where the roof material is stiff and thick, the development of high permeability fractures around the borehole will be less. Results also indicated that borehole location with respect to face position affects the fracturing time and permeability evolution as well. Greater overburden depths generally cause earlier fracturing as longwall face approaches, but eventually result in lower hydraulic conductivities and potentially less effective boreholes. Increasing mining rates also resulted in generally lower hydraulic conductivities in the overburden. The results of this study were intended to improve the interpretation of gob gas venthole performance and to provide better siting of these boreholes.

This report describes experimental investigations made in the batchwise retorting of Colorado oil shale. Three heat-carrying mediums were used -hot shale gas, superheated steam, and hot flue gas. Using hot Shale gas for retorting, the several variables studied were retort-inlet-gas temperature, gas velocity through the shale bed, shale particle size, and grade of shale. In studying the effect of any one of these variables on oil yield, as and operability, the other variables were maintained essentially constant. Oil yields decreased with increasing in-let-gas temperature and increasing shale-particle size, and oil yield increased with increasing grade of Shale up to 50 gallons of oil per ton of shale, beyond which the process was inoperable because of swelling and caking of the shale during retorting. Changes in gas velocity had little effect on oil yield. Gas yield increased with increasing inlet-gas temperature, gas velocity, particle size, and shale grade. Oil yields of 100 percent of Fischer assay and from 1,600 to 1,800 cubic feet of 300-B.t.u. gas per ton of shale were obtained. Two runs only were made using superheated steam. Oil yields averaged 97 percent of Fischer assay, and gas yields averaged 4,00o cubic feet per ton of shale. Retorting with a hot flue gas produced from combustion in the shale bed, as in the N-T-U process, gave excellent yields using closely sized shale with recycling of flue gas. An excess of fine shale in the charge resulted in channeling and low oil yields. Using no recycle gas, good yields were obtained that tended to decrease with increasing air rate, and the retorting rate increased with increasing air rate over the range studied. Coking was not found serious with 30-gallon shale at the air rates used.

At its College Park Metallurgy Research Center in Maryland, the Bureau of Mines has installed and is operating a 5-ton-per-hour pilot plant for continuous mechanical separation of values contained in raw urban refuse. The entire sys tern was assembled using commercially available equipment. The process relies on multistage processing including shredding, air classification, screening, gravity concentration, and electrostatic separation. Compactor trucks deliver raw refuse collected along typical routes in metropolitan Washington, D.C., to the pilot plant. The loads are separated into concentrates of (1) light-gage iron, (2) massive metals, (3) glass, (4) putrescibles and waste combustibles, (5) paper, and (6) plastics. While some refinements remain to be made in the processing system flow-sheet, the data obtained to date have been highly encouraging, indicating favorable economics for commercial-size plants.

Six years ago, I addressed the annual meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials on "Fuels of Today and Tomorrow."3/ Since then, our country has been drawn into another great war of veritably global extent, with unprecedented demands on fuels, foods, and materials in general. My purpose in this address is to review the changes in fuel supply and demand since 1937 and to give you my views on the outlook for the future. CONDITIONS IN. 1237 Daring 1936 the United States produced and consumed one-third of the world production of coal, two-thirds of the petroleum, and about 95 percent of the natural gas. Two-thirds of the oil produced in all countries since the discovery well was drilled in 1859 had come from American wells. With the exception of the three depression years 1931, 1932, and 1933, new oil reserves were being discovered since 1924 well in excess of our increasing rate of consumption. Discoveries of natural gas, likewise, were tremendous in volume, and this fuel was being transported to most parts of the country by pipe lines; some of them more than 1,000 miles long. We had all kinds of mineral fuels in abundance and at prices that did not stint anyone in the maximum utilization of the mechanical devices that were being developed on every hand. No one suspected that the time might come in a few years when, gasoline would be doled out to some of us at the rate of 1-1/2 gallons a week or that many of our fuel-oil furnaces would have to be converted to burn coal. Of course, these restrictions are due to unusual war conditions, such as lack of coastwise tanker transportation, unprecedented demand for aviation gasoline, and the shortage of rubber for automotive tires. However, these shortages do call our attention to the vital part of petroleum reserves in our country's future position among nations. Therefore, it is of special interest to review briefly the relations of recent supply and demand with respect to our various mineral fuels.

"Bit wear has been proven to have a significant effect on respirable dust generation in coal cutting system. The mechanism of bit wear can be adhesion, abrasion. oxidation, or diffusion. depending on cutting conditions. This paper presents a portion of an extensive ongoing series of studies to better understand the principles of bit wear and dust generation. Used bits collected from underground coal mines were analyzed to identify the basic principle of bit wear in coal and rock cutting. Distribution of weight loss and conical height loss of worn bits were studied and bit wear was divided into four stages according to weight loss. Utilizing these worn bits, Laboratory experiments have been carried out to study the effects of bit wear on coal cutting system and respirable dust generation. An Automated Rotary Coal Cutting Simulator was use to perform the experiments. Acoustic emission monitoring is applied to study the effect of bit wear on fracture formation and dust generation. INTRODUCTIONContinuous miners were introduced in the 1950’s and became the major equipment in underground coal production. Now the larger production in the coal industry has increased the demand for continuous miners and their use. It is well known that serious dust problem is also introduced with the use of continuous miners, especially with recent increase in productivity. On the other hand, legal restrictions are made ·more strict by the Mine Health & Safety Administration for the respirable dust generated by the continuous miners to prevent coal workers from incidence of pneumoconiosis. The incidence of pneumoconiosis depends on dust concentration, exposure time, and physical properties of dust. Of them, dust concentration is the best parameter for the assessment of the risk of pneumoconiosis. Although a lot of research work has been done to reduce dust concentration substantially, some areas are still required further investigation to meet the strict regulations. One of the areas is about bit wear and dust generation. In this area, the principles of bit wear and effect of bit wear on dust generation are major concerns."

Existing thermodynamic data for compounds of the rare-earth metals are few in number and often inaccurate because, in the past, it was difficult to obtain samples that were pure enough and reasonable in cost--a situation that is rapidly improving. This paper reports the results of low-temperature heat-capacity and high-temperature heat-content measurements for cerous fluoride (CeF3) and supplies the first such published data for a rare-earth fluoride. The low-temperature heat-capacity data cover the temperature range 51°-298° K. and serve to evaluate the entropy at 298.15° K. The high-temperature heat-content data cover the temperature range 298°-1,799° K., including the temperature and heat of fusion. The results are assembled for ready use in thermodynamic calculations. Cerous fluoride is one of the important intermediate compounds in the production of cerium metal.

"INTRODUCTION This investigation is a continuation of previous work 3/4/5/ on the gaseous products of permissible explosives with and without sheaths. The range of oxygen balance of the explosives has been considerably increased. As has been shown previously, certain approximate relations exist between the volumes of gaseous products and the oxygen balance. Further systematization of the data is not feasible, since the method of theoretioal calculatln of the gaseous product is not yet satisfactorily developed. In a previously described method, 6/ it has been assumed that the explosion occurs at constant volume and that thermodynamic equilibrium is established. Apart from the presumably less important uncertainty of some of the thermodynamic data, it is not known how the confinement of the shots in the Bichel gage or the Crawshaw-Jones gage should be treated, or whether thermodynamic equilibrium is fully attained; nor can the extent to which the equilibrium composition changes during the subsequent period of expansion and cooling be judged with any reliability. Therefore, no calculations have been attempted. However, in anticipation of possible future theoretical interest and as an aid in answering practical problems, the new data are presented in the same minute detail as was done previously."

"Accidents at coal mines in the United States in September 1926 resulted in the loss of 170 lives, according to information furnished to the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, by State mine inspectors. Of this number 125 occurred at bituminous mines and 45 in the anthracite field. As the bituminous output of coal for September was 48,976,000 tons, and the production of anthracite was 8,444,000 tons, the fatalities reported represented a death rate of 2.55 per million tons for bituminous mines and 5.33 for anthracite mines. The industry as a whole showed a fatality rate of 2.6 per million tons of coal produced in September 1925 the rate for bituminous coal mines was 3.29; the anthracite mines were idle in September last year due to a strike.During the first nine months of the present year 1,759 men have been killed by accidents at the coal mines throughout the United States, resulting in a death rate, per million tons of coal produced, of 3.76 as compared with 3.95 for the same period in 1925. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed a nine-month fatality rate of 3.53 which was about the same as the corresponding rate from January to September in 1925. The anthracite rate for the present year, however, shows a decrease of about 17 per cent; that is, the rate has declined from 6.36 to 5.28.Records covering the first nine months of 1926 show that 12 ""major"" disasters, that is, disasters in which five or more men were killed at one time, have resulted in the loss of 271 lives as against 10 disasters and 199 deaths in the corresponding months in 1925. The fatality rates for these disaster: alone were 0.579 and 0.465, respectively. One major explosion occurred at Tahona, Oklahoma, on September 3, 1926, in which 16 men lost their lives.An analysis of the principal causes of the 1,759 fatalities for the first nine months of the present year shows a reduction in the death rate as a whole and for falls of roof and coal and for explosives, but an increase in haulage, gas and dust explosions, and electricity. This Bureau of Mines publication presents guidelines for mining near surface and underground bodies of water. The guidelines were based on information developed under contract in three phases of study, as follows: (1) Collection and documentation of data from worldwide sources; (2) application of existing guidelines, foreign, Federal, and State, to case histories of previous inundations; and (3) development of recommended guidelines for underground coal mining near bodies of water aimed at maximum efficient utilization of underground coal resources consistent with minimizing inundation hazards. While the contract guidelines were for the mining of coal seams, they may also be used for mining any tabular sedimentary mineral deposit. Tables are given for the determination of the size of coal pillars needed; for other bedded deposits, similar tables could be determined based on their strength properties.

Erosion corrosion of 12 alloys in phosphoric acid waste water was studied by the Bureau of Mines. Tests were conducted on oblate spheroids or cylindrical specimens in 12-and 60-cm-diam ball mills by grinding phosphate rock in gypsum pond water with a starting pH of 1.6. For comparison, tests were conducted while grinding phosphate rock in plain water. Static corrosion tests in gypsum pond water also were conducted. For all alloys, the wear by erosion-corrosion (milling with gypsum pond water) was greater than the sum of erosion (milling with water) plus static corrosion. Erosion-corrosion wear was about 1,500 to 3,000 mpy for the alloyed white cast irons, 1,000 to 1,400 mpy for commercial steel ball material and type 316 stainless steel, and 600 to 900 mpy for nickel-base alloys and a high-manganese, nitrided stainless steel. Alloy costs per unit of phosphate rock 'processed favor a low-alloy, high-carbon steel or a high-manganese, nitrided stainless steel.

Of the 15 selected non fuel mineral commodities detailed in table 12, only 3 indicated increases in worldwide consumption in 1992. As in 1991, decline in consumption levels of the selected commodities can be attributed to reduced levels of use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. Of the remaining 12 commodities, 2 magnesium and cadmium, stayed relatively the same, while the other 10, including iron and steel, all recorded decreases. Global consumption of iron ore is estimated to have fallen about 3.5 % or about 30 million tons. This is a greater decline than what was estimated for production of iron ore, which is down only 2.7% or nearly 26.5 million tons, suggesting an addition to stocks. The consumption trend for iron and steel has been declining since 1989. This has mainly been due to the continued drops in use in the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. Even as the European economy begins to turn upward, there may only be a slight increase in consumption of iron, steel, and cement, considering the high cost of construction needed to modernize factories and buildings in Eastern Europe. Many feel that the economies of these countries are limited by the current status of their industries.

The first authorization, in November 1940, was for a plant of only several hundred pounds capacity at Boulder City, Nev. Improvements in the process and subsequent additions to some sections have enabled the plant to produce more than 2,000 pounds of manganese per day for substantial periods. By the time pilot-plant operations were suspended in June 1945, over 1,500,000 pounds of metal had been produced. The future of electrolytic manganese production obviously depends not only on satisfactory development of methods but on availability of raw material and demonstration of valuable uses. Investigations of manganese-ore deposits in this country, made since 1938 by the Bureau of Mines, have revealed large amounts of ore suitable for making electrolytic manganese. At first the pilot plant was operated on ore from the Three Kids mine near Las Vegas, Nev. After practical features of the process had been worked out, other ores from throughout the United States were tested in the pilot plant. The purpose of this paper is to compare the results obtained on the following ores: Three Kids; Ladd mine, Tracy, Calif.; Chamberlain, S. Dak., nodules; and ore from Metals Reserve stockpiles at Deming, N. Mex.; Cushman, Ark.; and Philipsburg, Mont.

The dust exposure of the longwall shearer operator is usually determined by his position relative to the cutting drums. The dust generated during cutting may travel up-wind, against the primary airflow, and be carried out into the walkway where it can contaminate the intake air for as much as 10 feet outby the shearer operator's controls. Thus, both head and tail drum operators are exposed to un-acceptably high levels of air-borne respirable dust. One Solution The latest generation of long-wall shearers has features that make the use of radio remote or umbilical (hard wire) remote control relatively easy to implement. Remote control can enable shearer operators to control machines from positions that are less dusty than normal control stations. With either type, the head-drum operator can now control the shearer from a position up to 20 feet on the intake-air side of the shearer, while the tail-drum operator's station is now located across from the head drum.

Alloys of manganese and copper containing from 65 to 80 percent manganese possess mechanical strength and vibration-damping capacity in an unusually high degree. The success of their use in reducing vibration in structures depends, to some extent, on their fatigue properties. This report describes the results of fatigue tests on alloys of four compositions. Three metallurgical conditions were investigated for each alloy. Or the basis of the data in this report, the general rule that vibration-damping manganese-copper alloys are comparable to mild steel in hardness and strength may be extended to include fatigue strength. Methods for casting and fabricating these alloys were described in a previous report,4 which contained data on the mechanical and damping properties of the solid-solution alloys, and on alloys aged for 2 hours at 450° C. The aging heat treatment of solution-treated alloys results in optimum mechanical and damping properties throughout the range of specified composition. However, in the present work, measurements also were made on alloys aged for 2 hours at 500° C., because it was theorized that the additional precipitation of a-manganese under these conditions might have a pronounced effect on the fatigue strength of the alloy.

The effect of cracking by increasing the free space above the charge on the composition and yields of the volatile products from carbonization of Pittsburgh-bed coal and one industrially used blend from Eastern United States and one from Western United States was investigated with the BM-AGA carbonization apparatus. Increasing the free space above the charge from 1 inch to 3 inches, to 6 inches, and to 9 inches resulted in lower tar yields and increased gas and light oil yields. Anthracene and naphthalene yields were increased; quinoline and benzene insoluble fractions of both the tar and pitch increased considerably with increased free space, although the carbon content of the tars and pitches increased only slightly. Increased cracking, occasioned by the increase in free space, resulted in a decrease in the yields of tar acids, tar bases, neutral oils, olefins, aromatics, and paraffins and naphthenes. Gas composition was relatively constant; hydrogen and methane tended to increase and ethane decrease. Results of the investigation are being used to design a unit to upgrade the volatile products of carbonization by cracking the hot products as they leave the carbonization chamber.
