[Methods of distilling topped crude oils and distillates under vacuum, accompanied by good fractionation, have taken a place of major importance in the refining industry. In the refining of petroleum products it is generally desirable to produce a distillate of good quality, and this objective is attained by fractionation of a high degree. The laboratory and commercial practice have proved chat by varying the amount of fractionation the quality of the distillate car be changed, and refiners are cognizant of the advantages of good fractionation. Distillation-under high vacuum, however, is a relatively new practice in petroleum refining, and only during the last few years has there boon an indication that that this method ray become a general practice in the industry. Vacuum distillation offers many advantages over older methods of distilling petroleum products. Vacuum combined with steam distillation, for example, is replacing straight-stream distillation because the quality of the products of vacuum and, steam distillation surpasses that of those produced by straight-steam distillation. Although the injection of varying amounts of steam in a vacuum unit is common practice, the amount of steam used is becoming less as the vacuum within the unit is increased. Exposure to mineral aerosol is an occupational health hazard in mining and mineral processing industries because of the risk of developing pneumoconiosis. Agricola (1556) described this hazard for metal mining in Carpathia. He described shortness of breath and consumption, conditions that are now associated with asthma and emphysema. By the end of the nineteenth century, several respiratory diseases were known to affect miners, including silicosis and coal workers' pneumoconiosis (Fletcher, 1948; Seaton et al., 1981). For example, silicosis, not tuberculosis, was clearly recognized as the hazard in the Vermont granite quarries and stone-cutting sheds (McFarland, 1927). The Gauly Bridge Tunnel disaster in the mid-1930s caused the deaths of an estimated 700 workers by acute silicosis and focused the nation's attention on this disease (Cherniack, 1986). By the mid-twentieth century, it was clear that risk of simple pneumoconiosis is associated with a miner's cumulative exposure to mine aerosol in the respirable size range and that prevention lies in reducing that exposure through regulation (Seaton, 1986). In the United States, regulation of mine worker exposure to airborne mine dust is the responsibility of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in the U.S. Department of Labor. The key legislation relating to improved mine worker health was the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, enacted in 1969 (U.S. Congress, 1969) and subsequently amended as the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (U.S. Congress, 1977). MSHA receives technical assistance from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). NIOSH also provides recommended exposure limits (RELs) for contaminants to MSHA. MSHA's regulation of mines includes the establishment of a dust standard administratively based on the these RELs. Some mine operators must submit a dust control plan designed to meet the dust standard. Periodic mine inspections determine if mines are com- plying with both the dust standard and the dust control plans (MSHA, 1991). The most common dust measurements are those for respirable dust (according to the definition given in Fig. 26-7), that is, the fraction of aerosol particles able to reach the gas exchange region of the lungs. The other health-related size fractions (inhalable and thoracic-see Fig. 25-1, and "total" dust) are also occasionally measured. A "total" dust measurement is defined by the common practice of the last 30 years or so, using 25 mm or 37mm plastic cassettes (e.g., from PAL, MIL, SKC ). The types of mines have been categorized

Three electrorefining cells were designed to investigate various factors associated with the electrorefining of reject - grade titanium sponge . Operation of the cells provided information on cell design as well as on how design and operating variables affected the quality of the titanium product . A sodium chloride - titanium chloride electrolyte was used , and the electrolyte chambers had capacities ranging from 400 to 3,500 pounds of molten salt . Major factors investigated were electrolyte composition , temperature and useful life , effect of various cathode shapes and materials of construction , methods for removing cathode deposits , effect of current density and cell potential , and the mechanics of deposit growth and crystal morphology . One of the cells was in intermittent operation over a 4 - year period and produced 2 tons of refined titanium . A product with a hardness of 80 or less Bhn (Brinell hardness number ) was consistently and easily obtained . Some metal with a hardness of less than 60 Bhn was produced . In one of the cells in which the electrolyte was held at operating temperature with an internal heater an ac input of 25 kw maintained 3,500 pounds of electrolyte at 850 ° C , but with an external heater 35 kw was required to maintain 400 pounds at 850° C.

Studies by the Bureau of Mines have identified geologic structures in mine roof rock that contribute to many roof falls in Appalachian coal mines. These structures, including paleochannels, scours, pinchouts, slickensides, clay veins, crevasse splays, and joints, can often be identified during, and sometimes before, mine development. Mine projections can be revised to reduce the adverse effects of discontinuitites in roof structure; large roof areas of laminated sandstone or incompetent strata generally can be delineated or inferred from exploratory drill hole data, and the need for supplementary support can be anticipated. Accurate descriptions of roof geology also provide some indication of optimum length and type of roof bolts that should be installed.

In the fall of 1953 the Philippine Bureau of Mines, under a Foreign Operations Administration Technical Assistance (FOA-TA) program, began a systematic investigation of the nickel content of the well-known Surigao laterite areas, on the island of Nonoc northeast of Mindanao, to determine the occurrence, distribution, and grade of nickel contained in the laterite and in the subjacent serpentine. At the same time, a technical review of the possibility of producing commercial ferronickel from the nickeliferous materials in the Philippine Islands was made, and a smelting process was suggested. The proposed process would be similar to that developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines for the reduction of the nickeliferous serpentine occurring in the Nickel Mountain ?deposit at Riddle, Oreg. The potential avail-ability of electric power from the Maria Cristina facilities at 3 mils per kw.-hr. would enhance the economic possibility of this program. Development of an economically feasible process for recovering nickel from the nickeliferous serpentines and laterites should lead to the establishment of a new industry in the Philippines, to the development of a source of nickel in the Far East, of which at present there is none, and to partial solution of the problem of supplying the free world with nickel. Enough preliminary reconnaissance had been completed by early 1954 to permit sampling of the deposit for metallurgical investigations. The FOA then requested the Federal Bureau of Mines Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., to conduct preliminary electric smelting studies on nickeliferous serpentine and laterite samples.

"The factors that determine the efficiency of reduction of iron oxides by gaseous reducing agents may be considered in two classes; those which effect the equilibrium between the reacting substances end their products, and those which affect the rete of reaction. Both sets are of prectical importance, the former as influencing the maximum possible efficiency and the latter as determining what fraction of the maximum yield may be readily or profitably obtained. In addition, the thermal changes attending the reduction greatly affect the chance of successful industrial application of any such process, and knowledge of them is necessary for the intelligent design of apparatus and control of the reaction. Some aspects of each of these three divisions of the problem are discussed below.I. This study describes five fatal accidents so unusual in occurrence that the chain of circumstances bringing them about may never be duplicated. The intent of this publication is to illustrate that everyone working underground is subjected, at all times, to definite inherent mining hazards and that safety devices, though provided, often are ineffective or not used. It is hoped that a study of these fatal accidents in bituminous-coal mines will show workers and safety engineers that nothing can be taken for granted. Safety planning with continuous study can prevent these unusual accidents as well as the routine recurring types, which cause the majority of coal-mining injuries. The treacherous, fatalistic philosophy that "it can't happen to me" or that "when my time's up I'll get it regardless of what I do," still prevails among individuals and even safety engineers. The individual or safety man who believes in luck as applied to safety should not read any further, since this study was written for the sincere, safety-minded individual who accepts the prevention of all accidents as a challenge to his knowledge, initiative, persuasiveness, and salesmanship.

Basic data, in figures and tables, are brought together in this publication for the production of coal in the United States from 1800 to 1960, for crude petroleum, natural gas liquids, and natural gas from 1859 to 1960, and for hydropower since 1900. Production for each segment of the fuels complex in the principal producing States from 1946 to 1960 is shown. Data are not included for consumption as such or for imports and exports.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the precipitation strengthening of lead¬-base alloys containing 0.5 through 4 weight-percent combined Cd plus Sb. The Cd and Sb were alloyed in a 1-to-1 atomic ratio which maintained compositions along the quasi-binary section Pb-CdSb. Tensile properties, creep rates, and stress-rupture values were obtained on alloys in the aged condition. The highest tensile strength was observed in an alloy of Pb-3 CdSb, After aging for 6 months at 90°±3° F, this alloy had a mean tensile strength of 8,950 psi with 15-percent elongation. An aged alloy of Pb-1 CdSb exhibited a steady state creep rate of 1.2 X 10-3 percent per day at a stress of 500 psi and a temperature of 90°±3° F. Times to rupture at stresses up to 4,000 psi and at a temperature of 90°±3° F were obtained for some compositions.

[This paper sets forth the burning characteristics of coke used as a domestic fuel as shown by work of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and others. Coke is a truly smokeless solid fuel and is held in high regard for this quality. Ways are being found for making commercial coke from a wider range of cools than heretofore, and tale use of coke for domestic heating is increasing. This circular presents data on individual plants of the fuel-briquet and packaged-fuel industries that responded to the Bureau of Mines annual economic survey and reported production for 1959. The companies named herein represent virtually all producers of processed fuels of mineral origin. A few small companies may not have been canvassed or failed to respond, however, as some plants operate intermittently, and the survey is voluntary. No consideration was given to size of the plant and all plants that reported commercial production were included. Specifically excluded were plants that manufactured briquets from wood charcoal. Fuel briquets and packaged fuel are manufactured solid fuels, fabricated from fine-sized mineral fuels by mixing with binders and compressing into small individual shapes. Briquets usually are produced as small, pillow-shaped pieces, 2 to 4 inches long, weighing 2 to 4 ounces. Packaged fuel consists of 3- to 4-inch cubes, 6 or 8 of which are wrapped in heavy kraft paper to form a package weighing 10 to 15 pounds. The overall size of a popular package is 10-112 x 7 x 3-1/2 inches. Briquets are durable, may be stored outdoors, and shipped and used as bulk fuel. Packaged fuel is fragile, and must be stored indoors to keep it from deteriorating. Whereas briquets are consumed in many areas as a general residential fuel, packaged fuel is more of a specialty item, used at times as a supplement to other fuels. Package fuel is burned without removing the paper and referred to as the "white-glove" fuel.

Two methods are presented to determine the mechanical shaft torque as a function of time for an induction motor. The methods are based on the motor equivalent circuit and use as input variables of the motor terminal voltage, line current, input power, and power factor. One method uses all four variables and the other uses only voltage and current. The test data deals specifically with continuous miners, but the theory could be applied to other mining machines driven by multiple induction motors. Results are given for the tramming, maneuvering, cutting, and cutting with loading operations and are in the form of a minimum, a maximum, and an average of the shaft-torque time function. The theoretical development and computer implementation are discussed for both methods.

THE TOTAL VALUE of sales of coal-chemical materials in the 10-year period 1948-57 increased 34 percent or at an average annual rate of approximately 3.5 percent. According to the Chemical Industry Facts Book, third edition, 1957, published by Manufacturing Chemists' Association, Inc., the production of industrial chemicals since 1939 "has grown at au average rate of about 10 percent" a year (p. 7). The rapid growth of the chemical industry increased requirements of chemical raw materials at a faster pace than could be supplied by coal carboniza¬tion, and view sources of supply became necessary. The petroleum industry in the past decade increased tremendously the flow of chemical raw materials to the chemical industry through the processing of crude petroleum and natural gas. Whereas coal carbonization supplied most of the raw materials for manufacturing synthetic organic chemicals before World War 11, coke ovens supplied only about 40 percent of the total used in 1957. Although the proportion of chemical raw materials supplied to the chemical industry by coke-oven operators declined, this source of supply is large and important to our economy. In 1957, the value of coal-chemical materials sold, including surplus gas used by producing companies, totaled $358 million, compared with $267 million in 1948. Major factors that contributed to this gain were (1) increased production of all coal chemicals and (2) higher prices for tax and light-oil products. Gains in output of coal chemicals resulted principally from expansion in carbonizing capacity of coke plants owned and operated by the iron and steel industry, as yields of the basic coal¬-chemical materials (tar, ammonia, light oil, and gas) varied only slightly during the 10 years under review.

Electrorefining tests using titanium-nitrogen alloys as anode material showed that no significant quantity of nitrogen was transferred to the cathode deposit. The nitrogen of the anode remained in the scale, and the titanium-nitrogen alloy was anodically insoluble in the electrolyte when the nitrogen content was 11 weight-percent.

For a study such as this, which summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the numerous U.S. Bureau of Mines country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in their country and regional reports that comprise the five other volumes of the international studies of the Minerals Yearbook, it is clearly impossible to cite all sources of information used in its presentation, but some recognition seems due. Generally speaking, this study and its related detailed studies on countries and areas would be much more difficult, if not impossible, without the efforts of the personnel of our counterpart agencies throughout the world. Information they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or those of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations on which this work rests. Thus, we must begin by expressing our appreciation to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies for their contributions.

The functional safety of programmable electronic (PE) mining systems is an international issue and concern. From 1995 to 2001, 11 PE-related mining incidents in the U.S. were reported by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA); 71 PE-related mining incidents were reported in Australia. MSHA does not have regulations for formal evaluations of the functional safety of PE mining systems. Hence, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with MSHA and the industry, generated the NIOSH safety framework for functional safety of PE mining systems. An overview of the NIOSH framework is given; the key framework elements, the safety life cycle and safety integrity levels are detailed. The safety framework approach has impacted the national and Australian mining industries by enabling the industries to advance from an ad-hoc approach to a formalized and systematic functional safety process. In retrospect, valuable lessons were learned for addressing functional safety and for changing industry perspectives and practices. These lessons continue to benefit mining and are applicable to other industries as well.

Electrical characteristics of positive corona are presented for air in a 2 - in - diam electrostatic precipitator operating under dynamic conditions at temperatures of 600 ° to 1,500 ° F and pressures of 0 to 80 psig . Results show that current - voltage relationships depend solely on air density . Comparison of data on positive corona with previously published data on negative corona demonstrates a higher sparkover voltage and a wider range of operability for positive corona at temperatures above 375 ° F. The possibility of achieving higher voltages with positive polarity as indicated by these experiments implies several advantages for the use of positive corona in precipitators to allow better removal of suspended material from hot gases . Based on the physics of an ion in an electrical field , a theoretical equation is derived to define current - voltage characteristics of positive corona in terms of air density . Constants for the equation are evaluated from Calculated current - voltage values at different air densities agree reasonably well with experimental data .

An inexpensive technique that laboratory studies indicated would significantly reduce seepage in irrigation canals was devised and tested through research sponsored by the Bureau of Reclamation and the Missouri River Basin Field Committee. Laboratory tests simulating optimum field conditions determined that easily applied sodium carbonate solutions made test beds of canal lining materials virtually impermeable for long periods. The study comprised alternative laboratory treatments of 3-inch-deep test beds of canal earths with 74 water-soluble chemicals in search of one 01' more that would effectively improve the water barrier characteristics of the component clays. Sodium carbonate, one of the least expensive, was among the most effective. The addition of 0,4 lb of reagent per sq yd greatly reduced the seepage from typical, highly permeable test beds. The reagent penetrated and sealed surface for about a 1.5-inch depth.

This report, based on information made available by four uranium-producing companies, describes the geology, exploration, open-pit development and mining, and shaft sinking in the Gas Hills uranium district of Wyoming. Open-pit stripping features motor-scrapers push-loaded by crawler or rubber-tired tractors. The ground generally can be ripped, and little blasting is necessary. Detailed data are given on grouting for ground stabilization in sinking a small-diameter shaft in the relatively unconsolidated sandstone and siltstone, Cost and performance data are presented as made available by the companies.
