The Hercudet Non-Electric Delay Blasting Cap System provides a means of achieving greater flexibility in the use of delays, using totally enclosed gas detonation circuits which eliminate the concussive effects of detonating cord trunklines in the confinement of access tunnels beneath pillars of ore. This is an account of one such pillar blast.

Since 1967 Hydro Quebec has undertaken the control of blasting and its effects at its power development sites. Blasts have been monitored using a commercially available three component seismograph. Initially, vibration records were used to establish the relationships between vibration level (resultant of three components), explosive weight and distance for various blasting operations.

It has been recently argued that rock strength has little effect on the final results of pre-split blasting and is of only minor importance when blasting rock in general. However, it can be shown that the maximum borehole separation for optimal perimeter blasting results with constant borehole and loading configuration is strongly dependent on the tensile strength of the rock.

Commercial emulsion explosives are typically characterized by their relatively high detonation velocities due to the intimacy of oxidizer and fuel and to their sensitization with glass microballoons. However, numerous blasting operations in softer, more porous rock formations are better fragmented with slower shooting explosives. Although mixtures of emulsions with large amounts of ANFO (60-80%) can considerably reduce the high velocities, little water resistance is achieved with low levels of emulsion blended with ANFO. "Water proof" blends containing typically 50 percent of emulsion become quite costly due to escalating powder factors in ANFO patterns. Blends of sensitized emulsions with 20-30 percent ANFO retain the high velocity characteristics of the emulsions as well as increased densities which can also adversely affect blasting results in softer rock formations. The introduction of a reliable and predictable on-site gassing process for sensitization and density control of repumpable emulsions, with or without added ANFO, offers the end user the option of supplying a final product more suited to his blasting needs. The capability to widely vary final product loading densities and consequently product detonation rates better tailors the final explosive to different rock characteristics. The beneficial advantages of this system in softer rock formations have been well documented. Overall comparison between these variable density products with typical repump emulsions containing solid density control will be reviewed. Besides the obvious cost advantages and safety advantages of these systems the end user is provided more definitive control of his blasting operation.

It is well known that emulsion explosives can be dead-pressed especially in underground blasting. Voids in emulsion explosives will affect such malfunction of explosives. To clarify the factors that affect the dead-pressing phenomena, the characteristics of the pressure wave propagation in emulsion explosives were investigated. Three types of microballoons .or microbubbles, glass microballoons(GMB), resin microballoons(RMB) and chemical gas bubbles, were used as sensitizers for emulsion explosives. The pressure profiles inside the explosives were measured to determine the effects of the microballoons or microbubbles contained. The underwater explosion test and the large-scale drop hammer test were carried out to load the explosives with a dynamic pressure and a quasi-dynamic pressure respectively. In the underwater explosion test, the pressure profiles in the emulsion explosives were measured by a piezo-electric pressure gauge inserted to the center of the explosive cartridge which had a diameter of 30mm. In the large-scale drop hammer test, the same type of pressure gauge was placed at the bottom of the explosives. From these experiments, the following results were obtained ; A) The pressure profiles in the sample explosives sensitized by RMB or chemical gases were sharp, while in the sample explosives sensitized by GMB the profile was broad. B) The peak pressure levels in the sample explosives sensitized by RMB or chemical gases were twice as high as that in the sample explosives sensitized by GMB in the underwater explosion test. However in the large-scale drop hammer test, the amplification of the peak pressure is low compared with in the underwater explosion test. C) The impulse value was independent of the types of the microballoons or microbubbles in both tests. It was concluded that the type of the microballoons or microbubbles significantly influenced the characteristics of the pressure wave propagation in emulsion explosives.

The Hercudet™ non-electric delay blasting cap system has exhibited outstanding performance and economic results in surface work. The versatility inherent in the system, which allows the combining of the built-in cap delays with the tubing delay (i.e.: the travel time of the gas reaction through the tubing), has resulted in outstanding blast results. Examples of blast patterns used, details of the blast design process, and recently-developed methods of use of Hercudet for surface initiation of detonating cord downlines are given in the paper.

In many areas of the eastern United States, especially in the Midwest, past mining activities have left large and extensive underground openings. Now, renewed mining is occurring in such areas in surface pits. Also, construction blasting often occurs in rock over such old openings. Within the last fifteen years, some attention has been given to the interaction between surface blasting and underground cavities; concern has been expressed about the possible changes in vibrations transmitted through areas underlain by old mine workings (Siskind, Stachura and Nutting 1987). Previous studies also had indicated that underground openings could influence transmission of surface mine blast vibrations (see, for example, Woodward-Clyde Consultants 1977). The principal concern is that underground openings under surface blasting may intensify low-frequency vibrations. If such intensification occurs, use of available equations to predict peak particle velocities and to design blasting patterns and select blasting parameters could lead to possibly damaging ground shaking.

Fragmentation size assessment faces difficult problems, traditionally involving tedious and time consuming procedures. Early work had been directed towards developing empirical methods of predicting rather than measuring fragmentation. More recent development of computer-based image processing techniques which derive size distributions by analysis of photographic or video images are reviewed. These are now being adapted by various workers to fragmentation analysis in mines. Results are presented from experimental work aimed to establish the accuracy and precision of photographic techniques for muckpile assessment. Reference is made to McGill fragmentation studies at surface and underground mines in Canada, relating to experience gained in photographic and image processing techniques. The various factors that affect such techniques as well as their limitations and strengths are discussed.

Many open pit operations are faced with the apparently conflicting requirements of providing large quantities of fragmented rock for the processing plant and of minimizing the amount of damage inflicted upon the surrounding pit slopes. A reasonable compromise between these two conflicting demands may often be found by means of simple engineering of production blasts.

In 2008 a paper from the same source describing four actual cases of exposure of electronic detonators to lightning strikes was presented. It was shown that electronic detonators, like other initiation systems, are vulnerable to very close or direct lightning strikes. At the time of submitting this abstract no further incidents with lightning have been experienced. As a result of those original incidents, and in order to understand how the safety devices inside electronic detonators break down, two series of tests have been done, each with 2 detonator designs. In the first series detonators were subjected to capacitor discharges up to 6kV and 1kJ in energy. In the second series the intensity was increased to 800kV and 24kJ in energy. In the second series, more electrical energy was delivered to the detonator assembly than the explosive energy of the detonator. In both series both detonators showed a spectacular ability to resist very high discharge energies. The tests are described in detail with supporting photographs. The data for both pin-to-pin and pin-to-case (more relevant to lightning) are presented and discussed. The mechanism of breakdown of safety devices is now understood better and the learning is being used to design more robust products. The Dynamics Effects Laboratory at the University of Maryland conducted a series of very small scale tests to measure the impulse delivered to a plate by the detonation of an explosive charge which was buried in saturated sand. These tests were conducted to support a full scale tests series being supported by the Navy (NSWC Indian Head Division) to learn more about loads applied to structures by explosive detonation. For each of the tests being predicted, a series of three tests were conducted at Maryland, one with a 0.203 gm charge, one with a .609 gm charge, and one with a 3.3 gm charge. A high speed digital camera (500 frames per second) was used to record the displacement of the plate as a function of time. From this the initial velocity of the plate was determined and then the impulse delivered to the plate by the explosive. A best fit line through the data was determined for the three model tests conducted and this equation was used to extrapolate the predicted impulse for the full scale tests.

Through the 119 year history of the Homestake Mine various methods of raise mining have been used, these include conventional, bored, and drop raises. These raises provide passage for men and supplies, provide ventilation, transfer broken rock from level to level, and serve as emergency escapeways. As the 1980’s came to a close, many of the larger ore bodies in the mine had been mined out. This has resulted in many crown pillar situations that required a method to mine them. In addition, the Homestake ore body also contains numerous ore reserves that have short vertical height. The ore itself can be from vertical to 50 degrees in dip. Due to the high cost of drift and ramp development many of these ore bodies are subeconomic using conventional mechanized cut and fill mining.

As part of its ongoing research concerning rock fragmentation by blasting, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a series of test blasts where six cylinder-shaped pieces of granite rock were fragmented using high explosives. The tests were intended to: 1) Establish a dataset that could be used in the development and verification of theoretical models that simulate rock blasting and 2) To add to the fragmentation data currently being collected by Bureau researchers. The cylindrical geometry was chosen so that the fragmentation could be directly compared to two-dimensional computer simulations that assume an axisymmetric configuration as well as more sophisticated three-dimensional models. The granite cylinders, Carnelian granite and Charcoal granite, ranged in size from about 0.46 meters (18 inches) to 0.58 meters (23 inches) in diameter by 0.91 meters (36 inches) to 1.52 meters (60 inches) in length. Physical rock properties tests performed on the Charcoal granite cylinders indicated that the rocks did in fact have similar physical characteristics. PETN-based detonating cord and dynamite were used as the explosive charges and estimates of the values of some important physical properties are given. For the first five tests, the blasted rock was contained by a heavy rope mat suspended inside the Twin Cities Research Center's blasting shelter. The fragments from each of these shots were sorted and weighed to determine the corresponding fragment-size distributions. Even though different types of granite and cylinder sizes were used, similar fragment distributions were produced from shots that used a similar explosive, in this case the PETN-based detonating cord, and comparable burden-to-charge diameter ratios. Significantly coarser fragmentation was produced from a blast that used dynamite as the explosive charge. Fragment velocities were calculated using photographic data from the sixth test which was shot unrestrained in a quarry and filmed with high-speed cameras.

The impact of a higher copper price on the open pit metal mining sector has derived in a faster and safer way in which the mining operation of broken and mineralised material is carried out. In this regard, a good control of bench stability allows a lesser extra removal of material and so more safety to get the planned ore. The stability is ensured through an efficient drilling and blasting, applying the current technology and available know-how. An efficient use of energy through low-density explosives which are the most adequate for the existing solid rock releasing energy in a smoother way through a deterministic detonation sequence which is the application experience presented here. This application experience has two main technological factors; the adequate type of explosive for the kind of rock, in terms of velocity of propagation (Vp) together with the use of a determined detonation sequence and the appropriate designs, which allow to reduce the level of damage to the walls and to maintain a minor backbreaking through quantification with vibration modelling carried out at the near field. The reductions achieved were 30% lower in peak particle velocity.
