At its peak in the 1970s, South Africa was responsible for around 80% of global gold production and, according to the US Geological Survey, it still has the largest share of gold reserves - as well as 90% of the world's platinum. But, in January 2015, gold production reached a new monthly low, generating 87% less than it did in January 1980, and South Africa is now the world's sixth ranked gold producer. Following on from the article in Materials World February 2015 (Asset 997) this article is the second half of a special focus on graphite. It looks at graphite's market prospects over the next few years. Natural graphite is used in refractories, which accounts for ca. 20% of global demand and is forecast to grow by 2-4%/a to 2020, while the largest growth in demand (increases of 10-15%/a) is estimated to come from its application in anodes for lithium-ion batteries, especially those in hybrid electric vehicles. High-grade natural graphite deposits that are either coming back on stream or are in the pipeline are discussed including Woxna mine in Sweden, Bissett Creek project in Ontario, Canada, Balama mine in Mozambique and Lac Knife project in Quebec, Canada

In coal-fired power stations coal is ground to a fine powder and then transported pneumatically at 25-30 m/s velocity to remote burners. Wear of the conveying pipework is a well recognised problem and traditional lining materials are Nihard and basalt. In many cases these are being replaced by alumina tiles in order to improve life and reduce the frequency of replacement. A programme of laboratory testing of candidate aluminas with AIO, contents between 85% and 99-5% has been undertaken and the results compared with field experience. This gives confidence in the erosion tests, which were designed to replicate most of the field conditions. However, it has not proved possible to draw correlations between the laboratory erosion rates and any of the materials’ bulk properties. SEM, TEM and microanalysis studies have therefore been made in order to look for microstructural aspects that could be influencing erosion rates and it has been shown that intercrystalline cohesion, the matrix phase and porosity appear to have most influence on wear performance. It is necessary to quantify these microstructural parameters if reliable erosion performance is to be obtained. Paper presented at the conference Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in Exeter, 23-24 March 1994. A risk-based decision-making procedure has been developed for selecting rockburst-resistant tunnel support in burst-prone mines. The method is based on a risk-cost-benefit analysis and uses support cost data, costs associated with the risk of support failure or excavation loss, costs associated with accidents, injuries and deaths, and the benefits achieved by installing rockburst-resistant support. It takes into account the risk of damage to the support systems due to rockbursts, potential loss of production and the need to rehabilitate in the event of a damaging rockburst. A practical example is provided to illustrate the principles involved in the decision process

During the production of the Geochemical Atlas of Finland till samples were collected throughout Finland at a density of one sample per 300 km2. The material studied was the fine fraction of till (less than 0.06 mm). The geochemical mapping has shown that elements that are locally enriched in bedrock in the form of ore mineralisation are also enriched in a wide area of the surrounding till. These anomalous enrichments of ore elements take the form of rectangular or curvilinear zones that are some tens of kilometres wide and hundreds of kilometres long. The mineralised zones host ore deposits of different genetic types and can be termed "ore provinces". They stand out prominently on the geochemical maps and can be divided into sub-units of different chemical composition.

Induced polarisation (IP) surveys are commonly used in uranium exploration programmes in India. The IP method is effective in detecting the disseminated metallic sulphides that are often associated with uranium minerals. However, conductive and polarisable host rock or overburden often introduces inductive or electromagnetic (EM) coupling into time domain IP measurements. This makes it difficult to distinguish between responses due to such coupling and those that might indicate economic mineralisation. Attempts must be made to remove the EM effects before the IP technique is used in drilling programmes. Transient decay curves which were recorded during field surveys at Pisnari were factorised using the Marquardt algorithm. Dispersion plots of the amplitudes and relaxation times of the composite exponential function enable a clear distinction to be made between the effects of EM coupling and those of mineralisation.

The leaching, with hydrochloric, sulphuric and perchloric acids, of suspensions and massive specimens of different haematite and goethite samples has been studied. Both accelerating and constant types of leaching curves have been observed. It is concluded that the grain to particle size ratio of the oxide being leached determines which type of leaching curve is obtained, particles containing a large number of individual grains producing the accelerating type of curve

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. A model is presented which regards the Lower Talnakh- and Talnakh-type intrusions as part of the plumbing system for the overlying lavas. As magma ascended along the Noril'sk-Kharayelakh fault it was forced to spread out within sedimentary strata immediately beneath the obstruction of the accumulated volcanic sequence. Here it was severely depleted in chalcophile elements by sulphides, which were then trapped by their high density and remained behind in the main arteries to form the central, elongated zone of maximum thickness. Subsequent magma also lost Ni, Cu and PGE to the sulphides as it flowed through. The Lower Talnakh-type intrusions represent part of the plumbing system that became blocked at an early stage, before the influx of much mokulaevsky-type magma rich in chalcophile elements. The model accounts for the high metal content of the ores in comparison with the size of their associated intrusions, the extensive metamorphic aureoles, the chalcophile depletion of some overlying volcanic suites, the presence of the ore in near-surface intrusions rather than deep magma chambers, and the sulphur isotopic composition of the ore

Cemented fill was first introduced at the Keretti mine in 1952, but entailed high cement costs, the need for stope preparation, slimes handling, clean-up and maintenance, increased mine dewatering, segregation of fill and long setting times. In the 1970s research began into the use of iron blast-furnace slag as a binding agent and by 1989 Pyhasalmi, Vihanti, Keretti, Vammala and Enonkoski had saved US $11 000 000 by using slag binders instead of cement. Viscaria in Sweden and Tara in Ireland also use slag as 90-100% of total binder, although their backfilling methods vary. The main area of interest in slag research is determining the activation methods for initiating the binding reactions; it is also important to achieve other characteristics such as resistance to corrosion by sulphuric ion. New backfilling techniques developed during the 1980s included the use of high-density cemented tailings fill at Vammala and porous cemented rockfill at Enonkoski and Viscaria. Future developments focus on concepts such as integration of mining and milling with backfilling and the achievement of total underground disposal of wastes

The mining industry depends to a large extent on the availability of high performance equipment. For drilling this means a requirement for well engineered, reliable machines with mechanised handling and widespread utilisation of automatic control. Such machines enable performance optimisation of drilling operations and integration into a high productivity mining system. A review is presented of the current status of drilling technology as applied to the mining and minerals industry. This covers developments in: drill bit materials and design; drilling techniques; machine design; mechanisation; automation; and drilling control. It also covers the ways in which current and future mining methods and practices will influence the applications and demands placed on drilling activities. The probable impact of current research on the industry is discussed.

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994 (originally entitled: The Broken Hill base metal deposit - a tectonically transported and modified basinal deposit within the Proterozoic Willyama fold and thrust belt). A regional structural study was undertaken which incorporated the role of shears. Their positions were identified from earlier mapping, from regional aeromagnetic data and by additional field work. Kinematic studies determined movement histories and petrological studies of the fault rocks formed within the shears identified the relationship between the movements and regional metamorphism. It was found that the shears formed a part of an earlier, major thrust event with transport from NW to SE and a later, minor one in the reverse direction. Neither had any significant effect on the mineralisation apart from local displacement, but the shuffling of the basin stratigraphy adds to the difficulty of recognising the original volcanic and sedimentary protoliths of the metamorphosed sequence. The mineralisation at Broken Hill mine is confined to a single recognisable thrust slice within a shear corridor. It is stratabound with locally transgressive remobilisation due to the high-temperature thrusting and some metasomatic alteration as a result of the retrograde shearing. This variation accounts for the different genetic models applied to the deposits in the past

Hosting copper, gold, oil and liquefied natural gas, the country is an interesting target for miners. However, remote locations in inhospitable, unusual and difficult terrain cause problems. The government has worked to create a Sovereign Wealth Fund to manage government surpluses from minerals and energy but PNG scores very low among many criteria, including land dispute resolution, as revealed by the 2014 Canadian Fraser Institute in its survey of senior mining personnel.
