"Nanisivik Mines Ltd. operates a 10-M W diesel-electric generating plant at its zinc-lead operation on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. This paper provides a description of the plant and the integrated waste heat recovery system. Data is presented detailing the actual costs of operating a plant over a period of seven years. Problems in operation are described as well as the success of the plant in meeting its objectives over the years. IntroductionNanisivik is located on the shore of Strathcona Sound at the north end of Baffin Island (Fig. I). Nanisivik Mines Ltd. has operated a 2,100 tonne per day zinc-lead underground mine and a concentrator, together with supporting infrastructure, at this location since October 1976. Annual production of 100 000 tonnes of zinc and 10 000 tonnes of lead concentrate is transported by ship to Europe during the mid -July to mid October shipping season.All electrical needs of the project are provided by the company-owned and -operated power plant. Facilities served by this electrical system are the underground mining areas, the concentrator and industrial area, a townsite, airport, and shiploading dock complex."

"Quartz Hill is a large, low- to moderate-grade quartz vein stockwork porphyry molybdenum deposit, discovered in 1974 during a regional stream sediment geochemical reconnaissance survey of southeast Alaska conducted by United States Borax and Chemical Corporation. Mineralization is localized in the upper parts of an Upper Oligocene (30 Ma) composite quartz monzonite stock which is emplaced discordantly into older Cretaceous to Early Tertiary terrain of the Coast Range igneous metamorphic complex of the northwest North American Cordillera. Subsequent fault-controlled, complex multi-stage intrusion, concentrated in the core of the Quartz Hill stock, produced successive pulses of hydrothermal alteration and molybdenum mineralization at about 27 Ma. Overall, the deposit is tabular and flat-lying and well suited to open pit mining. The 0.05% MoS2 grade limit covers an area of approximately 1500 m by 2750 m and extends to a maximum depth of 520 m below surface. Details of grade distribution show two separate lobes of higher grade material within the larger low-grade deposit.A ten year program of exploration drilling, underground development, sampling and metallurgical testwork led to a 1983 feasibility study based on a resource of 1600 million tonnes grading 0.127% MoS2 at a 0.08% MoS2 cutoff The large size of the deposit and its homogeneous grade distribution, typically showing gradual outward decrease of grade, makes in pit grade selection practical at several cutoff levels. Cominco Ltd. now reports a Probable Resource of 210 million tonnes averaging 0.22% MoS2 with a further Possible Resource of 1100 million tonnes averaging 0.12% MoS:z. At low molybdenum metal prices which have persisted for 10 years since the molybdenum price spike of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Quartz Hill deposit is sub-economic."

"In 1993, trials of two innovative applications of liner support involving the replacement of bolts in the ground support system were undertaken at Inco mines. The first trial involved an evaluation of the effect of dynamic loading on mesh-reinforced boltless shotcrete in a sub-level cave mining area on 2400 level at Stobie Mine. The second trial involved an evaluation of the MIROC Mineguard spray-on liner as a replacement for bolts and screen support, or as a replacement for screen support alone, in a topsoil heading of a bulk, VRM (vertical retreat mining) stope on 3240 level at Lower Coleman Mine.In the Stobie Mine trial, an uppers retreat heading was supported using a two-pass system. First, shotcrete was applied 2 inches thick, followed by pinning of mesh screen to the back and walls. A second pass of another 2 inches of shotcrete was then performed. For recovery of the ore zone, a vertical slot was created using a Borepak blind boring machine. The uppers rings were blasted, one or two rings at a time, starting at the slot and retreating out of the heading. During blasting of the production rings, blast monitoring was used to record the ppvs (peak particle velocities). For a series of 5-ring blasts, the maximum ppvs were measured to be 0.4 m/s (16 in./s) with a maximum charge weight per delay of357 kg (800 Ib). Six 5-point convergence measurement stations were set up and after each blast the total rockmass convergence was measured using a tape extensometer. Although a maximum displacement of 100 mm (4 in.) was measured, the shotcrete still managed to provide some support junction. A support damage assessment was also done to try and relate blast vibration to effectiveness of the mesh reinforced shotcrete liner. This trial demonstrated the effect that blasting has, on a support system, and it also demonstrated the necessity of having the mesh reinforcement properly placed within the shotcrete."

A 300 m shaft provides access to the mine. In addition , exploitation sublevels are developed every 20 m and are linked by a service ramp. The overburden located on top of the deposit is 40 m thick and is composed of a very dense till.A detailed work plan was initiated to permit mining under the overburden. To do so, it was imperative that efficient methods be developed. At a time when an accident at the Belmoral Mine shook the mining world , it was a task to convince provincial authorities that it was safe.While B zone was being mined , development began in the A-2 zone deposit which has recently been put into production (Figs. 1 and 2).The intention of this paper is to provide an outline of the mining method s and their particular aspects. A simple, easily constructed apparatus suitable for the zone refining of iron and other reactive materials is described. After eight passes at one inch per hour, the iron produced showed a marked drop in hardness to 49 Brinell. In addition, an arbitrarily -defined recrystallization temperature was lowered by about 35°C and the rate of grain growth greatly increased. CERTAIN materials, of which iron is one, are so reactive that they cannot be zone refined in any known container without becoming contaminated. For such substances, the floating zone method ( 1) may be used. In this method, the specimen is supported vertically in an inert atmosphere and the molten zone supports itself by its own sur-face tension. The method was first applied to silicon (2) and has since been used for other reactive metals such as zirconium and titanium. "Abstract - Gamma-ray spectrometry, an effective tool in geological mapping, was used to define boundaries between various lithological formations in three adjacent areas of Central Syria, namely, the Syrian Desert, Ar Rassafeh Badiayat and the Northern Palmyrides mountains. This paper describes the role of an airborne gamma spectrometric survey which was orginally undertaken to assist uranium exploration. Interpretation of the total count data obtained through the survey has led to significant modifications and corrections to the previously published distribution map of the palaeogene phosphate rocks.Another important result of the survey is the discovery of four previously unknown phosphorite horizons in the Rasm Al-Aawabed area of the Northern Palmyrides. In addition, previously unknown phosphatic horizons are outlined in the other study areas. The importance of this technique as an effective prospecting method, not only for U but also for exploring for the economically important phosphorite formations in Syria, is emphasized. Furthermore, its role in geological mapping is stressed, especially in areas that lack sufficient geological data."

Buildings in the United States account for 72% of electricity consumption, 40% of energy consumption, 13% of water consumption, 39% of carbon footprint, and 30% of waste output. In order to minimize these negative environmental impacts, many public and private owners are requesting that their buildings be more sustainable and certified under the widely known programs such as leadership in energy and environmental design for existing buildings (LEED-EB). To accomplish this, buildings are increasingly integrating green building measures including energy efficient lighting, motion sensors, thermal pane glass, geothermal heat pumps, EnergyStar rated HVAC systems, photovoltaic systems, and wind turbines. This research paper presents the development of an automated decision support system (DSS) that is designed to optimize the selection of green building measures which can be used to upgrade existing buildings. The developed DSS incorporates two optimization models that are capable of (i) minimizing the total upgrade costs required to accomplish a specified LEED-EB certification level such as silver or gold; and (ii) maximizing the number of accredited LEED-EB points within a specified budget of upgrade costs. The DSS is designed to identify a set of optimal upgrade decisions that accomplishes these two optimization objectives. An application example is used to illustrate the capabilities of the DSS and to validate its result.

The operation of grinding mills in an ore processing circuit is supported by monitoring the input and output variables. These can include the feed ore size distributions, ore feed and water addition rates. The outputs can include the discharge undersize density, oversize tonnage rate and the P80 of the discharge. The grinding mill performance is judged by the power draw, recycle rates and discharge grind size. Conditions inside the mill are inferred from loads cells or bearing pressures and past histories. An overall noise value is sometimes used to evaluate the load as well as the occurrence of excessive impacting of steel balls onto the liners/lifters of the mill. This paper presents results of the internal behaviour of a mill using non-contact stationary microphones located close to the mill outer shell (Pax, 2012). The noise generated by a mill can be attributed to a number of events that occur inside these mills and suitably analysed can provide real-time determinations of in-mill behaviour and can provide powerful insights into the operation of the primary comminution tumbling mills. The acoustically determined signals including a specific 'steel' signal, water hold-up, integrated area together with a classification of impact events. Specific results from case studies will show information of the trajectories inside a mill, steel to rock ratio as well as rheology effects. By incorporating a self-consistent understanding methodology for the in-mill processes from an array of microphones, the information can be used to diagnose the dynamic conditions inside a mill.

The choice of furnace design parameters has a marked effect on the integrity of the furnace that is constructed. The design methodology for DC arc furnaces typically begins with the chemical reactions and feed materials that define the process. The specific energy requirement of the process, and the feedrates of the raw materials largely determine the power requirement for the furnace. A chosen value for the 'power intensity' sets the diameter of the furnace. Justification is provided for why this is a good choice of scale-up parameter. Equations are presented to quantify the resulting trade-off between thermal efficiency and the degree of error that can be tolerated in the balance between power and feedrate. This improved understanding should provide a better rationale for selecting an appropriate power intensity (or furnace diameter) for future furnaces.

"Selective separations of metals and ions in mineral extraction and refining are becoming more challenging as ore bodies become more complex and environmental pressures increase. The separation and containment of mercury produced in gold mining are a factor in the profitability and operability of mines. This paper will discuss the development and implementation of the Johnson Matthey HgFree selective mercury removal process. The process is designed to selectively recover co-leached mercury from either heap leach pregnant solutions at ambient temperature and low mercury concentrations, or electrowinning pregnant solutions at elevated temperature and high mercury concentration, without affecting gold or silver recovery. The process utilizes a highly selective adsorption-desorption step in which mercury is removed quantitatively by the HgFree adsorbent without adsorption of gold, silver or other metals present. Development of the original HgFree adsorbent has resulted in a process whereby mercury can be recovered as an inert salt and is never present as the free metal. The HgFree adsorbent can be regenerated and recycled in situ, and is capable of being reused multiple times. The overall process is compatible with existing gold mining and recovery practices and offers significant environmental and sustainability benefits, including reduction or elimination of the need to retort mercury with a subsequent reduction in potential mercury air emissions. Development of the HgFree adsorbent and process will be discussed along with a pilot operation at two operating mines.INTRODUCTIONMany gold ore bodies contain high concentrations of mercury which when extracted with cyanide, co-extract with the gold and other metals. This mercury is carried through the process with the gold, posing environmental and technical issues when it is separated from the doré. This paper describes a method to selectively adsorb mercury from the gold recovery circuit while it is in a soluble form, leaving gold to be processed as normal. The removal of mercury from the circuit eliminates the need for mercury retorting of doré and so reduces the potential environmental impact of fugitive emissions of elemental mercury."

The use of water flowing as a lower layer to reduce pressure gradients in petroleum pipelines was investigated using 17.5 deg. A.P.I. Lloydminster crude oil in a 1-inch laboratory pipe-line and a 21h-inch field pipeline. The method was found to be very effective in reducing the pressure gradient below that for the oil flowing alone. The factor by which the pres-sure gradient was reduced varied with the percentage of water added, and in general exceeded 10 for water contents ranging from 40 to 60 per cent. Within this range of water content the pressure gradient reduction factor was independent of the oil flow rate.

"Hydraulic drills, recently implemented at the Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada, Limited, Bernie Lake Mine, are proving to be an economic alternative to pneumatic drilling systems. The paper describes the application of an electric-hydraulic drill jumbo to the mechanized room-and-pillar mine and its performance. The application of these drills resulted in improved environmental and working conditions.Drill rods and bits are a major cost centre in hard-rock mining applications. The paper also discusses the performance of one manufacturer's product used on the hydraulic drills.IntroductionThe Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada, Limited (TANCO) started producing tantalum ore from its Bernie Lake pegmatite in 1969. The pegmatite, encased in amphibolite, is shallow seated and flat lying. It is defined by diamond drilling along 4,000 feet of strike and 1,500 feet down dip, ranging in thickness from 60 to 280 feet. Relatively well defined zones of mineralization occur within the pegmatite and form separate orebodies of tantalum, lithium and cesium."

"Placer Dome Inc. is the operator of the Musselwhite project located 100km north of Pickle Lake, Ontario. J.S. Redpath Limited was contracted to conduct an underground exploration program using shaft access.During the winter of1988, the shaft collar was established in 16 metres of water bearing sand and till overburden. This paper will illustrates the engineering techniques used to overcome the obstacles to installing a shaft collar in deep overburden. Specialized dewatering and piling procedures were employed.INTRODUCTIONHarold and Allan Musselwhite discovered gold in the Opapimiskan Lake area, north of Pickle Lake, in 1962. The prospectors were grubstaked by ten companies in 1973.A diamond drill program was initiated shortly thereafter.In 1983an underground ramp exploration program was carried out on the West Anticline portion of the property. The program was unsuccessful in establishing an ore reserve so surface exploration continued. In 1986the ""T"" zone was discovered. Further surface drilling was done and an over-all drill-indicated reserve of 6 million tonnes at 7 grams per tonne was outlined. The gold mineralization occurs in several vertical tabular deposits within the iron formation. "Talc ore from Bakertalc, High water, Quebec analyzing about 60% talc, previously dry ground to about 95% minus 53 µm was beneficiated in an 11.4 kg/ h pilot-plant flotation circuit. A concentrate of 95.9% talc (necessary for paper-grade) was obtained at a recovery at 75.3% by employing 53 g/t of Dowfroth 250 collector at pH 9.2; further cleaning increased the grade to 97.2% talc at a recovery of 57.5%.Flotation of fresh ground 60% minus 44 µm ore at a feed rate of 18.6 kg/ h produced a grade of 96.4% talc with a recovery of 78.2%, using Aerofroth 70 collector a six carbon-branch chain alcohol, at pH 9.2.The similarity in the concentrate grade and recovery between pre-ground and fresh-ground ore indicated that it was not neces¬sary to grind to 95% minus 53/2m to achieve comparable selectivity. A grind of 60% minus 44 pm corresponds to 100% minus 300 µm.Flotation retention times obtained with fresh ground ore indicate 33 min. for combined rougher/scavenger, and 15 min. each for the first and second cleaners.Talc-magnesite flotation separation is explained in terms of physico-chemical forces, with reference to surface charge and adsorption mechanisms."

If the equilibrium is examined from the point of view of the phase rule, it is a three-component system, and if it exists in two phases (liquid and gas) it will have three degrees of freedom. "The planning and design of mining panels in the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc., Lanigan Division mine Block B involved a number of investigative techniques. The techniques utilized to gain insight into the viability of mining included2-D and 3-D seismic surveys, longhole drilling, exploration wells, photo lineament, magnetic and gravity surveys, and actual room excavation.IntroductionPotash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PCS) owns and operates four potash mines in the province of Saskatchewan. The Lanigan Division mine is located 110 Ian east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, near the town of Lanigan.The Lanigan Mine commenced production in August 1968under the ownership or Alwinsal Potash of Canada Limited. The mine was purchased by PCS in 1977.Lanigan Division's productive capacity is 3.4 million tonnes of product per year. Ore is extracted from the "" B"" zone or Layer III or the Patience Lake member of the Prairie Evaporite, more than 1000m below surface . The Patience Lake member (approximately 20 m thick) consists of potash interbedded with salt. The average run-of-mine ore grade is 21070 K20 (Fig. I).The mine was initially developed using the room-and-pillar technique. Improvements in mining resulted in the use or extensible conveyors in long panel rooms."

"Non-producing mineral properties include those at various stages of exploration, properties at the pre-feasibility or feasibility stage, properties with currently uneconomic mineral resources, and past-producers. The market approach is applicable to all these types of non-producing mineral properties. Income approach methods such as discounted cash flow and option pricing are generally not applicable to properties at the exploration stage, but may be applicable to non-producing mineral properties with defined mineral reserves or mineral resources.The value of a non-producing mineral property depends on its perceived potential for the existence and discovery of an economic mineral deposit. The potential, in turn, depends on a number of factors which must be considered when choosing market comparables. These comparability factors include such items as geology, mineralization, stage of exploration and results, mineral resources, location and geography, and political jurisdiction. The date of the market comparables must be within a reasonable time period of the valuation date of the subject property. Although it is difficult to find good market comparables because of the unique nature of mineral properties and the small number of transactions, these difficulties are compensated for by analyzing a number of transactions on similar properties to develop a range of values for the subject property.For valuation purposes, market comparables can be expressed in terms of total property value, value per unit area (e.g., $ per hectare), or value per unit of metal contained in mineral resources (e.g., $ per ounce of gold, or $ per pound of copper). The market comparable value can be used to estimate the value of the subject property by using the total property value, unit area value or contained metal value."
