Cansolv® S02 Scrubbing Technology was described in a paper in Copper/Cobre 03. Four years on, the technology is operating at a full scale production facility.Hindustan Zinc Limited expanded their capacity by installing the AUSMELT process. The process proceeds through smelting, slag reduction, slag cleaning and holding stages sequentially in the same vessel, resulting in widely varying off gas characteristics. The off gas is suitable for treatment is a conventional acid plant for a modest proportion of the day, but at other times produces off gas too high in S02 to be discharged to atmosphere. Cansolv® S02 Scrubbing Technology was identified as a means of effectively removing the S02 down to low levels from the off gas during all stages of the pyrometallurgical process. Furthermore, the Cansolv® S02 Scrubbing System Technology produces high purity S02 that allowed for the captured S02 to be directed to an existing acid plant, avoiding the capital cost of new acid making capacity.

"Precipitation-strengthening 6xxx alloys are widely used for building and construction and automobile industries due to their high strength, good weldability and corrosion resistance. However, their elevated-temperature properties (250–300°C) decrease rapidly due to the fast-coarsening of precipitates. On the other hand, dispersoid-hardening is one of the most efficient approaches to improve the elevated-temperature properties. Therefore, the evolution of dispersoids during heat treatment in Al-Mg-Si-Mn alloys was investigated in the present work. Various heat treatments with temperatures ranging from 300–500°Cfor up to 24 hours were performed. Electrical conductivity and microhardness were measured while optical and scanning electron microscopy combined with image analysis, were used to characterize the dispersoids. Special emphasis was placed on the evolution of the size and number density of the dispersoids under different heat treatment parameters. It was found that dispersoids started to precipitate at 350°Cfor 1 hour. Nucleation and growth were the main mechanisms at temperatures up to 400°Cwhile coarsening occurred at temperatures above 450°C. The quantitative results indicated that dispersoids precipitation reached the optimum condition after treatment at 400°Cfor 2–4 hours with a fine size and high number density, resulting in the highest hardness.INTRODUCTIONThe precipitation-hardening 6xxx aluminum alloys with major alloying elements of Mg and Si are one of the most widely used aluminum alloys for building and construction and automobile industries (Dinaharan & Murugan, 2012). In recent years, there have been increasing demands for aluminum structural components to be used at elevated temperatures (250–300°C) for different applications. However, the mechanical properties of 6xxx alloys at elevated temperature are typically reduced due to the rapid coarsening of precipitates at 250–300°C. It has been reported that the yield strength (YS) of AA6061 in the peak-aged condition drops from 276 MPa at room temperature to only 30 MPa at 315°C(Kaufman, 1999). Therefore, it is a key concern to improve the elevated-temperature properties of 6xxx alloys to expand their range of applications."

"In recent years, there has been rapid growth in the use of natural stone building and construct ion products. The largest growing markets are for pre-fabricated natural stone panels for interior and exterior wall facing and flooring. This increased demand is attributed to advanced quarrying and processing technologies, renewed appreciation for the aesthetic appeal of natural stone, and to the superior durability of natural stone when compared to glass, steel, and concrete. Geologically, plutonic rocks, and to a lesser extent marble and limestone/dolostone, are used extensively for these applications. This paper details the economic structure of the dimension stone industry, describes the necessary characteristics of a stone quarry, and outlines the geological criteria which favour an economic quarry.INTRODUCTIONThe world building stone industry has remained relatively stable over the last 5 to 6 years. In contrast, the North American stone industry has experienced substantial growth during that period. The increased use of commercial granite is primarily responsible for this growth, where use as exterior wall veneer for commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings represents the largest and fastest growing market.This increased usage in the construction industry has been sparked by the application of new technologies in quarrying, processing and installation , ma king natural stone more competitive with man-made materials which are energy intensive to produce, and have risen dramatically in price. The development of safer, time-saving stone installation techniques has also appealed to the liability-conscience construction industry. Finally, there is a trend by designers and architects toward utilizing long-la sting weather-resistant building materials, and a renewed appreciation of the aesthetic appeal of natural stone. The other large user of granite is the monument industry of North America which, although it has decreased slightly in recent years, still consumes approximately 40% of all commercial granite produced. The local use of commercial marble has remained relatively stable, and North America still relies heavily on European sources and suppliers. There has been some concern over the use of marble for exterior applications in areas subject to acid rain, and in colder climates where the marble ma y be vulnerable to freeze thaw cycles. Despite these concerns, the greatest problem is not with the structural breakdown of marble but the inability of some marbles to retain their polished finishes in the se environments. As a result, there has been an increase in the use of granite at the expense of marble for exterior applications. Finally, commercial marble is used extensively for interior flooring, wall s, counter tops, furniture, sculptures, and stairway components"

Mine drainage contains metals and sulfate, which may be toxic to aquatic life at certain concentrations and should be removed to acceptable levels before release of any drainage to the environment. One method for treating mine drainage is passive treatment, which is increasing in popularity due to lower construction and operating costs. This method is based on the activity of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) respiring on sulfate while using fermentation products from decomposing complex organic materials. The product of this biological process is hydrogen sulfide, which reacts with metals in mine drainage and precipitates them as metal sulfides. However, in practice passive treatment systems are not always effective, reducing the reliability of this approach. In this study, a mixture of hay, cow manure and wood chips was tested in continuous flow experiments for efficacy at sustainable treatment of sulfate and selenium containing water from a mine tailings pond. Factors that contributed to a decline in performance included lowering of the pH due to acids leaching out of the organics, re-oxidation of sulfide back to sulfate and a reduction in dissolved organic compounds over time. In this paper methods are described to overcome these problems so that treatment is made more reliable.

Many of the gold deposits in the Timmins• area show a close spatial association to ultramafic metavolcanics. Available analytical data suggest that ultramafic rocks contain significantly higher gold contents than other major rock types. In addition, recent analyses by Keays (1975) suggest that talc-carbonate alteration of ultramafic rocks releases significant quantities of gold. It is proposed that the ultramafic volcanics formed the principal source of gold for the deposits in Timmins, and that the gold was derived from the ultramafic flows when they were extensively carbonatized. Carbonatization of the ultramafic rocks and emplacement of the auriferous quartz-carbonate veins was probably coincident with the last major period of deformation in the gold camp. Delineation of hitherto unrecognized ultramafic volcanics could be an important guide to the discovery of further gold deposits.

THE Buchans ore bodies are located in central Newfoundland, three miles north of Red Indian lake. The townsite of Buchans was named after a Royal Navy Captain who, while attempting to make contact with the Beothuck Indians, camped in the area in 1820. Ore was first found at Buchans by a Mic Mac Indian, Matty Mitchell, who discovered one of the three small orebodies in the bed of the Buchans river. The Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company, which holds mineral rights in the area, developed the orebody, but was forced to give up the venture because of difficulties encountered in separating the various sulphides. The American Smelting and Re-fining Company developed a flotation process which was capable of economically separating and concentrating the various sulphides, and, in 1926, they took a long-term lease on the property.

"Complex research of flotation concentrates of monomineral fractions of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrite, pyrrhotite included methods of adsorption of collectors, surface compounds by IR ATR, and surface films of flotoreagents by TEM. They revealed that the proportion of the parts of thionocarbamate (TC) and dithiophosphate had an effect on the adsorption rate of the components of minerals, on the presence of characteristic bands, and, what is an important, visualized surface film of organic flotation reagents on the particles of concentrates by TEM. The predominance of thionocarbamate in a composition selectively increases the adsorption rate constant of the components and recovery of chalcopyrite compared with sphalerite and galena. The highest flotation rate using TC is characteristic for chalcopyrite (0.62 min- 1) in case of individual use, and it's in combination with butyl xanthate (25% butyl xanthate or 3:1) 0.89 min-1 too. We studied the ternary blend - dithiophosphate: thionocarbamates: butyl xanthate. The increase of the proportion of butyl xanthate in combination reduces the contrast of the flotation rate among all sulfides.Practice flotation of refractory sulfide copper-zinc ores of the Urals (content sulfide iron - 75- 95%) confirmed that the use of a combination of selective collectors increases selective recovery of copper sulfide minerals up to 50% at the first fraction that is the conditioned copper concentrate. New selective sulfhydryl collectors resulted in high levels of recovery of copper into a concentrate - more than 90% - against 70-72% (butyl xanthate) from copper-pyrite ore. Low floatability of iron sulfides has been obtained by selective sulfhydryl collectors. Using weak selective sulfhydryl collectors can reduce pH into collective or selective flotation from pH 10-10.5 to pH = 7.2-7.5, which improves the quality of individual concentrates of nonferrous metals and their recovery. The same is true for polymetalic sulfide ore. The volume of gold recovery also increased."

The paper industry in the Pacific Northwest is a potentially large market for industrial clays. Current trends within the paper industry towards higher quality newsprint, filled and coated papers, offers an incentive for exploration in the region since the current supply of kaolin is mainly from Georgia in the southeastern U.S. Freight rates commonly exceed US$100 per tonne. The kaolin resources of the Pacific Northwest require expensive processing technologies to meet the industry specifications and it is doubtful that any large development of the local resources can be supported at the present time. Competition from high-quality regional resources of carbonates is another factor weighing against the development of local kaolin resources while there is a potential threat from shipments ofAsian and Brazilian kaolin in the early part of the 21st century.

"Trends in world coal markets indicate that the next twenty years could be a period of intensive development for British Columbia's coal resource. This paper examines demand projections for metallurgical, thermal and chemical feedstock coals, with particular reference to domestic and Pacific Rim markets. Supply possibilities, from the point of view of British Columbia's competitive position, are explored, with emphasis on the interaction of such factors as capital, labour, port and transportation requirements.The paper concludes with an examination of British Columbia's strategies in light of the foregoing, and comments on the government's role in ensuring that development of the coal resource be attained in a manner consistent with over-all provincial goals and objectives.IntroductionFor the purposes of this paper the Pacific Rim is defined as including, in addition to Canada, the following: Japan, Korea, the People 's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the countries of the Indonesian Archipelago, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific-bordering countries of South America and Mexico. The United States has been excluded in this definition in order to better illustrate the economic growth potential for British Columbia coal in the Pacific Rim economies.In the past decade, the Pacific Rim economies have grown faster than most other economies in the rest of the world; economic growth rates of 10 per cent were common in the region prior to the 1974 slowdown and the average rate of economic expansion in the mid-1970s has exceeded 6 per cent. Rapid expansion of international trade in the region has been a major stimulus in this process. By 1979, Pacific Rim two-way trade has reached an estimated $550 billion-about 20 per cent of world trade."

Oil and .gas reservoirs exist under pressure within the pore spaces of rock structures or traps. Wells are drilled to produce these reservoirs. Under primary operation, the natural energy of expanding fluids in and adjacent to the reservoir forces or drives oil and gas to the wells. There are three basic sources of energy: dissolved gas, water, and gas cap. Typical recovery by primary methods is only 10 to 25 per cent of the oil in place for the dissolved gas drive but is generally higher for the others. Secondary recovery involves the injection of water or gas to supplement natural energy, thereby increasing recovery over that obtainable by primary operation alone. In many cases ultimate recovery with secondary methods is 1.2 to 2.0 times the expected primary recovery. The type programme adaptable in a field depends on its 'primary performance and on certain reservoir characteristics. In the United States, application of secondary recovery methods is becoming increasingly important. About 22 per cent of United States oil production now comes from fields in which injection projects are operating. In 1953, nearly 1.4 million barrels of oil daily came from such fields, more than double the amount in the early 40's. Ultimate primary recovery from known pools is estimated at roughly 73 billion barrels. Secondary recovery projects already in operation will increase this to almost 80 billion, an increase of almost 10 per cent. Unitized secondary recovery projects have been very successful. From unitized projects alone, industry reserves of oil in the United States have been increased by 3 1/2 billion barrels. In Canada, secondary recovery has not been so wide spread mainly because D-3 reef reservoirs which have held the major reserves are under water drive. However, appreciable amounts of water are being injected in the Redwater D-3, Leduc D-2 and Joarcum Viking reservoirs, and gas in the Golden Spike D-3. In both countries, possible achievements in increased recovery through secondary recovery methods now in use and by new ones which may be developed through research and field trial are a challenge to the scientist and the industry.

"This paper compares Canadian provincial mining safety regulations regarding the use and testing of cage safety catches, including a brief history and evolution. Regulations are similar across provinces, with only slight variations. Currently, the “Ontario-type” safety dog is the most commonly used safety catch in Canada. Performance estimation of the compensation mechanism for different safety-dog shapes and tooth angles show this shape works well and has consistent braking results, but the best efficiency is obtained for initial tooth angles greater than 10°. Miner safety is questionable for lightly loaded cages, an issue that should be addressed technically and legislatively.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article compare les diverses réglementations de sécurité minière concernant les parachutes des cages dans les provinces canadiennes ainsi que les essais qu’ils doivent subir. Il semble que les réglementations soient semblables à travers les provinces avec quelques légères différences ou divergences. Un bref historique des parachutes et de leur évolution est présenté. De nos jours, le parachute de « type Ontario » est le plus fréquemment employé à travers le Canada et il présente des résultats de freinage uniformes. Une estimation de la performance du mécanisme de compensation pour les diverses formes de taquets de sécurité et les divers angles des dents montre que cette géométrie fonctionne bien; cependant, la meilleure efficacité est obtenue pour des angles de dents supérieurs à 10°. "Hydrochloric acid (HCl), although more expensive than sulfuric, find uses as a leaching agent in reactions involving iron oxide. The reason for this substitution was the discovery that oxyhydrolysis of ferrous chloride by which HCl can be recycled economically. This avoided the pollution of the environment by ferrous sulfate. It was found further that the rate of leaching of sulfides is faster when HCl is used as compared with sulfuric apparently due to the formation of aqueous chlorine. In case of refractory gold ores, HCl leaching under pressure avoids the use of cyanide solution since gold chloride is produced which can be recovered by standard methods. Hydrochloric acid find also uses in the leaching of scheelite and apatite but its use in leaching clay and anorthosite is questionable.INTRODUCTION Sulfuric acid is the cheapest acid and is used as a leaching agent in many hydrometallurgical processes. However, hydrochloric acid (HCl), although more expensive since it is prepared by reaction of sulfuric with sodium chloride, has replaced sulfuric acid in many reactions involving iron oxide. It replaced sulfuric acid for the first time in 1960s in pickling of steel because of pollution problems (Habashi, 2000). Ferrous chloride produced in pickling can be economically decomposed to ferric oxide and HCl according to:2FeCl2 + 2H2O + 1/2O2 ? Fe2O3 + 4HCl (1)which also shows that the acid can be regenerated but ferrous sulfate cannot be economically decomposed to recover sulfuric acid for recycle. Since then, HCl has been used in many leaching processes. Hydrochloric acid is a corrosive acid and is usually handled in rubber-lined equipment. REGENERATION OF HYDROCHLORIC ACID Regeneration of HCl is conducted in fluidized bed or in spray roaster Fluidized bed oxyhydrolysis In a fluidized bed, ferrous chloride solution is introduced onto a bed of hot ferric oxide where heating is provided by the hot fluidizing combustion gases (Figure 1). The solution is fed on top of the bed of oxides. The liquid feed wets the outer layer of the hot oxide particles and is quickly evaporated to form a layer of new solid oxide on top of the existing oxide, thereby producing dense homogeneous particles."

This paper is intended to call attention to the manifold uses of limestone in industry; to indicate the types of limestone desired by some of the large consuming industries; and to give some information on the resources of limestone in Canada, so that an idea may be obtained of the present and future possibilities for limestone production. The word limestone is used in the usual broad sense to include both high-calcium limestone and the highly magnesian variety known as dolomite, as well as all intermediate types. Lime is simply calcined limestone, and in this general paper its uses have been included with those of raw limestone. It is of interest, in dealing with this subject, to glance back over the early history of the utilization of limestone, for by so doing we see that limestone has been of importance to mankind since the beginning of civilization and has contributed in no small measure to the development of a number of the arts and sciences. One of the first uses, if not the first use, of limestone was in connection with the making of lime for plastering purposes. This use antedates civilization. In the day of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the art of plastering had been brought to a state of perfection that is not nearly approached by the modern artisan.

The search for minerals in the future will be dominated by deeper exploration and the need to accurately target ?blind? deposits as more and more of the ?easy? near surface targets are exhausted. In this context, key technologies are emerging for deep exploration both in grassroots and minesite exploration, including the Titan 24 Deep Penetrating geophysical technology. Introduced in 2001, this technology has grown rapidly into an accepted approach for exploration in a variety of geologic environments, including brownfield environments where discovering additional reserves would most quickly benefit companies. Titan 24 belongs to a new class of sophisticated Distributed Acquisition Systems (DAS) which record high-volume, high-quality data simultaneously at multiple receiver stations. This data is then processed digitally, modeled using specialized inverse modeling software, and interpreted according to geologic and other parameters. The result is a robust, high-quality, high-volume data sets which provide a basis for improved imaging to depth. In this paper, the Titan 24 distributed technology is discussed. Illustrations of the vast improvement to overall exploration are showcased through results in several case studies. These include examples from two gold deposits, a porphyry deposit and a minesite. These examples show the range of applicability of the technology and the ability to effectively image mineralization, lithology, structure and alteration to depth as an aid to understanding prospective mineral deposits and targeting drills more accurately.

"Detection of outliers is an important primary step in geomodelling. Geological datasets often contain errors due to problems such as measurement device limitations and recording glitches. In this paper, a robust Mahalanobis distance–based approach is successfully applied to particle size distributions of the Joslyn lease, an oil sands development site near Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Automatic outlier detection and geological review were combined. Outliers from the Mahalanobis distance approach were compared with their respective core photographs to determine if laboratory measurements and facies classification were correct. A checking procedure for laboratory technicians is proposed.RÉSUMÉ La détection des valeurs aberrantes constitue une étape primaire importante de la modélisation géologique. Les ensembles de données géologiques contiennent souvent des erreurs en raison de problèmes tels que les limitations des instruments de mesure et des pépins d’enregistrement. Dans le présent article, une méthode robuste basée sur la distance de Mahalanobis a été mise en oeuvre avec succès aux granulométries du bail minier Joslyn, un site de sables bitumineux en développement à proximité de Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. La détection automatique des valeurs aberrantes a été combinée à une étude géologique. Les valeurs aberrantes de la méthode de la distance de Manalanobis ont été comparées avec leurs photographies respectives de carottes de forage afin de déterminer si les mesures en laboratoire et la classification des faciès étaient correctes. "Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy Throughout the history of Nova Scotia, trends in the production and use of its coal resources have resulted in major impacts on the economy and society of the province. Current trends in coal demand locally, nationally and internationally are having and will have an increasing positive effect on Nova Scotia over the next twenty years-in terms of energy supply, job creation and general economic development. Coal for electrical generation is an immediate and key objective of Nova Scotia's energy plan; and, in the long term, coal-derived fuels will meet the province's needs for transportation fuels. Demand for metallurgical coal is also expected to increase, especially if the merchant coke plant currently under investigation becomes a reality.Meeting these coal supply and utilization objectives in the face of increasing environmental, social and economic constraints poses a tremendous technical challenge. Work has begun on projects to expand coal production capacity and to adapt new technologies for coal preparation and utilization to the specific needs of Nova Scotia; much more work will be required in the coming decade in order to succesfully tap this resource.IntroductionThe energy problem facing Atlantic Canada has a few unique features not found in the rest of the country. Canada, as a whole, has access to a diverse mix of energy resources, including crude oil, natural gas, coal, hydro and uranium, with the result that crude oil supplies only about 40 per cent of Canada's primary demand. In contrast, foreign crude oil dominates Atlantic Canada's energy mix, supplying over 70 per cent of the primary energy demand.This results in important differences in various sectors. Nationally, about 5 per cent of the electricity is generated from oil whereas last year in Nova Scotia approximately 40 per cent of the electricity generated was from imported oil. Residential, commercial and industrial space heating, and industrial process heating in Atlantic Canada was almost 100 percent dependent on foreign oil. This is in sharp contrast to the situation in central and western Canada, which have access to secure domestic natural gas, oil and hydro electricity."

Unfortunately for that important sector of Canada's mining industry which is involved in mining the country's vast tar sands reserves, either now or in the future, the National Energy Program that was introduced along with the budget 'has serious implications."

"A hydrocyclic system used for mineral separation at the laboratory scale results in the separation of more than 90% of micas. The system functions only by water and might offer advantages where other methods of mica separation are not available. INTRODUCTIONVarious methods for the separation of micas, wollastonite, and garnet, e.g., screening, flotation, magnetic separation, and heavy liquids, are well known (e.g., Spence, 1929; Bates,I960; Gillson et al., 1960; Benjamin, 1971; Connor and Kolhnar, 1991; Collings and Andrews, 1991). However, where these methods are not available, the separation of micas by a hydrocyclic system developed by Sarafi and Aftabi (1991) may prove to be economic. This note is a brief description of the hydrocyclic system. Minerals and MethodFor testing the recovery of mica and other minerals from different rocks (garnet-mica schist, skarn, and pegmatite), standard minerals were tested first, and then rock samples. Pure mineral standards were prepared from coarse-grained samples of pegmatite, mica schist and skarn; the grain size of the minerals separated was more than I cm. The Hydrocyclic System and Mineral SeparationThe hydrocyclic system is shown schematically in Figure 1. In the first step in mineral separation, mineral and rock samples were crushed, milled, and then sieved to minus 250 plus 125 microns. Approximately 10 gm to 25 gm of the sample were inserted in decanter Dt • The motor pwnps, M1 and M2, were then turned on and the water valve rl was opened. At this time, water was flowing turbulently (30 em3/sec. to 50 em3/sec.) and minerals were separated according to their crystallographic nature, density and!or habit. The fInal separation was done by exit valves r2, r3 and r4, while the motor pwnps were still operating. After each experiment, the rt , r2' r3 and r4 valves were closed and the motor pumps were turned off. Following this, minerals in each decanter and the mter were collected, dried and weighed. "Newmont’s Mike prospect, currently undeveloped, is a blind Cu-Au(-Zn) deposit on the Carlin Trend, containing >8.5 M oz. Au, 1027 M lbs. Cu, and 809 M lbs. Zn as Carlin-type gold and polymetallic Cu-Zn minerals in Paleozoic lower-plate carbonates and shales. This project was undertaken 1) to examine the effectiveness of different lixiviants for leaching the Mike supergene Cu-Au ores via bottle roll tests, and 2) to determine what ore minerals resist dissolution in each leaching agent by comparing the mineralogy and chemistry of head and tail samples. Sulfuric and sulfurous acids were used to leach copper and cyanide was used to leach gold. Thiourea, glycine, and other lixiviants were used to leach both base metals and precious metal. QEMSCAN and SEM study of six samples of different ore types and grades indicate that the Au occurs as varieties of native gold, including auricupride and electrum. Major Cu minerals are native Cu, cuprite, malachite, chrysocolla, and conichalcite (Ca-Cu arsenate), with locally significant Cu in jarosite and goethite. Gangue mineralogy is dominated by quartz, sericite, chlorite, alunite, smectite and kaolinite, K-feldspar, and iron oxides (sensu lato). Results of bottle roll tests and leach residue mineralogy will be presented and discussed at the conference.INTRODUCTION Resource and Geologic Setting The Mike deposit is a large, blind Cu-Au(-Zn) deposit in the Maggie Creek district of the Carlin Trend of Nevada, USA, near the Gold Quarry mine (Figure 1). Zn at average grades of 0.72 g/t Au, 0.34 wt% Cu, and 2.13 wt% Zn (inventory for a cone at $400/oz Au and $0.80/lb Cu by Norby and Orobona, 2002)."
