In this paper, a neurofuzzy model is proposed for the development of an explanatory model of an industrial gold leach circuit based on historic plant data. A regression tree was used to partition the data in the predictor variable space and the structure of the tree was used as a basis for the derivation of fuzzy rules that could be integrated into a fuzzy expert system useful for operator decision support or process control. The position and shape of the membership functions were optimised with a backpropagation algorithm in a neural network framework. The approach yielded a significantly better explanatory model of the gold losses in the plant than comparable linear models. Although a regression tree could perform somewhat better in accounting for the variance of the dissolved gold losses, the tree was less robust than the fuzzy model.

Renison Limited operates an underground tin mine employing both cut and fill and open stope methods, at Renison Bell on the west coast of Tasmania. Mining in the region commenced in the 1890's. Development of the current mining operation commenced in 1965. The ventilation system used at Renison in its present configuration is a function of current mining methods, orebody characteristics and prevailing Tasmanian Department of Mines Inspection Regulations.

SLon magnetic separators utilise the combined force fields of magnetism, pulsating fluid and gravity to continuously beneficiate fine weakly magnetic minerals. They possess the advantages of high efficiency, low operative cost and high reliability. Until now there were about 600 SLon magnetic separators widely applied in processing oxidised iron ores, ilmenite, manganese ore and many other minerals. In this paper, several typical oxidised iron processing flow sheets with SLon magnetic separators are introduced.

The growth of the mining industry around Australia over the last ten years has seen many open cut mines developed on shallow oxide reserves. Most of these have been gold operations, although there are some copper mines in the list, too. Many of these have exhausted their oxide reserves and have made the transition to underground mining to access their deeper sulphide ores. Other operations have reached or are approaching the point where the decision has to be made to go underground or cease mining. This paper discusses the issues involved in making the transition from surface to underground mining. The aim is not to discuss each of the issues exhaustively. This would take a conference in its own right. Nor is it intended to provide a primer on underground mining. Instead the aim is, firstly, to flag the issues which must be addressed when planning to make the transition from surface to underground mining and, secondly, to identify critical aspects of mine development.

Geologists employed by Metals Exploration Pty. Ltd. discovered nickel enrichment at Greenvale, 180 kilometres West of Townsville, in 1967. Subsequent drilling proved an ore body containing 45 million dry tonnes of ore containing an average of 1.5% nickel and 0.11% cobalt. The Freeport Minerals Company, who had experience in treating lateritic nickel ore, were invited to participate in development of the ore body. This resulted in the formation of the operating company Queensland Nickel Pty. Ltd., jointly owned by Freeport Queensland Nickel Inc. and Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. With the completion of successful pilot plant testing of Greenvale ore at the Freeport research facilities at Belle Chasse, Louisiana, a treatment plant was constructed at Yabulu, 24 kilometres North West of Townsville. A 225 kilometre railway line was built connecting the Greenvale Mine and Yabulu Treatment Plant. The ore reduction and ammonia/ammonium carbonate leaching flowsheet is similar to that constructed and operated by the Freeport Minerals Company during World War II at Nicaro, Cuba. Modifications to the Nicaro flowsheet implemented at Yabulu include facilities to recover cobalt in a mixed nickel/cobalt sulphide product and the reduction of nickel

Roadheader tunnelling machines have been used in Australia by both mining companies and contractors involved in the mining and con- struction industries since the early 1970's. They have both advantages and limitations, and this paper discusses machine excavation from the point of view of a contractor who has both reaped the benefits and suffered the conse- quences of using roadheaders. The paper also includes brief descriptions of three projects tackled by roadheader, all the projects being Declines.

What is the best method of splitting a sample from a reverse circulation drill rig? How important is it to obtain a correctly split sample? What is the impact of an incorrectly split sample? These are just a few of many questions asked daily in the mining industry with regard to sampling. Modern sampling theory is well described in the literature in texts and is taught in short courses throughout the world, however little has been published on the relative performance of sample splitting devices used in the field. This paper compares the performance of the Jones tiered riffle splitter with a cone splitter manufactured by SGS Metal Craft in Western Australia. The testwork was carried out at AnglogoldÆs Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, 55 km south of Laverton in Western Australia. Mineralisation at Sunrise Dam is hosted in a structurally complex framework of shear zones with dips that range from steep (70¦) to shallow (25¦). The deposit is characterised by significant amounts of coarse gold, which presents a challenge in sampling, analysis and grade estimation. The three major areas where sampling errors can occur are in drilling, sampling, sample preparation and analysis. Sampling errors attributable to drilling and sample preparation often far outweigh the errors made at other stages in the process, however historically most effort to identify sampling errors has concentrated on the laboratory and analytical procedures. Splitter design and cleanliness can have a large impact on sample collection and preparation. Splitter performance was tested with respect to sample weights, particle size distribution, and gold grade consistency. The aim was to determine if each particle has an equal probability of being sampled, the resulting sample has integrity, and if any segregation problems occurred. The cone splitter was found to provide the best split in terms of particle size distribution, with no apparent size bias. Duplicate samples had more comparable masses than those provided by the riffle splitter. Most importantly, the cone splitter gave less grade variability between duplicate samples than the riffle splitter. Testwork also confirmed that, like the riffle splitter, the cone splitter must be oriented vertically and the design of the rig or cone splitter trailer should accommodate this requirement.

Drilling and blasting practices at Groote Eylandt are undergoing a period of rapid change. Practices over the last ten years are reviewed and some specific blasting problems currently being faced are described. A move from percussion to rotary drilling is outlined, together with the reasoning behind a proposed return to ANFO from watergel explosives. A brief outline of the various firing patterns used is given, together with a description of the drilling and blasting recording procedures currently in use. Current and planned developments in drilling and blasting at Groote Eylandt are also outlined, emphasizing the success of wide patterns, fired in line with long inter-row delays.

Results obtained from linear sweep voltammetry at a graphite anode in cryolite-alumina melts are presented, together with those obtained from a chronopotentiometric investigation of the influence of dissolved metal. The results, consistent with both production information and other fundamental studies, showed that the following two reactions occur at the anode.Equation 1Al (dissolved) ? The ability to simulate the stability of post-mining landscapes over time scales ranging from decades to millennia is a critical element in the assessment of closure designs for uranium mines. Landscape Evolution Modelling (LEM) technologies provide a means to simulate and assess the long-term geomorphic stability of a conceptual rehabilitated landform for periods of thousands of years. However, a major issue with simulations derived from long-term modelling are the limitations associated with the data inputs. Specifically, simulations which utilise historic rainfall data only represent the variability of rainfall events that have occurred over a relatively short period. Consequently, these simulations run the risk of not accounting for the full range of rainfall variability that might be expected over an extended period of up to 10 000 years. Therefore, for this study a probabilistic approach was adopted to generate a stochastic synthetic rainfall data set to produce a series of unique rainfall scenarios, each representing a simulated period of 100 years. Importantly, utilising such an approach allows uncertainty in predictions to be better accounted for and provides a range or probability of likely outcomes.In this study, the effect of ten individual rainfall scenarios are assessed in terms of their impact on the predicted erosion and denudations rates produced by the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM for a conceptual rehabilitated landform of the Ranger Uranium Mine (RUM) in the Northern Territory of Australia, focusing on the Corridor Creek catchment (Figure 1). While legislation requires this site to be erosionally stable for at least 10 000 years (Commonwealth of Australia, 1987), here the focus is on the first one hundred years of landscape evolution, as this is the period in which erosion is expected to be higher, with limited vegetation cover or pedogenic development in the initial decades after rehabilitation. Entropy is an important concept both in natural and social sciences.Considering the preparatory process of the earthquakes as an open system, in view of basic ideas of the Theory of the Dissipative Structure, the seis-mological Entropy is introduced as an order parame-ter, describing the scale of order associated with the earthquake distribution in time, space and mag-nitude. The features of evolution of seismic acti-vities before and after the large earthquakes have been studied by using the seismological entropy.The preliminary results show that the seismological entropy in certain region decreases as the large earthquake is approaching, it means that the distri-bution of earthquakes has turned gradually in order from disorder.It is expectation that the application of the Principle of Entropy in seismological research will deepen the understanding of the physical process of earthquake preparation. Meanwhile, it will also offer some enlightements in studying mitigation of seismic hazard as well as earthquake prediction.

Confidence in Yakabindie becoming a truly cost competitive nickel project has risen recently because of: ò the emergence of an economically effective contract mining climate; ò the delivery of cheaper energy via the Goldfields Gas Pipeline; and ò the development of the Yakabindie Process for production of nickel cathode and cobalt by-product directly from sulphide concentrates at site, dramatically cutting capital and operating costs compared to the conventional route. Development of the Yakabindie Process was a result of 'necessity being the mother of invention'. Yakabindie can now break out of the trap of relying on existing downstream processors to treat an intermediate, and instead the project can gain direct market access. The very attractive cost advantages demonstrate that hydrometallurgical processing of sulphide concentrates is a worthy prize. Improved cobalt recoveries, and tolerance of higher levels of magnesium and arsenic than allowable by smelters, are further advantages of this approach. Leach residues are combined with much larger quantities of naturally alkaline flotation tailings and remain at site. As a result the process is more environmentally sensitive than the conventional smelt/refine route, with no sulphur dioxide gas emissions and 'metal only out the gate'.

An extensive railway construction prog- ram in the People's Republic of China has required the excavation of many tunnels in difficult ground, particularly in mountainous regions. Conclusions drawn from case histories permit guidelines to be formulated as to the optimum location of tunnel alignments in faulted and folded terrains, and also in karst regions. Geological factors adversely affecting durability of tunnel linings can be minimised by adoption of appropriate construc- tion practices.

It is well known that some sinkholes or subsidence take place from time to time in the areas where abandoned room and pillar type mines exist. The authors have been involved with the stability of abandoned mines beneath urbanized residential areas in Tokai region and there is a great concern about the stability of these abandoned mines during large earthquakes as well as in long term. The 2003 Miyagi Hokubu and 2011 Great East Japan earthquakes caused great damage to abandoned mines and resulted in many collapses. Particularly the effect of the quality of backfilling of abandoned mine below the urbanized areas is very important under static and dynamic conditions. The authors present the effect of the quality of backfilling on the ground subsidence associated with abandoned lignite mines under static and dynamic conditions and discuss its implications on the urbanized areas above abandoned lignite mines in this study. In conjunction with a study on wear of drag bits the effect of clearance angle on penetration rate was studied.Increases in clearance angle from 24 1/2 up to 30° gave an increase in penetration rate. Thereafter the rate was apparently affected by partial clogging with cuttings.Analysis of results was by a linear regression model and the t-test was applied to assess the significance of parameters in the penetration equation.

Poor performance in the several stages of the magnetite recovery circuit, coupled with poor desliming through inefficient and over- loaded desliming screens, led to excessive magnetite consumption. An accurate and reliable sampling programme was established covering all outlets of the plant. Emphasis was placed on frequency of increments in an endeavour to detect extreme conditions of short duration. Systematic checking of the entry points to these outlets than identified those sections of the recovery circuit at fault, namely magnetite recovery separators and the heavy media cyclone product rinsing screens. More product rinsing water was provided, and modifications to the rinsing screens improved the efficiency of these units. Consistency of operation through automatic control of level eliminated the sudden massive losses in the magnetic separators. Load on the recovery circuit was then reduced by improvements to the raw coal desliming screens. A 50 per cent reduction in magnetite consumption was achieved.

One of the more recent developments within the mining industry has been the adoption of formal continuous improvement programs. A continuous improvement (CI) program was launched across Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) in early-2002. The purpose of this program was to identify further operating improvements within departments. The focus of the continuous improvement program was not only on the areas of the operation which were performing below expectations but also on areas of the operation which were performing well but could still be further improved.The effectiveness of a continuous improvement program depends on the stability of the processes in place and the participation of many employees from all levels of the business.Continuous improvement has had some successes and failures at KCGM and this paper will discuss both within the open pits department. Further improvements that could be made to the process will also be discussed. Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston operation is located in the Kalgoorlie Goldfields and it the largest gold mine in Australia producing over 800 000 ounces of gold per annum.
