A major problem with many items of underground equipment is that they have either been converted or adapted from surface equipment, or that they have been designed and assembled in comfortable offices and factories with adequate lighting, specialised tools, and ample space. As soon as they are in use underground in cramped spaces maintenance frequently becomes difficult, parts are awkward to change, and a whole range of accidents can happen.Similarly, ingenious operators discover a whole range of uses for which the equipment was not designed, such as using a loader bucket for a work platform, or scaling backs with it.Design modifications of equipment and removal of hazardous components that can trap limbs is expensive when the dangers are discovered in operation, sometimes posthumously, and it is not surprising that workers compensation insurance premiums are high. The cheapest place to ensure that equipment is safe is in the design office, where the operator should be considered first, rather than being added to a purpose built machine as an afterthought.

Over the last 15 years Indonesia has experienced a surge in coalexploration, which has led to the development of a major export industry. This coal exploration has improved the understanding of the geology of the Indonesian coal deposits. The main economic coal deposits are of Eocene and Miocene to Pliocene age, which mainly occur in Kalimantan and Sumatra and were formed from peat deposits in an equatorial paleoclimate similar to that prevailing today. Some of these peats were domed peats, which grew above the normal water tables, under a climate of year-round rainfall; these peats grew above the level at which waterborne mineral matter can enter the system, resulting in low ash and sulphur, and locally very thick coal. It is believed that such peats have formed the unusually thick, low ash, and low sulphur Miocene coals of Indonesia. Coal deposits of Eocene age are typically characterised by thinner seams, with relatively higher contents of ash and sulphur. The Miocene coals and Eocene coals both appear to have formed in lacustrine, coastal plain or deltaic depositional environments, similar to the modern peat-forming environments of eastern Sumatra and parts of Kalimantan. The Eocene coals formed mainly in extensional tectonic settings. Miocene - Pliocene coal deposits formed in a range of tectonic settings.

Mine to mill optimisation is not a recently developed concept. It is one which is finally gaining greater acceptance in the Australian mining industry, possibly as a consequence of the downturn in markets and certainly made possible by the development of tools and techniques to measure and predict performance of mining equipment and milling plants. Fragment size after blasting has a major bearing on the performance of all aspects of mining and a major influence on the economics of the mine and mill. The process to optimise fragmentation consists of identifying the key factors, measuring their sensitivity through a modelling and trialing program and conducting economic evaluations on the changes on both the mine and mill. Management of the Ernest Henry copper-gold mine in Northern Queensland, Australia, has espoused the mine-to-mill concept and is actively pursuing excellence in blasting to drive down the total cost of mining. Ernest Henry has extremely hard, wet and heavily jointed geological conditions, and had high powder factors and a large percentage of oversize material reporting to the crusher or ROM stockpile. A blasting improvement program was undertaken between Ernest Henry Mining, Thiess Contractors and Orica Explosives to optimise the ore size distribution, particularly the oversize component, as a step to reducing production costs. Measures of success included bringing the rock breaker back from double shifts to part-time operation and increasing direct dumping into the crusher from 70 per cent to 92 per cent. Tools and technologies to predict and measure the performance of individual blasts are needed before it is possible to optimise fragmentation or the downstream processes. These include such specialised Orica Explosives tools as SABREX, POWERSIEVE, and POWERLINE and commercially available drill monitors. As important are the more common still and video camera, borehole loggers, measuring tapes, surveying equipment such as face profilers, and a high speed camera if possible. There are many tools which can be applied however it is rarely necessary or possible to use all of them due to time constraints and a point of diminishing returns. The critical point is knowing what the true parameters of the blast were compared to design -only then can the predictive tools be effectively utilised. Stage one of the program has seen gradual improvement as the understanding grew and practices have been implemented resulting in reduced bridging in the crusher, geological mapping with respective blast designs and the oversize component under control. This paper is about a process approach which links tools and technology to understand the fragmentation drivers and then to optimising the size distribution. Pressure hydrometallurgy is becoming an increasingly common unit operation in the treatment of gold and base metal ores and concentrates. The design of an adequate and appropriate pilot-scale testwork program is, therefore, essential in order to minimise the risks associated with developing a project in which autoclaves form a key part of the operation. This paper identifies the approaches that have been taken in the piloting of oxidative and pressure acid leach operations. Particular emphasis is placed on the determination of scale-up ratios between the pilot and commercial plants and the pilot-plant run durations. The issues, both metallurgical and project-specific, that can impact these key parameters are reviewed.

The ""comparable sales"" method of valuation attributes value to an asset by reference to actual sales of comparable assets or to the market capitalisation of companies with comparable assets. This methodology is widely used in real estate valuations. The real estate approach can be used to value mining and exploration properties where there are actual sales of comparable or similar assets in the recent past. The practical limitations of the comparable sales method are well known and self evident: limited number of transactions, limitations on comparability and inadequate data. The real value of the comparable sales method is in its use as a validity check. Estimates of value of mining and exploration assets are so sensitive to so many variables that all valuation methods have limitations. Accordingly there is real value in attempting to establish benchmarks from comparable sales. Apparently sophisticated valuation methods can mislead by creating the impression that valuation is a precise science. The judgement of the valuer is critical and judgements can be wrong. Any available evidence from actual sales that are even remotely comparable can provide useful input to the valuation process.

There has been considerable attention in the literature to coarse sizing by wet and dry screening, but these methods have not proven to be applicable to the calculation of screen capacities for fine wet sizing, desliming and media recovery: A method is presented for the calculation of the size of screens for such duties, being based on the mean particle size of the oversize material on the screen which reflects the surface area from which the fines or media must be removed. Similarly for dewatering, it is the area from which the water must be drained. Desliming, media recovery and dewatering are each considered along with water require- ments both with the feed and as wash water.

CABS - Costs and Budget System - is being developed to provide more appropriate tools to assist cost control. The most important of these tools is responsibility accounting, that is to ensure the respons- ibility for costs and budgets is placed at the lowest possible managerial level in the Company. The system design and computer techniques utilized include the use of on-line facilities for enquiry purposes plus entry and validation of data. Data base management is used to permit the complex relationships that exist between data in CABS to be defined and maintained. The system must be flexible in order to cater for organisational and other maintenance changes with minimum time delays. The major outputs of the system are reports produced in several cost dissections, by responsibility, by products by cost collection group and type of expense. A significant role in CABS has been played by users. This includes development, control and review of the system proposals in order to ensure that the objectives and requirements from all sections in the Company are met. This role has included Project Leader for the system plus a committee formed to provide formal acceptance of the system Design.

It was once considered sufficient to revegetate old mine sites using grass or trees. At the commencement of the Stawell JV (SJV) operation in 1981, management determined that pre-existing vegetation would be replaced. This policy was somewhat 'ahead of its time'. The cost of rehabilitation at SJV averages $8000 per hectare. Rehabilitation of this calibre requires a practical understanding of local ecosystems.

The Queensland Mining Act 1968-1972 has now been in force for almost two years. The Act was completely re-written and has made for easier working, e.g., there is no distinction now between Gold Mining Leases and other Mining Leases. For the first time in the history of Queensland, provision has been made for caveats, so that options etc. can be protected. The chief problem which has arisen so far has been the question of the Government issuing mining leases to the holder of an Authority to Prospect over areas which are included iri its Authority. Litigation has taken place and an Appeal, it is understood, will shortly be heard by the Privy Council. The provisions dealing with labour conditions have been brought up-to-date and generally speaking, they are quite clear as to the responsibility of the Lessee. The Mining on Private Land Act has been repealed and the provisions relating to mining on private land are now a part of the Mining Act itself. All sections of our community are becoming increasingly aware of the dangers of uncontroll- ed erosion associated with modern earthworksy whether they be concerned with the protection of capital structures, reforestation of mine tailings or generally the aesthetic and ecol- ogical impact. Because of the many ecological variances and climatic conditions no single technique may be offered as the complete answer. Rather that a combination of a series of techniques is nec- essary to achieve an individual end result. These techniques may appear to be expensive initially, but when considered in relation to the overall cost, and we realise that this work represents our only insurance of the stability of our project, the cost of stabilisation is insignificant. Once erosion has commenced the cost of stabilisation escalates dramatically which highlights the definite need to include the requirement of stabilisation in early design of your projects. Stabilisation should commence during construction to ensure that control of mobile soils is gained at the earliest possible time.

In recent years great efforts have been made in the optimisation of ball mill operation. This paper describes a methodology developed for modelling and optimising the steady-state grinding process. Thirteen basic similarity numbers of the process are derived. Based on these similarity numbers, we build a group of mathematical models which give a full description of the relation between dependent and independent variables. The parameter estimation and multi-objective optimisation of the grinding process have been done using these models, and validated with experiments in a continuous laboratory-scale ball mill.

The disposal and subsequent encapsulation of mine tailings in a cost-effective and environmentally secure and responsible manner is one of the principal issues facing any modern mining project. A careful assessment of all options available for the capping and subsequent remediation of tailings is important because it can result in large capital, operating and closure cost-savings. For these reasons, the technology of geopolymerisation is receiving increasing attention for the stabilisation and solidification of waste materials produced from mining operations. The first part of the current study investigates the application of geopolymer technology to the capping of hypersaline mine tailings. It has been found that suitable geopolymeric materials which have satisfactory compressive strength, durability as well as low permeability, can be formed using between 60 - 75 per cent of mine tailings as the main ingredient. It has been established that geopolymeric materials have the ability to suppress dust generation and prevent salt precipitation on the surface of the mine tailings. The slurry-like consistency of geopolymers would promote efficient application procedures through established tailings disposal techniques. This is a possible close-out technique for hypersaline tailings storage facilities such as those commonly found in Western Australia, which meets both regulatory requirements and community expectations. The immobilisation of contaminant metals within geopolymers has been investigated in the second part of the present study. In particular, the leaching characteristics of Cu and Pb from geopolymeric matrices derived from different fly ash sources have been examined. Potential breakdown of each geopolymer containing metal contaminants due to the leaching of Si and Al from the geopolymeric matrix has also been investigated.

Many of the discrepancies that appear when comparing the results of reducing machinery are due to the nature of the materials reduced and the conditions under which they have been treated. It is therefore necessary that manufacturers should employ standard materials in their tests that sufficiently approximate the substances to be ultimately treated if the information is to be of any value to the purchaser. Another advantage to be gained by employing universal standard materials is that by their means one is enabled to compare the relative values of different types of machines. At present much of the data meted out to the public is insufficient to enable them to judge fairly. Of course the best test would be to send some of the stone tor which the machine is required, to be treated by the various crushers in the market that are likely to be suitable for the purpose, but this is not always possible. It would not take long to become accustomed to judge of the value of a machine for a specific purpose if it was guaranteed to work a certain quantity of some standard rock, even if that standard were not identical with the material to be treated.There are many points to be considered before selecting a machine, such as the size of the rough stone it will take, the size to which it will reduce it the proportions of various grades made when crushing to pass through a given mesh the form of the delivered particles the time taken to treat a+ certain quantity the horse-power required to drive the machine, both when loaded and unloaded whether constructed to crush wet or dry the wear and tear of the machine its total weight and weight of the heaviest part the cost of machine what attention it required whether the wearing parts are readily replaced, and several other points common to all machinery. 'When considering these varying quantities, we can tell at a glance certain machines that are suitable for a particular sort of work, and can then compare those belonging to the same class, thus avoiding errors made purposely or through ignotance by persons interested in different machines, who frequently compare machines originally constructed for.

Underground mine development remains as one of the most important factors in cost effective mining. Various forms of continuous development have been proposed with some of the earliest conceived centuries ago.The bore, fire and muck approach remains, in the late 20th century, as the predominant method of underground development, despite intense efforts over the past decade or so to develop other systems.Following a comprehensive analysis of development in the Australian mining industry, the reasons why the traditional development cycle has remained unchanged are identified and potential directions for the future are suggested.
