The production of copper by the Outokumpu direct blister process commenced in July 1988. The problems and incidents encountered in commissioning the main smelter equipment are outlined. Early difficulties were encountered in process control, hot metal handling, dust buildup in the off gas handling equipment, waste heat boiler tube failures, foam over of hot metal into the waste heat boiler and failure of ancilliary equipment.

An introductory review of the current grade control blasting techniques (selective mining strategies) used in the Eastern Goldfields has recently been undertaken. The survey was initiated and conducted by the Western Australian School of Mines. Four distinct selective mining strategies have been identified and a number of trends have been highlighted. Many operations, however, have developed techniques which use a hybrid method to suit the site conditions. The aim of all the mining strategies is to produce an optimum product. The optimum product is one which contains no diluent and experiences no mixing of the various identified ore and waste blocks and is fully reco- vered at the minimum overall operating cost. Due to this unified aim all of the grade control blasting techniques have many common design Features.

A 250 tons per day ammonia-ammonium carbonate leaching plant is now being operated by Samin Limited, to extract copper from the oxidised ores at the Burra mine. This forms the first stage of a plant, which will eventually have a capacity in excess of 1,000 tons per day. The article reviews the history of the mines at Burra and the metallurgical studies which have been undertaken since the old mines closed in 1917, in an endeavour to recover the copper from the low-grade deposits left by the original miners. The reasons why an ammonia leaching process was selected instead of the conventional flotation or acid leaching methods are discussed. The paper concludes with a detailed description of the plant and the basis on which it was designed.

The, Ore-bodies.-The ore-bodies of the North mine, North Broken Hill Ltd.; consist of two lenses, connected by a narrow neck of mineralized country. They pitch at an angle of 40° in an easterly direction and dip north at 60° to the horizontal. The southern ore-body, on a horizontal plane, has a total maximum length of 800 feet and in one place attains a width of 230 feet, whilst the northern orebody has a maximum'length of 600 feet and a maximum width of 80 feet.

Removing the interference of latter events, the data of geophysical (such as gravity and aeromagnetic) anomalies may indicate whether the mobile belt exist and whether the adjacent terrains of the mobile belt originally belong to one single unit. The petrotectonic assemblage can provide informations about the tectonic setting where it was generated from. The structural style can exhibit the kinetic and kinematic processes. The form of ancient isogeotherm may reflect the ancient geothermal regime which is related to the tectonic mechanism. In general, the early Precambrian terrains suffered polymetamorphism and multiple structural deformation. The researches must be carried out for the distribution of paleogeotharm and m.tamo'phic facies and zones on the basis of recovering the early structural style with structural analysis method; then a relatively correct conclusion may be geined on the ancient geothermal regime. This method can be known as "Ancient Thermotectonic Analysis". Through the sythetical research, a real knowlege about the tectonic setting of early Precambrian mobile belt can be obtained.

This paper presents the development of a regrind facility design at BHP BillitonÆs Leinster Nickel Operations (LNO) in Western Australia. The recovery opportunity was identified from an analysis of plant operating data together with scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements on relevant tailings streams from LNO. A laboratory procedure was developed to determine the potential recovery improvement of installing a regrind facility at LNO. The last step in formulating the process flow sheet and defining the process design criteria was to construct and operate a pilot plant, which incorporated four banks of flotation cells and an Xstrata M20 Isa Mill. Pilot plant on/off trials were used to define the expected metallurgical benefit. A prefeasibility engineering design and cost estimate was completed. Following a successful internal business evaluation, a feasibility study is currently underway.

A wide variety of problems are encountered on a day to day operating basis in the Isa Mine Concentrators. These vary from complex textural problems in the lead-zinc concentrator and their subsequent effect on grinding and flotation to scheduling of converter slag treatment in a chalcopyrite concentrator. With the advent of process control, metallurgists need to specialise and keep up to date with technology improvements. Long Shaft was initially developed using a rail haulage system on every working level comprising battery electric locomotives and granby trucks loaded by rail mounted rocker shovels. Production was commenced using conventional hand held cut and fill mining methods. In an effort to improve productivity and reduce operating costs a mechanised cut and fill stoping method evolved to suit the wider sections of the orebody. To further improve productivity and reduce costs the mechanised levels of the mine are progressively being redeveloped to enable the use of trackless diesel haulage equipment. An added benefit of trackless haulage equipment will be the ability to place development mullock into stopes as Fill.

LKAB is a mining company situated in northern Scandinavia, manufacturing blast furnace- and direct-reduction pellets and sinter fines. Pellet development at LKAB comprises testing at laboratory and pilot scale. The LKAB Experimental Blast Furnace (EBF) is a unique test facility and an important tool in terms of product development and process research. For a better understanding of pellet behaviour in the blast furnace process, LKAB has started to use automated mineralogy for the characterisation and quantification of its iron ore products and pellets. A mineralogical evaluation of iron ore olivine pellets, taken from a test campaign in the EBF, has been performed. The studied materials were samples from excavated pellet layers through the entire EBF at different positions. A large number of iron ore pellets was analysed using a combination of automated mineralogy, using QEMSCAN«, and chemical analysis. Important information about the performance of pellets in the blast furnace process, such as a quantitative description of mineral and iron oxide alterations at different temperatures, Fe-reduction and alkali deposition, was obtained.

Although the flotation cell has been under continuous development over the past 80 years, an understanding of the precise roles of a cell in produc- ing the flotation result had evolved slowly. In fact, detailed studies of cell dynamics began only in the 1940s when flotation practice had almost reached the half-century mark. The earliest generalizations related cell capacity to power intensity (hp/vol- ume) (Rose, 1946), and specific operating features such as aeration and power ' consumption to impeller submergence and operating speed (Read, 1933). In the 1950s hydrodynamic characterization of cells through power coefficients and air flow numbers began (Arbiter and Harris, 1961) and has continued to the present, with increasing industrial use of these concepts (Degner, 1982; Degner and Treweek, 1976). Liquid flow measurements in Wemco cells (Degner, 1982) made liquid flow numbers and turnover frequencies available for more complete under- standing of cell dynamics. The present overview of flotation technology is a critique of cell design. The cell process represents the interactions between cell dynam- ics, cell geometry, and ores, with the latter prepared for that interaction through size reduction and reagent treatment. The presence of arsenic in solutions which result from the processing of many sulphide minerals leads to a need to understand its speciation in aqueous systems and the reactions of those various species. This paper deals in particular with the precipitation of arsenic from aqueous solution in the form of insoluble inorganic compounds in order to remove arsenic from various hydrometallurgical process streams. The solubility and stability of the precipitates is examined. It has been found that many of the arsenic compounds presently used are more soluble than previously accepted and unstable in disposal sites such as tailings ponds.

The Mount Charlotte grinding circuit at KCGMÆs Fimiston mill was recently equipped with three 650 mm CAVEX cyclones in order to improve the overflow P80, reduce the fines bypass to the underflow and improve the underflow density/recovery of water to the overflow. After the first two sets of surveys were conducted air core boosters (ACBs) were installed on the 650 mm CAVEX cyclones in an attempt to further increase their performance. JKTech was approached to assist with the examination of the data obtained from the surveys; this data was intensively modelled to determine, to a high degree of confidence, the impact the changes to the cyclones had on the classification and the benefits to the plant. This paper outlines the outcomes of the trial and the methods used to determine those outcomes.

Seven streams of a low tonnage pilot plant operation on Cu/Pb/Zn ore from the Golden Grove Project were continuously assayed using an AMDEL In-Stream Analysis (ISA) system. The ISA instrumentation is briefly described as is the calibration procedure employed. The successful application of this instrumentation in the dynamic environment of a pilot plant operation is discussed. The operational sequence of the Golden Grove pilot plant is outlined along with the original project objectives and how they were achieved by the implementation of ISA. Results for the different complex flowsheets used are discussed, followed by the perceived benefits of installing such equipment in this operation.

In many branches of engineering, there has to be an understanding of the motion of fluids in order to solve problems. Many safety and health problems in the mining industry are typical examples that involve the understanding and analysis of fluid flow, such as explosions, the spread of fires, dispersion of gas and dust, and ventilation patterns. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is concerned with the use of computers to produce information about the ways in which fluids flow in given situations. Until recently CFD has been widely applied to a variety of industrial sectors and increasingly to problems in the health and safety areas. With the arrival of more powerful computers and CFD packages, CFD techniques are no longer practised solely in a research environment, but can be used by engineers in many industrial fields. This paper introduces the basic concepts and general procedures involved in the use of CFD technology. A comparison is given as a guide to the major features of a number of widely used commercial CFD codes. Areas of potential CFD applications are identified in a range of safety and health problems in mining industry. An example is presented to illustrate the use of this technology. It is believed that the exploitation of these areas using CFD approach will contribute significantly to the solution of today's many mine health and safety problems.

The cost of drilling consumables is always a large component of any mine budget. It is important that this cost be carefully examined with a view to reducing the overall cost per inetre or at least minimising its escalation.At Renison it is considered that the only way to ensure drilling costs do not rise unduly is through a total system of control from purchase to disposal.In 1979 extension of an existing drill supply service contract was carefully examined and abandoned in favour of a hybrid system. This system is providing a great deal of control over the use of drilling consumables and has maintained a relatively constant cost per drilled metre over the last five years.Current consignment stock contracts for drilling consumables are strictly specified by the Technical Services section of the Mine Department and consumables purchased under these contracts are distributed and refurbished/sharpened by a contractor.The total result of this package is individual drilling items that achieve the best cost per metre and careful distribution and maintenance to ensure maximum life.

The properties along Ida Avenue in Mosman stand 10 m above the road on an outcrop of Sydney sandstone. Access to the houses is generally via a long steep staircase. The owner of 22 Ida Avenue identified an opportunity to use the natural strength of the rock beneath his property to excavate an underground garage and to provide access to the basement of his property via a 10 m elevator shaft from the back of the garage. This paper will describe the design and construction of this unique and innovative urban development.

Mount Isa Mines Limited commissioned the Heavy Medium Plant in August 1982. The first processing stage using Mogensen Sizer 2056 dry screens, experienced unresolvable cloth blinding problems in attempting to separate fine, damp Lead/Zinc ore at 1.7 mm. A large proportion of the fines incorrectly reported to oversize and hence to the wet preparation screens. This wet preparation screen overloading produced multiple operating and maintenance problems. The plant configuration precluded retrofitting any alternative proprietary screen. An internal Mount Isa Mines research and development programme was established to design and build a screen to achieve the required per- formance within the site constraints. The resulting ISA SIZER screen has exceeded metallurgical performance expectations. A `clean sheet' approach to the design also permitted elimination of maintenance difficulties experienced with the Mogensen Sizer. Four `production model' ISA SIZERS were installed in February 1988. The ISA SIZER screen, now fully developed is available commercially and will satisfy many screening plant requirements.
