A novel approach is suggested for the solution of planning and development problems in the coal, mining industry. The formation of coal measures depends to a significant extent on sequential geological processes and events which are probably best defined in a "system of processes and responses." The great number of variables in such a system is a characteristic feature of geological environments. Research work over the past two decades, in particular, has successfully established analytical procedures for the identification and definition of relevant and irrelevant variables for mining developments in specific geological situations. Such situations are typifiable within the regional geological setting of coal deposits. Scale gaps can be bridged by reliance on common symmetrical attributes and pervasive geometric features. Depositional processes and their resulting attributes are responsible for the development of mechanically significant rockmass "defects" and anisotropies; such features have to be identified and assessed for the selection of colliery design criteria. It is suggested that the procedural frame- work of systems engineering analysis is a most appropriate tool for the assessment of those geological features that can influence the mechanical behaviour of the "floor-seam-roof" system in "high technology" mining operations of the future. Perilya Broken Hill, from its inception, has budgeted for more than 2.0 million tonnes per year from the Southern Operations. This tonnage was planned to come from in excess of 100 stopes per year in a remnant mining environment with numerous mined voids and consequent mining challenges. To mine an average of two stopes per week requires patience, flexibility and detailed knowledge to best manage the potential risks and hazards. The evolution of the Perilya Broken Hill Mine Planning Process has necessitated the establishment of a process to identify and manage these risks during the planning stage in a reliable but efficient manner. This process is to ensure that vital steps for each stope are not missed, and that each personÆs work can be tracked by other members of the team. This paper outlines the planning process from resource to stope closure.

A better connection between laboratory- and pilot-scale test results, and heap bioleaching performance can be achieved by generating reliable information on the fundamental microbial, chemical and physical processes that occur in heaps and incorporating this information into a comprehensive and robust model. More efficient heap bioleaching, particularly of chalcopyrite, has the potential to add value to the mining industry as well as deliver attractive environmental and social benefits to the communities within which those companies operate.The results of fundamental chemical and microbiological studies of the leaching mechanism, the temperature dependence of chalcopyrite bioleaching, and the optimisation of leaching conditions are described with examples from full-scale heaps. The development and application of a number of novel techniques and tools has assisted our understanding of heap subprocesses mineralogy, hydrology, chemistry and microbiology. The heap bioleaching model HeapSim, which embodies a large number of effects not previously accounted for in other models, continues to be refined and has been applied successfully to the study of several heap bioleach systems.

Whenever rock is tipped from above, severe eruptions of airborne dust occur into the airways connected to tipping stations of rock passes (ore and waste) on the lower levels of a gold mine in the North West Province of South Africa. An investigation was undertaken to understand the nature of the physical phenomenon, in order to propose possible solutions. Accordingly, measurements were taken underground, involving the simultaneous logging at two levels of the transient pressures produced in the orepass by tipping from various levels. Two portable data loggers with associated transducers were custom-built for this purpose. Measurements were taken during a tipping program in which rock quantities and levels were controlled. Pressure pulses that are generated by the falling rock drive the airborne-dust eruptions. When tipping from a specified level, recorded pressure pulse waveforms were found to be repeatable on any given level, irrespective of the amount of rock falling, but measurements were conspicuously different on different levels. It was recognised that a pressure pulse is generated as the falling rock passes through the constricted region û a relatively narrow neck û at each tipping station. In passing through the constricted areas the mass of falling rock acts as a æleaky piston in a cylinderÆ and compresses the length of the air column in the orepass below that level. Once the rock has passed through the constriction, the pressure is released and this behaviour causes a regular train of pressure pulses that are separated by the time taken for the rock to move from one level to the next. Based on this physical understanding of the dust eruptions, a computational model has been developed that can reproduce all the main features of the measured phenomena. The model has been verified adequately against the measurements and can now form the basis for simulating a range of possible engineering solutions.

A broad zone of intra-plate volcanism occurs for some 3000 km along the E. Australian coastal regions, extending from far northern Queensland southwards to Tasmania, westwards to western Victoria, and into southeastern South Australia. The age range, taken over the whole region, extends from Eocene to Holocene. Wellman & McDougall (1974) recognised the occurrence of three distinct types of volcanic occurrences: (a) Lava field provinces, dominantly basaltic and commonly strongly undersaturated, but of variable size. Large lava fields are especially exemplified by the younger provinces in northern Queensland (e.g. Nulla, McBride), and western Victoria. (b) Central volcano provinces, in which a reasonably well defined volcanic edifice is discernable. Such provinces are built of mildly undersaturated to saturated mafic lavas, but are also characterised by felsic volcanism (and often substantial mafic and felsic intrusive phases). Examples are the Springsure-Minerva Hills province, the Tweed and Focal Peak Shields (southeastern Queensland to northeastern N.S.W.), and the Nandewars, Warrumbungles, and Canobolas volcanic centres (N.S.W.). (c) A single leucitite province in N.S.W. Wellman and McDougall (1974) were able to show that the central volcano provinces exhibit a remarkably regular southward age migration pattern, the calculated migration rate being 66 + 5 mm yr , and these authors interpreted this in terms of the northward passage of the Australian plate across a fixed 'hotspot' within the upper mantle. The leucitite province also fits this migration pattern. The lava field provinces apparently exhibit more erratic regional age distribution patterns, but Sutherland (1981) has interpreted the data in terms of a multiple 'hotspot' model. THOSE who have had occ.asion to sample a mine not infrequently find that it is impossible to take their sample cuts at regular distances apart, owing to the ground being close timbered, a stope having been taken out, or some other cause. When such is the case a tedious calculation becomes necessary in order to obtain an accurate result. A conscientious man will make the tedious calculation, but one who is inclined to be lazy, or who does not recognize the importance of accuracy, or has not the time, may be satisfied with either the arithmetical or weighted arithmetical mean result.There are two main systems of taking samples when the cuts are taken-(l) at equal distances, (2) at unequal distances. When the samples are out at equal distances apart there are three methods of computing the assay value :-1 (a) By Arithmetical Mean. The sum of the values and sum of the widths are each divided by the total number of samples, in order to obtain the value and width respectively, no allowance being made for the relative widths arid values. The result isabsolutely inaccurate, and should never be used under any circumstances.1 (b) By Geometrical Mean. The assay widths ie, feet %, feet oz, inch dwt, &c, are added together and the sum of these is divided by the sum of the widths.

Heap leaching is establishing itself as an efficient method for the extraction of gold from low grade ore. It has the advantage of low capital costs, low operating costs and rapid startup. However, not all ores are amenable to heap leaching. It is only applicable to well oxidized ores that have reasonable permeability characteristics. Ore with excess fines or clay often display low permeability and are unsuitable for heap leaching.In this study, an attempt has been made to increase the rate of cyanide leach solution percolation by flocculating clay particles or reducing the surface tension of the leach solution. A wetting agent was found to decrease the rate of gold dissolution, possibly by presenting a hydrophobic surface to the gold particle. Flocculation of the clay increased the solution flow rate. The flocculation agent had no affect on the total gold leached but decreased the leaching rate.

As near surface deposits are increasingly mined out and pit widths beginto exceed the reach of practical direct-casting stripping machines, high haulage costs can make truck-shovel pre-stripping operations uneconomic. This is compounded because the rate of inflation for diesel fuel oil, lubricants, tyres, etc. exceeds the general rate of inflation. The use of conveyor transport systems, long established in terracemining operations in weak materials, e.g. engineering soils, can provide a viable haulage alternative in pre-strip operations and in some open pit settings. The paper describes the engineering requirements and basic economics of such systems.

Moss, manager of the mine and for the privilege piIling information not previously made public.The limited time at my disposal has coolled to, curtail the scope of my paper to a few practices in ore treatment which are being worked on the Kalgurli Mine, but which I believe are of more than ordinary interest to thp~e Goncerned in modern treatment of gold ores. As an introduction to my subject it is, necessary that I should give a brief outline of the process by whiGh the gold is won from the complex sulpho-telluride ore of the Kalguili mine.My business is not to enter into any discussion as to the relative merits of the two rival sulpho-telluride ore treatment processes at work on the Kalgoorlie field, viz, the treatment of the unroasted ore after shining by solutions of bromocyanide, as against the treatment of the ore-after roasting by solutions of potassium or sodium cyanide either in filter presses or percolating sand vats. Even if reliable costs and percentages of extractions were obtainable in each case, it would not constitute an infallible basis of comparison, as the larger plants would necessarily have an advantage in cost per ton as against the small plants, and the other conditions obtaining are in many Cases dissimilar.

Blast fragmentation can have a significant impact on the profitability of a mine. An optimum run of mine (ROM) size distribution is required to maximise the performance of downstream processes. If this fragmentation size distribution can be modelled and controlled, the operation will have made a significant advancement towards improving its performance. Blast fragmentation modelling is an important step in Mine to MillTM optimisation. It allows the estimation of blast fragmentation distributions for a number of different rock mass, blast geometry, and explosive parameters. These distributions can then be modelled in downstream mining and milling processes to determine the optimum blast design. When a blast hole is detonated rock breakage occurs in two different stress regions û compressive and tensile. In the first region, compressive stress waves form a æcrushed zoneÆ directly adjacent to the blast hole. The second region, termed the æcracked zoneÆ, occurs outside the crush one. The widely used Kuz-Ram model does not recognise these two blast regions. In the Kuz-Ram model the mean fragment size from the blast is approximated and is then used to estimate the remaining size distribution. Experience has shown that this model predicts the coarse end reasonably accurately, but it can significantly underestimate the amount of fines generated. As part of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P483A Mine to MillTM project, the Two-Component Model (TCM) and Crush Zone Model (CZM), developed by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), were compared and evaluated to measured ROM fragmentation distributions. An important criteria for this comparison was the variation of model results from measured ROM in the fine to intermediate section (1 mm to 100 mm) of the fragmentation curve. This region of the distribution is important for Mine to MillTM optimisation. The comparison of modelled and Split ROM fragmentation distributions has been conducted in harder ores (UCS greater than 80 MPa). Further work involves modelling softer ores. The comparisons will be continued with future site surveys to increase confidence in the comparison of the CZM and TCM to Split results. Stochastic fragmentation modelling will then be conducted to take into account variation of input parameters. A window of possible fragmentation distributions can be compared to those obtained by Split. Following this work, an improved fragmentation model will be developed in response to these findings.

The'treatment of the South Alligator valley uranium ores passed through three phases dictated by economic circumstances during the years 1956- 640 In the first phase high grade ores were treated by hand sorting and wet gravity separation for recovery of high grade concentrate to meet a United States Atomic Energy Commission (U.S.A.E.C.) contract for plus 50 per cent pitchblende concentrates. Secondly tailings from the gravity plant and some high grade ores were trucked to Rum Jungle and sold to the Australian Atomic Energy Comm- ission (A.A.E.C.). Thirdly solvent extraction plants were built at Moline (previously Northern Hercules) by United Uranium N.L. (UOU.N.L.) and at the South Alligator River by South Alligator Uranium N.L. (SOA.U.N.L.). These were the first solvent extraction plants designed in Australia, as earlier plants used the ion exchange process for recovery of uranium oxide. The plants were small, indeed the S.A.U.N.L. 15 ton per day plant was possibly the smallest commercial plant known, but they operated efficiently with good recoveries, and were placed on a care and maintenance'òbasis when contracts were filled. Sulphuric acid was supplied in bulk to both plants by the A.A.E.C. from the 30 ton a day acid plant at Rum Jungle. Gold was recovered as a by product of uranium ore from the Moline plant.

One is in a pulp density gauge, and using this example, the way in which a microprocessor-based unit can be made to be self-calibrating is described. The other is in an on-stream analysis detector for uranium in solvent, where a microprocessor is used to re- place a mini-computer.

Interpreted geologic domains provide the geologic architecture of many current models used to estimate the potential economic resources in mineral deposits. The spatial extent of each domain is usually defined by a three-dimensional wireframe or triangulated surface.The set of geologic wireframes forming part of a resource model might generally be called a spatial interpretation of some set of geologic features coincident with the mineralisation, based primarily on logged and mapped properties of the samples and other exposures of the mineralisation. The interpreted spatial distribution of rock type, alteration and grade of drill hole samples above a particular grade threshold are commonly used criteria in constructing the geologic domain wireframes. Frequently, the grade threshold is closely related to the anticipated economic cut-off grade. The boundaries or spatial limits of different domains are most commonly defined as æhardÆ or æsoftÆ. A æhardÆ boundary usually means no dependent relationship of any kind is defined between the properties of samples inside a particular domain wireframe and those samples outside the wireframe. A æsoftÆ boundary commonly implies that some kind of dependent relationship does prevail between the properties of samples inside and outside the particular wireframe. Many ways are used to describe those relationships, few of which are based on spatial analysis of the continuity of sample attributes across the domain boundaries. In local estimation procedures such as ordinary block kriging, æhardÆ boundaries act as a total barrier to the influence of samples on either side of the boundary depending on the location of the block being estimated. In some instances, æsemi-permeableÆ boundaries are used in which the samples inside a domain wireframe are allowed to influence the estimates outside but not the reverse. This can lead to many undesirable effects in estimates of block grades.This paper discusses the value of this approach to geologic domaining from a viewpoint of model complexity, as well as in relation to the implications for both linear and non-linear estimation methods and contrasts it with alternatives. It also explores some important consequences of using æhardÆ and æsoftÆ geological boundaries with the commonly used modelling methods: excessive smoothing of estimates near domain boundaries and conditionally biased estimates of grade at the global and local scale.

The Prince Lyell Mine has been the major production source at Mount Lyell since under-ground mining commenced in 1972.Three lifts of stopes have been mined to date, with the fourth, the 40 Series lift, to commence production this year. As the mine has progressed deeper, the ore haulage system has evolved to accommodate the mine's economic circumstances while maximizing efficiency.In the first, or 10 Series lift of stopes, ore was removed from drawpoints by L.H.D. units and tipped directly into rakes of 7 tonne rail cars. The original concept for deeper stoping lifts entailed L.H.D.'s tipping into long ore passes, rail haulage, underground crushing and hoisting to surface via the No. 1 Shaft. The suspension of the No. 1 Shaft project in 1976, due to economic difficulties, lead to the intro-duction of diesel truck haulage of ore, initially via the internal Prince Lyell Decline and now to surface via the Main Decline.

In process industries, time-dependent random fluctuations of raw material characteristics and mass flow rates in bulk material or pulp flows cannot be always prevented for different reasons, eg because of the geological situation (no uniform formation of the deposit) or/and because of technological reasons (segregation in bunkers or on stockpiles). Since a long time, there has been practical experiences that such fluctuations can have negative consequences, eg: ò fluctuations of the final products characteristics, ò higher expenditure for process control, and ò worsening of technological characteristics (recovery, sharpness of separation etc). In the literature, there can be found a lot of details as to, eg the improvement of the sharpness of separation in a jig in dependence on the raw material blending (Kubitza, 1981; Gathen, 1983) or the decreasing flotation recovery with increasing raw material characteristics fluctuations in iron and potash ore processing plants (Bubnova, 1978). Up to now, however, these consequences of random fluctuations, eg on the separation efficiency were not predictable theoretically. It could be shown by means of the general model for mechanical macroprocesses (Graichen, 1989), that the reduction of input fluctuations passing a blending facility can be calculated in this way. In this example, the steady state of the process is the wanted one, but, in general, the model is able to describe also non-steady states of the process regarded. On the other hand, the general model of mechanical macroprocesses has been used successfully for modelling separation processes, eg cross-flow and air classification (Molerus, 1969; Neesse, 1991; Senden, 1979; Tichonov, 1973). That is why it was tried to model the influence of input fluctuations on the separation efficiency, that means, the impact of non-steady states - as a consequence of random fluctuations - on a separation process. The models discussed in the literature are related nearly exclusive to the steady state of the process. The reasons for that lie in the (relative) simplicity of the models and the fact that the steady state is aimed at by means of blending processes under practical conditions - because of the advantages mentioned above. These models cited have proved to be superior to other models, since the basic general model for mechanical macropocesses makes possible the consideration of turbulence acting in the process unit and influencing the separation process essentially. This is valid also for modelling the turbulent cross flow classification, applied to mechanical classifiers and hydrocyclones, where the correspondence between the separation characteristics (cut size, separation sharpness) calculated and determined experimentally is much better than for other models.

By 1996 ground control-related problems at Brunswick Mine had raised serious concerns regarding the safe and economical extraction of large portions of the reserves. These difficulties were mainly caused by high stress levels in pillars, instabilities resulting from wide spans supported by ageing support elements, and chronic difficulties supplying rock fill from the surface quarry to the underground workings, which resulted in many large voids remaining open for long periods of time. Significant changes have been implemented at the site since 1996, amongst which were a change of mining method, the introduction of paste backfill, the establishment of stress management measures, and the introduction of shotcrete on a large-scale. This paper focuses on the regional ground conditions associated with both the previously used primary-secondary mining method and the newly implemented pyramidal pillarless technique, as well as on some of the stress management measures implemented at the mine.

Zinifex Rosebery Mine is a lead-zinc underground mining operation located at the base of Mount Black, on the West Coast of Tasmania. Mining activities at the Rosebery Mine have been undertaken for over 100 years, and it has been operating in its current form for over 60 years. A large surface and underground exploration drilling program over the last 18 months has increased the mineÆs expected mine life from five to 12 years, with expectations that over the next 18 months as the program continues this will swell to 20 plus years. Zinifex Ltd secured Rosebery Mine in April 2004 and commissioned a detailed life-of-mine (LOM) study on all aspects of the operation. One of the most detailed sections of this report was on the state of the current ventilation system. It was identified in this report that for mining at the current depth of approximately 1100 m to continue a minimum 30 per cent increase in ventilation quantity was essential, as well as a likely requirement for a refrigerant cooling plant for each of the two deepest panels, the K and P lenses. It was identified that Zinifex did not have personnel with the expertise in underground refrigeration to manage and implement a project of this nature. A second report was commissioned with Bluhm Burton Engineering (BBE), a South African firm specialising in both surface and underground large-scale refrigeration plants. BBE concluded that two refrigeration plants were required to provide the necessary cooling power in the lower sections of the mine. In 2005, with BBE as technical consultants, Zinifex Rosebery Mine embarked on a project to commission two underground refrigeration units capable of lowering the wet bulb temperature at the decline face by four degrees centigrade. This paper is intended to give the reader an overview of: Rosebery Mine operations,Rosebery underground refrigeration project,technical difficulties associated with implementing an underground refrigeration system, andkey learnings to date.

A field investigation by making use of the seismic method has been carried out in order to comprehend the mechanism of rockburst and gas outburst and their predictive measures. The seismometers were so arranged both on the surface and underground as to enclose a mining panel. Seismic signals detected by the array were recorded and processed by the 32-kwords computer system. At present the system is available for analysing the source location and Richter's scale of each event and for visualizing the distribution of seismic foci and released energy at any mining stage. The magnitude distribution of events can be regarded as a comparable index of the seismic activities among mining panels. An analysis of the spatial density distribution of seismic energy in the mining panel can be useful to distinguish a highly stressed zone from stress released areas. The energy released curve or the rate of energy release determined from seismic data is also a good indication of the seismicity.

This paper reviews the proportion of energy attributable to comminution within the Australian gold and copper mining sector. The need for this is motivated by inconsistencies in the quoted energy usage data and the lack of a common basis for reporting the fraction of energy in mining that is attributable to comminution. This study should form a reliable basis from which to assess both demand and opportunities to reduce energy consumption.The proportion of milling energy was calculated for the major producers in the Australian gold and copper sector. A sampling methodology created by Powell et al (2003 - 2010) was initially used to provide an accurate and meaningful measure of the energy used in the comminution process. However, no useful method for grouping similar mines was found. Fortunately, a surprisingly large amount of high quality data was found from a number of different sources, allowing the development of robust relationships to be used to estimate a high proportion of the unknown values. The fraction of energy attributable to comminution was found to be dependent on how the total energy consumption was defined. For instance, comminution accounted for 52 per cent of the electrical energy, but only 21 per cent of the total energy publicly reported by the mines because a substantial proportion of energy used on a mine is in the form of transportation fuel (mostly diesel). Critically, the measured electrical energy consumption does not account for transmission and generation losses, while diesel energy usage is typically quoted according to its calorific value. This review proposes that diesel should instead be converted via the mechanical efficiency factor for diesel engines. Using this conversion, comminution was found to account for 36 per cent of the available energy on average. This approach allows a useful basis of comparison for mines regardless of whether milling energy is obtained from electrical or diesel generation. A summary of the results are shown in Figure 7 with other values obtained from literature. The total comminution energy assessed in this study accounts for 1.3 per cent of AustraliaÆs electricity consumption, this figure will increase as the other mineral commodities are added to the study.CITATION:Ballantyne, G R, Powell, M S and Tiang, M, 2012. Excavation through sulfidic geologic materials during construction activities has resulted in acid rock drainage (ARD) related problems at numerous (>40) locations across all five geologic regions of Virginia, USA. Potential acidities ranging from >100 to develop a statewide sulfidic materials risk map; document ARD impacts to soil and water quality and engineered structures; and develop methods to assess site-specific risk potentials within a given highway corridor. A statewide sulfidic materials GIS risk map was developed based upon the state digital geology map which assigned four levels of relative risk to all mapped strata based upon predicted lime requirements and probabilities of encountering highly reactive materials. Non-highway construction activities have also routinely disturbed sulfidic materials, and a recent airport project in northern Virginia resulted in over 150 ha of extremely acidic (pH 45 mg/L) run-off from this site heavily damaged a receiving stream, partially due to the fact that it dissolved the galvanised steel water control structures in stormwater detention basins, leading to direct discharge of run-off and sulfidic sediments. The airport area was treated and revegetated in 2002 with a combination of lime-stabilised biosolids, straw mulch, and acid-tolerant grasses. Water quality in a receiving second-order stream quickly responded to the treatment, but some release of N was also noted as a secondary effect. Collectively, these results point out the importance of accurately assessing the potential for excavation of sulfidic materials in construction environments, and the necessity of developing toxic materials handling strategies similar to those employed in mining environments.
