The main asset of a mining company is the mineral resource; without resources there is no mining business and the infrastructure is useless. In this context the role of the mining geologist is to always keep the resource inventory to an optimum level for the mining business and to maximise the transformation of the resources into reserves in a multi- disciplinary work environment. In short, a ægood mining geologist has to always provide the best ore to the millÆ.To do his/her work properly, several technical skills are needed: to know how to observe and describe nature in order to optimise the data acquisition process, particularly when mapping; to have a good understanding of natural variability in order to develop proper sampling strategies and sample preparation protocols to minimise all the errors generated by the sampling process; to have a good understanding of assaying practices: their limitations as well as their assaying errors; to carefully and properly store the geological data and information and to preserve the geological patrimony; to fully understand ore forming processes to generate the best possible geoscientific models, which are fundamental for the mining business; to fully understand the consequences of the geoscientific models along the value chain from rock to cathodes; and to continuously validate and improve geological practices and models by continuous data collection and observation of geo- mining-metallurgy processes. Some very important behavioural competencies are also needed:long-term vision, passion for excellence and value generation, strategic influence, systemic and innovative thinking, and knowledge and experience transfer. Last but not least, it is important to point out that a deep knowledge of the mining business is essential to add value by using geology best practices.

The Reward polymetallic massive sulphide deposit occurs 35 km south of Charters Towers, adjacent to the Highway gold deposit (Fig. 1). It is hosted within rhyolitic lavas and interlayered volcaniclastics of the Cambro-Ordovician Mt Windsor Volcanics. Reward is a "blind" deposit discovered in 1987 after a long history of exploration by various companies in the area. The main pyrite dominant massive sulphide body occurs under 100m combined thickness of Tertiary fluviatile sediments overlying deeply weathered gossanous volcanics. The exploration case-history provides a striking example of how geological and structural models can be built up almost exclusively from drill information. Four different styles and ages of mineralisation are present: 1) volcanogenic Cu+Pb+Zn+Ag+Au massive sulphides of probable syngenetic origin; 2) remobilised Cu+Au in massive pyrite of metamorphic/deformational origin; 3) supergene and 4) oxide Cu+Au mineralisation of weathering origin. The massive pyrite body, containing chalcopyrite lenses, transects the stratigraphy and is inferred to contain in excess of 5 million tonnes. Overlying the primary mineralisation a supergene chalcocite rich zone contains a measured/indicated resource of 634,231 tonnes of 6.77% Cu which includes 287,000 tonnes of 1.32 g/t Au and 18 g/t Ag. In addition a measured/inferred oxide resource of 309,000 tonnes of 5 g/t Au and 27 g/t Ag overlies the supergene zone.

When, in 1985, Marty McFly is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a DeLorean ‘time machine’ in Back to the Future, he encounters young versions of his parents, and must make sure they fall in love or he will cease to exist. This Conference celebrates 40 years since the inaugural Mill Operators’ Conference in Mt Isa in 1978; over this period, great technological advances have been made in almost all aspects of mill operation, resulting in considerable improvements in grades and recoveries from ever-more complex ores. However, in 2018, the mining industry is facing challenges that might have been difficult to predict in 1978 (or were they?). The computer revolution, the information revolution, and the bio-technology revolution have all contributed to the increase in operating efficiencies, but, combined with the social revolution, they also call into question the existence of the mining industry as we know it. This presentation looks back at the ‘way things were’ in the 1970s, and at what was then considered to be the ‘basics,’ and attempts to sketch what the mining industry might be like in 2058. As Back to the Future Part II demonstrates so vividly, it is much easier to review the past than predict the future. It is difficult to know what form the mining industry will have in 40 years’ time. Nevertheless, as this presentation will argue, it is important to take action now, to ensure that it (like Marty McFly) does not cease to exist. Some courses of action are proposed, including going back to the basics of a very different past.*This is an abstract only. For the past 150 years, drilling and blasting has been an integral part of the underground mining industry in Australia. Ever since Busby's Bore was developed using black powder to supply Sydney with water, miners have been drilling holes, filling them with explosives and blasting the rock into a manageable size. The drilling was fairly straight forward but the explosives were always a mysterious commodity. It worked, but how and why? The explosives industry is now working much closer to the mining industry to dispel these mysteries and also to aid the advancement of explosive technology. This paper looks at the results of these advances in the form of explosives, accessories and blasting systems.

The Amazon Craton is one of the largest cratonic areas and comprises one of the est-endowed metallogenic provinces in the world. It hosts a number of different ore deposit types for which a variety of mineral exploration data are presently available at various scales and formats. These data, however, are not properly organised nor integrated by means of advanced spatial analysis tools. In this view, here we present a suite of neural network methods that were applied to these data, providing unprecedented mineral potential scenarios for several precious and base metals in the region. The phrase "Total-Energy" has, during the past few years, become widely used to describe a wide range of very different operations. However, if accurately described they all have one basic factor in common - energy usage is optimised with the prime mover being powered by gas or oil to generate shaft horsepower and the products of combustion being put to some use. The item which distinguishes a Total Energy system from any other engine or turbine driven project is that orate pains are taken to utilize the waste heat, whether this be in the form of exhaust gases and/or engine jacket ling water. n areas where grid supplies of electricity are readily available, the economics of most projects undoubtedly hinge upon the successful application of waste heat. However, there has been a growing awareness of other benefits, such as reliability of supply, which can be incorporated into the system. In particular these factors sway managements of hospitals and companies with complex computer facilities to examine closely the feasibility of Total Energy, Consequently, in America for example, where many systems have proved themselves the list of applications is wide - shopping centres, apartment blocks, office buildings, airline terminals, universities, schools, motels. And these do not cover the industrial sectors where the range is wider. The total number in North America is now approximately 500 and this to some extent-speaks for itself. In Australia, the real work involved in carrying out feasibility studies for Total Energy is only just beginning. 'in some quarters, the concept is not well received in that it is too new. Therefore, a typical approach is to play safe and wait until some other company has proved its operation "under Australian conditions". This is certainly a realistic approach when considering something revolutionary but as far as Total Energy.is"concerned all the individual components and sometimes combinations, (engines, generators, boilers, air-conditioning units) have been in operation for many years. The only innovation is that they are now all being brought together under one roof. This should not be forgotten when the question "where can I see something like this operating?" is asked.

Notwithstanding the world class work done by its committees in developing codes of ethics and of practice in field geological handbooks, mining cost estimation handbooks, and reserve estimation, the AusIMM could better prepare its membership for QA. MICA could provide a simple set of guidelines to enable consultant members to develop their own QA procedures manual conforming to AusIMM Codes and to IS09003, and AS3903.

There are a number of points on which I would like further information, but I will confine my remarks to a relatively small saving which is of particular interest in view of another paper to be presented this afternoon.Mention is made of a 50 per cent reduction in the amount of zinc used in the precipitation of gold slime from the pregnant solution. Would Mr. Harris enlarge on the methods by which they obtained this reduction; and could he give an actual figure of zinc consumption either by ton of ore treated or per ounce of bullion recovered.AuthorsWe consider the reduction of zinc is due to improved clarification of the pregnant solutions. The sand clarifiers used prior to the installation of the 50 ft. -thickener were not satisfactory due mainly to the blending of the hessian and matting under the sand. Under these conditions the leaf clarifiers were fed with overflow solution from the clarifiers and were overloaded in consequence. The addition of Calgon has also been beneficial.The present consumption of zinc per ton of solution treated is 088 lb. per ton.A. L. Mines in Queensland are transitioning to the progressive rehabilitation and closure plan (PRCP) framework. Mine operators are required to select and justify appropriate and viable post-mining land uses (PMLUs) following consideration of the surrounding landscape, community views and the objectives of local and regional planning strategies. The new approach offers opportunities for considering innovative PMLU options and collaborative use of post-closure mine assets, such as infrastructure (power, road/rail, buildings), dams and residual voids. Consideration of regional planning strategies will require a shift in thinking as mine closure is regulated and planned on an individual site basis and selection of PMLUs are commonly considered from this perspective. Planning at regional rather than site-specific scale offers strategic advantages, including the ability to align PMLU selection with the regional context and stakeholder aspirations (which could foster sustainable outcomes); address cumulative environmental and socio-economic impacts; consider options that are only viable at scale (ie across larger geographic areas); establish more extensive and connected ecological habitat corridors; reinstate larger expanses of functional agricultural land; and optimise regional resources (Hattingh, Williams and Corder, 2019). This paper presents the findings from a multidisciplinary project that identified PMLU options within Queensland’s four mining regions: the North-west Minerals Province, North Queensland, Bowen Basin and Clarence-Moreton and Surat Basin (Figure 1). To enable spatial analysis at the appropriate scale and to accommodate geographic diversity, North Queensland was divided into three geographical ‘focus areas’ – Weipa, Charters Towers and Tablelands. Delineation of the areas captured most of the mines within the wider region as well as regional characteristics and features.

As the surrounding environment continues to change and evolve, mine managers face a changing climate of expectations. TodayÆs mine managers must juggle competing pressures to deliver sound social, environmental and economic results. Leadership is a fundamental tool for the effective mine manager. Whilst mine managers require solid technical and operational skills, importantly the manager must be able to engage a workforce, build and retain employees and seize opportunity for growth and development when presented. An important tool for engaging employees in the business at Rio Tinto Aluminium is the business improvement programme. At Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs Weipa mine, the business improvement methodology Six Sigma is used to deliver measurable, sustainable outcomes for the business. The next step in Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs improvement journey is to implement Lean Manufacturing at all managed operations. The operating environment for mine managers continuously evolves and effective mine managers must be flexible and adaptive to meet challenges. Governance and regulation constantly change in an environment of commodity cycles and finite resources. This increases pressure on the economic return achieved by the operation. As such, effective mine managers must be aware of and manage the operating environment û the broader, issues-based environment not just the immediate day-to-day responsibility of mine managing. This includes delivering on safety, community and environmental priorities. At Rio Tinto Aluminium, part of managing the business is via investment in the area of social partnerships to engage employees and the broader community in Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs commitment to sustainability. The Future Reef partnership entered with the Great Barrier Reef Research Foundation in 2005 forms an important part of Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs climate change strategy. This four-year, A$1 million investment funds programmes looking at the effect of ocean acidification on the Great Barrier Reef. The partnership is a unique example of industry and science working together on an area of mutual and national concern. Modern mine managers require a broad set of skills to effectively deliver outcomes. TodayÆs mine managers must make innovative and courageous responses to determine todayÆs strategy for tomorrowÆs future.

The Northern Cape Province of South Africa is host to the Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF). The northern portion of the KMF hosts high-grade manganese referred to as Wessels’ type ore and is mined mostly from underground operations. WorleyParsons TWP is currently involved with the development of a ventilation shaft for one of these mines. The main challenge is to develop through the unconsolidated Kalahari material and weathered portion of the Karoo formation. These formations are preserved very erratically over short distances. A lack of understanding of the unique challenges presented for developing shafts in this area has resulted in the failed development of a shaft on an adjacent property and over-expended budgets on others.The renowned red sand of the Kalahari forms the top several tens of metres and overlies a horizon of gravels and calcrete that pose seasonally variable water ingress problems. A very stiff red clay horizon is then intersected. The Red Clay is prone to swellling during excavation and has been the main stumbling block on previous constructions. The standard approach has been to develop non-stop through this layer. The red clay is underlain by another horizon of calcrete, gravel and conglomerate that marks the bottom of the formation. The top of the Dwyka Tillite (Karoo Formation) is usually highly weathered and has a distinctive yellow colour. The weathered tillite is highly susceptible to drying and becomes friable. At reef-intersection, the combination of subhorizontal bedding and joints with the dominant subvertical faulting results in potential wedge failures in the manganese and ironstone units.This paper describes the geotechnical issues identified during the planning of the ventilation shaft and the risks associated with development through the Kalahari and weathered Karoo Formations. Distal air-fall ashes are widespread deposits that may record volcanism many hundreds of kilometres from their source. They are characteristically thin, fine-grained and have a low preservation potential usually being either eroded, or reworked and incorporated in overlying sediments following deposition. The most likely sites of accumulation are deep sea, lake and swamp environments where low energy conditions favour preservation. Post-depositional alteration of predominantly glassy volcanic ash is commonly extensive hampering identification of such layers in the geological record. As a result air-fall tuffs are poorly represented in the rock record and furthermore are commonly misinterpreted. Southeast Queensland during the late Triassic hosted active silicic volcanism and a number of fault-controlled basins in which coal-bearing sediments were accumulating. Silicic volcanics of late Triassic age are represented by the Brisbane Tuff in the Brisbane city area, the Chillingham Volcanics to the south of Brisbane and extending into New South Wales, the North Arm and Mount Byron Volcanics to the north of Brisbane, the Aranbanga Beds exposed around Gayndah and the Agnes Waters and Muncon Volcanics which occur northwest of Bundaberg. Stephens (1986) interprets these Volcanics as the remnants of a major silicic igneous 'province which he likens to modern continental orogenic margins. The Ipswich, Tarong and Callide Basins of southeast Queensland all contain coal measure sequences of late Triassic age that accumulated in alluvial plain environments. A Dicroidium flora is common to all and palynol.ogical evidence indicates a late Triassic (Carnian) age (de Jersey, 1975; Stevens, 1981). The coal seams of the three basins are characterised by their thickness (up to 25 m) and the presence of abundant thin, laterally persistent, kaolinite claystones (tonsteins) that show a marked similarity of morphology, texture and mineralogy. Detailed studies of the Ipswich Coal Measures (Falkner, 1986) suggest a volcanic air-fall origin for the tonsteins of the Ipswich Basin. Similar.tonsteins from the Tarong and Callide Basins provide evidence for widespread silicic volcanism during the late Triassic in southeast Queensland.

Although few people know of it, Woodlark Island produced a relatively large quantity of gold in a short period at the turn of the century. Deaths of miners, enticement to richer fields elsewhere, and world wars have contributed to the abandonment of these gold fields to their present obscurity. In the mining boom, companies were formed, amalgamated and bought-out in a flurry of activity but present records are incomplete. The main sources of information are annual reports of the Department of Land Surveys and Mines in Papua, a few geologists' publications (notably Pinder,1901; Stanley, 1912, 1923; Trail,1967) and a variety of unpublished data. The first traces of gold in New Guinea were'found by Saavedra in 1528. The first gold in Papua was found near Port Moresby in 1878. The next discovery was at Sudest Island in 1888 followed by Misima Island in 1889 and Woodlark Island in 1894. By 1910 the "Murua Goldfield" (Woodlark Island) had contributed over 43% of the total gold yield of the Territory of Papua.

The Henty Gold Mine is a good example of a situation where conditional simulation and optimisation techniques may have useful impact on modelling of mineralisation distribution and ore definition. Much of the gold mineralisation at Henty is concentrated within an alteration zone which is both physically discontinuous and forms only a small fraction of the overall mineralised volume. The alteration units are mappable from diamond drill core and underground workings. Conditional simulation and optimisation techniques for ore definition have found considerable success in the open pit gold mining environment. For many reasons including computational efficiency, lack of consistent geological information, and lack of familiarity with ideas and methods among mine geologists, implementations of these methods in open pit mining have been comparatively simplistic. Modelling is commonly reduced to treating the sample data as a single geologic population. This paper discusses the application of the MP method (a particular implementation of conditional simulation and optimisation) to modelling the distribution of potential ore blocks in the Henty gold mineralisation. The approach allows the mine geologist to model both the spatial geometry of the alteration types and the gold grades associated with each alteration type in a single process. Options allow the geologist to include or exclude underground geological mapping and face sampling depending mainly on the abundance of drill hole sampling and the quality of the face sampling. An optimisation algorithm based on maximisation of profit from mining is used to assist in ore definition.

This paper presents results of an investigation on acoustic emission characteristics of granite, sandstone and rock-like material in the unconfined compression and tensile tests. Both the acoustic emission signature and stress-stain curve are analysed in the experiments.The experimental results show that different acoustic emission characteristics are observed at different stress and deformation stages in unconfined compression and tensile testing. Extensive and unstable acoustic emission changes may be interpreted as indicating failure of the rock.

Human habitation of the Pacific Rim began when mankind began migrations out of its place of origin in the Rift Valley of Central Africa c. 4million years ago. This migration was erratic and largely controlled by advances and retreat of the various Ice Ages which, while limiting advances in areas of intense cold, at the same time aided migration thro-ugh the creation of land bridges as ocean levels declined during periods of glacial advance (Fig.l).Mankind began its trek to the Pacific from Africa across India then north into southern China and south into Indonesia (Fig.2). In part, these migrations stimulated early technological develop-ments to fulfill needs and adapt to environmental conditions; thus, these nomads developed stone and bone tools, animal skin clothing and the use of caves and other simple shelters. The earliest evid-ence of mankind's use of fire can be found at Zhou-koudaian near Beijing, c.400,000 BP.From China, the completion of the Pacific Rim's population can be attributed to the last Ice Age that dropped the ocean level by more than 300 feet and created land bridges about 40,000 BP allowing migration across the Bering Strait into Alaska and to Australia from Indonesia. The American migration reached Mexico about 30,000 BP, and by 6000 BP the occupancy of the Pacific Rim was complete when the first human settlers reached the southern tip of Chile.

Mining professionals recognise the need and application for reconciliation and value tracking. It is necessary however to examine our current reality, and evaluate the following. Do our reconciliations really balance correctly, and are we able to track value effectively throughout processes? If we are honest, in most operations the answer is a resounding no. This means that we are surrounded by fluctuation and deviations that we do not account for and do not understand. This is astounding, because given our level of scientific knowledge and the technological tools at our disposal we should have a good understanding of our environments and be able to manage them effectively. How do we manage effectively if we are surrounded by so much uncertainty? The purpose of this paper is to describe, at high level, the principles of reconciliation and value tracking, to highlight some areas where deviations are introduced into the mining process, and to propose a different approach to the apparent reconciliation and value tracking conundrum. The paper also poses several questions that need to be critically addressed at most operations. Instead of making the same mistakes each month in reconciliations, mining professionals need to acknowledge two facts. Firstly there will be uncertainty that we need to accept, since all our estimates are based on sampling, an orebody is not homogeneous and peopleÆs behaviour will influence the process, etc. Variability will always exist and lead to uncertainty. What is the current approach in the reconciliation process when a deviation occurs and how do we use reconciliation and value tracking to manage and improve our business? The second fact is that we need to stop using reconciliation and value tracking to only measure and report. We need to adopt a new approach to manage mining throughput, where reconciliation and value tracking are enablers to the success of the business. In most mining operations, significant effort goes into planning and measurement for the purposes of reconciliation and value tracking. The importance of accurate and effective reconciliation and value tracking should be to ensure the maximum utilisation of the resource, maximising throughput and enabling the business to deliver a product to its client, of the correct quality and in a timely manner.

In the 25 years since Broken Hill's 75th Anniversary which was marked by an Australasian Institute and Mining and Metallurgy Conference in Broken hill, there have been some significant changes in the role of mines inspectors. This paper updates the information given by the then Chief Inspector of Mines, J.H. Burford, to that 1968 Conference, with an emphasis being placed on mines inspection, although it also reflects changes to mining legislation and regulatory bodies.

PT Freeport IndonesiaÆs copper/gold operation disposes of approximately 222 000 dry metric tonnes of tailings per day via two thickeners. Reduction of the flocculant dosage rates in each of the tailing thickeners has been achieved with the installation of Clarometers«, modifications to the existing operating DCS control strategy and a change in plant flocculant. This has reduced the flocculant consumption rate in the last twelve months by approximately 20 per cent. It has also highlighted the disparity in the settling rates of the two thickeners. Collaborative efforts between Cytec technical site engineers and Freeport operational personnel have made possible the overall gains achieved in the tailings thickener optimisation.
