A combination of the needs of business, employee desires and safety and health considerations is stimulating increasing attention to the time spent by people at work and the timing of that work. Particularly we are seeing: - innovative work schedules for 24-hour mining businesses; and - response from industry to accommodate the needs, even the desires, of employees in return for systems which are more productive and more capital efficient. There appears to be an evolutionary trend for business management to become more sophisticated and responsive to the need for achieving close to best cost work schedules to sustain continuous improvement. The underlying motivating forces driving this trend for improved techniques in organising attendance at, and time spent at work, is the seemingly inseparable combination of technological advance and ever-increasing accumulation of capital. The mining industry has not remained untouched by this thrust for ever-increasing need for best use of labour, to adopt advances in technology and to provide attractive opportunities for putting accumulated capital to work. An essential component of this on-going thrust is a substantial effort by the mining industry to improve the performance of labour by providing most-productive work schedules.

The expansive, open cut iron-ore mines in Western Australia typically experience few days of rain per annum, often amounting to less than 250 mm. Unlike mines where rainfall is frequent, they may be less prepared for extreme rainfall events. Such events can cause erosion, flooding and sedimentation, drainage alteration, spoil and stock heaps wetting and effect slope stability. Such impacts may threaten personnel safety, infrastructure, and production. The CRATER (‘Climate Related Adaptation from Terrain Evaluation Results’) framework collates and interprets a mine’s pre-existing data and semi-quantitative information to assess vulnerability to, and ultimately plan to avoid or minimise, flood-related hazard to infrastructure, people, downtime, environment and revenue. Outputs assist decision makers to design investment strategies for minimising mining operations’ vulnerability to climate. Previously developed for smaller, wetter mines in Queensland’s coal region, the outputs provide a hot-spot map, fault tree analysis and an assessment of the mine’s capacity to adapt. The multicriteria evaluation (MCE) within a geographic information system (GIS), equally suits iron-ore mines’ siteconditions (elevation, slope, drainage, soil and vegetation) to identify critical inundation areas. Hotspot results provide target zones for in-depth fault-tree analysis that, in turn, present a range of sitespecific adaptation options. Rainfall-intensity and the number of rain days since the 1970s have increased over central and eastern parts of the Pilbara Region. While tropical cyclones may become less frequent, they are projected to increase in intensity. Although some parts of the Hamersley Ranges receive more than 500 mm per annum, rainfall in the Pilbara is generally very low. Therefore, experience of the impacts of extreme rainfall events in the constantly changing topography of Western Australia’s iron ore region may be sparse. Minimising potential effects can be proactively assisted using CRATER.

Geological modelling software has brought about a revolution in the communication of complex geo-variables to mining engineers, metallurgists, surveyors and managers. Mine planning and scheduling can now avail itself of a veritable toolbox of enabling technologies.

The Eastern Distributor tunnel is located approximately 24 m beneath the suburbs of Woolloomooloo and Darlinghurst to the east of the central business district of Sydney. The 1.7 km long tunnel will carry three lanes of northbound traffic over three lanes of southbound traffic in a æpiggybackÆ arrangement, with a maximum cross-section 22 m wide by 12 m high.The tunnel is constructed predominantly within horizontally bedded Hawkesbury Sandstone. In the unweathered to slightly weathered state, the rock is typically medium strength (average UCS about 24 MPa), with an average quartz content of 72 per cent.Major geological features that intercept the tunnel route are the Woolloomooloo Fault Zone and two extremely to moderately weathered dolerite dykes. The fault zone intersects the tunnel at about 25¦ to its alignment and comprises a series of discrete faults over a width of approximately 50 m. The overall movement of the fault zone appears to be reverse. The two dykes are the 1 m wide Oxford St Dyke and the 6 m wide Great Sydney Dyke.This paper outlines the site investigations and the interpreted geotechnical model for the tunnel route prior to the commencement of tunnelling. This model is then compared to the encountered conditions. The very good correlation between the expected and the encountered conditions shows the high quality of geotechnical investigation and interpretation.

Recent trends in flotation technology are briefly reviewed. These show that considerable development has been made as the operators, suppliers and technologists have responded to the challenges of the industry. Most of these advances have been based on empirical and phenomenological methods. There is a considerable opportunity to make further advances through a more fundamental, scientific approach. Some of this work is discussed and, although progress is being made on this front, industrial uptake has been somewhat slow. A number of specific issues facing the industry are discussed.

Using the cellular automata computational technique it was possible to simulate the generation and discharge of an iron ore pellet pile inside a direct iron reduction oven, as well as to calculate the reduction degree of the pellets as they leave the oven. It allows simulation of the variation of operational parameters and verify the results of those variations in the pellet reduction degree. The simulated data was validated in two instances: for the dynamics of the pellet flow inside the oven it was used in an acrylic bi-dimensional silo; and data from direct reduction iron literature was used for validation of the pellet reduction. The simulated results were considered acceptable to describe the movement of the iron pellet inside the direct reduction iron oven and to describe the iron pellet reduction direct in the oven.

Investment decisions in the Australian mining industry are often made without awareness of the impact of risk on project outcomes. A fundamental change in thinking is required to move away from the traditional attitude of æcushioning the blowÆ towards a measured approach to project risk. Such an approach involves quantifying and understanding project uncertainty so that investments may be shielded from downside risk while at the same time exposed to upside potential. Communication and collaboration between study teams and corporate financial managers must be improved before the industry can improve its project investment record. Monte-Carlo simulation provides a way to quantify and understand investment risk, but its accuracy depends on how well the variability of input parameters is estimated. Research in this area is currently centred on quantifying uncertainty in mineral resource estimation using new conditional simulation techniques, but a less-rigorous method can be applied in practice to begin the education process and develop the required awareness at board level.

Equity finance provides the most suitable and frequently the only access to capital during the exploration and evaluation stages of resource projects when project risk is at its highest. Investors are prepared to provide equity funds in the knowledge that they are compensated for the higher risk they take on with higher potential returns or sufficient upside potential to justify the higher risk. The context of resource projects which determines the role of equity finance has changed considerably. Prior to the resurgence of the gold price and the development of new mining technology many resource projects were selectively mining orebodies by underground methods frequently with limited reserves proved up in advance of mining. The limited proved ore reserves base and the volatility of the gold price all contributed to a higher risk and higher return investment environment in which the use of equity finance was more appropriate and frequently the only option for capital raising. The financial risk of a resources project can be transferred to an underwriter who makes the commitment to distribute the financial risk between a number of investors. There is also the opportunity for financiers to use a mix of equity and debt finance to allow a company to proceed with the development stage where without such a mix the resource project would not proceed. By using a level of equity finance the project becomes robust enough in its ability to service the debt finance facility and the project proceeds with the equity participants receiving a suitable risk reward return. The liquidity from the establishment of a market for the company's securities enhances further capital raising and generally enables the company to satisfy its financial requirements on more favourable terms particularly during bull markets. The role of equity finance in the management of the financial risk during the exploration, evaluation, development and mining stages of resource projects is summarised in Table 1. In more detail the principal roles of equity finance and the ways in which equity finance impact on the risk management of resource projects will be considered in turn.

Coal dust explosions have occurred in coal mines across the world. The Mitsui Miike Coal Mine disaster in 1963 was an example of how this hazard was not managed effectively, resulting in the loss of 458 lives and hundreds of people sustaining permanent brain injury from carbon monoxide poisoning. Management of the risks for this hazard have been well documented and have been implemented in modern coal mines. A recent trend in some mines has seen the abolition of barriers on roadways on the basis that the risks are being managed by the current controls. These controls include stone dust application, trickle dusters, dust analysis and dust removal. The Zhilingtou Au-Ag deposit is situated in the eastern part of the complexly deformed and metamorphosed South China Caledonian Fold Belt. It consists of seven orebodies that are almost exclusively hosted by biotite plagioclase gneiss of the Precambrian Chencai Group. They form an apparent en echelon pattern in both cross-section and level plan. Three different ore types, based on mineralization textures, have been recognized within the Zhilingtou lode. These are Au-Ag-rich quartz veins, Au and Ag-bearing silicified rocks and Au-Ag-containing altered rocks with quartz stockworks. The mineralization is principally composed of electrum, argentite, pyrite and minor sphalerite, galena as well as traces of hessite and chalcopyrite plus a gangue assemblage of quartz, rhodonite, sericite and chlorite. Fluid inclusions related to Au-Ag mineralization yield a wide range of homogenization temperatures from 110 to 447¦C, with two distinctive peak values at 250-300¦C and 350-400¦C respectively. S30Si values of quartz veins and silicification from the three stages of mineralization range from -0.1 to -0.4%o. The mineralization at Zhilingtou is interpreted as forming by recirculated meteoric water extracting ore-forming elements from metamorphic rocks due to Mesozoic volcano-magmatic activity.

Short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral reflectance of the hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the footwall of the Hellyer Zn-Pb massive sulfide deposit was measured with a portable PIMATM infrared spectrometer. The Al-OH absorption band was used to derive information on the cation composition of white mica. The wavelength range of the Al-OH band from 2194 nm to 2222 nm reflects variation in the number of octahedral Al (Alvi) in white mica from 3.9 to 3.2 (based on four octahedral cations per formula). This Alvi range indicates a substantial compositional variation, covering most of the compositional region between muscovite (Alvi = 4.0) and phengite (Alvi = 3.0). Moreover, the spectral reflectance data show that the compositional variations of white mica are spatially related to the hydrothermal alteration zoning, such that the white mica of more phengitic composition tends to form in the main upflow fluid channels in the centre of the footwall alteration system. The results suggest that the octahedral Al content of white mica, which is spectrally definable by the wavelength of the Al-OH band using a field instrument such as the PIMATM, can be used to map fossil hydrothermal systems and potentially as vectors to mineralisation.

In the pursuit of commercial solutions for environmental issues, individual problems are often identified, considered and resolved in isolation from other environmental matters and always at the end of the cycle û after the problem has been created. Inter-relationships are neglected if they are not seen to obviously impact on a specific problem and the issue at hand is plucked from the environmental landscape and dealt with in total isolation to all else. In a Zero Waste approach to environmental matters, all outputs are pursued as potential inputs. Industrial processes are viewed as a variation on natureÆs theme and opportunity pursued above all else. When viewed from this perspective, industry appears to have forgotten its origins. It has forgotten that it is principally about people. The juggernaut of global trade has forgotten that it is a small part of a big landscape and that its principal participants, people, cannot exist without healthy soil. Commercial activity in all parts of the world relies heavily on the ability of agriculture to produce the necessary inputs for industrial production. The care and nurturing of our soils is fundamental, not only to the survival of humanity, but also to the economic systems that support that humanity and to the industry which profits by it. Actual levels of domestic recycling in many countries around the world seldom reflect the 90 plus per cent desire to recycle recorded in surveys conducted by local authorities in almost every country. If the desire to recycle is far removed from the end result, why is it that the systems provided are so ineffective? It is obvious that what we do need is a recycling system that both engages and rewards the participant and stimulates the innate desire to support the environment. A recent trial in New South Wales, Australia, demonstrated that by giving individual households credits for recycling organic wastes, not only will contamination levels fall dramatically, but increased yields, improved soil structure, improved land values, reduced fertiliser costs and increased water use efficiency give the farmer good economic reasons for purchasing and applying quality composted product. By underpinning and securing the agricultural community, we secure the future of industry. The æCity to SoilÆ project linked the economic on-farm benefits of compost use with reduced contamination through the provision of rewards paid for by the purchase of product by the farmer.

Asteroids contain an abundance of valuable resources such as: nickel, cobalt, gold, platinum and rhodium. Whilst the consumption of mineral resources on Earth continues to deplete, meteoroids have the potential to become a significant source of minerals. Even though the minerals content of asteroids may be relatively high, the valuable minerals are more likely to be only a small portion of the total ore present in the main body. The ores must, therefore, be processed to extract the metals of interest from the waste. Existing terrestrial technologies rely on manipulating the physical and chemical properties of minerals. The application of these techniques to asteroids processing, however, is not straightforward due to the presence of different conditions such as zero gravity and lack of water in space. During the last decade the proper training of operating and maintenance staff has been recognised as directly contributing to the successful startup and continuing operations of a metallurgical project. During this period Bechtel has assisted clients in the design, development and implementation of such training. The clients have been located in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Africa, China and North America. The programmes have addressed mobile and fixed plant operations and maintenance in coal, copper, gold, borax and other mining environments. The level of sophistication has varied from highly structured and documented instruction to less formal, yet controlled efforts to reorient and enhance the skills of experienced workers to training personnel with no previous work experience. Many lessons have been learned, some easier than others. This presentation will recount the elements of various projects which enhanced and detracted from the cost-effective achievement of the goals which training was

The current approach to the design of fill, as a structural component in a mining system, is based on traditional usage, previous experience, empirical rules and preconceived ideas. This approach does not permit the relative economicsof the various possibilities to be evaluated, retards introduction of new materials or processes, and results in fragmented fill research effort.A rational approach to the design of fill is proposed as a means of overcoming these disadvantages.This is based on five components:(a) statement of functions of fill,(b) definition of modes of fill response,(c) criteria of satisfactory performance,(d) analysis of fill response,(e) specification of required fill properties and methods of obtaining them.An assessment of each component indicates that the adoption of this rational design approach will require research effort in categorising modes of fill response and in defining criteria of satisfactory performance.

A common and cost-effective method for post-mining landscapes is to construct linear hillslopes with a break in the hillslope at appropriate distances to reduce hillslope length and resultant erosion risk (Figure 1). The break in slope occurs at a point that has been found by local experience to be appropriate for the materials and climate. Further enhancement of the linear hillslope may be assisted by surface treatment such as ripping (Saynor, Lowry and Boyden, 2019) (Figure 1). Firstly, ripping introduces surface roughness which breaks up flow paths reducing flow velocity thereby reducing erosion potential. The current talk of risk management as a separate discipline and management function is like earlier imposition of Quality Control (QC) as an overlay on shoddy production management. Risk management is vital, but is integral in the way we marshal our staff, make decisions, then monitor and review and make crucial secondary decisions. New leaders must not assume that hiring experts ensures good decisions. It is only the essential step one. The worst company I worked for had more expertise than the best. The difference was in culture and decision-making processes. Failed feasibility studies, persistent technical factions in a company that cancel each other, heaps of expert consultant reports piled up like a dump of bricks, even great but half-managers in large and small companies cancelling expertise at their disposal, are the worst manifestations. Just daily foul-ups are common even amongst smart people. We miners have made a great industry but are content to drift far below excellence, even where that word is bandied around. All the management literature and management courses will not right the situation û we have been sending budding managers to this good stuff for two generations and the effects are worthwhile but marginal. A few key ideals, ideas and slogans are not the way. These make inspiring books that work about as long as the Christmas spirit does in the real world. What we need is a coachesÆ manual and a standard of the essential package of culture and work processes that make excellence possible and show how to maintain it long term. It has not been written until now because most managers want to remain dilettante amateur managers without the discipline that creates excellence. First, believe excellence is possible and worth any effort; then commit to it.

Analysis of the 2001 Australian census data set can be used to gain a detailed insight into the trends and levels of employment in different industry sectors. There is a common perception that employment of geoscientists within the mining industry and indeed across all industries has decreased significantly. However, the data shows that the number of individuals stating that they are geoscientists employed across all industries has decreased by only five per cent from 5336 in 1996 to 5067 in 2001. Within the mining industry (Australia and New Zealand Standard Industrial ClassificationÆs û ANZICÆs mining class), the number of geoscientists employed has decreased by ten per cent from 2701 in 1996 to 2441 in 2001. These figures, while showing a decrease, do not reflect the magnitude of the decrease commonly perceived. However, further analysis shows the number of geoscientists employed in mineral exploration may have decreased significantly more.

Many coal mine operators have responded to economic pressures by massive investment in machinery to reduce unit costs. To sustain the increased production which must justify the expenditure it is essential to know the resource in great detail months or even years in advance of its extraction. The required detail includes variations in composition and any lateral disruptions to the seam which night affect production. As Wilson (1985) has pointed out, a day's production loss can mean half a million dollars income forgone, and an unexpected major fault can mean a shutdown of weeks. Traditionally, seams were probed by surface drilling on (typically) 250 or 500m centres, and by horizontal drilling from sithin'the seam. Core was analysed chemically. The new generation machinery cannot tolerate the risk attendant on such widely spaced sampling, but the costs of much closer sampling rapidly become prohibitive.

The Norseman-Wiluna Belt (Fig.1) is a richly mineralized (production 1900 tonnes Au), Archaean greenstone belt, up to 800km long and 200km wide, which forms the major part of the Eastern Goldfields Province within the Yilgam Block. The Belt evolved ca. 2700 Ma ago as an oblique-slip mobile belt between flanking portions of an older greenstone terrane. Volcano-sedimentary successions in the Belt represent two distinct tectono-stratigraphic associations. Sequences of metamorphosed caic-alkaline intermediate to silicic volcanic rocks interlayered with tholeiitic basalts probably represent the remains of a dissected Archaean volcanic arc (or arcs), and sequences composed dominantly of ultramafic to mafic lavas and intrusions, with minor interflow tuffaceous, sulphidic or cherty sediments are interpreted as remnants of the floor of an ensialic marginal basin (Barley and Groves, 1988). Ultramafic volcanism at Kambalda has been dated at 2692 ¦ 2 Ma (Claoue-Long et al., 1986). The dominantly volcanic associations are locally overlain by coarse clastic sedimentary succes- sions. The Belt is also typified by major north- to north-northwest-striking fault systems, shear zones, and tectonic lineaments, many of which are traceable for more than 300km. As well as defining the boundaries of the belt, these structures have accomodated much of the regional strain and acted as conduits for hydrothermal fluids during deformation, metamorphism and mineralization. As a result, most of the epigenetic gold deposits in the Belt occur in subsidiary structures related to these fault systems (Eisenlohr et al., 1988). Deformation involved oblique compression resulting in a closely spaced network of low-angle faults (thrusts) as well as upright folds and oblique- to strike-slip faults (Archibald, 1987; Veamcombe et al., 1988). This was accompanied by regional metamorphism and granitoid emplacement. At Kambalda, regional deformation and metamorphism were synchronous with the emplacement of the Kambalda Granodiorite which has been dated at 2662 ¦ 4 Ma (Hill and Compston, 1986), approximately 30 Ma after volcanism.The tectonic history and style of deformation of the Norseman-Wiluna Belt are similar to those of Phanerozoic oblique- slip mobile belts at continental margins, which are also a major source of hydrothermal gold mineralization.
