The question of prediction and prevention of dynamic events û rock bursts (RB), tectonic rock burst (TRB) and mining-induced earthquakes (MIE), induced by large-scale mining, are discussed. The mine itself and the host geological environment are taken as a natural-technical system (NTS) whose evolution is characterised by alteration of the adaptation-bifurcation (catastrophes) periods. So, to predict TRB-MIE means to predict the limiting NTS states that are determined from the NTS geological monitoring data, and to prevent the said events means to control the processes of rock deformation and failure within the critical zone. The study considers particular examples of how TRB-MIE-events are predicted and prevented in apatite mines, Kola peninsula, Russia.

South Africa has a long history of rockbursts, some 100 years. During this time much research and many developments have taken place in the country to limit the occurrence of rockbursts, and to mitigate their effects. In this paper I shall present a personal view of what I consider to be important achievements, and contributions made. Some of these are: planning of stope layouts, and the use of strike barrier pillars; recognition of energy as a key factor, the use of the energy release rate ERR as a layout planning criterion, and development of MINSIM for calculation of ERR and stope planning; sequential grid stope layouts; use of backfill for stope support; and, development yielding support elements, and dynamic testing of stope and tunnel supports. The record shows the establishment of a rock engineering research powerhouse over a 40 to 50 year period and, unfortunately, the complete breakdown of this capability in the subsequent 10 years. Oxy-ACETYLENE system of welding and cutting is at present practised in two forms, which may be described as the high and lowpressure systems. In the high-pressure system the two gases, oxygen and acetylene, are delivered. to the blow-pipe under pressure from properly constructed trade cylinders. Oxygen cylinders are in two sizes, each containing 100 and 200 cub. ft. of gas respectively. These cylinders are charged to a pressure of 120 atmospheres, or 1800 lb. per sq. in. approximately. The acetylene cylinders are made in one size as far as the writer knows, and contain 200 cub. ft. of acetylene gas at a pressure of 10 atmospheres. Each cylinder is provided with a valve and connection for attaching a regulator to "break down" the high pressure in the cylinders to the necessary low working pressure of the blow-pipes, and to deliver the two gases at a constant pressure irrespective of the variable pressures in the cylinders. These regulators can be adjusted down to as low as 1 lb. and are provided with two pressure gaugesone reading the contents of the cylinder in atmospheres, and the other the working pressure in lb. per sq. in. The high-pressure, or "two cylinder" system is compact and can readily be transported from place to place in the works. For this purpose the two cylinders are mounted on an easy-running 4-wheeled truck, which the operator and assistant find no difficulty in manipulating. In the low-pressure system the two gases are delivered to the blow-pipe, one from the oxygen cylinder and the other from the acetylene gas generating plant, which consists of the following:Generating cylinder, half filled with water, into which the cathoide is plunged. The largest surface coal mine in North America requires complex materials handling infrastructure to fulfil the highly variable quality specifications of its contracts. These diverse demands, reflected in the arrival of numerous customer trains every day, necessitate the integration of information in every stage of production. To meet this goal, quality measurement, train line-up and mine planning processes are being integrated into local and remote control rooms. The effectiveness of such a system can only be measured by comparing decisions that are made with, and without, each of the individual integrated control systems. Traditionally, mine controllers use their experience, intuition or a variety of trial-and-error spreadsheets to determine the ideal materials handling flows needed to achieve the correct quality. These balanced decisions are complex since many factors must be considered such as the mine plan, fleet costs, quality variability and others; consequently mine controllers usually have widely varying success between crews.An evaluation model was developed to assess the impact of a decision support system (DSS) integrated in a control room for controlling the coal blending process. To this end, an ARENA-based simulator representing the whole production process can be used to pull performance and current materials handling settings directly either from the real-time systems in the mine, or from historical data. In this way, the same shift (breakdowns, cycle rates, etc) can be simulated and performance compared. Different settings of the DSS, in terms of what information is displayed and the methods for doing so, can be tested for effectiveness. The historical data are extracted directly from a corporate data warehouse, without altering the everyday working databases. At the same time, the simulator writes its results back into the same data warehouse structure, allowing the same KPI reports to be used to measure simulated shifts.

The New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources has, since 1974, administered the Derelict Mines Rehabilitation Program (DMRP) to reduce the environmental impacts of abandoned and orphan mine sites. The application of the DMRP is presented in case studies of sites from the South Maitland Coalfield featuring residual drainage of acidic and saline water in a semi urban and rural community setting. The acidity here is typically derived from iron oxidation in shallow underground coal mine workings and in surface emplacements of coal washery reject materials. This paper presents summary information on AMD investigation, monitoring and rehabilitation. The experiences of community expectation, stakeholder consultation and peer review are discussed.

The undeniable fact of life in the next 25 years will be the increasing difficulty of the physical conditions of Australian orebodies facing future miners. We are all familiar with names such as the 3000 orebody at Mt Isa, Hilton, Century, Macarthur River, Cannington, and Ernest Henry. These projects represent a significant. proportion of the planned underground mine development in Australia. Moreover, many of these new orebodies are an order of magnitude more difficult to mine and process than their predecessors. Extraction will be from deeper and potentially more hazardous working environments. Occupational health and safety considerations will place unprecedented demands upon mine operators and technology providers of the future.

Mineral processing plants have become large and complex, generally through progressive expansions. Addition of a pre-crushing stage to conventional Semi-Autogenous-Grinding (SAG) and ball mill - crushing (SABC) circuits has introduced a complex materials handling system coping with +200 mm particles. Application of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) and implementing hybrid comminution circuits (ie, HPGR-SAG mill) requires proactive control of the feed size distribution to each unit. Application of Vertical Tower Mills (VTMs) and other fine grinding equipment to achieve a finer grind size, while maintaining the throughput, requires splitting the feed evenly between parallel units. Many of the conventional comminution circuits (ie, staged crushing and screening followed by staged ball milling) must deal with the transition from open pit ore, which is generally altered and soft, to underground ore, which is intact and hard, requiring existing crushers to produce a finer product to unload the ball mills.This paper presents common process improvement opportunities which have been identified during a number plant process reviews conducted by the authors in Australian and international operations. The operation of comminution circuits to known and accepted standards, which is explained in this paper, could improve the performance of circuits by between 5 and 10 per cent, generally at no capital cost and often at a lower operating cost. The performance improvement can be realised as throughput increase, a finer product size, or reduced operating costs (ie, energy saving, low maintenance, less consumables).Process optimisation opportunities presented in this paper include: enhancing materials handling and storage to avoid segregation; standard operation of screens to reduce misplaced materials; proper feeding arrangement and control of crushers to increase their utilisation; preparing proper feed for SAG mills to reduce grind size; splitting the feed evenly between parallel equipment to improve utilisation, and controlling operation of classification units to improve energy utilisation.CITATION:Yahyaei, M and Powell, M S, 2018. The Porgera mineral deposit in Papua-New Guinea contains gold as finely divided, probably submicroscopic (1 um) particles dispersed in a pyrite sulphide matrix. Only 25-30% of the gold in pyrite can be extracted by direct cyanide leaching and fine grinding the pyrite does not increase gold extraction significantly. This work is concerned with the application of alkaline leaching at atmospheric pressure to oxidise the pyrite prior to gold recovery by cyanidation. The paper presents and discusses results of a comprehensive set of testwork using sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide alkaline media. Best results, at 60-70% gold extraction, were obtained with sodium hydroxide systems.

In earlier studies along a mining region recipient (the river VormbScken, northern Sweden), the fraction of certain trace metals recovered in the particulate phase has been found to increase with increasing concentrations of particulate iron. This study was conducted to see if the pattern could be reproduced by adding minor amounts of ferrous iron, simulating groundwater inputs. When the iron is oxidised in the near neutral river water, it will form iron oxyhydroxides and precipitate. Trace metals may be either co-precipitated along with the iron, or adsorbed onto the freshly formed precipitates. If this is the case, such a mechanism may be incorporated as a part of a final polishing step in a mine drainage treatment system based on natural attenuation processes. The experiments were performed at 0¦C and 22¦C, on authentic river waters collected during the winter and summer of 2002, respectively. In order to investigate the influence of particles and bacteria initially present, filtered river waters (4 solution were added to the experimental beakers, increasing the iron content of the waters by 0 - 1.5 mg/L. The oxidation and precipitation processes were followed by means of filtration (0.2 ¦m) for up to seven days. In order to be able to compare the experimental results with the actual field situation, on both experimental occasions, surface water samples were collected also from three stations situated along the river. The samples collected were analysed for iron, calcium, and trace metals by AAS and ICP-MS. The iron oxyhydroxides formed in the experiment did not influence the partitioning of As, Cu, and Pb to the same extent as the particulate iron encountered along the river appeared to do. Rock mechanics involves characterizing the mechanical properties and behaviour of rock material and the natural discontinuities of the rock mass, while rock engineering is concerned with specific engineering circumstances, for example, how much load will the rock support and whether reinforcement is necessary. Rock engineering models developed depend considerably on the input data such as boundary conditions, the properties of rock material and rock mass. Correct evaluation of these properties frequently requires laboratory and in-situ tests, supplemented with a high degree of experience and judgment. Accordingly, since 1974, the ISRM Commission on Testing Methods has spent considerable effort in developing a succession of the ISRM Suggested Methods (SMs) for different aspects of rock mechanics and rock engineering with the contribution of a number of working groups and cooperation of some other ISRM Commissions. This paper emphasizes the need and importance of standardization of rock testing methods within the context of the ISRM SMs, gives a guideline for developing ISRM SMs and finally discusses on some implementation and contractual issues associated with rock testing and experienced in practice, and briefly introduces main future trends in rock characterization, testing and monitoring. Airblast overpressure legislative limits can be extremely difficult to meet throughout Australia, which has by far the most stringent limits of any nation in the world. As the difficulty in meeting the limits is strongly dependent on the scale of mining, it is not surprising that the Australian coal mining industry is experiencing particular difficulties in meeting these limits. Eight full scale overburden blasts have been modelled with respect to overpressure impact for a strip coal mine, involving both dragline (cast) blasting and pre-strip (non-cast) blasting. Overpressure levels in the range 100 to 125 dBL have been measured at distances varying from 2.4 to 5.7 km, and modelling has successfully estimated both the amplitude and shape of overpressure waveforms to within an average of 1.2 dBL. Typical errors of prediction are around 0.6 dBL. This accuracy of prediction has been achieved by considering the impact of only the face holes, and the accuracy of prediction of both shape and amplitude suggests that it is these holes which dominate the environmental overpressure impact at distances in the range two to six kilometres, for cast and pre-strip blasting operations. Modelling has been based upon the Elemental Overpressure Wavelet proposed by Richards and Moore (2002), incorporating actual hole coordinates, actual delay timing, and assumed delay scatter statistics. The incorporation of delay scatter statistics has been particularly significant, and allows the determination of the range over which the peak overpressure levels are expected to vary. To date, modelling has considered only the use of conventional pyrotechnic delays, though simple adjustment to the scatter definition would allow estimation of overpressure levels, and their variability, with electronic delays.

It has ten operating mines and processing plants, with operations in most States of Australia and in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the United States. The exploration division is active in,other parts of the world, including Europe and South America. RGC produces gold, copper, tin, coal and mineral sands. RGC is typical of companies in the mining industry in that by contrast to the typical pattern in other industries, it is necessary to have systems to handle a variety of different types of operations, a range of size of operations, and operations in remote locations.

The passage of a vast array of new State and Federal environmental legislation over the last couple of years has required many mine operators to sharpen their focus on environmental requirements. Established requirements, such as environmental impact assessment, minimising disturbance and rehabilitation must now be complemented by mine environmental management plans. These may not only require regular monitoring of mine operations and detailed forward planning to prevent or reduce environmental harm caused during mine operation, but annual updating. It is likely that in future these plans will be required to incorporate general principles such as pollution prevention, sustainable development, waste minimisation and conservation of biodiversity and ecological integrity.

The selective recovery of gold and silver from solutions containing other metals, such as copper, is possible using AuRIX«100 resin in conjunction with the Gekko Resin Column. Selectivity is driven by controlling the solution pH, which enables activities such as loading copper, gold and silver and then selectively stripping copper before gold and silver. Alternatively gold and silver can be loaded and the copper left in solution. The selective loading of gold while reducing the silver loading has also been demonstrated, opening the possibility of producing high grade gold dorT from high grade silver pregnant leach solutions. This paper reviews the AuRIX«100 resin and Gekko Resin Column Technologies, discusses the uses of AuRIX«100 in the recovery of gold and silver and the chemistry relating to several projects for which AuRIX«100 is being tested.

Over the past decade most, if not all participants in the resources sector have been involved in initiatives to improve margins, reduce costs and improve business profitability. In many cases the initiatives undertaken have fallen short of their stated objectives, and in some cases have resulted in the terminal decline of the underlying business. In reviewing why many such initiatives fail, a common theme of arbitrary cost reduction and a focus on minimising cost as opposed to maximising value and cashflow emerges. This paper proposes a structured process that allows mine owners and managers to develop an understanding of their cost structure and optimise production and cost outcomes from the business. The broad objective of cost optimisation is to create value by getting more out of existing and new assets by focussing on operational areas, particularly production and maintenance. The paper uses practical examples to highlight the application of cost driver trees as a mine improvement tool.

Substantial progress has been made over the last ten years in the development of uniform national and international standards covering the definition, estimation and public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves. Agreement between the major participating countries has been reached, which includes the requirement that a Competent Person prepare and approve publication of mineral resources and reserves. Most national regulatory organisations have accepted the new standards and have included them in the rules that must be followed by mining companies operating under their jurisdiction. These developments are the result of a concerted effort on the part of professional societies, national regulatory agencies, international organisations, and many dedicated individuals. The historical development of these standards is summarised in this paper. Accepted definitions of mineral resources and mineral reserves are discussed, as well as the definition and role of the Competent Person. Additional effort is needed before the international standards are fully understood, accepted and followed by mining companies, regulatory agencies, the investment community and the general public. Steps being taken toward development of an International Code are outlined.

UNLIKE coal mines, in which some form of artificial ventilation is rendered necessary by gases given off by the material mined and is also enforced by the mining laws of all countries, metalliferous mines have almost entirely relied on natural ventilation, viz., that due to the difference in temperature between the outside atmosphere and the mine air. In small mines natural ventilation has proved sufficient, but as mining proceeds at a greater depth, and where large ore bodies arebeing attacked the writer is of opinion that some means of artificial ventilation will be rendered necessary if only from an economic standpoint.The Broken Hill Proprietary Mine was one of the first metal mines to introduce a scheme of artificial ventilation on a large scale. In order to render the working conditions of the semi-friable stopes of Block 12 and the lower levels of Block 11 morecomfortable for the men at work in these places, in 1903 it was decided to install a fan to thoroughly ventilate these stopes. The fan chosen was a Capell double-inlet fan beltdriven from a steam engine: this engine was later on replacedby an electric motor. The fan was put in commission at the latter end of 1904; its principal dimensions are as follows: Length 6 ft. 6 in., diam. 7 ft., diam. of inlet 4 ft. 7i in. The fan is reversible, though this is a rather misleading term, asthe direction in which the fan blades revolve is not reversed...

A statistical investigation of folding at Mount Isa disclosed similar patterns in both the shales and the "silica dolomite" zones. Analysis of these patterns yields 3 groups of folds fully developed north plunging folds, fully developed south plunging folds, and flexuresrepresenting stages of development of folds. Interpretation of results indicates that a regional force from a southerly direction was responsible for the folding.The general pattern of shearing is allied to that of folding, with the exception of bedding-plane shearing. Many shears resulted from continued application of force on folds which ruptured after overthrusting. Other shears resulted from rupture of the more incompetent shale members, without associated folding. The shear pattern is consistent with the theory of a regional force from a southerly direction.INTRODUCTIONThe notes on folding and shearing presented in this paper are part of a current study of the structural geology of Mount Isa.FOLDING 1Measurement of FoldsInvestigation of folding underground involved the measurement of plunge, strike and dip of the axial plane, and the order of magnitude of each fold, together with its location and the rock type. The total number of folds measured was 701, of which 411 occurred in shale areas and 290 within the "silica dolomite" zones. All folds measured are located on main levels, from 7 level to 13 level inclusive. The sections of the mine involved are the Black Star, Black Rock and Racecourse. Detailed investigation of folds on the upper levels (4, 5 and 6) has not yet been done, but observations there suggest...

Thrusting is well documented in the Finisterre/Sarawaget moun- tains, the Kainantu-Waf district and in the Highlands between the Kubor Anticline and the Ramu Valley, Papua New Guinea. The thrusts trend NW and involve rocks ranging in age from Permo-Triassic to Plio-Pleistocene. Evidence from the Finisterre/ Sarawaget mountains demonstrates that a major phase of thrust- ing commenced in Pliocene times and continues today. Palaeostress analyses is a sensitive technique for assessing the kinematic history of faulting. The picture gained from the Finisterre/Sarawaget mountains, the Kainantu district and be- tween Kundiawa and Keglsugl is simple, involving a north to northeast ol. Local complexities between the upper Chimbu Valley and Brahmin indicate extension on a NW-N trend. The simplicity of this anlaysis, which accords with seismic and geo- detic strain data, shows that the major faulting in Papuan Orogen is no different from that in the Papuan Fold Belt; that the Papuan Orogen and the Papuan Fold Belt together form a young thrust- fold complex; and that such structures as the Kubor Anticline may be fault-bend folds. Recognition of the obduction of the Finisterre/Sarawaget reef/ volcanic complex over the Australian plate, the gas seeps in the Ramu Valley and foothills of the Finisterre/Sarawaget Mountains, oil seeps in the Goroka and Kundiawa regions, and our interpre- tation of the PNG Orogen as part of the Papuan Fold Belt indi- cates unexpected probability that the PNG Highlands are pro- spective for hydrocarbons.
