The LaModel program was initially developed in 1993, and it is used to model the stresses and displacements in thin tabular deposits such as coal seams. It uses the displacement-discontinuity variation of the boundary-element method with a simplified laminated overburden model and because of this formulation, it is able to quickly and effectively analyse large areas of single- or multiple-seam mines. Over the last couple of decades, LaModel has been used by many mine engineers and researchers for improving pillar designs and mine safety, and it has been continually updated to add functionality and improve its ease of use and accuracy. The present LaModel can calculate seam displacements and overburden, multiple-seam and total seam stresses, pillar safety factors, energy values, roof-bending stresses, fault effects and surface subsidence. It can automatically generate the mine and overburden grids from AutoCAD drawings, and it includes wizards for automatically generating Bieniawski strength coal pillars, easily calibrating the overburden properties to observed abutment stresses and calibrating the gob material to expected gob loading. The carbon neutrality continues to require reduction of carbon usage in ironmaking and steelmaking processes. Specially, it is expected that the hot metal ratio (HMR) in the steelmaking process should be reduced essentially. Unfortunately, the reduction of the HMR in converter can bring about poor environment for nitrogen removal from molten Fe. From this situation, nitrogen prediction model has been developed to understand the fundamental of behaviour of nitrogen and quantitatively interpret its content changes in the converter process. Thermodynamic and kinetic approaches were improved based on existing mathematical model and attempted to predict nitrogen content in realtime by combining process data. In present study, heat supply from the oxidation (mainly carbon and silicon) and CO evolution in the converter are considered, and scrap melting due to the heat transfer from the molten Fe to the solid scrap charged in the converter also be considered.

Technological development is accelerating in the mining industry (Abrahamsson and Johansson, 2021) and in large parts of the world there is an increased environmental awareness (United Nations, 2015). This can mean both challenges and opportunities. The mining industry has long been criticized for its adverse environmental effects. However, there is now a lively discourse about the role of mining in facilitating the green transition towards sustainable development. Mining is increasingly recognised as a prerequisite for the green transition, by supplying key raw materials to enable, for example, digitisation and batteries for electric vehicles. The green transition not only amplifies the demand for metals and minerals but also intensifies pressure on the mining sector to assume greater responsibility for environmental and societal welfare (Dehaine et al, 2020). New technology, such as digitisation, automation, and remote control, play a crucial role in advancing towards more sustainable mining practices. Despite the expanding role of advanced technology, human involvement will remain important in the extraction process (Rogers et al, 2019), but new technology will change how miners do their work, which in turn will lead to changed competence requirements for miners (Herbert and Hidalgo, 2021) and increased need for further education. Given the significant shift towards sustainable mining, it is important to study how these changes may affect the work, competences, further education and skills of miners as human expertise will continue to be critical in the extraction process. Consequently, there is a need for proactive research to prepare for the inevitable changes and implement measures to support miners through this changeable period to ensure a smooth transition that protects miners’ safety and working environment. This extended abstract explores how new technology will affect the need for further education of miners in the future.

The seventies was a decade of intensive hydrometallurgical activity, firstly for copper recovery, then uranium, and finally gold. In comminution, semi-autogenous grinding was applied to uranium and gold ores. In leaching there were extensive investigations into pressure and in-situ systems, and into ammonia and chloride leaching processes. Solvent extraction became a major unit operation for copper recovery. New reagents and equipment were introduced. There was a resurgence of ion exchange for uranium as low grade sources were tapped and continuous ion exchange systems developed. Carbon-in-pulp technology came to the fore for gold recovery with the development of desorption and electrowinning systems. Electrowinning was widely applied for copper in conjunction with solvent extraction. There was a continued move to greater mechanisation and higher current density. There were important developments in solid-liquid separation such as high capacity thickeners, belt filters and sand filters. Many of these trends will continue in the eighties. Interesting new developments can be expected.

A distinct zonation occurs in the nature of submarine volcanic activity associated with westwards propagation of the Woodlark spreading system into continental crust. Olivine tholeiites (Type I MORB) flooring one spreading segment in the Eastern Sector of the Western Woodlark Basin are accompanied by more evolved "ferrobasalts". Basaltic andesites and Mg-poor andesite-dacites occur on axial and flanking seamounts respectively. In the Western Sector, Mg- and K-rich olivine andesites occur in a rift valley and on an axial seamount near the tip of the propMr/8 tig rift. Observed correlations between 6Sr ratios (0.7028-0.7041), REE patterns and K contents imply a complex petro- genesis with the relative importance of mantle heterogeneity and crustal contamination difficult to resolve.

Adaptive mineral processing has to rely on spatially predicted information on primary geometallurgical parameters, like phase composition, size and shape distributions of grains from various phases, portions of value elements in different grain types. Naively, one would predict these parameters geostatistically and select an optimal processing for the predicted structure. This is suboptimal, due to various kinds of non-linearities in the problem. First, some primary geometallurgical quantities themselves are measured in non-real scales, like compositional or stereologically distorted geometric information. Standard geostatistics has to be replaced by compositional and geometric geostatistics, involving complex transforms and restrictions. Further, only partial and uncertain information is available, introducing a stochastic character to the optimisation problem. Moreover, many response variables leading to costs, outcomes and eventual effects of later processing depend non-linearly on the primary geometallurgical parameters, which implies that the final monetary value is not estimated unbiasedly by kriging. Finally unbiased linear prediction (such as kriging) is not the best method of prediction for decision making. The conditional expectation of the monetary values is needed instead. The impact of these problems is explained in this paper, with simplified examples, and a first approach to a general solution is proposed. A great part of the research on froth flotation of gold ores deals with ores containing gold associated mainly with sulphides, resulting in a largely accepted view that what takes place with sulphides (eg pyrite) in a flotation cell also happens to gold particles. This paper is concerned with the influence of some inorganics (CuSO4, CaO and NaCN) on gold particles flotation, using ethyl or amyl xanthates as collectors. The bench-scale tests were carried out with ground quartz and gold particles mixtures. Some findings stemmed from this study: flotation of the gold particles of size 0.16 mm was efficient adding only frother; larger gold grains were better recovered by the use of stronger collector CuSO4 did not seem to be an activator for gold; the addition of NaCN up to 200 g/t or CaO up to 2000 g/t did not depress the gold grains when amyl xanthate was used as collector although with ethyl xanthate the gold depression was verified.

In exchange for issuing minerals rights from the Crown Mineral Estate to explorers and miners, the Crown expects a æfair returnÆ on this investment, ultimately for the benefit of all New Zealanders. In the case of mining permits, this return is in the form of a tangible asset û royalties from mining activities. But for exploration activity, the return sought by the Crown is an intangible asset û information. The information obtained serves three purposes û in helping Crown Minerals to set work programme conditions during permit allocation, for monitoring the performance of permit holders in accordance with permit conditions, and for archiving and making available for future interested explorers and other parties. Difficulties can arise during the allocation and monitoring process when either party has more information than the other that is not shared. To date not enough emphasis has been placed on the intrinsic value and content of the information generated by explorers and the importance this information can have in the exploration process leading to new mineral discoveries. For attracting exploration investment, the quality and availability of such information, combined with other geoscientific data, is a fundamental determinant for potential explorers when choosing to explore in a global market, and strongly defines the mineral prospectivity for a country. This is something the Australian States and other jurisdictions seeking mineral investment learnt long ago, and who now provide substantial amounts of cheaply or freely available packaged geoscientific datasets, increasingly over the Internet. To have a vibrant mineral exploration industry so that the benefits from the mineral estate can be realised for all New Zealanders, a shift in emphasis to the value of its mineral information base itself is required. Such an approach is befitting of a true Knowledge Economy, and would enable the Crown to make better-informed decisions regarding utilisation of its natural resources.

How do you initiate closure planning for a mine site that is on the doorstep of a major community without generating the extremes of panic or complacency? That is the question that is faced by Australia's largest gold mine, the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Super Pit in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM's Community Relations Manager, Danielle van Kampen, will reveal the lengthy closure planning process that is in train to alert yet not alarm the community about the future of the Super Pit and to generate discussion on issues of importance. What will happen to the 'big hole' that generates both mining and tourism dollars for the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder as its anticipated closure date of 2021 comes closer? How do you communicate a constantly evolving closure date? Although the process may generate more questions than answers, the project will be discussed at length and with the added benefit of independent community recent research in the form of the public 2009 Closure Consultation and the KCGM 2010 Social Impact Assessment. Chemical species distributions in rock sequences can be modelled using Gaussian processes (GPs) to predict the weight percentage between known data points. This method can be improved by dividing the modelled area into regions of different mineralogy. In the context of many iron ore deposits, marker shales give the initial guidance of where these regions may lie. These shales give rise to distinctive peaks in the natural gamma downhole logs, which are conventionally identified by hand. A GP method has been developed to automate this task.Once the appropriate boundary has been located on the basis of shale occurrences, chemical assays from exploration drill holes are used to find the exact boundaries of interest. These boundaries divide the drill hole stratigraphy into regions of different mineralogy, each of which display their own distinct correlations between the main elements and oxides (Fe, SiO2 and Al2O3). Iron ore shows a negative correlation between Fe and Al2O3, but in banded iron formation (BIF) there is a positive correlation between these species. Similarly, SiO2 and Al2O3 have a positive correlation in the shales and ore but a negative correlation in the BIF. Correlations obtained within ore-, BIF- and shale-dominated regions are therefore better than those obtained using the entire log and can be used to improve the results obtained when modelling.

More and more coal in Australia is extracted by underground mining methods especially by longwall mining. These methods can be particularly sensitive to relatively small-scale structural discontinuities and variations in roof and floor rock character. Traditionally, information on these features has been obtained through drilling. However, this is an expensive process and its relevance is limited to the immediate neighbourhood of the boreholes. The geological uncertainty remains. Seismic surveying, especially by 3D seismic, is an alternative tool for geological structure delineation with growing credibility. In fact, it is one of the most effective geophysical methods available for identification of geological structures such as faults, folds, washouts, seam splits and thickness changes which are normally associated with potential mining hazards. Seismic data even can be used for stratigraphic identification. The information extracted from seismic data then can be integrated into mine planning and design. In this paper, we demonstrate computer aided interpretation techniques for maximising the information from seismic data and illustrate the ability of seismic reflection methods to resolve localised geological features. Both synthetic and real seismic data obtained in recent 2D and 3D seismic surveys from Australian coal mines will be used. Compared with results obtained with drilling programs, the structural definitions from seismic are of unprecedented quality.

The Hazelwood Mine (HM) commenced operations in the 1950s and was originally operated by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) prior to it becoming privatised. ENGIE, the current owners of the Hazelwood Mine ceased operations in 2017 and have since transitioned the site into the rehabilitation and closure phase, which is to encompass a full pit lake as part of the final landform. A key aspect of HM closure is the maintenance of long-term stability of the pit slopes to deliver a final landform which is safe and sustainable, particularly given its proximity to critical public receptors. The Princes Freeway, which is the primary access route to the Latrobe Valley (LV), and the Morwell Township are both located immediately to the north of the HM. Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS or the Convention) (United Nations (UN) Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, 1982) establishes a comprehensive regulatory framework for the conduct of deep seabed mining (DSM) activities of mineral resources in the Area (defined in Article 1(1) of UNCLOS as ‘the seabed and ocean floor and subsoil thereof, beyond the limits of national jurisdiction’). Under that framework, DSM activities can only take place in the Area pursuant to an approved Plan of Work in the form of a contract with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) (the Authority), a 168-member international body created under UNCLOS to administer the Area. Private contractors can undertake DSM activities if they are sponsored by Member States of UNCLOS, providing a dual system of international and domestic regulatory control and oversight for activities in the Area.

The steel industry is one of the global leading CO2 emitters, accounting for approximately 7 per cent of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. In 2022, the world produced 1878.5 Mt of crude steel. About 70.8 per cent of the world’s crude steel was produced by integrated steel mills through the blast furnace and basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) process, while the remainder was produced largely by mini mills using electrical arc furnaces (EAF). Compared with gas-based DRI and scrap-based EAF processes, the direct CO2 emissions from the BF-BOF process and the coal based DRI and EAF process are significantly more, as both the processes rely heavily on fossil fuels, such as coke and pulverised coal, to provide energy and reduce iron oxides. Hydrogen is very reactive and reduces iron oxides to metallic iron without generating CO2. Therefore, substitution of hydrogen for fossil fuels in these processes presents a good opportunity to significantly decarbonise the steel industry. This paper will first discuss the thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics of hydrogen and carbothermic reductions of iron oxides and then examine the behaviours of different ore types present in Australia iron ores during hydrogen reduction.

Continuous improvement using six sigma methodologies commonly follows the DMAIC methodology of define, measure, analyse, improve and control. A key requirement in the use of this approach is to ensure that data is trusted, validated and contextual. In today’s production environments it is common to find disparate technology comprising the system architecture and highly customised interfaces between the various technology layers. This complexity often leads to inaccurate data presented at the operations management layer or worse, data that is not trusted. Identifying defects and making corrective actions cannot be efficiently carried out unless trusteddata can be easily obtained with a production context. It is also common to find that disparate systems of this nature present information in multiple ways and through multiple presentation systems. This paper discusses how the use of web-based technologies in an integrated technology stack can aid the accessibility, accuracy and trust of data used in decision-making and also how a unified visualisation environment can lead to greater operator efficiency.

The selection of the ore haulage system is one of the most crucial decisions made in the development of an underground mining project. The haulage system is, once selected, one of the components of a mine that defines its ability to respond to changes in mining inventory and the market conditions for its products. Over the last decade, in Australia at least, this selection process has largely centred on the debate over the merits of shaft and decline truck haulage. Little attention, if any, was given to the application of inclined conveyor haulage as a real alternative to the shaft and truck haulage. This is despite well established precedents for its application in the underground coal industry and some limited applications in underground metalliferous mines. This paper seeks to explore the case for the application of inclined conveyors as a legitimate ore haulage system for underground mines. The case for conveyor haulage is illustrated by an overview of the application of conveyors at some existing operations, and discussion of what conveyors have to offer as a mine haulage system and the issues that are associated with them. Material drawn from the feasibility studies for NewcrestÆs Ridgeway mine and Telfer Deeps Project is presented as case studies that considered selection of inclined conveyor haulage. The purpose of these case studies is to highlight the value of impartially approaching tasks of this type with a robust plan. This plan should be able to respond to issues identified as the task progresses towards the objective of finding the right solution for an ore haulage system.

Queensland Mines Limited operates a small uranium treatment plant at Nabarlek in the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve, some 265 km due east of Darwin. It was the wish of the local Aboriginal people that the ore be treated over an eight year period and that no township be constructed in Arnhem Land. Due to these wish- es it was decided to house employees and their families in Darwin and fly the employees to the minesite for work rosters. A singleman's style camp only was constructed at Nabarlek. To satisfy the Aboriginal people's wishes all recreation time is spent offsite thus lead- ing to a roster system whereby employees spend three distinct periods of 6, 6 and 4 days on- site, broken by recreation periods of 3, 4 and 5 days in Darwin, during each 28 day period. Employees are divided into four opposing rosters, which allows at any given time for approximately half the workforce to be onsite and the other half on rest and recreation leave in Darwin. This method of staffing has generally proved to be most satisfactory although at times problems arise, in terms of both product- ion and social effect not normally encountered when operating within more conventional circum- Stances.

The assessment of the face velocity of blasts is important in the analysis and subsequent improvement of blast performance. POWERWAVE RADAR is a new tool which will make the collection of this data easier for blast researchers. The data collection technique ensures that a large amount of face velocity data is collected from a blast, and describes the velocity characteristics of the face at a new level of detail. This results in a greater understanding of the effect of drilling and blasting parameters on blast performance. Several case studies are presented which illustrate the collection technique, the type of data generated and how the data is used.

Filters are used in water treatment and hydrometallurgical process plants for objectives such as generating a dry spadable solid, pumpable high density slurry or high purity filtrate. The priority objective of every polishing filter, sometimes also termed clarifying filters is high purity filtrate and these are found in many diverse industries and even different applications within the same industry.To generate a high purity filtrate, process designers have the choice of many different polishing filter products, but in reality very few polishing filters are based on fundamentally different filtering concepts.This paper reviews the technology merits of well-known and the more recently developed polishing filter products and aims to assist metallurgists and engineers with the selection of an appropriate polishing filtration technology for pregnant liquor filtration and other process applications, plus a guide to best practice.CITATION:Shipard, S, 2013. This will not onlyimprove performance but with safety issues becoming more and more prevalent, the need for the introduction of mechanisation technologies to mining applications is essential. Ongoing developments are occurring in almost every field, ranging from basic developments to specialised mining. Mechanical tunnelling and shaft sinking have set the standards regarding safety, profitability and environmental protection. Different machine types and working principles have been developed to suit the geological and hydrological requirements of tunnelling projects worldwide. Continuous activity in research and development leads to constant optimisation of tunnelling performance.
