Sustainable closure of coal mines in Australia to a safe, stable, non-polluting condition remains one of the industry’s biggest environmental and social challenges. A significant proportion of mines in the Bowen Basin of Queensland have dispersive spoil. Based on an estimated area of 20,000ha and a rehabilitation cost of AUD$100,000 to AUD$150,000/ha, the instantaneous rehabilitation liability for the Bowen Basin alone is estimated at AUD$2 to $3 billion.Dispersive spoils present problems in post-mining rehabilitated landforms due to increased potential for surface and tunnel erosion, compromising the ability to achieve fundamental mine closure objectives of a safe, stable, non-polluting and self-sustaining post-mining landform (Minserve, 2004). Dispersion results in clay particles being mobilised and transported in water, even at low flow velocities (So et al., 1998; Minserve, 2004), and blocking of soil pores, resulting in surface sealing, crusting and reduced permeability (DNR, 1997; Vacher et al., 2004) which, in turn, further increases runoff (Dang et al., 2018).CITATION:Dale, G, Reardon-Smith, K, Thomas, E, Bennett, J, McCallum, L and Raine, S, 2018. The carbon-carbon dioxide reaction is the rate determining step in industrial processes such as the rotary kiln direct reduction process for iron ores. The use of brown coal as a reductant in the rotary kiln process has been shown to result in higher throughputs and lower kiln temperatures. No experimental data has been reported on the effect of coal type or the use of brown coal chars. Methods of carbon-carbon dioxide reacti- vity measurement are discussed. None of the methods have been related to direct reduction practice. No standard test has been developed to assess the reactivity of brown coal chars to carbon dioxide. For routine comparative work the gas analysis method of Okstad and Hoy appears to be the most suitable although some modification to the experimental conditions is required. For detailed kinetic studies direct weighing techniques are to be preferred. The factors affecting the reactivity of brown coal char to carbon dioxide are reviewed. Numerous factors such as the origin of the coal, pretreatment and ,physical and chemical differences have been found to affect the reactivity of brown coal chars but no data has been reported on the effect of coal type on reactivity to carbon dioxide.

The purpose and current practice of cable trusses in underground coal mines is briefly outlined and details of various cable truss designs are presented. The main part of the paper describes the in-situ performance of cable trusses installed as secondary supports in gateroads and recovery roads of longwall coalfaces. The performance analysis is based on the results of in-situ monitoring carried out at a number of sites at two underground coal mines within Australia. Truss performance has been assessed as load developed in relation to roof convergence, face position and time. Additionally, the influence of strata conditions, installation pattern/density, roadway layout and geometry have been taken into account. An analytical model has been developed to predict truss loads. The principal variables are listed and the basis of the model is described. Based upon behaviour observed in the field the model has been progressively upgraded and validated against measured performance. Guidelines on truss performance and factors which influence it are presented and the implications of these to the use of cable trusses is discussed. Possible methods for improving truss performance in certain strata conditions are outlined and some comments are made on the value of cable trussing compared to cable bolting in these Situations.

Mine planning processes are continuously evolving, increasing in complexity, and are required to be developed in shorter timeframes, often missing important steps in the process. Underground coal mines are also moving into more challenging environments, with the more favourable resources having been exhausted. In addition to traditional mine planning processes there is an increasing level of complexities associated with parallel systems including the preparation of Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) compliant estimates (JORC, 2012 and Guidelines Review Committee, 2014) or seeking critical regulatory development consent to undertake mining. There is a clear link between geotechnical considerations and success of mining operations, and therefore it is essential that such considerations are elevated in both status and priority. It is obvious that geotechnical considerations are paramount in any mine, however it is imperative to accept that such considerations, and the collection of information relating to such, are undertaken from the onset of any mining project. In May 2000, Kanowna Belle Gold Mines (KBGM) carried out a detailed Truck versus Shaft Haulage Study. The study showed that whilst the shaft option had many operating cost benefits the capital costs were too high, therefore the truck option was selected. In May 2001, the concept of achieving æshaft typeÆ benefits without the capital costs was floated. This is achieved by separating the hoisting of ore from other mining activities. The general concept is that material from underground is transported to a central location and then transported to the surface by a special truck fleet, thus removing the dependency between trucks and loaders, providing the mine with surge capacity and decreasing operating costs. At KBGM these advantages have been gained by installing an ore pass system with a plate feeder at its base that directly loads trucks. This provides the mine with a haulage system with enough surge capacity to remove the interdependency between trucks and loaders. The plate feeder is situated just off the decline which creates the opportunity to use larger more reliable, lower cost trucks. A number of truck types were considered for the truck loop including Elphinstone AD55Æs which are the truck type being used on site prior to the truck loop, CAT 775EÆs and power trailer road trains. This paper covers the philosophy behind the truck loop, the truck selection process, project installation and commissioning, people issues and the benefits expected by the operation. As of May 2002, the project is nearing completion, with decline haulage expected to commence in July 2002.

Economic and technical reasons forced the mining industry all over the world to increase the unit size of mineral processing equipment. in large flotation cells, this development leads to problems in areas of air dispersion and keeping solids in suspension. Outokumpu, an operating mining company, designed and developed a mixing mechanism for large flotation cells at its own concentrators and also studied problems related to tank design. Ideal conditions for flotation can only be achieved if the flow pattern created by the mixing mechanism fits well into the tank configuration and the risk of short circuiting is minimized. In large deep flotation cells, four different zones can be found which improve the behaviour of large cells when compared to small cells. Selectivity is increased and in some cases final concentrate grades can be produced from the rougher cell. The largest units have also been used as final cleaners in some installations. When modernizing old plants by installing fewer larger flotation cells, immediate and substantial savings in power consumption are achieved. Additional power savings are made in pumping costs because of simpler circuit design and decreased circulating loads

This paper describes the programing and specification requirements which affected the choice of excavation methods on the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop (M.U.R.L.). The various methods that were chosen are briefly described, and the three most used are compared in more detail. Excavation rates, cycle times and other statistics are compared for full face tunnel boring, full face drill and blast, and heading and bench using a road header excava- ting machine. The length of tunnel excavated is sufficient to enable meaningful statistics to be presented and the significant specifi- cation and geological factors are described to weight the statistics where necessary for purposes of comparison. Average tender prices are given for excavation and primary support to indicate the reimbursement sought by contractors to carry out this type of tunnelling.

Potential hlghwaJl mining reserves in Australia are large, but geotechnical and operating conditions are quite different from those where highwall mining has evolved in the USA. In order to achieve safe and effective resource recovery, equipment and procedures should be developed to penetrate 250 m in the Australian mining environment. This paper identifies key auributes to be incorporated in such machinery and methodology. These suggestions are intended to promote discussion on innovations to satisfy Australian requirements for highly productive, safe and environmentally acceptable techniques.

Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited, Laronde Division, operates the deepest single-lift shaft in the western hemisphere. The initial Penna hoisting plant was designed for a production rate of 1800 tonnes per day (t/d) from a 2240 m deep shaft. Exploration success, while sinking the shaft, led to a decision in 1998 to increase the production rate to 4500 t/d of ore from a loading depth of 2200 m. The new production rate was achieved by increasing the size of the rope and reducing the rope static factor from the existing 5.0 required by regulation to a static factor using the formula 25 000/(4000 + L) contained in a draft document that would eventually become SABS 0294 in South Africa. The formula permits Laronde to use a static factor as low as 4.0. The upgraded Penna hoisting system is the first hoisting plant outside of South Africa to meet the South African requirements. This paper describes the conversion of the hoisting plant to the lower rope selection factor in the year 2000 and the operating and maintenance issues experienced since then.

Modem blast initiation systems allow users many options for connection and application in the field, and have resulted in more innovative and complex uses of sequencing to influence blast outcomes. However, no tool existed which allowed the blaster to easily and quickly assess the effect of different options. The original requirement was for a computer program which allowed the easy input of blast patterns and the associated initiation sequence, and then permitted the evaluation of different options with respect to established criteria such as the number of holes per delay and angle of initiation. The implementation of this goal saw the development of the SHOTPIan blast sequence design software, with particular emphasis on an easy-to-use menu driven interface and visualisation of the blast sequence. Extensive trialling during development saw the incorporation of additional features requested by industry such as the ability to import from established mine design software packages, and further features such as the calculation of burden relief times. Case studies of the use of the program are provided, where the rapid evaluation of a number of options has enabled blast results to be optimised. The iron ore mining operations carried out by Goldsworthy Mining Limited at Golds- worthy, Shay Gap and Sunrise Hill, in the Pilbara region of the North-West of Western Australia, are unusual insofar as the ore reserves occur in a number of widely separated and relatively small deposits, requiring deep mining below the water table, and even below sea level at the Goldsworthy pit. This paper has been prepared to describe some of the problems associated with these deep open cut mines, and the technology employed to overcome them, in order to provide an efficient and economical operation. The problems discussed are: 1. Development of the Dewatering System for the Goldsworthy Mine. 2. The Stability of Pit Slopes at the Goldsworthy and Shay Gap Mines. 3. Development of Diesel Electric Trucks for Lonq Uphill Hauls.

The considerations which led to the decision to_ install discs at the Dampier Pellet Plant of Hamer ley Iron Pty. Ltd. are described. Initial testwork showed that the ore could be ground dry in open circuit to a Blaine index of 2500 cm2/g and that it pelletized readily. The various design criteria including diameter, slope, speed, motor size, depth of sidewall, feed point and water spray location were then determined. Plant performance after commissioning is described including the various problems encountered and the modifications since carried out to overcome them. The main problem was quickly identified as disc feed rate control. Various bin and bin feeder modifications were tried to overcome the effects of the fluidising characteristics of the dry ground ore. Other factors found to affect disc operation are ore size distribution, additives and operator competence.

This paper presents updated interpretations of controls on mineralisation in C Deposit and highlights structural features that influence the geometry of mineralisation domains used in resource estimation. The Area C mining lease is located in the central Hamersley Province, ~100 km WNW of Newman, Western Australia, and contains resources of approximately 1100 Mt of Marra Mamba and Brockman iron mineralisation. C Deposit is located within Area C, on the northern limb of the Weeli Wolli anticline, and mineralisation is hosted predominantly in the Mt Newman Member of the Marra Mamba Formation. Production from C Deposit began in August 2003, following mining of a 950 000 tonne bulk sample in 2002. Recent mapping in the bulk-sample pit and updated interpretations by BHP Billiton geologists have highlighted the significance of structural controls on mineralisation in C Deposit and their influence on the thickness of mineralisation, which ranges from 20 to 80 metres. Structural controls on the geometry and continuity of mineralised domains include south-dipping thrust faults that developed along the Mount Newman/West Angela contact, folds associated with thrust fault development, steeply dipping stratigraphic contacts in the hanging wall of the thrust faults, and gently north-dipping stratigraphic contacts. Thrust faults and folds in C Deposit are significant for two main reasons: their formation resulted in the thickening of the main ore-hosting units in the Mount Newman Member; and faults and folded stratigraphic contacts provided conduits for supergene metasomatic-enrichment processes that produce high-grade iron mineralisation.The implications of this interpretation for the definition of the resource estimation domains are discussed, and suggestions are made for a better integration of geology into the data acquisition and estimation process.

Valuable data for geotechnical interpretation and integration into effective Australian underground mine planning may often be available, yet is not always fully appreciated or utilised, particularly in the early stages of mine planning or in due diligence studies. There may be considerable benefits associated with early prioritisation of geotechnical evaluation and impact on mine planning. Unidentified, misinterpreted, or ill-defined adverse geological and related geotechnical resource characteristics can pose significant business risk to underground coal projects and operations. Preliminary resource definition in the early conceptual mine planning stages attributes significant focus (entirely warranted) on resource quality and structural geology constraints. Yet detailed geotechnical data analysis and interpretation, which may have a substantial down stream impact and sensitivity with respect to future mine planning strategies, at times is given lower priority, or scoped and resourced in the later stages of a bankable feasibility study. Through extensive mine planning experience and observation of downstream process impacts, it has been found there is often data available for geotechnical analysis that does not readily stand out or is not adequately understood or utilised, available at the early (conceptual) stages of mine planning. Part of the issue may be that exploration geologists are not necessarily experienced geotechnical engineers and do not necessarily recognise or understand all important parameters. Subject to appropriate application of experienced professionals data can be manipulated to provide key geotechnical hazard assessment at minimal cost, and provide a framework for understanding and optimising the mine planning process. Although there is no single prescribed strategy for resource evaluation from a geotechnical perspective, potential business risks and mitigation approaches can and should be adopted at the conceptual mine planning stage. There has been a recent focus in the metals industry to provide a reporting framework for geotechnical classification of mining projects. This paper outlines the strategies and gives examples of key analyses adopted in mine planning and discusses the relative merits of adopting a reporting framework as a tool for geotechnical classification in mine planning.

Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past 10 years has been 5·5 per cent compared to a world average of 4·1 per cent.Over the next 10 years growth rate is expected to increase to 6 per cent per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry.By the end of the 19705 natural gas is expected to supply more than 9 per cent of Australia's primary energy market. Coal will supply 40 per cent and petroleum products 47 per cent. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but will make only a small contribution in the period.Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970s and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude oil, while supplying 60-70 per cent of requirements in the initialyears, will need regular and sizable additions if they are to keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated that new discoveries will need to approximate ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date.

I am sure that you are- all familiar with Airborne Magneto-meter Surveying so I shall-spend only a brief moment describing the instrument and techniques and the remainder of the allotted time-on-modern-application-of the instrument.The Airborne Magnetometer used by Aero Service in AUstralia-was designated by Gulf Research and implements the saturable-core flux-gate--principle. The first magnetometers developed'weremagnetic-balances and depended on the counter-torque principle but these required a stable platform and hence are not applicable to airborne surveying. Other methods include the induction methods, the Hall Effect methods, magneto-striction methods., Deflectioh. of,free.electrons, the proton-precession methods.Some: of these are applicable to airborne surveying. As a matter of-fact the nuclear precession magnetometer is the one generally used in the Satellites because it has been miniaturized most successfully.The Gulf Magnetometer is the one most generally used in mineral and petroleum exploration because its sensitivity is sufficient for the problem and-data and instrument techniques have been worked out and standardized.

Feasibility is a value improvement process for projects. At any stage in project development, a feasibility study can be undertaken, but although the scope generally remains unchanged the extent of detail and level of accuracy usually increases with time. The main scope elements are a business definition, project description and an execution plan. The studies are designed to assess the potential of the project and to secure funding for on-going examination. Invariably, the investigations loop back to earlier stages to establish more appropriate development criteria but a critical stage is reached when a project construction decision is requested. This feasibility study requires very detailed presentation and analysis to a higher accuracy for the owner(s) and their potential lender(s).

The Tarnagulla Gold Project in Central Victoria, Australia, was developed and operated by Reef Mining NL between 1994 and early 2000, producing 53 000 ounces of gold from the Nick OÆTime Shoot, a single narrow vein shoot structure within part of the larger Poverty Reef, with a strike length ranging from 30 m to 60 m. The ore shoot was developed over a vertical interval of 190 m, using a small cross-section decline and small, mechanised equipment. Various stoping methods were employed including mechanised cut-and-fill with a single boom jumbo, hand-held mining using airleg drills and rope scrapers, and small uphole retreat stopes using a line of sight remote operated LHD to recover a crown pillar. Experience during stoping showed that airleg drilling and rope scrapers gave much better dilution control than diesel equipment. Innovations included a low-cost hydraulic fill system. Due to the small scale of the deposit, the feasibility studies, planning and permitting for the mine were based on very limited drilling information; however, the mine was brought into production within two years of the discovery. While the mine made an operating profit, it failed to fully repay capital at the low gold price then prevailing. Applying the lessons learned from the operation to optimise the access and stoping method, the project is re-examined at todayÆs gold price and operating costs. Central Victoria has the potential to host many similar small deposits. The authors were respectively Non-Executive Director and Resident Manager for Reef Mining NL when the mine was operating.
