Discrete vein modelling presents an innovative geology driven 3D modelling method for quantification of vein hosted mineral deposits, with far reaching potential for critical mineral supply and low impact resource extraction. By integrating key geological drivers with advanced discrete fracture network modelling, the DMX protocol (launched in 2019) converges to a more realistic representation of complex vein systems in three-dimensional space. The approach insights greater geologic reasoning in distributing mineral grades where vein boundaries are already defined. This presents a viable alternative to existing modelling and estimation methods and has important implications for mineral resource estimation and reporting. Further implications are discussed, where the enhanced understanding of complex orebody characteristics can potentially be used in optimising mining and mineral processing, supporting more sustainable and efficient mining practices.

The link between geostatistics and Theory of Sampling (TOS) is examined again in view of new findings made while trying to compare predicted sampling variances and estimated grades (using geostatistics) on the same material, and this provides an important consistency requirement whenever calculations are made that involve both theories in a comparative way. Diamond cores and drill chips provide the only direct physical evidence for ore containing rocks. Early characterisation of cores and drill chips is important as it provides critical information for downstream processing. Traditional characterisation techniques include visual logging by a geologist or analytic and spectroscopic methods but they are time consuming and can miss some important textural or geomechanical features.The goal of this work is to evaluate the application of image analysis to iron ore cores and drill chips and to suggest improvements to existing core-scanning and chip monitoring systems. Two samples of massive ore differing by their mineralogy and texture, as well as two different batches of drill chips, have been imaged and analysed. Results are compared in function of the imaging system and the classification algorithms.As a conclusion, despite the necessity for more testing and improvements in calibration and lighting, it is obvious that image analysis technologies can bring a lot of useful information in the perspective of a geometallurgical mapping of the deposit.

Over the past 15 years, the mining industry has begun to incorporate the concepts of sustainable development and sustainable mining practice across the life cycle of mineral operations. This requires addressing economic issues, community impacts and concerns and environmental protection, and is captured in part by the phrase ‘design for sustainability’ (McClellan et al, 2009). Over the same period, the industry has seen a gradual decline in ore grades for many mineral commodities. As a result, large volumes of tailings and mine waste rock are being produced around the world, and it is expected that the annual production volumes of these materials will increase, even if there is not a significant change in the demand for materials.Another related thread of change has been the realisation that societies need to move away from linear economies (raw materials, production, consumption, disposal) towards more circular ones. This will help societies become more resource efficient, which is defined by the United Nations Environment Programme as reducing the total environmental impact of the production and consumption of goods and services, from raw material extraction to final use and disposal. The goal is to create more with less and deliver greater value with less input. Circular economies require thinking in terms of the waste hierarchy (reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle, recover, landfill).The challenge is that the waste hierarchy was originally designed to address embodied mineral content in products rather than mine waste and tailings generation. It will need to be reconsidered in a mine life cycle context, focusing on a value-based conception of waste (Van Ewijk and Stegemann, in press).In parallel to these changes, it has remained an imperative in the mining industry to dispose of these waste materials as economically as possible while protecting the environment. Single handling of these materials has been the main target, which reduces the life cycle costs of their management but may make reuse of waste and tailings technically more difficult or economically infeasible.This presentation explores a rethinking of the large volume earthen material waste issue at mines. The underlying theme is that some or all of these materials can be valuable resources for the future that can positively contribute to sustainable development. These resources can offer economic gains to firms, communities and societies; contribute to environmental well-being; enhance social interactions with the previously mined landscape if handled properly; and, with proper policies in place, reduce governance commitments. Each of these topics will be briefly explored. Ore and coke of various size fractions (1 to 11 mm) were packed in a column (146 ó) and resistance to air flow measured under a range of conditions. Results have shown that layered charging results in an interface having essentially a directional structure the thickness of which is directly proportional to the coke and ore size ratio and whose flow resistance exceeds that of the coke layer many times its thickness. Friction factor - Reynolds number plots showed large positive departure from the Ergun equation for all components investigated whilst functional analysis and that in terms of bed constants, showed a strong dependency of the pressure gradient on bed properties and the actual particle size as well as the size ratio. It is also shown that pressure gradient in mixed beds follows previously reported behaviour and that a directional interface offers higher resistance to flow than a mixed interface having the same volumetric ore/coke ratio. Significance of results to practice is discussed.

Mining is an international business and vital contributor to national and global economies. It depends on the trust and confidence of investors and stakeholders for its financial and operational well-being (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), 2016). The Social Licence to Operate (SLTO) is an increasingly multifaceted and multistakeholder risk that can impact investment decisions. Community challenges to broader political and economic decisions have given rise to protest delaying or stopping projects or closing mines and has led to loss of life (Ernst and Young, 2016). Some governments are now giving greater powers to stakeholders to make the final decision on approving mining and metals activities (EY, 2016). With billions of dollars in project investment at stake, ongoing engagement, collaboration and effective communication with stakeholders is crucial and mutually beneficial solutions are increasingly expected (EY, 2016). It is therefore essential that the industry communicates the risks (and opportunities) associated with investment effectively and transparently in order to earn the necessary level of trust with investors and stakeholders to underpin its activities (CRIRSCO, 2016). The effect of the presence of ore pulp on the adsorption rate of gold on activated carbon has been studied. A substantial reduction in the rate occurs when the pulp is present. The reduction in rate appears to be caused by two effects: permanent carbon pore blocking by ore particles and temporary shielding of the carbon particle surface, slowing gold access to the carbon due to the physical presence of the fine pulp. There is no significant effect arising from the presence of a pulp viscosity modifier even for conditions when mass transport dictates the loading rate of carbon in clear Solution.

The tendency of the concentrate to ignite was studied using four techniques, namely, laminar flow furnace, fluid bed, thermal analysis and boat-in-furnace. Exothermic activity occurred at two temperatures: minor activity in the vicinity of 200¦C, major activity at 330-350¦C. The low temperature reaction was due to the ignition of a small amount of free sulphur while the major activity was associated with the ignition of the sulphide minerals, notably pyrite. To avoid ignition of the sulphide minerals, the gas temperature should not exceed 300¦C and the oxygen content of the gas phase should be as low as possible. It was shown that little of the arsenic in the concentrate entered the gas phase during drying.

After reviewing the many excellent papers being delivered here, it is apparent that we are all concerned with the same general subjects of commodity agreements, international cartels, and anti-trust problems as well as the impact of governments on resource management and minerals pricing. Accordingly, as a relative newcomer to the mining business, I feel that my most meaningful contribution can be made by taking a more philosophical look at the future of our system of democratic capitalism. Unfortunately, governments the world over seem intent on jeopardizing the high standards of living resulting from the Industrial Revolution and furthered by the emergence of its by-product, capitalism. This tendency is particularly germane to the basic natural resource field, since government regulations, controls, and intervention in mining far exceed even the constraints normally imposed on hard-pressed consumer-oriented businesses. Increasingly, many governments seem to feel that natural resources no longer belong to private individuals but rather are the property of the state to be developed in a regulated manner and usually in a way directly contrary to the functioning of the free market system.

Today there are many different techniques of soil remediation used in Australia and throughout the world. This paper considers the thermal desorption remediation technique and, in particular, the application of high temperature filtration to the process. The thermal desorption technique involves the treatment of hydrocarbon (oil, petrol, etc) contaminated soil. The process involves heating the soil in a retort or kiln to drive off the volatile organic contaminants. The exit gas stream from the retort is subsequently passed through an after burner to thermally oxidise the hydrocarbons. This technique produces soil and combustion gas streams which are free of hydrocarbons. Due to the heating and agitation of the soil within the retort, soil particles become entrained in the hot gas stream. To avoid the blockage and fouling of the system's interim ductwork and the afterburner, high temperature filtration technology has been applied to remove these soil particulates without cooling the gas Stream.

The extractive industries response to community engagement due to social and political pressures in the 1980s and 1990s was the starting point of development leading to the modern function of corporate social responsibility.Challenged by communities who have greater access to information, demand greater transparency and responsibility of corporate organisations and who possess greater awareness of the communities they participate in, the mining sector faces another step change in how it approaches and integrates corporate social responsibility, transparency and engagement.Mining is seeking reserves of lower grades, in more sensitive environments and in countries with minimal transparency and governance. Not only are the locations changing but so to the stakeholders to engage with and issues to contend with. An increasingly savvy opposition, including not just the ‘green hippies’ but the Gen-Ys interested in the wider sustainability debate and Baby Boomers moving to life style environments, are now questioning mining’s behaviour and encroachment into ‘their space’. Issues including effect on lifestyle amenity, property value, energy efficiency, social provision; concepts such as ‘doing more with less’, participatory engagement, increasing transparency and balancing economic, environment, cultural and social aspects are becoming the norm.The traditional model of supporting local communities, communicating plans and providing employment, community investment and indigenous support programs is not enough. Our industry faces challenges on multiple fronts. It must now be able to address these from a personal/community perspective if it is to remain relevant within communities and play a role in addressing the global sustainability issues.This paper draws on corporate social responsibility trends, integrated functions and implementation approaches through the application of activities within Newmont operations across Asia Pacific.The approach presented works on the philosophy that communities do not necessarily have to like what we do, but should be able to identify and recognise the way in which we involve them in decision making, communicate our intentions and respond to issues.

In order to study conditions under which SiO(g) may be formed in a blast furnace, equilibrium phase diagrams were constructed for the combustion of high and low ash cokes with oxygen-enriched blast and oil injection under conditions of high and low raceway pressures. Free energy minimisation techniques were used to calculate the composition of gaseous and condensed phases. Where coke ash is assumed, for simplicity, to comprise Si02 only, the coke can be comple- tely gasified, mainly to SiO and CO, under restricted conditions of coke to blast ratio and at temperatures greater than 1600 - 1650¦C, depending on system pressure. The formation of SiO(g) is partially suppressed by the introduction of alumina into the ash, because of the formation of solid and liquid alumino- silicate compounds. The minimum temperature for complete silicon gasification is raised to about 1700¦C. The results of the equilibrium calcula- tions are related-to actual raceway conditions. It is proposed that virtually all silicon in the coke ash is gasified such that, on condensation, it affects hot metal chemistry and slag properties and secondly, that the effects will be greater with higher ash cokes.

It is a common misconception that the grant of mining tenure, whether it be an Exploration Permit, Mineral Development Licence or Mining Lease, will entitle the holder to access all land within it in order to explore or mine. The ability for miners to access their tenure in order to undertake activities is critical to the industry. While significant time and energy is quite rightly dedicated to resolving native title and cultural heritage issues before the commencement of mining operations, the same cannot always be said for addressing potential impediments that arise as a result of the overlap between mining and other tenures. Miners should be aware of the overlaps that occur with other tenure and the impact of these overlaps on the minerÆs ability to explore or produce from the area. The existence of an overlap with petroleum tenure, nature refuges, national parks, wild river areas or reserves such as aboriginal land leases are all likely to have an impact on the minerÆs ability to access the area and conduct activities. In some instances, such as an overlap with petroleum tenure, Queensland legislation encourages the miner to reach agreement with the holders of the overlapping tenure. However, in other instances, such as an overlap with a national park, mining tenure is unlikely to be granted at all. This paper summarises the impacts and impediments that arise as a result of overlaps of tenure that are likely to affect mining operations. It also provides examples of how these impediments can, if possible, be overcome under Queensland legislation.

Highwall mining commenced in the Appalachian region 50 years ago. With innovative equipment design introduced in more recent times, penetration distances over 300 m are now commonplace. It is only in the last three years that highwall mining has become part of the Australian coal industry. Geotechnical evaluation is an integral part of the Australian procedures, and although still being refined, has already proven its worth. Statutory guidelines have also been prepared for operations in Queensland. This paper explores trends in equipment design, geotechnical prediction, operating techniques and statutory requirements with regard to highwall mining Australia's coal deposits. A quick assessment guide to assist in the evaluation of potential sites is included.

As open pit mining of a deposit deepens, the cost of extraction may increase up to a threshold where transitioning to mining through underground methods is more profitable. This paper provides an approach to identifying an optimal depth at which a mine should transition from open pit to underground mining. The value of a set of candidate transition depths is investigated by optimising the production schedules for each depth’s unique open pit and underground operations. By considering the sum of the open pit and underground mining portions’ value along with the cost of transitioning corresponding to each candidate transition depth, the optimal transition depth can be identified. The optimisation model presented is based on a stochastic integer program that integrates geological uncertainty. As an input, the stochastic integer program utilises a set of several stochastic simulations that represent equally probable scenarios of the mineral resource. This group of simulations describes the uncertainty in the deposit, while the optimiser aims to maximise value based on discounted profits of both the open pit and underground components of the deposit.CITATION:MacNeil, J and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. The ignificant advantages are suitability of the ame preparation for both optical emission and -ray spectrometry, a complete elemental overage for the range 5bcg/g to 100%, and the recision and accuracy of the methods are om.parable with the standard chemical.methods hich have been superseded in the authors' boratories. The proposed methods become ore attractive and economical as more prehensive information is sought.

As a result of the explosion in the 512 panel at the Moura No 2 mine in 1994 the role of the ventilation officer (VO) to submit sealing plans (on behalf of the operator/underground mine manager) has become one of the key duties of the VO of an underground coal mine in Australia. The intent of a sealing plan is to document the controls used to manage the build up of flammable concentrations of gases, and for these controls to be reviewed by the industry regulators. These sealing plans have brought a large amount of focus onto the sealing process and served the industry well. The legislation does not define sealing, or when it begins, but throughout the industry typically sealing plans are submitted 30 days prior to the last seal being constructed. This practice appears to have originated from the Moura 512 panel being a standing bord and pillar panel and where the explosive gas mixture could only occur after it was sealed. However, since the Moura disaster the industry has become dominated by goafing style longwall mining. Goafing panels differ from standing bord and pillar panels in that they typically have an unventilated goaf that can potentially contain an explosive mixture from start-up. This was recently highlighted by the explosion and fire on Longwall No 1 Tailgate at the Blakefield South Mine in 2011. The author ponders whether the industry should revisit sealing plans to focus on the core hazard and define that sealing begins when flammable concentrations of gases are created. Although defining when mine sealing begins is the key outcome of this paper, the main point is that VOs and industry regulators need to clearly understand what can occur in the atmosphere of underground coal mines. Froth flotation is the most commonly used separation technology in the mineral industries. Given the complexity of the pulp and froth phases as well as the multitude of operational parameters that influence flotation performance, purely fundamental models with strong predictive capacity are limited. As a result, accurately modelling modifications to an existing flotation circuit are challenging, particularly when using empirically-derived models from a different operating configuration. Despite these complexities, a recent publication by the authors (Huang et al, 2022) has shown that flotation rates can be accurately predicted from a first-principles model that incorporates hydrodynamic parameters (eg pulp density, superficial gas velocity, feed flow rates etc), surface chemistry parameters (eg contact angle, zeta potentials and surface tension), and size-by-class liberation data. Circuit simulations using this model were shown to be effective in predicting experimental graderecovery curves from the size-by-class mineral liberation matrix. Since the model is derived from fundamental characteristics of the flotation system, it can be used to simulate alternative circuit configurations with varying degrees of recycle. Conventional flotation circuits are operated in a closed-circuit configuration by routing the cleaner scavenger tails (CST) back to the rougher feed to provide an additional opportunity to recover the slow-floating particles. This widely-used flotation strategy has been under constant debate, and several researchers have provided evidence that open circuit configurations provide higher separation and better circuit control (Konigsman, 1985; Bulatovic et al, 1998; Thompson, 2016). Recently, Finch and Tan (2021), used linear circuit analysis to show that open circuit configurations have a fundamental advantage when stage recoveries are high. Given the limitations of these prior studies, the objective of the current work is to further evaluate the merits of the open circuit configuration through a detailed circuit analysis and simulation study incorporating the first principles model described above.

Social licence to operate is not a new concept for the mining industry, referring to stakeholder approval or acceptance for the activities and impacts of a project, company or industry. It is intangible, dynamic and non-permanent, hence it needs to be earned and then maintained (Thomson and Boutilier, 2014). It has also been argued that social licence extends beyond building approval or acceptance, into engagement for long-term development (Owen and Kemp, 2012).There are many examples where stakeholder opposition – or withdrawal of social licence – have increased capital and operating costs, extended schedules and impacted reputation. At its extreme, the withdrawal of social licence to operate can also contribute to or be the catalyst for mine closure.The key benefit of obtaining a social licence is a reduction of risk. Stakeholder support and advocacy, as well as the implementation of social performance programs that contribute to social licence, can be beneficial in terms of schedule, costs and other benefits.While decisions to close a mine are generally driven by resource availability or economic conditions, the social, economic and environmental legacy remaining post-closure is of importance to many stakeholders. With a number of significant mines now approaching closure within Australia, we are seeing heightened community concern about the economic and social impact of mine closure and the success of land rehabilitation. A highly effective project team can be the difference between a successful project and a bad public relations exercise.
