Quite apart from economic considerations, the following performance parameters must be considered when selecting an explosive for a particular blasting operation. 1. total energy yield/kg, and more particularly, strain energy/kg and bubble energy/kg of charge 2. charge weight/m of blasthole 3. sensitivity of the charge 4. water resistance of the charge The effective division of an explosive's total energy into strain energy (SE) and bubble energy (BE) is explained as is the influence of each energy component on blast results. Because some rocks require a high strain energy for effective breakage, while others are most satisfactorily fragmented by bubble energy, values of SE and BE are more meaningful than those of total energy. Unfortunately, our extensive knowledge of the effects of certain variables on total energy has not yet been completely supplanted by the influence of these variables on SE and BE values. "The use of reverse circulation (RC) drilling for grade control sample collection was selected by the Pueblo Viejo Mine Geology department at the recommencement of the operation in 2010. This method was selected because it allows: for multi-bench drilling (60 m hole depth, four benches of mining) to aid mine planning and provide a detailed close spaced drill data comparison with the reserve model angled drill holes to optimise the drill hole interception of the vertically controlled mineralisation dry sample collection in areas of excessive surface and groundwater mining operations to commence with the long assay return period (due to the need for the samples to be shipped overseas for analysis) until the on-site laboratory is operational.To date, 118 302 m of drilling has been completed throughout the operations of two open pits: Monte Negro and Moore. Two drill rigs (contractor and site-owned and operated) with three generations of sampling systems have been used to date. Throughout the drilling a 20 per cent quality assurance, quality control (QAQC) sample check (blanks, field duplicates and standards) have been used to check the drilling and laboratories performance. In addition, a total of 1104 fines samples were collected to compare the drill chip samples collected and the fines lost with two of the sample systems used.The drilling to date has highlighted the need for a complete and coordinated system to be used before sufficient confidence in the quality of the samples collected is achieved.The complete system must be set-up and coordinated to obtain the best quality sample possible. This complete package includes: drill bit size and shape for the rock being drilled and mineralisation targeted face sampling hammers with the correctly sized hammer shrouds sample hose routing to reduce sample flow turbulence and choking blow-down valves to eliminate drill hole water that has entered the drill string during rod changes correct drilling techniques targeting sample quality a sample system that captures the fines for inclusion into the sample.These improvements can be obtained without reducing the drilling rates.The measurements required to demonstrate the improvement in the sample quality will be the focus of future work within the department.CITATION:Goers, M and Almond, M, 2012. The South Ghorveh Batholith (SGB) and the Almoughlagh Batholith (AB) intruded the volcanosedimentary sequence of Songhor Series (Triassic-Jurassic), during the Oligo-Miocene orogenic phase. The granitoids of the AB belong chiefly to the quartz-syenite and syenogranite clans while those constituting the SGB can be generally characterised as quartz monzonite varying towards quartz monzodiorite, and diorite. Granitoids constituting both the batholiths are low in free quartz, and possess characteristics of the æmagnetite seriesÆ, mostly of I-type, metaluminous to marginally peraluminous and calk-alkaline type. Adjacent to them are located the magnetite skarn deposits of Baba Ali and Gelali. In the light of petrography, geochemistry, mineralogy and field geology investigations they could be classified as Fe-skarn and mainly bear characteristics of calcic skarn deposits.

Mining of copper ore is still the most important business in Chile. In order to mine ore with a copper content of less than one percent at Minera Los Pelambres in an economical way, opencast mining is mandatory. Due to the prevalence of avalanches at the mine, the concentrator was located in a stable area, some distance from the mine. As a consequence, the material has to be transported between mine and concentrator by conveyor. A downhill conveyor system has been implemented for more than ten years as the most suitable and most economical ore transport alternative. Due to the length (12.6 km) and inclination (1300 m drop) of the conveyor system, the stresses in the steel cord belt are the dominant design criterion, resulting in a belt quality of ST 7800. Additional dynamic belt stresses during transient operating conditions are avoided by the installation of high capacity adjustable frequency drives. The rating of a single drive unit is 2500 kW. During ten years of operation, several capacity increases have been implemented, from an initial 5800 t/h up to the current capacity of 9900 t/h. This presentation describes the engineering challenges of the implementation of the world's strongest belt conveyor system. Capacity increase measures like the development of new control and breaking strategy, proved by dynamic simulation of belt forces and belt speed scenarios are explained. During this long-term partnership of RWE Power International, the former Rheinbraun Engineering, with Minera Los Pelambres, RWE has been engaged continuously for development work, safety checks, expert opinions and maintenance audits, and giving new impulse to conveyor technology.

"This paper presents preliminary results of ongoing research being carried out at the University of New South Wales Australia (UNSW) into improved methods for estimating rock mass strength. In this paper the rock mass strength of Hawkesbury Sandstone is assessed. An estimate is first made based on an extensive database of intact rock strength data being collated by the author and the assumption that rock mass strength can be determined following the geological strength-index (GSI) approach. The resulting strength envelope is then compared with nine documented case studies where stress induced failure has occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone. The case studies cover a range of conditions: construction dates from 1880s to 2006 spans from 3.2 to 12.5 m depths from 17 to 124 m excavation methods of drill and blast, roadheader and tunnel boring machine (TBM).Finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the principal stresses that were present at the time of the failures. The finite element models are interrogated to provide the values of major and minor principal stresses in and around the mapped failure zones. Failure and stable points are then compared to the proposed strength envelope(s) of Hawkesbury Sandstone derived using the Hoek-Brown and the spalling criteria. The ability of the Hoek-Brown rock mass strength criterion to differentiate between the ‘failed’ and ‘stable’ zones is considered to be remarkable.CITATION:Bertuzzi, R, 2014. Coal mining is recognised globally as a hazardous activity, and as a result operates under high levels of regulatory and public scrutiny while managing a workforce operating in a high-risk environment. Mining companies have developed sophisticated risk assessment procedures, management systems and personnel competency requirements that facilitate the safety and health of employees, and Australia is a world leader in coal mining safety and health.RISKGATE is an Australian Coal Association Research Program funded online platform that delivers broad cross-industry knowledge about current practice in the identification, assessment and management of coal mining risk. Centennial Coal has engaged with the RISKGATE program, managed by the University of Queensland’s Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, since its inception in 2010, and contributed topic experts to many modules, including underground topics within the geological and geotechnical domain (strata underground, outburst, coal bumps and bursts, and inrush).In 2013, Centennial Coal experienced significant unexpected strata failure at the Mandalong mine without any personal injury or fatality. This paper presents a case study in the application of RISKGATE to management of this unwanted event, the steps that were implemented, the information that was sourced and the contribution that RISKGATE made to the final outcomes. Enumerating active sea floor hydrothermal sites has been a challenge since their discovery almost 40 years ago. High-temperature hydrothermal sites are readily discoverable, primarily by detecting mineral-laden plumes, but working at these sites poses severe environmental and operational difficulties. Low-temperature vent fields, which may represent waning of venting from high-temperature systems, may be more accessible but are more difficult to locate. Over the last decade, however, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP; aka Eh) sensors capable of detecting minute concentrations of reduced hydrothermal chemicals have been successfully used to pinpoint such fields. In this extended abstract, we use ORP anomalies observed during continuous (towed sensor) plume surveys to estimate site frequency along four intermediate- to fast-spreading ridge sections. From these data, we estimate site frequencies between five and 16/100 km for these ridge sections. Previous camera surveys on the fast-spreading East Pacific Rise support these frequencies. These rates are much greater than the frequency of ~0.5–5/100 km, generally increasing with spreading rate, derived from well-surveyed ridge sections in the InterRidge database (InterRidge, 2014). Iron Ore Holdings Ltd (IOH) is an emerging junior iron ore company that is actively developing projects in the Central and Western Pilbara region of Western Australia. IOH commissioned URS Australia Pty Ltd (URS) in mid-2008 to prepare environmental assessment documents for the Phil’s Creek Project, which was rapidly moving into the development phase. This project comprised a small open cut iron ore mine that was expected to deliver approximately seven million tonnes over a five year mine life.IOH faced several challenges in the environmental assessment process for the Phil’s Creek Project. Although the Phil’s Creek Project attained approval but has now been placed on hold, it is a useful case study to discuss these challenges and how IOH addressed them. Several important lessons were learned through this process that can assist other proponents in addressing environmental challenges in a constructive and proactive manner.One major challenge faced by IOH related to the endangered northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus). Another challenge was the unusually high species richness of troglofauna recorded within the project area, with several species initially known only from within the proposed pit footprint.Meeting and overcoming these challenges has provided IOH with an increased understanding of the level of input required for consultation with government departments regarding environmental assessments, and this should stand the company in good stead for developing future tenements. Challenges in regards to the environmental assessment process may be faced during future developments, but IOH’s experiences to date and the lessons learned from the Phil’s Creek Project, will help pave the way for successfully overcoming them.

"Long-term strategic planning at BHP Billiton’s Western Australia Iron Ore business aims for sustainable value maximisation of its large, long-life, low-cost, expandable mineral inventory and supply chain infrastructure. The Dugald River lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 60 km north-west of Cloncurry and 87 km north-east of Mount Isa. The development project is expected to turn operational in 2018. The resource is estimated to contain 61.1 Mt at 12.6 per cent zinc, 1.9 per cent lead and 34 g/t silver, with a projected mine life of 25 years. The evolution from exploration project to development project has presented multiple challenges for the technical team. Understanding and modelling the structural complexity of the deposit has been one of these challenges.Historically fault zones were logged as a lithology, with structural measurements recorded in a separate database table. When underground drill programs and development commenced in late 2012, it was recognised the deposit was more structurally complex than had been modelled. The extensive number of fault zone lithologies in core logging, made it difficult to identify fault trends and model faults in 3D software packages.In 2014, a structural project was conducted to produce a fault model for the deposit. The project highlighted that by logging the faults as a lithology, a shortage of fault characteristics was being recorded. Additionally, structural information could not be filtered to identify different fault sets due to the lack of information available to filter on. One of the major outcomes of the study was to change the methodology for the structural logging of drill core.Faults are now logged in a separate structural log. The structural log collects two types of information: interval data and point data. The interval data represents the damage zone of the fault in the surrounding rock and the point data the plane of movement for the fault. The faults are further characterised by their intensity on a scale of one to five, the type of fault structure (fault breccia, fault vein etc), the minerals present on the fault surface and structural measurements when available.The new data set allows fault data to be filtered based on fault characteristics, making implicit and explicit modelling of the faults more timely and accurate. The data set can be used to produce fault wireframes as single surfaces from the point data or hanging wall and footwall surfaces from the interval data. For the past six years research funded by the State Energy Research Advisory Commit- tee of South Australia has been conducted at the South Australian Institute of Technology, School of Mining and Metallurgy on South Australian lignites. A major part of this work has been a study of the potential bene- fication of Bowmans lignite using hydrometal- lurgical techniques. The Bowmans lignite de- posit is the largest of its type in South Australia and is a major energy reserve for the state. The utilization potential of this deposit is reduced by its very high insitu NaCl content which presents serious problems for any process. Previous research conducted by Readett and co-workers (1984a & b) has shown that NaCl is amenable to extraction using simple batch water leaching operations. This leaching has been successfully described using a two stage diffusion model derived from first principles based on a simple diaphragm cell.

"Open pit mines today have more technology and data available. The challenge is to effectively use resources to analyse and identify mine productivity improvements. AMC Consultants Pty Ltd (AMC) has completed more than 100 benchmarking studies worldwide. In the process of gathering cost and productivity data, insights have been gained on how mines are using data to drive productivity. This paper aims to share good practice on using data, what benchmarks operations should be aiming for, where mines are currently sitting, high value areas to target, and how to best prioritise improvement to meet operational goals.A key purpose of data is to assist in managing and improving operations. Key information is used to drive meetings, decisions, budget estimates and reports. Safety, equipment productivity, available stocks, grade and spatial reconciliation are examples of where data is important for management systems. The key is to keep reporting simple whilst maintaining access to source data for troubleshooting and analysis.Some operations still have paper-based reporting systems. Some operations collect data directly off machines and instruments, use cameras and have off-site control centres. The level of technology is a fit-for-purpose choice.Comparisons of productivity assumptions commonly used in feasibility studies with good practice productivity numbers sourced from AMC’s benchmarking database will be shared in this paper. A typical activity mining cost breakdown will highlight where the high value areas for productivity improvement sit.In addition to examining the productivity of each mining step it is also important to examine the impact on the mine plan. Equipment numbers, strip ratio, grade and material hardness can impact the results of bottleneck analysis. A bottleneck example case study will highlight how productivity and other factors can be used to identify and prioritise improvement opportunities.Keep it simple. Use only the critical data for meetings, decision-making, reports and plans. Using a typical small logging instrument (Neltronic KPD), a natural gamma reference section for part of the Brockman Iron Formation and part of the Mt. McRae Shale has been established in the Newman area. This is compared with the stratigraphic type section of Trendall and Blockley (1968). Folding and faulting are recognised using natural gamma logs. Because of the confidence with which stratigraphic horizons can be identified, less expenditure on diamond and percussion drilling is required to confirm stratigraphic position. Using natural gamma logs as stratigraphic control the apparent thinning of the Banded Iron Formation during iron enrichment is Demonstrated.

When times are tough in the mineral industry û as they have been for some time û typical responses by mining companies are to cut costs and/ or increase production. The latter is seen to spread fixed costs, thereby also reducing unit costs per tonne mined. However, most mineral deposits respond to increased production rates by lowering ore grades, so the reduction in cost per tonne of ore does not necessarily result in a reduced cost per unit of metal produced. The authorsÆ experience is that this process often leads to a mine plan that is a long way from optimal. Producing to the point where marginal cost equals marginal revenue may work well in a manufacturing operation, but it is not necessarily the best strategy for a mining company with a depleting resource. Variations in tonnage and grade with depth, ore reserve optimism and a variety of other factors conspire to produce variations in production rates and grade that often result in suboptimal outcomes and potential mine failure. Added to this is the focus of industry analysts and senior corporate management on such measures as unit costs and ounces in reserves. This is perceived to have the perverse effect of driving the share price down when strategies are adopted that actually improve the value of the mining operation, and vice versa! Many mine failures can be prevented by a close examination of the tonnage grade curve and an understanding of how margins, net cash flows and resulting business risk change with cut-off grades and rates of production. A few relatively simple analyses early in the evaluation of a project can demonstrate the tradeoffs between the main decision parameters, leading to right-sizing of the operation. Once major commitments to major capital items have been made, and reserves have been publicly reported, optimisation of the operation becomes much more difficult than if it had been done earlier. Such investigations can also identify the upside potential and downside risks associated with factors outside the companyÆs control. Many strategies that may enhance value in the good times significantly increase the downside risk in the bad times. What is often called risk analysis typically looks at superficial issues, and does not evaluate the major factors leading to the potential for financial disaster. This paper illustrates some of these major risks, and demonstrates how they may be fully evaluated so that corporate decision makers can make fully informed decisions that take account of the real risks.

Banded iron-formation (BIF) and iron ores were measured using the CSIRO developed TIRHyLogger ™ to assess its ability to map quartz, carbonates and riebeckite. The TIR-HyLogger™ measures continuously spectral refl ectance data from diamond drill core or drill chips with a high spatial and spectral resolution. Samples from twelve BIF, bedded iron deposits (BID) and channel iron deposits (CID) have been analysed. The spectral data were processed with two different approaches. The first approach, focused on the identifi cation of the major minerals, was performed using principal component analysis (PCA). It identified four minerals (quartz, ankerite, riebeckite and goethite) and provided pure spectra called end-members. The second approach included a mineral diagnostic spectral feature extraction involving wavelength position, relative peak heights and relative depths of absorptions. Quartz has a diagnostic absorption at 8.625 µm and ankerite shows a refl ectance peak at 11.275 µm. In addition to the identified end-members, two carbonate populations (calcite and siderite) and two silica species (quartz and amorphous silica) were identified.

The prevalent strategic approach in the mining industry is one of planning. However, it is widely recognised that planning does not work in complex and uncertain situations (Mintzberg, 1994), such as those associated with ‘above ground’ non-technical orebody complexity (Trench, Packey and Sykes, 2014). Mintzberg, Ahlstrand and Lampel (2009) suggest the focus instead should be on strategic ‘thinking and doing’ and using the many ways to think about strategy to make sense of complex, uncertain, and unique situations. They therefore place great value in cognitive flexibility. Scenarios development utilizes several different thinking styles and thus assists with this type of flexible strategic thinking (Figure 1). The ‘Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET) Scenarios’ were developed with the ‘Oxford Scenario Planning Approach’ (OSPA) (Ramírez and Wilkinson, 2016). The OSPA aims more to improve the thinking skills of decision makers, rather than forecasting per se (Wack, 1985a, 1985b). As such, this paper focuses less on the content of the scenarios and instead on the practical value of scenarios in strategizing. Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past ten years has been 5.5% compared to a world average of 4.1%. Over the next ten years growth rate is expected to increase to 6% per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry. By the end of the 1970's natural gas is expected to supply more than 9% of Australia's, primary energy market. Coal will supply 40% and petroleum products 47%. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but-will only make a small contribution in the period. Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970's and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude, while supplying 60-70% of requirements-in the initial years; will need regular and sizable additions if they are to .keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated *that new discoveries-will need to approximate. ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date. .

Mining and mineral processing makes a vital contribution to AustraliaÆs national export income, and our society today is critically dependent on its products. Despite the importance of this industry, its operations often come under scrutiny because of its high potential impact on local environments û both social and ecological. The challenge for the minerals industry today is to make the most responsible and best possible use of the national resource base, maximising overall resource utilisation.Research efforts and industry implementation of improvements have been moving in this direction for a considerable time already, and the industry has a long history of process innovation and improvement in Australia. Examples range from the early development of gold cyanidation and mineral flotation to more recent work undertaken under the auspices of AMIRA or through the various CRCs and research organisations such as the AJ Parker CRC for Hydrometallurgy, the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre.However, the nature of research and innovation in the mining and mineral processing sector is changing, as the industry itself copes with the pressures introduced by globalisation, industry consolidation and commodity price cycles. Large firms that have historically maintained a tradition of corporate technology and a culture of innovation are moving to outsource their technological and research competencies and are adopting æfast-followerÆ mentalities. At the same time, the challenges of sustainable development that need to be addressed are many-faceted, multidisciplinary, and require a holistic approach for significant achievements to be realised. Many sustainability issues, particularly those pertaining to environmental and safety issues, are shared across large sections of the minerals industry, and are seen as æindustryÆ problems beyond the scope of a single company.In this environment, collaborative research efforts are becoming the dominant mechanisms for building on past innovations and ensuring the continued success of the mining and mineral processing industries within a framework of sustainable development.

Traditional coal mining planning seldom considers key æsustainability factorsÆ such as: societal impacts in the area; jobs (both created and lost); dislocation of towns and residences; impact on neighbouring communities and individuals; infrastructure concerns; post-mining land use (except when limited by law or other factors); habitat disruption and reconstruction; long-term economic impacts in the community; and net long-term community benefit. This paper presents a systems engineering approach based on the premise that systems can only be optimised if all factors are considered at one time. In theory, coal mine designs can be optimised for return on investment, environmental protection and sustainability. Using this approach, the permitting process may be quicker and less costly, relationships with neighbours, communities, environmental groups may be improved, the mining industry may be seen as a positive for the short-term and long-term and the mining industry may increase profits. This paper discusses geographic information system (GIS) tools that may be used to incorporate ecological and other sustainable development concerns into models of coal mine sustainability performance. Along with coal production cost and value information obtained from past and present coal mining operations, GIS data are used to develop mathematical cost and equation models. By analysis of on-the-ground data, the parameters to be included in these models are identified, the relationships between these parameters quantified and the models developed. The paper also discusses the next phases of the work to be completed once the data is obtained and the models are adjusted and validated. At that time, site-specific information will be input into the models and the approach to mining a particular property evaluated and optimised for financial rate-of-return and other desired outcomes, such as preservation or enhancement of sustainability values. Finally, the paper will examine how this approach can be combined with traditional mining engineering considerations in order to develop an optimised mine plan for a specific mining property.

The Koongarra uranium deposit was discovered in August 1970 by Noranda Australia Limited. Denison Mines Limited acquired the rights of ownership in October 1980 and has continued the 'struggle' to bring the proposed mine, containing approximately 13 300 tonnes of U308 of Indicated ore and having a value of $1 billion (1984 dollars), into operation. During the 14 years that have passed, the owners have found it necessary to deal with numerous Federal, State and Territory government departments, aboriginal representatives, handle thousands of communications, attend and convene countless meetings and spend millions of dollars.
