Cadmium occurs in the Broken Hill Lode essentially as a camouflaged element, substituting diadochically for zinc in the sphalerite.Analyses of a series of zinc concentrate flotation products, prepared from samples of ore taken at intervals throughout the developed lengths of the several orebodies forming the lode, have revealed a pattern in the distribution of cadmium relative to zinc. This pattern appears to reflect the temperature and order of deposition of the several orebodies, and the direction of movement of the mineralizing solutions.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation into the distribution of cadmium in the several orebodies of the Broken Hill lode was undertaken by the Mineragraphic Section. of C.S.I.R.O. in conjunction with the Broken Hill Geological Research Committee, as part of a study of Broken Hill mineralization.It arose from the examination of cadmium and zinc assays supplied by Mr. T. A. Read, Chief Metallurgist of the Broken Hill South Ltd.; of experimental zinc concentrates prepared from localized samples of the No, 2 and No. 3 orebodies in the Broken Hill South Mine. These assays suggested that the two orebodies were characterized by distinctive ZnjCd ratios.In view of the possible sigmficanc'e of such a difference, comparable data were sought from each of the other mines. The necessary samples of ore were collected by the geological staffs of the several mines. Fire suppression systems are now recognised by both NFPA 502 and PIARC as legitimate tools for both life protection and asset protection. The effectiveness of these tools for life protection demands extremely rapid and accurate incident detection coupled with rapid response. This rapid response must be integrated with other emergency systems such as emergency ventilation. The March 2007 fatal Burnley Tunnel incident in Australia graphically illustrates the potential of effectively integrated fixed suppression systems to protect people from harm and save infrastructure from damage. Despite the raft of technology available in that instance to the operator it was the human operatorÆs ability to effectively control the emergency equipment and not the equipment itself which so positively influenced the threat to life and property.

The mining industry to the lay mind is one which appears peculiarly dangerous, partly because the accidents which take place are usually of a very tragic nature, and partly because other, industries claim victims more from disease than fromviolence, and their fatal nature is not advertised to the same degree so that in spite of this idea of unusual risk, it is a fact that mining will compare favourably, as regards vital statistics, with nearly all other trades requiring special training.Neverthelessthere are a larger number offatal and serious accidents occurring year by year than one would like to see, and could the deaths which take place by accident be eliminated, it is safe to say that mining would become one of the most healthy of all species of skilled labour. If we examine the accidents appearing yearly in the reports of the Mining Departments of the various colonies, it will be at once admitted that many of them need riot, and in many cases ought not to, have occurred.It is, therefore, the object of tbis essay, to pass under review the ordinary precautions which should be adopted to minimise, as far as possible, the dangerous factors whereby fatalities are brought about.

The alkaline ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) leach process for extracting tungsten from scheelite (CaW04) ores has been examined for the treatment of low grade (<0.5 per cent WO,) residue dumps. The process has been considerably simplified by applying solvent extraction directly to the leach liquor.Ammonium paratungstate is thereby produced in a one step process and this obviates the need to physically recover EDTA prior to recycling. This modified process should be an economical method of tungsten extraction.

Post-tertiary training programmes have been designed and produced for geologists at different levels of understanding and expertise in the relationship between gold mineralization and shear zones. A workshop format was used as it allowed both clients and facilitators to participate in the learning process. Evaluation by facilitators and participants refined the workshop programme as an effective skills oriented learning process. The general observation is that post-tertiary training in small, interactive, practical, learning oriented groups is far better than lecture oriented short courses for developing skills based learning. The evaluation indicates that the process in post-tertiary training must include aspects which are both useful and used.

Except for uranium search, conventional oil well logging techniques are relatively little-used in mining exploration. The main reasons for this are cost and an apparent lack of awareness of the potential use of the methods in the search for ore. However, relatively inexpensive portable units are currently available for performing the simpler electrical and radiometric logs in diamond drill holes.The emphasis in oil exploration logging programmes is largely on the estimation of porosity. In most mineral work, however, porosity is not very significant, and factors such as mineral conductivity and radioactivity assume an important role.The Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) during a programme to explore for uranium and associated base metals in the area east of Rum Jungle, N.T., carried out electrical and radiometric logging of diamond drill holes as a routine part of their investigations. Case histories are described in which the logs were used to aid in defining stratigraphic sequences and transgressive structures in base-metal prospects. Some surface geophysicalanomalies were explained by the logging: induced polarization and electromagnetic anomalies were related to black slate; and self-potential anomalies were related to oxidation of pyrite black slate, or apparent electrokineticeffects in the black slate. The logs provided an objective appraisal of the rock units penetrated and thereby helped to differentiate lithologies.Borehole logging, including newer techniques such as downhole analysis, could be done in geological and geophysical investigations in other areas for a relatively small cost with a considerable potential gain of information.

The stability of a raise bore is often assessed using the rock mass classification system published by McCracken and Stacey as a modification of the Q system. Often the assessment is done using a spreadsheet to manipulate geotechnical log(s) of boreholes. This paper discusses the inherent difficulties with this approach. Recent work by others to provide guidelines to the classification system is discussed. A recent example of the design and raise bore performance at Macraes Gold Mine, New Zealand is presented. A key issue is that a visual assessment of the drill core and/or core photographs is necessary to æground-truthÆ the classification.

The epithermal gold-silver deposits wall poster is one in a series of posters on different mineral deposit types being produced by GNS Science to raise awareness of the characteristics of New Zealand mineral deposits and their prospectivity. Epithermal deposits consist of quartz veins, quartz vein stockworks and hydrothermal breccias that are mainly hosted in subaerial andesitic or rhyolitic rocks of Tertiary age. The deposits were formed at depths of typically less than 1 km and at temperatures between 180¦ and 320¦C, although ore grade mineralisation was generally deposited at less than 270¦C.   In New Zealand, epithermal deposits occur in association with late Cenozoic volcanic rocks in the Northland, Coromandel and Taupo volcanic regions. All of the past and present gold production, estimated at greater than 380 t (along with 1300 t Ag) comes from the Miocene-Pliocene Coromandel Volcanic Zone, where about 50 epithermal gold-silver deposits occur over a 200 km long belt. In Northland, silver and mercury have been produced from hot spring type epithermal deposits, and several gold-silver prospects have been identified. Ore grade gold-silver mineralisation is currently being deposited in several active geothermal fields of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, and extinct geothermal systems occur on the western side of the zone. The active systems have provided natural laboratories to help understand the processes of epithermal mineralisation.

Chalcopyrite concentrate was combusted in oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres, the composition of which ranged from 1-100 per cent oxygen. Factors studied included particle size, experimental temperature and oxygen concentration. The study was assisted by chemical and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and temperature measurements of single particles. Size reduction occurring after melting was found to have a major effect on the overall reaction time. Thus time to attain ignition was largely determined by the original particle size, whereas combustion time was independent of this factor. For particles larger than 40 I'm in air the time to attain ignition predominated. The maximum temperatures measured for single particles were the result of pyrite present in the concentrate. Chalcopyrite did not attain thesame temperatures. Vaporization, either as CU(g) or CuO(g) lImited the temperature. Maximum temperatures measured for single particles of pyrite ranged from 1610°C in 14 per cent oxygen to 2360°C in 100 per cent oxygen (both at 700°C). Measured temperatures were compared with those calculated from a diffusion-based model.

Hydrogen and carbon monoxide reduction data were obtained on pelletized materials of the type currently being prepared commercially in Australia.Pellets, approximately 1 cm diameter, made from Deepdale, Iron Prince, and Mt. Newman iron ore were reduced by hydrogen over the temperature range 500°-900°C and the reduced pellets were examined by thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron probe, and x-ray techniques. After an initial time delay it was found that up to 95 per cent reduction the data could be described by a porous model where gaseous diffusion through the solid is rate controlling. Independent measurements of effective diffusivity supported the values obtained from the reduction data. Above 95 per cent reduction the rate decreased markedly due to the formation of retained wustite or fayalite.Comparison with reduction by carbon monoxide over the temperature range 750°-900°C showed that the rate of reduction was approximately five times slower than for reduction by hydrogen.The rate of reduction was found to be a function of the initial properties of the pellets which may account for the widely conflicting results that have been obtained with previous investigations on porous pellets.

Alluvial gold mining is thriving in the Yukon Territory and Alaska. The scale of many operations is similar to those in New Zealand but there is greater government support for research and test work. As a result a great deal of information on equipment for the recovery of alluvial gold has been obtained. This paper is a review of the information with the aim of making relevant data available in New Zealand.

An assessment of methods currently available for the accurate determination of low concentrations of platinum in ores and mineral concentrates indicated that prior treatment of the sample by fire assay procedures is necessary. To enable rapid determinations to be carried out, instrumental methods applied to the metallic bead produced from the fire assay treatment have been evaluated, considering maximum flexibility for concentration variations, minimum chemical operations, and adequate sensitivity.Atomic absorption spectrometry proved suitable, giving solution determination limits of 0·4 p.p.m. Pt, 0·1 p.p.m. Pt, or 0·06 p.p.m. Pt under various extraction conditions using aqueous and organic agents. Thesedetermination limits related to 1 assay ton of sample (32·67 g) produced easily readable and accurate readings within the range of platinum contents (0·03-2·0 p.p.m.) of economic interest in deposit evaluation and prospecting. The technique shows promise of also being suitable for determination of palladium and gold.

'The politics of mining in New Zealand' is a topic I chose myself because of its importance in the future of the New Zealand mining industry. There are many people in the industry who are cynical about politics, cynical about politicians and definitely cynical and often critical of political decisions. In fact, many industry people say they don't want to get involved in politics, they just want to get on with the business of exploration or mining. The point of my address is that politics is important and the industry cannot afford not to participate in the political process.

An examination is made of some of the consequences of a magmatic gas phase developed during a late stage of differentiation of an acidic magma. Elements possessing halides with high partial pressures (Sn, Mo, W) may be removed from the magma by distillation into gas bubbles in the manner suggested by Fenner (1933). The common chalcophile elements are not affected by this mechanism, but form sulphides which may become attached to rising gas bubbles by one of three distinct mechanisms. The gas bubbles may then carry the sulphides upwards and concentrate them in some favourable locus, giving rise to an ore-forming fluid. The process would operate selectively upon different sulphides and is capable of providing an explanation of the paragenetic succession observed in ore deposits as well as other important geological criteria of ore genesis.INTRODUCTIONThere is a widespread belief among contemporary geologists that a large and important class of ore deposits is genetically related in some way·to acidic igneous rocks. This class includes the tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth type of mineralization as well as a variety of sulphide deposits.A basic problem confronting explanation of the genesis of these deposits is the manner in which trace elements which were originally widely dispersed in granitic magmas were segregated therefrom and concentrated into economic mineral deposits.The principles underlying the formation of one group of minerals deposits (pegmatites) related to granitic magmas ate reasonably well understood, largely due to the labours of Goldschmidt and his school. The copper and zinc contents of herbarium specimens of 11 of the 12 Australian species of Polycarpaea were determined in order to establish background and anomalous values of potential use in biogeochemical prospecting.Cumulative frequency curves were used to establish appropriate threshold concentrations for six species including the "copper plant"' P spirostylis. Collection localities of Polycarpaea specimens with anomalous copper or copper-and-zinc values are under investigation.

Underground Mine Drainage may be conveniently divided into two operations:(a) Collecting and transporting drainage water to the pump eastern.(b) Elevating water to the surfacc by pumping.This short paper describes a system which automatically performs operation "a" and which has been developed on the South mine at Broken Hill, under the supervision of the mine foreman, Mr. F. McDonell. In referring to two subjects of interest to the Members of this Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, I would at the outset desire to express our gratification that to-day we are able to welcome as now united with ourselves, those members who until recently constituted the New Zealand Institute. It is hoped that the amalgamation so amicably arranged may be productive of the best results to all concerned, incorporated as this combination has been at the moment of the fulfilment of that greater political union, the Australian Commonwealth.Since last Annual Meeting held in Brisbane, we have come under the same roof as the Chamber of Mines of Victoria, and we entertain the hope that as that Chamber and this Institute possess so many interests in common in the encouragement and advancement of mining and metallurgical progress in these colonies, that much mutual benefit will ensue. There are many directions in which each body can assist the other, and I trust that a friendly co-operation will be maintained.It is gratifying to feel that in all the colonies a distinct movement is being made to increase the facilities for education in Mining and Metallurgy but if I may refer to our colony of Victoria in particular, we have to express the profound regret that in the means of education in the higher branches, we occupy an inferior position, and it is quite certain that we will continue to do so unless the Government is prepared to subordinate provincial considerations to the weightier.

Variations in delay timing can have a marked influence on blasting effectiveness and, hence, on total production costs. In single-row bench blasts, delay firing is invariably more effective than simultaneous initiation. In single-row delayed blasts, there is an optimum inter-hole delay above and below which inferior blasting results are obtained. This optimum delay is equal to the time required for each charge to just effectively detach its quota of the burden. The inter-hole delay should seldom be less than 4 ms.m-l of burden.In multi-row blasts in which holes in a given effective row are fired on the same delay, the entire burden on any effective row should be detached from the rock mass just before charges in the next effeotive row detonate. Delays shorter than this give inferior blasting results and an increased likelihood of environmental and slope stability problems. If the inter-row delay is too long, cut-offs can occur, especially where the delay unit is located outside the blasthole. For a surface delay system, the optimum inter-row delay usually varies between 4 ms.m-l and 8 ms.m-l of effective burden. The number of rows that can be fired effectively with surface delay systems (in a single blast) is limited by the threat of cut-offs. Greater interrow delays and a larger number of rows per blast can be fired to advantage with down-the-hole delay systems.There are practical limits to the timing accuracy of all available delay systems. The existence of delay time variability should be recognized and duly considered in the design of blasts.The relationship between delay timing and blasting vibrations is not discussed.

Background information, formulae and a systematic set of procedures for estimating capital and operating costs for open pit mining equipment are presented in this paper. Firstly, equipment capital costs are required. These can be obtained from either suppliers, contractors or from first principles. The equipment is then divided into cost elements. Typically these are fuel and power requirements, spare parts consumption, wear items such as tyres, teeth and drill bits and finally repair and operating labour requirements. By consideration of the cost and life of each element a base cost can be derived. The base cost is then adjusted to suit specific site conditions such as the proximity to spare parts suppliers, the duty or ground conditions and the management and operator skills specific to the site. Hence, the same item of equipment can be costed to reflect different operations. Included are tables and data for typical plant items. Several examples are also given to illustrate the methodology being presented. The intention is to provide a set of procedures to allow costs to be built up from base level in a systematic and repeatable way. Applications for these costs include feasibility studies, budgetting and data for economic analyses.

UNDER a contract relating to the sale of a Broken Hill concentrate, the differentiation between granular and slime concentrate is determined by the proportion of the material which will pass a 200-mesh (I.M.M. standard) screen, and this has led to considerable attention being devoted to the question of laboratory sizing tests with screens of this order.It was found that many of the screens turned out by the makers during the war, and also since its termination, did not conform with the I.M.M. specifications as closely as some supplied in pre-war days. A perfect screen is hardly to be expected, but when the above contract was framed the parties anticipated that, by special care being taken during manufacture, a screen at least as good as the best pre-war screens would be available. This, however, has not proved to be the case, and the large irregularities in screens recently supplied render them useless for sizing determinations under the contract.
