Clearly a plant designed only to treat average ore at the nameplate rate will fail to achieve nameplate in any typical year. To insert the necessary capability to achieve nameplate it is common process engineering design practice that plant must be able to treat an ore with 80th percentile value (hardness or competence values for example) at the nameplate rate. In the authorÆs experience, apart from a couple of notable cases, this has been applied reasonably well as a principal, and with widespread success. However, in a number of recent instances it became clear that the use of the 80th percentile number would have resulted in significant under design of the plant. This paper makes the case that the 80th percentile, as a principal, has can have serious flaws and its use needs to be assessed on a case by case basis. The discussion in this paper is the first step in developing a new design principal, and the associated methodology for selection of a design value, that will ensure plants are designed to achieve their nameplate capacities.CITATION:David, D, 2013. Triboelectric Separation - Beneficiation of Coal The performance of triboelectric separators is highly sensitive to the selectivity of the particle charging process. This paper presents a quantitative study on triboelectric coal beneficiation. The performance of different charging media was studied. Stainless steel was identified as having a work function between that of coal and silicate gangue and found to be the optimum charging medium for coal beneficiation. Recent results from separation tests were performed where silicate gangue was separated from crude coal using a parallel plate free-fall separator are illustrated.

A tectonic interpretation of the Coromandel Peninsula which suggests that the basement underwent tensional collapse at its northern and southern ends would permit more ready penetration of late stage magmatic fluids. This hypothesis is consistent with regional trends of the chloride content of low grade geothermal waters and of the yield of gold and silver per unit weight of quartz worked. The consequences of such a model are that mercury should not only be a good pathfinder for Coromandel gold, but that it should be correlative with ratios of base metals high in the zoning or paragenetic sequences to those lower in the sequences. This is demonstrated successfully in an area of mineralisation in the southern Coromandel.

Land rehabilitation at Golden Cross is reviewed, 8 years after mine closure in 1997/98, from the perspectives of a Peer Reviewer (land rehabilitation) and a Regional Council Officer (Resource Consents compliance). Land rehabilitation items we discuss include: management of restored pastures, native plantings (on-site riparian and block plantings and off-site environmental riparian enhancement plantings), wetlands (on-site tailings lake and sediment ponds littoral zone plantings, and basement of the open pit; and off-site wetlands enhancement plantings), pine plantations on-site and on surrounding land, stabilization of the Tailings Lake Embankment (landslide) and Open Pit capping, capping of acid-mine-rock, stability of discharge channels, buildings and amenities, public access for recreation, educational uses, and future management of the site. Pest control has helped to conserve the rare and endangered HochstetterÆs (Leiopelma hochstetteri) and ArcheyÆs (L. archeyi) frogs, and a regionally significant stand of rare swamp maire (Syzygium maire) has been conserved and fenced.

Total mechanisation in the Western district of New South Wales is quite a recent addition to productive methods in that State, for it was only in 1940 that the first colliery was equipped for this method of winning coal. Now almost all mines either are totally mechanised or are planning to get their coal by these means.This marked change in recent years is explained by the salient features of the industry's history. Collieries in New South Wales had generally been subjected to low selling prices forced on them by over-production and severe competition. Little money was available out of profits to purchase machinery, and returns on capital were so poor that inducement to invest money in the industry was nonexistent.The second world war brought price fixing at the already low prices. It was not until the post-war period that there has been any inducement to mechanise.Much credit for mechanisation can be given to the Joint Coal Board, a government body formed in 1948. Pursuing a broad plan for the rejuvenation of the industry, this Board, purchased large quantities of machinery for use in, mines under hire-purchase agreement. These agreements encouraged machine mining, and this fact, together with the ensuing production economies, has improved the financial position of the industry.The Board has also been instrumental in the granting of increases in the fixed price of coal, so that the industry has been given an even greater boost in the direction of mechanisation.

This paper details the approach adopted to upgrade the current metallurgical facilities at both the Driefontein and Kloof Gold Mines in the Republic of South Africa. Goldfields Ltd operates eight metallurgical plants within South Africa of which three have recently been upgraded to replace the older technology previously installed, with modern equipment. This upgrade was undertaken with a view to improving extraction efficiencies and to reduce operating costs. The upgrade was undertaken in a phased approach with the first phase focused on the replacement of the filtration/zinc precipitation processes with modern pumpcell carbon-in-pulp technology. Included in this upgrade phase was the installation of an automated hands-free electrowinning cell, which represents the first commercial application of its kind in the industry. The second phase of the upgrade entailed replacement of the multiple comminution stages previously installed with large SAG and SAG/Ball mill combinations. Due to the rapid return on these projects, a fast-track approach was adopted which necessitated the purchase of available good conditioned second-hand mills from both within South Africa as well as in Australia. Goldfields Ltd is a large mining house with gold mining operations in South Africa, Australia and Ghana. A well advanced PGM exploration project is underway in Finland- Arctic Platinum.

When asked to lecture at Bendigo on the geological factors that determine the depths of ore deposits, I hesitated for a little before agreeing to lecture on the theory of deep ores in the city world famous as the pioneer of deep gold mining. If there be one place, wherein the conditions of deep-seated ore deposits should be sufficiently well understood, it is the city where the 180 mine made its bold plunge to previously neglected depths; and where the record of that famous mine has been broken by the skill of the managers, and the pluck of the proprietors, of the New Chum Railway and Lazarus mines.In the face of such practical triumphs, theoretical discussion may seem a waste of time, especially since it is often dedared that the existence of such deep-seated ores was denied by geological theory. This assertion is, however, startling since the oldest and best supported geoiogical theory of ore deposits, has taught for more than a century tliat ores must descend far below the regions of practical mining. This charge against Victorian geologists is generally based on opinions attributed to the late Sir Fredrick McCoy. It has been repeatedly affirmed that he declared that gold cannot occur pelow a depth of 300 feet. But so far I have not been able to discover that McCoy ever made any such assertion or ever held such a view.

AngloGold Ashanti Ltd nominated Sunrise Dam Gold Mine as a case study via their involvement with the long-running Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) International P9P research program (AMIRA, 2015) . A group of researchers from the Global Comminution Collaborative (GCC) conducted a comminution circuit survey and review together with a large group of graduate metallurgists, senior metallurgists and operators. Fundamental and applied research understanding was used to identify productivity and efficiency improvements around the crushing and grinding circuits. The limitations of current scientific knowledge were identified through this process and this will allow future research to be more focussed on what is required by industry.The comminution circuit at Sunrise Dam comprises three stages of crushing followed by two stages of ball milling. The secondary crusher and primary ball mill classification were identified as the primary limitations of the circuit. The secondary crusher was found to be underperforming through overall equipment efficiency (OEE) analysis and an improved chamber design was identified by Chalmers University. This improved design will promote higher power utilisation, choke feeding and a finer crushed product for the milling circuit. The primary ball mill product is classified by a combination of a trommel, 3 sieve bends and a hydrocyclone. The combination of poor classification and coarse, competent feed led to a situation where the primary mill was overfilled with rocks, reducing grinding rate due to cushioning of impact. The Resource Management Act 1991 provides for activities to be classified as permitted, controlled, restricted discretionary, discretionary, non-complying or prohibited in district and regional plans. This paper looks at the use of the prohibited activity status to restrict, in particular, mining. Often the use of prohibited activity status for mining appears to have no basis other than the negative perceptions that the local community and/or the planner drafting the plan has toward mining and quarrying.   The paper will address the current appeal regarding the use of prohibited activity status now before the Court of Appeal, and the history to the litigation. The relevance of the outcome of the appeal to the minerals sector will also be explained.

Nowadays mining projects are seeking new versions of evaluation that are based on the flexibility in the project. Real option valuation (ROV) is one of the modern evaluation methods that provides a tool to adapt and revise mining projects under uncertainty and future variable movements. Most evaluation approaches simply assume that some variables are fixed, such as production rate, variable cost, fixed cost and lifetime of project. The first section of this paper reviews a comprehensive study of ROV in mining projects. The paper then introduces a new model that solves problems where previous methods lacked. The new method endeavours to find maximum mining project value by adding total cost as a function of production rate into ROV. The second section has been applied to a new model on the Century zinc mine in north-west Queensland, thus illustrating the future overview of that mine. The new version of ROV gave a significant positive value for the Century Mine, when the closure and reopening options where available throughout the life of the mine. Consequently, the new method evaluates real options to add value to mining projects, maximising projectÆs value, estimating cost function, optimising production rates and offers opportunities in projects to amplify gains or to mitigate losses.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR), a well-established geophysical technique generally used for shallow civil engineering applications, has, in the last decade, found increasing acceptance as a complementary tool in mineral resource evaluations. As new sites are trialled with the method, a greater understanding is being garnered regarding the most suitable environments for long-range radar. Although successful projects have been conducted worldwide for mineral sands, iron ore and alluvial projects – tropical weathering environments have produced some of the most impressive results. Specifically, tropical nickel laterites have shown to be, with some notable exceptions, ideal GPR environments.Such high-resolution remote sensing has particular relevance to bulk commodities or those which possess significant rheological variation within geological units, and has led to some innovative downstream uses within exploration, project development and the larger mining industry. The relationship between the maceral composition of coal and the strength of the coke produced from that coal has received a great deal of attention in recent years.Studies using two Bulli Seam coals, and blends of Bulli and Wongawilli Seam coals, from the IIIawarra Measures of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales were carried out.The optimum range of vitrinite was found to lie between 45 per cent and 60 per cent (mineral matter free).Above and below this vitrinite range coke strength deteriorated. Coke strength indices increased with rank, and the optimum vitrinite content increased with an increase in rank. These changes require confirmation as trends by testing a third level of rank. It was noted that vitrinite content decreased with an increase in the specific gravity of separation of the coal.Use of petrographic analyses will increase confidence in choosing coals for coking, provided the coals are well known. Such analyses offer the possibility of greater flexibility in coal purchases and the possibility of producing a marketable blend from coals, which have limited market potential. Critical base coals for blends can be conserved.Significantly more work is required before coal reserves can be utilized to optimum advantage. This work would require extension of the studies discussed in this paper and, in particular, the testing of a wider range of rank.

As it is probable that a large proportion of the members of the Institute attending this meeting are connected with the metalliferous side of mining, the writer thought that, as coal and coke are required for various purposes in considerable quantities by their companies, some particulars of the coal industry might be of interest, especially when visiting such an important coal-mining centre as Newcastle. It is proposed to deal with the matter from the mining and economic point of view, as the geology has been so well and exhaustively dealt with in various publications referred to in the bibliography at the end of this paper. In the immediate vicinity of the city of Newcastle the collieries are gradually being abandoned, and during the past few years the Wickham and Bullock Island, Stockton, Hetton, Newcastle Coal Mining Company's "B," and the Australian Agricultural Co's Sea pit, have disappeared from the coal-producing list of collieries. AIl of these collieries worked the Borehole seam, from which, up to date, the largest quantity of coal has been produced in the northern district.It is the bottom seam of any present commercial value in the Upper or Newcastle coal-measures, and although the coal-in this seam has not been entirely 'exhausted in the collieries referred to, they have been abandoned for various reasons. For example, although about 60% of the seam (18 to 20 ft. thick) was left in the workings in the form of rectangular pillars under the city of Newcastle, this was not sufficient to 1?revent'the subsidence which took place about twelve years ago.Again, large quantities of coal in the Borehole seam have been left to protect the shipping arrangements at the Dyke, and other...

The design of the settling pond for the Malvern Hills opencast coal project was based on a primary requirement to control runoff and sediment generated from the immediate 6 ha mine catchment, which included two seepages from old underground workings. The pond has been particularly effective in controlling turbidity in the outflow water, with the consent limit of 50 NTU being met on all but one occasion and normal levels of discharge less than 10 NTU. Water quality testing carried out at the time of consenting indicated that there were no acid-generation issues with the proposed mine site in dominant mudstone strata of the Broken River Formation, and that water from the old mine workings was near-neutral in terms of pH and well-buffered. However, it became apparent over the very dry summer of 2003 - 2004 that slaking of the exposed mudrocks in the mine batters was resulting in significant acidity generation, and outflow pH levels were well below the consent limit of 6.5 during and following periods of rainfall. Although these acidity problems have been remediated in the short-term by the use of lime products, it is clear that a programme of lithotype characterisation for AMD should have been undertaken and this has now been implemented. Design of long-term acid drainage control measures is being carried out, and will probably be based around the use of hydrated lime for pH control with enhancement of natural wetlands.

Rio Tinto has embarked on a journey to use automation to improve the performance of its surface mines. The driver for automation is to improve the accuracy and consistency of mining processes and less to do with cost savings through labour reduction. A key task in most surface mines is blasthole drilling. The degree to how well this is done cascades through the downstream mining process. It impacts scheduling, excavation, slope stability, material handling, beneficiation and final product blending. Improved blasthole drilling was identified as an objective that has a significant business case in most of Rio Tinto's surface mines. This paper describes Rio Tinto's drill enhancement project that has developed a robust system for automating most of the functions on a Terex SKSS16 drill rig. Automated drilling is currently being used in production at the West Angelas iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. A description of the essential elements of the drill automation system is given together with an overview of how automated drilling is performed remotely from the mine office. A review of some of the benefits of the enhanced drill system is given together with the future plans to extend the functionality of the automated drill and the expected benefits.

The ConSep ACACIA Reactor is a device, which utilises a high intensity cyanidation process to achieve very high, usually near total, recovery of gold from gravity concentrates. The process utilises a fluidised bed and a chemical oxidant to enhance the gold dissolution kinetics to the point where the bulk of the dissolution occurs in a few hours. For convenience and security, most plants operate a 24-hour turn around. The product from the process is in the form of cathode gold ready for smelting by traditional means. The ConSep ACACIA Reactor performs a two-fold role. Firstly it increases gravity gold production, leading to a decreased CIP feed grade. Secondly, it removes slow leaching components from the plant leaching circuit. This two fold benefit leads to the following efficiencies: enhancement of the dissolution kinetics; enhancement of the adsorption kinetics; reduction of the gold load reporting to the carbon; a significant reduction of the ægold in circuitÆ lockup; and removal of slow leaching entities which can also result in a lowering of the required cyanide concentrations in the leaching circuit and a subsequent reduction in overall cyanide consumption. The above benefits are discussed in this paper, with a particular focus on the ConSep ACACIA ReactorÆs role in removing slow leaching components, with data generated over a 21-month period. Improvement in overall plant recovery via removal of slow leaching gold species is achieved in two ways. Firstly, some of the slow leaching entities, successfully leached under intensive cyanidation, are not always fully leached under plant conditions. This results in a lowering of the solid tailing. Secondly, the faster leaching kinetics achieved in the plant as a result of the removal of slow leaching entities results in faster and more complete adsorption of the dissolved gold onto activated carbon. This results in a lowering of the solution tailings. The construction and operation of the ConSep ACACIA Reactor is simple. Apart from the reactor body, which is a proprietary design, all components of the system are æoff the shelfÆ or specific to the siteÆs requirements. In operation of the fully automated version, a PLC controls a series of valves and pumps but except for a daily changeover process the only operating component for the bulk of the time is a relatively small solution pump. The process can be totally automated giving the security of a æhands freeÆ concentrate handling process up to the point where the product is presented as cathode gold. The ConSep ACACIA Reactor was developed by Anglogold Australia (formerly Acacia Resources) for Union ReefÆs Gold Plant and has been in production since February 1999. It has proven to be a low cost, high recovery, mechanically reliable method for the processing of gold concentrates. Such has been the success of the plant, as of June 2003 there are eighteen full installations of the processing plant installed at mines owned and/or managed by Anglogold, Newmont, Placer Dome, Independence (formerly Lonrho), Sons of Gwalia and Harmony.

Support design in jointed or blocky rock masses is often approached by the use of either 'rules of thumb', rock mass classification systems such as the Q-system (Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974) or RMR (Bieniawski, 1973) or conventional wedge analysis. Generally, this requires that a number of key simplifying assumptions are made and the support system is designed to cater for either a mean, most likely, or worst case scenario depending on the risk tolerance. The design block size is often a major uncertainty and often a worst case block size based on excavation span is used. Thompson and Windsor (2007) state that it is inappropriate to base support designs on the excavation size as these size blocks rarely occur if discontinuity trace lengths are considered. Probabilistic keyblock methods can be used to determine the most likely design block sizes. A methodology is presented whereby JBlock software (Estherhuizen, 1996) is used to estimate potential block sizes as part of the support design process. Using information such as the spacing, orientation and length of discontinuities, it is possible to simulate blocks in the walls of an excavation (Esterhuizen and Streuders, 1998). Keyblock analysis methods (Goodman and Shi, 1985) are used to evaluate whether blocks are removable and whether the chosen support will be sufficient to ensure stability. Data from two mines is used to demonstrate how probabilistic keyblock analyses can be used in support design. Discontinuity data was used to generate 10 000 removable blocks and the design block size statistics were determined. For one mine this information was used to scale blocks in a conventional. Unwedge analysis whilst for the other mine, the point estimate method (Harr, 1987) was applied. The choice of appropriate design acceptance criteria in terms of factor of safety and probability of failure is also considered.

Predicting the future is a task that should always be delegated. If that is not possible, then stating your views confidently, but retrospectively, is preferable. Hindsight encourages clarity of thought and sharpens perception. When all else fails one can look back into history and see the trends, evaluate the current situation and project it a little way into the future - in this case 10 years. In exploration the rate of change has been increasing over the past 20 years. With expected developments in technology, legislation, and their sociological impacts, we will see such rapid change over the next decade as to make us uncomfortable, unless we are prepared for it.   The social obligations of our industry also have changed enormously over the past 20 years and are still changing. This will lead to further changes in the way we conduct our business if we wish to stay in business. As exploration technology improves, a further dimension is added by the expectations of the communities in which we operate. This extra dimension needs to be quantified so that we not only keep up with current developments but also get ahead of the game. This paper is based on the New Zealand experience, some of which will be familiar to mineral explorers in other countries.

Arrium’s magnetite concentrator has recently completed a modification program to improve the process that has been in operation in Whyalla, South Australia for the previous seven years. The magnetite concentrate is pumped via pipeline to the coast and serves as pellet plant feed, eventually being turned into steel in the Whyalla blast furnace. With the addition of a new 3MW IsaMill at the concentrator, the plant has seen increased production from a reduced feed grade, enabling Arrium to treat ores previously stockpiled as waste.
