The surface tension of zinc has been determined by the sessile-drop method in a progvam emphaszzing detailed experimental care. The surface tension oj. the pure metal was measured over a range of ternperature from the melting point (419.6"C) to 540°C. At the melting point, the suvface tension of zinc was found to be: 1) 99.99+ pct Zn - 757.0 5 dynes per cm 2) 99.999+ pct Zn - 761.0 5 dynes per CI 3) 99.9999 pct Zn - 76'7.5 5 dynes pev cna From experiments carried out in a closed, isothermal cell, the temperatuve coejyicient of the surface tension (6y/6T)p, , of zinc xas found not to be negative but to be postiue. A positive tenzperatre coefficient indicates a greater depee of order in the surface than in the body of the lquid. Houlezer, by delibevately inducing continuous zaporization, a temperature coefficient of su)face tension with a negative slope can be produced. The work reported herein was undertaken as part of a larger program of fundamental research on the properties of molten zinc and zinc alloys. This program grew out of a continuing interest at the Mines Branch in the behavior of liquid metals in the foundry and of a desire on the part of the zinc industry for reliable basic data. The work was originally begun in cooperation with the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd., Trail, B.C., and was subsequently continued from 1960 to date in association with the Canadian Zinc and Lead Research Committee and the International Lead and Zinc Research Organization. Although the surface tension of liquid zinc has of course, been measured before, as Table I and Fig. 1 demonstrate, there is not good agreement among the existing values. Such disparities arise because sources of experimental error are insufficiently controlled. This situation places the reader in doubt. One result may be correct within narrow limits—even fortuitously—yet, because there is not agreement between several values, none can be accepted with conviction and all become suspect. It seemed, therefore, in the circumstances, that there was room for further work embodying considerable emphasis on experimental care in order that, within a small margin of error, an accurate value might be obtained. It was in this spirit that the work was undertaken. METHOD The sessile-drop method -as adopted for this work. In this method, when applied to liquid metals at elevated temperatures, the outline of the meridional section through a drop resting freely on a horizontal surface is recorded photographically. When F. Heuslerl found in 1898 that certain alloys containing only copper, manganese, and tin were ferromagnetic, the discovery excited a great deal of interest and led to numerous investigations. It was early found that tin could be replaced by aluminum, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, or boron without destroying the ferromagnetic nature of the alloys.2 Copper may also be replaced by silver.% All these alloys have come to be known as "Heusler alloys." The aluminum alloys apparently were the most magnetic and have been most extensively investigated. However, no agreement has yet been reached as to the source of the ferromagnetism arising from these nonferromagnetic elements. Absence of reliable quantitative data makes speculation hazardous. The value of much of the earlier work was vitiated by lack of necessary precautions against contamination, and by lack of close control of heat-treatment. It was only recently established that in aluminum Heusler alloys4 the ferromagnetism arose from a single phase, an ordered body-centered-cubic structure. With modern methods of preparation, heat-treatment, and X-ray examination, it is possible to prepare these alloys without contamination, to heat-treat them intellgently, and to determine what phase or phases are present in the finished sample. In the present investigation, a series of pure alloys in the comparatively neglected copper-manganese-tin system have been prepared, which consist of a single, body-centered-cubic structure (the beta phase) and whose compositions vary within wide limits. The magnetic saturation values of these single-phase alloys have been quantitatively determined, so that considerable data on the effect of composition on the ferromagnetism have been made available. In the course of the investigation some information on the extent of the stability of the beta phase and the nature of phases in adjacent regions of the ternary diagram has been accumulated. Anomalies in earlier data. have been explained, and alloys have been prepared that are much more strongly magnetic than any previous Heusler alloys. Previous Work In the original work of F. Heuslerl and coworkers,2 a maximum magnetic saturation value of I = 107 was found at the composition Cu6Mn3Sn, while a value for CusMnAl of I = 443 was early measured. Several of the commonly used methods for deter-mination of effective grain densities of minerals have been evaluated for accuracy and precision, and their applicability to various types of petroleum reservoir minerals tested. Consideration was given to the effect of consolidation, swelling clay, and wettability on these grain-density determinations. Procedures with helium displacement, a modified low-pressure Boyle's law porosimeter, and liquid displacement (water, n-decane, and n-octanol) were tested. The helium-displacement procedure was used primarily as an independent reference for which the effects of fluid-solid interaction, e.g., adsorption and wettability, were negligible. The procedures with the Boyle's law porosimeter and with liquid displacement are the methods in common use. Minerals investigated included calcite, West Texas limestone core samples, California sandstone core samples, and Wyoming bentonite. The number of samples tested, while not large, was adequate to permit application of statistical methods. Grain-density measurements on calcite (Iceland spar) provided a basis of comparison for the accuracy and precision of the procedures under investigation for a material with a high degree of chemical and physical homogeneity and for which fluid-solid interactions were at a minimum. Liquid-displacement procedures (water or n-decane) provided the greatest reliability and precision for measurement of the grain densities of the limestone tested. Gas-displacement procedures (helium or Boyle's law porosimeter) provided the greatest reliability and experimental convenience, if not the greatest precision, for the measurement of the grain densities of the swell- ing clay, Wyoming bentonite, and the shah sandstones which -contained appreciable amounts of swelling, in-terstitial clays. These experiments were designed to evaluate the applicability of the grain-density procedures in common we to some of the less tractable minerals—tight limestones, shaly sandstones, and swelling clays. The results should provide a useful basis for a selection of the method most suitable for application to the various petroleum reservoir minerals encountered and especially for use in the estimation of formation porosity. INTRODUCTION These experiments were undertaken to evaluate the accuracy and precision of several commonly used methods for determination of effective grain densities of minerals, and to test their applicability to various types of petroleum reservoir minerals. Consideration was also given to the effect of consolidation, clay, and wettability on these grain-density determinations. The minerals investigated included calcite, West Texas limestone core samples, California sandstone core samples, and Wyoming bentonite. The accurate determination of the porosity of petroleum reservoir formations, in particular those of low porosity, has received much attention. Both bulk-volume and grain-volume measurements necessary in the evaluation of porosity have been examined by many investigators with the objectives of improving both the accuracy and the precision of these determinations. In this investigation statistical criteria for selection of the most reliable and suitable procedure for use with a given type of mineral are demonstrated. The grain-volume measurement procedures appear to be the most susceptible to improvement.

Pure tin and Sn-0.5pct Pb ingots have been frozen unidirectionally from the base. For quiescent melts that were initially undercooled, a transition from lower eqlciaxed structure to an upper columnar structure is found in the alloy ingots. Columnar to equi-axed back to columnar transitions are observed in superheated alloy ingots, but no such equiaxed band is observed impure tin. The reproducible equiaxed band is associated with a thermal undercooling followed by a recalescence. This undercooling is <5"C, whereas the critical (maximum obtainable) under-cooling for both the pure tin and the alloys used is -20°C. A similar undercooling is observed at the same position in the pure tin ingots, although in this case no clear transition in structure can be seen. The structure of the pure tin ingots is either entirely columnar or mixed columnar-equiaxed. A consideration of the detailed thermal history of the ingots indicates that the ingot macrostructures are determined by the occurrence of a local therlnal undercooling in conjunction with nuclei multiplication and transport mechanisrris. GENERALLY it is found that a pure metal ingot solidifies so as to produce an entirely columnar structure. Frequently an alloy ingot is found to have a columnar outer zone and an equiaxed central portion. Early systematic work to examine the factors controlling the formation of the equiaxed structure was reported by Northcott&apos; who showed that, for copper alloys frozen unidirectionally with a given ingot practice, the alloying element influenced the length of columnar crystals and the extent of the equiaxed structure. Northcott showed that alloys with a wider freezing range more readily produced the equiaxed structure. The nucleation process can be important in producing equiaxed structures; frequently an alloy which readily solidifies with an entirely columnar structure will produce an entirely equiaxed structure when a nucleating agent is added to the melt.&apos; The formation of the equiaxed structure was attributed by Winegard and chalmers3 to the presence of constitutional supercooling; that is, a region of liquid in front of the growing solid could have a temperature below its equilibrium liquidus temperature. Thus, with a small enough temperature gradient in the liquid, it was suggested that the presence of constitutional supercooling may be sufficient to bring about the nuclea-tion necessary for the formation of an equiaxed structure. Although this explanation is plausible, and may be relevant in many ingots, Walker has described an experiment&apos; for which constitutional supercooling seems to be an unlikely cause of nucleation. A Ni-20 pct Cu alloy, repeatedly undercooled more than 50"C, was crystallized and found to show the typical colum-nar-equiaxed structure. The separation between the liquidus and the solidus for the alloy is 40°C. Thus, in this experiment the nucleation required for the formation of the equiaxed structure must have come about in some other way than by the nucleation catalysis constitutional supercooling hypothesis. Chalmers has suggested more recently5 that nuclei (in a typical ingot) are present immediately after pouring and are prevented from redissolving by the constitutional supercooling effect. More recently Uhlman, Seward, Jackson, and ~unt&apos; have shown direct evidence using ice and organic materials that freeze dendritically that the "remelt mechanism" may be an extremely effective crystal multiplication process during the freezing of ingots under conditions involving dendritic growth. JSlia" experimentally demonstrated the detachment of dendrite arms. chernov14 has analyzed the dendrite arm detachment process as a coarsening phenomena driven by the minimization of interphase area. Katta-mis and ~lemings" working with undercooled steel melts give evidence supporting this mechanism. Mechanisms of dendrite arm detachment such as those assisted by convection are believed to be the origin of the macrostructures obtained in this study. This study makes no attempt to distinguish the relative contributions of these mechanisms. The object of the present work was to obtain accurate temperature measurements during the solidification of an ingot and to correlate these measurements with the formation of equiaxed grains in the resulting ingot structures. Similar previous work is very limited. The measurements carried out by Northcott are neither sufficiently extensive nor sufficiently accurate for any interpretation. Plaskett and winegard7 carried out experiments on A1-Mg alloys in which they observed values of the temperature gradient, G, in the liquid and rate of freezing, R (for a given alloy solute content Co), at the transition from a columnar to an equiaxed structure. They reported that equiaxed crystals were produced at values of G/G approximately proportional to the solidus composition. Similar experiments using Pb-Sn alloys carried out by £111011" showed a linear relation between G/R and the solidus composition. However, the thermocouples were in the mold wall rather than in the melt and, in one case, ingot surfaces were examined. There is ambiguity in the meaning of the values of G and R measured in all these experiments. APPARATUS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared by induction melting 99.999 pct Sn and 99.999 pct Pb to form a Sn-0.5 wt pct Pb alloy in air in a graphite crucible and casting into a cylindrical graphite mold 6 in. long, 1 in. in diarn , and with a & in. wall thickness. WITHIN the last three years, aerial mapping has made wonderful progress. Its three sources of development in North America may be enumerated as follows: (1) The work of the U. S. Army Air. Service and Corps of Engineers at the McCook Experimental Field, Dayton, Ohio. This is generally regarded as the backbone of this class of endeavor in the United States. (2) In Canada, a great deal has been accomplished in a practical way by methods that have not even been tried out in the United States. Under the leadership of the late Doctor Deville, the Dominion Land Surveyors have turned out reconnaissance maps of large areas at very, small cost. (3) Private capital has contributed a great deal toward development of aerial mapping in a practical way in the United States. Prominent in this regard stands the Fairchild Aerial Surveys, Inc. which has spent large sums in research and development work, especially in the construction of aerial cameras. Its camera is, at present, the official camera of the U. S. Army and Navy Air Services, also, of the Canadian and Brazilian governments. Aerial photographic surveying is a flexible process and adapted to a variety of uses. To date, it has proved. of direct practical value for engineering projects such as reservoir and power transmission surveys, railroad location, drainage, harbor front studies; also, for many commercial purposes, tax assessment, city planning, forest surveys, and lawsuits. In a few instances, aerial photographs have been used successfully by geologists as base maps on which to record field observations, thereby dispensing with pacing and compass surveys. There is reason to believe that, eventually, the aerial map will find wide application in the work of geologists. The reason for advancing this opinion is that aerial maps have, in other fields, proved more complete as regards detail than maps made by standard processes of surveying and drafting, and often are more accurate than the latter. At the present time, five distinct uses are being made of aerial photographs: There is the "oblique" photograph taken at an angle with the horizon; it is used extensively for illustrations in newspapers, magazines, and advertisements. Also, for reconnaissance purposes, it has been found of great practical value. For illustrating reports of engineers and geologists, it offers many obvious advantages. In the Canadian Surveys, maps have been compiled from oblique photographs.

Many experimental and theoretical investigations have been made on the processes involved in annealing and recrystallization of metals. Most of these, however, have treated the time element as constant and heat-treatments used have been for relatively short times. Aside from the early work by Carpenter and Elam,&apos; the few that have investigated the effect of time on the processes have usually done so for fairly short time periods. During recent years the growing interest in long-time creep properties of metals and alloys under stress has made increasingly important a better knowledge of the recrystallization during prolonged heating. The recrystallization temperature of 70-30 brass given by Clark and White" in 1932 was somewhat above 400°F. (204°C.) but under 500" (260°C.), whereas in our laboratory recrystallization has been observed in creep specimens at 204°C., the lowest temperature of Clark and White&apos;s range. Since the creep properties are quite different above and below the recrystallization temperature, erroneous conclusions can readily be drawn by the application of short-time recrystallization data to creep problems. It was thus considered of both practical and theoretical value to make long-time annealing studies near the minimum recrystallization temperature. In this way useful additions could be made to data on recrystallization temperatures and, since the reactions in this range are relatively slow, additional insight could be obtained into the factors involved in annealing. Several comprehensive reviews of recrystallization processes have been written,3-6 therefore only a brief review of the generally accepted facts will be given here. Though the effects of heat-treatment usually are expressed as related to observations with varying temperatures, it is logical to assume that the same order of occurrence will exist with time as a variable. The flow of fluids in stratified porous systems, in which adjacent layers of the system are in communication over part or all of their common interface, in many instances involves crossflow between layers. A theoretical study has been made of the unsteady-state flow of slightly compressible fluids during depletion of bounded stratified porous systems. Consideration has been restricted to single-phase flow, with negligible capillary and gravity effects. Analytical expressions have been derived for pressure distribution and for (luxes at the producing face in two-layer systems with complete fluid communication between layers. These expressions occur in the form of double Fourier and Fourier-Bessel series. The method of extending the solution to any number of layers is demonstrated by deriving the equation for pressure distribution in a three-layer system. On the basis of the exact results for two-layer systems, certain generalizations regarding the behavior of stratified systems in general are presented. The performance of stratified systems, in terms of cumulative flux as a function of time, is shown to lie at all times between bounds established from single-layer theory. The upper bound is given by treating the system as a single layer with arithmetic average physical properties. The corresponding lower bound is the summation of the fluxes from each layer as treated individually. Variation in performance of stratified systems between the upper and lower bounds is determined by the extent to which crossflow occurs in the system. The principal parameters affecting the amount of crossflow are the vertical permeability of the system, the ratio of system thickness to "radius of drainage" and, for radial systems, the ratio of system thickness to interior radius. At very early times, the system performance is near the lower bound. As time and the radius of drainage increase, the per- formance tends toward the upper bound. INTRODUCTION One of the principal problems confronting the reservoir engineer today is the incorporation of the effect of reservoir heterogeneity into predictions of reservoir performance. The first part of this problem is the characterization of the actual reservoir heterogeneity in a mathematically useful manner.1, 2 It is then necessary to calculate the effect of this heterogeneity on the system performance. It is frequently possible to estimate this effect by comparison with the known behavior of an idealized system. One such idealized system is the stratified or "layer-cake" model. Many studies have been made of the behavior of stratified systems, from both a theoretical and experimental standpoint. The great majority of the theoretical studies have been concerned with systems of separated layers, with no fluid crossflow. Among the more noteworthy of such theoretical papers is that recently published by Lefkovits, et al,3 in which a comprehensive analysis was presented for the behavior of bounded stratified systems which are unconnected except at the wellbore. Three recent references have dealt with stratified systems including the effect of crossflow. Jacquard4 has presented mathematical derivations pertaining to depletion of two layer systems producing at constant rate. A doctoral dissertation by Katz5 contains analytical solutions and tables of results for pressure distribution and fluid flux during constant-terminal-pressure depletion of two-layer and three-layer systems with crossflow, together with tables of eigenvalues necessary in the computations. The dissertation also presents results from experimental studies of stratified systems using a heat-transfer analog model. This paper is largely based on the material in this dissertation. AT the Cleveland meeting of the Institute in October, 1912, I had the honor to present a paper outlining the conditions surrounding the charcoal iron industry, and giving some of the results of an investigation started about three years ago for the purpose of determining the reason for the poor reputation of the Lake Superior charcoal irons as compared with the Southern and Eastern irons. In that paper I explained the effect of high carbon on quality, and tried to make clear that that paper was a preliminary one, as we felt convinced that we should eventually discover other factors affecting quality. The progress of the investigation has brought out facts that seem to us of the utmost importance practically and theoretically, and the purpose of the present paper is to present these facts with the proofs which seem to us to establish them. The closing year of the nineteenth century saw the publication of the first definite and connected statement of the relationship between the cast irons and the steels.&apos; The metallurgical world was ready to accept the fundamental unity of these two series, acceptance being greatly hastened by Professor Howe&apos;s classic paper, The Constitution of Cast Iron, presented at the Richmond meeting of the Institute, February, 1901.

ONE of the events of note in mineral industry education circles during the year was the summer school for engineering teachers, devoted to mining and metallurgical engineering, which was conducted by the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education in co¬operation with the University of Wisconsin. It was in charge of Prof. Harry P. Hammond, director of the summer school, and Prof. Richard S. McCaffery of the University of Wisconsin. It was attended by 63 people, and practically every educational institution offering mineral industry courses had representatives present. The session was successful and those in attendance spoke highly of the pro¬gram and results obtained. The Mineral Industry Education Division cooperated with the S.P.E.E. in this project. Prof. Hammond will discuss the purpose and results of this session at the February meeting.

COAL occupied a large place in the technical sessions of the Institute at its annual meeting for in addition to three sessions specifically de- voted to coal the two sessions on mine ventilation and the two on ground movement and subsidence, which are reported under their own headings, were primarily concerned with coal. The first session on coal was a joint one with the Iron and Steel Division, on Wednesday afternoon, with F. H. Crockard and J. R. Campbell presiding as joint chairmen and the latter actually officiating. The principal topic of discussion was G. S. Scott&apos;s paper "Evaluation of Coal for the Making of Blast- Furnace Coke," which has been published as T. P. 159. The author made a brief statement of its con- tents to start the discussion and the chairman, after briefly reviewing it himself, called on C. A. Meissner to start the discussion. He briefly reviewed the economic factors in the use of coal for coke-making, saying that not only .does the removal of 1 per cent of ash from the coal reduce the cost of pig iron 12 or 13c. per ton, but it also permits coke of satisfactory structures to be made from a coal which otherwise could not be used. He stressed the importance of uniformity in blast-furnace fuel and discussed the benefit of mixing different coals as raw material for the coke oven and cited experience with Illinois coals.

ONE of the problems that confronts the chronicler of the Porphyry story is to determine the date from which Morenci should be regarded as one of the group. The mines have the distinction of being the first operated in Arizona for copper. A small smelter was in operation as early as 1873 and in the eighties two smelters accounted for a substantial production ranging from 3,000,000 to 6,000,000 lb. per year. The first concentrator was built in 1886, but the ores were principally oxidized, and direct smelting ore still supplied most of the production. As early as 1893, the mining of somewhat leaner porphyry ores, containing copper in the form of the sulphide mineral, chalcocite, was commenced; but these still were of comparatively high grade and the concentrators were plants of 100 to 400 tons daily capacity. Moreover, the backbone of operations was still the production of rich oxidized ores for direct smelting. They assayed 10 to 15 per cent copper and the sulphide milling ores assayed 3 to 4 per cent. A significant comment appears in the Copper Handbook for 1908. Speaking of the Arizona Copper Co., Ltd., which was to become the most important component of the present Morenci enterprise, the editor, Horace Stevens, says: "A tremendous amount of ore is in sight, ore reserves . . . being estimated at 10,370,600 tons . . . " It seems fair to infer from this that the property was not yet regarded as an immense low-grade mine, but that the copper content of perhaps 70 lb, to the ton made an ore of "medium " grade even according to the standards of the time. The hot-stage metallographic method has been employed to determine radial growth rates of upper and lower bainite. Lower bainite appears to grow as individual plates that increase in both length and thickness while upper bainite grows as sheaves of closely spaced plates or needles. A discontinuity in the temperature dependence of the growth rate appears to be associated with the transition from upper to lower bainite and stepped quenching experiments suggest that lower bainite will not continue to grow when the temperature is raised to the upper range. Thus, a single process does not appear to control the growth of both upper and lower bainite. A tentative model based on the forces acting on a dislocation interface is proposed to account for the slow growth of bainite. It has been recognized since the early studies of Davenport and Bain that a close relationship exists between the martensite and bainite transformations in steels. However, diffusion of carbon during the transformation has lead to considerable controversy concerning the reaction mechanism.1-7 Many studies4,5,7-9 have emphasized the structura and kinetic aspects of the bainite reaction and, in particular, the difference observed between the two forms of bainite—frequently termed upper and lower bainite. A kinetic difference between the two types of bainite has been revealed in the activation energy determined from the overall reaction;4,5 however, many difficulties arise in an interpretation of these activation energies since a number of temperature dependent factors contribute to the kinetics of the overall reaction. The displacive surface relief10 accompanying the bainite reaction permits a separation of the nuclea-tion and growth contributions to the reaction and allows the kinetics of the growth process to be examined. Several investigations of this type have been conducted; however, they have been restricted to the low temperature range.3&apos;6&apos;11 Here, bainite plates are observed to grow slowly in both length and width. The present investigation extends such studies to include the upper bainite range. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Materials. The composition of the steels studied in this investigation are presented in Table I. The range of composition permitted a study of the effect of carbon content on the growth rate of upper bainite in the 9 pct Ni steels and consideration of both upper and lower bainite in the higher carbon steels. These steels were received as hot-rolled rounds and were forged to approximately 1/2 in. thick plates for preparation of metallographic specimens. In order to produce an essentially zero carbon steel, Steel A was decarburized in wet hydrogen at 1550°F for 15 days with the result tabulated as Steel AD. Experimental Procedure. In order to study the slow growth of the displacive transformation product, a commercially available Leitz hot stage was modified to permit heating of the specimen by its own resistance in a manner similar to that employed by other investigators.6 The furnace chamber was maintained at a pressure of 2 to 3 X 10-5 mm Hg prior to austenitizing at 2000° ± 12° F for 5 min. Samples could be cooled from the austenitizing to the transformation temperature in approximately 15 sec and the progress of transformation was recorded with a 9 cm by 12 cm single frame camera or a 16 mm movie camera. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Growth Characteristics. The general growth characteristics observed in this investigation were analogous to those reported previously.3,6,11 Typical growth sequences for the high temperature and low temperature forms are illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5. This paper constitutes a preliminary report on experimental work done to date on the anode-furnace treatment of blister copper containing relatively high percentages of nickel. The investigation has not been completed but results obtained to date are considered of sufficient interest to warrant publication. Blister copper treated by the Ontario Refining Co. originates from the Copper Cliff smelter of The International Nickel Company of Canada, of which the former is a wholly-owned subsidiary. The blister as received contains from 0.50 to 1.50 per cent Ni, and in this respect differs from that treated by other refineries on this continent. During the anode-furnace treatment, only a portion of the nickel content is removed, and of the amount remaining in the anodes a varying percentage is found in the anode slimes. This necessitates a more extensive treatment than ordinary nickel-free material. Sometimes it is necessary to repeat roasting and leaching operations several times before the nickel content is low enough to permit the slimes to proceed to the dore furnace. This, besides increasing treatment charges, causes greater selenium stack losses and involves a longer tie-up of precious-metal values. Therefore this investigation was undertaken with the aim of determining the factors influencing the diversion of nickel into the anode sludge. From experience it was known that by keeping the nickel content of anodes at 0.55 to 0.60 per cent maximum a relatively satisfactory slime resulted. One avenue of attack therefork was developing improved elimination in the anode-furnace treatment so that the anode content mentioned above was not exceeded. Another angle was to improve the solubility, during electrolysis, of the nickel constituent in the anodes, thus decreasing the percentage diverted to slimes. It may be mentioned here that nickel dissolving electrochemically and entering the electolyte presents no difficulty from a treatment standpoint. Both of these approaches were studied and are discussed separately below.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory executed 19 intermediate scale cratering experiments in oil shale at the Colony Mine in Garfield County, Colorado. These experiments have led to a better under- standing of fracture characteristics and fragmentation of & - oil shale by use of a conventional high explosive. Geologic site characterization included detailed mapping, coring, and sample analyses. Site-specific geology was observed to be a major influence on the resulting crater geometry. The joint patterns at the experimental site frequently defined the final crater symmetry. Secondary influences included vugs, lithology changes, and grade fluctuations in the local stratigraphy. Most experiments, in both the rib and floor, were conducted to obtain data to investigate the fragmentation results within the craters. The rubble was screened for fragment- size distributions. Geologic features in proximity to the explosive charge had minimal effect on the rubble due to the overpowering effect of the detonation. However, these same features became more influential on the fracture and rubble characteristics with greater distances from the shothole. Postshot cores revealed a direct relationship between the grade of the oil shale and its susceptibility to fracturing. The Colony Mine experiments have demonstrated the significant role of geology in high explosive/oil shale interaction. It is probable that this role will have to be considered for larger applications to blast patterns and potential problems in retort stability in the future of oil shale development.

INTRODUCTION Fracture toughness, KIC, is an intrinsic material property and is a measure of the energy required to create new surface area in a material. Fracture toughness measurements can be made for a wide range of rock types (Ouchterlony, 1980). As a measure of energy of comminution, fracture toughness might be used for more sensitive predictions of Tunnel Boring Machine (TRM) performance than are possible with other index measures in current use. This paper describes part of an ongoing, comprehensive, analytical/experimental program aimed at evaluation of KIC in such a role. The program includes efforts to: 1. Provide a firm analytical basis for a test specimen geometry: the core-derived short-rod. 2. Develop simple, inexpensive testing equipment and techniques. 3. Evaluate the accuracy of the above by testing rock and other materials and comparing the measured fracture toughness with those obtained by other methods. 4. Measure fracture toughness of a substantial number of different rocks from three ongoing TBM projects. 5. Compare fracture toughness results with other strength measures. 6. Compare all test results with observed TBM performance in the three projects. Presented here are summaries of all but the last of these efforts. Comparative evaluation of KIC as a more senstive rock property for TBM performance prediction will be the subject of the oral presentation and a subsequent paper.

AIR has been cooled, heated, washed; humidified and dehumidified for many purposes and in many industries. At a number of metal mines air is conditioned to reduce the high humidity and unbearable heat found in deep workings, and at some mines air is washed to allay siliceous dust. Steam is introduced into the intake air at many coal mines, particularly in winter, for the purpose of keeping loose coal dust so moistened that the hazard of an explosion is lessened. This paper will describe a further successful application of air conditioning in a coal mine, where, for over three years, all intake air has been cooled to a constant temperature for the sole purpose of preventing roof falls.

SUMMARY Initial interest in using solutions of ammonium salts to leach native copper was documented in notes from an AIME meeting in 1871; By 1916-1917, application of the NH3-CO2-H2O system to recover nonferrous metals attained commercial significance, when it was used as a process for copper recovery by Kennecott Copper Corporation and Calumet & Hecla Mining Company. The Caron work in the early 1920s, Freeport Sulphur Company’s achievements leaching Cuban laterites during World War II, out- standing accomplishments in both eastern and western Canada, recovery of manganese related to the work of Dean -- all serve as landmarks as this One Century Review surveys a base for future technology. Current emphasis on compatibility of metals-producing systems with the need to meet environmental protection criteria provides special encouragement to researchers and engineers to find accept- able ways of recovering metals. The ever-present demand of management to design, build and operate facilities on a profitable basis provides additional impetus to apply information from the technical literature to that need. Examination of the general approach to this paper will reveal much that is firm and positive with respect to empirical results -- extractions, recoveries, amenability to familiar proven equipment and materials of construction common to the industry. Although there are many references, there are gaps in the basic scientific data that if filled could lead to even more usefulness; the paper attempts to indicate where further information is needed.
