THE subject of recrystallization and grain growth has been much studied and the literature on this subject is numerous. Such studies have been mostly carried out by metallographic examination of X ray methods. Since recrystallization and grain growth involve elementary atomic processes, their mechanism can best be elucidated by a study of some properties which can be readily traced back in terms of such atomic processes. Prior to a detailed quantitative study, however, it is necessary to explore first the possibility and practicability of utilizing any particular property for obtaining the desired information. We have pointed out in a preceding article' that the internal friction of cold-worked metals is extremely high during recrystallization and it drops abru~tlv once the recrystallization is complete. ~reviois work has also shown that the viscosity of grain boundaries in a recrystallized specimen at a given temperature is raised by grain growth.' It seems thus that the measurements of internal friction may furnish a useful tool for the study of the mechanism of recrystallization and grain growth in terms of elementary atomic processes. The purpose of this paper is to report results of a study along this line. We will demonstrate that the internal friction method does give results in agreement with those furnished by conventional metallographic examinations. Once such a correlation has been established, we will be in a position to take further steps to achieve new information which cannot be achieved by conventional methods. The measurements of internal friction were made using apparatus and procedures similar to those used in the preceding article. All the measurements were made under such a small stress level that the internal friction is independent of stress level. The frequency of vibration is, unless mentioned otherwise, about one cycle per second in all cases. Internal Friction and Recrystallization Complete Recrystallization Temperature: Fig. 1 shows the internal friction curve during annealing of a few metals: aluminum, alpha brass and iron. These curves were determined in the following manner. In the curve for aluminum, internal friction measurements were performed upon. 99.991 aluminum subjected to 95 pct reduction area. The internal friction was first measured at room temperature. The specimen was then annealed at 50°C

As the heart of a copper-producing complex, a smelter converts raw copper concentrates or leach-plant precipitates, or both, into blister copper. A typical smelter feed also contains matte chips, flue dust, flux, and lime. All these materials vary widely in their characteristics, ranging from sub-micron to lumps, from slurry to dust, from abrasive to corrosive, and free-flowing to adhesive. Handling all these materials becomes even more problematic since most of the world's open-pit copper mines are located in a semi-arid zone where rainfall is minimal.

THE arrangement of a flow of cyanide-pulp through Pachuca tanks in agitation, so as to permit a continuous process, instead of alternate filling, agitation, and emptying, has been proposed by various writers within the last two years, and more particularly by A. T. Grothe, agent for the Brown patents on Pachuca tanks in Mexico. It was first put into practice, I believe, by M. H. Kuryla at the Esperanza mine in El Oro, Mexico. The starting of agitation in Pachuca tanks after filling may offer no serious difficulties with ores which do not settle rapidly in such tall tanks; and the adaptation of the tanks to continuous agitation under such conditions may give simply a somewhat more convenient method of treatment and greater agitation-capacity for a given number of tanks, because of the saving -of time lost in filling and discharging. But in the treatment .of pulp which tends to settle rapidly, as in the cyaniding of concentrates or of the whole pulp of ores containing heavy sulphides, the packing of the slime at the bottom may, cause much trouble. The use of the radial air-pipe attachments near the top of the cone and of the air-valve outside of the air-lift .tube at the bottom may obviate the difficulty to some extent; but the action of the radial air-pipes on the cone-sides is that -of a sand-blast, and their continuous use cuts through the tanks. Moreover, even when these pipes are used, some pulps will pack tightly below them in the cones. Under such conditions the use of Pachuca tanks with intermittent filling and discharging becomes a troublesome process. Time is lost in ,starting agitation; large quantities of compressed air are wasted; pulp is blown over the tank-tops; and not infrequently it may be necessary to dig out the bottoms of tanks by hand. This trouble is the only important one occurring in the use of Pachuca tanks; and, since it is caused by intermittent filling, the .arrangement of a continuous flow of pulp from tank to tank,

Stress control methods of mining have been developed separately in at least four different parts of the world in entirely different types of mining -- coal, trona, salt and potash -- during the decade of the 1960s. They all utilized yield pillars as tools for ground control. Today, yield pillars are becoming widely used in under- ground mines in a variety of geological conditions. Stress control methods are effective in stabilizing openings in weak, complex grounds, especially at greater depths. Their advantage is that they utilize existing ground media to stabilize mine openings by altering the stress distribution patterns around the openings, by controlling design parameters such as room width, pillar geometry, and excavation sequence, rather than by using a conventional means of artificial ground support such as roof bolts, cribbing, or arches. Stress control methods, therefore, are suitable for both advance and retreat mining, including total extraction mining. Adaptation of these methods results in substantially greater safety, productivity, and ecnomy over conventional methods. These methods are based on scrutiny of the actual stress conditions in the ground, by both in-situ measurement and computer simulation. This paper provides a summary of stress control methods as developed over the last ten years. The field examples are limited largely to salt and potash mining applications, although the method has been used successfully in other mining applications. The examples illustrate that stress control methods actually address general ground weakness problems -- separation at discontinuity planes, swelling by shale expansion, deterioration by brittle fracture, and interference by ground water. That is, although the principle is developed mainly with reference to salt and potash applications, it is generally applicable to weak ground.

No one would maintain that all ore deposits or all deposits of useful minerals have been formed by the same processes. Generally they have originated by special processes of concentration but these may be of many different kinds. Some deposits have their origin in chemical or biochemical processes of concentration in rivers, lakes or seas, others, developed on land by, means of chemical reactions of surface waters on various forms of rocks. Certain insoluble substances remained behind; others were dissolved and precipitated in favorable places. This action -proceeded in the realm of the oxidizing surface waters or in the deeper zones to which the waters from the surface could find their way. Examples of the latter kind may be found in the extensive copper and vanadium deposits of some sedimentary beds or in the lead and zinc deposits of certain broad limestone strata. In these instances the evidence for any other mode of origin would seem to be very weak indeed.1 Nor does it seem possible to deny that circulating waters may form deposits of the more common metals along fissures after having dissolved many constituents from paths traversed. Another very large class has been formed by magnetic processes of concentration. The last 40 years have been a period of intense activity in. the investigation and description of a vast number of deposits; all modern methods have been employed and the result is an accumulation of data, difficult or impossible to master. It has been a period similar to that in petrography. The generalizations, the able deductions have lagged behind. Evidently several geologists have become weary of this "infinite detail" and a mistrust of the microscope seems to have. arisen. INTRODUCTION In early 1979 Jim Walter Resources, Inc. (JWR) of Brookwood, Alabama approached TMCI Construction, Inc (TMCI) to make a proposal on a program that involved the sinking of up to 10 ventilation shafts of approximately 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter and ranging in depth from 500 to 700 m (1650 to 2300 ft) for the JWR coal mines in Alabama. At this time TMCI was already constructing the first spiral underground bunker (capacity 2000 tons) in North America for the JWR organization at their No. 4 mine in Alabama. The TMCI proposal was based on the use of the mos modern large diameter shaft boring machine rather than sinking the shafts using the conventional drill blast-muck technique. The proposal was made based o: the experiences by the parent company, Thyssen Schachtbau, which has been using this type of machin in Germany for shaft boring since 1971. As a result of the TMCI proposal JWR issued a purchase order to TMCI for the construction of four 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter, concrete lined, unfurnished ventilation shafts ranging in depth from 500 to 700 (1650 to 2300 ft). An order was thus placed with WIRTH Machinen- and Bohrgeraete Fabrik GmbH, in Germany for the manufacture of a model 650/850 E/Sch "Schachtbohrmaschine" (Vertical Shaft Borer = V-mole which arrived on site in Alabama in early 1981. The first V-mole GSB 450/500 was introduced in Germany in 1971 and was capable of enlarging in one step a pre-drilled 1.2 m (4 ft) pilot hole to 4.5 - 5.0 m (14.7 - 16.4 ft). This machine has sunk 9 staple shafts and deepened one surface shaft for a total of 2360 m (7740 ft) of shafts. On the last shaft boring operation in 1978 the machine was converted as an experiment to drill without a pilot hol using a hydraulic pumping system to remove the cutting debris. A second generation machine, the SB VI 500/650, was introduced in 1977 for enlarging the pilot hole to a range of 5.0 - 6.5 m (16.4 - 21.3 ft) diameter. This machine is still in operation and has already drilled well over 2000 m (6500 ft) of shaft. The third generation of V-mole, the SB VII 650/85( for diameters from 6.5 to 8.5 m (21.3 to 27.9 ft) was: commissioned in May 1980 and has been used for two surface shaft deepenings totalling 606 m (1990 ft) with another scheduled for 1982. The main advantages favouring the use of such V-moles were identified as: 1) A reduction in manpower to the crew required in a conventional shaft sinking operation. 2) A considerable reduction in time to complete a shaft compared to conventional techniques. 3) The use of the V-mole eliminates many of the hazards encountered in conventional sinking. Based on the successful performance of the first three V-moles in Germany, Thyssen Schachtbau decided to employ this principle abroad. In 1980 a second machine of the third generation was built and is now operated by TMCI Construction, Inc. in Alabama. The first shaft was completed at the end of 1981 and this paper describes the method of operation including some unique aspects not attempted on prior V-mole operations and some of the statistics arising out of the experiences during the first shaft boring operation. THE NO. 7 MINE FAN SHAFT SITE Jim Walter Resources, Inc. was formed in 1970 to exploit the coal field in Alabama on the southern tip of the Appalachian coal field. The coal reserves amount to around 650 million tons of mainly good quality coking coal of which about 350 million tons are to be extracted over the next 30 years. Shaft sinking and preparatory work began in 1972, and at present 6 mines are producing around 5.4 million t.p.a. Annual production is to expand to 10 million t.p.a. as soon as possible, and the ventilation shafts to be sunk by TMCI play a vital role towards attaining this goal. The first shaft site is located at the No.7 mine, near Brookwood, Alabama. The actual location of the shaft relative to the production shafts is shown on the mine plan (Fig. 1), which also shows the room-and-pillar extraction system used at present. The mine plan further shows the conveyor route used for the muck removal. The geological survey showed that the strata consisted of horizontal layers of mainly sandstone, sandy shale and shale interspersed with several coal seams. The seam being extracted at the No. 7 mine is a combined seam made up of the Blue Creek and Mary Lee seams at a depth of 513 m (1682 ft) and having an average seam thickness of about 2 m (6 ft). At the beginning of September 1980 the surface site preparation and pre-grouting work was completed by JWR, and TMCI was able to commence with Stage I of the shaft sinking program - the drilling of the pilot hole.

INTRODUCTION OWENS LAKE is at present a source of important nonmetallic minerals, sodium carbonate (soda ash, Na2CO3); sodium sesquicarbonate (trona, Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H20) and borax, (Na2B407.10H2O). Owens Lake is a closed basin in the southern part of Inyo County, California, at the southern end of Owens Valley, east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and west of the Coso and Inyo Mountains. Broadly considered, it is in the Great Basin area, but at no time was it a part of Lake Lahontan. CLOSED BASINS Closed basins are phenomena of arid or semiarid regions where outflow is considerably less than inflow and where accordingly soluble salts concentrate in residual liquid. When inflowing waters originate in areas where the rocks are predominantly marine sediments, the residual basin liquid is primarily a chloride brine; if the rocks are largely igneous, the residual brine tends to be alkaline containing carbonates, and sometimes borates as well. Since normally, both types of rocks occur in regions contiguous to closed basins, residual liquids do not often fit into the two broad divisions mentioned. No two residual brines are exactly alike, just as no two ore deposits are exactly alike. Even out of the same closed basin, it is possible to get widely different analyses of liquids since underground and surface flows, as well as local evaporation rates and other conditions might have a marked influence on residual-liquid compositions. At Searles Lake, The American Potash and Chemical Corporation is building a plant to process a lower-level brine which is considerably higher in sodium carbonate and borax, and lower in potassium chloride, than that company has processed for many years. F. W. Clarke1 has classified waters of closed basins as follows: I Chloride type; largely sodium chloride (NaCI) and of oceanic type, such as Great Salt Lake. Related is the Dead Sea, a bittern residue of magnesium, potassium and sodium chlorides. 2. Sulphate type; largely sodium sulphate (Na2S04) with considerable sodium chloride such as Sevier Lake, Utah; Laramie Lakes, Wyoming; Dale Lake, California. 3. Carbonate type; high in carbonates and fairly high in sulphates, such as Moses Lake, Eastern Washington; and the Nebraska Potash Lakes. 4. Carbonate-chloride type; lower in carbonates than type 3 and about equally rich in sulphates, such as Pyramid Lake, Nevada. 5. Sulphate-Carbonate type; quite high in sulphates and carbonates, such as Pelican Lake, Oregon. 6. Triple type; considerable quantities of carbonates, sulphates and chlorides

ANTIMONY Antimony (Sb) has been used since the early Egyptian dynasties. Prior to World War I, total demand amounted to only 6000 to 7000 tons per year (tpy). Wartime uses and rapid rise of industrialization in the Northern Hemisphere nations have pushed world antimony use to the 78,000-tpy level. An overwhelming supply of low-cost antimonial resources in the Sino-Russian bloc countries has and will continue to have a major impact on availability and price to users outside the bloc. Table 14.4.1 shows trends in world production, United States production and consumption, and prices. Demand Antimony is used principally as an alloy in lead-based metals and other alloys. Pure metallic antimony usage is small and is confined to such areas as laboratory and electronic applications. Lead-antimony alloys are used in automobile storage batteries, chemical pumps, and pipes, tank linings, roofing material, and cable sheaths. The metal increases the hardness of lead, and, for such uses as foundry printing type, reduces shrinkage for casting and lowers the melting point. Antimonial oxides are used for ceramic purposes, white paint pigments, glass forming, textile finishing, fire retardants in military clothing, matches, and solder. Wartime applications include use as hardener for bullets, an element for tracer bullets, and ingredient for producing dense white smoke for visual markers. A small but rapidly growing use for antimony is for metallic compounds in semiconductors and thermoelectric devices. In the United States demand for antimony is about evenly divided between metallic end-use markets and nonmetallic markets. In metallic end uses, antimonial lead accounts for 27% of total metallic and nonmetallic use; in nonmetallic areas major uses are flame retardants (15%) which is the fastest growing market, plastics (13 % ), and ceramics and glass (11%). While antimony has advantages in most of its applications, there are uses in which other materials can be substituted, including: mercury, titanium, lead, zinc, chromium, tin, and zirconium in paints and pigments; tin in sheathings; calcium in battery plates; and bismuth in type metal. Supply Antimony is produced from both antimony ores and as a byproduct of smelting other ores. The principal ore mineral is stibnite (Sb2S3), along with its oxidized antimonial minerals and derivatives which occur in small discontinuous replacement veins or fissure vein implacements. In these days, when detailed investigations of stratigraphy, structure, and sand conditions so frequently result in the discovery of new oil fields, and applause from oil companies and the public, geologists do well to walk humbly, and punctiliously to admit that the geologic principles controlling the distribution of oil and gas have as yet been discovered only in part, and that what remains yet to be learned is probably vastly more than what is already known. The few experiments already attempted have been fragmentary, and somewhat desultory, and however positive each of us may be with respect to certain theoretical conclusions, many of the fundamental questions as to the origin and mode of occurrence of petroleum are subject to radical disagreement. Of the chemical changes attending the generation of petroleum from organic matter, little is actually known. Most of the postulated formulas are liable to be misleading, through ignorance of essential factors. Open-minded-ness is therefore a prime essential at the present stage of our science. Nevertheless, adopting the hypothesis that oil originates in some manner fundamentally connected with the organic theory, and in possible departure from such open-mindedness, the writer will pay no attention to the so-called inorganic theory, since every attempt to apply this theory to the study of old oil fields, or to the discovery of new ones, affords cumulative evidence of its inadequacy. In this paper, some of the factors affecting the occurrence of petroleum that the writer believes worthy of consideration by the prospector for oil in any new region will be discussed. Some of these, which arc less generaLly understood, will be considercd somewhat in detail. Other points, the significance of which cannot now be determined, require more field study, and for that reason are here brought to the attention of the field geologist. On the other hand, certain theoretical points which do not bear especially on the oil possibilities of a new region will be given little or no attention. The main topics that will be discussed are: (1) sufficiency of carbonaceous detritus and residues in the oil-forming rocks; (2) stage of carbonization of the organic matter in the oil-bearing formations; (3) folding of the strata; (4) thickness of sedimentary formations; (5) conditions of deposition.

As fluids move through a wellbore, there is transfer of heat between fluids and the earth due to the diflerence between fluid and geothermal temperatures. This type of heat transmission is involved in drilling and in all producing operations. In certain cases, quantitative knowledge of wellbore heat transmission is very important. This paper presents an approximate solution to the wellbore heat-transmission problem involved in injection of hot or cold fluids. The solution permits estimation of the temperature of fluids, tubing and casing as a function of depth and time. The result is expressed in simple algebraic form suitable for slide-rule calculation. The solution assumes that heat transfer in the wellbore is steady-state, while heat transfer to the earth will be unsteady radial conduction. Allowance is made for heat resistances in the wellbore. The method used may be applied to derivation of other heat problems such as flow through multiple strings in a wellbore. Comparisons of computed and field results are presented to establish the usefulness of the solution. INTRODUCTION During the past few years, considerable interest has been generated in hot-fluid-injection oil-recovery methods. These methods depend upon application of heat to a reservoir by means of a heat-transfer medium heated at the surface. Clearly, heat losses between the surface and the injection interval could be extremely important to this process. Not quite so obvious is the fact that every injection and production operation is accompanied by transmission of heal between wellbore fluids and the earth. Previously, the interpretation of temperature logs',' has been the main purpose of wellbore heat studies. The only papers dealing specifically with long-time injection operations are those of Moss and White3 and Lesem, et al.' The purpose of the present study is to investigate wellbore heat transmission to provide engineering methods useful in both production and injection operations, and basic techniques useful in all wellbore heat-transmission problems. The approach is similar to that of Moss and White:' DEVELOPMENT The transient heat-transmission problem under consideration is as follows. Let us consider the injection of a fluid down the tubing in a well which is cased to the top of the injection interval. Assuming fluid is injected at known rates and surface temperatures, determine the temperature of the injected fluid as a function of depth anti time. Consideration of the heat transferred from the injected fluid to the formation leads to the following equations. For liquid, Eqs. 1, 1A and 2 are developed in the Appendix. These equations were developed under the assumption that physical and thermal properties of the earth and wellbore fluids do not vary with temperature, that heat will transfer radially in the earth and that heat transmission in the wellbore is rapid compared to heat flow in the formation and. thus, can be represented by steady-state solutions. Special cases of this development have been presented by Nowakl and Moss and White.3 Both references are recommended for excellent background material. Nowak' presents very useful information concerning the effect of a shut-in period on subsequent temperatures. Since one purpose of this paper is to present methods which may be used to derive approximate solutions for heat-transmission problems associated to those specifically considered here, a brief discussion of associated heat problems is also presented in the Appendix. Analysis of the derivation presented in the Appendix will indicate that many terms can be re-defined to modify the solution for application to other problems. Before Eqs. 1, 1A and 2 can be used, it is necessary to consider the significance of the over-all heat-transfer coefficient U and the time function f(t). Thorough discussions of the concept of the over-all heat-transfer coefficient may be found in many references on heat transmission. See McAdams5 or Jakob," for example. Briefly, the over-all coefficient U considers the net- resistance to heat flow offered by fluid inside the tubing, the tubing wall, fluids or solids in the annulus, and the casing wall. The effect of radiant heat transfer from the tubing to the casing and resistance to heat flow caused by scale or wax on the tubing or casing may also be included in the over-all coefficient. According to McAdams, on page 136 of Ref. 5>

MeltiXg procedures for most metals and alloys usually include some provision for the control of oxygen, since this element frequently has some undesirable effect on the properties of the metal or alloy concerned. In the melting of the various bronzes, this is especially true, since oxygen can be introduced into the melt in a number of ways, most of which are difficult to control. In making bronzes from virgin materials, oxygen is usually present in the commercial grades of copper used; electrolytic fire-refined copper ingots usually contain from 0.02 to 0.05 per cent oxygen. When ingot metal or scrap bronze is used in the charge, oxides are almost always present to some degree. Under certain melting conditions and in certain types of melting equipment the atmosphere over the metal may be highly oxidizing. This, of course, may be desirable in the melting practice used, but is certain to introduce appreciable amounts of oxygen into the melt, and that may not be entirely desirable. From the foundry viewpoint oxygen may have several harmful effects on bronzes. The formation of excessive amounts of oxides may produce drossy metal, which, in turn, means dirty castings and a potentially high rejection rate. It is claimed, too, that oxides in the metal may combine with hydrogen to form steam and thereby produce porosity in certain of the bronzes. The presence of certain refractory oxides, such as SnOz, may be undesirable from the viewpoint of making machining difficult, or as possible stress-raisers in the metal matrix. It is often said that excessive oxide present in the liquid metal makes the metal run sluggishly. Since it appears impractical to try to control the amount of oxygen introduced into the metal beyond taking the economical limit of precaution about charging dirty scrap, it would seem' that control of the oxygen content of the liquid metal offers the most promising approach to this problem. This might be done by using slags, or covers, or by the use of some element or compound added to the melt to remove oxygen preferentially. Most aspects of this problem have been considered and considerable work has been done along these lines. A reconsideration of the problem is indicated, however, by the controversial nature of the evidence at hand, especially on the possibility of using a chemical deoxidizer to control the oxygen content of bronzes. Choice of Deoxidizer The choice of the chemical agent selected as a deoxidizer would naturally depend first on the alloy in which it is to ~he used: in this particular case the alloy is Navy gun metal. It is often said that excessive oxide present in the liquid metal makes the metal run sluggishly. Since it appears impractical to try to control the amount of oxygen introduced into the metal beyond taking the economical limit of precaution about charging dirty scrap, it would seem' that control of the oxygen content of the liquid metal offers the most promising approach to this problem. This might be done by using slags, or covers, or by the use of some element or compound added to the melt to remove oxygen preferentially. Most aspects of this problem have been considered and considerable work has been done along these lines. A reconsideration of the problem is indicated, however, by the controversial nature of the evidence at hand, especially on the possibility of using a chemical deoxidizer to control the oxygen content of bronzes. Choice of Deoxidizer The choice of the chemical agent selected as a deoxidizer would naturally depend first on the alloy in which it is to ~he used: in this particular case the alloy is Navy gun metal. INTRODUCTION Rocky Mountain Energy is the mining subsidiary of the Union Pacific Corporation, and has been active m uranium exploration since 1966. Since 1970, RME's uranium activities have been funded 50% by Mono Power, the fuels supply division of Southern California Edision. RME and Mono recognized the need for development of new methods for recovering low grade uranium deposits, and contacted Halliburton Services in regard to in situ leaching, because of Halliburton oil industry experience. As a result, a joint venture between the three parties was formed in 1974. BEAR CREEK The first ISL test was at the Bear Creek deposit in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming, about 60 miles north of Douglas. The mineralized sand is the tertiary Wasatch formation, which is an arkosic sandstone. The sand typically contains about 10% clay. The predominant clay being montmorillonite with some kaolin and illite. The roll front type trends occur along the flanks of old stream channels. This deposit was being considered for exploitation as an open pit mine. Routine amenability testing indicated it was quite amenable to a conventional acid leach, consuming about 50 lbs. of sulfuric acid per ton of ore in an agitation leach, while recovering more than 95% of the uranium. Hydrology testing indicated a permeability of about 1 darcy. The groundwater has a pH of about 8. 0 and TDS of about 1200. Test Facility The Bear Creek test was a summer-only operation, with no effort towards weather-proofing. Uranium was removed from the recovered leach solution by fixed bed ion-exchange columns. Loaded resin was eluted with strong sulfuric acid. The recovery plant was designed for simplicity of operation, with little concern for the grade or form of the yellowcake product. The plant was constructed of PVC piping and valves, fiberglass reinforced tanks, and stainless steel pumps. All waste streams were directed toward a lined evaporation pond. Wellfield The test pattern was a 30 foot radius 5 spot, with wells fully penetrating the 30 foot ore sand to a total depth of about 165 feet. The injection wells were three-inch PVC with slotted casing, while the producer was eight-inch I. D. , with a stainless steel screen. The eight-inch well was necessary in order to accommodate a six-inch stainless steel pump. Wells were cemented using cement baskets, at the top of the sand, to contain a latex acid resistant cement. Leach Conditions The lixiviant generally contained from five to seven gpl sulfuric acid, and about 0. 5 gpl hydrogen peroxide. The pH was generally 1.4 and EMF was usually -550 millivolts. Injection rates were rather variable from well to well, with a total injection rate between 12 and 25 GPM. Production rate was set at 25 GPM, since the production pump could not be throttled more than that. Approximately two pore volumes of solution were injected during the three-month test. Leach Results Injectivity was quite variable, but was generally rather poor, because of poor completion techniques. The problem stemmed from injecting before the injection wells had been completely cleaned of drilling mud. Pregnant solutions averaged about 50 ppm U308, with groundwater dilution varying from 10 to 50%, depending on the injection rate. Injectivity did decline with time, probably as a result of contamination of the well faces. A total of 1000 lbs U308 had been recovered when the test was shut down. This probably represented about 10% of the mineral under leach.

A method is presented that provides a mathematical description of capillary pressure curves and, probably, of differences in pore geometry of samples. The technique is based on the observation that the location and shape of a capillary pressure curve reflect characteristics of the pore structure of the sample. INTRODUCTION It has been noted1-5 that the observed differences in shape and location of capillary pressure curves reflect some basic properties regarding the pore geometry of the samples. For example, according to basic concepts of capillarity, the following statements can be made regarding the location and shape of a capillary pressure curve.* The location of the curve with respect to the (Vb)pc and PC axes is a measure of the interconnected pore volume and of the cross-sectional area of the pore first entered by mercury, respectively. The shape of the curve depends on the interconnection of the pores and the sorting of the pore sizes. It has been the object of this study to use this information as a starting point in an attempt to find a unique mathematical description of the PC — (Vv)p, relations of different samples. It may be expected that parameters in such a relation can then be used to describe differences in pore geometry of these samples. For a practical description of the PC — (Vb)p, relation, however, it appears desirable to describe each curve (i.e., each sample) by a limited number of parameters so that the curves taken from all samples form a family, each member of which is uniquely determined by one single combination of values of all parameters.

In his technical note entitled "Specimen Temperature During Electropolishing of Aluminum Crystals" Dr. Nakada 1 reported that the temperature of his aluminum specimen increased 65°C when it was polished electrolytically; he therefore concluded that the temperature of the specimens used in our work (Nakada's Refs. 4 and 5) similarly increased by this amount. From this he further concluded that the change in plastic-flow characteristics associated with the removal of the surface by electropolishing during deformation were due solely to a temperature effect. We believe that these conclusions are not justified. It is, of course, realized that the amount of the temperature increase is associated with the total heat transfer of the entire system, including the efficiency of the stirring action, heat flow through the grip on the specimen, and so forth. Of great importance is the type of electrolyte used for polishing. For example, in Dr. Nakada's experiment a methanol-perchloric acid solution was used. This solution has a relatively low conductivity and for the current densities of 0.3 amp per sq cm the electrical input appears to be 30 to 40 w. In our research a methanol-nitric acid solution was employed and for the size of specimen employed by Dr. Nakada the power never exceeded 7 w. There are major differences in his test apparatus which also appear to affect the temperature rise. In our case a steel specimen holder was used in order to provide a good heat sink and conduction path. The cathode was a coiled aluminum tube through which a coolant was passed to provide additional cooling capacity near the specimen. The stirrer was placed in a position to obtain maximum cooling efficiency. On the other hand Dr. Nakada used a teflon grip to support the specimen at one end only and a flat copper cathode, thus providing a much less efficient heat sink as compared with the metal grips used in our studies. The relationship between current density and the temperature increase for two sizes of aluminum crystals tested in our tensile apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The temperature measurements were determined from a thermocouple spot-welded to the surface of the specimen. The thermocouple was protected from the acid by means of a thin film of stop-off lacquer which covered just the outer surface of the thermocouple junction. Whereas Dr. Nakada reported a time delay of 8 min to obtain thermal equilibrium, our temperature change occurred in less than 15 sec. This emphasizes the importance of the heat transfer in the entire system. However, readings were taken over a period in excess of 5 min to assure thermal equilibrium. The data given in Fig. 1 were also confirmed by determining the thermal expansion of the specimen in a sensitive creep apparatus. As may be seen, for the smaller specimen the increase in temperature is 8°C for a current density of 1.5 amp per sq in. The majority of our data on the effects of surface removal on the plastic behavior of aluminum were obtained at current-density values at or below this value. Above 1.5 amp per sq in. the temperature rise is uncertain; for under certain conditions, especially in the vicinity of 2 amp per sq in., the anode can become polarized and the current flow is erratic. This condition is easily recognized because wide fluctuations in the creep and stress-strain data make it virtually impossible to obtain reliable results, a condition which was always avoided in our work. The temperature increase for the larger specimen is less than that of the smaller specimens below a current density of 1.5 amp per sq in. At a current density of 2 amp per sq in. the temperature increased 13°C. The above temperature data are in accord with observations made during creep experiments. Using a transducer capable of detecting strain in the order of 10 -6, temperature changes in excess of 8°C were not detected when the current density was increased to as high a value as 1.5 amp per sq in. Finally we wish to point out that our experimental data cannot be explained solely in terms of a heat effect. For example in Fig. 1 of Ref. 2, the change in slope of Stage II as a function of the rate of re-

The first record of coal anywhere in the Appalachian regions of which we now know is along the north fork of the Potomac River, above the mouth of Savage River, on a map entitled, A Plan of the upper Part of Potomack River call Cohongorooto Survey'd in the Year 1736. Benj. Winslow1 two "Cole-mines" are shown, one just above Green Island and the other just below Hopwood Run. Winslow was in charge of a surveying party to "Lay out the Bounds of the Northern Neck of Virginia," or Lord Fairfax's Grant, his party locating the liver above the mouth of the Shenandoah, while another party located it below that point, and then around Chesapeake Bay and up the Rappahannock River. The results of the two surveys were combined in a map called, The Courses of the Rivers Rappahannock and Potowmack, in Virginia, as surveyed according to Order in the Years 1736 & 1737, made by Wm. Mayo, which does not show the "cole-mines;" this map was used with the report of the boundary commission which was sent to London in the case before the Privy Council. The boundary line decided upon was surveyed on the ground in 1746, just ten years after the original one. The results of this work were shown on A Map of the Northern Neck in Virginia, According to an Actual Survey begun in the Year MDCCXXXVI, and ended in the Year MDCCXLVI, Drawn by Peter Jefferson And Robert Brooke, Surveyors, which is now in the Colonial Office in London. This map shows the "cole-mines" in the same location as on Winslow's map, and taken from his record, of course, as that part of the survey was not retraced. Faulkner, who examined all of these records in his review of the case in 1832, refers to the notes of the original survey as "No. 10. The original field notes of the survey of the Potomac River, and the mouth of the Shenandoah to the head spring of said Poto¬mac River, by Mr. Benjamin Winslow." While the notes of the 1746 survey are in the London records and photographic copies of them are in several libraries in this county, the notes of the 1736 survey cannot be found anywhere. (For Chas.
