ORDERING'S effect on the creep strength and other plastic properties of metals is unknown at the present time. Sachs and Weerts' attempted to compare the mechanical properties of the ordered and disordered state by comparing a quenched specimen with one annealed for a long time at a low temperature. This experiment is unsatisfactory because it introduces a possible effect from quenching. Barrett' used a hot impact test, but his method was not sufficiently sensitive to indicate any discontinuity in plastic behavior in the neighborhood of the critical temperature. On the theoretical side, Fisher9 as suggested that short range order would strengthen an alloy, but he gives no conclusions as to the effect of long range order. Cottrell" has discussed the interaction between long range order and dislocations, but does not indicate whether slip in a completely ordered alloy without domain boundaries is appreciably more difficult than slip in the disordered state. Because order exists in so many alloy systems, it is most important to prove experimentally whether long range order weakens or strengthens a metal. SINCE the exposition of the behavior of certain iron alloys by Sykes1 involving the existence of an austenite loop and the discovery of such a loop in the chrome iron system by Bain,2 there has been much conjecture both on his part and on the part of metallurgists in general as to the exact shape and location of this loop. In previous work commercial steel has been used and the microscope has been employed to locate the critical points so that the position of the loop has been quite approximate. Numerous attempts have been made to measure the critical points of the carbon-free alloys but all of these for one reason or another have failed. A satisfactory method for studying these phenomena, is presented here. MATERIAL The first difficulty in this study was to obtain pure chromium-iron alloys. This has been overcome by melting in a vacuum electrolytic iron and chromium analyzing 99.84 Cr, Fe and C. A pure magnesite crucible was used and the melt allowed to solidify in the crucible. A typical analysis is chromium, 10.10 per cent., carbon, 0.006 per cent., silicon and manganese nil. To overcome the problem presented by segregation, ingots were made into wire 0.04 in. in diameter. This was accomplished by hand-forging the ingots into rods, using an oxyhydrogen flame for heating, in order to avoid carbon. Subsequently the rods were swaged too wire, the heating being carried out in hydrogen. Thus local segregation was eliminated although differences in analysis between portions 50 ft. apart were noted. An electric-resistance method was first tried to determine the critical points, but due to the physical defects in the wire this failed. Bain had previously shown the presence or absence of critical points in a qualitative way by observing the sag in a catenary. The author has devised the following method which gives an accurate determination of the critical points from expansion-temperature curves of suspended wire, a special telescopic dilatometer being used for the purpose.

UNLESS present in considerable proportion, metals of the precious-metal group-other than gold and silver-are not readily detected by the methods of fire assaying usually applied to ores and metallurgical products. Platinum, when present in small quantity, will ordinarily be reported as silver unless special methods of parting are used. Other elements occurring in the gold itself are all fluxed and slagged in the assay operation and if analyses are made on bullions the melting and slagging operations to which the bullion has been subjected may eliminate most of the associated elements. On the other hand, the analysis of precipi-tate from the cyanide treatment of gold ores may reveal the presence of many unexpected elements, such as tungsten and molybdenum. It is uncertain, however, whether many of the elements present in the pre-cipitate are derived from the ore gangue or from the gold itself. No very general survey of the distribution of metallic elements in gold seems to have been made. Rose and Newman,1 in connection with the composition of native gold, say in part as follows: Gold is occasionally found alloyed with copper and sometimes also with iron, bis-muth, lead, mercury, tin, antimony, palladium or rhodium. Rhodium gold from Mexico was found to be of the specific gravity 15.5 to 16.8 and contained 34 to 43 per cent of rhodium. The native alloy of palladium, gold, and silver from Porpez con-tains 85.98 per cent of gold, 9.85 per cent palladium and 4.17 per cent silver. Mal-donite, from Victoria, contains gold 64.5 per cent, bismuth 35.5 per cent (Louis). Dana' says that native gold is usually alloyed with silver in varying amounts, and that sometimes it also contains traces of copper and iron. Rare varieties contain palladium, rhodium and bismuth. Other authors, for instance Zeigler3 and Clark,4 give similar information. Most refer-ences on the subject agree that ordinary native golds contain, in common, the elements silver, copper and iron. After completion of the work of which this paper is a record, the conclusion is reached that all ordinary native gold probably does contain these elements and, although in certain cases other elements may be found to be present, that it is difficult to

In reviewing petroleum development in Venezuela during the year 1936, it is well to bear in mind certain factors that affected progress, although not directly connected with the oil industry itself. At the start of the year, when the present Federal Administration took over the reins of government, reaction against the former regime resulted in some popular uprisings. Although these were entirely political in character, they were not without their effect on the oil industry itself. Such popular agitation really ended with a short general strike in Caracas, Maracaibo and other cities during June, these strikes being based on demands for certain changes in government policies. The strikes were duly investigated and their motives taken into consideration by the executive power or by Congress, and during the year many of the civil, political and administrative laws have been revised. In June and December, however, it was necessary to suspend activities in drilling and production work, particularly in the Lake Maracaibo Basin area. In June a strike caused a five-day shutdown in the main producing fields and on Dec. 14 labor difficulties resulted in a shutdown that continued to the end of the year, which necessitated suspension of all drilling and production in the Lake Basin area and curtailment of shipments to deep-water terminals. Actually, the strike lasted for a period of 42 days, until Federal intervention brought the dispute to a close with minor wage increases to workers hut with no loss of initiative or independence on the part of the oil companies. Operations in eastern Venezuela were not affected by the labor disturbances, production and exports having been reduced in December only in the Lake Basin fields. Well Completions On Jan. 1, 1937, a total of 3384 wells had been completed throughout Venezuelan fields, as compared with 3094 on Jan. 1,1936. Of these wells, 2005 were producers. The 290 completions effected during 1936 were by the following operating companies: Lago Petroleum Corporation, 123 completions; Dutch Shell group, 104; Standard Oil Company of Venezuela, 46; Mene Grande Oil Co., 15; British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., 2.

The present Paper extends the previous work on cold reduced, low carbon steels to preferred orientations developed after various heat treatments. In recrystal-lized rimmed steel, cube-on-comer orientations increased with cold reductions up to 80 pct. Above that {111}<112> and a partial fiber texture with (1,6,11) in the rolling direction dominated. During grain growth, cube-on-corner orientations have been observed to grow at the expense of {210}<00l>. In re-crystallized Si-Fe (111) (112) and cube-on-edge type orientations are dominant near the surface and the (1,6,11) texture near the midplane for reductions up to 60 pct. With larger reductions {111)}<112> and the (1,6,11) texture are dominant. In cross rolled capped steel a relationship of 30 deg rotation was observed between the (100)[011] of the rolling texture and the main orientations after re crystallization. Most orientations present in recrystallized specimens can be related to components of the rolling texture by one of the following rotations: a) 25 to 35 deg about a (110) b) 55 deg about a (110) C) 30 deg about a (Ill) THE orientation texture of recrystallized steel is of interest where the product is to be deep drawn, because preferred orientation is related to anisotropy of mechanical properties such as the plastic strain ratio (r value);1,2 and in electrical steel applications where a high concentration of [loo] directions in the plane of the sheet improves the magnetic properties of the material. It is interesting to note that both these aims are to a large extent achieved commercially, even though the orientation texture of cold rolled steel does not show large variation3 and the recrystallized orientations are generally given as being related to the as rolled orientations mostly by 25 to 35 deg rotations about common (110) directions.4-6 There is, as yet, no single completely accepted theory on recrystallization. The three mechanisms that have been investigated and discussed are: a) Oriented growth b) Oriented nucleation c) Oriented nucleation, selective growth Largely from the observations of the recrystalliza-tion process by means of the electron microscope,7-11 there is now considerable evidence that the "nucleus" of the recrystallized grain is produced by the coalescence of a few subgrains to form a larger composite subgrain, which finally grows by high angle boundary migration into the deformed matrix. From the intensive work on the recrystallization of rolled single crystals of iron, Fe-A1 and Fe-Si al-loys4-" he following observations have been made: 1) The change in orientation during primary recrys-tallization can usually be described as a rotation of 25 to 36 deg about one of the (110) directions. 2) The (110) axes of rotation often coincide with poles of active (110) slip planes. 3) If several orientations are present in the cold rolled structure, the (110) axis of rotation will preferably be a (110) direction that is common to two or more of the orientations. 4) With larger amounts of cold reduction (70 pct or more) departure from these observations became more frequent. 5) After larger cold reductions, rotations on re-crystallization about (111) and (100) directions have been observed. K. Detert12 infers that a rotation relationship of 55 deg about (110) directions is also possible, by stating that the recrystallized orientation {111}<112> can form from the orientation {100}<011> of cold reduced partial fiber texture A.3 The observation by Michalak and schoone13 that (lll)[l10] formed during recrys-tallization in fully killed steel containing (111)[112],— as well as (001)[ 110] which is related to the {111}<011> by a 55 deg rotation about <110>-implies a possible 30 deg rotation relationship about the common [Ill]. Heyer, McCabe, and Elias14 have recrystallized rimmed steel after various amounts of cold reduction, by a rapid and by a slow heating cycle and found that the preferred orientations strengthened with increased cold reduction. The most pronounced orientation up to about 70 pct cold reduction was found to be {1 11}< 110>, after 80 pct cold reduction both {111}<110> and {111}<112>, after 85 and 90 pct cold reduction, {111}<112>, and after 97.5 pct cold reduction it was {111}<112> and (100)(012). In the present work, the orientation textures of the recrystallized specimens are examined under various conditions of steel composition, amount and method of cold reduction, and method of recrystallization. The relationships between the preferred orientations of the as rolled and recrystallized specimens, and the conditions for the formation of the various orientations during recrystallization are investigated.

INTRODUCTION Within the past few years Clark (1972), King (1970), and King, et al. (1973), have summarized porphyry molybdenum occurrences. Clark (1972) includes as porphyry or stockwork deposits some occurrences more recent exploration has shown to be of other genetic types. King (1970) and King, et al. ( 1973) provide broad general descriptions that unfortunately are restricted to the US. Nor does the King, et al. (1973) description have benefit of the Wallace (1974), Hall, et al. (1974), or Giles (1975) data on alteration, fluid inclusions, or isotope chemistry. The synthesis presented here up- dates these older summaries, eliminating all but the well established porphyry molybdenum deposits as well as enumerating the unifying characteristics displayed by these deposits within the Cordillera of North America. This type of deposit occurs in the South American Andes as well, but Andean deposits are not well documented so only North American Cordilleran deposits are considered. Stockwork, porphyry, and Climax type molybdenum deposits are synonymous geo- logical labels for the large molybdenite de- posits found in parts of the western Cordillera of North America (Khruschov, 1959). These labels describe and define the type of deposit discussed herein. The term porphyry is preferred for this chapter because it describes the common characteristics; it separates the molybdenum deposits from the porphyry copper deposits, which have many similarities but also important differences. This usage also eliminates blanket application of the word stockwork to breccia pipe deposits such as Boss Mountain in British Columbia. J. R. Woodcock has contributed much to this chapter; his influence, original data, and thoughtful comments qualify him as co-author. Porphyry molybdenum deposits are characterized by fine-grained molybdenite occurring alone or with quartz and/or pyrite in fractures and open spaces of stockworks and breccias. The molybdenite is generally less than one millimeter across and in many cases too fine-grained to be seen with the aid of a hand lens. Occasionally some deposits con-

It is also assr~med that sulphar, copper, and other ingredients, not determined, are qually present in all the rails, or at least {lo not affect the wear, since I is taken as constant. Dr. Dudley tacitly assumes the coefficient6 C, P, S, and M to be positive; and assigns certain valries to them, by means of which he redom t.he equation to the form I + Pa: = R, x being equal to cc + Es +Mm i Pp, or tjje uanjbe,. of so-called phosphorus units in the rail. But we do not have R directly given under constant circumstances. The varying weights (per engine, car, or train) and the varying epds, we must neglect for lack of data, and assume that in these rwpects the rails examined have been treated srlbstantially alike. But there remain the varying conditions as to track, which mnst he elirninsted. Dr. Dudley gives six clrlsses, four of which contain 8 rails each, and two 16 rails each. Beginning with the 6~st (tangent grade), take the mean of the figures expressing wear for that clam; and continaing tliis process through the other five, we obtain six expressions in quantity of loss &apos;by wear, which we assome tc, represent, in their differences, the varying conditions of the trarli, with respect to grade and direction. Production in Colombia attained a new high during 1940 when it reached a total of 25,607,976 bbl. Of this amount, the Tropical Oil Co. produced 21;426,492 bbl., including 268,586 bbl. of petroleum condensate, and the Cololmbian Petroleum Co. produced 4,181,484 bbl. from its Barco property. The wildcatting program of different companies in the Magdalena Valley that was initiated during the previous year was continued but with results that were decidedly disappointing. Ten wells were drilled in the Magdalena Valley between the approximate latitudes of Puerto Wilches and Puerto Berrio and nine of these were dry; the tenth was a small producer of no commercial importance. The prospects of finding new fields in the Magdalena Valley thus received a serious setback, since some of the tests drilled were on well developed surface structures. The prospects of the Valley, however, have by no means been exhausted and drilling operations are being continued on other prospects. One additional wildcat was drilled outside the Magdalena Valley on the Colombian Petroleum Company&apos;s Barco Concession, which brought to 11 the total number of wildcats drilled in Colom-bia during the year. INTRODUCED in 1946 to serve a need in power- plant operation, closed-circuit TV has been used by well over 200 organizations in approximately 25 different industries. Known as industrial television, or simply ITV, it can be described as a private system wherein the television signal is restricted in distribution, usually by confinement within co-axial cable that directly connects the TV camera to one or several monitors, Figs. 1, 2. The picture is continuous and transmission is instantaneous, permit- ting an observer to see an operation that may be too distant, too inaccessible, or too dangerous to be viewed directly. Destructive testing or the machining of high explosives can now be conducted hundreds of feet away by personnel who still have close control through the eyes of the TV camera. It is also possible for one man to control operations formerly requiring the co-ordinated efforts of several workers. For example, at a large midwestern cement plant conveyance of limestone from primary crusher to raw mill and loading into five storage bins once necessitated the work of two men, one having little to do but prevent spilling of material by manually moving the tripper on the belt conveyor as occasion required. TV cameras mounted on the tripper now provide bin level indication to the conveyor operator at the crusher position so he is able to control the entire loading operation remotely, Fig. 3. By means of a switch, the picture from either camera is alternately available on a single viewer, or monitor, Fig. 4. Each camera is mounted on the tripper by means of a simple adjustable support and looks down into the bin, which is identified by the number of cross members on the vertical rod. Each associated power unit is located on a platform above the camera, Fig. 5. This centralized control by means of TV often has produced superior results, and in many instancés saving in operating costs has been sufficient to write off equipment costs within six months to a year.

Zinc is one of the effective elements introduced to enhance the strength of aluminum. This strengthening is principally attributable to the high solid solubility of zinc in aluminum and the pronounced variation of solubility with temperature. Consequently an accurate determination of the solid solubility curve is desirable. The solid solubility relations have been studied by numerous investigators. Shepherd1 first established the existence of a solid solution region at the aluminum end of the diagram (-v phase) by specific volume and microscopic determinations. Bauer and Voge12 published a constitutional diagram which showed the limits of solid solubility as determined by thermal and microscopic methods. Hanson and Gayler3 presented the aluminum-zinc diagram which is now most generally accepted (Fig. 1). Chill-cast samples were given thermal treatments designed to obtain equilibrium conditions, quenched, and microscopically examined. The solubility was placed between 15 to 20 per cent at 60" C., 20 to 22 per cent at 140" C. and 36 to 38 per cent at 270" C. Sander and Meissner decidedly modified the limits of the -y phase field of Hanson and Gayler&apos;s diagram by using similar methods on chill-cast specimens annealed for a shorter period of time. Tanabe,s utilizing dynamic hard-ness, electrical conductivity and dilatometric measurements of specimens at temperature, obtained values comparable to Hanson and Gayler&apos;s at room temperature, but appreciably lower at higher temperatures. Nishimura6 concluded from age-hardening results of aluminum-zinc alloy chill castings, which had been quenched from 400" to 500" C., that the solubility of zinc in aluminum at room temperature is less than 5 * Metallurgical Division, Aluminum Research Laboratories. 1 E. It has been generally recognized that, owing to the extreme friability of galena, fine grinding has a tendency to cause excessive sliming of the mineral, so operators of lead mills have attempted to avoid this condition by commencing concentration at as coarse sizes as any mineral is freed. Jigging has been the basis of the milling process, making a clean coarse concentrate and a large amount of tailing, which was considered sufficiently low-grade to be rejected. However, developments and improvements in concentration processes are everywhere changing the low-grade tailing of yesterday into material worth re-treating today. Investigations of the work of the Hancock jig on the Bonne Terre ore have shown that the best results to be expected will give a tailing assaying 0.75 per cent. lead; the average for all conditions and grades of ore will be between 0.80 and 0.90 per cent. By crushing the jig tailings in ball-mills and retreating by tables and flotation, a tailing of considerably lower grade can be made; the problem then becomes an economic one of increased crushing costs versus higher recovery. In considering the entire elimination of jigging, the increascd smelting charges due to a greater amount of slime galena will be counterbalanced by the lower operating cost, increased recovery, and the many advantages of a simpler flow sheet. In developing these problems in the Bonne Terre mill of the St. Joseph Lead Co., a long series of tests has been carried out covering every stage of crushing and concentration, and a large number of possible flow sheets were considered and tried. Only the final results and a few comparisons will be given here. At the same time, a careful and detailed cost-keeping system has enabled us to compare milling costs with the various Bow sheets, and to calculate the economics of the problem with great accuracy. Concentration Problem The ore occurs as widely scattered deposits of galena disseminated through limestone; it has a specific gravity of 2.8 and the following composition: Pb, 4.00 per cent.; Fe, 3.00 per cent.; Zn, 0.32 per cent.; S, 3.10 per cent.; MnO2, 0.73 per cent.; SiO2, 4.20 per cent.; Al2O3, 3.20 per cent ; CaO, 28.60 per cent.; MgO, 16.85 per cent.; CO2, 36.00 per

The mines of the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co. are situated in the Warren Mining District, Cochise County, Arizona, between Bisbee and Warren and adjoin those of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. and the Shattuck Arizona Copper Co. Paleozoic 1imestones.of considerable thickness have been intruded by granite porphyry. A great stock of the intrusive outcrops boldly near the city of Bisbee and is known as Sacramento Hill. From this central core the porphyry has tongued out into the limestone for many thousands of feet as dikes and sills of irregular shape and variable dimensions. Churn drilling has recently developed a large tonnage of secondarily enriched copper ore in the main porphyry mass of Sacramento Hill. While some ore has been found in porphyry in other parts of the district, it is relatively unimportant compared with that which occurs in the Paleozoic limestone as irregular lenses replacing favorable beds near porphyry contacts or associated with well-marked fracture zones often many hundreds of feet away from the intrusive. In a zone extending from Sacramento Hill for a distance of from 1,500 to 3,000 ft., the limestone has been extensively metamorphosed and in this contact metamorphic zone the ore occurs through a known vertical thickness of upward of 900 ft. and individual orebodies often show extension in a vertical direction of over 200 ft. At a greater distance from the intrusive stock, the ore occurs as lenses of greater horizontal than vertical dimensions with an average thickness of approximately 30 ft. An exception to this rule is found in the occasional steeply dipping mineralized fractures, almost true tabular veins, which are found long distances a way from the zone of contact metamorphism. The copper was probably introduced during or slightly later than the porphyry intrusion in the form of chalcopyrite and bornite. These primary copper minerals are always associated with pyrite and often occur as rich lenses in a huge mass or shell of pyrite carrying an insignificant percentage of copper. In many instances the copper-bearing solutions were preceded by siliceous solutions and these latter, often persisting during the period of mineralization, have thoroughly indurated the ore-

Tungsten wires were examined by transmission electron microscopy after drawing and after high-temperature annealing. Drawn wire consists of highly elongated grains called fibers, whose long axis is parallel to [110]. Each fiber is ribbon-shaped, with the wide dimension of the ribbon parallel to (001) and the narrow dimension parallel to (110). Furthermore, most fibers are bent about [I10] and twisted along their length. The fibers are divided into cells, which in some cases contain a platelet substructure lying on (110) planes. The misorien-tations of these platelets accumulate to allow the macroscopic twist of the fibers. During annealing, several competing reactions occur, starting at different temperatures and progressing at different rates. Among these processes are fiber-boz~ndary migration, polygonization, dislocation rearrangement, and possibly impurity segregation. The fiber-boundary migration accompanied by the formation of transverse boundaries during polygonization leads to an equiaxed grain structure although recrystal-lization does not occur. There is a relationship between the flow stress of the wires and their average subgrain width in the form sy = s0 + kyd-1/2 . Also, there appears to be a relatio&apos;nship between wire ductility and the formation of transverse boundaries during annealing at about 800°C. THERE have been many investigations of the structures and properties of tungsten wires1-4 due to their commercial importance for use as lamp filaments. The structural studies have so far been limited to optical microscope and replica electron-microscope studies. due to the difficulty of .-me- paring from wires thin foils which can be examined by transmission electron microscopy. However, this difficulty has been recently overcome,5 and it is now possible to examine tungsten wires by transmission electron microscopy as well as by other techniques. In this paper, the structure of drawn tungsten wire is described, as are the changes in the structure during high-temperature annealing. Some discussion of the relationship between structures and properties is also given. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES Commercial 0.030-in.-diam doped tungsten wires drawn at progressively decreasing temperatures between about 1400° and about 800°C were examined. The composition, mechanical properties, and optical microstructures are described in detail elsewhere.&apos; All experimental materials were vacuum-annealed for 10 ot 30 min at temperatures at 100°C intervals between 700° and 2000°C. Specimens were thinned for examination in the Siemens Elmiskop I electron microscope by the method of Meieran and Thomas.5 STRUCTURE OF AS-DRAWN WIRE The optical microstructure of as-drawn tungsten wire has been described by Peck and Thomas.7 They observed that wire in longitudinal section consists of highly elongated grains called fibers whose width varies between 1 and 10 µ, while in transverse section the fibers appear to be elliptical in cross section and bent about their common [110] wire axis. They explained this unusual appearance as being due to the drawing of a bcc material with a [110] texture, and predicted that the wide and narrow planes of the fiber cross section would be parallel to (001) and (110), respectively. The fibers apparently bend about the [110] axis during drawing to maintain grain boundary continuity during drawing. Transmission electron microscopy offers a way of checking these predictions as well as providing a more detailed picture of the wire structure. Figs. 1, 2, and 3 are typical electron micrographs of

Pvfoperties of rubidium and cesium are compared with those of other alkali metals. Methods for the preparation of rubidium and cesium metal are reviewed briefly, ad hazards and safety precautions required in handling rubidium and cesium metal are described. SimPle methods for handling laboratory quantities of elemental rubidium ad cesium under oil and under argon are illustrated. CESIUM and rubidium were both discovered by Bunsen and Kirchoff in the years 1860 and 1861. Cesium was discovered while Bunsen and Kirchoff were making a spectrographic study of spring water from Durkheim, Germany. It was the first element discovered by this technique. The element was given the Latin name "caesius" for sky blue because of the color it imparted to flames. Elemental cesium was first prepared by Setterberg in 1881 through electrolysis of a molten mixture of cesium and barium cyanides.&apos; In 1861, Bunsen and Mirchoff discovered rubidium while making a spectrographic study of the alkali content of lepidolite ore from Saxony. Two prominent dark red lines appeared in the spectrum and so the element was named "rubidius" or dark red. In 1861 Bunsen and Kirchoff first prepared elemental rubidium through the electrolysis of molten rubidium chl~ride.~ The alkali metals are very similar in their chemical and physical properties. They are the most active metals, and all exhibit a single oxidation state of one. They are so reactive that they are never found in nature in the elemental state. The reactivity of he metals increases with atomic number. Rubidiurn and cesium ignite spontaneously in air and react explosively with water. This extreme reactivity makes necessary special equipment and techniques for the safe preparation and use of the metals. The cation: of Group IA can be separated from the metallic cations of other groups with relative ease, but the separation of the individual alkali cations is much more difficult because of their close chemical similarity. This close chemical and physical similarity of alkali metals can be inferred from the atomic radii, oxidation numbers, and ioni-zation potentials shown in Table I. A difficult but the most practical physical method of separating the elemental alkali metals from one another is by distillation. Only lithium has a boiling point sufficiently far-removed from the boiling points of the other alkali metals to make this method of separation feasible without elaborate and expensive equipment. This method is not used, however, for lithium because it possesses sufficient chemical dissimilarity from the other alkalies for it to be separated relatively easily as lithium hydroxide monohydrate or as lithium carbonate. The investment analysis methods that are most generally accepted in the mineral industries in the mid-80&apos;s are presented along with their advantages and disadvantages. Also covered are current widely-used practices for introducing the uncertain nature of most of the important variables in an investment analysis, which is contrasted to the former dominance of deterministic analysis. Finally, the discussion turns to current practice for handling the two critical areas: cost of capital and inflation. The advice contained is reinforced with data from a survey of current practices in the petroleum industry.

Occasionally in the application of the austenitic chromium-nickel steels to corrosive conditions, failures have occurred by cracking without serious general over-all attack of the metal. As pointed out by Foyt and Scheil(1),2 and by Scheil, et al.(2) as well as by Hodge and Miller(3), the stress-corrosion failures that have occurred have been limited in number, and have taken place only when the steels were exposed to certain corrodents. These investigators have stated that while stress- corrosion cracking can be intergranular in nature and originate at the grain boundaries of the austenitic chromium-nickel steels, it can also take place in trans- granular fashion. They have shown that the cracking may be either initiated at the grain boundaries and may propagate along grain boundaries for some distance and then suddenly extend across grains, or it may begin in a transgranular fashion and suddenly proceed along grain boundaries until the cracking stops. Their data further show that when austenitic stainless steel is subject to intergranular attack, stress will concentrate and cause cracking in service. These investigators have studied the effect of the metals titanium and columbium which are added to the steels to impart immunity to intergranular attack, and molybdenum which is added to improve resistance to general corrosion.

The stored energy of cold work was investigated in drawn gold-silver wires by tin-solution calorimetry as a function of strain, strain rate, initial grain size, and temperature of defornation. The energy expended in the deformation process was measured. Hardness was also measured and was correlated with the stored energy as a function of strain and strain rate. Mechanisms of energy storage are discussed. THE variables which determine the amount of energy stored in a metal during cold work are of two kinds: those involving the metal and its condition and those involving the process of deformation. For example, the stored energy differs between one metal and another and between different degrees of purity of a single metal. It also depends on the nature of the deformation process and particularly the extent, rate, and temperature of deformation. Most investigators have reported the stored energy as a function of strain (or some similar geometric parameter) or of the energy expended during deformation. In general the stored energy increases with strain, rapidly at first, but more slowly at large strains until a saturation level is reached. Information about the effects of other variables, however, is limited. Some data are available on the dependence of the stored energy on the purity of a metal1 and on the composition of

As this paper is written, the only method for the commercial production of lithium metal is by the fusion electrolysis of LiCl-KCl mixtures, as first proposed by Guntz.2 The details of the industrial process have not been made public but Osborg8 stated that an efficiency of more than go pct is obtained with a lithium metal recovery above 95 pct and that the metal is 99.5 pct pure. Pletenev9 gave a power consumption of 66 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium metal produced with a salt consumption of 9 kg of LiCl and 0.4 kg of KCI. Pletenev&apos;s figures indicate a somewhat lower recovery than that given by Osborg. In a recent report on German lithium plants, Motock7 gives figures that are also less favorable than those reported by Osborg. At the German plants the lithium recovery in electrolysis was only 83.4 pct, with a power consumption of too kw-hr per kilogram of lithium. The metal averaged only 97 pct pure, with sodium and potassium as the chief impurities. The presence of SO2, SO3, Si02, Ba, Ca, and appreciable amounts of Na and Fe2O3 were especially disturbing in the electrolysis, and it was necessary to run the cell for some time to eliminate most of these impurities and condition the bath. It may be noted here that most of these impurities do not interfere with a thermal reduction process. These facts show that the present method of producing lithium is fairly efficient and would suggest that other methods could not compete. However, fusion electrolysis has certain drawbacks, such as the necessity of supplying costly, low-voltage direct current and of collecting and processing the anodic chlorine if it is not to be wasted. An even greater disadvantage is that lithium chloride must be used for an electrolyte. It is one of the most expensive salts of lithium, since it cannot be produced in anhydrous form by precipitation from aqueous solution, as is done with LiF or Li2CO3. The reduction of lithium by a vacuum process similar to the ferrosilicon method for the production of magnesium would have certain advantages. Small units, such as Pidgeon retorts, would give flexibility of production to meet demand, and a small plant would require moderate capital outlay. There is a possibility of using idle Government-owned magnesium plants for such purposes. The raw materials needed for vacuum thermal reduction would not have to be extremely pure, especially with respect to the iron and calcium content.
