FROM the time of its establishment in 1933, the Tennessee Valley Authority has been active in the field of phosphates. Under the T.V.A. Act it has a broad Congressional mandate to guide a unified development of the resources of the region for the long-range benefit of the people. As one phase of this function, it is directed to co-operate with farmers in the experimental large-scale use of improved fertilizers and development of better fertilizer practices. Following careful study, it was concluded that the objectives of this phase could best be attained by soil rebuilding through the use of phosphatic fertilizer and lime in an improved farm management sys- tem. This activity was launched through a program of test and demonstration on farms and simultaneous technical investigations to develop new and improved phosphatic fertilizers. Phosphorus has since become a keystone of the Authority's resource development and conservation program. Human effort is being conserved by phosphate utilization on the farm, and mineral conservation has been promoted by technical developments in phosphate mining and manufacturing operations.

Laboratory and pilot plant work on tabling of 14-mesh X 0 hydrocyclone under flow are summarized. Included are: operating principles of hydrocyclones and tables; performance of these two devices, separately as well as in combination; comparison of the combination hydrocyclone-table system with other fine-coal processing systems; and application of the hydrocyclone-table system in fine-coal circuits. The data show that the table actually compensates for the shortcomings of hydrocyclone and makes a combination table-hydrocyclone system attractive, particularly in those cases where fine pyrite is one of the major contaminants.

HAVING been asked to talk about recent devel-opments in mining equipment, I chose the sub-ject of small units of storage-battery locomo-tives which recently have been developed with the idea of motorizing transportation in the mines as far as possible, replacing the manual labor of hand-tramming. Metal mines are probably less advanced in this field than coal mines, where transportation of large ton-nages on any one level is quite common. Of course, metal mines, where large tonnages are handled on any one level, are as advanced as coal mines, and storage-battery locomotives for main haulages are used quite commonly in such metal mines, but the mines having levels at many intervals in the depth of the orebody, or a number of intermediate levels in which a consider-able amount of hand-tramming has to be done, and small metal mines in which the size of the orebody does not seem to warrant the initial capital expenditure for the driving of main haulage levels and installation of rock and ore chutes and raises for the delivery of the broken ore and rock to the cars have been at consider-able disadvantage in replacing manual labor by some mechanical means of transportation. Several years ago the field was canvassed among the manufacturers of electric-locomotive equipment and the conclusion was reached that the art had not been devel-oped to the advantage of metal miners who desire to replace small units of labor by locomotive equipment. The need for such small locomotives is all the more em-phasized by the development in the past few years of mechanical mucking-machines (loading equipment for filling the cars from muck piles on the level). Any me-chanical loader is a liability instead of an asset unless means are also provided for keeping the material away from the loading-machines. Therefore the transporta-tion system must be equal to the capacity of a loading-machine, otherwise the latter is idle such a large per-centage of its time as to prove an unprofitable invest-ment. So there is a need for portable, small haulage units to handle small mine cars in many metal mines, and, naturally, units are desired which can be so readily shifted from level to level as to facilitate their free use. Of course, in mines in which each level comes to the shaft it is not such a difficult problem, but many mines have a great many intermediate levels which must be approached through raises, timber slides or other small openings required to transfer ore and to get timber and other supplies to those levels.

The silver phase of silver and finely divided alumina composites is shown to grow as single crystabs upon solidification from the melt. These crystals grow without the aid of an externally applied thermal gradient or a mold. The single-crystal growth is more readily disrupted as the alumina content varies from the optimum concentration of 20 wt pct. Pretreatment such as variation of fabrication pressure, and presintering of the specimens appear to play a lesser role in this phenomenon. In actual practice the growth of single crystals of metals from the melt is a tedious, painstaking process.' Care must be taken to insure the proper thermal gradients and rate of growth in a vibration-free environment. Excellent single crystals can be grown when these variables are controlled. When a second insoluble and finely divided phase is present in the melt the growth of single crystals is difficult, if not impossible, even under the most favorable conditions outlined above. During the past few years, a composite of silver and alumina has demonstrated an ability to resist flow even though the major phase, silver, is mo1ten. 2 A more surprising feature of this material is the ease with which single crystals of silver grow upon cooling the composite from temperatures above the melting point of silver to temperatures near room temperature. Observations have been made that demonstrate that single crystals of silver will grow even when conditions most unfavorable for growth of pure silver crystals exist. The crystals grown in this manner are imperfect in that a great deal of subgrain structure exists. It is the purpose of this manuscript to qualitatively describe this process and to attempt to isolate the influencing factors of this behavior. MATERIAL PREPARATION The composite material is prepared by powder-metallurgical techniques. Two items of great importance are the introduction of oxygen into the system and the obvious need for a thorough mixing of the metallic and refractory oxide phases. The oxygen is necessary in order that the silver wets the alumina. Without oxygen the phases separate and the material shows no unusual properties. In order to supply the needed oxygen the silver is added in the form of silver oxide which is readily decomposed to oxygen and silver upon heating. The silver oxide is readily obtained in a finely divided form that allows a uniform mixture of the alumina and silver oxide to be prepared. The correct ratio of alumina to silver oxide is mixed in the presence of alcohol in an ordinary food blender. The mixture has the consistency of a thin slurry and after mixing for approximately 20 min is dried and pressed into billets at various pressures. As is shown in Fig. 1, there is no limit to the shape of the specimens obtainable as single crystals. These billets are heated in air in a predeter-

INCREASING acceptance of perlite products, chiefly in the fields of lightweight structural aggregates and thermal and acoustic insulation, has led to expanding market demands that have encouraged many new producers to enter the field. In some instances, however, the failure of these producers to anticipate the variable response of perlite to conventional processing methods has led to difficulty in establishing an economical flowsheet by which a predictable specification product could be obtained. It is not the writer's intent to provide a solution to these problems, but rather to summarize their nature. It is to be hoped that members of the industry who have hurdled some of these obstacles will document solutions arising from their experience. In this treatment the term perlite will not be restricted to the petrographic definition but will apply to all volcanic glasses. Expansible obsidians and pitchstones are accordingly included in this broader industrial classification. Chemical Properties: Although perlite has been reported to range in composition from that of rhyolite to that of andesite, it is probable that most of the glasses have the composition of rhyolite. When recalculated to an anhydrous basis, the five analyzed glasses from New Mexico, representing five distinct physical types from widely separated deposits, show an amazingly uniform oxide composition. Water content is the only major compositional variable; total water ranges from a low of 0.37 pct (non-expansible obsidian) to a high of 8.95 pct (expansible pitchstone). The wide range in expansion characteristics exhibited by these samples cannot be related to significant variations in the composition of the nonvolatile fraction and has been only partially correlated with variations in water content.

THE manganese ore deposits of the Gold Coast, British West Africa, occur in very ancient rocks, of both sedimentary and metamorphic types. In. certain respects, they strongly resemble those of India and Brazil, as contrasted with those of Tertiary age in Georgia. Viewed from the present condition of the maganiferous rocks, the oldest deposits are in the sediments. Later than these are the progressively metamorphosed representatives of these sediments; youngest are the products of decay and degradation with the concentration of manganese oxide of both areas. The oldest occurrences are in argillaceous and siliceous phyllites and slates, which show only a moderate amount of metamorphism. They belong to a series which also includes mudstones, sandstones, grits, conglomerates and subordinate limestones, with tuffs and lava-flow's largely of basic types. To this series I have given the name Birrim. Its age is unknown, for no definite fossils have been discovered in it. As the characteristics of these non-fossiliferous strata at many places are the same as those of strata in many parts of the world that are suitable for the preservation of fossils and that contain them, it is assumed that the Gold Coast deposits are pre-Cambrian. These rocks of the Birrim series have normally a northeast-southwest strike and are folded, but not to any very great degree except in certain belts. From the Eastern Province of the Gold Coast they may be traversed across their strike for more than 600 miles to the extreme northwestern corner of the Northern Territories. Thence they probably extend much further into French Territory.

A froth flotation unit was added to the DeBardeleben Coal Corporation's Empire washer at Empire, Alabama, in the fall Of I94O following an investigation of possible ways and means of recovering coal values from settling-tank overflow or slurry. Officials of the DeBardeleben corporation hoped that some practical and reasonably economical way could be found for recovering fine coal from overflow water, although there had as yet been very little progress along this line in the Alabama coal fields. The Bureau of Mines was asked to cooperate in the project through its Southern Experiment Station, at University, Alabama. This paper presents a brief description of the process and the installation that resulted from the investigation of the overflow water or slurry problem at the Empire mine. The experimental data include' as a Part of this Paper were obtained during the course of the investigation in 1940 Since that time, however, the flotation unit has been running more or less continuously without significant operational changes and is still Performing pretty much in accordance with the data obtained in 1940. Flowsheet at Empire and Type of Coal Treated The Empire mine is developed on the Black Creek bed near the the border of the Warrior field. The coal in this bed is extremely low-ash and although there is an almost complete absence of bone coal and partings, the bed is so thin that, with mechanized mining, a high percentage of rock from roof and floor inevitably gets into the run-of-mine coal. The thickness of the Black Creek bed throughout the part of the Warrior field in which it is mined extensively is rarely over 30 in. and probably would average about 25 in, the coal is of the high-volatile A rank and of excellent quality, but as a result of admixture of roof and floor material, the run-of-mine product usually contains I ; to 20 pct rock by weight. he following is a proximate analysis on an "as-received " basis of a typical seam sample from the Empire mine:' moisture, 3.0 pet; volatile, 34.6 fixed carbon 58.3; ash, 4.1 This sample shelved 15,070 Btu per pound and 0.9 pct sulphur on a moisture-and-ash-free basis. INTRODUCTION The mine is situated in the middle of Norway 150 km north of the town Trondheim. The iron ore deposits were discovered in 1906 and have been continuously mined since. The first owner was A/S Nordiske Grubekompagni. In 1912 Fosdalens Bergverks-Aktieselskab was established; since World War II it has been a wholly state-owned company. The location is advantageous, with mining facilities, ore dressing plant and stockpile situated near the northern head of the Trondheimsf jord. The iron ore always occurs in Ordovician lavas and sediments, now altered to greenschists, keratophyres and limestone. The ore bearing zone is 150 km long. The deposits consist of two parallel linear ore bodies lying one above the other in the same stratigraphic horizon which dips 70' to the south. The upper body is 50-100 m high, the lower one 250 m high, while the distance between the two bodies in the East mine varies between 20 and 60 m. The ore width varies between 5 and 8 m. The ore bodies strike WSW and plunge between 10' and 15" in this direction. To date continuous ore has either been worked or opened up along a total strike length of 10 km. Until 1969 all ore was mined in the western part of the deposit called the Western mine. In the spring of 1969 production started in a new mine, the Eastern mine. The ore bodies in this new mine are geologically the same as in the old mine, but they have been displaced 700 m downwards along a major fault in the Fosdalen valley.

The rates of formation of the different oxides on molybdenum in pure oxygen at 1 atm pressure have been determined in the temperature range 500° to 770°C. The rate of vaporization of MOO, is linear with time, and the energy of activation for its vaporization is 53,000 cal per mol below 650°C and 89,600 cal per mol at temperatures above 650°C. The ratio Mo03(vapor.lzing)/MoOS3(suriace) increases in a complicated manner with time and temperature. There is a maximum in the total rate of oxidation at 6W°C. At temperatures below 600°C, an activation energy of 48,900 cal per mol for the formation of total MOO, on molybdenum has been evaluated. The suboxide Moo2 does not increase beyond a very small critical thickness. At temperatures above 725°C, catastrophic oxidation of an autocatalytic nature was encountered. Pronounced pitting of the metal was found to occur in the temperature range 550° to 650°C. Marker movement experiments indicate that the oxides on molybdenum grow almost entirely by diffusion of oxygen anions. USEFUL life of molybdenum in air at elevated temperatures is limited by the unprotective nature of its oxide which begins to volatilize at moderate temperatures. Although the oxide/metal volume ratio is greater than one, the protective nature of the oxide film is very limited. Gulbransen and Hickman' have shown, by means of electron diffraction studies, that the oxides formed during the oxidation of molybdenum are MOO, and MOO,. The dioxide is the one present next to the metal surface and the trioxide is formed by the oxidation of the dioxide. Molybdenum dioxide is a brownish-black oxide which can be reduced by hydrogen at about 500°C. Molybdenum trioxide has a colorless transparent rhombic crystal structure when sublimed, but on the metal surface it has a yellowish-white fibrous structure. It is reported to be volatile at temperatures above 500" and melts at 795°C. It is soluble in ammonia, which does not affect the dioxide or the metal. In his extensive and classic investigations of the oxidation of metals, Gulbransen2 has studied the formation of thin oxide films on molybdenum in the temperature range 250" to 523°C. These experiments were carried out in a vacuum microbalance, and the effect of pressure (in the range 10-6 yo 76 mm Hg), surface preparation, concentration of inert gas in the lattice, cycling procedures in temperature, and vacuum effect were studied. The oxidation was found to follow the parabolic law from 250" to 450°C and deviations started to occur at 450 °C. The rates of evaporation of a thick oxide film were also studied at temperatures of 474" to 523°C. In vacua of the order of 10- km Hg and at elevated temperatures, an oxidation process was observed, since the oxide that formed at these low pressures consisted of MOO, which has a protective action to further reaction in vacua at temperatures up to 1000°C. Electron diffraction studies showed that, as the film thickened in the low temperature range, MOO8 became predominant on the surface. Above 400°C MOO, was no longer observed, MOO, being the only oxide detected. The failure to detect MOO, on the surface of the film formed at the higher temperatures does not militate against the formation of this oxide, since according to free energy data MOO3, is stable up to much higher temperatures. At the low pressures employed, this oxide would volatilize off as soon as it was formed. Its vapor pressure is relatively high and is given by the equations" log p(mm iig) = -16,140 T-1 -5.53 log T + 30.69 (25°C—melting point) log p(mm He) = -14,560 T-1 -7.04 log T+1 + 34.07 (melting-boiling point). Lustman4 has reported some results on the scaling of molybdenum in air which indicate a discontinuity at the melting point of MOO, (795°C). Above the melting point of MOO,, oxidation is accompanied by loss of weight, since the oxide formed flows off the surface as soon as it is formed.5,6 Qathenau and Meijering7 point out that the eutectic MOO2-MOO3 melts at 778C, and they ascribe the catastrophic oxidation of alloys of high molybdenum content to the formation of low melting point eutectics of MOO3 with the oxides of the melts present. Fontana and Leslie -explain the same phenomenon in terms of the volatility of MOO,, which leads to the formation of a porous scale. Recent unpublished work by Speiser9 n the oxidation of molybdenum in air at temperatures between 480" and 960°C shows that the rate of weight change of molybdenum is controlled by the relationship between the rates of formation and evaporation of MOO,. They have measured the rates of evaporation of Moo3 in air at different temperatures and estimated an activation energy of 46,900 cal. This compares with the value of 50,800 cal per mol obtained by Gulbransen for the rate of sublimation of MOO, into a vacuum.

6.3-1. Historical Development. Rotary drilling has been used in surface mining for many years. Its principal use is for primary blasthole drilling. In this use, holes in the range from 4 to 15 in. in diameter are drilled in overburden and massive ore bodies for large initial blasting operation. With properly designed shot patterns and loading, secondary blasting is seldom required. The use of rotary drilling with diamond bits for exploration is discussed in Chapter 3.1. Small rotary drillholes of approximately 2-in. diameter are employed as blastholes to shatter uncovered coal seams, but this is a minor part of surface mining drilling operations. Another minor use of rotary drills in surface mining is for placing wire saw poles in dimension stone quarries, usually accomplished with large-diameter calyx or steel shot drills. Primary blasthole drilling by the rotary method was performed with drag bits until 1949 (19). Its use in mining was only in soft formations, so that rotary drills prior to that time were found principally in overburden drilling for the surface mining of coal. In 1949 it was found that air circulation to remove cuttings resulted in increased penetration rate and prolonged life for the rolling-cutter type of bits. Prior to that time, and since their introduction in oil well drilling in 1907, water had been used for circulation with these bits. The dependence on water to clean the hole had delayed the acceptance of bits with rolling cutters in mines because of water haulage and freezing problems as well as the loss of water through cracks in the formation. After rolling cutters were introduced, subsequent improvements in tools made rotary drilling adaptable to harder formations (18). This system is now used in the hardest formations encountered in mining. 6.3-2. Principles of Operation. ENERGY. THE burden a man can endure depends on its magnitude and the number of tunes it is applied, as well as on many other factors. The resisting power of steel likewise is dependent on many factors. The maximum load it can support indefinitely is much less than its possible momentary burden. A light load straining the metal far within its elastic limit, if repeated indefinitely, ruptures the metal. The magnitude f the stresses that may be alternately applied and removed without rupturing the material depends on the number of repetitions of the cycle; the intervening periods of rest; the thermal, electric, and magnetic conditions, as well as the presence of secondary stresses. While we are unable to formulate the law between the magnitude f repeated stresses necessary to produce rupture and the length of time during which these alternating stress may be applied before rupture, my experience is that the time increases as the magnitude of the force decreases, according to a law which, to a first approximation, is exponential. In other words, F = Ce-t where F = magnitude f alternating stresses; = time for which stresses are continued; C = constant, which' depends on the conditions under which the operations are carried out. It is quite probable that the same type of law holds for the magnitude of a continuous force and its duration. When a rod of steel is subjected to the blows of a drilling hammer several things happen. First, one end is struck by the hammer and the other end is driven into the rock, thus causing a bodily displacement of the entire material of the steel drill. The greatest stresses involved in this bodily displacement are located at the two ends of the steel and manifest themselves by the distortion of these parts. Second, after the blow has been delivered the steel drill, due partly to its own resiliency and partly to the resiliency of the rock, experiences a vibratory motion as a whole, this motion is quite similar to the bouncing of a rubber ball thrown violently upon a smooth pavement. Third, the free vibration of the drill is determined only by its own natural period of vibration. This motion involves all the characteristics f any vibrating body emitting sound. IF the ball mill is considered only from an energy standpoint, it can be thought of as a converter of kinetic energy into heat energy and surface energy. The law of the conservation of energy must apply to the ball mill as it does to any machine or process in nature. The heat energy output of the ball mill is apparent to any casual observer of the operating mill since the outflow pulp will be appreciably warmer than the inflow water and rock. The rock in the ball mill is crushed by shearing of its ionic bonding caused by some impact-induced stresses beyond the elastic limit. As the bonds holding the mineral crystal lattices together are ruptured, new surface area is created on each unit of which a definite number of unsaturated bonds exist. Such unsaturated energy of bonding may be termed the "surface energy," and is a potential energy figure. This created energy was withdrawn from the ball mill system and represents an absorption, or disappearance of heat. To reduce the size of the rock, surface area must be created and with it the at- tendant characteristic surface energies of the minerals concerned. Thus the creation of surface energy, from an energy viewpoint, is the creation of useful work by the ball mill. Because of the controversial nature of the energy efficiency figures for modern operating ball mills, it seemed worthwhile to approximate the ordinary magnitude of such efficiencies from the above viewpoint. This was done by an energy balance of the three aforementioned forms of energy, kinetic, heat, and surface energy, for two 9Y2x10-ft grate-type ball mills grinding cement raw materials. Kinetic energy input to the balls was approximated as closely as possible while the heat energy output was measured by means of a thermometer and water and rock flow rates. The assumption was made

VARYING in thickness and in number from place to place, coal seams in the Canadian Rockies also range in pitch from nearly horizontal to vertical, sometimes with overturns. Over the entire coal-bearing area there are considerable differences of rank in coals of the same geological age, and there are marked differences in ash content and washability characteristics. Correlation of seams at mining operations within a few miles of each other has often proved impossible. These factors influence mining methods, and, of course, production results. The oldest coal formations of western Canada are of Lower Cretaceous age, as the carboniferous sediments are marine and contain no coal. Coal is also present in formations of Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary ages. The rank of coal varies from semianthracite in some operations in the Kootenay and Luscar formations of the Lower Cretaceous in the Rockies to lignite in the Tertiary fields of the Saskatchewan prairies. Fig. 1 shows the general extent of the formations.

With a platinum electrode the Eh-pH response in aqueous systems follows an empirical relation [Eh = E- 0.059 pH](1) where E usually carries a value between 0.8 and 0.9 v. The same potential (E) is observed with a number of other noble metal electrodes in the absence of surface poisoning and of other well-defined redox couples. Many sulfide mineral electrodes also respond in a similar manner in solutions containing their respective ions over wide pH ranges, especially in the alkaline pH region. Such a parallelism between noble metal and sulfide mineral electrodes points to certain implications of their surface conditions, and the flotation and leaching behaviors of sulfide minerals under aerated conditions may be inferred with respect to the foregoing Eh-pH response. Comparison of Sulfide Mineral and Noble Metal Electrodes [Fig. 1] shows the Eh-pH response of pyrite, galena, chalcocite, and pyrrhotite electrodes, reported by Sato, and some experimental points obtained with a platinum electrode in distilled water. NAME "Utah" is derived from the name of the Indian tribe, variously spelled "Yuta," "Ute," "Youta." "Uta." "Eutaw," and finally "Utah." It means "in the tops of the mountains," or "on the heights." The state emblem is the "Beehive," typical of industry. State nickname is "Beehive State." AREA Utah is the tenth state in area. It contains 84.990 square miles, of which 2.806 miles are water. When admitted as a territory in 1850. Utah included all the area from the east line of California to the summit of the Rocky Mountains between the 37th and 42nd parallels, which embraced practically all of the present state of Nevada, all of western Colorado, part of Idaho and part of Wyoming, in addition to the present area of Utah.

The camphor-anthracene system was chosen as a transparent low-melting analog of the zirconium carbide -graphite system. Camphor and zirconium car -bide both grow nonfaceted, while casting of mixtures yields platelets of both anthracene and graphite. Zone melting of thin layers of organic was observed under the microscope. Irregular lamellar structures were produced at high values of the ratio of the temperature gradient G to the zoning rate V. The anthracene invariably led the camphor, indicating lower kinetic undercooling for the anthracene. The lamellar spacing was an order of magnitude greater than typical spacings for metal eutectic systems. Exact behavior depended on orientation of the anthracene. Oriented dendritic structures were produced at low values of G/V. Transient and oscillatory behavior were also observed—much of it unexpected. A.RC-CAST refractory carbide-graphite mixtures are promising thermal-shock resistant materials. Oriented structures of these materials would be superior to arc-cast materials for many applications. Mollard and Flemings1 and Cline2 have shown that aligned structures can be obtained for a wide range of Pb-Sn alloys. However, these metals both solidify in a nonfaceted manner while graphite yields platelets or flakes. In addition only small diameter samples of Pb-Sn alloys were produced because it was necessary to avoid free convection and to have high temperature gradients. The purpose of the present work was twofold: 1) To observe the solidification of a transparent low-melting analog of carbide-graphite systems and 2) to see if larger diameter samples can be produced. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE When zirconium carbide-graphite mixtures are cast, the resulting structure naturally depends on composition. Carbide-rich mixtures yield metal-like nonfaceted carbide dendrites in a eutectic matrix. Graphite-rich alloys have graphite platelets in a eutectic matrix. Empirically it was found that camphor-anthracene mixtures produce similar structures with camphor being nonfaceted and anthracene forming plates. The organic eutectic melted at 116°C and was composed of 78 wt pet camphor.3 The camphor used was U.S.P. grade from Fisher Scientific Company; the anthracene was 98+ pet fro Aldrich Chemical Co. The impurity content is judged to be on the order of 1 pet. Mixtures ranging from 50 to 88 wt pet camphor were employed for the experiments. All but one of the experiments were performed on the microscope-stage zone melting apparatus described in detail elsewhere.4 The organic mixtures were contained in horizontal cells made of microscope slides or cover glasses. In most of the cells the organic was present as a very thin layer, thus giving almost two-dimensional growth behavior. The cells were moved slowly under a heated wire, which caused a molten zone to move through the solid at rates ranging from 0.01 to 5.4 cm per hr. The temperature gradient was estimated before moving the zone by measuring the distance between the line where all solid was melted (freezing point) and that where solid first began to melt (eutectic temperature). The temperature gradient was found to be 465°C per cm in the thinnest cells used, which were made by pressing together two microscope cover slips in the organic melt and then rapidly withdrawing them. RESULTS The experimental results are described in four parts: simultaneous growth, dendritic growth, irregular growth, and transients and erratic phenomena.
