Hydrometallurgical processes for copper flotation concentrates avoid the SO2 emission problems associated with smelting, but they require oxidation of copper to obtain solubilization during leaching. The resulting copper ions must be reduced to metal, which normally requires large amounts of energy or energy equivalent reagents such as hydrogen or iron. The conventional reduction method is electrowinning which is labor intensive and involves 35 to 40% of both the entire operating and capital cost of the better hydrometallurgical processes. There is considerable incentive to reduce the cost and energy required for producing copper ions from solution. Furthermore, it is thermodynamically possible to do this using sulfur contained in the concentrate itself. In fact, the thermodynamic potential of oxidizing sulfur from S+4 to the S+6 state is greater than required to reduce cupric ion to metallic copper.1 Realization of this potential in a practical process would significantly reduce the cost of hydrometallurgical processing of sulfide concentrates because sulfur would become a cost-free reducing agent. An apparently practical method is to use SO: and HSO3 ions, obtained by ammonia scrubbing of SO2 from a concentrate roaster gas, to reduce leached copper to metal in an autoclave. This reduction step is the Jumau 1907 A series of steps, including sulfite reduction, constituting a crude flowsheet was suggested by Parker in 1976.3 The present paper describes a detailed complete. sulfite process flowsheet based on materials and energy balances, discusses the chemistry, and discusses further work that is required to develop this process. Process materials, utilities costs, and energy requirements are projected to be unusually low because of the utilization of sulfur from the concentrate. Process Description The sulfite reduction process requires a copper concentrate containing approximately as much sulfur on a weight basis as copper. For those few concentrates that are deficient in sulfur, additional sulfur can generally be obtained by allowing more pyrite to float in the concentration process. The process steps, shown in [Fig. 1], are (1) a fluid bed roast of the concentrate, (2) a leach of the roaster calcine using recycled barren liquor from the reduction autoclave, (3) scrubbing of the SO2 gas with ammonium sulfite liquor to produce ammonium bisulfite, (4) reduction and precipitation of copper in an autoclave by combining part of the SO2 scrubber effluent (SO5

THE geophysical scene shifts and alters, the emphasis changes, and new possibilities loom, but the tendency is always towards widening the field and deepening the analytical penetration. Seismic methods have had their heyday, the torsion balance is being displaced by the gravimeter, electrical methods are showing deeper penetration, soil analysis is the newest tool, and gamma-ray logging appears on the horizon. One of the striking features of re- cent geophysical work in the oil fields has been the marked decrease in the number of seismic crews employed. Although the percentage of company crews is believed to have increased appreciably. the sum total has fallen sharply, as shown by the figures for the Gulf Coast area. About two years ago probably over 100 seismic parties were operating there, whereas now there are only about 35. This decrease may be partly due to the low prices of petroleum with a consequent reluctance to spend money to increase crude-oil re- serves but more probably to the fact that reflection and refraction shooting have been carried on so extensively that they have been applied to a large pro- portion of the areas in which they may reasonably be expected to succeed. Some of the earlier enthusiasm, particularly over reflection prospecting, may have erred on the side of over- optimism; some of the present curtailment may be due to over pessimism; but in the opinion of various observers seismic work at the present rate seems to be at it- optimum. It nevertheless remains pre-eminent as a technique for detailing structures in areas where good reflections can be obtained and is the only method that will give accurate depth to definite beds. Results may be poor in certain areas but many regions still remain wherein it can be applied, so that plenty of structural mapping remains to be done by the reflection seismic method.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) UNDER the names of Conservation, Social Justice, the New Nationalism, and Progressive Democracy, many earnest reformers are calling for a new system of Federal government to replace the one which they ascribe to our fathers, and declare to have been outgrown. They are proposing the lease by the United States of certain natural resources on the public domain, for the profit of the U. S. Treasury, instead of the sale of such resources to private citizens or associations of citizens. In the present paper, I shall try to show that this notion is neither new nor good. It is clear that the United States is owner, as well as sovereign, of public lands acquired through conquest or purchase from other nations, as it was owner of the public lands expressly ceded to it by the original thirteen States. Its policy with regard to such lands involves, therefore, two entirely distinct questions: What shall it do as owner ? and, What shall it do as sovereign ? The latter question, it must be confessed, has played but a small part in our history. All the prerogatives of sovereignty which were not explicitly conferred upon the Federal government by the original States were retained by them. The ownership or control of precious or other metals or minerals in the earth, for instance, was thus reserved to the several sovereign States. New York, South Carolina, and other States have passed laws on this subject, without regard to Federal authority. As new States have been successively admitted to the Union, the tacitly accepted theory has been,. that they thereby acquired all the reserved rights of the original States. These newer States largely outnumber the first. thirteen; and it is inconceivable that they would submit to any deprivation of sovereignty based on historical grounds. Experimental data are presented showing the influence of size consist and firing rate upon the performance of bituminous coal-fired, single-retort, industrial underfeed stokers. Size segregation, degradation, and distributor data are also included. The conclusion is reached that size consist of the fuel as fired, is a critical factor in its performance on this class of equipment.

This paper is concerned with the description of grinding characteristics in a batch grinding system. A mathematical model was developed and used for simulating the system on an analog computer. A general equation describing the change of selected size fractions with respect to time is presented. The empirical verification of the model is discussed. In order to understand the performance of a grinding system, it would be desirable to have a mathematical description of the system's behavior. The development of a mathematical model to describe the performance of a batch dry-grinding operation was investigated. This is the first step toward reaching the objective of a practical mathematical description of a grinding system that could be employed for process control and optimization of a simple or complex grinding circuit. Although this article is concerned only with batch grinding performance, experimental work is being conducted to extend the model to continuous grinding systems. BASIC PROCESS CONSIDERATIONS In a paper dealing with the probability theory of wet ball milling, Roberts1 correlated the rate of change of oversize material, C, with energy input, E, as follows where the energy input is expressed in power/unit mass and k is a constant for each particle size. Experimental grinding studies were made by Bowdish2 to extend the previous work of Roberts. The work of Bowdish also showed that the rate of breaking of oversize particles in a ball mill is proportional to the concentration of oversize particles present. He further demonstrated that breaking of oversize particles is proportional to the surface area of the balls used for grinding. Rate equations were presented and it was concluded that grinding could be considered as a first order phenomenon according to the rate equation [2] di which is in accordance with Eq. 1. In Eq. 2, the effect of ball area is included in the constant k,. Other rate equations were reported to show the effect of a change in ball area and removal of fines during grinding. Correlation studies made by Arbiter and BhranY indicate a first-order rate equation for quartz; however, their data showed less than first-order rates existed for some of the other materials evaluated. More recently Kelsall4 has shown that the rate of breakage of any narrow size range of quartz could be described by a first-order rate equation. Several other investigators5-7 have described grinding behavior in terms of rate equations or kinetics. In general, the rate equations have been described for each particle size; however, the interactions between sizes and the overall relationships that exist have not been considered, at least not in the form of solving a group of simultaneous differential equations. Extensive work has been conducted by various investigators using a probabilistic approach which has expanded stein's' earlier work. Selection and breakage matrices are incorporated in the probabilistic model as contrasted with the deterministic method presented here. A batch grinding operation may be considered as an unsteady-state process from the standpoint that the conditions within the mill are a function of time. Therefore, a plot of mass fraction of the i-th size versus time would give a set of curves as shown in Fig. 1. In these curves X , represents the mass fraction of large size material, X2 intermediate size, and X3 small size material. An examination of these curves shows a strong similarity to the curves that would be obtained from a chemical reaction of the type9 A?B?C, [3] where A would be comparable to the largest size material being broken to an intermediate size, 3, and

HUNT and Jackson' have recently suggested that binary eutectics might be classified according to the entropy of fusion of the component phases. Such a classification was in fact proposed2 some time ago by the authors and the purpose of this communication is to present some supporting evidence. As pointed out by Hunt and Jackson' typical metals of low entropy of fusion, ?S, tend to form normal eutectics (using Scheil's terminology3). Where one phase is metallic (low ?S) and the other nonmetallic (high AS) then anomalous structures are formed. These anomalous structures may either be regular (e.g., Bi-Sn)or irregular (e.g., A1-Si). Finally Hunt and Jackson suggest that where both phases are of high ?S regular faceted structures are formed. In the proposed classification2 the ratio of the entropies of fusion is taken as the quantitative parameter, i.e., ?Sa/?SB = E, where e > 1.0. An extensive literature survey has been carried out2,4 for reliable photomicrographs of eutectic structures. The structures, numbering 151, have been classified into two classes, viz., normal (i.e., lamellar and rodlike) and anomalous. The latter group has been arbitrarily subdivided into regular and irregular anomalous eutectics. Details and sources of the structures are given elsewhere.2,4 In the absence of better thermodynamic data the value of E has been determined for each of the systems making the following assumptions and approximations: l) The entropy of fusion of solid solutions may be calculated additively;5 ii) Inter metallic compounds are treated similarly but with the addition of the following term for fully ordered structures.5 -4.573(Ni lOg10 Nl + N2 log10 N2) where Nl and N2 are the atomic fractions. It might be argued that the entropies of fusion are meaningless as the eutectic phases form at some temperature (T,°K) below their true melting point (Ta or Tb). As AS, = Lo/To if La the latent heat of fusion of a, is assumed independent of temperature, the actual entropy change AS& is given by La/Te. The ratio of entropies of fusion then becomes Fig. 1 shows E' plotted against cumulative totals for normal and anomalous systems from which it is seen that normal eutectics predominate at low values of E'; e.g., some 90 pct of normal systems lie below E' = 1.5 with 65 pct of anomalous systems above this value. Fig. 1 also shows that the regular anomalous structures occur mostly at low values of c' possibly suggesting growth more akin to normal than anomalous growth. The choice of c as a classification parameter was based on nucleation concepts, it being observed that metals widely separated in Sundquist and Mondolfo's8 nucleation series were anomalous and those close together normal. The basis of these classification views is really outside the intended scope of this communication but it is hoped to explain them fully in the near future.7 Having arrived at this entropy of fusion classification by nucleation considerations it is interesting to note that Hunt and Jackson's ideas are based on growth considerations. Elsewhere one of the authors4 has shown that an even better classification of the metallographic structures reviewed is obtained from purely conventional heterogeneous nucleation concepts. It has been found that systems having a value of the parameter +b less than 0.28 are almost certainly normal and above this anomalous: V, is the gram atomic volume. This parameter is nevertheless closely related to c and c', these being an approximation of p. The parameter is also related to the other classification3,8,9 which have met with any success in the past. JULY was a month of great turmoil, both economic and political, in many parts of the world. Instead of conditions improving, they seem to have been getting worse. In Ireland, civil war is still in progress. Germany was in the throes of a political upheaval. The meaning of the assassination of Rathenau became clear. It evinced the development of a class struggle between the bourgeois and socialistic parties which may rock the country to its foundation and will increase the difficulties of arranging things with the French and solving the reparations problem. In Poland, a similar contest is developing. Austria is already so completely contaminated by the socialist element that it is unable to get outside assistance and is thus falling into a state of despair but little short of what prevails in Russia. The conference at the Hague came to an abortive end for the reason that it was impossible to discuss affairs with the Russians in any reasonable way. The Germans declared their inability to meet the reparation payment that fell clue on July 15 and the Commissioners for the Allies granted them an abate-ment of a portion thereof and are listening attentively to the supplication of the Germans for a moratorium of one or two years. In the United States, July was a month of widespread labor troubles, accompanied by a great deal of disorder and violence, which led to detachments of the National Guard being called out in several states. The railway shopmen, about 400,000 in number, struck on July 1. The road maintenance men decided not to strike, but many thousands of them quit work without the sanc-tion of their union. There were more strikes in the textile industry in New England and in similar industries all over the country. Early in July, it was estimated that about 1,250,000 men were out on strike. The coal strike continued. Early in the month the President summoned operators and miners to Washing-ton and submitted a plan for the compromising of disputes. After a week's consideration the miners re-fused flatly to agree to anything. The majority of the operators consented to accept the proposed arbitration, but a minority refused. Following this abortive at-tempt the President dismissed the conference with the injunction "to return to your mine properties and resume operation." Production has not increased.

HE valuable mineral content of the current feed -*- to the Miami concentrator is as follows: copper, 0.7 pct total; molybdenum, 0.01. Flotation of this ore yields a sulphide concentrate containing: chalco- cite, 44 pct; molybdenite, 0.5; pyrite, 50.0; insol, 5.5. A combination of potassium ethyl xanthate and pentasol amyl xanthate as collectors, and pine oil as frother, are used in this flotation. Rejection of pyrite is encouraged by holding the amount of collectors used to the minimum consistent with copper recovery and by operating at high alkalinity (equivalent to 0.35-0.40 lb CaO per ton solution of pH 11.0). The molybdenum recovery in the sulphide concentrates under the above flotation conditions is approximately 50 pct of that originally present in the ore. Taking into account the acid soluble molybdenum, indicated molybdenite recovery is 75 to 80 pct. The attempt to separate the molybdenite into an acceptable molybdenum product begins with the bulk sulphide flotation concentrate just described. This concentrate is composed of chalcocite, whose floatability has been promoted to the fullest extent possible for the sake of its recovery from the ore, together with the pyrite which has been activated along with the copper mineral. The problem is to deaden the copper and iron minerals, and to float the molybdenite. Obviously in the accomplishment of this end, conditioning and preparation of the pulp, prior to flotation, plays an all important role. The first step is thickening to 50 to 60 pct solids, with milk of lime added to the thickener feed to maintain an alkalinity of the pulp equivalent to a pH of 8.5 to 8.8 during its residence in the thickener. The purpose of the thickening is primarily to reduce the volume of pulp for subsequent treatment. However, the relatively prolonged retention of the pulp in the thickener at the desired alkalinity is known to have a favorable depressing effect upon pyrite. There is a limit for this alkalinity above which a depressing effect upon molybdenite occurs. The thickened pulp (alkalinity: 0.015 lb CaO per ton, pH 8.8), discharges into an agitator, retention time approximately 2 hr, to which additional lime is added to raise the alkalinity to 0.35 to 0.40 lb CaO per ton solution, pH 11.6. This additional lime is required for pyrite depression and can be tolerated without loss of molybdenite because of the limited time of contact in the conditioner tank. The pulp leaving the lime conditioner passes through two successive steaming tanks, which are mechanically agitated, and into which live steam is admitted directly into the pulp near the bottom of the tanks. The temperature of the pulp is maintained as near boiling as possible. The steaming time is approximately 4 hr. The pulp leaving the last steamer has an alkalinity of about 0.04 lb Cao per ton solution, pH 8.7. It is believed that oxidation of the copper and iron sulphides occurs during steaming, the resulting sulphates reacting the calcium hydroxide to calcium sulphate and thus reducing the alkalinity. Since the steamer-feed solution is already saturated with calcium sulphate, the calcium sulphate produced during steaming is precipitated. It is believed that this calcium sulphate is precipitated preferentially on copper and iron mineral surfaces thus decreasing their floatability. Aside from the "lime chemistry" during steaming, pine oil is displaced from the pulp and xanthate decomposed, which has a major effect upon the deadening of the copper and iron sulphides. Following steaming, the hot pulp is admitted to another conditioning tank wherein it is aerated, primarily for cooling, but incidentally for additional oxidation of the copper and iron sulphides. The resulting "deadened" pulp is then diluted to 20 pct solids, a specific collector for molybdenite, ordinary stove oil, is added and the separation of the molybdenite by flotation is undertaken at a pH of 8.5 to 8.8 in standard Miami air-flotation ma-chines. B-22 frother is used when necessary. A re-grind of the thickened rougher concentrates is made prior to the first cleaning operation chiefly for rejection of insoluble in subsequent flotation. The cleaner concentrate is then stepped up to 90 pct MoS, in an 8-cell Denver flotation machine No. 18. Sodium silicate is added to the cleaner circuit. Its effect is to flocculate molybdenite and stabilize the froth. In summary, it may be stated: 1. Separation of molybdenite into an acceptable product from sulphide copper concentrates by flotation involves preliminary preparation and conditioning of the pulp, which is of major importance. 2. This preparation and conditioning consists of several successive steps: (A) Thickening to 50 to 60 pct solids at controlled alkalinity to reduce volume of pulp and to contribute to depression of pyrite. (B) Agitation at high-pulp density for limited time with additional lime to provide for depression of pyrite. (C) Steaming at high-pulp density for decomposition of xanthate and xanthate surface films, evolution of pine oil, and oxidation of sulphide minerals other than molybdenite. The latter involves sulphating of lime with probable precipitation of calcium sulphate preferentially on copper and iron minerals. (D) Aeration at high-pulp density for cooling, and for further oxidation of copper and iron sulphide minerals. (E) Dilution of pulp to 20 pct solids and addition of specific collector for molybdenite, common stove oil. It is hardly necessary to point out that this rather drastic procedure for depression of previously activated copper and iron sulphide minerals, without at the same time depressing molybdenite, is possible due to the inherently high floatability and refractory nature of molybdenite. However, molybdenite is susceptible to depression by excessive lime which must therefore be limited to the amount consistent with satisfactory molybdenite recovery. The steaming procedure is being carried on at Miami Copper Co. under license agreement with Janney, Nokes, and Johnson, holders of letters patent on the process.

It is hardly necessary to point out that this rather drastic procedure for depression of previously activated copper and iron sulphide minerals, without at the same time depressing molybdenite, is possible due to the inherently high floatability and refractory nature of molybdenite. However, molybdenite is susceptible to depression by excessive lime which must therefore be limited to the amount consistent with satisfactory molybdenite recovery. The steaming procedure is being carried on at Miami Copper Co. under license agreement with Janney, Nokes, and Johnson, holders of letters patent on the process.

In the dry regions of the globe many silver-deposits display certain remarkable features, which at the same time are so totally unlike anything met with among ore-bodies elsewhere that they hare long presented exceptional dificulties, not only to a satisfactory explanation of their origin, but to economical milling. A most striking peculiarity of these ores is the haloid character of many of their bonanzas. To this fact more than to any other may be ascribed most of the unusual uncertainties of mining-operations in desert countries—the marvelous local richness of the ores under certain conditions and the often abrupt transition to utter poverty; the inadequacy of ordinary prospecting customs and the constant devising of new exploratory methods; the unaccountable losses in smelting and the continual change in treatment-practice. For these anomalies certain climatic conditions seem to be chiefly responsible.

There seems to be no positive correlation between the physical or geological nature of the reservoir, and the chemical composition or phase characteristics of its contents. Knowledge of the chemical make-up and phase behavior of gas-condensate reserves is needed to cope with many problems. A knowledge of the chemical composition and phase characteristics of the reservoir material is necessary to properly design a gasoline or recycling plant, to estimate natural gas and condensate reserves, to enable the operator to study the economic and technical aspects of various methods of operation and development, and to carry Out the plan of operating subsurface and surface lease equipment. This information is often useful in questions of mineral ownership, proration, legal position, and taxation. EACH branch of engineering seems to depend on the cooperation and contribution of some other branches to enable it to produce more efficient methods and appliances for man to use. The purpose of this paper is to show approximately the gain in efficiency of self-propelled merchant ships when steel of greater elasticity is substituted for mild steel in some of the strength members and alu-minum alloy is substituted in some of the parts where strength is not essential. The new steel will have some greater strength and a much greater elastic limit in the as-rolled condition, and must be readily weld-able under ordinary conditions of shipbuilding. Naturally, its cost may be more than mild steel, but if the demand is great that excess cost may be reduced to an amount that will make its use more economical than that of the present mild steel. There appears to be a well defined axiom in engineering today that to use the least power to carry a given load the weight of the carrier must be reduced to a minimum. This minimum must be, of course, consistent with the necessary strength, rigidity and durability and it must not be attained at an excessive cost where the fixed charges of the carrier will exceed the savings in, operating the motive power. Recent railroad equipment is a notable example of this, and in these trains alloy steels and aluminum together with less weight per horsepower of the power plant are reducing the weight of the carrier and hence the total power required for moving the paying load. Before considering the application of these metals to shipbuilding, it is well to explain some of the fundamentals of ship design.

Wells completed during the year totaled 198, of which 168 were oil wells, compared with 238 and 215, respectively, of 1934. No important discovery was made during the year. The only new field found was Valea Calugareasca, where the Credit Minier completed a small well on the westward plunge of the anticline. Drilling higher on the structure will probably prove the field to be of greater importance than the results of the discovery well indicate. The only other developments of importance were the extension of the Bucsani field, the opening up of a new area on the northeast of the salt at Moreni by Credit Minier and a minor extension of the West Gura Ocnitei field. At Calinesti, on the cast extension of the Moreni field, exploration work continued and a gas well was completed, but oil in commercial quantities is yet to be found.

The day by day loss of industrial plants to gas and oil is chiefly by default. The coal industry is not selling its superior economy, safety, and other advantages to its customers. THE position of the coal industry has been affected by a wide variety of developments in the production and use of energy. The tempo of development and change has been increasing and the end is not in sight. Legislation is currently being proposed for commercial use of atomic power, and the employment of atomic energy in significant quantity will probably occur about the same time as the decline in production of petroleum and natural gas. But these developments are in the future and have little immediate effect on utilization and marketing of coal. While no one should try to suppress or retard the development of a new and economical source of energy, both the coal and private utility industry should be allowed to question how the nuclear power is to be used, who is to use it, and who is going to pay for it. The taxpayers have a monopoly on fissionable material and the knowledge to employ it. Any commercial use must stem from this source. It is not hard to visualize either taxpayer-subsidized private utility atomic power plants on one hand and super TVA's on the other. In view of the gains of gas and oil in the home heating field, it is interesting to compare the 1940 and 1950 census reports on the kind of fuel used for heating in occupied dwelling units. Table I shows that whereas coal provided 77 pct of the fuel for central heating (furnaces and boilers) in 1940, it was down to 45.4 pct in 1950. However, only about 1 1½ million units were lost in this 10-year period. In the non-central heating category, which principally includes stoves, the percentage declined from 39.2 to 25.6, but the units declined about 2½ million in number. The big increase was in heating units designed to burn gas and oil. Use of wood for central heating declined about one-third. Data on amount of fuels used for residential heating are not available, but information is on hand for residential and comnlercial space heating, see Table 11. Commercial space heating includes office buildings, churches, schools. and similar structures. The annual use of bituminous coal in these two categories declined about 1 million tons in the 10-year period. Other forms of solid fuel showed greater losses, except wood, which remained the same. Domestic stokers reached their high point in 1948 with about 1,200,000 in use. At the end of 1951 there were approximately 1,116,790 stokers in use. Conversions to gas and oil have been from hand-fired heating plants in the ratio of about 7 to 1 compared to stokers. In other words, for every one stoker which has been converted to gas or oil, seven hand-fired units have been converted to gas or oil. A bare recital of these data would indicate that the coal industry is holding its own reasonably well. However, 93.4 pct of the new homes built in 1951 were heated by gas or oil. Oil-burning equipment was installed in 37.8 pct and gas equipment in 55.6 pct of the new homes. This indicates that the public prefers gas when it is available, and that oil is second choice, with all forms of solid fuel apparently used when it is unavoidable. It must be pointed out, however, that during the period of rapid expansion of gas pipelines gas has been sold for house heating at prices that are in some cases actually lower than coal prices, or very nearly on a par. Gas has been sold at wells at far below the comparable price for oil produced from the same wells, and far below its actual worth. This situation is being remedied at the present time by increases in gas prices at the wells. For example, the wellhead price of gas in Texas averaged 7.494 per Mcf in 1952. In 1949 it was 4.59c per Mcf. This increase in price is being reflected in pipeline gas prices, and in most of the markets served by the pipelines the tendency is to get it out of the bargain basement type of sales. The American Gas Association estimates that at the end of 1952 there were in the United States about 11 million customers for gas house-heating, and the Association expects additional gains each year until around 18 million homes will be heated by gas in 1975. By 1975 there should be 60 million dwelling units to be heated in the United States, if dwelling units increase at the same rate as the population. If the gas industry heats 18 million dwelling units by that time, this still leaves 42 million units to be heated by some other fuel. If oil is used to heat 18 million dwelling units in that same year, 24 million would of necessity be heated by coal, coke, wood, electricity, or another fuel. The total number of dwelling units using coal listed in the 1950 Census was 18,776,000, so it would appear that coal has a chance at least to stand still in the tonnage sold for domestic use. An analysis was made of the influence of floating molten zone traversal on the purification of tungsten rods and the effect of this purification on the brittle -to-ductile transition temperature. The major impurities detectable in the original rods, i.e., molybdenum and oxygen, were reduced by zone refining from 30 to 3 Ppm. Changes in the trace amounts of other impurities could not be quantitatively determined since they were below the limit of detection. Tensile tests on 3-mil wires, drawn from these rods and recrystallized to 17,000 grains per sq mm, showed a transition temperature of 60°C for the zone Purified and 175°C for the original material. 1 HE brittle-to-ductile transition temperature is manifest mainly in the bee metals, iron,' molybdenum, chromium,3 tungsten,4 and niobium. Since many of these metals cannot be fabricated at room temperature in a commercially pure annealed poly-crystalline state, a considerable amount of work has been done on evaluating the influence of purification on the transition temperature in order to determine indirectly whether the fabricability of these metals can be improved by removing impurities. Smith and Rutherford8 showed that the transition temperature of iron is lowered significantly by zone purification. Working with chromium, Edwards, Nish, and wain7 found also that purification appreciably lowered the transition temperature. A similar evaluation has so far not been reported for tungsten, probably because of the difficulties in obtaining tungsten in a purified polycrystalline state. carlson8 and, more recently, schadler9 have purified tungsten rods by floating zone traversal, but after zone traversal, their rods were single crystals. To obtain high-purity polycrystalline tungsten, a technique has to be round for transforming the zone-purified single crystal material into a suitable polycrystalline structure. The purpose of this investigation was to obtain zone-purified tungsten in a suitable polycrystalline state and then to evaluate the effect of zone purification on the transition temperature.
