Minerals are the basis of modern civilization: their exploitation and effective utilization are a yard- stick for measuring the comparative prosperity of different nations. This is particularly true in India where industrialization is just beginning to pick up speed. Production targets for our Fourth Five Year Plan (1966-71) are far ahead of the figures for, say, 1950 (the year we won independence) and show the extent of the expansion. Many problems remain to be solved, not least of which is the shortage of raw materials. India is no novice at utilizing minerals. Archaeological ruins at Harappa and at other historical places in the country show evidence of the fact that the ancient Indians not only knew the art of winning minerals from the ground over 6000 years ago-they were also well acquainted with metallurgy. Some of the present sites of mineral exploitation are the same as those our ancestors worked for many centuries.

The possibility of applying a neutron activation technique for silver exploration is considered. A mobile positive-ion accelerator type neutron source is used to irradiate a small area of rock or soil in situ. By using a short period of irradiation and gamma ray spectral analysis, a technique is shown for silver exploration. Two different mobile units are described. Laboratory and preliminary field tests both indicate that a sensitivity of less than 1 oz of silver per ton of ore can be achieved. The increasing consumption of silver for industrial uses and also for coinage has caused a serious shortage of silver in this country. The silver shortage has been reviewed and analyzed by kiilsgaard1 who concludes that, "The best hope for meeting future demands for silver is through accelerated exploration for precious ores." As almost all the exposed "bonanza" type silver deposits evidently have been found, it is urgent that some sensitive geophysical technique be found to detect large, extended, but generally low-grade, secondary ores, as well as hidden vein deposits. Silver is easily made radioactive by exposure to slow neutrons; hence a neutron activation method appears promising for locating silver deposits. The principles of mineral beneficiation using neutron activation techniques were discussed some years ago.2-4 Using the same approach, a preliminary description5 has been published of neutron activation as a mineral exploration tool. An exploration technique is described in which silver is made radioactive in situ and detected with a gamma radiation counter. The technique is similar to the well-known method used for uranium exploration. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS Elemental silver consists of two isotopes, Ag107 and Ag109, having naturally occurring isotopic abundances of 51.4% and 48.6%, respectively. For short periods of irradiation of silver by thermal neutrons, the long-lived 250 day, half-life isotope, Ag110m, is not produced in significant quantities. However, significant quantities of 2.3 min half-life Ag108 and 24.5 sec half-life Agl10 are formed by the following reactions. Ag108 and Agl10 emit a 0.44 Mev (million electron volts) and a 0.66 Mev gamma ray, respectively. Ag107 + n + Ag108 (2.3 min) Ag109 + n + Ag110 (24.5 sec). Because of the large capture cross section (110 barns) of Ag109, and short half-life of Ag110 (24.5 sec), the 0.66-Mev gamma ray is the most prominent emission from silver for neutron activation periods of about a minute's duration.* The 0.44-Mev gamma ray from Ag108 will also be present, but will be one or two orders of magnitude lower in intensity. The decay scheme of Ag110 is shown in Fig. 1. If the neutron irradiation time is limited to about 100 sec, the Ag110 activity will essentially reach saturation and can be used to detect the presence of silver. In a neutron flux of 10 8 neutrons/cm2/set, the induced 0.66-Mev activity in 1 g of silver will be about 2 x 107 disintegrations per sec. This is about 1000 times the measurable gamma activity of 1 g of uranium in equilibrium with all its decay products; hence there is ample activity for detection. Under the same conditions of activation, most of the other elements do not reach this relatively high disintegration rate. Although this is in favor of the proposed technique, other problems must be considered. For mobile operation, it is desirable to obtain the largest neutron flux to weight ratio. Hence we have used a small 150-kev accelerator-type neutron source rather than an isotopic source such as an americium-beryllium neutron source. By use of remote control system, an accelerator-type neutron source can be safely used without the massive shield required for an isotopic source. Moreover, an accelerator-type source is more versatile in that it allows one to use a flux of either 14-Mev or 3-Mev neutrons, depending on whether a tritium or a deuterium target is used. With a 14-Mev generator, one can obtain a flux of 10 9 neutrons/cm 2/sec, and with a 3-Mev generator, the flux is generally two orders of magnitude less. The main purpose of this work was to study the effect of gold on the activity coefficient of oxygen in the liquid Fe-Au alloy and to determine how copper and silver change the activity coefficient of oxygen. A preliminary investigation has been made of equilibrium in the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen in some of the liquid gold alloys. The experimental method, which has been described in detail elsewhere,' consisted of bubbling accurately known H-A-water vapor mixtures through the Fe-Au alloys contained in alumina crucibles within a vertical closed furnace. When equilibrium was reached, the samples were quenched by rapidly lowering the crucible under an atmosphere of argon to a water cooled brass fixture at the bottom of the furnace tube. The melts were found to freeze from the top in less than 4 sec. The heats were carefully prepared for oxygen analysis. The oxygen content was determined by vacuum fusion analysis.' Only high purity electrolytic materials were used in this investigation. The activity and free energy of oxygen in the liquid iron alloys were studied by means of the reaction; The data for the 80 Fe-Au alloys, obtained as a function of temperature, are summarized in Table I and presented in Fig. 1, where log is plotted against . Experiments have shown12 that the formula -S = St - (St - Se')e ne [1] expresses very well the relation between the true stress S and the true form monotonic deformation of plastic metals in single tension and compression (Fig 1). St (asymptotic or final stress), Se' (threshold stress) and ne (characteristic or specific strain) are constants, the significance of which immediately follows from Fig 1. Only at the initial stages of deformation the experimental curve runs below the theoretical curve. This may be due, at least partly, to the uneven stress distribution caused by the anisotropy of the crystals. It is now obvious that a similar formula H = Ht- (Ht- He)e ne' [2] might be valid for the relation between the hardness and the strain. The hardness can be only a function of the strain and must therefore be independent on the hydrostatic tension present in the neck during straining. Hence, if Eq 2 is correct it will also represent the relation between hardness and strain in the middle section of the neck, the strain of which is generally assumed to be almost or fully homogeneous. For aluminum, copper, and several copper alloys it is indeed observed that Eq 2 agrees very well with the experimental Vickers hardness-strain relation from zero strain on up to the strain at fracture. Moreover nc' is, for several metals fairly equal to nc- Hence H = C1 + C2S [3] C1 and C2 are constants during uniform uniaxial tension. Eq 3 was also obtained for copper by Voce.3 According to Hencky's theory4 the ratio of the Brinell or Vickers hardness and the yieldstress (expressed in kg per mm2) of a non-strainhardening metal is approximately equal to 2.8. If Eq 1, 2 and 3 are correct the ratio Ht/S, must accordingly be the same for all plastic metals and be equal to 2.8. It is now experimentally established that this ratio varies between 2.7 and 3.1 with a mean value of 2.9. Taking into account that Ht and especially St can be obtained only by extrapolation from the range of rather low strains, the agreement with the theory is very satisfactory. References 1. J. H. HENRY FAY (communication to the Secretary*).-In reply to the discussion of my paper, I wish to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the Chairman and the various gentlemen who have taken part. I regret that others have not offered criticism, for honest differences of opinion often lead to the truth, and suggest new lines of work. An experiment has been made which bears on Prof. Sauveur's discussion and which helps to emphasize the conclusion that cementation is not a factor in the hardening of: the surface. Dr. Langenberg, of the Watertown Arsenal, has heated for me, in vacuo at 1,000° C., a piece of the metal containing a hard surface. The microstructure shows uniform distribution of carbon throughout the metal, showing that no carbon has been added to .the surface and heating in vacuo has prevented any oxidation of the surface.

Six or seven years age the United States Bureau of Nines started development of instruments for the purpose of accurately measuring the vibrational movement of the earth in the vicinity of quarry blasts. V For this work a new type of seismometer has been developod.1/ A number of these have been constructed, the accessory field equipment has been assembled, and approximately 200 field tests of actual quarry blasts have been made. The results of some of these tests have been. published 2/ and others arcs the subject of two manuscripts now in preparation. So far the attention of the investigation has been centered on ascertaining the characteristics and behavior of the ground vibrations. Occasionally, when opportunity Prose, measurements of the vibrations occurring in houses or other structures caused by quarry blasts were made, but without Piny attempt et direct correlation or interpretation. During; 1936 the National Bureau of Standards conducted some experiments to determine the normal vibrations to which the walls and floors of buildings are subject. Cooperation of the Bureau of Mine's was requested in measuring the displace-ment. This afforded an opportunity to study the affect of mechanically induced vibrations end make limited comparison with previous records of vibrations from blasting. This paper duels with the experiments made in cooperation with the Bureau of Standards and includes soma comparisons with affects from quarry shots. The results are in the: nature, of , progress report only, and are not intended to draw definite conclusions. Those, tests were concerned with the determination of the maximum amplitudes of vibration possible in the floors and walls of a typical dwelling when subjected to commonly experienced vibrations. The dwelling tested was obtained by the National Bureau of Standards. It was a large four-story stucco building, 41 ft. south off the southerly curb of Park Road, in. Washington, D.C., which was constructed about 1900 and was supported on overburden. The basement floor elevation was approximately that of the pavement of Park Road. Park Road runs east and west; the front door of the house faced north.

Based on pole figure data and microstructural observations, the re-crystallization orientation found in a copper strip previously cold-rolled 99.5 pct from a single crystal with an initial (110) [112] orientation may be described as: a 30° rotation, clockwise and counterclockwise, about octahedral poles of the cold-rolled texture such that all four poles function at a low annealing temperature (400°C) and only three of them function at high temperatures (500' to 1050°C). The relative intensity of deformation stresses on various slip planes can be correlated with the choice of poles affecting the rotations found in the recrystallized orientations. ROTATIONAL reorientation about the poles of densely packed crystallographic planes is an important characteristic of secondary recrystallization" in face-centered cubic metals. Some evidence has also been interpreted to show that such a rotational relationship also exists in the primary recrys-tallization process." In an investigation of the crystallographic relationships in the recrystallization process, several aspects of the experimental procedure should be considered. With cold-rolled poly-crystalline metal as the initial material, pole figure analysis leaves many ambiguities as to whether or not simple indices can be assigned to adequately represent its orientation. The rolling texture does not consist of a single texture. Minor deformation textures are usually present. In all cases, twin textures are present. The presence of both minor and twin deformation textures influences the recrystallization texture. In order to study the recrystallization mechanism, a more precise knowledge of the history of the material before recrystallization is necessary. Tensile deformation of a single crystal usually produces residual stresses which are concentrated at slip bands. Since the exact nature and orientation of these potential nuclei sites cannot be experimentally evaluated, the tensile deformation of a single crystal was not considered adequate. From the work done by Barrett and Steadman6 n copper, it appeared that cold rolling of a single-crystal specimen with an initial (110) [112] orientation would yield a specimen which fulfills the conditions required for the present investigation, namely a highly preferred single rolling texture with relatively homogeneous stress distribution. By investigating the recrystallization texture of this material, additional details of reorientation during recrystallization might be obtained. The purpose of this paper is to describe such an investigation. Experimental Procedure Copper used in the present investigation was cathode sheet with a purity of 99.94 to 99.97 pct. A copper single-crystal specimen, 1.15x0.8720x0.5322 in. (thickness) was cut from a cylindrical crystal which was grown in a Bridgman furnace.' The cutting was accomplished on a horizontal milling machine operated at a very slow speed to obtain a (110) plane in the rolling plane and a [112] direction in the rolling direction. The disturbed surface was removed by electrolytic polishing in dilute orthophos-phoric acid (H3PO4) with a specific gravity of 1.14, and a current density of about 1 to 2 amp per sq cm. A 3-min polishing was needed to eliminate the disturbed surface causing Debye-Scherrer rings and a 45-min polish produced a surface which yielded sharp rounded Laue spots. It was estimated that about 1/16 in. of metal was removed from the original cut surface. The final orientation of this specimen before rolling was about 2" from the (110) plane in the rolling plane with a [112] direction aligned in the rolling direction. It is possible that a small amount of strain was still present in the cube despite the fact that the Laue spots seemed very sharp. It is doubtful, however, that this would be an important factor after a subsequent rolling reduction of 99.5 pct. This copper specimen was rolled on a laboratory rolling mill with two highly polished rolls 37/8 in. in diam in the following manner: 0.010 in. per pass to 50 pct reduction, 0.005 in. to 70 pct, 0.002 in. to 85 pct and, finally, 0.001 in. per pass to a 99.5 pct reduction. THE 144th* meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held in New York, Feb. 18 to 21, 1935. It consisted of the annual business meeting, 45 technical sessions at which 216 papers were presented (approximately the same number of sessions and papers as at the previous annual meeting), two sessions of the Board of Directors, three meetings of Section delegates, two formal lectures and two addresses, luncheon Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for members and guests, six group dinners and eight group luncheons, ten committee meetings, the annual reception and dinner dance, an informal dance, a smoker-dinner and the annual meeting of the Woman's Auxiliary. Attendance was generally greater than for the two preceding meetings; the statistics follow (figures are in the order 1935-1934-1933); total registration, 1609-1534-1475; dinner dance, 577-543-426; dinner-smoker, 490-425-394; informal dance, 279-295-250; women's registration, 179-160-133; general luncheons, 1132-1034-734. The Coal Division held two general sessions on Monday and a symposium on coal-mine ventilation on Tuesday morning. The Committee on Bituminous Planning, Edward Steidle, chairman, presented a report at the Monday morning session. C. B. Huntress, President of Appalachian Coals, Inc., was the principal speaker at the luncheon on Monday, at which Eli T. Conner, Chairman of the Division, presided. Mr. Huntress was preceded by Howard N. Eavenson, President of the Institute, who spoke briefly. The Sectional Committee on Classification of Coal met Wednesday afternoon. A feature of the meeting concerning three Divisions-Iron and Steel, Institute of Metals, Petroleum-was the symposium on Use of Metals in the Petroleum Industry, Thursday morning and afternoon. Five of the papers presented at this symposium have been published in METALS TECHNOLOGY'. Another feature, of general interest, was the Tuesday morning session in the Auditorium, devoted to Federal Government and Mineral Industries. Dr. C. K. Leith delivered the principal address, on "A, Mineral Policy for the United. States." . The ternary-alloy system Nb-Mo-C was investigated by means of X-ray, melting point, DTA, and metallo-graphic techniques; a complete phase diagram for temperatures above 1500°C was established. Above 1960°C, niobium monocarbide and the cubic (Bl) high-tenzperature phase in the Mo-C system form an uninterrupted series of solid solutions. The ternary range of the pseudocubic q MoCl-, is very restricted. Dimolyb-denum carbide dissolves up to 44 mol pct Nb2C (2240°C), whereas the maximum solid solubility of MO2C in Nb2C does not exceed 5 mol pct. The order-disorder transformation temperatures in Mo2C and Nb2C are lowered by the mutual metal exchanges. Six invariant (p = const) reactzons occur in the ternary system; three correspond to class 11-type four-phase reactions involving a liquid phase, one to a class I (eutectoid)-type, and two further isotherms are associated with limiting tie lines. The results of the Phase diagram investigation are discussed, and the thermodynamic interpretation identifies the low relative stability of the binary sub-carbides in conjunction with the large stability diflerences between niobium and molybdenum carbides as the cause for the formation of a stable equilibrium between the monocarbide and the metal phase in the ternary reson. Due to their refractoriness, the carbides of the high-melting transition metals have received increased interest in recent years as base materials in composite structures for aerospace applications at high temperatures and for the development of self-bonded cutting tool materials; other novel fields of application include power reactors, where operation at high temperatures becomes essential for attaining high power efficiencies. In these applications, the increased reaction rates at high temperatures require a close consideration of the chemical interactions between the alloy constituents. As a consequence, a detailed knowledge of the phase relationships in the alloy systems is required in order to provide a sound basis for developmental -type work. Partly as a result of the considerable experimental difficulties associated with the investigation of this high-melting alloy class, no complete studies of ternary metal-carbon systems have been performed until recently. Even the high-temperature phase relationships in the binary transition metal-carbon systems have been delineated only during the past few years to a degree of accuracy required for a more detailed study of ternary or higher-order alloys. In recent investigations of binary and ternary systems of refractory transition metals with carbon, boron, and silicon,&apos; alloys from the ternary systems Nb-Mo-C became of interest because of the demonstrated possibility2,3 of obtaining compatible composites based on metal + monocarbide combinations. In the meantime, however, studies in other, but related, ternary metal-carbon systems, such as Ta-W-C, have shown that the solid-state equilibria may change significantly toward higher temperatures (>2000°C), and that extrapolations based on low-temperature equilibrium data are, in general, not very reliable. Although the lower-temperature (<2000°C) phase relationships in the Nb-Mo-C system are similar to those found in Ta-W-C, a cursory thermodynamic analysis of the equilibria indicated4 that complete solid-solution formation between Mo2C and Nb2C should not occur at higher temperatures. The present work was conducted in order to experimentally verify these expectations and, in addition, to provide phase equilibrium data in the melting range of the alloys. In the boundary systems, niobium and molybdenum are known to form a continuous series of solid solutions.576 The continuous solubility was also confirmed by Kornilov and Polyakova,7,8 who also observed a minimum melting point at 22 at. pct Mo and 2345°C. The phase diagram investigations of the Nb-C system by Storms and Krikorian9 and Kimura and Sasaki10 were recently supplemented by Rudy et al.11,12 The system contains a high-melting monocarbide with the B1 structure, Table I, and a subcarbide, Nb2C, which exists in at least two different states of sublattice order at low temperatures47"-&apos;3 and a disordered state above approximately 2500°C.11,12 The melting-point measurements by Rudy et al .11,14 are in close confirmation of the data by Kimura and Sasaki.10 The rather complex phase relationships in the Mo-C system were only recently Clarified.15,18 The system is characterized by three congruently melting, intermediate phases, MozC, ? MoC1-x and a Mol-,, Table I, of which only Mo2C is stable at temperatures below 1650°C. Substoichiometric MozC exists in several states of sublattice order which interconvert in homogeneous phase transitions. Hyperstoichiometric compositions cannot exist in the ordered state. The binary system Ga-Sb has been investigated by thermal, X-ray, and metallo-graphic methods. &apos;The intermetallic compound GaSb melts at 705.9OC and forms a eutectic with antimony at 11.8 atomic pct Ga. This eutectic melts at 589.8OC. A eutectic appears to be formed at 29.8°C but is too close to the composition of pure gallium to be detected. IN the course of an investigation of the semiconducting properties of the intermetallic compound, GaSb, the phase equilibrium between gallium and antimony has been investigated. Recently, the phase diagram of similar systems, such as In-Sb,&apos; In-AS,&apos; and Bi-As3 have been determined. These diagrams have the same general appearance in that an intermetallic compound is formed at 50 atomic pct and a eutectic is formed on both sides of the intermetallic compound. Jenny,& who has been investigating the semiconducting properties of intermetallic compounds, has concluded from thermal data of several alloys that the phase diagram of the Ga-Sb system resembles those mentioned previously. This paper represents a more detailed study of the Ga-Sb equilibrium. Experimental Procedure The gallium that was used to prepare the alloys was obtained from A. D. Mackay Inc. and the Aluminum Co. of America; the latter reported the purity as 99.95 pct. The antimony was obtained from Bradley Mining Corp. who specified a purity of 99.997 pct. Since the intermetallic compound of GaSb was prepared primarily to be used for further studies of the semiconducting properties, additional purification by a standard zone-melting technique under an atmosphere of hydrogen was performed. Hall-effect measurements on this material indicated an impurity content of less than 3 ppm.5 The antimony also was purified by zone melting and used in conjunction with the compound GaSb to make the necessary alloys for the determinations of the antimony-rich side of the phase diagram. The antimony-rich alloys were chill cast in Vycor tubes which were evacuated to a pressure of less than one micron. Since these alloys expand on freezing, precautions were taken to prevent oxidation of the ingot in the event the tube fractured. To insure homogeneity, the brittle alloys were ground and then placed in the furnace for the thermal-arrest determinations. Since the cost of gallium is high, the experimental procedure was complicated somewhat because of the necessarily limited sizes of the melts. In order to economize, the gallium-rich side of the diagram was determined by using a 35 g ingot of pure gallium initially and adding increasing amounts of antimony in order to obtain additional alloys. The furnace used in the determination of the cooling curves is illustrated in Fig. 1. A 2¼ in. quartz tube, sealed at one end, was fitted with a brass flange which was attached with DeKhotinsky cement. The brass collar was water cooled to prevent the cement from softening. An "0" ring was used to provide a seal between the brass collar and the furnace cover. Nichrome ribbon was wound around a 2 ½ in. asbestos-covered copper core which was used to reduce the thermal gradient in the furnace. THE process of comminution by grinding is properly classified as an art, rather than as a science. Like most other operations concerned in ore dressing, or in the treat-ment of nonmetallic minerals, the mathe-matical relationships of rock breaking are still obscure, and much disputed. If some basic formula exists, comparable for in-stance to E = RI in electricity, it has not yet been placed in common use. The absence of such a comprehensive mathe-matical background undoubtedly is the cause of many inefficient designs and installations, as well as of much poorly oriented experimental work. On the other hand, the mathematical immaturity of the process constitutes an opportunity for a real contribution on the part of those who enjoy mental pioneering. Some of the statements made in any such exploratory work may be little more than opinions, and it is to be expected that some will later be proved untrue; but such an evolutionary development is necessary if we are ever to arrive at the fundamental laws, the discovery of which can change the empirical art into a mathematically exact science. The most significant principle of com-minution that we possess is probably Rittinger&apos;s law, which states that the work done in crushing or grinding is proportional to the area of the new surface produced. There is an alternative theory, known as Kick&apos;s law, which formerly was preferred to Rittinger&apos;s but which now is rather dis-credited. According to Kick, the work done in comminution is proportional to the volume, or weight, of the pieces broken, or to the cube of their diameters, while accord-ing to Rittinger it is proportional to the square of the diameters.

QUESTIONS raised during earlier investigations of the preferred orientation in titanium1 and zirco-nium sheet led to the examination of the rolling and annealing textures of beryllium and hafnium sheet. Since the c/a ratios are 1.568 and 1.584, less than that of ideal close packing, 1.633, it would be expected that the preferred orientations would be similar to those exhibited by zirconium and titanium. This was found to be true. However, in several regards the orientations observed for beryllium differed from those reported by Smigels-kas and Barrett4 and so are given here. The okientations for hafnium are presented since only the cold-rolling texture has been reported in the unclassified literature. The pole figures were determined by transmission using an X-ray spectrogoniometer with copper Ka radiation and the automatic pole-figure recorder designed by Geisler described previously.6 The intensity units in the pole figures in this case are only arbitrary since calibration against a random sample of the same material was not considered necessary for the original purpose of the examination. The beryllium sheet, cold-rolled from 0.036 in. to 0.006 in., a reduction of about 84 pct, exhibited a split texture with the [1010] direction in the rolling direction as shown in Fig. 1. The same specimen annealed in vacuo for 1 hr at 1000°C showed no change in orientation. These textures

In any structural transfortnation which is driven by surface tension, the geometric variable of fimdamental importance is the local value of the mean surface curvatuve. Acting through the suvface free energy, this quantity determines the magtnitude of both the pressure and the chemical potential that develops in the neighborhood of an arbitrarily curved surface. A metallographic method which would permit the quaniitatiue estinzation of this propevty is of fundarnerztal irztevest to studies of such processes. In the present paper, it is shoun that the average value of the mean surface curvature in a structuve can be estimated from two simple counting measuretnents made upon a vepresentative metallograpIzic section. No simplifyirlg geonzetric assurmptions are necessary to this deviuation. It is further shoum that the result may be applied to parts of interfaces, e.g., interparticle welds in sintering, or the edge of growing platelets in a phase transformation, without loss of validity. In virtually every metallurgical process in which an interface is important, the local value of the mean surface curvature is the key structural property. This is true because the mean curvature determines the chemical potential of material adjacent to the surface, as well as the state of stress of that material. The theoretical description of such broadly different processes as sintering,1,2 grain growth,3 particle redistrib~tion4,5 and growth of Widmanstatten platelets8 all have as a central geometric variable the "local value of the mean surface curvature". The tools of quantitative metallography currently available permit the statistically precise estimation of the total or extensive geometric properties of a structure: the volume fraction of any distinguishable part:-&apos; the total extent of any observable interface,10,11 and the total length of some three-dimensional lineal feature:&apos; and, if some simplifying assumptions about particle shape are allowed, the total number of particles.&apos;2"3 The size of particles in a structure, specified by a distribution or a mean value, can only be estimated if the particles are all the same shape, and if this shape is relatively simple.14-16 The relationships involved in converting measurements made upon a metallographic section to properties of the three dimensional structure of which the section is a sample are now well-established, and their utility amply demonstrated. In the present paper, another fundamental relationship is added to the tools of quantitative metallography. This relationship is fundamental in the sense that its validity depends only upon the observation of an appropriately representative sample of the structure, and not upon the geometric nature of the structure itself. It involves a new sampling procedure, devised by Rhines, called the "area tangent count". It will first be shown that the "area tangent count" is simply related to the average value of the curvature of particle outline in the two-dimensional section upon which the count is performed. The average curvature of such a section will then be shown to be proportional to the average value of the Mean surface curVature of the structure of which the section is a sample. The final result of the development is thus a relationship which permits the evaluation of the average value of the mean surface curvature from relatively simple counting measurements made upon a representative metallographic section. The result is quite independent of the geometric or even topological nature of the interface being studied. QUANTITATNE EVALUATION OF AVERAGE CURVATURE IN TWO DIMENSIONS The Area Tangent Count. Consider a two-dimen-sional structure composed of two different kinds of distinguishable areas (phases), Fig. l(a). If the system is composed of more than two "phases", it is possible to focus attention upon one phase, and consider the remaining structure as the other phase. The reference phase is separated from the rest of the structure by a set of linear boundaries, of arbitrary shapes and sizes. These boundaries may be totally smooth and continuous, or piecewise smooth and continuous. An element of such a boundary, dA, is shown in Fig. l(b). One may define the "angle subtended" by this arbitrarily curved element of arc, dO, as the angle between the normals erected at its ends, Fig. l(c). Now consider the following experiment. Let a line be swept across this two-dimensional structure, and let the number of tangents that this line forms with elements of arc in the structure be counted. This procedure constitutes the Rhines Area Tangent Count. Suppose that this experiment were repeated a large number of times, with the direction of traverse of the sweeping lines distributed uniformly over the semicircle of orientation.&apos; Those test lines which ap- proach from orientations which lie in the range O to O + dO form a tangent with dA; those outside this range do not, see Fig. l(c). Since the lines are presumed to be uniformly distributed in direction of traverse, the fraction of test lines which form a tangent with dA is the fraction of the circumference of a semicircle which is contained in the orientation range, dO; i.e., vdO/nr or dB/n. If the number of test lines is N, the number forming tangents with dA is N(d0/n). Since each test line sweeps the entire area of the sample, the total area traversed by all N test lines is NL2. The success of European experiments in melting iron and steel with gases resulting from the decomposition of steam by incandescent coal, has encouraged me to design, with the valuable assistance of Mr. George S. Dwight, a plan for producing and burning these gases in a manner economical and efficient for metallurgical purposes. That this direction is the right one, is demonstrated by the repeated efforts made in practice, to introduce as much steam as possible with the blast in ordinary producers, thus displacing a certain amount of nitrogen. Such attempts, however, must always be limited by the cooling influence of the steam. ThE useful properties of k6-Alfenol and the thermenol alloys (summarized by J. E. Nachman and W. J. Buehler&apos;) have encouraged research into those alloys which, having compositions near 25 at. pct Al, 75 at. pct Fe, undergo an ordering transformation between 500° and 550°C. The equilibrium diagram of the iron-rich iron-aluminum alloys was first determined by Bradley and Jay.2,3 They distinguished three structures: the disordered, which is bcc; FeAl, which is simple cubic with one Fe atom and one Al atom per lattice site; and Fe3Al, which is fcc with three Fe atoms and one Al atom per lattice site. This last structure may be conceived as eight body-centered cubes with Al atoms at the centers of alternate ones, so that Al atoms have only Fe as first and second nearest neighbors. Later, Osawa and Murata4 determined the boundaries of the different superlattice regions in the iron-rich Fe-Al solid solution by dilatometric and X-ray methods. Two of the six phases, which they found between 0 and 50 at. pct Al, were never identified by other workers. A. Taylor and R. M. ones,&apos; concurrently with and independently of this research, redetermined this diagram by measuring lattice parameters at temperature. Further reference will be made to their results. EQUILIBRIUM DIAGRAM A) Experimental Procedure—The alloys were prepared from NRC gas-free iron (99.9 pct Fe) and 99.99 pct Al. They were melted in alumina&apos; crucubles under vacuum in an induction furnace. If the ingots were unsound or showed more than a 3 pct weight loss, they were rejected. The ingots were homogenized at 1100°C for 24 hr before hot-rolling at 700" to 900°C from 1 in. to 0.25 in. thick. It is interesting to note that alloys containing more than 28 at. pct Al were able to take an 80 pct reduction of area in the ordered FeAl region. The dilatometer specimens and specimens for chemical analysis were cut from these plates. A Leitz dilatometer was used to measure the coefficient of linear expansion as a function of temperature. The specimens were slowly cooled from 900" to 300°C where they were annealed for 10 hr before slowly cooling to room temperature. The expansion was recorded photographically as the alloys were heated and cooled at 1.5oC per min between 100" and 1000°C. The magnetic measurements determining the Curie points were performed on the dilatometer specimens in the dilatometer, by using direct current in the furnace windings both to heat the specimen at 1.5°C per min and to serve as the primary coil. The regular specimen holder was replaced by a thin alundum tube on which was wound, as a secondary, a closely spaced coil of fine copper wire. A reversal of current in the furnace windings produced, in the secondary, an emf which was proportional to the induction in the specimen, and which could be detected on a galvanometer. In this way, it was possible to determine the Curie points of alloys to within * 5°C. B) Results and Discussion—The coefficients of linear expansion, as obtained from the dilatometer curves, are plotted as a function of temperature and composition in Fig. 1. Since in many cases the heating and cooling curves were superimposed, it was decided to measure slopes of heating curves only. Definite high peaks, due to the transformations, were observed on each curve between 400" and 520°C, and, for alloys containing more than 23 at. pct Al, a second set of smaller peaks at temperatures above 660°C. The sharpness of the peaks indicates that ordering to Fe3Al is a first-order reaction. The compositions and the temperatures of these peaks are listed in Table I. THE method of measurement of surface on quartz particles was given in a previous paper.1 With such a method the relation of surface produced in crushing quartz can be compared to the work in crushing without recourse to sieve sizing or microscopic measurement. In crushing, the work input must be known with a fair degree of accuracy. With crushers, rolls, ball mills, and similar apparatus the measurement of the work in crushing is subject to possible errors, due to friction in .the transmission as well as in the machine itself. Moreover, relatively large quantities of material must be crushed to get an average figure. In the selection of a method of crushing, simplicity in design and operation was desired and this was most readily obtained by the use of a free-falling body. A description of the apparatus embodying this principle is given herewith. THE CRUSHING DEVICE The apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1 and in cross-section in Fig. 2. The material to be crushed is placed in the crushing chamber C in the steel mortar M. The mortar is 3 in. dia. by 3 in. high. Two mortars are used, one having a crushing chamber 1-in. dia. by 1/2 in. deep, with a capacity of 4 g. of quartz, the other having a crushing chamber 1 ½ in. dia. by 3/4 in. deep, with a capacity of 12 g. of quartz. The position of the mortar is adjusted by means of three centering screws A. The steel plunger P, which fits neatly into the chamber, is placed on top of the material to be crushed. Plungers of different lengths were tried and as they were found to give practically identical results the length adopted was equal to the depth of the chamber.

Difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for overage mobile mine equipment at the Gay mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians or computer men. The Gay mine is located 17 mi east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Co. and the FMC Corp. with 1.5-2.0 million tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24-cu yd scrapers; twenty-one 30-50-ton end-dump trucks; four 3%-4%- cu yd shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units.
