Research has shown that an ergonomics process that identifies risk factors, devises solutions to reduce musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), and evaluates the effectiveness of the solutions can lower worker exposure to risk factors and MSDs and improve productivity. A review of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury/illness database indicated that 46% of illnesses in 2004 were associated with repetitive trauma and 35% of nonfatal lost days involved material handling during 2001? 2004. Even though these statistics show that MSDs significantly contribute to occupational illnesses and injuries in the U.S. mining industry, few mining companies have implemented an ergonomics process. Despite the many unique challenges in the mining environment, three mining companies partnered with the MSD Prevention Team at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory to demonstrate that an ergonomics process could be systematically implemented and effectively integrated with existing safety and health programs. Because these three mining companies were very different in organization, culture, and size, the ergonomics processes had to be modified to meet the needs of each company. A description of how these three companies applied ergonomics and the tools and training used to implement their processes is given. Prior to discussing the case studies, general information on the elements of an ergonomics process is provided.

Spontaneous combustion of coal has been studied by laboratory techniques using an apparatus in a small-scale laboratory testing. Coal?s inherent characteristics can be measured using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Crossing Point Temperature (CPT) methods. The DTA curve obtained after testing is compared with actual inherent moisture and its effect on spontaneous combustion has been investigated. It has been found that the Wits-Ehac Index increases as the inherent moisture of the sample increases. Therefore it can be deduced that liability to spontaneous combustion increases with increased inherent moisture. In addition, volatiles have a catalytic affect on self heating immediately after the inherent moisture is reduced. This is identified as stage two in the thermogram. The inherent moisture has a cooling effect during the initial stages of testing and is visible in the DTA thermogram. In addition, while an increase in carbon content means an increase in Wits-Ehac Index value, an ash content decreases the likelihood of on spontaneous combustion. "Mining environments, whether open-pit or underground, pose difficult conditions for any sensor system. However, the ever-increasing need for automation requires the application and use of sensor systems in order to gather relevant information required for process automation. Ultra-Wideband radio (UWB) is a robust technology well-suited for underground applications. These applications include positioning and communication. This paper introduces UWB and presents results from measurement campaigns in harsh environments. Using filtering and sensor fusion precise and robust positioning can be achieved even in confinements of underground mining environments. INTRODUCTION Indoor positioning systems (IPS) are gaining ever more importance. Especially in light of ongoing efforts to reach the goals of what was coined as Industry 4.0 by the German government, the development of IPS is inevitable. According to a recent report about the “Global Indoor Location Market Outlook 2019” a growth from $ 597 million in 2014 to $ 3961.8 million by 2019 is expected [1]. Hence, there is also an economic incentive to pursue this topic. The mining industry is profiting from this development as well, since IPS are the basis for the automation of especially mobile mining equipment. Ideally, indoor positioning systems offer to position the equipment continuously and, what’s more, even in real-time [2]. Different approaches are available for IPS. The difference of these systems lie in terms of accuracy, cost, precision, technology, scalability, robustness and security. [3] At the Institute of Advanced Mining Technologies (AMT) of RWTH Aachen University, research suggests that one of the more auspicious approaches for IPS in the mining sector is the employment of ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology. Because of this, there has been ongoing research into the best way to introduce UWB technology for the application in underground environments. The research started with an indoor positioning application, which only consisted of the UWB system. In the course of this, different algorithms were developed to enhance the system’s performance for the use in the mining industry. This led to the idea of sensor fusion in which the information of the UWB system are combined with infrastructure-independent technologies like inertial navigation systems (INS) and image-based technologies."

"This paper will initially outline the specific types of copper castings used in blast furnace iron production. Tuyeres, tuyere coolers and stack cooling plates will be discussed in some depth, with particular reference to their dimensional configuration and purpose.Following this, the failure of such cooling members will be discussed, with special focus on tuyeres. Tuyeres are the most common casting which often requires replacement. Reasons for failure and its effect on operations will also be included.The latter sections of the paper will deal with the strict specifications demanded by ironmakers regarding copper castings. The justification for such rigid demands will be explained through the material presented earlier in the paper.IntroductionThe modern 5000-tpd blast furnace, worth millions, is a large capital investment to be sitting idle. Consequently, ironmakers strive to minimize the loss in iron production and revenue from furnace downtime. Two major causes of downtime are furnace relines and shutdowns to replace damaged tuyeresor tuyere coolers. Copper ancillaries are important items in the production of iron. They are consumable items, therefore they contribute to the campaign life or to the downtime in blast furnace production.Several combinations of lining and cooling systems have been used with varying degrees of success. Blast furnace refractories have evolved from ceramic to carbonaceous linings. The Russians and Japanese have successfully introduced stave-cooled furnaces that may have several forms, such as evaporative cooling. Stelco has two furnaces which use the Russian-designed cast iron system. However, this paper will be confined to the use of copper cast cooling members in a conventional internally cooled furnace.Figure 1 is a schematic cross section of the E blast furnace. The three major sections of a blast furnace-the stack, bosh and hearth-are identified. Further, the locations of the various copper members are indicated. This furnace produces an average of 5300 tons of hot metal per day."

The McDonald gold project and two satellite gold deposits near Lincoln, MT were discovered in the early 1990s. They contain at least 307.9 t (9.9 million oz) of gold and 933 t (30 million oz)of silver. The McDonald gold deposit alone contains 223.9 t (7.2 million oz) of gold reserves that can be open-pit mined and processed by cyanide heap leaching at a projected cash operating cost of $6.10/g ($190/oz). The deposit is predominantly oxidized with no chance of acid production. It can be mined, operated and reclaimed with minimal permanent environmental disturbance other than the creation of an open-pit filled with a fresh-water lake that would support trout.

"The development and characterization of sulphide standards containing as many as seven precious metals has increased the efficiency and comprehensiveness of micro-analyses for deportment studies using laser ablation microprobe inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LAM-ICPMS). Because trace precious metals occurring in solid solution or as sub-micron inclusions in sulphides, arsenides, and sulpharsenides are often heterogeneously distributed, a significantly large number of analyses are required. Using well-prepared samples it is possible for up to 120 analyses per day, far more than by other comparable methods. Examples will be discussed from projects focused on the deportment of Au and the platinum group elements (PGE).INTRODUCTIONBecause gold and the platinum-group elements (PGE) occur as both discrete minerals and in trace quantities in a variety of minerals (mostly sulphide, arsenide, and sulpharsenide minerals), specialized trace analytical methods were developed and applied to determine the deportment of precious metals in ore deposits, requiring sensitivities ranging originally from about hundreds to presently tens of ppb for individual precious metal or less.In mineralogical studies, micro-analytical techniques such as the electron microprobe were first applied to obtain analyses for major elements in about 1959-60, but as the instrumentation improved early attempts for PGE in potential carrier minerals indicated that reasonable levels of detection (LOD) were of the order of 300-400 ppm, depending on analytical conditions, X-ray spectral lines, and mineral matrix (e.g., Cabri and Laflamme, 1976). Eventually, the lowest detection levels by electron probe micro-analyses (EPMA) obtained for some PGE were of the order of 10s of ppm using high accelerating voltage and current for extended measuring time on peak and background (Gervilla, Cabri, Kojonen, Oberthür, Weiser, Johanson, Sie, Campbell, Teesdale and Laflamme, 2004)."

The small party of mining men who formed the original Mount Morgan Syndicate in 1882, commenced operations on the top of the mountain with what were practically nothing more than small hillside quarries, It was not until 1891 that underground stoping began, and open-cut mining therefore commenced with the commencement of operations. This hillside quarrying, however, seems to have been quite haphazard and unsystematic ; there is no trace or sign of any properly devised mining scheme. This can be seen plainly enough from an examination of old mine plans; for in less than five years after stoping was; adopted, the open-cut was down into the stoped-out ground. The following table, prepared from these old plans, shows the downward trend of the excavation in the past fiftyseven years:-

L?exploitation rentable des gisements de type filonien constitue un problème important dans le contexte actuel de l?industrie minière québécoise. Les études effectuées depuis 1994 ont indiqué, que la technologie d?abattage mécanique utilisant l?outil hydraulique appelé « éclateur radial-axial » constitue une alternative intéressante par rapport aux méthodes conventionnelles par le forage et sautage. Les essais du prototype de l?éclateur ont prouvé qu?il est en mesure d?abattre les roches dures dans un environnement minier, mais sa performance dans les termes de masse du roc abattu dans une unité de temps a soulevé certaines doutes. Pour cette raison, une étude de préfaisabilité de l?éclatage en tant qu?une technologie d?excavation souterraine a été réalisée. Cet article présente quelques résultats des travaux effectués dans le cadre du contrat octroyé à l?Université Laval par le Ministère des ressources naturelles du Québec. Leur objectif principal consistait à comparer, pour les conditions des gisements filoniens, la productivité et les coûts des méthodes d?exploitation souterraine utilisant l?éclatage par rapport à celles conventionnelles. Deux variantes proposées de cette méthode ont été comparées avec la méthode conventionnelle sur le plan du coût (par tonne de minerai) et de la teneur de coupure de minerai d'or. Les études ont démontré que l?application de l?éclatage représente un potentiel de réduire ce coût, surtout dans les situations où l?abattage sélectif pourrait avoir lieu. Pour le cas de base on a trouvé, qu?il serait possible de réduire la teneur de coupure par la marge d?environ 16 ? 26%. Toutefois, les études de sensibilité ont démontré, que le coût dépend de façon important de la productivité d?éclatage, qui, pour sa part, varie beaucoup en fonction de paramètres du massif rocheux devant être abattu.

Methods for the direct spectrochemical determination of impurities at the parts-per-million level in tungsten metal and oxide are presented. Several published procedures were investigated and numerous modifications were made in establishing procedures with improved precision and extended lower levels of determinability. Details of standards preparation are presented, experimental work is described, and three preferred methods are described in detail. A germanium carrier-distillation procedure is applicable to the determination of 13 elements in tungsten powder; a silver chloride carrier-distillation procedure provides for the determination of 24 elements in tungstic oxide, and a sustaining ac arc method is applicable to 26 elements in tungstic oxide. The choice of methods to be used depends upon sample form, elements and concentrations to be determined, and the precision and accuracy required. The investigations reported here were undertaken to develop direct spec-trochemical methods with increased accuracy and precision to determine impurities in high-purity tungsten and tungstic oxide, to define the lower concentration levels of detectability and measurement for the common impurities in tungsten by direct spectrographic means, and to present the details of the developed or modified methods that have proved applicable.

Previous laboratory and field experimentation has demonstrated the effect of several variables on drilling rate.1-5 These results have been incorporated into optimization theories6-" for the purpose of reducing drilling cost. Minimum-cost drilling theories rely on a combination of historical data and empirical prediction techniques for selecting optimum bit weight and rotary speed. Past solutions have required extensive use of computing equipment because of both the complexity of the mathematical formulations and the large number of parameters involved. Field attempts to apply these computed results have frequently failed because of the uncertainty of input data requirements. Humble has developed an on-site computer system to control bit weight and rotary speed and thereby implement the concepts of minimum-cost drilling. This system can (1) perform short interval drilling rate tests for formation evaluation, (2) use the results of these tests as input information to solve minimum-cost drilling formulas, and (3) control bit weight and rotary speed in accordance with these computed solutions. The purpose of this paper is to describe the computer control system and present results of initial field testing. Theoretical Considerations Minimum-cost drilling (MCD) requires a quantitative evaluation of the variables involved. Several forms of a basic mathematical model have been sug-gested.'?,' "he relationships reported here form the basis for the solution programmed in this work. Four equations are used, expressing drilling rate, bit bearing wear, bit tooth wear, and cost. A solution for minimum-cost drilling assuming constant bit weight and rotary speed over the entire bit life has been programmed for use in computing MCD schedules. This solution is subject to certain limiting assumptions such as those discussed by Graham et a1.I2: 1. Drilling cost is the summation of bit cost, rotating cost, connection cost and hoisting cost. 2. Diamond bits are excluded. 3. Bit life is limited by either bearing failure or tooth wear, or by a combination of operational factors that make it cheaper to pull an incompletely consumed bit. 4. Circulating hydraulics are adequate and do not limit drilling rate. 5. Bit weight considerations exclude hole deviation. 6. Drilling rate is a function of only bit weight, rotary speed, and degree of tooth dullness; that is, the effects of pressure, lithology, fluid properties hydraulics and drill string dynamics are ignored. The computer program introduced in this paper is based on design guidelines developed for selection of support systems used in mine roadways. The support types considered include rock bolts as well as rigid and yieldable steel arches. Using the computer program, the design engineer can select the type, pattern and specifications of the support systems suitable for various roof conditions. The concepts utilized, assumptions made, support selection criteria and description of the computer program, developed for the PC, are included.

A liquid metal flow generated by a magnetic field whose traveling direction is periodically reversed, the Reversed Traveling Magnetic Field (R-TMF) is studied. The modulation frequency ranges from 0 to 6 Hz. Ultrasonic Doppler velocimetry probes the generated fluid flow. Depending on the modulation frequency, a number of characteristic flow features are exhibited. A transition frequency (approximately 4 Hz) exists, above which the flow is no longer sensitive to the force modulation. Below this transition point, the amplitude of the velocity oscillation increases, and then below fm = 0.05 Hz, it saturates around a value close to that observed without any modulation. A theoretical model to obtain an analytical solution of electromagnetic force and to predict flow motion is developed, which is fairly in agreement with the experiments.

A mineral grain finder is described which is easily constructed to fit onto the stage of a standard reflected light ore microscope.The device is most useful in relocating particular grains or mineral associations on 30 mm diameter polished sections. The use of the grain finder in the teaching of ore microscopy is outlined.

Approximately 75 percentage of the earth's land surface is comprised of shale or shale-like materials. Shale itself is composed of the residue from an almost infinite variety of weathered parent materials which have undergone deformations ranging from intense to negligible. Under standard test procedures, shales exhibit a very wide range of physical properties particularly if the test specimen is subjected to a change in moisture content, when the original test values may vary from 0 to 100 percentage. It is this wide variation in physical property values compounded by its ubiquitous presence that makes shale such a problem material to engineers. In reviewing the literature relating to shale, it is evident that the "problem" has been approached from many directions. In order to understand why shales behave as they do, investigators have sought mineralogical, geological, chemical, electrical, and physical answers. Each study yields valuable academic information, but few contribute much of value to the engineer in the field. Many valid relationships between shale strength or competency and clay type, clay content, organic content, water content, grain size, cementation, density, porosity, etc, have been established. Yet it is very difficult to extend these understandings to the in situ condition with results that can be used by the field engineer. One major reason earlier work has not produced better information lies in the ambiguity of the definition of shale. It is apparent that no one laboratory parameter can be successfully used to provide sufficient engineering information to properly describe in situ conditions. For example; shale with swelling clays will produce low strength values provided: the swelling clay is in sufficient quantity, the clay is dispersed throughout the medium involved, and there is a low value of cementation. Shales with high unconfined compressive strengths have been found with very low shear strengths. Sandy shales often provide as many ground control problems as clay shales. Shales of similar nature may provide good roof conditions in one part of a mine yet in another part of the same mine the apparently identical shale may cause substantial problems. A clear need exists to classify shale in a manner which will enable the engineer to better predict the strength and durability of shale-like materials. Studies at the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR) have focused on finding parameters which influence durability and competency, while being discretely discernible through uncomplicated testing. Initial research concentrated on distinguishing shale8 on the basis of standard physical tests such as: unconfirmed compression, triaxial shear, and slake durability. As results accumulated, however, it became evident that moisture content played a much greater role in determining competency than had been recognized previously. As a result the focus of the research turned to developing tests which would evaluate the influence of moisture on shale behavior. The above work then became a foundation for a second phase of investigation in which a suite of standardized tests were developed to provide a classification procedure. From this study five tests were identified as being critical: Moisture Activity, Atterberg Limits, Submersion, Unconfined Compression, and Shore Hardness.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1979, 12 companies operated 32 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 64% of production. Washington, Oregon and Montana accounted for 32% of the total production; Gulf Coast States 20%; other Northern States 32%; and other Southern States 16%. Based on published producer prices output of primary metal in 1979 was valued at over $6 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Of aluminum consuming industries in 1979, building accounted for about 24%; packaging 23%; transportation 22%; electrical 11%; consumer durables 8%; and other uses, 12%.

"The first known use of activated carbon dates back to the Ancient Egyptians who utilized its adsorbent properties for purifying oils and medicinal purposes. Centuries later, the early ocean going vessels stored drinking water in wooden barrels, the inside of which had been charred. (However, by modern definition the carbon used in these applications could not truly be described as activated.) By the early 19th century, both wood and bone charcoal was in large scale use for the decolorization and purification of cane sugar.However, it was not until the beginning of the First World War that the potential of activated carbon was really capitalized upon. The advent of gas warfare necessitated the development of suitable respiratory devices for personnel protection. Granular activated carbon was used to this end as, indeed, it still is today.By the late 1930's there was considerable industrial scale use of carbon for both gaseous and liquid phase application and new manufacturing processes had been developed to satisfy the needs of industry. During the 1939-1945 war, a further significant development took place - the production of more sophisticated chemically impregnated carbon for the removal of both war and nerve gases."

"Molybdenum mineralization at Boss Mountain is hosted by the Triassic Takomkane quartz monzodiorite batholith and is associated with a Cretaceous monzogranite stock. Ore has been mined from a sheeted vein system that describes a partial annulus centred upon the apical region of the stock and from subvertical breccia pipes that emanate from the stock. Molybdenite precipitation is coincident with CO2 effervescence from a dilute (1.9 mole o/o NaC/ equivalent) hydrothermal fluid over a temperature range of 250°C to 370°C at a pressure of approximately 350 bars, interpreted to be greater than or equal to the lithostatic load and equivalent to a depth of 1.3 km or less.IntroductionThe chemical and thermal constraints on molybdenum transport and deposition to form molybdenum ore deposits are not well understood. To address this problem, the Boss Mountain mine in central British Columbia, operated by Noranda Mines Ltd., was chosen as a well-described (Soregaroli and Nelson, 1976), relatively small and simple example of a Cordilleran Mo~ deposit. It is situated on the northeast slope of Takornkane Mountain, 10 km west of the community of Hendrix Lake (N.T.S. 93A/2W; latitude 52°06'N, longtitude 120°56'W). Access is from 100 Mile House by nearly 90 km of road, the first 50 km of which are paved."
