The dramatic rescue of nine Pennsylvania coal miners trapped nearly 90 m (300 ft) underground for77 hours probably would not have happened without the high technology equipment and improved mine rescue training techniques available today. By now, most everyone has heard the story of the accident that occurred at the Quecreek Mine near Somerset, PA. At about 9 pm on Wednesday, July 24, the miners were drilling coal in the room-and-pillar mine. Their drilling accidentally punched through to the adjacent, abandoned Saxman Mine. Old mine maps of the Saxman Mine led Black Wolf Coal, Quecreek’s owners, to believe they were between 60 to 90 m (200 to 300 m) away from the abandoned mine. Those maps proved to be inaccurate.

The Bureau of Mines made experimental determinations of the heats of formation of forsterite and chrysotile at 298.15° K. The heat capacities of two polymorphs of serpentine, chrysotile and antigorite, were measured over the temperature range from 50° to 298° K and the entropies at 298.15° K were evaluated. The heat content of antigorite above 298.15° K was measured to 850° K. These thermochemical data were combined with other pertinent data to give heat and free energy of formation values at high temperatures. Free energy values are given for the reaction, forsterite + water = brucite + serpentine at different temperatures and pressures.

Seals and build-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are two main underground structures to isolate an area from the active working zones with different purposes. While seals are used to prevent methane gas that seeps from coal seams and blast pressures from a possible detonation of the contained gas, RAs are used to provide a safe haven for miners who are unable to escape their working locations after an accident like an explosion or fire. The recommended BIP RA designs can be similar to seals constructed with steel-reinforced concrete. Both seal and BIP RA are constructed in different locations of the mines for a period of time, exposed to a certain convergence due to stress redistribution which can change their responses during an explosion. In this study, a steel-reinforced concrete wall to be used in such applications is simulated to examine the structural performance during an explosion for a coal mine model with different strata conditions using dynamic analysis by a 3D distinct element method (DEM) code. The main purpose of this study is to reveal any possible effects or trends on the wall deformation with changes in strata conditions by implementing different combinations of roof, seam, and floor material properties. The model is calibrated by the experiment conducted on a steel-reinforced concrete wall by the NIOSH researchers in the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine. The results show that strong adjacent rock and coal units are the least favorable condition for the survival of the wall subjected to a simulated explosion pressure. The results indicate that changes in the roof and seam conditions can have dramatic effects on the deformation characteristics of the wall when compared to the floor conditions. The results of this study might be enlightening for future BIP RA and seal applications.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree A study into the stability of strike gullies at TauTona mine was to be carried out. In reaching the conclusions to follow, a three-stage process was followed. ?A literature study as well as discussions with management and workers alike to gain their inputs and perceptions. ?An ESH Department survey into the history of transgression from proper mine standard in TauTona strike gullies. Unfortunately records were found to be scarce and obscure and the importance of better inter-departmental recordings cannot be stressed enough. ?An underground survey of 11 pre-selected gullies distributed in both the UCL and LCL reef horizons. This stage is to carry the greatest weight in the points to be brought forward in this report. The process highlighted and ranked the following areas as the most critical role players in the deterioration of strike gullies: ?Poor blasting practice ?Sub-standard siding depth and lead-lags ?Split sets ?Off line gully development ?Adverse geological features. The following has been suggested to the mine to help reduce strike gully instability. ?Where possible, maintain lead-lags below 7 m?else increase the siding depth to suit. ?Decrease the gully width standard to 1.2 m (especially in ?high risk areas?). ?Discourage drillers from drilling side holes in gully face blast pattern. This will allow for time in which tendon support can be kept up to date. ?Ensure split sets are installed 1 m behind the gully face so as to prevent opening up of fractures. ?Utilize the centre split set in the 1:2:1 pattern to maintain the proper gully line. ?When adverse conditions prevail, it is necessary to apply a special support plan not only to the panel face, but also (just as importantly) to the gully as well. Shotcreting of the gully hanging is a suitable long-term consideration for providing the additional a real coverage needed. Much has been said and written about the need to reduce South Africa's dependence on gold. To compensate for the decline in the country's foreign-exchange earnings resulting from the phasing out of gold, which must inevitably occur at some future date, a far higher priority will have to be placed on the mining, beneficiation, and export of the 59 other mineral commodities produced in South Africa. The basic strategy of the mining and metallurgical industries should be to move from the traditional approach of establishing a resource base to the establishment of a market base; to turn from production orientation to market orientation; and to rely less on exploration and economies of scale and more on process innovation and product development. The enthusiasm, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment of the leaders in the mining and metallurgical industry will clearly be of decisive importance in the establishment of new industries for the beneficiation and export of added-value mineral-based products. The State can make a significant contribution by the provision of a welldeveloped and efficient infrastructure, including rail and harbour facilities, communications and health services, roads, and of electricity and water supplies. In our search for a new development strategy for the beneficiation and export of South Africa's minerals, we need to recognize that no one nation has all the mineralresources that it needs. Commercial and strategic manipulation of mineral supplies should no longer be tolerated. The future of the human species lies in international cooperation and in a greater understanding of the limitations of the world we live in.

At Ohio Creek, 3 km northwest of the Thames bonanza goldfield, porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation is hosted in a dacite porphyry associated with porphyry intrusion breccias and overlying andesites and dacites. The geological setting is a Jurassic greywacke basement overlain by Late Miocene andesite-dacite volcanics which are extensively altered to propylitic and argillic assemblages. Diamond drilling at Ohio Creek in 1978-1981 by Amoco Minerals intersected low grade Cu-Au (0.12-0.20% C~ 0.23-0.4 glt Au) mineralisation An advanced argillic 'alteration cap containing quartz-alunite¦dickite or pyrophyllite-dickite¦diaspore is centred on the adjacent Lookout Rocks and has potential for high sulfidation Au-Cu mineralisation. There is a zonation from potassic K-feldspar-magnetitealteration at depth in the dacite porphyry, through an overlying phyllic quartzsericite- pyrite zone which is overprinted by pyrophyllite in the overlying advanced argillic cap. Early quartz stockwork veinlets associated with the potassic alteration contain fluid inclusions that trapped a highly saline (50-80 wt% NaCI equiv) fluid at high temperatures (450 to >600¦C) indicative of a magmatic fluid. Some chalcopyrite is associated with slightly later quartz-magnetite veinlets, but the bulk of the copper occurs as disseminated chalcopyrite associated with the phyllic alteration. The potassic alteration is surrounded and overprinted by propylitic chlorite¦epidote alteration. Late polymetallic sulfide-quartz-anhydrite veins occur within and around the margins of the porphyry system as in the Kaiser Reef. Fluid inclusions associated with these late veins were formed at temperatures of about 250-320¦C from low salinity (1-3 wfl~ NaCI equiv) fluids. The spatial association between porphyry eu-Au mineralisation, advanced argillic alteration and polymetallic sulfide veins suggests that they are genetically part of the same hydrothennal system. This is consistent with reconnaissanceK-Ar dates of 11.6-10.7 Ma for the intrusive porphyry at Ohio Creek, alunite in the advanced argillic alteration zone at Lookout Rocks and sericite selvedges from the Waiotahi gold-quartz veins at Thames.

What follows is a brief introduction to the Atara Corporation and the fundamentals of how an Atara ""cannon"" mixer operates. The main body of the paper is concerned with the results of a study to evaluate the cannon mixer for a gold cvanide leach application. A brief summary of research and testing for other metallurgical applications is also presented.1. 1 THE COMPANYThe Atara Corporation is a privately owned Canadian company, headquarted in Dorval, Quebec. Its subsidiary, Atara Incorporated, located in Paramus, New Jersey services the municipal wastewater treatment market in the United States. Dorval focuses on industrial mixing applications in Canada and the US. The Atara Corporation provides design, engineering and specifications of agitators for mineral land other) processing applications. Fabrication of mixers is pursued in either Canada or the US, depending on the ultimate destination.Although Atara and its unique static in-tank mixer are relative newcomers to the mining industry, the cannon mixer has demonstrated its value over the past 20 years in municipal wastewater treatment services. In the past four years the Atara unit has been developed for industrial applications; the bulk of the development work has been for metallurgical applications. To-date the cannon mixer has been evaluated for mixing slurries in the following applications: nickel-copper concentrate storage, copper concentrate storage, coal slurry storage, gold cyanide leaching, uranium acid leaching, silver leaching and zinc acid leaching. "The rare earths industry started in Austria in 1887 by Carl Auer von Welsbach (1858-1929) Professor of Chemistry at the University of Vienna. The process was based on monazite sand transported from Brazil as shipping ballast free of charge. This made possible producing thorium, cerium, and other rare earths at a low cost, thus permitting the growth of the industry. However, once the Brazilian authorities realized the strategic importance of the sand, shipping was stopped. Brazil then started its own processing of the sand in 1949. The background for Auer’s work, the role of Robert Bunsen in Heidelberg, and the invention of the spectroscope will be presented. INTRODUCTIONHeidelberg on the Neckar (Figure 1) was the meeting place for chemistry students from all over Europe in the nineteenth century. Her university founded in 1386 had already a famous professor of chemistry and medecine in the Faculty of Medicine by the name Leopold Gmelin whose three - volume Handbuch der theoretischen Chemie appeared in 1817-1819, that became later a multi-volume monumental work. As successor to Gmelin came Robert Bunsen (Figure 2) in 1852 who made this university town the Mecca of chemistry students. One of his students, the English Henry Roscoe (1833-1915) who became later a distinguished professor in Manchester, described him as follows: ""As an investigator he was great, as a teacher he was greater, as a man and a friend he was greatest""."

This Bureau of Mines report presents a computer code that has been developed for describing and testing the statistical distribution of general continuous data sets. The statistical distributions used include the normal, lognormal, exponential, chi square, gamma, and uniform. Histograms for observed and expected values are plotted for each distribution. An example using geologic data obtained from a study of the geometric properties of natural fractures in oil shale rock illustrates the use of the computer program, GDIST.

"A statistically designed benchmark mill survey was carried out in July 2005 at the Kidd Creek Concentrator, D Division circuit, which processes Ni/Cu ore from the Montcalm deposit. A structured statistical survey approach was followed, together with defined quality controls, which would assign a 95 percent level of confidence in the result.A set of six surveys were completed over a limited time; the corresponding stream samples of the surveys found acceptable were combined to obtain high confidence composite samples. The head grade of each survey is compared to two distributions to test its acceptability; surveys that fail to conform to these trials are rejected. The accepted set of surveys, which is a robust representation of the process, is prepared into a composite for QEM-SEM analysis and mass balance purposes.Where the above practice is a standard procedure in Falconbridge for QEM*SEM purposes, in this case each individual two-hour survey unit was measured and analysed for a mass and value balance. It is shown that none of the individual mass and value balances close as well as the composite set of accepted two-hour survey units. This founding is in keeping with the averaging properties of the Central Limit Theorem.INTRODUCTIONMontcalm OperationsNi/Cu bearing ore from the Montcalm deposit is being processed at the Falconbridge, Kidd Creek Concentrator in a modified D Division circuit. The circuit was commissioned in the fall of 2004. Ore is crushed at the minesite to –19 mm and trucked to Kidd for delivey into the 4 parallel fine ore bins.Ore is milled in a rod mill followed by cyclones and 2 parallel ball mills. The grinding circuit treats Montcalm ore at an average feed rate of 100 wet tonnes/hour (750,000 tonnes/annum) and produces a flotation feed particle size of 83% -53 um. A simple flowsheet including bulk Cu/Ni roughing and 2 bulk cleaning stages followed by Cu/Ni separation in 2 stages is practiced. Soda ash is used as a pH modifier in bulk flotation. SIBX is the collector. Lime and Dextrin are added into Cu/Ni separation for the depression of pentlandite."

"Grinding circuits are operated in the presence of disturbances due to ore changes and equipment malfunctions. One of the challenges faced by the operators is the detection of a disturbance, the identification of its origin and of the action needed to minimize its impact on the process. Hydrocyclones overloading, worn or partly plugged apexes of the units of a nest, surging and internal liner detachment may cause a loss of classification capacity and quality. Recovery losses in downstream leaching or flotation circuits justify the effort in developing techniques for the detection of hydrocyclone malfunction. Two approaches for the detection of hydrocyclone fault are presented in this paper. The first proposed method uses the conventional sensors available in a grinding circuit allowing real time detection of hydrocyclone abnormal operation. The second technique is based on the use of vibration sensors installed on the hydrocyclone of a nest. This last technique enables the classification of the hydrocyclone malfunction as surging, overloading and plugged apex. The two techniques can be combined to increase the robustness of the problem detection.INTRODUCTIONHydrocyclones are used for many purposes ranging from water separation, fines removal and obviously for the preparation of the feed for subsequent concentration circuits in a mineral processing plant. The strategic role of the hydrocyclones for the preparation of the feed to the concentration circuit is often underestimated because of their simplicity of operation and robustness (Napier-Munn et al., 1996; McIvor, 1988). It remains that despite their simplicity, hydrocyclones have been studied extensively from 1970 to 1990 with the objective of developing mathematical models of their operation to be incorporated into grinding circuit simulators (Napier-Munn et al., 1996; Lynch, 1977; Flintoff et al., 1987). Such a development effort is already an acknowledgement of the importance of these units in a mineral processing plant. Several authors (Del Villar et al., 1996; Plitt and Kawatra, 1979; Casali et al., 1998) proposed soft sensors to estimate the classification efficiency of hydrocyclones using sensor measurements. However, few of the proposed sensors are used in the industry. More recently several papers were published to discuss the application of 3-D modelling of the hydrocyclones (Narasimha et al., 2005; Cullivan et al., 2004) and sensors (Bond et al., 1999; Neesse et al., 2003; Hou et al., 1998; Olson and Waterman, 2004; Williams et al., 1995; Willams et al., 1997) to help in the detection of hydrocyclone malfunction."

A geologic study of Mines 32 and 33 in Cambria County, Pa., was conducted as part of a methane control research program. Areas of high methane emission and roof instability are encountered which are related to the structural and stratigraphic features that characterize the geologic setting of these mines. Locally the folds trend N 20° E ±2°, the direction of the butt cleat in the Lower Kittanning coal. The face cleat strikes at N 69° W ±2° and the systematic rock joint in the surface bedrock strikes N 67° W ±2°. This suggests that a directional stress oriented N 70° W produced the folds and influenced the directions of coal cleat and systematic joint sets. Analysis of SLAR indicates three directions of prominent regional lineation: N 39° E, N 31° W, and N 70° W. Little gas was encountered during development mining; large volumes of gas are encountered when roof falls. Most of the gas comes from strata above the mined coal; therefore, to control methane, roof instability must be controlled. Roof falls and high rates of methane emission are most likely where less than 30 feet of many thin layers of limestone, shale, and sandstone occurs between the Lower Kittanning coal and the next coal and in zones along the margins of a sandstone channel.

A small static bed was used to study the thermal cycles required for the heat hardening of pellets based on synthetic magnetite concentrates and a naturally fine hematite. This apparatus can be employed to yield broad process data for the design of a recuperative strand system operating on the magnetite concentrates.Various alternatives are given for a process to heat harden the hematite ore but a preference is given to the production of a self fluxing pellet. Bond types and general mineralogical structures are interpreted against the optimum firing cycle necessary to produce a defined quality of pellet.INTRODUCTIONThe work reported in this paper extends that on the "Heat Hardening of Artificial Magnetite Pellets", which was described at the International Symposium on Agglomeration, sponsored by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers at Philadelphia, U.S.A. in April 1961. Así, se estima que en el Perú, existen 480 unidades mineras de oro, de las cuales 28 concentran cerca del 90% de la producción nacional, como la Minera Yanacocha, Minera Barrick, Compañía de Minas Buenaventura, Consorcio Minero Horizonte, Aruntani y Aurífera Retamas. Entre las dos regiones que producen mayor cantidad de oro está: Cajamarca y La Libertad ( 38%) y la tercera región es Arequipa, seguida por Madre de Dios (9%).

Fluid flow properties of porous media have long been of interest in such varied disciplines as geology, geophysics, soil mechanics, and chemical, civil, and mechanical engineering. This interest has resulted in numerous models of porous media that have been proposed, tested, and found to be useful under, at best, only special circumstances. A critical review of most of these models is given by Scheidegger. 1 The application of each new tool to the study of porous media has helped to test some of the existing theories and to form new ideas based on the new parameters being measured. In the application of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques to the study of the properties of fluids in porous media, the theoretical studies of Korringa et al.2 resulted in a model for the relaxation of spin polarization of protons in a hydrogenous fluid in a pore of a solid. Seevers3,4 verified this model, established a method for measuring the surface-to-volume-ratio distribution in a porous medium, and proposed a technique for determining specific permeability in sandstones. In the present investigation, the uses of NMR methods are extended and a simple model of porous media is developed from an analysis of pulsed NMR measurements. In this model, the pore spaces of a porous medium are divided into three groups on the basis of their surface-to-volume ratios. To evaluate predictions of the NMR model, laboratory measurements of spin-lattice relaxation time, porosity, permeability, and residual (irreducible) water saturation were conducted on more than 150 sandstone samples obtained from four oil fields in North America. Applications are discussed for estimating the volume of movable fluid, ?p, and the specific permeability, k, of sandstone samples. The former parameter, which can be considered as producible porosity, is expressed by ?p = [1 -- (Swr/100)]? , .... (1) where + is porosity in percent of bulk volume and Swr is the residual (irreducible) water saturation in percent of pore volume at a capillary pressure of 50 Psi. Fast, nondestructive laboratory methods are described for determining porosity, movable fluid, and permeability of sandstone samples from measurements with a pulsed NMR (spin-echo) apparatus. Procedures are given for adapting these methods to samples of irregular shape and small size. Theory General In the Korringa, Seevers, and Torrey2 (KST) model the observed decrease in the spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, of protons of a hydrogenous liquid contained in the pore spaces of a porous solid is attributed to an increase in the correlation time for the random motion of the water molecules and to the presence of paramagnetic centers at the liquid-solid interface. Expert Online, as a software system, is aimed at providing plant operators in the minerals industry with effective training and on-the-job assistance. It incorporates a number of features to achieve this goal, of which the most important is its ability to explain the dynamics of the plant and control system in simple language, mimicking an informed plant expert who has online access to the inner workings of the plant and control system. This is made possible by a novel form of Artificial Intelligence, called the Interpreting Expert System. Previous implementations of the IES were only capable of explaining controller actions. Expert Online will extend this capability to also perform the more difficult task of explaining process behaviour. Expert Online will implement three main processes, namely the accumulation of data from the controllers and plant models, the interpretation, processing and filtering of that data and lastly communicating the relevant information to the user, both as written messages and in other audio-visual forms. Although Expert Online is aimed at the operator, other plant personnel, like supervisors and plant managers, will also benefit from it. This paper focuses on the structural and functional design of Expert Online for implementation on the latest version of Mintek’s open control platform, PlantStar, highlighting advances and additions since the previous implementations of the Interpreting Expert System and concluding with an example illustrating some of the principles.

Respecto al primer método empleado, se analizan los factores que afectan el rendimiento de brocas y cómo dicho factores varían, impidiendo la adaptación de prácticas universales de perforación. Asu vez, estos mismos permiten seleccionar el tipo de broca adecuado y mejorar el máximo rendimiento del mismo. En cuanto la voladura y los explosivos, se revisan las variables fundamentales que ejercen una influencia sobre el resultado de un disparo y así realizar un estudio comparativo de los agentes explosivos en uso, tratando de interpretar el mecanismo de la explosión y a la vez aplicarlo a las diferentes formaciones presentes en Cerro. Finalmente, se describe la organización del sistema de seguridad y las obligaciones de este comité en la industria minera.

ORIGINALLY designed for copper smelting only, the reduction works of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. have been expanded over the years until now twelve different metals are produced, together with some seven other items which are used locally. Although the total tonnage treated is comparatively modest, as smelting plants go, the variety of operations makes one of the most complex and interesting metallurgical problems in the world. The original plant, at La Fundicion, operated from July 1906 until September 1923. In 1922 a new copper smelter was built at La Oroya, which produced its first copper on Nov. 23, 1922. It is in this plant, greatly enlarged, that metallurgical operations now center. La Oroya is situated at the junction of the Cerro de Pasco Railroad and the Ferrocarril Central del Peru, at an altitude of 12,175 ft.-well over two miles. Many of the various operations stem from two principal smelting circuits which are themselves of conventional types. Copper ores and concentrates are roasted, smelted in reverberatory furnaces and converters, and blister copper produced. Lead ores, concentrates, and other materials are sintered, smelted in blast furnaces to crude lead which is partially fire-refined, and finally electrolytically refined by a modified Betts process.

During the course of the investigation of manganese mineral occurrences in the western United States, the Bureau of Mines collected several lots of ore' from properties in the vicinity of Winkelman, Ariz. As none of the ores would be marketable directly, an investigation was made to determine their amenability to concentration by ore dressing. The Geronimo group of claims is in Pinal County, 8 miles west of Winkelman, Ariz. The manganese oxides occur as cementing material in ore zones of conglomerate. Representative samples of a 2-ton lot of ore cut from outcrops of two lenticular deposits were laboratory-tested. Two 1-ton samples from the Benningfield property were similar in physical characteristics but differed in grade. This claim is 11-1/2 miles south of Winkelman and about 1 mile west of the San Pedro River on the south side of Putman, Wash. The manganese minerals occurred as nodules and lenses, replacing limestone, in a capping over a dark, igneous dike. The North Star group consists of five claims on the west side of the San Pedro River 14 miles south of Winkelman. The ore consists of a low-grade, manganese oxide-calcite occurrence interspersed with stringers of higher-grade material and is present as filling in a fissure zone in porphyry. Two samples were obtained by the examining engineer; one sample represented run-of-mine material, the other represented ore from the vein that could be hand-sorted or selectively mined.
