?Soil quality is the capacity of a soil to function, within ecosystem and land use boundaries, to sustain biological productivity, maintain environmental quality, and promote plant, animal and human health?. In the long-term, vegetative rehabilitation of mining wastes aims at, as far as possible, the proper ecological integration of the reclaimed area into the surrounding landscape, which is sustainable and requires minimal maintenance. A certain succession pattern is therefore needed. Recent ecological concepts recognize the role of the substrate?s quality and nutrients in affecting the rates and directions of succession patterns. Although pedogenesis and eventually soil quality in mine waste are not well known, monitoring of soil quality parameters in kimberlite mine tailings reveal a remarkable establishment and or improvement of specifics oil quality indicators. During the same time the vegetative cover?s total functionality as well as reproductive ability improved. Functions of soil, and thus soil quality, can be assessed at the field, farm, ecosystem, pedosphere, and global scale. It is recognized, however, that management of soil becomes increasingly difficult at larger scales, but for demarcated mine waste sites it is possible to ameliorate and manage and assess soil functions and quality. Therefore the significance of the study is the following: soil functions and quality become inseparable from the idea of system sustainability, and are considered as key indicators of ecosystem sustainability on rehabilitated mine tailings material.

This paper describes the methods of mining and washing brown iron are in 1957 at the Sawyer mine, leased by Wayne County Mining Co., and the Fore mine, leased by Four Mining Co., both in southern Missouri; it is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining and milling methods and costs in various districts of the United States. The Sawyer mine is in Wayne County, about 10 miles north-northeast of Williamsville (fig. 1); the Fore mine is in Howell County, about 20 miles southwest of West Plains (fig. 2). Both are open-pit mines from which the crude are was upgraded by washing and hand-sorting to produce are of grade and quality suitable for sale to operators of iron and steel furnaces. The operations described are typical of many others that produce or have produced marketable brown iron are from small sedimentary deposits, several hundred of which outcrop on the crests or hill sides of southern Missouri (fig. 3). The 1957 production of marketable brown iron are by 40 separate operations in the southern part of the State was 281,427 wet long tons, valued at $1,637,243. Production from the Sawyer mine that year was 17,000 dry long tons of washed are, and from the Fore mine, 20,816 dry long tons.

Fire suppression systems are now recognised by both NFPA 502 and PIARC as legitimate tools for both life protection and asset protection. The effectiveness of these tools for life protection demands extremely rapid and accurate incident detection coupled with rapid response. This rapid response must be integrated with other emergency systems such as emergency ventilation. The March 2007 fatal Burnley Tunnel incident in Australia graphically illustrates the potential of effectively integrated fixed suppression systems to protect people from harm and save infrastructure from damage. Despite the raft of technology available in that instance to the operator it was the human operatorÆs ability to effectively control the emergency equipment and not the equipment itself which so positively influenced the threat to life and property.

Ventilation network modeling in mine planning dates back at least three decades, but it is not widely accepted and/or practiced until the last decade, thanks to the advent of modern computers with their increase d speed and storage space. There are at least half a dozen such modeling software packages available on the market each with different features and acceptance. This paper compares five popular software packages,?? VnetPC Pro, MineVent, VentSIM Visual, VentGraph and MFIRE 3.0. A case study using Missouri S&T?s Experimental Mine is conducted to compare the five software packages in features, interface, output display and user-friendliness.

One of the most important factors leading to the success of a cement plant is its location. A multicriteria decision-making method is used to rank alternative plant locations. The set of criteria is established and corresponding criteria should be established for each case study, although this multicriteria decision-making approach has broader applicability. In this paper, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) with 5 criteria is used to develop a location evaluation hierarchy for an alumina?cement plant in East Azerbaijan province of Iran. Five alternatives for the plant location are evaluated. The main criteria are transportation, water supply, power supply, fuel supply and land. Other criteria have the same importance as these five alternatives. The alternatives are ranked by a multicriteria method and the best site is proposed. The era of the shield-supported longwall face began in the United States a little over 25 years ago. The most fundamental development of the shield in the past 25 years has been an increase in size and capacity and a progression toward two-legged designs in favor over four-legged shields. Is the “bigger-the-better” design philosophy justified? The advantage of the two-legged design is largely attributed to its active horizontal force caused by the forward orientation of the leg cylinders. How do we know this? You might be surprised to learn that shield loading data may suggest otherwise. In addition, what about setting pressures? Should they be set as high as possible? Some people have advocated that setting pressures should equal the yield pressure. Does this make any sense? Is yielding a good or bad thing? These are some questions still worthy of investigation that are addressed in this paper. The first major change in gateroad support was the use of cable bolts to replace conventional wood cribbing particularly in Western mines. Standing support changed very little until the mid-1990s, when Strata Products1 introduced the Hercules and Propsetter supports in Eastern mines and Burrell Mining Products introduced the Can support in Western mines. Since then, there has been a dramatic increase in new roof support technologies for longwall gateroad support. Historically, standing support, including shield supports, have been designed based on a simplistic model requiring the support to have sufficient capacity to support the gravity loading of a perceived detached rock mass. This approach ignores the stiffness of the support and the resulting ground deformation that is known to be critical to roof stability. Recently, a new approach based on the ground reaction concept has been promoted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to account for the interaction of the support with the rock mass behavior in achieving ground stability. In addition to gateroad support design, this concept has ramifications for shield capacities, setting pressures, and recovery room support design that challenge current practices in these areas. Although longwall mining has matured into the safest and most productive underground mining method used today, traditional concepts of roof support design and practice should still be evaluated and challenged. Ultimately, advancements in the science of ground control are made by recognizing deficiencies in current theories and thinking outside the box.

Sulphide minerals, such as pyrite and sphalerite, are leached by ferric sulphate. This reaction produces ferrous sulphate and other dissolved products. The ferrous sulphate is re-oxidized to ferric sulphate by bacteria. These reactions can be written as: [ ] However, in 1964 Silverman and Ehrlich proposed that this is not the only role that is played by bacteria. These researchers proposed that T. ferrooxidans enhances the rate of oxidation of pyrite above that achieved by chemical reaction with ferric sulphate at the same solution conditions. This enhancement in the rate of dissolution was proposed to occur by direct microbiological action, possibly by the extra cellular secretion of an enzymatic oxidant. Since the Silverman and Ehrlich proposal, different authors have made opposing claims concerning the action of T. ferrooxidanson pyrite. Thermal stress relief by means of a typical heat treatment cycle (660oC for one hr) is compared with the one achieved through vibratory stress relief at resonant and multiple resonant frequencies for the D-406 HSLA material. Our analysis of the data is based on the microhardness profiles measured for the entire length of scales, namely, base metal, heat affected zone (HAZ) and the weld bead itself. The profiles obtained using the two techniques mimic each other, for an equivalent 70% stress relief level. The data are further qualified by impact testing wherein the zone of interest is projected in the retention groove to provide impact by the pendulum striker in the Charpy mode. Higher equivalent energy absorption in the treated specimens confirms the efficacy of the vibratory method. The present work rectifies earlier anomaly where heat treatment has been reported at 310oC for the same material.

An empirical equation for the prediction of the viscosity of several pure paraffin hydrocarbons and nitrogen is presented. It involves temperature, pressure and six constants of the material, and it applies reliably to both liquids and gases. The equation is similar in form to van der Waal's equation of state. For the paraffin hydrocarbons methane through r-hexane and nitrogen, an average absolute deviation of 1.9 percent was obtained on 1,006 data points described in the literature by 14 authors. When this equation is extended to complex, liquid hydrocarbon mixtures, a correlation was obtained with an average absolute deviation of 9.9 percent. INTRODUCTION Equations describing the flow of gas and liquid through porous media contain the viscosity coefficient of the fluid. If other pertinent variables remain constant, the volume rate of flow is inversely proportional to this coefficient. In dealing with condensate fluids and volatile oils, however, the compositional effects resulting from changing pressure materially affect the viscosity. The effect of compositional changes also may be significant in certain secondary recovery or pressure maintenance processes, notably miscible displacement or gas injection. Early attempts to describe the performance of reservoirs utilized a volumetric material balance method wherein gas and liquid in the reservoir were identified as produced gas and liquid at the surface. This method of analysis proved adequate for reservoirs at moderate temperature and pressure that contained gas with moderately low amounts of condensable materials. The volumetric material balance procedures for "black oil" reservoirs leave much to be desired when applied to condensate and volatile oil reservoirs because phase behavior and compositional changes are relatively more important in these cases. The alternative is a compositional material balance, which in turn, requires a correlation of properties of the reservoir fluid with composition. This paper supplies this correlation in regard to viscosity, for reservoir crude oils. REVIEW OF LITERATURE The literature contains many empirical equations describing the effects of composition, temperature and pressure on the viscosities of pure liquids and binary liquid mixtures. However, the applicability of a majority of these equations is limited to very low pressures and to a small number of systems. Most of them, when applied to complex hydrocarbon systems, are of little value. The lack of utility of the majority of equations results from the fact that they were developed to show the separate effect of temperature, pressure or composition on viscosity, but not to predict the viscosity as a function of all three variables. And with the few exceptions noted below, they were developed to apply to much simpler systems than hydrocarbon mixtures. Eakin1 developed an equation for the viscosity of pure light hydrocarbons applicable in the gas, liquid and dense fluid regions, and in its most general form is written as µ - µo =A(ebP - e-cpk) The pure component viscosity at atmospheric pressure and temperature T, µo, was calculated using the Sutherland equation: µo = BT3/2/T + S The constants in Eakin's equation permitted the term e-CPk to become quite small at high densities (above 0.215 gm/cc), and the general equation would simplify to

To provide insights and assistances for the optimization of ventilation systems for U. S. under-ground coal mines facing both methane control and spontaneous combustion issues, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study is being conducted to investigate the effect of the ventilation scheme on the prevention of spontaneous combustion in longwall gob areas. This report focuses on the flow patterns within the gob under three different ventilation systems; one-entry and two-entry bleederless systems as well as a three-entry bleeder system. The gas flow in the caved gob area is simulated as a laminar flow through porous media while the gas flow in ventilation airways is simulated as a fully developed turbulent flow. The air flow patterns are visualized using flow path lines. Air velocity contours and vector data are also obtained. The possible location of critical velocity zones where the gob is most liable to spontaneous heating is discussed.

"Preg-robbing has been known for many years, where increased losses are suffered because dissolved gold is removed from solution by adsorption onto carbonaceous matter. In direct cyanidation circuits it is reasonable to conclude that the preg-robbed gold is either in a gold cyanide [Au(CN) - 2, AuCN] or metallic [Au°] form. However, in circuits with a pre-oxidation step possibilities increase and multiply even further because of water recycle streams containing apparent and not-so-apparent gold ligands. It is in these circuits where speciation of sorbed gold, i.e. the identification of the gold compound, is useful. The importance arises from the fact that proper identification of the sorbed gold species can be used to determine how, when, where and why gold was removed from solution, thereby identifying the exact cause of the problem and providing clues as to how it may be rectified.INTRODUCTIONTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt ever to speciate gold preg-robbed by carbonaceous matter using a surface sensitive microbeam technique. This approach enables the direct determination of gold species sorbed on carbonaceous particulates, opening an entirely new field in the understanding of the chemistry of gold sorption on carbon. The reasoning behind this effort was to add to the current knowledge of the detrimental effect chloride ions have on gold recovery by the pressure oxidation and in particular why in the ensuing CIL step, gold is not being desorbed from the surface of the carbonaceous particles (Table 1)."

Background: A cross-sectional study was conducted in November2001 to establish the prevalence rates of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoea) in a coalmining town in Mpumalanga. Methods: 155 adults were recruited (79 males and 76 females), by holding community meetings, and by door-to-door recruitment. Saliva and urine specimens were collected for the analysis of HIV and STI prevalence, respectively. Results: The mean age for males was 31.35 years (min = 19 yrs and max = 50 yrs) and the mean age of the female participants was31.90 years (min = 17 yrs, max = 49 yrs). The prevalence of HIV was found to be 22.78% [95% CI (14.09?33.59)] in the males vs. 47.37%[95% CI (35.79?55.16)] in the females, [p = 0.001, OR = 3.05, 95%CI(1.49?6.26)]. The prevalence of C. trachomatis was 7.90% [95% CI(2.95?16.39)] in the males vs. 12.86% [95% CI (6.05?23.00)] in the females, p = 0.324. The prevalence of N. gonorrhoea was 3.79%[95% CI (0.79?1.08)] in the males vs. 9.86% [95% CI (4.06?19.26)]in the females, p = 0.137. HIV was significantly associated with C. trachomatis, [p = 0.032, OR = 3.18, 95% CI (1.04?9.72)], but was not significant when stratified by gender. HIV was not significantly associated with N. gonorrhoea (p = 0.072) but it was significantly associated when stratified by gender, p = 0.001 for females. There were no significant associations between HIV and age (p = 0.408), even upon stratification by gender. Conclusions: HIV prevalence in this community is high, and corresponds to national figures. However, the prevalence of STIs is surprisingly low as it would be expected to be high in a migrant population. Although communities are exposed to expanding peer-education activities that encourage behaviour change, the prevalence of HIV in this group. This annual report deals with four distinct tasks related to research on the safety and reliability of mine electrical power systems. Task one is to develop tests and the associated instrumentation to detect incipient faults on a mine or any low-voltage power system. Task two is a dual effort related to the digital prediction of electrical transients on mine power systems and laboratory testing of transient suppression devices. Task three is also a dual effort. This task consists of both theoretical and laboratory work to assess both the reliability and the fail-safe characteristics of several items of protective equipment used in mine power systems. Task four consists of an effort to use programmable calculators and/or computer terminals to check overcurrent protective device coordination.

THE micrography and macrography of aluminum and its alloys present certain difficulties. Many of the difficulties attendant on the micrography have been removed by methods developed during the past few years, notably those of E. H. Dix, Jr.1 The development of grain size in aluminum and its alloys may be equally troublesome, yet comparatively little detailed attention appears to have been given to it. Satisfactory reagents. are available for the development of such structures in ferrous and most non-ferrous metals, but those applied to aluminum and its alloys, i. e., alcoholic or aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide or hydrofluoric acid are not entirely satisfactory. Hanson and Archbutt,2 in speaking of these two reagents, state that "These two reagents give fairly satisfactory results, but they sometimes produce badly tarnished surfaces from which the surface deposit is difficult to remove." It has been our experience that neither of these reagents is to be entirely relied on for developing structures suitable for study or photography. This means that when the etch fails to produce satisfactory results the, specimen must be repolished, through the 000-paper at least, and then etched with another reagent. This procedure entails a con¬siderable loss of time, and the final results may not be all that might be desired. However, the reagent to be described, although not a panacea for all etching troubles, has improved results so markedly that it is felt that it is worth offering as a grain-size etch generally applicable to aluminum and aluminum alloys. Czochralski3 in 1915 mentioned the application of a solution of 10 to 20 c. c. concentrated hydrofluoric acid in 100 c.c. absolute alcohol, etching in this reagent being followed by dipping in concentrated hydrochloric-acid solution.

This report is a continuation and expansion of a previous USBM grant (No. G0254004) which examined alternative methods of handling the parting between two coal seams in a surface mining operation. The alternative methods consist of equipment implementation in either a stowing or haulback technique. Following a typical strip mine conformation, the parting is directly stowed or hauled back and placed in the pit bottom after second seam removal. The objectives are to produce an environmentally sound material placement technique and to increase prime stripping machine utilization. This report contains the engineering philosophy behind two computer programs created to evaluate parting handling methods over d wide range of coal and parting thickness ratios. The nature of the computer approach allows cost sensitivity analysis and quick updating of costs. The two programs are clearly presented with documentation and examples such that consumers may apply then to their own operations.

ECONOMIC recovery, which began in 1958, carried through into 1959 but was somewhat retarded by the 116-day steel strike beginning in July 1959. Recovery and economic growth increased production and consumption of mineral fuels 3 percent above 1958. The increase was accomplished despite a drop of 26 percent in coal exports. Prices remained constant during the year so that the value of production and consumption also increased 3 percent over 1958. Stocks in the hands of producers at yearend were little changed from the supply at the beginning of the year. Employment in the field of mineral fuels decreased 6.4 percent from 1958. Average hourly earnings were up 7 percent, and average hours worked were up 5 percent, with the result that weekly earnings gained 11.8 percent. Internal freight rates were relatively constant, but ocean tanker rates declined both in 1958 and 1959 from the high rates charged during the Suez crisis. The index of major input expenses decreased for anthracite, held constant for bituminous coal, and increased for petroleum. The index of labor cost per dollar of product and per ton of product declined again in 1959 to a new low in anthracite and bituminous-coal mining industries.

Several Approaches to Enhance the Bioleaching of Enargite Some approaches were investigated to enhance the recovery of Cu from enargite by bioleaching with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans using the galvanic interaction with pyrite and activated carbon, and with thermophilic bacteria, Acidianus brierleyi. Addition of pyrite initially enhanced Cu leaching by the Galvanic effect, but after that the formation of secondary minerals passivated the surface of enargite in inoculated batches. Activated carbon improved Cu recovery from enargite much better than pyrite, when it is contacted with enargite. Recovery of Cu from enargite has been recorded to at largest 2.4 per cent within 30 days in the presence of activated carbon when mesophilic bacteria were inoculated at 25¦C. The recovery of Cu from enargite was drastically enhanced by inoculation of thermophilic bacteria, Acidianus brierleyi, up to 60 per cent within 40 days at 70¦C and still not leveled off after 40 days unless the formation of Fe(III) precipitates occurred. After 40 days dissolved molar ratio of Cu/As is around 5.2, suggesting that metal-deficient sulfides and/or ferric arsenate might be formed on the surface of enargite.

This paper presents tunnel design considerations for the SR75/282 Transportation Corridor Project in Coronado, California. The project is managed by the City of Coronado in cooperation with Caltrans and the US Navy and may include a one-mile long twin-tunnel section with two options: a 36.5 foot diameter twin-bored tunnel or a twin cut-and-cover box. The alignment crosses the Coronado Fault, and design provisions were needed at the fault crossing to maintain life safety and prevent rapid inundation of the tunnel in the event of fault rupture. These provisions are discussed along with considerations related to liquefaction and ground shaking. The project is currently in the planning stage with construction to start around 2012.
