Geochemical conditions within a leaching operation are heterogeneous. This variability arises mainly from hydrological controls imparted by physical characteristics of the ore and by heterogeneous metallurgical properties at the rock-fragment and industrial heap scale. The resulting chemical conditions are responsible for stratified mineral recovery, non-uniform extraction and prolonged leach cycles. This paper presents field data from a sulfide-leaching operation which clearly demonstrate the impact of chemical heterogeneity on metal recovery and the potential use of modern measuring techniques to facilitate operational monitoring and decision making for optimization of leaching operations.

The use of rock-socketed Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles is new to the Austin and central Texas region. This case history describes the design methodology, load test results, quality control procedures and the rate of production pile installation for the first large commercial project where ACIP piles were used in Austin. The piles were 24 inches in diameter and extended through about 45 ft of alluvial materials to be socketed 6 ft into limestone. A full-scale instrumented load test was performed on a test pile that was loaded to 452 tons and held for 24 hours. Telltales were installed in the middle and the tip of the test pile. As part of the overall quality control procedures, singlehole sonic integrity logging was performed on the production piles to verify structural integrity during pile installation. During pile production, an average of 14 piles per day were installed, which is approximately seven times faster than the original design that consisted of drilled shaft foundations.

Introduction This paper attempts to summarize some of the major criticisms of drug testing. Eight problems with drug testing are discussed. These are: • It does not measure something employers have a reasonable need to know, • It is a distortion of priorities, • Drug use is not known to be associated with increased risk of occupational injuries, • Drug testing is proposed as a dangerously simplistic solution to poorly conceived problems, • In the absence of safeguards, it is unacceptably inaccurate, • In the absence of treatment commitments and confidentiality protection for persons dependent on drugs, it is an unethical practice of medicine, • Drug testing is an invasion of privacy, and • It will have a negative effect on treatment of persons with drug or alcohol dependencies. Employers' need to know It does not measure something employers have a reasonable need to know. It is reasonable for employers and fellow workers to want to know if workers are functionally impaired (intoxicated) while on the job. Drug testing does not measure impairment. It measures the concentration of drug metabolities in urine or blood. Unlike measurements of blood alcohol concentration (BAC), drug metabolites are not correlated with impairment or intoxication. They indicate only drug use in the one to two weeks before a urine sample. And, in some instances, they indicate chronic use. Impairment caused by drug use, on the other hand, occurs immediately and declines rapidly within hours. Drug metabolites may linger for days afterwards. Drug metabolite concentrations in urine are a function of (Morgan, 1984; Schartz and Hawks, 1985; MMWR, 1983): • the amount and purity of drug consumed before taking the test, • when the drug was consumed, • whether the person was a chronic user, in which case a certain amount of drug metabolites would be stored in body fat and slowly released, • the person's metabolic rate, and • for metabolites in urine, any dilution effects of urine. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the various techniques far mine roadway dust control. This evaluation included (a) the types of dust suppressants available, (b) the interaction of these products with the properties of the roadway surface, and (c) the costs and performance measures of the predominantly used dust suppressants. Over 30 products were identified having a wide range of effectiveness depending largely on the properties of the road base, subsurface, and wearing surface. The effectiveness of a dust suppressant was also found to depend on the application and maintenance procedures employed. As a result of this investigation five dust suppressants were identified s being predominant in the surface mining industry: Coherex, wetting agents, lignin sulfonate, water, and calcium chloride: An approximate cost-effectiveness analysis, limited by the lack of quantitative field performance data, showed that the five suppressants ranked in the order given above, with water being one of the least cost effective. This report also presents an analysis of applicable federal and state regulations.

The "Art" of Big Hole Drilling has been in a continual state of evolution at the Nevada Test Site since the start of underground testing in 1961. Emplacement holes for nuclear devices are still being drilled by the rotary drilling process, but almost all the hardware and systems have undergone many changes during the intervening years. The current design of bits, cutters, and other big hole drilling hardware results from contributions of manufacturers and Test Site personnel. The dual string, air lift, reverse circulation system was developed at the Test Site. Necessity was really the Mother of this invention, but this circulation system is worthy of consideration under almost any condition. Drill rigs for Big Hole drilling are usually adaptations of large Oil Well drill rigs with minor modifications required to handle the big bits and drilling assemblies. Steel remains the favorite shaft lining material, but a lot of thought is being given to concrete linings, especially precast concrete.

The objectives of this investigation were to determine the strain propagation laws for a strain pulse in salt and to compare the seismic effects from the detonation of different explosives in salt. The investigation showed that a strain propagation law of the type, e = K(R/W 1/3 ) n, and a strain energy propagation law of the type, Ea/W 1/3 = K(R/WI/3)b , are valid in salt. A change in the regression law coefficient, n , was noted with strain level. A similar change in b was inferred because strain energy is proportional to the square of strain amplitude. Particle velocity data may be used interchangeably with strain data under the test conditions.

Electrical power generation was studied in a laboratory-scale, open-cycle vortex MHD generator, which offers several advantages over straight-channel generators that require separate combustors. Compactness, lower capital cost, and high-energy release are obtained by combining the combustor and generator into one unit in the vortex generator. In addition, the vortex generator uses a simple solenoid rather than the more complex and expensive saddle magnet required for straight channel generators. Although the vortex generator must utilize combustion gases with a low Hall coefficient in order to be efficient in direct comparison to the linear generator, the primary motivation for this experimental device in terms of ultimate objective was to investigate the vortex generator with applications to direct coal firing and with combustion taking place in specially designed expansion nozzles. The vortex device offers one decided advantage over the linear device in this regard because slag deposits do not degrade or short-circuit the coaxial electrodes as is the case for a linear machine. The experimental vortex generator consists of a modified cyclone burner 7 ½ in ID by 21 in long, with the inner wall used as one electrode together with a coaxial center electrode. Power was obtained by impressing an axial field of 3,000 G from an air core solenoid magnet. Tests were conducted by seeding natural gas seeded with potassium acetate and burning with preheated oxygen-enriched air. Power generation was lower than calculated because theoretical plasma velocities were not achieved.

A section of the largest Superfund site in the country has become a success story for engineering innovation and for cooperative problem solving. “Superfund site” and “success story” are phrases that are not commonly found in the same sentence. Yet, their use seems justified. The project’s certification of construction completion from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes a commendation. It reads, “for completing the project nearly a year ahead of schedule, at a cost substantially less than estimated originally and without com-promising the requirements for protection of human health and safety or the environment.” The EPA director who issued that certification also referred to the project as “a positive example of cooperation among all who have a stake in the outcome.”

An evaluation of a nuisance-emissions-discriminating smart mine fire sensor system was made in an operating coal mine. These field evaluations were conducted to determine the sensor system?s ability to discern nuisance emissions, such as diesel exhaust, emissions from flame cutting and welding operations or hydrogen gas from a charging station, from real fires and to compare the number of falsely reported fire alarms generated between the sensor system and a standard carbon monoxide (CO) monitor. The sensor system?s ability to operate successfully in the working environment of an operating coal mine was also evaluated. The smart mine fire sensor system consisted of four sensors whose data outputs were fused with the use of a neural-network-type computer program. Long-term trials were conducted in a haulage way, a belt entry, and a track entry. The system functioned successfully in the belt entry, in accordance with its developmental goals, where the sensor system even discriminated events not anticipated during development. It was not totally effective in the haulage way and track entry, though, due to a combination of significant diurnal air temperature variations, dust, and mechanically induced vibrations. Also, deteriorating rib conditions contributed to operational problems in the haulage way evaluation. In general, the smart mine fire sensor provided nuisance emissions discrimination and was shown to be a viable new approach for mine atmospheric monitoring, enhancing miner safety. This paper describes the in-mine evaluation of the smart mine fire sensor system and discusses recommendations for improving the system. The Iron Ore Company of Canada has successfully employed advanced process control (APC) to optimize the operation of their induration machines. A significant increase in machine throughput and a reduction in fired pellet quality giveaway were observed following the APC implementation on all six machines. This paper discusses the opportunity for process control optimization in induration, reviews the property estimation and multivariable control technologies, and describes how the IOCC control strategy captured this opportunity. APC performance data is presented. The dependence of APC performance on control room operator acceptance, process equipment and instrumentation is highlighted.

Minerals Appraisers/Valuers often find great difficulty or failure in attempting to employ the Sales Comparison Approach to the Market Value Appraisal of development and operating stage mineral properties. An important factor generally overlooked is a comparison of net operating income (NOI) margins on a per-unit-of-production basis between mineral properties, whether these be demonstrated or forecast margins. NOI margins can vary greatly between mines or quarries that are producing similar products. Ultimately, the expected NOI margin determines what a buyer is willing to pay for an income producing property. Common criticisms of the sales comparison approach by minerals appraisers are introduced. These are counterbalanced by raising some issues in the way the inputs for the Income Approach are usually derived by minerals appraisers, and by review of some conspicuous examples of the much too common misuse or abuse of the income approach in market value minerals appraisals. Example transaction analyses and sales comparison analyses are used to demonstrate the author?s methodology for adjusting units of resource in his transaction adjustment tables (see APPENDIX). The examples are used as the basis for discussion of ways to employ adjustments for operating economics and many other factors, while cautioning about the potential for double counting. The conclusions include a recommendation that minerals appraisers attempt to apply at least two of the three valuation approaches when appraising the market or fair value of development and operating stage mineral properties, the two being the sales comparison and income approaches.

The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits provides plant staff with a new means to improve circuit performance. However, successful execution of a plant processing performance improvement project, with verifiable improvements, requires a significant number of accompanying steps beyond using this equation. In order to identify and articulate all these steps, a study was undertaken with the metallurgical staff from two milling operations and process application specialists from a grinding media manufacturing company. “Task analysis” of improving plant grinding performance was carried out. This analysis identified the required steps, and ultimately yielded a “Plant Grinding Circuit Processing Performance Management/ Improvement System.

This report presents a literature review conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The review summarizes what has been learned from recent empirical studies of the relationship between mine safety and characteristics of miners, mine management, and mining companies. The review is based on literature published in the United States during the period from 1976 to 1988. In addition to summarizing the empirical findings, this report discusses the implications and limitations of these studies, and gives recommendations for improving mine safety. An annotated bibliography section appears in the appendix.

A two year study into the effects of coal mining induced subsidence on cliff lines was undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources with the support of a grant under the National Energy Research, Development and Demonstration Program. A new monitoring technique, using an Electronic Distance Meter and acrylic reflectors attached to the cliffs, provided safety for the surveyors and extensive and accurate three dimensional displacement data on the movement of the cliffs as they were being undermined. The study report included many graphs showing the measured vertical and horizontal displacements, differential subsidence, tilts and strains and included analysis of these movements with various parameters, such as, seam thickness, depth of cover and distances between the reflectors, longwall face and the edge of the chain pillar. Some of these graphs are presented in this paper and could be used, with caution, to predict subsidence movements around other cliff lines, after allowing for differences in geology and mining layout. A mechanism is suggested as an explanation for the observed high horizontal movements around the cliff lines. Sixteen percent of the overall lengths of cliffs that were undermined during the monitoring study fell and the contributions of various factors that appeared to influence the cliff falls are discussed. It is concluded that no single factor dominated as the major cause of the cliff falls and, often, many factors combined to cause cliff face instability.

Most methods for the treatment of scrap printed circuit boards do not reclaim the components in working order as the boards are either fed to a copper smelter, to recover the valuable elements, or, simply landfilled. This work reports the dissolution of the solder in fluoroboric acid containing Ti4+ ions which was particularly selective for solder, allowing the components to be recovered. The solder was subsequently electrowon from the leachant. The boards were then shredded and the copper dissolved in ammonium sulfate and, then treated via solvent extraction to give an electrolyte suitable for electrowinning. The remainder of the metals were dissolved aqua regia, silver remained unattacked by the aqua regia, palladium precipitated as Pd(NH4)Cl6 in the presence of zinc and nickel, the gold was removed by solvent extraction and precipitated as nanoparticles. The aqua regia was then diluted and the zinc and nickel separated by solvent extraction.

Experimental Study of Ore Characterisation Methods for AG/SAG Mills Mining companies have long recognised the importance of ore breakage characterisation in design and optimisation of their crushing and grinding circuits. In one of the industry standard methods relevant to AG/SAG milling, ore is characterised using mainly high energy single impact tests. However recent DEM studies have suggested that breakage in AG/SAG mills is mainly due to low energy repetitive (or multiple) collisions rather than single high energy impacts. Hence a study was initiated at the JKMRC to investigate the behaviour of ores under such conditions. Carefully designed experiments have been performed using two laboratory mill sizes (0.6 m and 1.1 m diameter) to mimic the reported low energy repetitive impact breakage under low load conditions. The breakage characterisation parameters derived from standard high energy single impact tests on the same ores was then used to predict the low energy repetitive impact breakage. Significant bias was found in the simulations which clearly warranted further investigation. The extensive experimental program which followed employed three separate methods: the JKRBT (JK Rotary Breakage Tester) for high energy single impact and low energy repetitive impacts, gravity drops for low energy repetitive impacts, and laboratory mills to provide an extended number of low energy repetitive impacts. The breakage energies associated with these experiments were accurately measured with a high speed video camera. Two breakage indices, the degree of breakage (t10) and the breakage probability (S) were used to describe the breakage test results. This paper summarises the major results from this experimental study, which has facilitated the development of a new breakage characterization method relevant to AG/SAG mill modelling.

Alteration and mineralisation at the Island Copper deposit is related to the intrusion of Early Jurassic quartz feldspar porphyry dykes into surrounding comagmatic Bonanza volcanic rocks. The pyrophyilite alteration zone forms an upward flaring cone, largely hosted within a breccia body that cross-cuts the Co, Mo, and Au-rich ore shell. This alteration zone contains pyrophyllite, dumortierite and diaspore and resembles alteration occurring in some high-sulfidation deposits, but which is barren. Fluid-mineral equilibria and fluid inclusion studies indicate formation at approximately 300 ¦C from fluids dominated by steam and gases. These fluids appear highly acidic, but sulfur poor, leading to extreme base leaching within the breccia body and surrounding rocks.

In the past two decades, high horizontal stress has been attributed to many ground control failures. Most believe that entries parallel to the high horizontal stress is most stable and least stable when perpendicular to it. Entry stability decreases when the angle between entry and horizontal stress increases. The concept of 2-D stress shadow has been proposed for selection of proper panel orientation, often with mixed results. In this paper 3-D finite element modeling was used to analyze the stress distribution at the headgate of a longwall panel subject to high horizontal stress at various angles. It was found that the directions of induced principal stresses at the longwall face and headgate are independent of the panel orientation. The induced principal stresses concentrate or relief at headgate based on the panel orientation with respect to the directions of the induced principal stresses. Accordingly, only 3-D modeling can fully account for the effects of high horizontal stress on panel orientation. The paper illustrates in details the changes in orientation and magnitude of all three principal stresses around the longwall face and T-junction area as panel orientation changes.

Alluvial gold deposits in the area studied are preserved on the valley floor and elevated terraces due to a sequence of glacial/interglacial events during Pleistocene and Recent times. Continued regional uplift has overprinted these events. Prospecting by drilling and bulk sampling has demonstrated a complex alluvial gold resource which is now being mined.
