The extent and the rate of reduction of slags produced from the smelting of recycled lead batteries were investigated under laboratory conditions using graphite as reductant. Simultaneous reduction of PbO, Fe2O3, Sb2O3 and As2O3 occurred at temperatures of 1180 and 1200°C, with Sb and As reporting to the metal phase while the PbO content of the slag was above 2 wt%. Fuming of As from the metal occurred at lower concentrations of lead in the slag. Discard slags with low levels of As, Pb and Sb were produced. Arsenic levels were reduced to less than accurately measurable by ICP analysis, and Sb levels in the final slags were in the range of 0.1 to 0.2 wt%. The kinetic data obtained were analysed and compared with other measurements on lead oxide containing slags. The results showing a dependence of the reduction rate on the oxidation state and the basicity are consistent with other studies on well characterised industrial and. synthetic lead slags. These results indicate that when carbonaceous reductants are used, the rate of interfacial reactions play an important role in enabling the production of environmentally acceptable discard slags.

"Silicon deposits containing 99,9 wt.% of main component were obtained by SiO2 electrolysis from chloride-fluoride melts. The operating temperature was varied from 973 up to 1073 K. The conditions for obtaining crystalline fibrous micro- or nanodeposits were determined. The deposits were investigated by ESM methodIntroductionThere are large reserves of natural quartz of high purity in Russia. Processing of this raw material by electrolysis in molten salts produces silicon containing 99.9 weight percent of basic substance.[1]This method is less energy-consuming in comparison to existing methods for producing high purity silicon from gas phase.Another advantage of the electrolytic method for producing silicon from its oxide in molten salts is the possibility of production of high-purity silicon under air atmosphere. It dramatically reduces costs of the electrolytic cell construction, and the operating costs at electrolysis.On our opinion, the main advantage of the electrolytic production from SiO2 in molten salts is a unique opportunity to obtain micro-and nanostructures of silicon deposits. In particular, it is possible to obtain fibrous structures of silicon. The electrolytic method allows smoothly adjusting the thickness and length of silicon micro- and nano-wires by varying the cathode current density and temperature of the process."

"This work presents the preparation and characterization of a nanocomposite based on Poly(butylene terephthalate) PBT and Brazilian smectitic clay (bentonite chocolate clay). Before being incorporated as clay nanoparticles in PBT resin, the clay was organically modified by the addition of a quaternary salt and sodium carbonate. PBT/Clay nanocomposite (96.3:3.70 wt %) was obtained by using a twin-screw extruder machine. After extrusion process, the nanocomposite was characterized by tensile, flexural and impact tests, SEM, Vicat, HDT, DSC, TGA and XRD tests. The results showed that the properties of the nanocomposite obtained were superior to those of neat PBT. Concerning the temperature of thermal distortion (HDT) an expressive gain of around 45 % was presented to PBT/Clay nanocomposite compared to PBT evidencing the interaction of nanofiller with the polymeric matrix.IntroductionPolymer-clay nanocomposites, also called as polymer layered silicates nanocomposites have attracted much attention from both industry and academia over the past decade because they frequently exhibit unexpected properties. In contrast to the traditional fillers, nanofillers, in particular, nanoclay, is found to be effective. The addition of a small amount (< 5 wt.%) can show significant improvement in mechanical, thermal and barrier properties, flammability resistance, and electrical/electronic properties of the final polymer nanocomposite without requiring special processing techniques. Also, as with other nano-size particles, the overall crystallization rate and the glass transition temperature are also affected. It is generally believed that the improvement of properties of nanoclay composites is directly related to the complete exfoliation of silicate layers in the polymer matrix. However, a processing technique that produces complete exfoliation is still a technical challenge [1,2]."

PT. Smelting Co. was established in February, 1996 to construct and operate the Gresik Smelter and Refinery. The construction work of first Copper Smelter and Refinery in Indonesia was completed in the end of August, 1998 and it was put into the integrated test operation in December, 1998. Gresik Smelter and Refinery is designed to produce 200,000 tpy of copper cathode from copper concentrate supplied from Grasberg Mine of PT. Freeport Indonesia Company in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. As by product 592,000 tpy of sulfuric acid, 382,000 tpy of slag, 31,000 tpy of gypsum and 480 tpy of slime will be produced in the full operation. Minor components and flux additions can modify the liquidus temperatures of multicomponent slags. In industrial practice, slags with various levels of minor components require various flux additions in order to achieve the lowest possible liquidus temperature The prediction and the optimization of these combinations can decrease the cost of the overall process. In this work the effect of several minor components and flux additions such as Al2O3, MgO, and CaO, on the liquidus temperatures of multicomponent iron-silicate slags has been analyzed in terms of a thermodynamic model Various simple isothermal and non-isothermal diagrams are presented. These diagrams can be used directly by the process operators to define the optimum conditions under which the fluxes can be used to achieve the desired slag liquidus temperatures.

A common objective in many Cu/Zn concentrators is to reduce the loss of Zn to the Cu-concentrate. One suspected source of the problem is accidental activation of sphalerite by heavy metal ions such as lead. One method of quantifying surface metal ion concentration is extraction with ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetate (EDTA). This was used to survey Cu-rougher flotation at three Cu/Zn concentrators: Les Mines Selbaie, Falconbridge&apos;s Kidd Creek division, and Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Although all have less than 0.2% galena in the ore, Pb ions proved an abundant extractable metal. From a laboratory study a model of surface coverage of lead species generated by an ore was combined with an estimate of surface concentration of lead required to activate sphalerite to explore the possibility of accidental activation. Ores with Pb-grade as low as 0.1% can produce sufficient Pb to be a potential problem.

The optimization of the plutonium electrorefining process has been studied on the basis of modeling and model materials. The plutonium electrorefining process has been reviewed and the basics of the electrorefining process with molten salts as electrolytes and under forced convection has been presented. The definition of the problem in plutonium electrorefining has been related to three factors and this research has addressed these three factors to provide an insight to this process. The hydrodynamic factor gives information on the behavior of the mechanically stirred system. The chemical stability and solidification factor shows the interactions among the components of the electrorefining cell. The electrochemical factor is oriented to study the efficiency of the electrorefining process on the basis of limiting current density, stirring rate and configuration cell. As a result of this study the optimization of plutonium electrorefining implies mainly a re-design of the cell.

A characteristic feature of the macrokinetics of the interaction process is the presence of two specifically defined areas of oxidation which had a linear time dependence. The effect of variables, such as residual sulphur content of the melt, temperature and the oxidation potential of the gas phase, on the macrokinetics of oxidation are investigated. Phase composition and structure of products of solidification of partially oxidised melts and thermodynamic properties pentaining to Cu-S-O melts are used to analyze the macrokinetic behaviour and mechanisms of the interaction. The process of interaction of sulfide copper melts with oxygen may be considered as a disproportional absorption process and its mechanism is based on localized interaction on the surface and inside the melt volume. Superficial processes include also the process of primary chemisorption of oxygen by melts at place of metal-metal donor bonds proceeding with formation of oxysulfide liquid solutions and volumetric decomposition of the latter accompanied by evolution of sulfur dioxide and metallization of sulfide melts. It is the degree of dynamic balance of such interaction processes that determines specific individual features of the macro-kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of sulfide copper solutions with oxygen in the gas phase.

Fe-Ga alloys, with compositions around 27.5 at % Ga, can be heat treated to obtain ? (ordered bcc), DO19 (ordered hexagonal), and L12 (ordered fcc) ordered structures. Our earlier work using polycrystalline samples had shown that magnetostriction is strongly influenced by ordering in this alloy. Here more detailed study of the correlation between ordering and magnetostriction using single crystals of Fe 27.5 at. % Ga alloys is reported. Single crystals of Fe 27.5 at % Ga were grown using Bridgman single crystal growth technique. X-ray and electron diffraction were used to study the ordering in this alloy. Magnetostriction measurements were carried out at no load conditions. Elastic constants were measured using Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy.

This paper discusses briefly the major reasons associated with the growth and its impact on the energy requirement and Environmental imbalance. A projection based on the present global Alumina and Al requirement indicate a substantial further growth of at least 30% over the next 10 years. It is indicated that the main factors which are likely to influence investments are the environmental factors such as the Climate Change and global response to the growing energy prices and sustainable development. Each of the developed / developing nations must find response to the GHG emissions which will encourage the Al Industry to make an effective contribution to global warming while preserving the international competitiveness of the industry - a challenging task. The efforts shall concentrate on improving energy efficiency in the industry possibly of the order of 25% over the next 10 to 20 years. The developments in this line are discussed.

Natural rubber/organophilic clay nanocomposites were prepared and characterized. A brown bentonite from Paraiba’s State, Brazil was modified with a sodium salt and treated with quaternary ammonium salt hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride. The clay in its natural state, after cation exchange with sodium and after organophilization was characterized by XRD, IR, SEM, thermal analysis. Nanocomposite samples were prepared containing 10 resin percent of organophilic clay. The vulcanized samples were analyzed by XRD, SEM. The nanocomposites obtained showed improvement in their mechanical properties in comparison with samples without clay.

In carboxylate collector flotation of bastnasite from other semisoluble salt type minerals such as barite various modifiers must be added in order to achieve selective flotation. One such modifier is a lignin sulfonate. It may function in part by acting as a sequestrant for metal ions present, preventing autoactivation in the system by metal ions derived from the minerals themselves. It also functions as a depressant for both bastnasite and barite, chemisorbing on both. However, it is shown that the lignin sulfonate functions as a much stronger depressant for barite than for bastnasite. It is suggested that the; strong depressing action on barite is related to a good fit of the sulfonate into the barite structure.

The first phase in the design, development and implementation of a comprehensive computational model of a copper stockpile leach process is presented. The model accounts for transport phenomena through the stockpile, reaction kinetics for the important mineral species, oxygen and bacterial effects on the leach reactions, plus heat, energy and acid balances for the overall leach process. The paper describes the formulation of the leach process model and its implementation in PHYSICA+, a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software environment. The model draws on a number of phenomena to represent the competing physical and chemical features active in the process model. The phenomena are essentially represented by a three-phase (solid-liquid-gas) multi-component transport system; novel algorithms and procedures are required to solve the model equations, including a methodology for dealing with multiple chemical species with different reaction rates in ore represented by multiple particle size fractions. Some initial validation results and application simulations are shown to illustrate the potential of the model.

Nanocrystalline mixtures of Nd2Fe14B and a-Fe have been synthesized by mechanical milling and heat treatment. The samples exhibit isotropic behavior, with significant remanence enhancement associated with exchange coupling across the interfaces of hard and soft magnetic phases. Measurements of the effect of heat treatment on structure and magnetic behavior demonstrate the important influence of grain size on magnetic properties. The effect of alloy additions to increase the saturation magnetization of the soft phase and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the hard phase has also been investigated.

Austenitization is a critical stage in heat treatment of steels. The available kinetic data in reference to various initial microstructures are very limited, particularly at high heating rates. In this study, integrated experimental and computational approaches have been conducted to quantify the progress of austenitization and the attained microstructure. In particular, the study is concentrated on cementite and carbide dissolution in two steel grades. Various computational methods are developed to facilitate the study: (l) an algorithm for direct determination of kinetics data as well as progress of transformation from high-rate dilatometer tests; and (2) a suite of mesoscale computational models for particle dissolution, elements diffusion, mechanics, thermodynamic and the resulting kinetics of transfonnation. Critical exprimentation is carried out using advanced techniques in microstructure characterization, chemical analysis, and Gleeble thermal-mechanical simulator on specimens of well-controlled initial microstructures. We prepared the water dispersed with Au particles ranging from 10 to 20 nm size by a novel wet chemical synthesis; generating seeds of Au cluster by adding a borane dimethylamine complex into chloroaureic acid (gold salt) solution, and then growing simultaneously with aminoalcohol included in the solution. As-prepared Au nano-particles with chemical surface modification were found to have some attractive performances, i.e., showing a high dispersiveness in an aqueous solution in a long time, sintering nano-particles at low temperature, and having low resistivity in the film prepared from nano-particles. In the case that smaller Au nano-particles were removed from as-prepared colloid, especially, Au thin film formed on the surface of Si plate showed the excellent value of 7.0x10-6ohm cm (reference peculiar resistance: 2.35x10-6 ohm cm).The sintering temperature was dependent on the elimination of 2-aminoethanol that modified on the surface of Au nano-particles.

The Polish copper concentrates are characterised by low content of sulphur and iron. At KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. two copper production technologies are in use. The shaft furnace process is used at the Legnica Copper Smelter and the Glogów I Copper Smelter. A single-stage direct to blister Outokumpu flash smelting process is used at the- Glogów II Copper Smelter. Melting copper concentrates in the shaft furnaces is carried out in a reducing atmosphere and the product obtained is a matte. Instead, a result of melting copper concentrates by an oxidising flash process blister copper of a quality similar to that of converter copper is obtained. The annual copper production at KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. exceeds 450,000 tons. Another important metal is silver produced from slimes from copper electrolysis (about 1000 t/y). Moreover, such metals as Pb, Ni, Se, As, Au and other precious metals, including Pt and Pd, are recovered from various semiproducts. This paper presents technological flow sheet of the copper production in plants using the shaft furnaces and in another plant in which a single-state flash process is applied. Characteristics of products, methods of their utilisation, main parameters of particular technological operations, and advantages and shortcomings of the solution applied are presented. There are also discussed: the natural environment protection as well as directions of the KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. plants modernisation.

The fibrous precursor can be obtained by coordination precipitation process, using oxalate, cobalt chloride and ammonia. XRD pattern of precursor precipitated at pH=9.0 is different from that of ß-CoC2O4?2H2O precipitated at pH=1.0 which indicates that the precursor powders are one type of cobalt complex. According to the results of element analysis and IR spectra, it can be inferred that the composition of the precursor is [Co(NH3)x]C2O4?H2O(x=1.2?..6) formed by the coordination reaction at pH=9.00 in the Co(II)-C2O42--NH3-NH4+-H2O system. It?s found that the fibrous cobalt powders greatly inherited the morphologies of the precursors. Many factors could affect the formation of the fibrous cobalt precursor powders, such as the initial Co2+concentration, pH value and so on. The SEM images show how they influence the morphologies of the precursor powders. By adding proper surfactant, the dispersion of the precursor powders would be improved. At last, the final product-fibrous cobalt powders which are about 0.3~0.5min size and 40~60 in aspect ratio were produced by thermal decomposition of fibrous cobalt complex at 400~500°C in the weak reducing atmosphere.

Managers are frequently faced with the decision to perform a task or manufacture an object in-house or to hire an outside vendor to perform the function. Outsourcing decisions are usually driven by economics: work is outsourced if it can be completed at a lower cost or in a shorter time than it can in-house. A technique termed incremental analysis can be used to make this decision. Incremental analysis examines the financial impact of outsourcing decisions as a function of the firm&apos;s fixed and variable operating costs. To use this tool, individual components of production cost are identified as being either constant or varying with levels of production activity. The assignment of cost type can be made in several ways: though analysis of historical operating data, understanding of individual expense types, and so forth. Changes in fixed and variable costs resulting from each potential course of action are explicitly identified to project the financial outcome of each alternative. The alternative having the greatest positive impact on profit is selected for implementation. By using the fixed- and variable-cost framework, the analysis is conceptually straightforward and substantially simplified. Production managers can therefore use incremental analysis as a tool for fast economically beneficial decisions on a real-time basis.
