If an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM is operated effectively tunneling can be carried out producing negligible ground movements. Using the methods given in this paper face losses of the order of 0.5% and less are generally obtainable using an EPB. Operating the EPB TBM in this manner reduces the requirement for the building protection measures used to protect surface structures. This can result in a considerable cost saving for the construction of a tunnel under built up areas. This paper to give guidance on the causes of ground movements around a TBM and the methods of running an EPB TBM that will minimize those movements. Details of how this was successfully done during the construction of the Bangkok Metro are given. INTRODUCTION Countries that are currently developing their mineral potential have unique information systems requirements to support these activities. The mining laws usually grant the State considerable authority over the process. In many instances, the mining laws give a government agency the responsibility for granting and controlling exploration permits and development concessions. This is the case in Costa Rica. The Direcion of Geologia, Minas, y Hidrocarburos (DGMH) of the Ministerio de Industria, Energia y Minas (MIEM) is responsible for the management and operation of the National Mining Register. This paper describes the results of two studies of the information system requirements to support the National Mining Registry as well as those supporting some of the other function of the DGMH. The first of the studies reviewed the situation before the installation of computer equipment. The second study evaluated the installed systems. BACKGROUND Historical Perspective Mining in Costa Rica is at present a relatively minor part of the economy. It consists primarily of industrial minerals and gold production. Gold production is largely by small-scale miners and may be more substantial than reported. There is considerable interest on the part of the Government in both having a better understanding of the existing mining industry and promoting future development. Mining law was first provided by the Ordinanza de Mineral (of 1830). This was replaced by the first Mining Code of 1953. Apparently, one of the first problems caused by the 1953 law was the granting of concessions which were not worked. A 1968 agreement with ALCOA also resulted in political conflict. The Government worked on a new Mining Code for many years and in 1982 the current Mining Code was enacted. Draft implementing regulations were prepared in April 1984. Mining Code of 1982 The Mining Code of 1982 addresses most aspects of mining in Costa Rica including the declaration that all mineral resources are to be the property of the State. The State may grant exploration permits and exploitation permits. The exploitation of hydrocarbons, radioactive minerals and certain water resources was reserved to the state. The DGMH was given authority to settle placer claim disputes, maintain a registry of exploration permits, and exploitation concessions. and generally supervise mining activity. Towards this, the Mining Code of 1982 includes rather detailed requirements for the processing of application for permits and concessions. Mining Code Application Requirements The following briefly describes the requirements to give the reader a feeling for the complexity of the process. Currently, over 1,000 active applications, exploration permits and exploitation concessions are being monitored under the process. The number remains relatively consistent in that the number of new applications is usually about the same as the applications that are put aside. The time and date of the filing must be certified by the DGMH. The application must include all the information specified in the Mining Code. If incomplete, DGMH must notify the applicant of the deficiencies or omissions and direct that the applicant correct the deficiencies or omissions within 8 business days (a single 30 business-day extension is allowable). If the applicant does not respond as directed, the application is deemed as not having been filed and the pertinent information is placed in the files. The DGMH must reject the application outright and direct it be placed in the files in the following cases: (a). If the new application covers the area of a previous permit or concession, either being processed or already granted.

Never known as a conference to shy away from its share of off-color jokes, the Colorado Mineral Processing Division?s Annual Meeting returned to the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, CO April 26-28 for its 62nd edition, this one held under the theme ?Does size matter (is bigger always better).? With the predictable jokes sprinkled in here and there, and a few unpredictable ones as well, the three-day conference featured a healthy mix of talks about some of the latest technical developments in the field of mineral processing, as well as insightful looks at some new operations in the western United States. This year, the Colorado MPD also launched the Wagner Equipment Student Scholarship program.

PolyMet Mining is developing the NorthMet property near Duluth, Minnesota. Laboratory investigations had led to the development of the PLATSOL process to dissolve in one step the base metals (copper and nickel) as well as the gold and PGM’s. To complete the pre-feasibility study, a fully integrated ten-day pilot plant trial was undertaken, comprising of: high temperature (>220ºC) pressure oxidation in the presence of 5-10 g/L chloride (the PLATSOL process), followed by solid/liquid separation, gold plus PGM’s recovery from solution, conventional Cu SX/EW and recycling of the copper raffinate to the autoclave. The concentrate tested was a NorthMet bulk flotation concentrate assaying 14.7% Cu, 3.05% Ni, 0.14% Co, 26.7% S, 1.4 g/t Au, 2.2 g/t Pt and 9.9 g/t Pd. Laboratory results were fully confirmed and with minor adjustments of the laboratory PLATSOL® conditions, the following leach extractions were obtained during the pilot plant trial: Cu 99.6%, Ni 98.9%, Co 96%, Pd 94.6%, Pt 96% and Au 89.4%.

HIGH SPEED RAILWAY NETWORK Spain is a very adequate country to develop the high speed railway network thank to its geographical feature which has a 600km long radius, from Madrid- the capital that covers mostly the whole country. Therefore, the railway is a major competitor of the airline. In Spain, the new access to the north and northwest is nowadays the most important railway project which will allow a significant saving of time in the near future to the central plateau and the northern territories. Time savings as well as strict environmental considerations have been the main objective of various studies during the last decade leading to Guadarrama and Pajares tunnels as ones of the optimum solutions. Cordoba-Malaga high speed railway, the extension of the present Madrid—Sevilleline, through the Abdalajis range and the rail project to cross oriental Pyrenees between Spain and France are another two samples of large tunnels currently underway. In these four projects, the ground already encountered and to be soon encountered is highly variable, from very hard granite and gneiss in Guadarrama and Pertus to very poor argillite in Abdalajis, shale in Pajares and schist in Pertus. A number of faults are also expected. Hence, double shield hard rock TBM has been chosen. Figure 1 shows a general scheme in four projects. These four projects represent a total of 2 × 68 km of which 87 km are under DRAGADOS contracts. PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY DRAGADOS Guadarrama Tunnels This project is the longest twin tunnel with 28.377km, in Spain and considered one of the longest in Europe. The operating speed will be 300 km/h. This tunnel will link Madrid and the north territories through Guadarrama range. (Figure 2). The south portal is placed at el. 997.8m above the sea level. The tunnel starts with an inclination of 3‰, increasing until 15‰. After 6,620m length, the tunnel passes under the Morcuera ridge with an overburden of 960m. After 13,400m length, the elevation is 1,024m which is the highest point, and then the tunnel declines with a slope of 9.5‰, 2‰ and 19‰ until the north portal in Segovia province. The mining industry has had three difficult years. Commodity prices have remained low and investor confidence in the industry has been shaken. And even though the Asian economy appears to be improving, it will be some time before this improvement will translate into better commodity price conditions for mining. In addition, increased environmental and social restrictions that have been placed on the industry in developed and developing countries have made mining a more difficult proposition. And, if that is not enough, the global mining industry has found itself in fierce competition with Internet businesses for investor capital. Despite that gloomy picture, more than 10,500 mining industry professionals from about 70 countries gathered in Toronto, Ontario March 5-10, 2000 for the Mining Millennium 2000 conference. This meeting was a joint effort between the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum(CIM) and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).The joint meeting also featured two trade exhibitions and more than 150speakers. PDAC’s trade show attracted about 400 exhibitors and an additional 200 in the concurrent Investors’ Exchange. CIM’s exhibition attracted about 600 equipment and service companies.

Federal standards for refuge alternatives (RAs) mandate that they not exceed a Steadman apparent temperature (AT) of 95 °F (35 °C) at an assumedmetabolic rate of 325W, a limit that appears to be arbitrary. Occupants in an RA spend most of their time at rest (a metabolic rate less than 325 W), and thermal equilibrium can likely be maintained at an AT > 35 °C. The purpose of this study was to examine the upper limit of sustainable heat stress during 4- and 8-h exposures at rest. Five men underwent five 4-h trials (phase 1: AT range 39 to 49 °C, 90% rh) and five 8-h trials (phase 2: AT range 46 to 56 °C, 90% rh) in a semi-recumbent position. Descriptive statistics for gastrointestinal temperature (Tgi), heart rate (HR), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), sweat rate, fluid intake, urine color, urine specific gravity (USG), and changes in body mass are reported. Mean Tgi for all trials ranged from 36.9 to 37.3 °C, and mean HR for all trials ranged from 61 to 75 bpm. To determine the effects of increased heat exposure, differences in heat strain between 4- and 8-h trials were examined via repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). As AT increased, there were no significant changes in ?Tgi and ?HR from 1 to 4 h in the 4-h and 8-h trials. During the 8-h trials, as AT increased, there was a difference in ?Tgi between 4 and 8 h. In conclusion, there was support for sustainable exposures resulting in no significant increase in physiological strain at an AT greater than 35 °C AT, with a sustainable limit (no increases in Tgi due to increases in AT) below 46 °C AT. Although the participants were not representative of coal miners, the results provide support for sustainable exposures greater than 35 °C AT at an average metabolic rate of 155 W.

According to the analysis of surface powered haulage accidents involving off-highway haul trucks in openpit mining, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), reported 1,300 fatal accidents from 1990 to 2005. Of these, 163 were considered off-highway truck haulage accidents, and at least 23 involved collisions of an off-highway truck with a neighboring vehicle or a worker on foot (Nieto and Dagdelen, 2006). In general, an average of 18 nonfatal accidents and three fatal accidents occurred in openpit mining per year when equipment backed over the edge of an embankment, stockpile or dump point (Fessak, et al., 2003). The specific problems that need to be solved can be determined by carefully studying the accidents involving haulage trucks (Marrara, et al., 2004). Solutions to haulage truck safety must consider the human factors affecting each task even when engineering solutions seem most appropriate. In surface haulage, human performance becomes a critical issue because of the unusual demand the vehicle?s places on their human operators: ? Roadways and working areas change frequently in mining operations. ? The sheer mass of mining equipment such as trucks requires control inputs (e.g., braking) far in advance of the desired action. ? Rough roads, loading and unloading impacts can subject the driver to dangerous shocks and vibration. ? Visibility is sharply curtailed by the bulk of the vehicle generating large blind spots. All of the above issues can be attributed partially to the lack of visibility (Pyles et al., 2003). Driver visibility and communications are key issues to reduce mining truck accidents. Analysis of fatalities and injuries involving mining equipment demonstrates the need to develop new intervention and control strategies to mitigate the risks associated with mining equipment operation. Ongoing development of these and other new strategies is required to achieve a reduction of injury in the mining industry

"The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Nordic Ocean Resources AS, with support from Statoil ASA have carried out a project reviewing the knowledge about seabed mineral resources in Norway to identify and prioritize needs for further research and development.A special focus area in the project has been to increase the knowledge of possible massive sulfide mineralizations along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This Ridge is a subsea mountain range which separates the Eurasian and the North American continental plates. In this area, seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) are formed from the volcanic and hydrothermal activities along the Ridge. A large part of the North-Atlantic Mid-Atlantic Ridge between Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen is located on the Norwegian shelf.Analysis and interpretations of multibeam data have been carried out by NTNU in cooperation with the Russian Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Oceans in order to disclose relevant areas for the formation of SMS deposits. This analysis has identified several promising areas."

The proposed 1.83km long twin bore A3 Hindhead road tunnel planned for contruction in 2008 is being delivered under a Highways Agency Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract. The proposed construction methodology is progressive mechanical excavation of a horseshoe shaped tunnel with shotcrete installed close behind the face using robotic spraying equipment. The tunneling medium is a ‘soft rock’ sandstone for which there was little previous tunneling experience, requiring extensive geotechnical investigations and an innovative approach to lining design. A 240m long portal section though sandy material utilising a steel pipe umbrella is also required. This paper describes the development of the tunnel planning and design including the most recent developments in UK road tunnels, and the innovation included in the ‘permanent’ primary lining design.

The primary advantage of using oxalic acid is in the formation during leaching of soluble complexes that are both photo-chemically and microbiologically degradable. In this study, chemical leaching and bioleaching methods were used for quartz sand. Using the ANOVA-Yates test technique, the effects of solids rate, temperature and oxalic acid rate were investigated using chemical leaching experiments. Solids rate and temperature were effective parameters on the chemical leaching. After the tests, the removal of Fe2O3 increased to 97.02%. Finally, the iron content decreased from 0.315% Fe2O3 to 0.0094% Fe2O3 in the leached quartz sand. The effect of pulp density was investigated on the bioleaching experiments. The bioleaching of iron oxides by Aspergillus niger resulted in removal of 47.70% of the total iron in the quartz sand, and suggested that this strain has not a good ability to remove iron impurities from quartz sand in comparison with chemical leaching. The iron content decreased from 0.315% Fe2O3 to 0.164% Fe2O3 in the bioleached quartz sand.

The New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) was the first major water supply tunnel for New York City. The 50-km (31-mi) long tunnel has 33 open shafts 6 m (20 ft) to 121 m (397 ft) deep. The tunnel and shafts are lined with brick and mortar, with cast iron lining and pressure covers in six pressurized shafts. Details of the 1895 construction are provided and compared to modern construction techniques. The paper provides rehabilitation techniques for the shafts and pressure covers, including grouting, epoxy lining, temporary bulkhead design and installation and placement of tremie concrete 98 m (320ft) below the water level in a 122 m (400ft)deep shaft using a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) to monitor the placement.

Since its discovery, Cuba has been called the “Pearl of the Antilles.” The country remains that, albeit a little tarnished these days. In Havana, many of the buildings are being refurbished, while some new ones are under construction. Since 1991, the laws have been relaxed so that Cuba is developing a mixed economy of central control with free market. Joint venture agreements have been signed with businesses from many countries. This does not include the United States due to its embargo. But even these regulations have been relaxed some.

The Georgia kaolin district is the world’s largest producer of kaolin. Georgia production tripled from 2.87 Mt (3.17 million st) in 1968 to8.35 Mt (9.2 million st) in 1998. Development of the Georgia kaolin industry can be traced to the identification of the mineral resource, the adoption of innovative process technologies and the creation of markets for kaolin. Georgia kaolin is an abundant and high-quality resource that shows a range of advantageous properties. Technical developments in wet processing, delamination and calcination allowed production of high-value products. The use of kaolin pigments in the paper industry provided a market that absorbed the rapid growth in kaolin production.

In 1985, participants of the multi-year Illinois Mine Subsidence Research Program conducted surveys of subsidence effects on crop production from current high-extraction mining methods, selected a site to characterize the profile, strain, fracture development in overburden materials and changes in aquifers produced by subsidence from high-extraction mining, characterized floor materia1 s in three mines, and established bibliographic reference and data base files. The Illinois State Geological Survey, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals and Twin Cities Research Center of the U. S. Bureau of Mines are coordinating State and Federally funded research.

Deep-sea mineral SMS deposits present some of the world’s most challenging conditions for drilling equipment. As robotic seabed drilling services mature so too the ways that clients engage with service providers to maximise their data requirements. This presentation reviews key considerations for planning and executing a successful seabeddrilling program in variable mineralised deposits. Some of the means of collaboration between robotic seabed drilling contractors and those hiring their services are explored; where improved efficiencies and recoveries over the period of a drilling programme could be achieved. Potentially new technology or methodology can be looked at to further improve these approaches.

Part of a major sewer expansion for the City of Columbus, Ohio. The Big Walnut Outfall Augmentation Sewer (BWOAS) consists of 4,000m (13,200 ft) of 3.66m (12 ft)diameter tunnel passing mainly through glacial deposits with a water head of up to 2 bar. The project involves many new innovations, including: Slurry wall work shaft with excavation below the water table; Hybrid universal rings combining traditional steel reinforcement with fibers; New, full EPB Lovat TBM; Two component grout system pumped to the TBM from the surface; and, Linabond corrosion protection liner. The paper looks at the planning approach adopted to meet the various challenges presented, combined with an overview of progress to date.

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. A precious metals refinery’s switch to personal computer-based, three-dimensional piping design saved many hours in the design of a South African precious metals refinery. Bateman Minerals and Industrial provided engineering, procurement and construction management services for Impala Platinum Limited-Refineries’ new $60 million refinery in Springs, South Africa. This project is one of the largest platinum refineries in the world. Bateman evaluated a new design method during this project that involved developing a three-dimensional model for the project. The new method saved time by reducing the man-hours required to generate complete project documentation, including plans, sections, isometrics and material takeoffs. The new method also saved design and construction time by allowing designers to detect clashes before construction began.

The Tren Urbano project in Puerto Rico includes a 19 m diameter tunnel constructed by the stacked drift method, which involves installation of a pre-supported concrete arch using multiple tunnels. Geotechnical conditions consisted of weak rock and highly weathered, unstable alluvial soils. Due to low cover, reinforcement of the arch was required. Ground behavior ranged from firm ground to mixed-face to raveling and flowing ground. Consequently, construction of the individual drifts involved many different soft-ground techniques such as steel set supports, shotcrete support, shield tunneling, forepoling, and consolidation grouting. During construction, the design was modified to improve constructability. Although settlement was experienced during excavation of the drifts, arch movements were within predicted limits and minimal surface settlement was observed upon excavation of the interior.
