"Twin bored tunnels are commonly used for a variety of road and tunnel projects throughout the world.A major component of these twin tunnel projects is the construction of connecting cross passages that provide emergency access between tunnels and space for tunnel service equipment. Cross passages can present significant geotechnical risk and technical challenges to a project – support systems must be considered for redistributing loads around the mainline tunnel openings and supporting new loading resulting from excavation activities. Additionally, cross passages pose risks to construction schedule and cost because of their sequencing at the end of construction, so mitigation of schedule overruns can be critical. By observing field instrumentation data records from completed projects, a better understanding of the force development in each temporary structure can be achieved with indication of which structures are the most critical to support ground loads.This article discusses the data obtained during the Brisbane Airport Link construction project, a road tunnel located in Brisbane, Australia. Strain gauge instrumentation data from the precast segmental lining and propped opening steel sets is presented with relation to the construction sequence and local geology. Interpretations and conclusions based on the observed trends are proposed, with several key mechanisms affecting the loading and unloading identified.Brisbane Airport Link project overview. The Brisbane Airport Link project in Brisbane, Australia, connects central Brisbane to the airport located northeast of the downtown with more than 7 km (4 miles) of twin-bore road tunnels, two lanes each, with several caverns, interchanges and access ramps constructed along the alignment to connect to other key routes in the city. The project was executed under a public-private partnership (P3) scheme, funded and operated by the consortium BrisConnections. The main contractors were a joint venture of John Holland and Theiss, while the design was carried out by Arup and Parsons Brinckerhoff.Construction of the tunnels was conducted using a combination of 17 roadheaders and two 12.5-m (41-ft) double-shield Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines (TBM) (Harding & Francis, 2013). The TBMs were used in earth pressure balance- (EPB) type closed mode for the initial portion of their drive, starting at the northeast end of the alignment. Tunneling started in soft ground, weathered rock, and mixed face conditions initially, progressing to competent sedimentary rocks as the drive continued. Support was accomplished using a 12.1-m (39.8-ft) diameter steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) segmental lining installed behind the TBMs in nine segments + one key arrangement. The innovative design of these segments is detailed in the paper by Harding and Francis (Harding & Francis, 2013). Ancillary roads and underground interchange caverns were constructed by sequential excavation techniques using roadheaders, accounting for nearly half of the total underground excavations."

Minimizing the effects of corrosion improves the long-term performance of the rock anchors and ground control systems in underground mines, which is fundamental for safe operation over the design period. The primary objective of this study is to explain the problems due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), strain-induced corrosion cracking (SICC) and other forms of corrosion, and why the mining industry’s ground control professionals should take this into serious consideration. It is important to clearly determine the kind of SCC mechanisms that causes roof bolt failures in order to suggest the necessary action plan to mitigate or eliminate the possibility of the cause. Pertinent literature and studies around the globe on this complicated subject are reviewed. The secondary objective is to encourage the use of corrosion-resistant ground control products in the underground mining industry in areas of high corrosion potential. Characteristics of SCC on high strength steel are also reviewed. The literature and preliminary studies to date indicate that research work is necessary in United States.

In response to the Natural Resources Canada “Crush It Challenge,” Corem partnered with the University of British Columbia and led a project to develop and demonstrate the use of high-pressure grinding to replace the workhorse of the industry, wet ball milling. Two plant case studies, a small tonnage gold recovery operation and a large tonnage copper recovery operation, were carried out. Plant circuit performances were compared to pilot plants operated on the same circuit feed setup to represent the novel equipment and flowsheet that was developed to produce separation circuit feed. Numerous obstacles to industrial implementation of high-pressure grinding in this role which were recognized at the outset of the work were successfully addressed. In both cases, comminution equipment energy savings alone and final stage total circuit energy savings exceeded 60% and 50%, respectively. Downstream mineral separation performance was the same or better.

Optimizing and adjusting the particle size composition of grinding products is of great significance for improving economic benefits and resource recovery and utilization. In this study, grinding contribution and quantitative separation of impact and grinding mechanism in cylindrical mill were creatively researched, and the grinding technical efficiency of impact and grinding was coupled to the grinding technical efficiency of grinding in drop-off mode. The results showed that the contribution rate of impact and grinding in grinding in drop-off mode varied with the grinding time. On the whole, the contribution rate of impact action increases with the grinding time and gradually becomes stable, and the contribution rate of grinding effect was just the opposite. Under the experimental conditions, the main contribution of the grinding process is impact action, and the contribution of grinding action is auxiliary. In addition, the contribution rate of impact and grinding effect in grinding in drop-off mode was also related to the feed particle size. The contribution rate of impact effect decreased with the decrease of feed particle size, while the contribution rate of grinding increased inversely.

Design of chain pillars in a longwall mine setting is one of the main engineering controls on the global and local stability of the mine. Challenges with roof instabilities, floor heaves, and pillar failures can be alleviated, to some extent, by careful design of gateroad configurations and chain pillars. This work investigates three different alternative designs in a three-entry-system gateroad configuration with an inter-panel barrier in a longwall mine in Virginia. Starting with the current design, which has faced challenges such as excessive floor heave, a geomechanical model developed in 3DEC software is validated by monitoring in-situ pillar stress in the yield, abutment, and barrier pillars in the mine. Next, three different chain pillar designs are evaluated in the model with a focus on roof sagging, floor heave, and pillar average stress. Results show the relationships among the alternative designs and instabilities associated with roof, pillar, and floor in the study mine, providing insights for optimizing longwall mining designs in deep-cover settings.

TBMand roadheader are two dominating excavation machines in underground tunnelling projects. The performance of these two tunnelling machines has been reviewed and analysed individually by many researchers from multiple points of view. However, there are almost no studies that have made an extensive comparison between these two machines, mostly from financial points of view. The current study is intended to characterize both financial and technical status of these two mechanical tunnelling machines in one of the biggest coal mines in Iran. The main objective of this study is to define the best method and equipment that meets a predefined economic goal, which is mainly to maximize the net present value. To this end, a technical and financial model based on the geomechanical and financial parameters involved in the project has been prepared and the financial part of the project has been carried out by applying COMFAR III financial analysis software. Subsequently, a sensitivity analysis of the model was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of involved parameters on the project. According to the results, a roadheader has better economic justification than a TBM, while the TBM has a better advance rate than the roadheader.

In flotation practices, as particles become finer, such as smaller than 20 μm, process efficiency declines markedly. Selective agglomeration of fine particles is a technique to enhance the recovery of fine valuable minerals in flotation circuits. Different agglomerating methods have been introduced and tested. One method that has recently received much attention is to make use of magnetic force to aggregate fine particles. A selective aggregation of fine paramagnetic particles, such as sulfide minerals, can be achieved in the high-intensity magnetic field prior to or during flotation. The method is simple, selective and effective for fine particles and has low operational cost, though a minimum magnetic susceptibility for fine grains is required to promote the process. In this paper, the implementation of the ProFlote magnetic conditioning device in Boliden’s Garpenberg old concentrator in Sweden, where a complex massive sulfide ore is treated, is presented and discussed based on Boliden’s Garpenberg plant. The results showed an increase in the flotation recovery of fine valuable minerals. Zinc (Zn) production was increased by between 1,100 and 1,500 t/a, while salable yearly silver (Ag) production was increased by 1,500 kg. The copper (Cu) grade in the final concentrate was increased by 1 percent, while reductions in its Zn and lead (Pb) grades were obtained. Construction of Boston’s C11A1 Section of the Central Artery (I-93)/Tunnel(I-90) Project beneath the existing MBTA Red Line Subway at South Station required excavation to depths in excess of 33.5 m (110 ft) through permeable sand and gravel subject to almost 27.4 m (90 ft) of hydrostatic groundwater pressure. As tacked drift tunnel underpinning system was designed to provide positive support to the active station prior to mainline tunnel construction. As part of this system, a permeation grouting program was developed to facilitate tunnel excavation. This paper describes the design and implementation of the grouting program, in sit testing, and the overall performance of the grouted soil mass.

This paper highlights the use of an innovative mine production scheduling scheme for grade-control planning tasks that take into consideration grade-model uncertainty. The scheduling exercise has been carried out with the help of a multiobjective genetic algorithm (MOGa) for the production scheduling operations. The underlying motive behind the use of MOGa has been the generation of a set of pareto optimal solutions to meet the goals of the target-grade specifications for the considered multiple grade attributes. Several new concepts related to MOGa formulation, in particular the mutation operation and the convergence criteria of this algorithm, are proposed in this paper. The modeling of grade uncertainty into the scheduling outputs has also been incorporated through a set of conditional simulated grade maps. The proposed scheme of production scheduling operations has been applied for the grade-control planning operations in an iron ore mine to meet the targeted grade specifications of iron, silica and alumina, and a risk analysis has been performed to this end.

Evidently, Mr. Thayer had left it to Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway to work out the details The next morning Greenway asked me to come to his office and told me that he and Dr. Ricketts had discussed the question and that Anaconda would make me an offer I could not refuse. They proposed to pay me almost $1000 a month, more than twice my current salary. They had agreed that I should stay with Calumet and Arizona for the rest of the year to help with Bisbee development and anything I could to assist with the New Cornelia plans and construction Of course I could not turn down such a flattering offer, as I had about reached the limit of advancement with a much smaller company in anything save a high executive job, and it would be a long time before I could be ready to change from exploration and geology to operating. Greenway and I agreed that I would stay with him for the remaining eight months of 1916 without any particular title but helping in any way I thought would be most useful. Bisbee and Ajo Study It turned out to be a busy half year, in addition to many good times with my Bisbee friends. During the recent expansion of precipitate copper production at the Chino Mines Division of Kennecott Copper Corporation, Santa Rita, New Mexico, local studies of the dump leaching process were intensified. As these studies progressed it became apparent that a reliable method for locating leach solutions within the dump was required, since the contact between leach solutions and the copper-bearing material would determine, in great part, the recovery of values. In the past, the problem of determining leach solution contact has been attacked by various methods, including destructive testing (dump dissection), indirect observation (such as chloride or dye tracers), and mathematical or laboratory model studies. These methods have not proved completely satisfactory for the studies now being developed. Investigation of methods for in situ observation of leach solutions led to consideration of radiation logging in drill holes, which are petro¬leum exploration and development techniques for locating fluids and measuring porosity in the subsurface. Standard oil field logging equipment was leased, modified, and tested. After successful testing, the equipment was purchased for additional studies. Applications and results of the methods are described in this paper.

Industrial shale-oil operations in North America and Europe predated the Drake discovery, but, since then, most have succumbed to competition from petroleum. However, the existence of enormous oil-shale resources in the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming [estimated at over a trillion bbl of shale oil in place] and the advancement of United States oil- shale technology by research and development programs of government and industry during the past 15 years point to a natural partnership of petroleum and oil shale to meet the accelerating energy demands of the future. The utilization of oil shale is not a question of limited petroleum supplies, but one of economics. Two factors are expected to improve the economic outlook for industrial shale oil production -- a rise in petroleum replacement cost and further advances in oil-shale technology.

Research in the field of mining safety and health in the United States plays an important part in protecting the lives of miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program conducts surveillance, studies and developmental work aimed at improving the safety and health of miners. With recent reviews of the Mining Program by the National Academy of Sciences and the Mining Program response (NIOSH, 2008), the importance of setting goals, conducting high quality engineering and scientific research and evaluating the outputs, outcomes, relevance and impacts of these projects has been reemphasized. Surveillance of reported injuries is a first step in deciding on research directions and in designing specific projects. Groups of injuries often share features and attributes that suggest common causes and may respond to similar preventive efforts. Identifying groups of injuries also serves to prioritize intervention efforts. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Accident and Injury database (MSHA, 2008) provides individual case reports of mining injuries, illnesses and certain no-injury accidents (events such as roof falls that stop mine production or miners’ activities for more than one hour). This database is an indispensable resource for researchers and stakeholders needing information on the statistics of these events. From an epidemiological perspective, research projects target groups of miners at risk due to specific patterns of work, equipment, mine settings and the management of safety and health in their mines. Incidence rates are provided by the MSHA data for selected variables, such as surface/underground location, standard industrial classification and state. While incidence rates are the preferred measure for all variables, denominators are not typically available; for example, to more clearly understand the data about injury by occupational type, it would be necessary to conduct demographic surveys. A current survey of the demographics of the mining industry should be complete by 2010, which will allow incidence rates to be developed for a number of variables such as age, occupation and experience. This survey will provide the first update of its kind since the first survey was conducted in 1985. This report describes an alternative method of analyzing and presenting MSHA data for the purpose of identifying high-cost, high-severity injuries and illnesses. Researchers at the NIOSH Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) developed programs to find the top five most frequent accident classes, natures of injury, types of accidents and other selected variables from the MSHA database. Studying these variables gives a cross-sectional snapshot of the most frequent groups of injuries within a commodity, regional group or time period, and allows researchers to quickly understand developing patterns for new research projects. Numerical simulations have been used to investigate roof fall in the past decades. Comparing to the continuum based methods, the discrete element method has been well recognized for its excellent performance in simulating large strain problems and fracturing processes in the rock mass. However, the discrete element method has its limitations. When simulating a large-scale problem, a large number of particles are required, which consumes significant computational resources. In the present study, a 3D numerical model coupled with the finite-difference method (FDM) and the discreteelement method (DEM) was created to simulate the laminated roof failure in an eastern coal mine in the US. In the FDM-DEM coupled model, the laminated roof of the entry is represented by an assembly of bonded particles using PFC3D. The laminated roof is simulated by adding parallel discontinuities. The discontinuities are given certain stiffness and strength in the model. The ribs, floor, and far-field surrounding rock are represented by continuum zones using FLAC3D. The strength of the discontinuities is varied sequentially and the fracturing of the laminated roof was analyzed with respect to entry advance. The results showed that the laminated roof fractures along the discontinuities while an intact roof fractures in a dome shape. Increasing the strength of discontinuity could enlarge the tensile zone inside the laminated roof and hence change the crack distribution. In addition, the crack quantity in the laminated roof behind the advancing face decreases with the increment of discontinuity strength while this trend is not occurring ahead of the advancing face. The simulation demonstrated that coupled method using PFC3D/FLAC3D can reproduce the laminated roof failure in underground coal mines.

The Henderson molybdenum mine, near Empire, CO, has operated since 1976 using a panel caving process and a rail haulage transportation system. After two decades of service, the rail haulage system required a substantial capital expenditure to improve operations. The timing for this worked well because Henderson was able to combine this capital need into a mine plan that addressed process bottlenecks and current mining practices as a new production level was designed and developed. This process was a logical step, following an equipment upgrade program, and became known as the Henderson 2000 project. One of the key components of Henderson 2000 is a new ore transportation system. Throughout Henderson's life, the bottleneck has been the rail haulage system. Henderson staff evaluated several transportation alternatives and decided on a truck haulage configuration feeding an underground crusher and conveyor system. This configuration will eliminate the haulage bottleneck and will allow the mine to increase capacity. The installation of this system will be completed by the year 2000. The second key component of Henderson 2000 is the development of a new 7175 production level to extract the lower reserves of the ore body. Henderson staff benchmarked other caving operations and compared their mining practices to Henderson's basic mining guidelines. It became apparent that Henderson's practices could become more efficient, particularly in the areas of drawpoint spacing and column heights. These concepts were incorporated into the layouts

Universities and colleges in three countries, Australia, Canada and the United States, recognized the need to establish and/or reorganize geoscience programs at the vocational and two-year technical levels. To accomplish this goal, a cooperative study with industry in one state or province from each country was initiated. These include 1) Tasmania, Australia, 2) British Columbia, Canada and 3) Alaska, United States. Over one hundred mineral industry organizations cooperated in the study by providing information regarding their specific training needs for support personnel. The data gathered has been used to identify training areas for semi-skilled, skilled and technical personnel in geochemical mineral exploration, including, but not limited to, geological skills, geochemical skills, environmental skills and computer skills. With the areas of major educational need defined for geochemical exploration, an educational field skills model has been developed for the three levels of training. The depth of each level of education and the training objectives for the work force at each level will be discussed.

Flotation of rutile with N-benzoyl-N-phenyl-hydroxylamine (N-BPHA) has been investigated. Initially, floatability tests were performed in a Hallimond tube. The results indicated that rutile was floatable in the pH range from 2 to 4 at N-BPHA concentration between 2x10-3 M and 2x10-2 M. Selectivity against hematite was recognized when operating at pH values below 2. Following the hypothesis of the formation of a surface chelate between N-BPHA and titanium ion, this compound was precipitated from a solution of Ti(SO4) to which N-BPHA was added. I.R. spectrometry oft the rutile before and after treatment with N-BPHA solution confirmed the presence on the rutile surface of the same compound. The absorption isotherm and kinetics were determined by analyzing N-BPHA in solution with an U.V. technique. A hypothesis for the mechanism of adsorption of N-BPHA on rutile is suggested.

Ensuring adequate ventilation is a critical aspect of safety in underground mining operations. In small-scale mines in particular, key ventilation parameters such as temperature, humidity, and air velocity are often measured manually and only at infrequent intervals, typically using analog instruments. As a result, real-time monitoring of environmental changes, timely detection of hazardous situations, and demand-driven ventilation control are not feasible. This presentation discusses the selection and evaluation of modern digital ventilation measurement devices, including handheld instruments with digital data logging capabilities and continuously operating sensors with potential for real-time data transmission. The investigations focus on the challenges posed by underground environments with extremely high humidity levels, which can adversely affect sensor performance and electronic components. The results are based on testing conducted at the Research and Teaching Mine of TU Bergakademie Freiberg—an underground ore mine characterized by humidity levels exceeding 95%. Findings include assessments of measurement accuracy, reliability, and practical applicability under these demanding conditions.

Within the Pofadder district of Namaqualand, South Africa, economically exploited deposits of bedded barite and zinc-lead-silver-copper sulfides occur in close proximity within highly metamorphosed mid-Proterozoic pre-tectonic para¬gneisses of the Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex (NMC) (figure i). The paragneisses belong to the Bushmanland Group (SACS, 1980) that comprises a relatively straight-forward regional sequence of basal leucogneisses, intermediate mica-sillimanite schists and glassy quartzites, and a mixed upper zone of banded iron formations (BIF), minor marbles, quartz muscovite schists and localised uppermost quartz-pebble conglomerates and amygdaloidal mafic gneisses (Joubert, 1974) (figure ii). The base metal and barite mineralisation occurs in close association with BIFs, generally above the glassy quartzites, although in some cases possibly below them. In the regional context, the Bushmanland Group paragneisses are, to the north, intercalated with and ultimately replaced by meta-volcanic sequences of talc-alkaline affinity (Reid, 1977) belonging to the Orange River Group (SACS, 1980). The metavolcanics are generally of acidic to intermediate composition and show evidence of subaerial formation from 'high altitude shield volcanism' with many acidic ashflow and welded tuff bands, mesocratic and lesser melanocratic lavas and some fanglomerates (Ritter, 1980). To the south and east, the schist/quartzite associations are initially intercalated with and eventually replaced by cordierite gneiss/metacarbonate/biotite gneiss associations of shallow marine affinity (Moore, 1980a). The Bushmanland Group paragneisses appear to represent sedimentary material in the extreme distal portions of a talc-alkaline volcanic environment adjacent to a shallow platform sea.
