In the course of time, an increasing number of investigations on jet cutting all kinds of material, such as rocks1, 2, 3, metals4, 5, and wood6 have been reported to serve various applications. This paper deals with one particular application of jets, viz deep-well drilling for hydrocarbon exploration and production. A number of papers have been published on this subject 7, 8, 9, some of which refer to jets purposely containing abrasives, termed 'jetted particle drilling'7. Since such abrasives complicate fluid handling considerably and do not appear to be absolutely necessary for making hole we have restricted ourselves to conventional drilling fluids. A large part of our investigation has been performed with the aid of three laboratory-type drilling machines, which permit tests on both micro-bits (12 in) and full-scale bits (62 - 9 5/8 in). In view of the application of jets in deep wells, care has been taken to simulate hydrostatic pressures as they exist in the field on the hole bottom. These have been found to have a major effect on the bit-penetration rate for various drilling fluids. Following experiments with single nozzles, laboratory bits have been designed, improved further and developed for field use. Field runs on 9 5/8 in bits, using conventional equipment and pumps, served to verify the feasibility of the jet drilling concept. Further efforts are evidently needed to evaluate the jet drilling method. It is encouraging that one of these10, a field test programme, is supported by a number of oil companies jointly. Such a combined effort is of paramount importance to evaluate and develop this new method of drilling to its full potential in a reasonable period of time. A process for the separation and recovery of cobalt and nickel was optimized for a sulfate leach solution of Indian Ocean sea nodules containing 80 g/m3 cobalt and 730 g/m3 nickel using the sodium salt of Cyanex 272 as the extractant. Extraction of both cobalt and nickel increased with an increase in equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The extracted species with respect to cobalt appears to be CoA2.3HA. More than 99.6% extraction of cobalt was achieved using 0.04M solvent in a three-stage counter current simulation at the A:O phase ratio of 3:2. The co-extraction of nickel was about 0.6% only. Two-stage countercurrent stripping of cobalt from the loaded organic at an A:O ratio of 1: 7 resulted in a pregnant electrolyte enriched by 0.8 kg/m3, thus enabling a ten times overall enrichment of cobalt. From the cobalt free raffinate, nickel extraction was carried out using 0.25M solvent in two countercurrent stages, and the extraction showed a 99.8% recovery. Stripping of nickel from the loaded solvent was carried out at an equal phase ratio with the advance electrolyte of pH 1.75 in two countercurrent stages. The nickel stripping efficiency was found to be 98.8%. The present studies indicated that complete recovery of cobalt and nickel was possible using nine counter-current stages.

The brecciated dolostone-hosted (Mississippi Valley-type) and associated shale-hosted stratiform Pb-Zn deposits at McArthur River occur adjacent to a major syndepositional fault, the Emu fault. Base-metal zoning, mineral parageneses, and Pb and stable isotope ratios indicate that both types of deposits formed contemporaneously from metalliferous brines that flowed into the host sediments from the Emu fault. Derivation of brines from underlying evaporitic sediments is suggested. Geochemical evidence indicates that the mechanism of ore formation was sulfate-reduction coupled with oxidation of organic matter. The textural relationships of stratiform sulfide mineralization to diagenetic dolomite concretions, chert blebs, volcanic glass shards, and inter-ore breccia beds, indicate that the reactions proceeded diagenetically within about 100 m of the sediment/water interface.

The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group's new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem's work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. Perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH), a member of the perfluorocarbon tracer group of compounds, has been shown to be a viable supplement to the widely used tracer gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). This viability stems from the fact that PMCH can be used concurrently with SF6 while maintaining adequate chromatographic separation and comparable sensitivity during analysis. However, the release of PMCH in an underground mine ventilation system is challenging due to its physical characteristics. While SF6 exists as a gas at room temperature and pressure and can be accurately released by a variety of means, PMCH exists as a volatile liquid at room temperature and pressure, preventing it from being deployed in a similar manner. One method to release PMCH is to use a permeation plug passive release vessel (PPRV), which allows for the controlled release of the gas. This paper presents the results of a study evaluating various preparation techniques, plug thicknesses and plug materials of an aluminumvessel PMCH release source, so that a source appropriate for the mine scale may be developed.

Many coal beds that will be mined in southeastern Montana are aquifers that provide essential local water supplies. Mine cuts along aquifer outcrops create almost imperceptible piezometric changes. Monitoring near such operations at Colstrip has detected almost no water-level declines in observation wells. Mine cuts between outcrops induce rapid storage depletion and associated piezometric depressions. One such cut near Decker induced 1,250 m3/day of flow from storage and created a piezometric depression of 3 meters or more as far as 1,500 meters from the mine. No wells have yet become non-productive but losses of some are inevitable as operations expand. Alternative supplies are available from aquifers stratigraphically below the disturbed materials. Effluents from active mines are chemically similar to other area waters because they are mixtures or ground waters entering the mine cuts. Occasional high concentrations of nitrate do occur, however, as residuals from explosives. Spoils generally consist of confined aquifers of wasted coal and coarse rubble at their bases, overlain by finer-grained sand, silt, and clay. Hydraulic conductivities and storage coefficients are comparable with those of undisturbed confined aquifers. Water quality in mined lands is highly diverse because of diverse spoils lithologies and poorly-established ground-water circulation. Ground water in spoils is more mineralized than in the coal beds and chemically resembles waters from sandstone aquifers. Hydrologic effects of mining will not be catastrophic or widespread but may have local significance. Most notable changes will be in water quality; availability will not be permanently reduced.

As our nation annually increases its total output of goods and services, as has been the trend, the consumption of steel and its most basic raw material - iron ore - also must increase, To deliver the most economical unit of iron ore to the blast furnace, each segment of the transportation system must be co-ordinated and utilized to its highest degree of efficiency. In some cases, such as with the water segment of the system, a new investment in capacity will be required.

This contribution presents the first multi-scale geophysical investigation conducted in the Abakaliki and Obubra mining districts (AOMD), southeastern Nigeria, for the exploration of shallowly emplaced (< 50 m) massive sulfide and barite mineral deposits. Raw airborne magnetic data covering the AOMD was acquired and subjected to diverse enhancement routines to facilitate the identification of areas of subtle magnetic anomalies for subsequent ground truthing. The mineralization is mainly made up of galena, sphalerite, and barite. The contrasting physical properties between these minerals and their host rocks make resistivity, induced polarization (IP), spontaneous potential (SP), and magnetic methods ideal to study and delineate the mineralization and possibly locate the ore bodies. Wenner DC resistivity and IP data acquired along the same parallel traverses are inverted using Res2dinv to produce 2D tomography models of resistivity and chargeability. The resistivity and IP models were successful in delineating zones of sulfide and barite mineralization. The ground SP data collected along the same traverses as the resistivity and IP data were interpreted as line graphs. The 1D SP models show a number of central negative anomalies that could be related to sulfide mineralization. These anomalies show fair-to-good spatial continuity and are in close agreement with the result obtained in the resistivity and chargeability model. This study suggests the presence of exploitable mineral deposits in the AOMD and demonstrates the superior interpretative ability of combined geophysical methods over a single geophysical approach.

When reading different studies discussing trends in coal mining, it appears that a substantial expansion of output by the year 2000 is predicted, even in the most pessimistic forecasts. Depletion of shallow, easy-to-mine deposits is only a matter of time, and the future average mining depth will increase. The proportion of slope to shaft mines operated during the next decades will change in favor of the shaft mines. Since an increasing amount of shafts in new nine developments seems to be inevitable, it appears appropriate to focus more attention on shaft design criteria. Some valuable papers have recently been published (1) that emphasize geotechnical aspects of shaft design. In the discussion that follows some other aspects of design criteria will be evaluated.

The Robbins Mobile Miner demonstrates the successful combination of hard rock excavation technology and the latest electronic control technology. The mobile miner, a partial face hard rock tunneling machine, features a fully integrated control system relying on a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). This PLC controls all functions: tramming, steering, boom swing, cutting depth, conveyor operation, air scrubbers, hopper loading and unloading, etc. The machine is fully instrumented allowing the PLC to monitor the results of all commands on a continuous basis, to record data, to evaluate developing problems, or to shut the machine down if necessary. The paper describes the development of the Robbins - Pasminco automated mobile miner and early testing at Pasminco Mining&apos;s Broken Hill Southern Operations, New South Wales, Australia.

The sand dunes which line the east shore of Lake Michigan resulted after the last, or Wisconsin, glacial period in Michigan. Melt-water streams carried vast quantities of glacial debris to the near shore areas of predecessors to Lake Michigan. As the lake levels receded, these vast quantities of sand were exposed to the prevailing westerly winds, which was the last major process that acted upon the sand and resulted in the formation of the dunes. 1 These dunes are one of the significant natural resources within the state. Michigan dune sands supply about 90% of the foundry sand used in the automotive industry, and 40% of the foundry sand used 2 for all purposes within the United States. The deposits owe their importance to the following factors: grain size distribution, grain shape, mineral composition and location with respect to the foundry sand market. In spite of their economic significance these I deposits are in jeopardy through legislative preemption.

The wet process is the most commonly used worldwide for phosphoric acid (PA) production, in which phosphate rock (PR) is reacted with strong acid mainly sulfuric acid. This work aims on studying the rare earth elements (REEs) distribution during the production of phosphoric acid using different qualities of phosphate through various industrial technologies. At the onset of this work, the process started with 12 samples of PR, PA, and phosphogypsum (PG) being taken simultaneously from two different Moroccan basins (Ouled Abdoun mine represented by K09 and Gantour mine depicted by G10, G20, BG) and various production lines at two processing platforms (Jorf Lasfar and Safi). Afterward, collected samples were prepared and analyzed for REE characterization using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Based on the analysis results, a transfer factor ( TFX) was introduced with the aim of gauging the REE distribution between PA and PG. The results showed that the total concentration of REEs in different phosphate qualities ranged from 411 to 631 ppm; the major part of this concentration was attributed to the four elements: Y, La, Ce, and Nd which constitute more than 77%. The REE distribution between PA and PG depends on neither the phosphate quality nor the industrial technology used since that the distribution results showed that 55 up to 66% of the initial REEs in phosphate rock ended up in the PG. The behavior of each REE was common except for the element scandium, which transferred mainly to the phosphoric acid.

The year 1988 for the minerals indus¬try was one of favorable worldwide economic conditions for continued, rationally constrained growth. There was continued improvement in relations between market economy nations and the Soviet Union and China. The "shooting war" between Iran and Iraq ended. Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan. And conditions were generally favorable for economic growth in developed market economy countries. These favorable conditions were darkened only somewhat by the continuing foreign debt crises discernible in some major mineral producing developing market economy countries. However, there were situations developing that became major headlines in the late spring - situations that may have pronounced effects in 1989. The most significant event is the muddled situation in China. There is a good chance of worsening international relations and consequent restraint of development projects that could prove beneficial to China and her international partners. Of only slightly lesser evident significance was the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in Iran. This could lead to a variety of paths for the new Iranian leaders. Continued outbreaks of ethnic unrest in the Soviet Union clearly presented problems to the Gorbachev regime. This unrest has raised questions of how far the doctrines of "glasnost" and "peristroika" would be extended, including extensions into the minerals field. Another area of unrest is Panama with its tainted election and the Western Hemisphere&apos;s obvious dissatisfaction with the Noreiga regime. While not a direct threat to any major mineral industry enterprise, the political situation certainly presents a potential threat to the Panama Canal. A new hydrometallurgical process has been developed to recover copper from sulfide ores. Copper is leached in a staged reactor system utilizing nitric and sulfuric acids at 105°C. Iron is removed from the pregnant liquor as a jarosite and cathode copper is electrowon directly from the purified pregnant liquor. The spent electrolyte is recycled. Nitrogen oxides evolved from the leach are reconverted to nitric acid and are also recycled. Sulfur is rejected as S°, jarosite and gypsum. The process is highly versatile and can recover precious metals, molybdenum and zinc, when these elements are present. Continuous, integrated, semi-pilot plant operations using chalcopyrite ores demonstrated 99% copper leaching and production of cathode grade copper. Economic evaluation shows that the process is competitive with pyrometallurgical and other hydrometallurgical processes.

The current study investigates sericite clay as an alternative source of potash and alumina. The alumina and potash content in the sericite is approximately 35 and 10%, respectively, compared with 50–55% in bauxite ore. Muscovite and illite phases are stable, and direct leaching is found to be ineffective. Here, planetary ball milling was performed, which provided dissociation of stable phases to relatively reactive phases. The milling led to a five-fold increase in the surface area, resulting in enhanced leaching kinetics even at low acid concentration. The statistical design obtained optimal conditions of 8 h of milling followed by leaching in 1.73 M HCl at 75 °C, yielding 82% alumina extraction in precipitate with 85% purity in γ-alumina form and 63% potassium dissolution in sylvinite phase. The yield of the precipitate was ~65–68%, and the acid leach residue contained primarily silica.

While the late 1960&apos;s are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970&apos;s will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the present major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. To realize that this concern will continue in the future, one need only observe the daily news media. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century, and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indica¬tions that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious techno-logical and environmental problems are associated with the develop¬ment and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can be solved within a reasonable time framework. Certainly our national well-being and continued survival, as a free nation within the world community, automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish. Before going into this subject, I would very much like to call to your attention some past history on patents granted by the United States Patent office that involved ammonium nitrate. On February 10, 1885, a patent was granted to Russell S. Penniman. "The object of this invention is to securely protect ammonium nitrate against deliquescent and to maintain it in substantially its normal disintegrated condition, so as to afford a new product suited for ready use in the manufacture of high explosives, and enable the immediate admixture thereof with any of the well known explosive substances or compounds heretofore employed. &apos;Whether the nitrate be thus granulated or otherwise reduced to a granular or divided condition, it is then thoroughly mixed with about twelve (12) percent of the fluid or semi-fluid carbonaceous protecting medium, which forms a readily applied jacket or coating for the granules of nitrate and also serves as a carbonaceous element in such explosive compounds as it may thereafter be employed in."

Utilizing the technology developed for oil well stimulation by hydrofracing, a disposal system which permanently fixes the waste has been proven. Large quantities of radioactive waste can be processed by a single well system making this method an attractive method for permanent radioactive waste disposal. The system depends on locating a relatively thick formation of impermeable, but easily fracturable rock such as a shale, creating a horizontal fracture, pumping the waste into the fracture in a form which will subsequently solidify and seal the fracture from the well system. The paper presents the theoretical considerations from creating and extending horizontal fractures and how these considerations were used in designing a waste disposal system which is now operating.

This paper will describe the development, testing, performance evaluation, and in particular, the utilization for a mining application of revolutionary new mini-disc cutters for use in micro-tunneling and small-and medium-diameter tunneling or mining. It will begin by describing the engineering, testing, and development of rock cutting technology in conjunction with the Rock Boring Laboratories of the Colorado School of Mines. During initial tests, the five-inch cutters were able to penetrate limestone and welded tuff with compressive strengths of 9,000 psi to 24,000 psi. High excavation rates at low thrust and power were achieved with considerably less cutter wear than all previously available conventional discs. Eventually, the discs-with their modified carbide-insert cutting rings, high-load capacity bearings and cantilevered mountings-were able to facilitate the rapid and cost-effective installation of micro-and small-diameter pipes and tunnels in large cobbles and even solid rock, with compressive strengths exceeding 30,000 psi. This paper will also discuss the further development of the machine&apos;s cutter head and discs to full-scale site use on a range of tunnel machine sizes and soil conditions, including rock, boulders, and soft ground. Potential mining applications include the installation of tunnels to pro-vide ventilation, emergency escape routes, water drainage, compressed air, electricity, and sand-fill.

The vast majority of the estimated 100 million rock anchors installed in mines in the USA per year use resin cartridges (Tadolini and Mazzoni, 2006). About 4.5 million per annum of these are bolts with a mechanical shell that if properly installed become effective active supports on installation. In addition, cable anchors (mostly passive) are installed with typically 4 ft of effective resin anchorage length sometimes with mechanical shells, which further makes the installation more difficult. This is because the cable (even with a stiffener tube) is not very rigid. When installing bolts with mechanical shells and cable bolts in the holes, the back-pressure can be so high that the installation is unsuccessful often creating a ?spinner? (an un-tensioned bolt) at best or buckling the bolt thus requiring another bolt/cable to be installed, or leaving a poorly functioning unit. The installation problems can create a significant potential safety hazard and waste time and money. Using a purpose designed test rig that physically inserts different rock anchors into pipes with resin and measure the back-pressure developed with time during the insertion/ installation. The test installation procedure is designed to mirror that used underground by rockbolt operators in coal mines. In addition a computer model has been calibrated that can predict the approximate back pressure of new anchor and resin combinations acting as a screen before physical testing. This research has lead to an understanding and quantification of the insertion back-pressures and this already resulted in improved prototype designs that could lead to more reliable mechanical shell and resin bolt installations.
