Most statistical measures of mineral exploration continued downward in 1986. Prospects in 1987, however, appear to have brightened for exploration as the overall economic health of the mineral industry improved. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) survey of US and Canadian firms documents the marked decline in US mineral exploration since the early 1980's. From 1981 through 1986, the total exploration expenditure by US firms declined by more than 73% (Fig. 1). Exploration expenditures by US firms declined by 66%%. US based professional exploration staffs were slashed by 70% (Fig. 2). Also, many firms have written off some reserves because of weak markets or have not delineated new reserves to replace production. The Canadian government reported that between 1981 and 1986 Canadian molybdenum re¬serves had declined by 30%, lead and zinc reserves by 20%, and nickel and copper reserves by 15%. The SEG survey also shows the immediate impact of the decline in the dollar on US exploration expenditures abroad. Between 1981 and 1986 the share of the exploration dollar spent by US firms outside of the country declined by nearly one-half and exploration acreage abroad declined by 69%. The downward trend of the last six years may finally be near the end as a leaner and more efficient minerals industry starts to gear up for a period of increased activity. An industry survey reported to Mine Development Bimonthly (Metals Economics Group) indicates that mining firms were expected to increase exploration expenditures in 1987 by at least 10% above 1986 levels. Worldwide expenditures for 1987 by companies covered by the report were expected to top $800 million. It is the first time since 1984 that an increase in exploration expenditures was expected. Also, the US Bureau of Land Management reported a 30% increase in new mining claims for fiscal year 1987 over fiscal year 1986. The bulk of the increase in claims was in states having intense gold exploration, particularly Washington and Oregon. Much of the optimism is undoubtedly due to the increases in metal prices that occurred in 1987. Some of these increases include gold, average price up about 20%; copper, average price up 24%; aluminum, average price up 26%; and nickel, average spot price up 20%. The SEG survey shows precious and base metals accounting for 89% of the exploration expenditures in the US in 1986, up 52% from 1981. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that 80% of US exploration activity in 1986 was directed entirely at gold (1986 Minerals Yearbook). Worldwide exploration plans indicate the continued dominance of gold exploration. New programs were announced for Ghana, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Major new exploration programs were also launched for lead-zinc sulfides in Morocco, platinum and palladium in northwest Brazil, rare earth minerals in Greenland, diamonds in Indonesia, and heavy minerals off-shore Australia. Newmont Mining Corporation and Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. concluded an exchange of land and reserves in an agreement signed May 3, 1999.This exchange of assets allowed Newmont to develop the Deep Post underground mine from within Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit, thus reducing capital expenditures, lowering operating costs, and advancing the production schedule by nearly three years. Based on previous experience, Newmont is confident that the Deep Post underground mine can be successfully developed and operated within a large, active, open pit mine. The project also faces difficult geotechnical conditions including weak ground, scattered pockets of groundwater, and elevated rock temperatures.

Roof bolter canopy air curtains (CACs) are gaining acceptance as a respirable dust control device that can provide roof bolter operators with protection from overexposure to respirable coal mine dust. Both lab and field studies on the effectiveness of roof bolter CACs have been published. Field studies have shown the effectiveness to be variable. However, in all previous field studies, none has been conducted when the roof bolting machine operates downwind of the continuous miner (CM)—a scenario for which the CAC was designed to provide respirable dust control. This study, performed by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), was conducted to test a CAC on a roof bolter machine operating downwind of the CM. The results of testing demonstrated that the roof bolter CAC can effectively provide respirable dust protection for roof bolter operators with dust control efficiencies ranging from 11 to 40%.

"Molybdenum recovery by solvent extraction has gained interest partly due to advances in concentrate leach technology. Historically, both molybdenum and rhenium have been produced using amine-based extractants with the ability to co-extract both metals. Alternatively, a phosphinic acid-based extractant (CYANEX® 600) can be used depending on the flow sheet. CYANEX® 600 selectively extracts Mo leaving Re in the raffinate, which is a valuable feature in plants which require rejection of the rhenium from the molybdenum circuit. CYANEX® 600 piloting results are reviewed and compared to commercial experiences with an amine-based extractant. INTRODUCTION Molybdenum is most commonly found as molybdenite (MoS2) in primary porphyry deposits (about 59% of global reserves) and copper porphyries (about 39% of molybdenum reserves)[1]. Recovery from molybdenite traditionally involves flotation (concentrates typically containing 85 – 95% MoS2) followed by roasting to produce MoO3. Solvent extraction is also used to recover molybdenum from acidic aqueous solutions resulting from scrubbing of roaster and smelter off gasses and leaching of molybdenite (uranium ores). Molybdenum is also frequently found in low concentrations in copper leach inventories[2]. More recently, pressure oxidation has gained interest to treat molybdenite concentrates. Molybdenum Chemistry The chemistry of molybdenum is complex with a series of extractable species existing dependent on the pH and oxidation state as shown in Figure 1.Under strongly basic conditions, molybdenum primarily exists as MoO42- while under strongly acidic conditions MoO22+ becomes the predominant species. In between, a number of isopolymolybdates such as Mo7O246- and Mo8O264- are dominant. Equations (1) – (3) demonstrate some of the proposed molybdenum equilibrium reactions[1]."

Using electrochemical techniques it was demonstrated that bioleaching of gold from refractory pyritic ores is a complex phenomenon. Many intermediate electrochemical reactions were found to be involved in the oxidation of pyrite, using cyclic voltammetry and carbon paste-pyrite containing electrode. Furthermore, the oxidation process was controlled by solid-state diffusion as suggested by chronoamperometric and chronopotentiometric measurements. Using the Sand's approach, the activation energy of solid-state diffusion was found to be = 22.4 kJ. After bioleaching, 96% gold was extracted from the leach resi¬due with a thiourea solution in 1 hour. A generalized model for the mechanism of pyrite oxidation has been presented.

A new mining project can raise questions about what effect it will have on the community after it closes. Historically, little was done by communities to plan for and accommodate the changes in the economic infrastructure when a mine project is finished either after the ore runs out or if market conditions deteriorate and make it unprofitable. Projects that were underfunded were generally unable to withstand periodic market downturns. However, data in a recent study conducted by the Seidman Research Institute leads to the conclusion that, even when a mining project is terminated, there can be (and, in the specific case studied, is) a residual beneficial economic effect in the community, which lasts for a long period of time.

Coal dust produced during the mining process is a prime explosion hazard in underground coal mines. To inert the coal dust and prevent a catastrophic propagating dust explosion, rock dust is applied to the roof, ribs, and floor surfaces of mine entries. Currently, one determination of whether a mine is adequately protected from the coal dust explosion hazard is made by analyzing collected mine dust samples for percent total incombustible content (% TIC). A minimum of 80% TIC is required per 30 CFR 75.403. The as-received moisture of the dust sample is included in the % TIC. Moisture and humidity within a coal mine vary greatly with the seasons, with explosions occurring more frequently during dry winter months. This paper will discuss the fluctuations of the as-received moisture content of the mine dust samples collected by U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration inspectors in 2010 and the observed fluctuations of the moisture content of rock dust within the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Office of Mining Safety and Health Research Bruceton Experimental Mine and the Safety Research Coal Mine over a one-year period.

NMBGMR has been collecting data on uranium mining districts, mines and mills since it was created in 1927 and has converted years of historical data into a relational database that can be imported in ArcMap. The database includes information on mining districts, mines, mills, geochemistry, photographs, and bibliography. The available data includes location, production, reserves, geologic, geochemical, resource potential, and other data. The NURE stream-sediment data provides geochemical analyses for >27,000 samples collected in New Mexico during 1970s. The NURE hydrogeochemical data provides analyses for water samples. ArcMap includes location of individual ore bodies as polygons and incorporates the mines and NURE data as individual site locations. The purposes of these databases are to provide computerized data that will aid in identifying and evaluating resource potential, resource development and management, production, and possible environmental concerns, such as physical hazards (i.e. hazardous mine openings), indoor radon, regional exposure to radiation from the mines, background geochemical data and point-sources of possible pollution in areas of known mineral deposits.

In the pelletizing plant of Hoogovens, Estel BV, a varying mixture of hematites and magnetites is used for the production of acid and (occasionally) fluxed pellets. Optimum results regarding productivity, quality and process control are obtained with mixtures containing 30-40 % magnetites. A decrease of the magnetite ratio or an increase of the basicity has a great influence on both productivity and heat and power consumption. Tests have been carried out to find the extent to which magnetite can be replaced by b.f. dust, mill-scale and coke breeze. Pilot plant tests show that about 80-100 % of the production loss due to a decrease in magnetite content or to the increase in basicity can be regained without damage to the quality by adding coke breeze. The amount of coke breeze should be limited tot 1,5 %; if this percen¬tage is chosen higher, the quality of the pellets deteriorates rapidly. The amount of coke breeze to be added should be about 30 % above the theoretical value, based on heat balance considerations. The results achieved by incorporating b.f. dust and mill-scale into the pelletmix were also encouraging, but as some types of mill-scale are very difficult to grind and the supply of b.f. dust is limited, the research has not been carried out extensively in this field. The pilot plant tests on replacement of magnetite by coke breeze have been followed by industrial tests, during which the breeze was added to the ore feed before the dry-grinding system.

Within this context limestone has truely become an "urban ore". Its uses extend from traditional aggregate markets to lawn and garden, archetectual, chemical, agricultural, industrial, and environmental applications. This paper looks at both the occurance and uses of limestone in the northeast, and briefly examines changing patterns in consumptive use.

In an earlier study (Deschênes et al., 2009), gold and silver were shown to be efficiently extracted from samples taken from the Kupol Mine in Russia using lead nitrate in a cyanide leach system. In the current study, a com-parison of the technical and economic merits of a new technology called CANMET enhanced leaching process (CELP) was made with the cyanidation/acidification-volatilization-recycling (AVR) process using eight metal-lurgical variability samples, as well as a large composite sample, which was to represent the initial two years of Kupol mill feed. The composite sample leach feed assayed 33.4 g/t Au and 289 g/t Ag. The metallurgical results from the large composite sample demonstrated that CELP produced very similar gold and slightly higher silver leach extractions compared to the conventional cyanidation/AVR leach conditions at 1/2 the cyanide concentra-tion (1,000 ppm NaCN in CELP vs. 2,000 ppm for cyanidation/AVR leach conditions). It was estimated that the total cost per ton was approximately the same for the two technologies (total cost of CELP with the use of Merrill-Crowe at $46.48/t, with cyanidation/AVR at $46.13/t). However, the implementation of CELP would eliminate a capital expenditure of approximately $5 million for an AVR system based on a 2005 feasibility level cost estimate. Eight variability samples used to confirm the composite sample results showed that, on average, the gold leach extractions with CELP and the conventional leach conditions were very similar, but the average silver leach extraction was 2.1% higher for CELP. Furthermore, CELP silver leach extraction was 4.6% higher on average compared to conventional cyanidation for the four mid-grade variability samples evaluated. The decision was made to remove AVR cyanide recovery from the flowsheet and implement CELP at Kupol. The ability to use the conventional leach equipment with CELP and simplify the flowsheet was also a factor, given the remote location of the Kupol Mine.

The Davis detector cavern was excavated on the 4850 Level of the former Homestake Mine in the mid- 1960s to house a novel neutrino detector developed by Nobel Prize winner Dr. R. Davis. The original cavern was about 9.1 x 16.8 x 9.7 m high, excavated in a Precambrian amphibolite known as the Yates unit and enlarged in 2010. In 2009, the National Science Foundation selected the site for development as a national Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL). This retrospective rock mechanics study of the Davis cavern is intended to inform design of the much larger caverns and laboratory rooms being considered for the same 4850 Level. Provision for rock mass variability, sequential excavation, jointing and wall damage from blasting are included in analyses that were done using two different computer codes and methods (FLAC3D and UTAH3). The results are in agreement with observations and show that cavern stability is indeed the case. The main conclusions are: (1) if conventional scaling of laboratory rock elastic moduli and strengths is done, then 0.25 and 0.50 scale factors are reasonable, (2) measured statistical and spatial variability in rock properties should be incorporated into geomechanical analyses to better reflect reality, (3) discontinuities (“joints”) are essential to reliable analysis of excavation safety and when properly taken into account eliminate the need for empirical “scaling” of laboratory rock properties, (4) major geologic features such as rhyolite dikes and breccia zones may be important to excavation safety at Homestake and should be explicitly represented in analyses and (5) quantifying wall blast damage is important to engineering design of underground excavations.

The dressing of Bolivian tin ores has been done up to the present by classical. gravity methods, taking advantage of the high specific gravity of cassiterite compared with that of the accompanying gangue. For this purpose, jigs and shaking tables are used in the treatment of the various size fractions in which the ore is classified. Bolivian ores are mainly of the vein type and, to obtain a reasonable separation, crushing and several stages of grinding are necessary during the process to substantially liberate the cassiterite from the gangue. Gravity processes for cassiterite are effective for sizes down to 200 mesh. Below this size the efficiency of the gravity methods falls off very rapidly with increasing fineness of the mineral grains. The conventional treatment for this material is desliming followed by tabling on shaking tables various other types of machines have been designed for the gravity treatment of these fine particles but they have had limited success. Bolivian ores contain an appreciable amount of minus 200 mesh material constituted by "primary fines" caning from the mine itself, and "secondary fines" originated during the crushing and grinding necessary for liberation of the difficulty in the treatment of these fine particles is one of the causes why the recovery of tin in concentrates is only of around 50% in the mines owned by Corporacidn Minera de Bolivia, the State owned enterprise. The initial step in the pelletizing of iron ores is the production of green balls. The importance of this step cannot be overemphasized as the physical quality of the green balls has a very significant effect on the subsequent induration process, regardless of the type of the indurating equipment employed. The ability of the green balls to withstand the rigors of handling, distribution, compaction and drying will have an effect on the degree of success of any pelletizing operation. Many factors affect the physical quality of the green balls including the prior processing of the iron ore, the characteristics of the balling feed and the type and quality of the binder used (if any). When working on the development of a new project or studying an existing operation, it is often desirable to determine what effect variations in these factors will have on green ball quality. It is generally impractical to make these determinations on a commercial, or even pilot plant scale, especially when the number of variables to be studied is large. Because of this, many organizations have developed batch techniques for producing green balls to enable them to perform such investigations with a minimum of time and expense. The batch balling method is at best, only an approximation of commercial balling systems. Many practitioners employ the use of pre-formed seed pellets to initiate a batch run. Thus, the growth mechanism encountered in any experiment is essentially snowballing. Unless an instability is introduced into a balling test (such as an excessive initial feed rate or an unusual feed material characteristic) the growth mechanism of coalescence is not present to a significant extent nor is it desirable. In a continuous operation, both mechanisms are present and necessary to sustaining the system. The batch balling technique thus produces pellets in an idealized manner and cannot be used to directly predict commercial green ball qualities. A general relationship does exist however, and the procedure is fairly sensitive to variations in test parameters. Although many refinements to this technique have been introduced over the years, batch balling is still essentially an art and subject to "operator effect". Therefore, to assure consistant and reliable results, skilled technicians who carefully adhere to established practice must be utilized.

There are two major gold recovery methods: the hydrometallurgical technique, which employs cyanide solutions, and amalgamation method, which involves mercury (Hg). These methods present considerable health, safety, and environmental concerns. Past applications of alpha-cyclodextrin (α-CD) on gold scraps show that α-CD is not only inexpensive, but is also environmentally friendly. This research work used α-CD to recover gold from gold ores instead of gold scraps. The gold ore was sourced from Shanono gold deposit site Kano State,Nigeria. The gold ore was characterized by fire assay (FA) for the precious metal. The concentrate was digested with aqua regia (AR) for 24 h. Modified AR, where hydrochloric acid was replaced with hydrobromic acid, was used for the gold digestion due to the good match in molecular recognition between gold bromide ion (AuBr)− and α- CD in a second sphere coordination complex. The digestate was characterized using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Gold recovery using this technique is pH sensitive, and five pH values (2.0, 3.6, 4.0, 5.4, and 6.0) were investigated. FA analysis showed the Shanono gold ore deposit contains an average of 4.71 ppm of gold, AAS analysis showed highest gold recovery of 69% at pH 4.0, which is lower than recoveries from the metal scraps. This could be due to the presence of other gangue minerals closely associated with the ore. However, gold recovery using α-CD on Shanono gold ore has shown to have a higher yield of 69% compared to 35.5% yield obtainable by Artisan Small Scale Miners using mercury.

Prior to 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. In the consideration of expansion opportunities, the existing process did not lend itself to a program geared towards processing the total output of KUCC mining and milling operations. During 1989 and 1990, a number of smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1.0 million tonnes per year of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 million tonnes per year. Following the shutdown of the smelter facility utilizing the Noranda technology in May 1995, the flash smelting furnace commenced operation in June with the flash converting furnace startup following a few weeks later. The smelter has achieved design production targets and environmental goals. Current operating rates are at or above design rates for concentrate and matte processing. Emissions are lower than the permit levels and equate to less than 3.5 kg of S02 per tonne of copper. This paper outlines the design, construction, startup and the first two years of operation of the modernized KUCC smelter.

About 200 M tons of coal were imported into Japan in 2007 and Indonesia was its second largest exporter, accounting for about 30 M tons (12% of the total imported coal). Indonesia produced about 200 M tons of coal, about 75% of which was exported in 2007. As the Indonesian government has decided on an energy policy wherein 33% of the country?s primary energy demand will be met by coal by the year 2025, the domestic demand for coal has increased dramatically in recent years. Over 99% of the coal produced in Indonesia comes from surface mines. However, the conditions of surface mines are worsening each year: the stripping ratio is increasing, approaching the economic ratio, and the infrastructure for coal from inland mining areas is insufficient for such intense mining operations. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. However, mining engineers and/or miners in Indonesia do not have a lot of experiences, expertise and know-how concerning the plans and operations of an underground coal mine. In addition, the industry faces a lot of problems which include poor conditions such as a steep coal seam, groundwater problem, stability of highwall, etc. Under these situations, a mine targeted in this research attempts to develop a new underground mine from an open-cut highwall because the stripping ratio in the surface mining area has almost reached the limitation of economic value. This paper discusses the possible development of a new underground coal mine from an open-cut highwall by means of field observation and numerical analysis.

"The results of laboratory evaluations were used to compare the potential of two alternative, biomass-derived fuels as a control strategy to reduce the exposure of underground miners to aerosols and gases emitted by diesel-powered equipment. The effects of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) biodiesel and hydrotreated vegetable oil renewable diesel (HVORD) on criteria aerosol and gaseous emissions from an older-technology, naturally aspirated, mechanically controlled engine equipped with a diesel oxidation catalytic converter were compared with those of widely used petroleum-derived, ultralow-sulfur diesels (ULSDs). The emissions were characterized for four selected steady-state conditions. When fueled with FAME biodiesel and HVORD, the engine emitted less aerosols by total particulate mass, total carbon mass, elemental carbon mass and total number than when it was fueled with ULSDs. Compared with ULSDs, FAME biodiesel and HVORD produced aerosols that were characterized by single modal distributions, smaller count median diameters, and lower total and peak concentrations. For the majority of test cases, FAME biodiesel and HVORD favorably affected nitric oxide (NO) and adversely affected nitrogen dioxide (NO2) generation. Therefore, the use of these alternative fuels appears to be a viable tool for the underground mining industry to address the issues related to emissions from diesel engines, and to transition toward more universal solutions provided by advanced engines with integrated exhaust aftertreatment technologies. IntroductionDiesel engines have been the workhorses of modern society for industrial and transportation enterprises. Diesel engines of all generations are extensively used in a variety of light-, medium- and heavy-duty applications in underground mining operations around the world. Fuels obtained from various sources and with wide-ranging chemistries have been combusted in diesel engines. However, the bulk of the currently used fuel can still be traced to nonrenewable petroleum sources. The petroleum-derived diesel fuels are primarily made up of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons (parafins or alkanes), aromatic hydrocarbons (arenes or aryl hydrocarbon), and unsaturated hydrocarbons with double bonds (olefins and alkenes). Improvements in the quality of petroleum-based diesel fuels was identified in federal regulations as an important piece in resolving the puzzle of diesel engine emissions (Environmental Protection Agency, 2001, 2004). The reduction of U.S. diesel fuel sulfur content below 15 ppm had the effect of lowering sulfate emissions and enabling the development and implementation of catalyzed emissions control technology across a wide spectrum of applications."

The research activities of the Minerals Research Laboratory, which is a part of North Carolina State University, is normally confined to solving beneficiation problems, and developing flotation processes for the mining industry. In recent years the laboratory has veered from its main purpose somewhat and has placed some emphasis on the manufacture of products from mineral concentrates. This has been the result of requests for help from industry. One such request came to the MRL from a talc producer in North Carolina who was having a difficult time competing with foreign imports of steel marking crayons. He felt that if a process could be developed whereby a satisfactory crayon could be produced from powdered talc at a low cost that he could compete.
