Injuries and fatalities resulting from roof falls are still a major concern in U.S. coal mines, and many researchers are focused on developing meaningful approaches to minimize this hazard. In the United States, coal mine roofs can vary widely in composition, geometry, and inherent heterogeneity, leading to a wide array of different roof fall failure types. Researchers frequently employ numerical modeling tools to reproduce this physical phenomenon and provide key guides to engineers regarding roof conditions and control as long as the input data and constitutive relations are appropriately selected. Simulating such complexity requires expertise and constitutive models that adequately simulate roof behaviors. However, the currently available constitutive models have shortcomings in capturing some of the roof fall failure types common in underground coal mines, such as guttering. A new constitutive model is developed to address the shortcomings of constitutive models commonly used for coal roof stability analysis. The constitutive model developed in this study combines the anisotropic-elasticity and nonlinear strain-softening responses. In addition, the developed constitutive model can simulate up to three different joint sets implicitly, allowing for use in both continuum and discontinuum settings, and can be used in both Lagrangian finite-volume and distinct element method codes of Itasca. First, the mathematical expressions of the model are provided. Afterward, the validation phase of the developed model that covers comparisons with analytical solutions and those of existing models (e.g., anisotropic elasticity, ubiquitous-joint, and bilinear strain-hardening/softening ubiquitous-joint plasticity) is presented. Finally, a hypothetical coal mine roadway facing high horizontal stress is simulated. The presented model successfully shows three distinct stages of a cutter roof in a shale roof: (1) initiation of shear cracks at the rib– roof intersection, (2) extension of cracks deeper into the roof (i.e., above the roof bolt length horizon), and (3) cantilevered roof. It is demonstrated that the presented constitutive model has the potential to help future researchers in simulating various roof responses.

This Bureau of Mines report describes methane liberation trends from all U.S. coal mines liberating over 100 Mcfd (100,000 cfd) (2.8 Mm3/d). Detailed are results from the latest Bureau survey performed in 1985 and shown are mine and company name, location, coalbed and methane liberation quantity. The report shows that in 1985, there were 180 mines producing more than 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) and the total quantity of methane liberated by these mines was 303,900 Mcfd (8,605 Mm3/d). This data is compared with previous studies performed in 1971 , 1973, 1975, and 1980. From 1971 to 1985, there was a 10% decrease in the number of mines liberating at least 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) but there was a dramatic 34% increase of liberations from these mines. The increase seems to be caused by new mines being developed in deeper, gassier coalbeds, particularly in Alabama. Likewise, in comparing the ten highest liberating mines in 1975, 1980, and 1985, an increase in methane liberations each year was experienced. The report classifies mines by three levels of liberations: greater than 100 Mcfd but less than 500 Mcfd (2.8 to 14 Mm3/d); 500 Mcfd to 1 ,000 Mcfd (1 4 to 28 Mm3/d); and greater than 1,000 Mcfd (>28 Mm3/d). It was found that 87% of liberations were from mines producing over 1,000 Mcfd but these accounted for only 38% of all the mines in the study.

Established in the 60-ies, the Zlatna Panega quarry is a cement raw materials quarry supplying 95% of the needs of the Zlatna Panega Cement Plant with limestone, marl and other silica-aluminates. The two major types of raw materials are formed by accordingly dipping strata of Upper Jurassic limestones and lower Cretaceous marls. Between them there is a ?transition-zone? or ?contact-zone? of a high-silica content layer, about 5-m thick, defined as ?flint? by investigations including spot sampling throughout the quarry. For many years this ?contact-zone? layer was neglected due its negligible thickness. Further, with the increasing demand on the quality of the raw materials feed to the Plant and the focus on variability of the chemical and mineralogical components, it was decided not to mine any of the parts of the quarry contaminated by this material, for about three years. The latter had an impact on the availability of operating benches that could result in a substantial decrease in the total recoverable re-serves of Zlatna Panega, particularly with respect to marls. There were considerations for resorting to a partial, selective excavation of the quarry pit with a reduced lifetime for the lime-stones and re-opening of an other (currently in-active) marl quarry at a distance of 6 Km from the Plant. The Quarry Team of the Zlatna Panega quarry was assigned to study the problem. The ?contact? layer was duly confirmed with systematic geological (including mineralogy) studies, statistical analysis of available data, surface sampling and shallow exploration drills, resulted into distinguishing a third type of reserves and their credible subsurface delineation by means of geological 3-D modeling and quarry design. A new quarry design was finally elaborated with a view of providing flexibility in mining, utilization of the total volume of all available reserves and maximizing the mine life of Zlatna Panega quarry. An industrial test took place in December 2005, by using the contaminated parts of the quarry (co-mining of the ?contact-zone? materials) at a contribution of 15-20% in the raw materials mix, as dictated by their contribution in the total recoverable resources of the quarry. The purpose was to investigate the viability of this solution ? in line with improved quarry planning ? without compromising the quality of cement production and the efficiency of Plant Operations. Recent changes in the field of ore and bulk commodity handling has forced a reevaluation of previously conceived notions. When vessels were small, and sources of raw material were reasonably close to areas of need, the role of the shipping terminal was of secondary importance. Now terminals must be built to take advantage of the economic benefits of the supercarriers. The shipping rates of the 80's will not be determined by the 60,000 DWT or even 150,000 ton capacity bulk carrier, but rather by the supercarriers in the 250,000 DWT class or larger. When the Suez Canal was closed, the shipping industry took a hard look at the economics of the large bulk carrier. Naval architects overcame the problems and successfully designed large supertankers, which today are plying the seas in excess of 350,000 DWT. Orders have been placed for tankers of 480,000 DWT. The shippers of dry bulk materials are now coming to similar conclusions about the economics of supercarriers. As of today, over 40 orders have been placed for vessels in the 250,000 DWT class, representing an investment of over 11/2 billion dollars, and many more are being considered. These vessels are being designed as combination ore/oil (0/0) or ore/bulk/oil (OBO's) carriers. The oil industry has seen the need for terminals which can accommodate these supertankers. This paper reviews the growth pattern in bauxite and alumina production, and primary aluminum smelting through 1980. Because the alumina and primary metal are intermediate products of the major integrated aluminum companies, it is not possible to determine their production costs. The costs indicated in this paper are order of magnitude costs based on published figures and the market price of these products. The conclusions in this paper indicate the general pattern of growth in the aluminum industry and are not meant to be a substitute for the feasibility and economic studies that are needed for individual bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum smelting projects.

The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project, was developed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago as a two-phase solution to the problem of waterway pollution and basement flooding due to sewer system backups created by the combined sewer overflows. With only one contract left before completion of the Phase I tunnels—the 12.4 km(7.7 mi.) long Little Calumet leg—the pollution control phase of the 175.7 km(109.2 mi.) long system will be 93% complete, once the Torrence Avenue tunnel project comes to an end. This paper describes the Torrence Avenue tunnel project, currently under construction by the joint venture of Kenny (Sponsor) / Kiewit / Shea. Mining of the10.4 km (34,151 feet) long and 8.3 m (27'-4") diameter mainline tunnel was completed in a record thirty-one-weeks period and the concrete lining is nearing completion. Details on the complete muck handling system, numerous mining and concrete lining records will be given.

The spent catalyst is one of solid waste resources, which contains precious metals with considerable recovery value. However, due to the different compositions of catalyst, the recovery process is difficult. Most of the catalysts are supported by alumina which has good alkali-soluble properties, while platinum is insoluble in alkali. Platinum is enriched by pressurized alkaline solution which is a kind of hydrometallurgical process. The novelty of this study is the separation of alumina and platinum from the spent catalyst and the enrichment of platinum in the solid phase. In this study, a leaching process using NaOH as leaching agent under high temperature and pressure was employed. The effects of alkali concentration, leaching temperature, leaching time, and liquid–solid ratio on leaching efficiency were investigated. The optimum process conditions were determined as follows: alkali concentration of 240 g/L, temperature of 200℃, pressure of 1.20 MPa, time of 1 h, liquid–solid ratio of 5:1. It was concluded that the leaching rate of alumina can reach 99.69%. The content of platinum increased from 0.1749 to 21.12%, the loss of platinum was 3.39%, and the enrichment ratio of platinum increased by 120.82 times. The leaching kinetics of alumina was studied based on the shrinkage core model. The activation energy of alumina leaching is 19.53 kJ/mol, and the leaching process is controlled by chemical reaction. Pressurized alkali solution can not only efficiently leachate alumina from the spent catalyst and enrich platinum, but also reduce the reaction time and increase reaction rate.

Coal-fired power plants in the U. S. produce approximately 20 million metric tons of Hue-gas desulfurization sludge every year. The sludge mainly consists of calcium sulfite and calcium sulfate. This can be converted to synthetic gypsum, which in principle could be a marketable commodity. However, many Hue-gas scrubbers produce sludges that do not meet the quality requirements of the gypsum industry, and so their sludges must be landfilled as a waste. If a suitable method can be developed for removing certain objectionable impurities from the sludge, it will then be possible to market the material instead of landfilling it. A sludge from a natural-oxidation scrubber was characterized, and the main contaminant was found to be calcium carbonate from unreacted limestone. Based on the particle size and the characteristics of the material, froth flotation was considered as a method for purifying the material. Since no flotation studies have ever been carried out to separate calcium carbonate particles from calcium sulfite or calcium sulfate particles, it was first necessary to select a suitable collecting reagent. Based on Zeta-potential studies, the most suitable reagent was found to be an octadecylamine-octadecylguanidine complex. Results are presented for flotation of calcium carbonate from scrubber sludge using this reagent, in a reverse-flotation process. The best results were obtained when the sludge was first pre-cleaned using a water-only cyclone to remove unfloatable coarse limestone, followed by froth flotation to remove fine limestone.

The responsible treatment of natural resources, including mineral raw materials, contributes to the protection of the environment. The management of resources and the environment encompasses reduction of emission through application of environmentally friendly processes, economical use of resources, recycling and substitution, application of energy saving processes, land reclamation and recultivation, as well as a well balanced regional and land use planning. A variety of materials are needed for measures to protect the environment. Many of these materials are, or to a large percentage consist of, mineral raw materials, which become effective either directly or indirectly in their natural state or after an appropriate industrial treatment. We call them environmental minerals. Although extraction and processing of these mineral raw materials destined for use in the protection of the environment, may have a negative impact on the environment on one hand, preventive or curing measures to protect the environment on the other would not be possible without them. We have to accept certain smaller burdens of the environment, which naturally will have to be kept at the lowest possible level, in order to avoid or minimize greater damages to nature. In the broad group of industrial minerals and rocks there is a wide variety of mineral raw materials, which lend themselves for countermeasures in favor of the environment. To hamper their production and processing through excessive environmental regulations would make the protection of the very environment more difficult or even impossible.

New York State’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has undertaken the largest transportation project in New York City. The East Side Access Project (ESA) will introduce MTA’s Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) service to the East Side of Manhattan, to a new terminal located beneath the existing, landmark Grand Central Terminal(GCT). Construction of the Manhattan Segment of the project will affect overlying operating facilities of two other MTA entities, Metro-North Railroad (MNR) and New York City Transit (NYCT) and major Midtown Manhattan buildings. The paper describes the evolution of the GCT concept at Manhattan from a shallow alternative proposed by a Major Investment Study (MIS), that would require extensive underpinning of multi-story buildings and have considerable impact on MNR and NYCT operations, to a deep alternative with lesser risk and potential for disruption.

Minerals are certainly where they are found. The undemocratic distribution of the world's mineral wealth has created an incongruous inbalance: mineral-rich, scarcely populated countries supply highly-populated industrialised countries that in turn consume more minerals than they produce. This has been as much a generating force for colonisation, invasion, and war as religion, political ideals, or megalomania. The Industrial Revolution of the seventeenth century was born in Britain, a country with large domestic resources of coal, iron, lead, zinc, copper, tin, etc., as well as a large population. As consumption outstripped production imports filled the gap, particularly from its worldwide colonies. For example, when Canada was founded in 1867 more than 905 of its investments were British financed, and much of these were mineral-based. The British made similar investments in South East Asia, Australasia, the Caribbean, and elsewhere, as did the other industrialised Western European countries hungry for raw materials. Later the United States emerged as a leading industrial power, again due largely to its abundant natural resources. Consumption soon exceeded production and foreign sources were saught. American business went exploring abroad ant many a mineral resource was developed almost totally on the basis of the US market many .thousands of miles away. Closer to home, Canada was also an obvious target for the US with its rich mineral resource base, small population, and geographical juxtaposition, so much so that about the time of the 1914-18 War the US took over from Britain as the major investor in Canada, and this peaked in 1967 when the US accounted for 80% of the country's foreign investment. After the 1939-45 War Japan joined the ranks of the USA and Western Europe as industrialised powers, and they too searched the world for the deposits lacking in their homeland.

"Mine water generated from underground coal mining operations contains both dissolved and particulate solids. Dissolved solids primarily consist of sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, chlorides and sulfates. When discharged to a receiving stream without treatment, these constituents create a potentially toxic environment for aquatic life.A case study is presented to discuss how a centralized treatment plant treats mine water from six locations to meet discharge limitations for chlorides. Located in West Virginia, this facility consistently achieves less than the National Pollutant Discharge Elemenation System (NPDES) permit limitation of 218 mg/L chlorides in the discharge while generating almost zero liquid waste. The dissolved solids concentration in the influent ranges between 5,000 and 10,000 mg/L, with chloride concentrations of 1,000 to 2,000 mg/L and sulfate concentrations of 2,000 to 6,000 mg/L.The mine water is treated using advanced treatment technology to produce clean water for discharge or reuse. The treatment process comprises aeration, softening, filtration, reverse osmosis (RO) reject softening, evaporation, crystallization, final effluent remineralization and sludge dewatering. The solid waste generated in the treatment process is landfilled on site. The leachate is sent back to the facility’s thermal treatment process. Because no liquid waste leaves the property, this plant is termed a zero liquid waste (ZLW) facility.The advanced water treatment system was built to meet a new 218 mg/L regulatory limitation imposed by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection for chlorides discharged to surface waters. The system is designed to treat a maximum flow of approximately 795 m3/h (5 million gpd) of mine water. The treatment process utilizes RO membrane treatment to achieve the effluent criteria, and evaporation and crystallization technology to manage the RO concentrate from the water treatment process. As a result, the system produces clean water for discharge while generating zero liquid waste. The effluent water can be used for industrial purposes or discharged to a receiving stream. A water impact index (WIIx) study indicated that discharge of this high-quality water into the Monongahela River watershed may improve the water quality for downstream water users. The waste produced in the treatment process, including softening sludge and salt, is disposed of in an onsite landfill. Currently, the plant is treating at an average flow of 490 m3/h (3.1 million gpd) of mine water with an average influent chloride concentration of 1,530 mg/L and an average effluent chloride concentration of 11 mg/L."

The first power transmission cable tunnel in Singapore was the 2.6km long undersea tunnel between Pulau Seraya and mainland Singapore, constructed in the1980s. Ten years later, similar concepts were used for the Tuas Cable Tunnel. The tunnel, which includes a 2.2km long immersed tube section, was designed to accommodate 10power circuits of 400kV and 230kV capacity. It is fully equipped with sophisticated control and communication equipment, fire suppressant and life safety systems plus a maintenance vehicle which runs on tracks through the length of the tunnel. The paper discusses the planning, design, and construction of the Tuas tunnel, and the development of these concepts for future tunnels.

An incremental-analysis-based stope design and cutoff grade calculation method was developed for an underground metal mine project. Traditional stope design methods are typically very time consuming and lack consistency and accuracy by manually drawing stope shapes. For quick reserve calculation and economic analysis, a new method named "3D incremental analysis based stope design" was created for mine-wide stope designs. The key idea of this method is to replace engineers' manual checking of each incremental ring with one calculation of all the rings, and to build the final stope shape with the maximum values. This process was realized through a 3D ring grid setup and proper naming conventions for rapid calculations. With this unique but practical method, multiple options for a mine design were completed within a short time before the final selection of optimal cutoff grade and best stope designs for the project.

[The Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corporation, a. mall company engaged in producing coal in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, is currently engaged in a struggle of destiny to increase their production from inclined seam operation to compete with highly mechanized horizontal bed mines. This paper introduces some of the problems encountered it pitch seam mining as they apply to the convention, room and pillar system employed at the present time. Further described is the test work now being conducted to overcome these obstacles with an. attendant increase in productivity. Included in this test work is a mining machine designed especially for pitching seams, an automated longwall, and hydraulic mining of the latter compared with those of conventional work presently employed.]

"More than 6,300 people attended SME’s 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ and many of them made the trip to the conference to take part in the excellent technical sessions that are presented on a yearly basis by the Society.Holding true to form, this year’s conference was full of options. In fact, this year there were 121 technical sessions and 751 presentations to chose from. The following is a sample of some of the technical sessions as seen through the eyes of the editors of Mining Engineering and SME technical papers.SME Sections Sharing Success: Changing thePublic Perception of MiningThis session was a workshop on how several local sections were effective in getting the message out to their communities and schools about the value of the extractive minerals industry. Several sections shared their outreach successes, including the Mining in Society merit badge activities by the Minnesota Section by Julie Lucas and SME’s participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan by Frank McAllister.Dan Alexander highlighted activities by the Pittsburgh Section, such as preparing minerals kits and pamphlets for elementary school classes and regional science fairs. The West Virginia University Student Chapter used the kits as handouts at their local gem and mineral show. School speakers in full mining gear were especially interesting to the young children.Other speakers were Michael Linn, Paradise Valley Unified School District — Business and School Partnerships; and Greg Kruse, Central Wyoming Section of SME — What makes a successful section?Engineering Competency ModelAmerican Association of Engineering Societies and the U.S. Department of Labor, with a grant from the United Engineering Foundation, developed a guide to the set of skills necessary for success in the engineering community -- Knowledge – Skills – Abilities — needed for all disciplines.Various engineering societies are now writing the Tier 5 occupation-specific requirements. Southern Ohio Coal Company (SOCCO) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have identified techniques to optimize the use of scrubbers on continuous miners. The techniques provide maximum respirable dust control while maintaining a high output. The use of radio remote control and scrubber help to achieve greater advance between lifts by locating the operator in fresh air during the mining cycle. He is also kept away from newly exposed roof, which is not supported. An alternative to fan-powered scrubber was also evaluated at SOCCO. A high-pressure water-powered scrubber system eliminated the noise associated with fans, and achieved an intrinsically safe system. Experience in the use of these scrubber systems and remote control at SOCCO are discussed.

The Robe River Iron Ore Project began in 1962 when Cliffs International acquired mining leases in Western Australia's Pilbara Region. Initial reserves were proven and bulk ore samples sent to the U.S.A. for pilot plant testwork. Cliffs Western Australian Mining Company Pty. Limited (30%) manages the project in joint venture with Mitsui Iron Ore Development Pty. Limited (30%), Robe River Limited (35%) and Cape Lambert Iron Associates (5%).

The Atlantic City iron mine is located in Fremont County in central Wyoming, near the historic gold mining camps of Atlantic City and South Pass City. The mine lies on the southeast flank of the Wind River Mountains at an elevation of about 2,470 m (8,100 ft) above sea level (Fig. 1). An 81-h M2 (200-acre) tailings impoundment at the Atlantic City taconite operation has been a source of blowing dust. The site qualified for reclamation under Wyoming&apos;s Abandoned Mine Land (AML) reclamation program. The ultimate reclamation construction incorporated commercially available organic amendments and fertilizers into a 300-mm- (12-in.-) thick cap of a sterile clay loam cover material. The water level was lowered in an adjacent flooded mine pit that was feeding uncontrolled seeps into the tailings basin. A wide tailings pond spillway was built that allows flood control while minimizing seasonal water-level fluctuations in the pond. Rock berms and rock snow fences were built for wind-erosion control and soil-moisture preservation. Future work includes tree planting in the protective wind/ snow shadows of rock berms and rock snow fences and plugging a decant pipe. US Steel opened the Atlantic City iron mine in August 1962. It closed in 1983. Taconite iron ore was mined by surface methods. The ore was magnetically separated from the waste. The magnetic concentrate was mixed with bentonite, formed into pellets and roasted to produce a blast furnace feed stock for US Steel&apos;s blast furnaces in Geneva, UT. The pellets were hauled by rail to the Geneva Iron Works. The Atlantic City Mine produced three types of wastes. These included waste rock overburden from mining, a coarse-grained (sand to small-gravel sized), nonmagnetic reject rock termed "cobbs" and fine-grained tailings ranging from 600 to 75 µm (28 to <200 mesh).
