Man’s search beneath the earth for minerals has always required light, and the devices used to provide illumination have been both innovative and unusual —from stone vessels holding fat and a wick of grass or fiber to a shower of sparks produced by a thin steel disc. While the date when lamps were first used in mines is unknown, Greek and Roman records from 3000 BC definitely mention their use in underground mines. Early Remans most likely used a lamp similar to the one depicted at right. Over the ages, various types of devicives and methods of illumination have been tried and used. One interesting scheme for underground light was to reflect sunlight down the shaft and along drifts using mirrors or other reflective materials. Bunches of resinous wood were also used for underground lighting in many parts of England. In the mid-18th century, the speding mill was developed in England. It worked by rapidly turning a thin steel disc against a flint, causing a shower of sparks to appear. The light produced was uncertain, highly variable, and unsafe in gaseous environments. In Europe, an open pan-type hanging oil lamp was developed and used in some operations in the 1700s. This type of lamp had one opening for a wick and a second opening for refilling the oil reservoir. The lamps were embellished with goad luck charms – a good luck rooster was used in many parts of Europe while a frog and “gluck-auf” were used in Germany. These lamps were introduced in Mexican mines, and a few have found their way into the southwest US. By 1850, a small wick lamp known as the lard-oil lamp, which resembled a tea pot, was invented in Scotland. These lamps were fueled with grease from a packing house –lard, bacon grease, or tallow. Whale oil was also used. Many improvements were made on these lamps, such as the use of windshields and the attachment of miners’ candle-holdm to support the lamp. While these lamps were handy and inexpensive to operate, they were dangerous because their large flame could ignite support timbers or other flammable materials. Miners from the United Kingdom brought this type of lamp into the US. Domestic producers of oil wick lamps were primarily located in Hazleton, PA; What Cheer, IA; Pittsburgh, PA; and Frostburg, IN. The Upgraded Coal Interest Group (UCIG), focuses on clean, low-cost options for coal-based power generation via pre-combustion, co-firing and reburn options. Its mission is to preserve and expand the economic use of coal for energy. By reducing the fuel costs and environmental impacts of coal-fired power generation, existing units become more cost effective and thus new units utilizing advanced combustion technologies are more likely to be coal-fired. Two great forces are reshaping the power generation industry, the Clean Air Act Amendment and deregulation of generation. The Clean Air Act Amendment is forcing change by making it necessary for power producers to plan for reducing emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides and possibly trace elements. At the same time, deregulation of generation is forcing utilities to focus their attention closely on the short term impact of any change on cost of power. Fuel is a utility's largest cost element; maximum fuel flexibility will be a utility's best weapon in an environment of rapid change. In a regulated environment, a utility was limited in how involved he might get into fuel supply, in a purely deregulated environment he need only be guided by the impact on the bottom line. It is clear that these two forces will promote a close look at factors such as coal upgrading which can have an impact on the availability of low sulfur coal or emission of NOX and trace elements.

Computer Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy (CCSEM) analyses of sediment samples from coastal regions of Kerala and Tamil Nadu states and the heavy mineral deposits of Chavara, South India, show large lateral differences in the titanium content in ilmenite due to varying degrees of iron leaching. As the depositional environments for the sands with varying degrees of ilmenite alteration are comparable, the cause for the different degree of alteration is due to differences in the primary source of the ilmenite or to differences in the geochemical history of the ilmenite grains during transport from source to deposit. The CCSEM analyses of the heavy mineral fractions show that source of sediments with a high content of titanium-enriched ilmenites, mainly the heavy mineral deposit around Chavara, resides in the khondalite belt of South India (granulite facies metasediments). The less titanium-enriched ilmenites are sourced from other rocks in the area such as the charnokites. Those conclusions are based on the high MgO content in the leached ilmenites, chemical composition of the accompanying garnets (low CaO and high MgO), and the concentration of aluminum-rich minerals in the sands.

NFPA 502, Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges and Other Limited Access Highways establishes minimum fire protection and fire life safety requirements for road tunnels, bridges and other roadways where access by emergency responders is physically limited. The 2008 edition of NFPA 502 represents the Technical Committee?s consensus of current best practice for fire protection and life safety requirements for road tunnels, bridges and similarly limited access highways. Research of national and international test programs, design guidelines and regulating standards was per-formed and considered in an effort to establish a singular, comprehensive document representing a recognized base threshold of fire safety in these type facilities. This paper provides an overview of the more significant revisions including the application of fixed fire suppression systems, guidance on tenable environment, protection of structure and dangerous goods transport.

Sixty percent of the mines responding to the sixth annual Mining Cost Service labor survey reported increases in wages averaging 3.4% over the preceding 12 months. Only one mine reported a decrease in wages and this was accompanied by initiation of a substantial profit-sharing plan. Thirty-nine percent reported no change in wages. Thirty-seven percent reported using some form of incentive bonus plan. Mining Cost Service annually surveys coal, metal, and industrial mineral mines throughout the United States. Information about wages, benefits, and incentive bonus plans is part of an extensive data collection program to monitor cost areas of significance to the mining industry. This year, 131 mines responded to the survey. The data is collected by sending questionnaires to personnel managers at active mining operations. The information included in this article was taken from the returned forms, from labor contracts provided by some of the mines, and from followup telephone calls. This year's data was collected between November 1988 and February 1989.

The combined 78th Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 66th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 19 and 20, 2005, in Duluth, MN. More than 300 mining professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and suppliers, from throughout the United States and eastern Canada attended the meeting. This year’s theme was “Global Demand: A Window of Opportunity.” The meeting included a keynote address, technical presentations and a trade show. The atmosphere at this year’s meeting was upbeat. The iron ore mining industry in Minnesota is experiencing one of its biggest turnarounds in history. Because of greater demand, iron ore prices increased 20 percent during 2004 and 71.5 percent so far in 2005.

"The Teck Highland Valley copper (THVC) mine is located approximately 55 km (34 miles) southwest of Kamloops and approximately 20 km (12 miles) west of Logan Lake, BC, Canada (Fig. 1). Mining at THVC is conducted at three openpit operations comprised of Valley, Lornex and Highmont with a total annual output on the order of 300 kt (330,000 st) copper concentrate and 5 kt (5,500 st) of molybdenum concentrate. The Phase 8 pushback in the Valley Pit (Fig. 2) was mined from 2011 to 2016. Successful slope steepening occurred in the later stage of the pushback with the implementation of presplit blasting in 2015 and 2016.This article summarizes the investigation and design approach including: structural analysis, kinematic assessments of bench breakback potential, development of discrete fracture networks (DFNs) to characterize discontinuity fabric, rockfall modelling, 2D anisotropic limit equilibrium and 2D distinct element modelling, assessment of potential kinematic failure modes affecting double benches with 3D distinct element modelling and improved blasting techniques using e-dets. THVC is currently undertaking a mine life expansion involving the pushback of the west wall of the Valley Pit above Phase 8 to extend the mine life to 2029. Engineering geologyThe east wall slope in the Valley Pit is comprised of a 350-m (1,148-ft) thick sequence of glacial valley sediments that occur along the Highland Valley (Fig. 2), exposing an overburden slope up to about 225-m (740-ft) high below the crest of the ultimate east wall. The glacial overburden units consist of pro-glacial outwash and glaciofluvial deposits, glacial outwash sands and gravels interbedded with till and alluvial fans consisting of cross-bedded sands and sandy-gravels. Lacustrine sediments occur within the mid to lower portion of the glacial sequence and contain intervals of low-shear-strength clays and silts. Two large (1.3 and 7 Mt or 1.4 and 7.7 million st) waste rock buttresses were required to maintain slope stability using slot-cut and fill mining methods, as described in Fortin et al. (2011).The Valley porphyry deposit occurs in the central portion of the late Upper Triassic Guichon Creek Batholith, which intrudes assemblages of the Permian Cache Creek and Upper Triassic Nicola groups. The Valley deposit occurs in an area of intense fracturing near the intersection of the northerly trending Lornex Fault and the northwest to westerly trending Highland Valley Fault."

A review is undertaken of existing mathematical models of compaction process in roll press. The example of plane-strain, plane-stress model is presented together with comparisons between computed and experimentally recorded pressure distribution in roll nip region. Next, the discrepancies between predicted and measured values are discussed and practical method based on experimental optimization of compaction process using laboratory roll press is proposed. Examples of the selection of optimum roll press operating parameters for calcium oxide fines, sodium chloride and iron oxide dust are presented to illustrate advantages of the method. Finally scale up procedure is discussed for estimating the performance of commercial size roll press based on the data collected on laboratory size equipment.

At Ok Tedi, ore type and SAG feed size distribution vary widely and frequently. This makes control of the SAG mills by application of the power/pressure relationship difficult. Power logic has traditionally been conservative due to power spikes associated with rapid size distribution changes. A new expert system was installed in early 2000. The system incorporates multiple state fuzzy logic to deal with frequent and radical ore type and size variations, along with monitoring of motor temperatures. A short term power spike no longer warrants immediate radical action. This has resulted in increased mill throughput and improved circuit stability.

Experience has shown that, since the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, over-compaction of spoil during the reclamation process has severely limited tree growth on reclaimed land. Researchers at the University of Kentucky have conducted a ten-year investigation at a surface mine in eastern Kentucky that monitored the changes in selected spoil physical characteristics for various reclamation and compaction alleviation methods. More specifically, research plots were developed for reforestation that employed three different levels of compaction and two different methods of ripping for overly compacted spoil. Each year measurements were made in the field of dry bulk density, using a nuclear density gage, and maximum penetration depth, using a recording cone penetrometer. In addition to good correlation between tree growth and selected spoil characteristics, the data demonstrated a gradual convergence of the measured spoil characteristic data over the study period.

To reduce fire hazards from spontaneous combustion of coal in longwall gob areas, a series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to model the spontaneous heating of coal in longwall gob areas. The previous modeling results demonstrate that spontaneous heating of coal usually occurred behind the longwall shields and along the face with a bleeder ventilation system. Assuming a stationary longwall face, the spontaneous heating could turn to a spontaneous fire in several days for the most reactive coal under favorable conditions. When the longwall face advances, the spontaneous heating process will be significantly affected. In this study, the effect of longwall face advance on the spontaneous heating in the gob area is investigated using the CFD model developed in previous studies. One longwall panel with a bleeder ventilation system is simulated. The width of the panel is 300 m (984 ft), while the length of the panel is changed between 1,000 to 2,000 m (3,280 to 6,560 ft). The same permeability and porosity profiles are used for gobs with different lengths. The spontaneous heating first develops in the gob when the longwall face is stationary. Then, the face advances at a certain rate. The face advance is simulated as a series of discrete movements, and the effect of the face advance on the maximum temperature developed during the face stoppage is examined.

"Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) occurs in many countries around the world, and provides a source of livelihood to many impoverished local people in areas where it occurs. This paper reports the role of female participants and reasons why they engage in ASM. Field visits were made to 12 ASM sites located in the Tarkwa Mining District of Ghana to conduct interviews with male diggers and female participants. It was observed that over 100 women between the ages of 18 and 50 participate in ASM for survival. They engage in ASM largely because they have no alternative employable skills and income sources. These female participants depend on ASM to sustain the lives of their dependents. INTRODUCTION Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) conventionally involves use of rudimentary tools (such as picks, shovels, chisels and hammers) to exploit precious minerals and metals from the ground. It has been a major source of livelihood to many impoverished local people for more than a century. In many instances, it is the only source of income to indigenous people who have no alternative employable skills. The World Bank estimated that more than 100 million people around the world benefit from ASM which largely occurs in developing countries in Asia, Africa, Oceania, and South and Central America (World Bank, 2013). Cobalt, which is used in lithium-ion batteries to power cellphones, laptop computers, and electric vehicles, is largely produced by artisanal miners in Congo (The Washington Post, 2016). In Sudan, ASM is a significant contributor to the national economy, accounting for about 85% of total gold extracted yearly from 2010 to 2015 (Ibrahim, 2015). Also, according to the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Washington DC, USA, 90% of mineral export in Sierra Leone can be attributed to thriving artisanal diamond mining in the country (Sierra Leone Embassy, 2016). In Ghana, the ASM sector was recognized by government as a multimillion industrial activity, and through a series of initiatives, it was legalized by promulgating the Small Scale Gold Mining Law of 1989 (PNDCL 218). Presently, artisanal mining is widely practiced in two forms: licensed (registered), sometimes referred to as formal ASM, and unregistered (informal or illegal) operations, popularly called “galamsey”, a name believed to have been derived from “gather and sell” by ancient miners who could not communicate in the English language with European/British miners. The ASM sector in Ghana, like other countries, has seen a rise in female participation over the years. A report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) indicated that women account for about 15% of total workforce in ASM in Ghana, and up to 50% in Africa (ILO, 1999). Other researchers have also estimated women participants in ASM to be between 30 and 70% in Africa (Hinton et al., 2003a; Hinton et al. 2003b; Hilson, 2002). Presently, there is no reliable data from Ghanaian authorities on number of females engaged in ASM. However, data obtained from 15 ASM sites suggest that at least 40% of the employees are women. It is expected that a similar trend exists across ASM operations in Ghana."

There are numerous mines throughout the world that have open pit highwalls developed partially or wholly in soil or soil-like materials. Soil-like materials are considered to include soils (either transported or residual) and highly weathered rock, which may have soil-like behavior. These materials generally have characteristics or material properties that vary considerably from those of moderately weathered or fresh rock. Given these differences, it is important to consider the characteristics of soil-like materials to design safe open pit slopes. In the design of open pit slopes in soil-like materials, it is important to recognize the behavior of these materials is strongly dependent upon their mineralogy, degree of weathering, cementation, stress history, depositional history, and presence of water. As a result, soil-like materials may contain one or more of the following characteristics that can have a significant effect slope stability and design: - Relict structural features (joints, faults, etc), - Sensitivity to moisture (both wetting and drying), - Zones of alteration with variable strength and drainage characteristics, - Zones of low permeability creating perched ground water conditions, and - Undrained and drained strain softening or strain hardening behavior.

The paper will describe Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) as a tool which will enable us to build a project ?virtually? on a computer before constructing and operating it in the real world. VDC computer models are built, using information from various sources including survey, 3D laser scanning, CAD and GIS to represent the project and its components in a coordinated and consolidated infrastructure model. This model is reviewed and evaluated by, and shared among project teams including owners, con-tractors, designers, engineers, construction managers, stakeholders and operators. It allows teams to fix costly design and construction issues before construction on site. Benefits and lessons learned from global projects will be discussed

Monitoring slope displacement in open-pit mines can help predict collapses and prevent serious damage, injuries, and fatalities. Early detection of movement may indicate the need to modify slope geometry, initiate dewatering if the slope is wet, or consider artificial support measures such as cable bolting. Slope monitoring at the Berkeley pit was carried out with varying degrees of intensity and continuity for about 15 years. Some of the old mine records are still intact and accessible. Slope monitoring data can therefore be collected and published for the benefit of other mine operators. Because prediction of slope failures is empirical in nature, publication of several well documented case studies will be a valuable contribution to the industry. Background - Berkeley pit Open-pit mining of copper from the Berkeley pit, located on the east side of Butte, MT, began in 1955 and ceased in 1982. During that time, about 1 Gt (1.2 billion st) of material were removed to form a pit about 1.8 km wide by 2.1 km long (6000 ft by 7000 ft) at the rim, and 550 m (1800 ft) deep as measured from the high hill on the northwest side. From the south side, the pit only measures 365 m (1200 ft) deep. The Berkeley pit was first owned and operated by Anaconda Minerals Co., and subsequently by Arco. Following its closure in April 1982, the mine began to fill with water. Washington Construction purchased the property in 1986, and Montana Resources Inc. began mining to the east of the Berkeley pit in July 1986. Numerous instances of slope failure were recorded during the course of mining and several intensive geotechnical investigations were conducted in an effort to optimize the mine design. One of the last and most comprehensive studies was initiated in 1977. For purposes of geotechnical analysis, the mine was divided into nine design sectors on the basis of geologic conditions, geographic orientation, and economic importance (Fig. 1). Only two of these sectors - the concentrator and the southeast corner - are considered here. Material properties were obtained from several studies of samples collected from the mine and adjacent areas. INTRODUCTION Mine No. 95 of the Consolidation Coal Co., a divi¬sion of Continental Oil Co., is located in Shinnston, WV. Mine No. 95 was opened in January 1967 and has been operating continuously since that time. The mine has 544 hourly and salaried employees. In 1974 this mine was the largest coal producer in West Virginia. Opera¬tions include two longwall sections and eight Marietta Borer continuous miners. Originally there were also two Jeffrey Heliminer continuous miners, but use of these was discontinued in June 1978. Production averages 12 727 t/d (14,000 stpd). Two portals now service the mine with a third portal proposed for 1978. GEOLOGY Mining takes place in the Pittsburgh coal seam which dips 0.04 rad (21h°) northwest. The working seam is steam coal with an average height of 2.2 m (86 in.). Immediately above the seam, the overburden is com¬posed of 6.1 m (20 ft) of shales followed by 6.1 m (20 ft) of weak sandstone and 51.8 (170 ft) of shaley limestone. The shale weathers when exposed to mois¬ture. Surface water has been a problem due to a fire¬clay floor which turns to paste when mixed with water. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The present mining plan for Consol's No. 95 mine has a proposed life of 35 to 40 years. One set of main headings has been driven in the north direction and one set in a western direction. These are the areas in which the majority of the virgin coal lies. The panels are driven off of the mains at 2134 to 3048-m (7,000 to 10,000-ft) intervals. The continuous mining sections are set up 133 x 610 m (600 x 2000 ft). Longwall sections are 259 x 1220 m (850 x 7000 ft). All of these mining sections are retreating uphill. Development is with continuous miners. A Marietta Borer miner is used for the main development work. These miners cut 4.1 m (13 ft 6 in.) wide and 2.1 m (7 ft) high, leaving an arch cut. Along with the arch, a 152.4-mm (6-in.) thick layer of roof coal is left in place to protect the roof from weathering. The combi¬nation of the self-supporting arch and the roof coal al¬lows the entries to be driven 30.5 m (100 ft) without bolting. Full bolting, however, is carried outby the last open crosscut. This bolting is done on 1.5 x 1.5-m (5 x 5-ft) centers using 1.5-m (5-ft) long roof bolts with tandem anchors and 152.4-mm (6-in.) steel washer plates. When needed, crib blocks with a 50.4-mm (2-in.) drill hole are used as supplemental supports. Three-hole steel channel with the ends curved down¬ward to conform to the borer arch may also be used. In the mining sections, a 14 BU loader is used be¬hind the Marietta miner to load two Torkar shuttle cars. These haul to Long-Airdox feeder breakers which load onto a 1.07-m (42-in.) wide conveyor belt. With the exception of the shuttle cars, which use 275-V d-c power, the face equipment operates on 550-V a-c power. The main power line is 7200 V ac. The same loading and hauling equipment is used with the Marietta Borer miner for driving both panel and development entries. In the retreat sections, the same equipment with the exception of the miner is utilized. Because of the advantage of a variable cutting hight, Jeffrey Heliminer ripper-type continuous miners were employed in these retreat sections. For longwall mining the first unit uses an Eickoff EDW 300-L double-drum ranging shearer. Drum di¬ameter is 1.69 m (66 in.) with a drum rotation speed of 45 rpm. The drum is equipped with 48 Carmet 34-L-1 bits. The 300-kW (400-hp) motor operates on 1000 V. Tramming of the shearer head is done through a hydraulically driven 26-mm wide chain. Maximum cutting speed is 7.93 m/min (26 fpm), and maximum tram speed is 12.8 m/min (42 fpm) with an average cutting speed of 3.66 m/min (12 fpm). Web cutting depth is 762 mm (30 in.) and the cutting height is 2.13 m (7 ft). The conveyor width is 686 mm (27 in.). It uses a single chain, 26 mm thick, with flights on 0.91-m (3-ft) spacing. The face conveyor speed is 64.3 m/min (211 fpm) when driven by two 112-kW (150-hp) 1000-V Louis Allis motors through torque convertors. The roof support used is Gullick Dobson chocks [6-legged 77.3 t (85 st) per leg, 463.6 t (510 st) total capacity] with double-acting leg jacks. The hydraulic pressure for the legs is 13.8 MPa (2000 psi), and the hydraulic pressure for rams is 6.8 MPa (1000 psi). The yield valves are set at 57.8 MPa (8500 psi). Each chock weighs 4.09 t (4.5 st). The stage loader is an Eickoff drive, with a 68-kW (90-hp), (00-V Reliance motor. A 26-mm thick single strand chain with flights on 0.6-m (2-ft) centers runs at 75.89 m/min (249 fpm). The stage loader is self-advancing and is connected to the belt tail piece with a special fifth wheel attachment so that the stage loader can advance and guide the tail piece. The hydraulic pressure for the roof support is supplied by two 45-kW (60-hp) Reliance motors op¬erating on 699 V, with 1.26 L/s (20 gpm) constant volume Gullick hydraulic pumps. Each pump services alternate chocks, with the two pressure lines connected at the tailgate by 25.4-mm (1-in.) hydraulic hoses, rated at 27.21 MPa (4000 psi). The 6.8 MPa (1000 psi) pressure rams advance is supplied by a 45-kW (60-hp), 600-V Reliance motor and a 1.26-L/s (20-gpm) con¬stant volume Gullick pump. Return lines are 35.5-mm (1.4-in.) diam hydraulic hoses with rated capacity of 27.21 MPa (4000 psi). The fluid used in the hydraulic system consists of 95% water and 5% Hy-chock fire resistant water soluble oil. Water is stored and mixed in a 6096-L (2000-gal) track-mounted tank and goes to a 655-L (180-gal) reservoir at the pump. The belt conveyor structure is 1.07 m (42 in.) wide with 0.47 rad (27°) idlers, bottom stands located on 3.05-m (10-ft) centers, top stands on 1.5-m (5-ft) centers, and is supported on a 19-mm (3/4-in.) diam

Looking back over the last 150 years or so, it is not hard to see that electricity has been a primary force in shaping human development. It has been a basic ingredient in our industrial revolutions that simultaneously improved the productivity, working and living conditions within our farms, factories, hospitals, offices and homes. Today, it has become an essential part of our daily life and our future. Amazingly, we keep finding new ways to use electricity to make our lives more safe, comfortable and productive. It is a great success story of human ingenuity, achievement and development. Demand for electricity The convenience and value of electricity has not gone unnoticed by consumers. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) (Energy Information Administration, 2009), electricity is the fastest growing form of energy in the world and during the next 20 years the world will likely consume twice as much of it as it does today. In 2008, almost 20,000 terawatt hours of electricity globally were consumed (Energy Information Administration, 2009). That is enough electricity to light up more than two million baseball stadiums or power more than 11 billion computers continuously for an entire year. Mining equipment and processing plants have become more efficient, mostly due to technological advances. The mining industry is now in a boom period, one that some analysts believe can sustain itself. But even with higher commodity prices, sky-rocketing energy costs and the costs associated with environmental and reclamation regulations have not allowed all mines to reach their full profitability potential.

With the revolutionary progress in information and computer technologies, applying the latest information technologies in metallurgical complexes has become a serious challenge to both a major opportunity and a serious challenge to both management and technical teams. The emerging component and object technologies are changing the way everyone can beneficially use their computer and networks to add to their corporate bottom lines. Most mining and metallurgical plants use predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis and special techniques, like vibration analysis and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. Process control strategies are installed in several metallurgical sites. All process equipment and control strategies require maintenance from local personnel at the mine. Integrated use of existing and emerging technologies is making it possible to implement an overall process effectiveness control index. This index is based on key indices such as losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency and rate of quality. The availability of real time and process history to identify the most critical part of the processing system from mechanical integrity is highlighted. An emerging plant integration paradigm is described to simplify the implementation of business enterprise resources management and distributed plant management systems.

Higher production, better safety standard, and potential for automation are some of the benefits of longwall mining. Today, longwall face advances at a faster rate exposing many diversified rock layers in a short period of time. It is now a serious challenge to cope with ground control problems such as roof falls, face and floor failure, and excessive shield loading as fast as possible to minimize production and monetary losses. In Illinois coal mines, the existence of weak floor strata blow the coal seam may pose additional problems related to floor heaving, shield base punching, and associated roof and face falls. In this study, the effects of weak floor on longwall ground control are analyzed using two-dimensional finite element models. A two-leg 635.6-ton (700-short-ton) yielding capacity shield is included in the models to evaluate the effects of different thickness and material properties of the weak floor. The study indicates that the thickness and material properties of weak floor have significant effects on shield loading, the distribution and intensity of front abutment stress, failure zones in the surrounding strata, roof-to-floor convergence, and floor punching by the shield base.
