The Ore Mountains in Germany have a history of more than 850 years of underground mining activity. This has created a situation where thousands of old mine shafts and adits are due for rehabilitation. While no long-term stable rehabilitation was executed in previous centuries, those abandoned mine sites which date back to the uranium mining boom from 1945 to 1962 were rehabilitated immediately after mine closure according to state-of-the art technology. Over the years, however, it has become obvious that most of these sites are not long-term stable and thus it has become necessary to rehabilitate them a second time. Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg is carrying out a research project on the optimization of this process. 70 mine site rehabilitation projects, the technology and the materials used have been assessed. A technical guideline for future rehabilitation projects, based on the outcomes of this assessment, is under development with the goal to make it easier, faster and more economical to select and apply suitable designs and construction materials for dams, plugs and other rehabilitation structures in former uranium mines.

The objective of the experiment was to investigate the efficiency of hindered-settling column in recovering carbon from anthracite. Two types of Korean anthracites were prepared for feed materials. Each sample was crushed and classified by size, and washability analyses were performed. Separation efficiency was evaluated under various operating conditions using a laboratory scale hindered settling column. Results showed that the carbon recovery was higher for the smaller sizes, but the purity of the product was better for the larger sizes. In, overall, 2-0.21mm particles of 40-45 % ash could be processed into about 20 % ash products.

Newmont roasting plant in Carlin, Nevada commenced operating in December 1994. Over the years, refractory ores and pyrite concentrates from different gold deposits constituted the feed to the facilities. Historical plant performance indicated that the roasting temperature was the main variable that affected the structural characteristics of the calcine which, in turn, affected the recovery of gold by cyanidation. Gold recovery as a function of roaster temperature was closely monitored since October 2000. Original design temperature was 550oC. Lower roaster temperatures of around 500oC resulted in gold recovery increase by more than 6 percent. This increase was directly related to an increase of the surface area of the calcine. The implementation of an “intelligent” process control system helped significantly in achieving steady low roasting temperatures thus achieving high gold recoveries between 92 and 93 percent. Under those conditions, several roasting campaigns with high-arsenic-containing ores were conducted, which resulted in a significant decrease of gold recovery. The reduced gold recovery was caused by the loss of surface area (e.g. porosity) of the calcine as the arsenic content of the roaster feed increased.

Improvements in miners? safety and health, as reflected by injury and illness statistics, have reached a plateau and even been reversed. Research into miners' OSH is a necessary adjunct to regulatory enforcement. Under the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) mining experts have come together to draft a national agenda for this research. The Mining Sector Council, one of ten NORA Sector Councils, has produced a draft national research agenda to guide all mining research entities: academia, government, and industry. The agenda has seven major objectives, each of which has a sequence of sub-objectives: Reduce the likelihood of disasters in mines; Improve mine disaster response; Improve the health of miners; Improve atmospheric control (ventilation) in mines; Improve health and safety through behavioral research; Improve mine design, systems operations, and management performance to enhance mine health and safety; Apply ergonomics, human factor engineering, to increase health and safety. Long-term maintenance of the Mining Research Agenda requires input from the public, both here and abroad, monitoring of the impact of research results using OSH data, and partners who will translate the research to practice.

Simulated weathering tests are used to estimate leachate quality of rocks containing varying concentrations of pyrite and carbonates at mines. This study reports the inter-laboratory results from the third phase of a three part effort to develop a standardized, reproducible simulated weathering test for coal mine overburden. Initial development in phases I and II included evaluation of different test apparatus, effects of particle size, gas composition, leaching frequency and other variables. Phases I and II results are reported by Brady et al (2004) and Hornberger et al (2004). In Phase III, a standard column leaching protocol was used by eight commercial, government and university labs to test five rocks of different lithology, pyrite and carbonate content. Ideally, a simulated weathering test should have three characteristics to be useful in mine drainage studies. These include the capability to produce repeatable results, accuracy in simulating field conditions, and a concise test protocol of weeks to a few months. Simulated weathering, or kinetic testing, produces an effluent that simulates mine drainage composition. This can be beneficial for predicting mine drainage quality in comparison to whole rock analyses. The effluent may be tested for the same water quality parameters as the drainage produced during mining, such as pH, acidity, alkalinity, sulfate, iron, manganese, aluminum or other parameters. If the physical, chemical, and biological conditions of the kinetic tests are representative of those found in the mine environment, leachate composition may be used to estimate the water quality parameter concentrations produced during mining. Hornberger and Brady (1998), and Geidel et al (2000), compiled comprehensive chapters on kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction. These sources included: (1) a chronology and synopsis of scientific literature on these kinetic tests as they have developed over approximately 50 years, (2) discussion of the influence of physical, chemical, and biological processes, and (3) general guidelines for test procedures, data interpretation, and recommendations for further research to develop standard methods. Most of the kinetic test methods in use today were substantially developed and applied more than 40 or 50 years ago, including leaching columns (Braley, 1949), humidity cells (Hanna and Brant, 1962), Soxhlet reactors (Pedro, 1961), and field scale tests (Glover and Kenyon, 1962). . The most commonly used kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction are leaching columns and humidity cells. While these kinetic test methods and others have been used in hundreds of mine drainage studies as shown in Hornberger and Brady (1998) and other references (e.g. Sorini, 1997), they have rarely been used in coal mine permitting by either regulatory agencies or the mining industry. The major impediment to routine use of kinetic test methods is the variation in the design and operation of these kinetic tests, and lack of a standardized, accepted (e.g. by EPA or ASTM) test method. Interpretation and data comparison from different studies can be difficult. METHODS Five rocks of varying lithology, mineralogy, carbonate and pyrite content were collected in bulk from Pennsylvanian age coal measures in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Indiana. Mineralogical composition of the samples was characterized in detail by Hammerstrom et al (in press) using optical, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe methods. Acid Base Accounting (Sobek et al 1978; Skousen et al, 1997, Kania, 1998) was performed on bulk samples for % total sulfur (%S) as a measure of pyrite and potential acid generation, and Neutralization Potential (NP) as an index of carbonate content. A modified NP test, following the procedure suggested by Skousen et al, 1997 was also conducted for four of the five samples. The modified NP test accounts for initial acid consumption, Fe oxidation, and subsequent Fe hydrolysis by the iron carbonate mineral siderite. Siderite, even though it is a carbonate gives zero net alkalinity. Lithologic, Acid Base Accounting and general mineral composition data for the five rocks are shown in table 1 (see Appendix). Whole rock elemental analysis for major and trace elements was conducted on a sub-sample of each rock type. One laboratory was contracted to mix, homogenize, and size the bulk samples and prepare sub-samples for all the participating labs. Splits were sent to eight labs, and each organization was provided a detailed set of instructions for column assembly and leaching procedure. The protocol was developed based on results from phases 1and 2 of this study. The principal features of the column assembly are: a specific composition of particle size by weight (table 2), weekly leaching cycles, and incubation under humidified air containing 10% CO2. Figure 1 shows the column construction. [ ] The particle size distribution of the crushed rock sample is largely an artifact of the crushing process, rather than a natural systems process like the particle size distribution of a soil or an unconsolidated sedimentary deposit. The standardized particle size distribution, shown in Table 2, promotes operational consistency of the weathering test procedure, and provides better control over reaction kinetics. Large amounts of fine particles within specific zones of the leaching columns have been found to impede uniform fluid flow and/or gas flow (Hornberger and Brady, 1998). Regarding reaction kinetics, the importance of surface area to volume ratios has been described in a previous phase of this study (Brady et al., 2004), and significant differences in crushed particle size distributions and effective surface areas were found among the lithologic units. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to operate in parallel with, and supplement, its two existing main fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Carlsbad Area Office facility designed to permanently dispose of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for either modifying, supplementing, or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (McDaniel, et al., 1997) to: identify and quantify operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives, and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans, and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness, and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling constraints. WIPP is scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP's ability to declare facility readiness and had to minimize operational disruptions during the system tie-in. All engineering for the project is completed and physical modifications started in July 1997. The project was completed in 1998.

THE PROBLEM Two and a half years have gone by since the December, 1976 Civil Engineering article on subway costs caused such a furore. What has happened in this interval? Even after discounting the crushing inflation rate, costs are still increasing, and there is no sign of a turndown, even in the rate of increase. Some steps outlined in the article have been taken. In April this year, the first D.O.T.-sponsored Peer Review Group, made up of managers of other transit properties, met in Boston to review MBTA's $500 million Red Line Extension-Northwest for cost effectiveness. While the impact of a review at the end of the design phase, with substantial segments under contract, cannot be as effective as a review early in the design phase, it is nevertheless a start. This first meeting will be followed by a review of Boston's Orange Line relocation, the final design for which is just underway. In the industry at large two facts are evident: 1. We are failing to reduce underground construction costs. 2. Underground construction is in danger of pricing itself out of the market place. It has always been a greater challenge to design a Chevvy than to design a Cadillac, but it is the Chevvy we need today. Much attention has been focussed in the past on engineering design in the narrow sense: areas such as ground loading conditions and concrete design. D.G. Wilder I found the suggestion that the amount of displacement of a fault can be numerically related to the thickness of gouge or breccia to be both intuitively satisfying and intriguing. I have long agreed that there is some type of relationship between the amount of gouge and the amount of displacement of faults. I congratulate the author for developing a numerical relationship between them. However, I am concerned that the limits for applying this relationship be fully understood. An underlying assumption in this approach is that there is either a uniform thickness of gouge or breccia along a given fault or the thickness does not vary widely. Since it is not always possible to confirm this, the displacements derived by this method should be viewed with caution unless significant fault extent can be observed. At the Nevada Test Site, in drifts constructed in granite for test emplacement of spent nuclear reactor fuel, we found a fault with 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) of clay gouge. Within a few meters of this location, the fault had no clay gouge, but rather consisted of a highly fractured zone with significantly altered rock and some slickensides. Based on Fig. 1, the 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) thickness of gouge would indicate a displacement in excess of 30 m (98 ft). However, no gouge thickness would indicate essentially no displacement. Based on a quartz vein that terminated on the fault, and is not identified nearby, an estimated displacement of more than a few meters was made. This estimate is consistent with that obtained using the regression line proposed in the paper if the 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) thickness for the gouge is used. However, using the regression curves with zero thickness would not yield results consistent with what was observed in the field. Therefore, it is important to recognize that the suggested procedure would properly yield a range of probable displacements. ? *Work performed under the auspices of the US Department of Energy by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under Contract W-7405-Eng-48. Reply by E.C. Robertson It is certainly true that the t (thickness) of gg-bx (gouge and breccia) on a fault does vary along the fault. My observations have been that near the termination of a fault, the displacement d is small and the t is also small, whereas the maximum d and t will usually be found in the central part of the fault. The information on gg-bx and t of the fault found in granite in the NTS tunnel by Mr. Wilder could be interpreted somewhat differently than he does. He speaks of the fault changing within a few meters from 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) of clay gg to "a highly fractured zone with significantly altered rock and some slickensides," but no gg. The highly fractured rock may be taken to be bx, rock not so finely ground as gg but still crushed by the fault movement, equivalent to the gg in my usage, and probably occupying about the same t. Mr. Wilder's estimates for the fault in the NTS tunnel for t of 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) and for d of a quartz vein, in excess of "a few meters," would place the point on the low side of the central trend line in my Fig. 1, at the lower limit. There is, of course, a problem with determining d using displacement of only one planar surface. It would be greater or lesser depending on the rake of the movement. Finally, estimating the d of a fault from its t should be made with awareness of our present uncertainties, as pointed out by Mr. Wilder. Although the central trend line in my Fig. 1 has a ratio of d/t of 100, I have put the limiting ratios at 10 and 1000. Understanding of the values of the ratio will be improved only with collection of more data, for which the discussion of Mr. Wilder is much appreciated. G.C. Waterman E.C. Robertson's paper provides significant information to a geologist attempting to deduce fault offset by noting the products of structural dislocation. However, considerable mapping in underground and open-pit mines, and examination of structures produced in different geological settings, have convinced me that gouge and breccia thickness are controlled by geological conditions and fault movement. The following paragraphs suggest geological variables that control them. 1. Depth of Loading A near-surface fault resulting from tensional stress has more breccia/gouge than is produced by a similar stress at considerable depth. A deep-loaded compressional stress may produce a linear zone of schist, or structural dislocation may occur along an earlier formed belt of schist. Such "shear zones" are common in Canadian mines in precambrian rocks. In neither case can offset be directly deduced by an analysis of the minimal gouge/breccia in the shistose rocks. At greater depth, stress may be partially to wholly relieved by flowage. I vividly recall first noting the regional "Midas Thrust" in the Lark mine, Bingham Mining District, UT (where we called the structure the North Fault). My recorded notes, as I remember them, showed a narrow gouge streak separated the `Jordan" and "Commercial" limestone units from impure, muddy limestone beds of uncertain stratigraphic position. Powerful, easy to manipulate, ventilation modeling software is readily available to most mining engineers. Too often when preparing an initial ventilation model, engineers will go overboard in their design, creating a complex model with hundreds of branches. When, in practice, the creation of a less complicated ?to the point? model, containing a few well-constructed branches, would have delivered the same results. In this paper the author will demonstrate, by using actual feasibility report examples, that when designing a ventilation model, engineers should make more use of the K.I.S.S. (?Keep It Simple, Stupid?) Principle. As mining industry consultants we must continue to improve on, and deliver timely and cost-effective results to our customers.

As one of the main power sources, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) will continue to be applied on a large scale in the future market. Commercialized LIBs cathode materials contain various valuable metal elements including Li, Co, and Ni. The development of green and efficient recycling technology is essential. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have recently emerged as a new class of green solvents that could potentially be applied for the LIBs recycling industry due to their capability to leach the active materials without the introduction of environmentally hazardous reagents as used in conventional hydrometallurgy process. Considering the rapid progress, a critical review focusing on the progress and fundamentals about the overall efficiency has practical significance for the further advancement of this field. Herein, we briefly introduce the overall process of using DESs for LIBs recycling and specifically focus on the efficiency of each step. Current fundamental understandings and new experimental approaches to enhance the efficiency of the leaching process, the extraction process, and reusability are summarized. We expect this review article to inspire scientists to use DESs as powerful tools for advancing the frontiers of LIBs recycling.

On Nov 1, 2007 House Resolution 2262 ? The Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2007 ? was passed by the U.S. House by a vote of 244-166. HR-2262, among other things, would impose a 4-per-cent royalty on existing mines with commercial production and an 8-percent gross royalty on all new claims. Not surprisingly, this possible new law was one of the hottest topics of discussion at the Northwest Mining Association?s conference that this year returned to Spokane, WA for its 113th annual meeting on Dec. 3-7. More than 1,800 delegates attended the conference that was held under the banner theme of ?Mining ?. For today and tomorrow.? Northwest Mining Association executive director Laura Skaer was one of many speakers during the three-day conference to respond to the threat to the industry posed by HR-2262 with a presentation titled ?Potential changes to the 1872 Mining Law.? In the presentation that she first unveiled at the Alaska Miners Association?s convention and trade show on Nov. 8, Skaer laid out a comprehensive list of problems with HR-2262. In addition to the association?s obvious concerns about the proposed royalty, Skaer noted that the bill includes a mine veto provision that would allow the Secretary of the Interior the authority to deny an operations permit to a project if the secretary determines that the operation would cause undue degradation to public lands and resources. Potential massive withdrawals from mineral entry are also included in HR-2262. Among the lands that could be off limits to miners under HR-2262 are wilderness study areas, areas of environmental concern and 23.6 hm2 (58.5 million acres) identified as Roadless Rule. States, political subdivisions and Indian Tribes would also have more authority to withdraw lands, she said. To combat the proposed changes, Skaer made 10 trips to Washington D.C. on behalf of NWMA members in 2007. In her presentation at the annual meeting, she also objected to provisions that include no life-of-mine permits and uncertain permit renewals and new and duplicative environmental standards that she said are vague, ambiguous and inconsistent with current federal and state environmental laws. Rip van Winkle is back ? and he?s meaner than ever.?

Design and construction of temporary shafts for underground facilities often require evaluation of bottom stability due to rupture (blow-ins) caused by water pressure acting on a bottom plug. This paper provides an overview of shaft bottom stability evaluation methods for the case of a relatively watertight soil plug which overlies an artesian aquifer. Methods of considering plug perimeter shear, plug buckling and pressure relief are discussed. Minimum factors of safety are suggested. Future use of the shaft subgrade is also considered. Bottom plug failure case histories at several shafts are evaluated. This paper should be useful to project designers, ground support system design engineers and contractors involved with construction of shafts for underground facilities

Missouri River Division (FORD), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), has completed (October 1982) a study for the U.S. Air Force Ballistic Missile Office, in which desireable and needed changes in contracting methods for underground construction were identified. Due to the importance of geotechnical considerations in such construction, a good number of the resulting recommendations relate to geotechnical considerations. Corps contracts have traditionally served as models for contract documentation by public agencies and in private enterprise. Several standard features of present-day contracting methods were Corps innovations. Corps officials are generally in agreement with the recommendations of the Better Contracting reports published by the U.S. National Research Council (NAS/NRC), through its U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology (USNCTT). However, the findings of the 1982 MRD study indicate that additional changes are warranted for underground construction contracting methods; changes that deal specifically with site geological conditions, both known and to be reasonably anticipated, as well as with their associated impacts on construction. The 1982 MRD report identifies the need for nine specific improvements in geotechnical aspects of contracting; improvements based on recognition of geological conditions.

Operations at the Sweet Home Mine transformed the mineral specimen industry, not only in the development of new innovative extraction techniques, but also in the fields of sample preparation and marketing. Principally as a result of the activities at the Sweet Home Mine, there is now a better appreciation of minerals and the market they encompass. Individual Sweet Home rhodochrosite specimens have been sold for more than $1 million, with many more in the five- and six-figure dollar range. This article is a review of the Sweet Home operation, with emphasis on its extraction techniques. District history The Sweet Home Mine is located within the Alma mining district in the Mosquito Range of central Colorado, approximately 6 km (3.7 mile) northwest of the town of Alma at the base of the Red Amphitheatre in Buckskin Gulch at an elevation of 3,440 m (11,286 ft). Other nearby mining districts include Climax, Leadville, Breckenridge and London. All are considered part of central portion of the Colorado Mineral Belt (Fig. 1).

[New stochastic process models are developed to calculate the probability of various fill levels in section feeders as a function of vehicle interarrival times, payloads and feeder-discharge rates. These models may be utilized to establish the minimum feeder-discharge rate necessary to prevent a feeder, with a particular surge storage capacity, from constraining the section's production rate. In addition, it is shown how the output from these models may also be utilized to calculate the probability of various flow rates at junctions in the conveyor haulage network, enabling one to size gathering belts. The model provides a basis for optimizing, (in economic terms) capacity specifications for feeders and conveyor belts in the materials-handling system by considering tradeoffs in the size of the two types of units.]

Environmental and economic costs related to equipment fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission present a substantial challenge to the mining industry. Haul trucks are an integral part of the overall surface mining system and they consume a substantial quantity of fuel. Consequently, they produce a significant amount of CO2. The objective of this research is to (i) establish a mathematical relationship among a truck?s fuel consumption, power and engine load factors and (ii) determine the amount of a truck?s CO2 emission and the associated cost that may arise from potential CO2 legislation. In order to achieve these objectives we have considered original equipment manufacturer (OEM) haul trucks, commonly used in surface mining operations. The research presented here may be used by mining professionals to help determine the cost and environmental burden of the trucks? application, and efficiently manage energy consumption.

Information gathered while studying geological parameters that govern fine gold deposition in the a1luvial environment can be applied to the technological development and selection of fine gold recovery systems. It is recognized that substantial gold losses occur in the minus 1.5 mn (minus 12 mesh) fraction using conventional sluicing systems. Within the past two decades much attention has been given the design and efficiency of these thick bed concentrators. Studies and comparisons drew information from several foreign and domestic placer operations. These studies concentrated on: 1) the physical and chemical properties of alluvial gold 2) the parameters that control fine gold deposition 3) the geometrical form, components and general working structure of conventional sluicing systems 4) the physical properties which contribute to the overall efficiency of a sluice system 5) the comparison of three major styles of conventional sluicing systems. A dramatic improvement regarding fine gold recovery and water quality was observed when using modern multiple-channel sluicing systems in place of conventional single-channel sluicing systems.

A rock classification for drilling and boring is presented covering most equipment types and providing an estimation of the key parameters for operation, such as thrust and speed, and of performance such as penetration rate and bit life. Drilling and boring are significant and integral aspects of both the mining and heavy construction industries. Together these constitute over 20% of the G.N.P. Drilling and boring represent the most arduous mechanical processes performed in industry. Their misapplication quickly leads to equipment destruction, hazards, and to major delays. The classification is unified in two ways: 1) for a particular rock class several parameters can be estimated, 2) the classification integrates most excavating activities (i.e. digging, ripping and even blasting), and is derived from ground control. The rock classification provides a job property, based on fundamental and index properties, which yields quick and rough estimates of vital information. However it does not obviate the need for a more thorough analysis, and maintaining field records. BACKGROUND In order to adequately describe a drilling operation the conditions, activity, and equipment must be characterized. Of these the major independent variables are the conditions. Conditions focus on the geologic mass and also consider whether the site is surface or underground. As a member of the ICMM, FCX is committed to implement the 10 Sustainable Development (SD) Principles throughout our business. FCX is also a member of the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), a nonprofit coalition dedicated to protecting and enhancing wildl ife habitat. In alignment with ICMM SD Principle 7 and our Environmental Policy, FCX has set a performance goal to prepare a biodiversity inventory in 2010 and land management plan by end of 2011 for all active mining sites. In 2010 FCX established a Biodiversity Task Force to assist sites in biodiversity management; optimize use of resources around the globe; implement FCX goals and targets; and align biodiversity programs with ICMM principles and guidance. The task force consists of Environment and SD Department management, scientists and engineers from FCX sites, and WHC staff. The Task Force recently issued a biodiversity inventory guidance document to set expectations and provide consistency across the sites when developing a biodiversity inventory and land management plan.
