Globalization creates investment opportunities for enterprises around the world. Attracting foreign investment has been a key challenge for economic growth in developing countries. Corruption, political instability, armed conflict, and other internal problems affect foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows negatively. A framework of criteria provides a basis for comparing non-commercial risk (NCR) among twenty-three mineral economies. Countries competing for foreign direct investment inflows are ranked from least to most risky. This study compares Inward FDI Performance Index (IND) with NCR ratings in developing countries and shows that risk is increasingly mitigated by means of appropriately structured insurance. Given the option for countries with similar mineral potential, investors will generally invest in the country that offers lower non-commercial risk. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, slag, metal, entrained, granulation, ferromanganese Water granulation of certain slags with high metal entrainment has customarily not been practised, not only due to the belief that such processes are too dangerous and unproven in the pyrometallurgical industry, but also that it might not be economically viable or environmentally acceptable. General slag granulation, on the other hand, is extensively applied, although in some cases crudely, with disastrous effects, as a result of not recognising the high heat capacities prevalent in slags. Thus, purpose-designed granulation and solidification processes are discussed, taking into account specific applications and the individual signatures of alloys and slags, emphasising that no slag, matte, or alloy responds in similar fashion to a granulation practice. This paper addresses three issues, namely: ? Water-granulation of BOF steel slag, without processing it to render it environmentally safe, physically and chemically acceptable for use by the construction industry, and the process economical ? Processing air-cooled BOF steel slag to change its physical and chemical properties to be acceptable for various uses and extracting metallic and bound iron ? Processing air-cooled or molten manganese slag to lower its manganese content to a level that is acceptable from an environmental and health point of view, and extracting FeMn-alloy of acceptable composition. The latter process culminated in a patented process to extract FeMn from air-cooled and molten manganese slag, and, at the same time, produce a hydraulic (cementitious) slag, thus transforming a possible hazardous by-product into virtually 100% saleable products.

Mechanization in low-stope panels situated in hard rock infers roof support by tensile bolting to allow free passage of trackless mining equipment in the production areas. This is in sharp contrast to conventional mining, where compressive roof supports?such as timber and grout packs?have traditionally been used, up to 1.5 metres from the production face. Bolting is a hazardous operation because material is dislodged from the roof during the drilling activity. Even with temporary roof support installed, small pieces of rock are dislodged by the percussive action of the drifter. Operations with the man situated directly under the drill, during the drilling activity, are hazardous. The only way to remove the hazard is to move the man away from the machine for as much as possible throughout the complete cycle Costs associated with safety cannot be quantified, but need to form part of the decision-making process. Machine selections based on purchase and running costs alone do not justify the investment cost of mechanized bolters. The equipment selection process needs to take into account the total cost of mining as well as the human safety impact and loss of production costs from having to re-bolt roofs in a production panel to prevent falls of ground. Labour costs in mechanized low-stope bolting are between one-quarter and half the labour costs of non-mechanized bolting. This paper reviews the mechanized bolting option versus handheld bolting from a mining process and cost perspective in a hard rock, low-stope room-and-pillar mining operation in the platinum and chrome industries.

The primary aim of the present investigation is to develop a model which permits to calculate/predict the viscosities of ferromanganese slags, typically focus on the MnO-SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MgO-FeO multicomponent system. The present viscosity model emphasizes the ability of prediction, i.e. using the binary parameters to extrapolate the viscosities in ternary and higher order systems. To this end, a physical sound model is essential. Temperature dependence of viscosity is described by the Eyring?s formalism. The well-known cell model is used to define the SiO44- tetrahedra in the silicate melts. Composition dependence is expressed in term of viscous activation energy, which is characterized by the binary structural units. The viscosities in ternary and higher order systems are hence predicted using the binary activation parameters. The model has been used to calculate the viscosities in the whole liquid composition range of ferromanganese slag.

This paper describes measurements of current and voltage done on submerged arc furnaces. The aim is to focus on and attempt to separate from one another the electric arc current and the current bypassing the arc through the charge. Toward this goal two measurement campaigns on AC-arcs burning on coke beds are ac-counted for. The first was done on a 150 kVA pilot furnace at SINTEF in Trondheim Norway, and the second one was done on a 48 MVA industrial furnace run by Icelandic Alloys in Iceland. The measurements were compared to simulations employing an advanced MFD arc model. The main results are that a coke bed does not necessarily behave as a linear conductor. However the warmer chemically transformed part of an operating Si-metal or FeSi furnace probably exhibits linear behaviour and passes a considerable fraction of the phase current, perhaps on some operating conditions, as much as 50%.

In this paper the origins of the mortar intruded concrete concept and its development and application in the construction of watertight bulkheads in South Africa are described. The events leading to the commissioning and execution of the West Driefontein Experimental Plug and the Virginia/Merriespruit Boundary Plugs, and their roles in the proving of the technique, follow. The development of the first Transvaal and Orange Free State Chamber of Mines Code of Practice for Mortar Intrusion Concrete for Underground Plugs and Bulkheads, Johannesburg, November 1962,is explained. The saga of the October 1968 flood and subsequent salvage of the West Driefontein Gold Mine is recounted. The paper concludes with mention of the validation programme carried out for the Placer Dome Western Areas Joint Venture and their South Deep water barrier programme.

The major proportion of South African coal is extracted by the bord-and-pillar mining method which requires that the overlying strata be supported by pillars of coal. The stability of the pillars is a major safety concern. One of the factors which affects the strength of coal pillars is the intensity and nature of discontinuities in the coal seams. Current design methods for pillars assume that al the coal seams have equal strength and are equally disturbed by natural discontinuities, resulting in over-designed pillars in some cases and potentially unstable pillars in others. Research was carried out to determine the nature of discontinuities in coal seams and to assess their potential effect on pillar strength. It was found that large variations exist in the intensity of discontinuities in the different coal seams being mined. In addition, numerical model studies showed that the discontinuities could significantly reduce pillar strength if the width-to-height ratio of the pillars is small, but the effect decreases as the width-to-height ratio increases.

Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the 'fine' and 'coarse' size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: > Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery > Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery > Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for fine, and 'coarse' particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

The leaching of zinc and copper from Nigerian bulk sulphide ore with sulphuric acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide was studied. The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant for the sulphuric acid leaching of zinc and copper from a complex sulphide ore. Distribution of elementals within the various particle sizes was initially determined by ICP-OES and XRF to provide a basis for explaining the dissolution process. The effects of concentration of hydrogen peroxide, particle size, stirring speed, and leaching time at a constant temperature of 298K were studied. There were variations in elemental and mineralogical composition within the different sizes. The concentrations of zinc and copper reduced as particle size decreased while silica, sulphur, iron and lead contents increased. Dissolution results showed that the leaching rate of copper was lower than that of zinc. The highest recoveries of zinc and copper were obtained at a leaching time of 180 minutes, stirring speed of160 rpm, particle size of 75 µm and a concentration of 1M H2SO4/1MH2O2. It was observed that the leaching rate of zinc and copper increased with increasing hydrogen peroxide concentration. Increased stirring speed had a negative leaching effect as it promotes hydrogen peroxide decomposition. Historically bauxite-based refractories have been used in applications where andalusite-based refractories could work. Bauxite-based refractories were chosen over andalusite-based refractories mainly because of the availability of low-cost Chinese bauxite and also because many furnaces were designed by international companies that cannot easily access high-quality products. Currently, the availability of low-cost bauxite is under threat as a result of high export duties and tariffs as well as restrictions on the amount of material that China allows to be exported. South Africa is a major producer of andalusite, and this guarantees stability with respect to both availability and price. Refractories based on andalusite have an added economic advantage over bauxite-based refractories in that unlike bauxite, which requires high-temperature calcination before use, andalusite is used in its raw state. This paper constitutes a literature study of the merits, both technical and economic, of using refractories based on andalusite compared to bauxite-based refractories. Bacterial leaching represents an unusual problem in biochemical engineering, because the substrate for bacterial growth is not supplied directly, but is a product of another reaction, the leaching of mineral particles. Leaching arises from the bacterial oxidation of ferrous ions to ferric ions, which in turn oxidize the mineral. For the bacterial dissolution of pyrite, these reactions are: [ ] (Y represents a stoichiometric yield factor, and N represents the amount of bacteria.) Equations [1] and [2] represent a cyclic auto-catalytic system since more ferric ions are added to the system with an increase in the extent of leaching.

The platinum mining industry has experienced a significant increase in fatal accidents. Mine accidents are in principle preventable, and there is enormous pressure on employers to reverse this trend. This paper reviews safety management systems (SMS) as well as behaviour-based safety (BBS). Based on the review, SWOT analyses are performed on the SMS and BBS processes and a model of an integrated safety management system (ISMS) is introduced. A number of fatal accidents is analysed to identify factors that contributed to accidents in the mining industry. Thereafter the potential weaknesses of an SMS of a platinum mine are exposed and the potential benefits of implementing the ISMS for this case study are demonstrated.

A common problem encountered in British coal mines is bearing failure on conveyor system idler rollers, which on occasions has led to fires. The UK Mines Inspectorate initiated a study of such failures to assess the potential for ignition of explosive atmospheres. As part of this study HSL have developed a system to measure the temperatures generated within the bearings during controlled failure. Temperatures are measured using both infrared thermal imaging and contact thermometry. The work to date has shown that temperatures well in excess of the auto-ignition temperature of methane can occur.

During mining, the stress in the coal face varies, and, at the same time, the gas flows from the coal body into the excavation, which will cause the gas pressure to change continuously. Assuming the coal gas content of the coal to be constant, and applying the law of energy conservation, the influence of stress concentration on the gas pressure was analysed. It was found that the stress is proportional to the gas pressure. Finally, as a result of analysis and the law of gas flow, the gas pressure dynamic distribution ahead of tunnelling was modelled, and the mechanism by which blasting induces outburst was explained by making use of the model. There are practical indications that flotation recovery of palladium bismuth tellurides is poor. This work tested whether this can be caused by a lack of interaction of the collector with the telluride. Impedance measurements, voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy were performed to determine the interaction of dithiocarbonate collectors (KEX) with Pd-Bi-Te. Impedance measurements showed lower capacitance values in solutions containing KEX, indicating the formation of a continuous surface layer. Anodic and cathodic polarization diagrams show the mixed potential to be higher than the reversible potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen equilibrium reaction; hence the formation of dixanthogen on the surface is possible. Electrochemically controlled in situ Raman spectroscopy did indicate the presence of bulk diethyl dixanthogen on the surface. Raman spectroscopy has confirmed the co-presence of xanthate with dixanthogen, indicating that xanthate retains its molecular integrity when it adsorbs on the surface of the Pd-Bi-Te. As a result, the mineral surface is expected to be hydrophobic and alack of collector interaction with the mineral is not the reason for the low PGM recoveries experienced. By making use of genetic programming, empirical models for metallurgical processes can be evolved that are more cost-effective than models determined by means of classical statistical techniques. These methods explore populations of candidate models assembled from sets of variables, parameters and simple mathematical operators, and do not require explicit specification of model structures. The application of the proposed strategies is illustrated by means of a case study pertaining to the leaching of nickeliferous chromite ores. Modelling of the nickel and cobalt extraction from the ores yielded models of similar accuracy compared to those obtained by non-linear regression and artificial neural networks. However, in the case of the iron extraction from the ores, the genetic programming model was significantly more accurate than both the regression and neutral network models.

The Shewhart [X]?and R charts are still the most popular control charts in use today for continuous monitoring of quality data. However, for these charts to function properly, the underlying assumption of normality and independence of data must be satisfied. When either independence and/or normality of data are not present, which is a common feature of ore quality data, an application of the conventional Shewhart [X]?and R charts may introduce false alarms in the analysis of the data. To address these issues, a guideline is proposed for construction of appropriate univariate and multivariate control charts for a variety of situations. A use of this guideline to a bauxite mine suggested the construction of special cause control chart for the analysis of individual variables namely, Al2O3% and SiO2%; whereas, the multivariate T2 chart based on residuals is proposed for the bivariate analysis of the variables. The case study clearly revealed that without considering the data correlation, one may be in a state of false impression about an out of control condition while using the Shewhart [X]?and R charts for univariate and the Hotelling T2chart for multivariate analysis. To compare the effectiveness of the control charts, specifically the Shewhart [X]?and the special cause control charts, a simulation study was conducted. It was found that the conventional Shewhart chart provided lower probability of coverage than the special cause control chart. It was also revealed that the quality specification of Al2O3% is met as the variation of Al2O3% is well within the specification limits; whereas, it is difficult to meet the quality specification of SiO2% on a regular basis.

Milling circuits are known to be difficult to control. In order to address these difficulties, it was decided to develop and test a model predictive controller (MPC) for a milling circuit. A milling simulator was written using Microsoft Visual C++ and used to design and test the MPC controller. Due to the large number of tuning parameters in a controller of this type, an optimizing algorithm was written that automatically tunes the controller. Good, robust control was obtained when the controller was tuned using this algorithm. Control was further improved by combining feedback and feed forward control and by using quadratic programming in the MPC algorithm. The movement of the manipulated variables was reduced by using a novel technique that allows the controlled variable to vary within a specified region around the set point. An optimiser controller was also successfully implemented to control the circuit at its maximum throughput.

In addition to a range of pyrometallurgical options, Mintek specialises in DC arc furnace technology and has pilot plant facilities up to 5.6 MVA, as well as a strong base in process and arc modelling. Industrial processes have been developed for ferrochromium production, ilmenite smelting, and cobalt recovery from slag. Recent work has been done on such processes as the production of ferronickel from laterite ores, the fuming and condensation of magnesium, and the recovery of platinum group metals from 'difficult' feedstocks.
