Surface properties of metal sulphides have a great significance in various areas of engineering and science, such as acid mine drainage, contaminant sorption, and metal separation. In various attempts at producing metal sulphide particles from synthetic solutions, prodigious quantities of nuclei that grow only to colloidal dimensions have been frequently reported. This copious nucleation is promoted by the high levels of supersaturation that characterize most precipitation reactions. Colloidal particle formation in precipi¬tation-based separation processes results in sub-optimal solid-liquid separation, which is alleviated by the production of more highly crystalline particles or agglomerates. The current work approaches this challenge from an electrochemistry perspective, by measuring surface charge potential of precipitant particles during metal sulphide precipitation with respect to the concentration of metal sulphide lattice ions in solution. Electrophoresis was used to measure the metal sulphide particle zeta potential and the settling properties were obtained by performing settleability measurements using an Imhoff settling cone. A suspension of copper sulphide particles was precipitated from synthetic solutions of copper and sulphide ions at equimolar concentrations. Immediately after precipitation the copper sulphide particles had a zeta potential of -50 mV and a settleability of about 7 ml.l-1. With the addition of copper ions the settleability increased by a factor of nearly three times and the zeta potential also increased to a maximum of -40 mV. A decrease in zeta potential to a minimum of -60 mV was observed after the addition of sulphide ions and this was associated with a settleability of 0 ml.l-1.

This paper will focus on two topics, namely (1) an innovative process for the neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acid streams produced during coal mining and processing and (2)optimization of this integrated neutralization process by adding small amounts of synthetic organic polymers. The integrated lime and limestone process has been developed to neutralize acid mine water and to remove sulphate (to less than1 200 mg/l), magnesium and metals. Limestone and lime treatment is the most cost-effective technology for neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acidic/sulphate-rich water to sulphate levels of less than 1 500 mg/l due to precipitation of magnesium and removal of the associated sulphate fraction (through gypsum crystallization). Neutralized mine water of this quality may be suitable for irrigation. The process consists of the following stages: 1. Limestone (CaCO3) neutralization to raise the pH to 7 and CO2-production. 2. Lime (Ca(OH)2) treatment to pH 12 for Mg(OH)2precipi-tation and gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) crystallization. 3. pH adjustment with CO2recovered from stage 1 and CaCO3 precipitation. Retention times of 1 hour, 4 hours and 1/2an hour were required by stages 1, 2, and 3 respectively. The sulphate level was reduced to 1 094 mg/l, which is less than the original aim of 1 200mg/l. Chemical costs associated with neutralization, using limestone instead of lime, are reduced by 69% in the integrated limestone/lime process. The overflow water from the clarifier of each of the above stages generally contains a wide variety of colloidal impurities that may cause the water to appear turbid or may impart colour. This results in very slow sludge settling rates that cause overflow water with a high degree of turbidity and colour. There are a number of successive or simultaneous stages involved in the agglomeration of particles. To get optimum neutralisation of the acid water and partial sulphate removal to below the saturation level of gypsum (i.e. 1 500mg/l), maximum sludge recovery is needed. The higher the concentration of seed crystals, the larger the surface area. Therefore, effective removal of suspended and colloidal matter from the overflow of each stage is required and can be achieved by coagulation and flocculation. The polymers PAC6 and 3095 were effectively used as coagulant and flocculant respectively. The addition of these polymers resulted in a clear overflow in each of the above stages with a very low turbidity.

"SynopsisLong before the environmental movement, coal miners were suffering from occupational diseases that became apparent in the later years of service, and especially during the retirement years. Chronic exposure to micro-fine dust in the respirable range (‘float’ dust) causes various lung diseases, referred to as coal mine dust lung disease. In the USA alone, 76 000 miners have died of coal mine dust lung disease since early legislation recognized the issue in 1969. Researchers believe that reducing float dust exposure limits alone will not reverse the increasing incidence of coal mine dust lung disease seen in the current generation of miners. Trace and radioactive metals are concentrated in the thin boundary layers of the coal seam (Roberts, 2013), and hence float dust includes silica and toxic trace metals. The production and quality of coal is also significantly impacted by the presence of these contaminants in the coal. In the combustion process, the trace metals are oxidized and become incorporated in the fly ash and flue gas. Since they are extremely water-soluble, they represent a significant danger to health and the environment. Coal preparation plants and power stations need to mitigate these contaminants as far as is practical, but the simple fact is that most contaminants should have been left un-mined.This paper describes an innovative coal-cutting solution to the longstanding technology gap in mining – the ability to measure uncut coal layer thickness to the boundary rock layer. Because of constant changes in geology, seam thickness, and seam undulation, the horizon sensor must be located in the bit-block of the rotating cutter drum of the mining machine. Contaminants in ROM coal must be minimized at the source – that is, at the rock/coal crushing cone directly under the bit-tips of the cutting drum. Bittip distances to the rock boundary layer must be automatically controlled in real time when mining in a complex and undulating coal bed. Horizon sensing (HS) technology enables the mining machine’s cutting picks to stop at a specified distance from undulating horizons of the boundary rock. The thin contaminated coal layer can be left in situ, significantly reducing the toxicity of the float dust. Preventing the metal picks from striking quartz-containing boundary rock also reduces the occurrence of methane ignitions. HS technology equipped with pick force vector sensing can allow optimization of the cutting pick lacing pattern for minimum coal and rock crushing, thereby reducing float dust. This technology may enable the mining industry to convert from automated machine control to autonomous during coal cutting and loading."

Many industries base their decisions on the assaying of tiny analytical sub-samples. The problem is that most of the time several sampling and sub-sampling stages are required before the laboratory provides its ultimate assays using advanced chemical and physical methods of analysis. As long as each sampling and sub-sampling stage is the object of due diligence using the theory of sampling it is likely that the integrity of the sought after information has not been altered and the generated database is still capable to fulfil its informative mission. Unfortunately, more often than not, unawareness of the basic properties of heterogeneous materials combined with the unawareness of stringent requirements listed in the theory of sampling, lead to the conclusion that massive discrepancies may be observed between the expensive outcome of along chain of sampling and analytical custody, and reality. There are no areas that are more vulnerable to such misfortune than sampling and assaying for trace amounts of constituents of interest in the environment, in high purity materials, in precious metals exploration, food chain, chemicals, and pharmaceutical products. Without the preventive suggestions of the theory of sampling serious difficulties may arise when making Gaussian approximations or even lognormal manipulations in the subsequent interpretations. A complementary understanding of Poisson processes injected in the theory of sampling may greatly help the practitioner understand structural sampling problems and prevent unfortunate mistakes from being repeated over and over until a crisis is reached. This paper presents an overview of the theoretical, practical and economic difficulties often vastly underestimated in the search for quantifying trace amounts of valuable or unwelcome components.

The use of machine vision in the monitoring and control of metallurgical plants has become a very attractive option in the last decade, especially since computing power has increased drastically in the last few years. The use of cameras as a non-intrusive measurement mechanism not only holds the promise of uncomplicated sampling but could provide more consistent monitoring, as well as assistance in decision making and operator and metallurgist training. Although the very first applications of machine vision were in the platinum industry, no automated process control has been developed for platinum group metals (PGMs) as yet. One of the reasons is that to date froth features could not be related to key performance indicators, such as froth grade and recovery. A series of laboratory experiments was conducted on a laboratory-scale platinum froth flotation cell in an effort to determine the relationship between the platinum grade and a combined set of image features and process conditions. A fractional factorial design of experiments was conducted, investigating 6 process conditions, namely air flow rate (x1), pulp level (x2), collector dosage (x3), activator dosage (x4), frother dosage (x5) and depressant dosage(x6), each at levels. Videos were recorded and analysed to extract 20 texture features from each image. By using artificial neural networks (ANN), the nonlinear relationship between the image variables and process conditions and the froth flotation grades could be established. Positive results indicate that the addition of image features to process conditions could be used as sufficient input into advanced model based control systems for flotation plants. For many years the concept of life cycle costing (LCC) was promoted for decision making in corrosion protection systems. Nevertheless, the application of LCC was limited. Input data was often sourced from suppliers and met with scepticism. As a result final analysis was often insufficiently rigorous to meet the needs of Project Managers in sound decision making. The need for expediency often resulted in non-optimal corrosion protection system specifications. With improved communications and the global reach of industries, case history data, based upon actual performance has been able to provide input to substantiate decision making. However, today?s focus upon sustainability whereby environmental, economic and even social aspects enter into decision making has extended LCC into Life Cost Analysis (LCA). In an LCA analysis energy and environmental inputs into systems are compared as part of an overall assessment. The development of Agenda 21 at the Rio summit of 1992 has challenged the countries of the world to look at sustainable development in every economic activity. This ranges from construction to mining to electricity production to automotive production, use and disposal. The protection of buildings, infrastructure and transport systems is part of the needs of sustainable development. Zinc based corrosion protection has been an important part of the arsenal of the corrosion protection industry. This paper will highlight the use of LCC and the development of LCA with reference to the use of zinc based protection systems in a number of important industries.

Scenario reduction is designed for selecting a representative subset of geostatistical simulations out of a much larger set. Three steps are involved: measuring the dissimilarity between two simulations; finding a metric to measure the distance between any subset of k simulations and the full set of N simulations; and finding an efficient algorithm for selecting the subset that minimizes the metric. This paper focuses on the third question. We show that genetic algorithms are an efficient way of approaching the minimum when the population of subsets to be sampled is large. Two case studies based on the Walker Lake data-set are presented: firstly choosing k=4 simulations out of a total of 100, and secondly choosing 20 out of the same 100 simulations. In the first case it was possible to compute all possible combinations exhaustively and hence to demonstrate that the algorithm converges to the true minimum. This was not possible in the second case. Instead we demonstrate that it outperforms the random draw algorithm used in earlier work. A procedure for tracking individual selections during the iterative procedure was developed. This allows us to measure the evolution in the percentage of progeny resulting from crossing-over and from mutation that survived in the next generation. It gives valuable insight into how to choose the parameter values in the algorithm. Another key finding is that there is a trade-off between the number of individuals per generation and the number of generations required for the algorithm to converge.

Ongoing Outokumpu development in Solvent Extraction and Electrowinning Technology, involving all aspects of process chemistry, equipment and control, extends over a period of close to 30 years. The development in SX started with molybdenum and rhenium, continued with zinc, manganese, cobalt and nickel and is now focusing on copper. The OutoCompact VSF? SX concept, which has been recently introduced, is a honed version of earlier VSF? technology. The Outokumpu VSF? ("Vertical Smooth Flow") SX package includes the DOP ("Dispersion Overflow Pump") units, the Spirok Mixers, the OutoCompact Settlers including their DDG ("Dispersion Depletor Gate") fences and tank farm equipment such as the LOS ("Loaded Organic Scrubbing") tank as well as the CEP ("Copper Electrolyte Purifying") tank. Although the VSF? SX package can be implemented according to several optional lay-outs, the so-called Track version has lately been introduced to the advantage of new plants. The new OutoCompact SX technology decreases the footprint of future VSF? plants. The lay-out, including plant size flexibility, have further been improved by Outokumpu?s new OutoReverse settler technology. Two of several SX plants currently under construction rely on reverse settlers in order to maximize their performance. The Outokumpu EW technology includes process know-how as well as proprietary equipment. The copper EW package consists of permanent stainless steel cathodes based on wax-less technology and lead anodes utilising polymer concrete cells with the double contact bus bar system and ventilation hoods fitted for efficient mist control. The lifting of cell hoods, as well as cathode washing, is done by the cathode pulling crane. Proper electrolyte flows and matching current density further ensure high productivity of LME grade copper cathodes.

The purpose of the investigation was to assess various options for increasing the efficiency of the conveyor belt transporting system used at 4 Belt Shaft at Lonmin?s Marikana operations. The reason for the investigation was to prevent the occurrence of a ?bottleneck? at the main ore passes delivering ore to the conveyor belt system, thus creating more fluent operational conditions. The options assessed for increasing the efficiency of the conveyor belt transporting system were: ?Variation of the conveyor speed ?Concurrent tipping from two ore passes on the belt ?Increase the available drive unit power ?Increasing the feed rate from vibratory feeders ?Change in belt width/belt specifications The report shows that the most preferable option to the current situation at 4 Belt, Lonmin, would be the option of concurrent tipping from two ore passes to the belt.

The separating performance of a pilot dry beneficiation system using a gas-solid fluidized bed was investigated with coal from South Africa. The coal used for the study has a low inherent moisture content, a moderate ash content, a moderate volatile content, a low sulphur content and a high calorific value. Its washability is moderate. Experimental results show that the separating quality of the fluidized bed drops gradually as the feed-coal particle size decreases. The probable error, E, values for 50?25mm, 25?13 mm and 13?6 mm coals were 0.04 g/cm3, 0.06 g/cm3 and 0.09 g/cm3, respectively. The cause of the differences in separating characteristics was analysed by particle dynamics and numerical modelling. Furthermore, the pilot fluidized bed was employed to separate 50-6mm coal. In this experiment the coal ash content was reduced from 23.74% to 11.79%, with a probable error, E, value of 0.07 g/cm3and a recovery efficiency of 98.26%. This indicates that the fluidized bed is applicable to the separation of coal from South Africa and has good separating performance and wide applicability. The behaviors and stress distributions of the inclined jointed rock masses with different dip angles obtained from DDA are compared to the results of laboratory tests. By calculating the block stress distributions, it is confirmed that DDA can reproduce the arching around the trap door when lowering the trap door. The shapes of arching change with the angles of inclined layers. In addition, the earth pressures acting on the trap door shows non-symmetrical distributions when the layers are not horizontal. The stress concentration occurs in one side of the rock masses close to the trap door. Furthermore, the surface settlements are also related to the inclined angle, and the loosening zone in rock masses can be different from Terzghi’s theory [1]. Since, simulations have good agreements with the laboratory test , it demonstrates the applicability of DDA to explain the mechanical behaviors of tunnel, such as arching phenomenon, non-symmetrical earth pressure distributions acting on the trap door, and the surface settlement profile in the jointed rock masses. Dans cet article est décrite l’étude numérique du perçage d’un tunnel dans un massif de couches rocheuses jointes inclinées. La simulation à l’aide de l’Analyse de Déformation Discontinue (DDA), en faisant varier l’angle d’inclinaison des couches de roche, nous apporte des résultats en termes de distributions de contraintes et de comportement des couches, résultats qui sont ensuite comparés avec des résultats de tests en laboratoire. Les résultats confirment le fait que la DDA est capable de reproduire le phénomène d’arcage autour de la trappe lorsque la trappe s’abaisse. Les formes d’arcage varient selon l’angle d’inclinaison des couches de roche. Par ailleurs, lorsque les couches ne sont pas horizontales, la distribution de pression agissant sur la trappe est assymmétrique. La concentration de contraintes se produit du coté proche de la trappe. De plus, les tassements de surface dépendent eux aussi de l’angle d’inclinaison. En conséquence, les résultats de simulation sont en accord avec les tests en laboratoire, ce qui prouve que la DDA permet d’expliquer des comportements mécaniques du tunnel tels que l’arcage, les distributions assymmétiques de pression du sol sur la trappe, ainsi que le profil du tassement de surface dans la masse de roches jointes. Das Verhalten und die Druckverteilungen in den unterschiedlich geneigten und geklüfteten Felsenmassen wird mit Hilfe des Discontinuous Deformation Analysis Programms (DDA) simuliert, und mit Laborversuchen verglichen. Die Resultate bestätigen, dass DDA der Gewölbewirkung im „Trapdoor“ Experiment gut reproduzieren kann. Die Form des Gewölbes, ändert sich mit unterschiedlichen Neigungswinkeln der Schichten. Bei geneigten Schichten entstehen unsymmetrische Druckverteilungen. Auch die Oberflächenabsenkung ist von dem Neigungswinkel abhängig. Die gute Übereinstimmung der Simulationen mit den Laborversuchen zeigt, dass die DDA-Methode gut geeignet ist, um das mechanische Verhalten von Tunneln, wie z.B. den Effekt der Gewölbewirkung, die unsymmetrischen Druckverteilungen bei geneigten Schichten, oder die Oberflächenabsenkung in geklüfteten Felsenmassen, zu erklären.

Variogram analysis and kriging lack robustness in the presence of outliers and data with long-tailed distributions, which often arises when estimating grades in precious metal deposits. The capping technique, consisting of truncating the data to some top-cut grade, is widely used in order to mitigate the influence of the values in the upper tail of the distribution. However, this procedure omits part of the grade variability and is likely to provoke a bias in the estimates. To avoid these issues, a recently proposed approach is to decompose the grade of interest into three components (the truncated grade, a weighted indicator above the top-cut grade, and a zero-mean residual) and jointly estimate the truncated grade and the indicator by cokriging. This approach is attractive as it provides unbiased grade estimates, allows choosing the ?optimal? top-cut value, and essentially works with truncated and indicator data, thus avoiding the use of outlying values for calculating sample variograms and performing spatial interpolation. This work presents an application of this approach to a disseminated gold deposit that has been identified through exploration drilling. The effect of using an indicator covariate is assessed through leave-one-out cross-validation, by comparing the grade estimates with the true grades and with the grade estimates obtained with the conventional capping approach, which considers only the truncated grade as the variable of interest. As a result, cokriging the truncated grade and the indicator above top-cut grade outperforms the conventional capping approach, yielding significantly more accurate estimates. A few complementary guidelines are provided for validating the model hypotheses and for the implementation of cokriging.

The slags produced by the Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) are based on the system ZnO-?FeO?-Al2O3-CaO-SiO2. The slag chemistry is important to the process since it determines the fluxing practice and the operating temperature of the furnace required to produce fluid slag. The paper presents the results of the first systematic experimental investigation of these ZnO-containing slags in equilibrium with metallic iron, and provides information on the primary phase fields and liquidus temperatures in these slags over the range of compositions used in ISP practice. A feature of the slags is the presence of alumina, which has a major influence instabilizing the spinel phase. This information presented in the form of pseudo-ternary sections ZnO-?FeO?-(Al2O3+CaO+SiO2) enabling the data to be readily used by plant engineers. The efficient and accurate design of pipe and pumping plant for non-Newtonian mineral slurries remains a problem. The objective of this paper is to present the development of the Balanced Beam Tube Viscometer (BBTV), an instrument which could facilitate more accurate design for these slurries. The background of rotational and tube viscometry is reviewed and the fundamental principles and inherent advantages of the BBTV are given. The design, data acquisition and processing techniques are introduced and results showing the reliability of the new instrument are presented and discussed. It is concluded that the BBTV is a reliable and versatile instrument for both routine analyses and research work, and has the potential to provide data for the refinement of the design procedure for mineral slurry pipe and plant design.

Driefontein Consolidated Limited has a proud history in the South African gold mining industry dating back to March 1945 with the formation of the West Driefontein Gold Mining Company. The reclamation gold plant at West Driefontein was originally built as a uranium recovery plant in 1970. With the collapse of the uranium oxide yellow cake market, the uranium plant was closed in 1988and successfully converted into a gold plant, recovering gold from repulped tailings dams1. The West Driefontein Reclaim plant utilized milling, leaching, conventional rotary vacuum filtration and cementation to recover the gold at a rate of 200,000 dry tons per month. The No. 1 tailings dam (at a head grade of 0.8 Au g/t) began to near the end of its life during 1996, and the next slimes dams to be treated, the No. 2tailings dam (at a lower head grade of 0.56 Au g/t) was found too marginal for reprocessing using the filtration technology. Alternate technologies were investigated, particularly the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant based on the Anglo-American Corporation (AAC) pump-cell technology at the Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company?s East gold plant which was operating profitably at lower head grades2. The AAC pump-cell technology is based on the carousel mode of operation2. The suitability of CIP technology for the West Driefontein Reclaim plant was investigated using a pilot plant pump-cell supplied by Kemix The data gathered were utilized in sizing a full scale AAC pump-cell plant. This plant was motivated, built and commissioned on the 22nd of November 1996. Incorporating 6 eighty cubic metre AAC pump-cells. The West Driefontein Reclaim plant initially treated repulped slimes dam material. A subsequent change of feed material to current arisings (from the main gold plant) occurred in1997 in order to convert mills for waste rock treatment. Currently the reclaim plant treats a combination of current arisings and waste rock (milled at the reclaim site). The new CIP plant replaced twenty-seven rotary vacuum filters. A comparison between the filters and CIP in terms of operating costs was undertaken, as well as a performance analysis of the CIP plant to determine its flexibility in terms of variation of the throughput, pulp density, gold input, leaching efficiency prior to CIP, and the rate of carbon movement.

This study aims at investigating the structural characteristics of backfilling material. In this regard, spatial arrangement of solid particles and associated voids in a unit mass of coal mine refuse as backfilling material were tested. The materials were produced from coal mine refuse of Zonguldak Colliery, Turkey. The experimental procedures were developed to determine their void ratio (or its equivalent porosity), bulk density and the shape properties of constituent particles. The orientation fabric and the co-ordination number were the other two fabric elements determined. The filling materials were sieved and their particle size distributions were found. The results obtained by experiments were related to the particle size distribution parameters, namely, the coefficient of uniformity and the effective size. It was concluded that mean value of void ratio is correlated with coefficient of uniformity. The standard deviation of porosity as an index of fabric heterogeneity is clearly correlated to effective size. By an original experiment, the frequency distribution of coordination number was observed as binomial in uniformly graded materials. Also, the co-ordination numbers of test mixtures were calculated by the Marsal method and results obtained showed a good correlation between the minimum particle size and number of contacts per unit area.

The molten salts M2S2O7and MHSO4, the binary molten salt systems M2S2O7-MHSO4and the molten salt-gas systems M2S2O7-V2O5and M2S2O7-M2SO4-V2O5(M = Na, K, Rb, Cs) in O2, SO2and Ar atmospheres have been investigated by thermal methods like calorimetry, Differential Enthalpic Analysis (DEA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Fundamental thermodynamic data like temperatures and molar heats of solid-solid transition and fusion, phase diagrams, heat capacities of solids and liquids, heat of mixing, and heats of complex formation have been obtained and are reviewed here. Also EPR spectroscopic evidence of V(IV) complexes and their structure are reported and the results are discussed in relation to the mechanism of SO2oxidation by V2O5based industrial catalysts. Over the last 60 years many different processes were conceived to reduce the cost of titanium produced by the Kroll process. However, success eluded all previous efforts, which were consequently terminated in periods of economic downturn. Recently, the grow thin demand for titanium and the high cost of producing the metal again sparked renewed attempts in various parts of the world to replace the antiquated Kroll process with a more efficient route. The different options to produce titanium are reviewed, classified and evaluated in terms of the fundamentals underlying the technologies, and it is shown that the options considered to be the most likely to replace the Kroll process, are continuous processes to reduce TiCl4 metallo-thermically to titanium powder. Of these, continuous magnesio-thermic reduction of TiCl4 would conceptually result in the lowest-cost and highest-value product. However, when considering by-product salt removal from the titanium product and recycling of the salt as well, sodio-thermic reduction of TiCl4 is better.

Ferroalloys like FeCr and FeMn are mostly produced in submerged electric arc furnaces. Typical for these processes is that the amount of slag is quite high. The role of slag for the process is thus very essential and specific chemical, physical and electrical properties are required. Slags in FeCr process are Al2O3-MgO-SiO2based with minor contents of CaO and CrOx. Slags in FeMn process are principally similar originating from silicate minerals but can have quite a large composition range depending on the manganese ore and its gangue minerals. Characteristic for FeMn process is that the slag is rich in manganese oxide up to above 30%. A common feature is that the ?ore oxides?, CrOx and MnOxin slag are not only divalent oxides but also containing some higher valent of Cr3+ and Mn3+, respectively. In FeMn production conditions the slag consists mainlyMn2+. This is a clear difference from CrOx containing slags in which both two and three valent coexists in slags in FeCr process conditions. Oxidation state of the slag depends on the ambient oxygen partial pressure and temperature in the examined process. Thermodynamics of slags in ferroalloys production are discussed in terms of phase diagrams, activities and oxidation state of chromium and manganese oxides. Further, slag properties influencing reduction kinetics and furnace operation i.e. viscosity and electrical resistivity are discussed.
