"Electron microbeam analysis of metallurgical samples covers a broad field and has applications in the areas of minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, physical metallurgy and corrosion.Some idea of the possibilities of microbeam techniques can be illustrated by examining the following example of a run of mine gold ore sample. Milling and bulk chemical analysis of the ore will provide major and minor element analysis as well as the gold grade. More detailed chemistlY can also reveal the presence of trace elements that may be advantageous or deleterious to downstream processing. Electron microbeam analysis can provide additional information in the form of - size, liberation, association and composition of the gold, the percentage of refractory gold, the size, liberation, association and composition of enclosing sulphide or arsenide phases and the levels and association of the trace elements that may affect processing. In most cases electron microbeam analysis compliments bulk chemistry, and does not replace it. Both techniques should be used in parallel for maximum effect.This paper touches on the origin and history of electron microbeam techniques, as well as the theory behind microbeam analysis and processing. The more common types of instruments and their applications will also be dealt with briefly - more details on, and examples of, the applications and choice of technique will be covered in the presentation.Mosely first discovered, in 1913, that the frequency of emitted X-radiation excited by an electron beam is a function of the atomic number of the analysed element. This discovery led to the development of spectrochemical analysis. The forerunners of the electron microanalysers of today, however, were only invented during the nineteen fifties. The electron microprobe was developed in parallel by Castaing and Guinier in France and by Borovski in Russia, but Castaing's design was the basis of modern microanalysers. The initial area of analysis was brought down from over 1 mm2 to less than 2 µm, as it is today. In 1956 Cosslett and Duncumb invented the scanning electron microprobe, where a beam of electrons could be scanned across an area of a sample. This, in turn, led to the development of the electron microprobe with both scanning and point analysis capabilities that we know today.Essentially, all electron microbeam instruments operate by the production of a beam of electrons from a filament in a vacuum (i.e. an electron gun). The electron beam leaves the gun and is accelerated and focused by a series of electromagnetic lenses while passing down an evacuated column. The electrons eventually strike the surface of the sample to be analysed and may travel through a thin sample (transmitted electron microscopy) or react with a thicker sample to produce several reflected kinds of radiation."

"Low-cost calcium lignosulphonate (CL), which is a byproduct of the wood pulping industry, was investigated as a potential binder during laboratoryscale pelletization of inertinite-rich high-ash coal fines from the Highveld Coalfield of South Africa. Coal-binder mixtures containing between 1 and 15% calcium lignosulphonate were prepared, pressed, and ultimate, proximate, porosity, XRD, and XRF analyses obtained. It was found that increased pressure during pelletization results in increased attractive forces, due to increased interparticle contact areas. FTIR analysis showed that chemical interactions occur between coal fines and the binder, as evidenced by the formation of new C-O ether-type bonds. The presence of moisture during pelletization enhanced surfactant activity of the binder. Chemical interactions between the coal and the binder seem to be mainly electrostatic, driven by Ca2+ from the calcium lignosulphonate, which may act as a bridge between the anionic parts of the binder and the surface of the coal. IntroductionCoal has over the years remained South Africa’s major energy source, with over 90% of the country’s electricity being produced via coal-fired processes (Arndt et al., 2016). Sasol’s coal conversion technology alone provides more than 40% of South Africa’s liquid fuel requirements (van Dyk, Keyser, and Coertzen, 2006). The production of high-grade coal requires the processing of run-of-mine (ROM) resources by a combination of processes which include crushing, screening, and washing (Radloff, Kirsten, and Anderson, 2003). These processes result in the generation of coal fines (< 0.5 mm) which, until recently, have been discarded into slimes dams (le Roux, Campbell, and Smit, 2012). Several issues are associated with slimes dams, among which are the costs of transportation of these fines from the place of origin to the discard point (often a considerable distance), and the potential environmental effects due to seepage of toxic materials into surrounding ecosystems (Clausen, 1973).Consequently, utilization of these coal fines is an area of great interest. Mechanical densification of fine coal by means of pelletization and/or briquetting to larger sizes for use in technologies that require lump coal, such as chain-grate stokers and fixed-bed gasifiers, has been shown not only to reduce environmental risks (Mangena et al., 2004), but also to significantly reduce storage and transportation costs (Mani et al., 2001). Pelletization is the process by which solid particles are consolidated into uniform, usually hard, impact-resistant agglomerates, rendering them useful as a fuel with sufficient calorific value for domestic and industrial utilization (Finney, Sharifi, and Swithenbank, 2009)."

The location of underground positions in mines has usually fallen to their survey department&apos;s. Their usual tasks include: ? installation of a high-precision peg network like the National Survey grid as beacons ? offset measurements to the sidewalls, and sometimes hangingwall and footwalls, of development tunnels and excavations ? offsetting of stoping panels for the calculation of face ? advance and the square meterage of area removed. Other departments build their observations into the plans produced by the surveyors. If more precision is required, they ask the surveyors to `elevate&apos; their points with a theodolite. Apart from the survey peg network and `elevations&apos; these measurements are usually planer measurements suitable for producing plans, sections and projection sheets. When the only representation medium was a sheet of paper or transparency, this was perfectly suitable. However the development of CAD models of the workings has changed all this. Full 3D representation is not properly catered for in the tool sets in current use, and needless hours are spent converting analogue-type observations into digital form. The basic survey models need to be augmented by the observations of other disciplines that are also required to locate positions underground. These include: ? the need for geologists to plott their mapping and ? borehole logs into 3D space ? the need for samplers to position their sample points accurately because the geostatistical models are biased and inaccurate ? the need for stoping width recorders to position their thickness observations to prevent errant evaluation and bonuses ? the need for rock engineers to place their mappings into 3D to build true geotechnical models to manage geotechnical stresses ? the need for production officials to receive updated face ? positions during the month so that they can manage the ? production and utilize their resources properly. This paper covers a new method of positioning profiling points to a suitable degree of accuracy. I believe the method is sufficiently simple and cheap for all to use. Historical methods Platinum and gold orebodies, especially in South Africa, are generally narrow tabular deposits. This made them suitable for depicting on a 2D medium like paper. The determination of stoping or face widths was not a problem, as the ore is removed in a single stoping process. Such 2D representations could be easily positioned using tape offsetting between survey pegs or points tied in from survey pegs. Problems of dip were handled by using &apos;Stope Sheets&apos; which chose a best fit projection for the whole area depicted or by using true dip section sheets for inclined tunnels. Rolling reef and potholes were the common areas of difficulty. Most mines now model their orebody and plan the extraction in computer graphics. This means that the representation of the current workings has to change to support this trend. It now becomes a truly 3D problem. Mining officials find it inconvenient to have their actual workings in single-line depictions while their orebody is depicted with top and bottom contacts and the planned tunnels in 3D shapes. Geological models which form the basis for the resource model and planning process are often out of date, as the updating process is slow. The geological mapping has to be plotted onto sections and plans. These are then digitized into graphics by a draughtsman and checked by the geologist. Only then does the interpretation and model update take place. Potential methods to create 3D &apos;Actuals&apos; Global positioning systems (GPS) Surface mines have been blessed by the advent of GPS technology. These simple-to-operate pieces of equipment and compatible software make it possible for all types of mine employees to locate themselves, and therefore to locate their observations. GPS are often inexpensive and give an acceptable degree of accuracy. Only in deep pits or close to the highwalls are observations hindered. Such technology cannot however, work underground. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) GPR is reported to be very useful for estimating the positions of potholes and faults. However it is still considered as providing an estimate, not a definite measurement. GPR is good for seeing into solid rock, not into open spaces. Inertia reading devices Experiments with inertia reading devices have been conducted on the mines. They were the forerunners of GPS for military guidance systems, and were even used for city navigation in the early 70s. They do however work best with heavy or fast-spinning gyros. Anglogold Ashanti&apos;s attempt to use them were discontinued in the mid-90s when the developers asked for an additional few million rand for a device that would weigh more than 12 kg and have a limited operational life.

What is the role of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy at a time when so much is developing and changing in South Africa? The minerals industry is represented through employers, employees, government, education, research, public views, and even pure political interests. The role of the Institute is to represent the mining and metallurgical profession. In this role the Institute has aligned itself with Associated Scientific and Technical Societies, the Council of Scientific Societies and the Engineering Association. The Institute is also active on the Engineering Council of South Africa.

"I have been involved in the refractory industry for many years and at some time or another I have designed materials, tested materials, manufactured materials, installed materials, in fact I have done everything except actually chemically analyzed a refractory material.So I would not even begin to tell you how to analyse a refractory material. I&apos;m sure everyone here knows more about chemical analysis than I do.However you could regard me as a customer with and perhaps the insights I have developed may help in putting the role of chemical analysis in the Refractories into perspective.For a start, let&apos;s take a step back and ask why we test refractories. The refractories handbook of the American Foundry Association gives four reasons:1. To determine appropriate specification.2. For quality control, to ensure conformance to specifications.3. To provide special property information not available elsewhere.4. For postmortem analysis to determine property changes in service and provideinformation that can point the way to better service.I want to discuss these points with regard to the role of chemical analysis and in particular the abuse of in house chemical analysis facilities. A Colloquium and General Meeting was held jointly with the Mine Ventilation Society of S.A. in Kelvin House, Johannesburg, on 17th November, 1971, the theme being "The Economics of Mine Ventilation". Professor D. Howat (President) was in the chair. He then thanked the authors for providing pre-prints of the papers. After the President had concluded his opening remarks, he asked Professor J. de V. Lambrechts to act as Colloquium Chairman for the day and he, in turn, introduced the three Session Chairmen namely, Dr A. Whillier (Chamber of Mines and President of the Mine Ventilation Society); Mr M. Barcza (Managing Director, Corner House Laboratories); and Mr L. W. P. v.d. Bosch (Chief Consulting Engineer, Union Corporation). The following papers were presented: "Fan efficiency investigation on mines of the Union Corporation, Ltd." by J. A. Drummond. Published in the Journal Feb. 1972. "The design of underground cooling towers" by A. Whilliel&apos;. Published in the Journal, Oct. 1971. At the conclusion of the three technical sessions the Symposium Chairman commented as follows, indicating that he would prepare a written summing up at a later stage: "The tone of the colloquium has had a sincerely practical note about it. It would have been a pity if the ventilation experts talked only theory and little practice. This practical theme has, I am sure, made the colloquium interesting to both ventilation men and others whose daily tasks do not touch so closely on this fascinating subject. This practical theme was in evidence through all the papers and contributions. Some of you may have felt that there was not enough emphasis on the word &apos;economics&apos; as advertised in the broad title of the colloquium. I do not think this was really a valid criticism because as someone said &apos;it all boils down to Rands in the end!&apos; So whether it was a case of low fan efficiency, poor design of cooling towers, wrong planning or low human efficiency due to high heat stress. . . it all boils down to money saving and therefore economics, whenever improvements are forthcoming. The title of the colloquium was thus not misplaced. The views of senior mining men on the production side are appreciated. Let us say that this exchange of views between ventilation engineers and those who have to take the final decisions and spend the money, should prove to be most rewarding." Professor Lambrechts finally thanked the Session Chairmen and everybody who had helped to make the colloquium a success and the meeting closed at 4.0 p.m. In a subsequent written summing up, the Colloquium Chairman gave the following as his impressions of some of the highlights which emerged from the papers and discussion thereof: (The names indicate the authors only). Drummond: It was hinted that the time had arrived to consider the introduction of a South African fan test code which would be better suited to local conditions than the currently acknowledged B.S.S. code which, however, is seldom enforceable in practice. In this connection also, there was prominent reference to the thermodynamic approach of McPherson. Wide variations in the quality of maintenance of, and repair work on, fans were stressed. It was mooted that ventilation engineers responsible for estimating the basic duty specifications for large fans, frequently played safe by overestimating the pressure required, thus ensuring that there would not be a shortfall in air volume delivered. This usually meant reduced fan efficiency and it was suggested that decision makers seemed to lay more emphasis on volume of air delivered than on real eco-

The ability of soils to retain and hold cations is called the cation exchange capacity (CEC). Adsorbed cations, however, can be replaced by other cations through the process of cation exchange. Heavy mineral deposits contain a significant portion of slimes including the very fine clay minerals. In most circuits the slimes fraction hampers efficiency and has to be removed during early stages of the process. Being a nonvaluable process stream, the processing of the slimes is a costly exercise. In thickening applications it might be possible to manipulate the ability of clay minerals to retain and hold positively charged cations in order to optimize flocculation and therefore reduce flocculation costs. The CEC value of the slimes could be a measure of this possibility. To investigate this hypothesis, different slimes samples were characterized for size, chemical composition and clay minerals present. The CEC value of each sample was determined and explained in terms of the mineral phases present. Settling tests were conducted and an attempt was made to explain the CEC characteristics of the clay minerals in terms of settling rate. The scope of this investigation was to test the hypothesis and should not be seen as an in-depth study of the subject matter. A greater number of samples and detailed analyses to identify and quantify minerals and phases present would be required to investigate further the relationships between clay minerals in the deposit, CEC and settling rates. Location and geological setting Exxaro KZN Sands is mining a heavy minerals deposit at Hillendale mine located at Richards Bay, South Africa. The orebody consist of a dune some 8 km inland from the coast to the north of eSikhawini. A geological synopsis undertaken by Botha1 concluded that the Hillendale mining area represents a coastal dune sequence that accumulated north of the Tugela River. The northward movement of sediment by long shore drift currents result in a high sand budget on the beaches north of the river youth and is the dominant contributing factor to the accretion of the coastline and development of parallel dune systems along the coastal zone in this area. Beach swash zone processes and enrichment of the fine sand fraction occurs during wind transport off the beach by ascending parabolic dunes that form the coastal barrier dunes. This process results in heavy mineral concentration on the windward dune face and localized enrichment parallel to the dune forms. The aeolian sedimentary facies processes result in the primary concentration of higher grades in the upper silt-enriched reddish brown horizons of the profile. The synopsis by Botha1 further showed that an additional component of heavy mineral concentration can be ascribed to the post-depositional relative enrichment of heavy minerals due to weathering. Therefore, it is likely that the Hillendale orebody protolith was pedogenically weathered to form the homogeneous, silt-enriched, clayey reddish brown to dark red, palaeosol profile that grades downwards into yellowish brown, less clay-enriched sand. Slimes characterization Samples The Hillendale orebody was divided into geochemically discretized zones based on the concentration of ilmenite and other specific minerals and/or phases. Six composite samples were made up from exploration samples taken from Zone 9, Zone 11 and Zone 12. The red and orange horizons within these composite samples were separated and test samples were prepared to conduct test work and analyses. The test samples were submitted for preparation and analysis to characterize the slimes properties. Each test sample was deslimed at 45 µm representing the slimes fraction (-45 µm) and dried at 40°C. The -45 µm slimes samples were then split to conduct size analysis, chemical analysis, XRD and to determine the CEC. Size analysis The size distribution of the composite samples is shown in Table I. The size analysis shows that there is a difference in size distribution between the orange and red horizons of each zone. The orange horizons contain less 850 µ material as well as less slimes (-45 µm). The red horizons contain yore slimes (-45 µm). The size distribution of the slimes fraction (-45 µm) was determined using Malvern size analysis. The cumulative particle size distribution of the slimes is shown in Figure 1. The red horizons of the different zones show similar size distributions. The orange horizons show some differences. However, there is a difference in size distributions between the red and orange horizons.

The most important event in the Institute&apos;s recent history is the strategic plan, which was drawn up in 1986 during Henry James&apos;s term of office. This plan was formulated at a workshop attended by most of the senior members of Council, and from it has flowed a number of changes that have been introduced over the past four years.

The University of Kentucky (UK), with an enrollment of 25,891 in fall 2002, is a comprehensive, public land-grant university located in the Bluegrass Region of Central Kentucky. As the State’s flagship university, UK has long been involved in distance education, first through traditional correspondence courses, followed by use of videotape and satellite delivery in the 1970s and1980s, but soon supplanted by use of interactive television (ITV) and on-line course delivery in the 1990s to date. Today, UK Distance Learning Programs annually administers approximately600 course sections, with services provided to over 5200 enrollees. Courses are offered via six media: interactive video, Internet, on-site, satellite, open-air and cable television, and videotape, with hybrid delivery becoming increasingly popular. The University of Kentucky College of Engineering experience with distance instruction prior to 1985 was limited to videotape non-credit offerings. The Department of Mining Engineering, a small department in terms of numbers of both faculty and students, was a University pioneer in distance education. The first University degree program offered in its entirety by distance delivery(initially by itinerant faculty) was the Master of Mining Engineering. Satellite delivery from Lexington to Cumberland, Kentucky, was a welcomed change of delivery mode in 1987–88,resulting in six hours less travel time for faculty each week. Shortly thereafter, other initiatives directed toward fulfilment of its land-grant mission were undertaken by the College. Use of satellite for course delivery rapidly declined due to limited interactivity, in favour of compressed video and on-site instruction. Classroom sites in the Kentucky Tele-Linking Network (KTLN) now number over 200. The Network links schools, colleges and universities, as well as public and private agencies throughout the State. The KTLN supports voice, video, and data transmission in a uniformly-equipped environment. Beginning in the early 1990s, transfer-critical pre-engineering courses were delivered from Lexington to Kentucky’s community colleges with the largest pre-engineering enrolments. Success was limited, but lessons learned were invaluable. In 1996, the University of Kentucky College of Engineering was asked by the Kentucky Council on Higher Education (the predecessor to the Council on Postsecondary Education) to expand engineering education in Kentucky, first by initiating cooperative B.Sc. degree programmes in Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering on the campus of Paducah Community College (PCC), located 400 km from the UK campus in Lexington. The third partner in these programmes is Murray State University (MuSU), a public regional comprehensive university 80 km south of Paducah. The genesis of the new degree programmes, which were subjected to ABET review in October 2002, as well as a summary of the major accomplishments and challenges of the innovative programmes, will be offered. The limited use of distance technologies for course delivery in these B.Sc. degree programmes will be discussed. A ‘no-spin’ overview of other non-traditional distance-learning ventures within the College of Engineering will be chronicled, with an honest assessment of the motivation for these efforts and, where appropriate, their relative degree of success. Among these ventures are: a BScME and a Master of Engineering programme at Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Kentucky, Georgetown, Kentucky; course exchange in Chemical Engineering between the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville; an ITV-based Master of Engineering programme for practicing engineers in Kentucky; proposed joint-degree programmes in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with Western Kentucky University; and a proposed part-time MScME programme in Paducah, Kentucky, with a start date of August 2002, threshold enrolment permitting. Significant political and economic changes have taken place in our society in the past year that are going to impact on our minerals industry, and therefore also on our members. Surely, it is not coincidence that the economic and political changes have occured simultaneously? South Africa, by virtue of its infrastructure and technology, is strategically placed to develop the potential of Africa&apos;s mineral wealth. In this address, I give my personal views on the ability of the mining industry to participate in the wider mineral resources of the African continent.

Historical Background. South Africa&apos;s industrial history began with the discovery of gold and diamonds during the last century, and the mining industry was the first chief component of our technological development. During the past six decades, quantum leaps were made in other fields, too, when other industries and research bodies such as Escom, NDC, Iscor, Sasol, Foskor, Alusaf, Mintek, cs I R, SA B S, and A E C were established. These meaningful additions have two outstanding characteristics. Firstly, they were linked mainly to primary activities such as energy and minerals and, secondly, their establishment was to a large extent due to the driving force of individuals such as Van der Bijl, Van Eck, Rossouw, Schonland, and Roux, rather than to impersonal government policy. Encouraging signs of the evolution of such policy has emerged during the past few years.

This study is concerned with the electric potential induced by deformation, fracturing and sliding of non-piezoelectric geomaterials. In experiments, the acoustic emissions together with electric potential measurements were also measured in order to see how the so-called seismic electric signals are associated with new fracture occurrence and propagation and sliding in case of existing discontinuities. The outcomes of this experimental study may explain why such electric potential variations may occur during the fracturing and sliding of non-piezoelectric geomaterials. On the basis of these outcomes, their possible implications in geo-engineering and geo-science are discussed. Ce travail concerne 1e potentiel électrique produit par la déformation, 1a fracture ou le glissement du matériel géologique non-piézoélectrique. Aux expérimentations, on a mesuré 1es émissions acoustiques avec le potentiel électrique afin de constater la relation entre les phénomènes de glissement ou de formation et de propagation de nouvelles fractures le long des discontinuités existantes. Les résultats de ce travail expérimental expliquent pourquoi de telles variations de potentiel electrique se produisent durant le glissement ou la fracture du matériel non-piézoélectrique. Sur la base de ces résultats, on a discuté de leurs éventuelles implications dans les domaines de 1a géologie et de 1a géo-ingénierie. Diese Studie befasst sich mit dem elektrischen Potential das durch die Deformation, Bruchbildung und Gleiten von nicht-piezoelektrischen Geomaterialien induziert wird. In Experimenten wurden die akustischen Emissionen zusammen mit elektrischen Potentialmessungen gemessen, um zu sehen, wie die so genannten seismischen elektrischen Signale mit neuer Bruchbildung und Ausbreitung sowie Gleiten im Falle von vorhandenen Diskontinuitäten verbunden sind. Die Ergebnisse dieser experimentellen Untersuchungen könnten erklären warum elektrische Potential Schwankungen während der Bruchbildung und dem Gleiten von nicht-piezoelektrischen Geomaterialien entstehen. Auf der Basis dieser Ergebnisse, wurden ihre möglichen Implikationen in Geoingenieurwissenschaften behandelt.

Discussion: L. T. Campbell Pitt: When Mr Garrett and I discussed the design and construction of plugs and bulk head doors to resist great water pressures in mines about ten years ago, we visualized an emeregeny when there would be no time for site preparation. We could not however, anticipate a problem of such magnitude and urgency as the one described in the paper under discussion. The paper very clearly describes the flooding and the measures taken to save the mine. The complete flooding would have been a national disaster. The account of the combat between man and water reads like the account of a military operation. It was an endeavour which achieved success because there was a master plan, tenacity and, in fact, heroism. The paper is of necessity a long one. In my contribution I will mention some historical facts and factors that I believe have relevance to the flooding and the saving of the mine. It is of great satisfaction to me to have been one of the two initiators of a new approach to underground plug design and construction. The investigation was taken over by a Chamber of Mines Committee which combined our early work with further research and the resulting data had a significant bearing on the West Drie emergency plug designs. The final plug length was correctly based on the requirements to obviate leakage. A plug to have structural strength only would have been very much shorter but so ineffective as to have become a waste of labour, material, and in consequence, wasted the limited time available to prevent flooding of the whole mine. The figure of 75 lb per sq in. sheer stress provided a very ample margin, in my opinion, but under the very difficult site conditions and the limitations of plug material suitable for the very unusual construction, justified such a figure. There must have been considerable temptation to reduce the safety margin due to the urgency to complete and commission the plugs, but it is much to the credit of the directors of this operation that nothing less than a safe design was permitted. In about 1945 Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mining Company, which was then mining in to the West Driefontein area to assist in early development, decided to protect themselves from a possible inrush of water from the latter mine. A bulk head door was accordingly designed and installed on 2 level between 1945 and 1948 at 4,218 ft below surface. Since West Driefontein paid for it, Gold Fields consulting mechanical engineers collaborated with their colleagues of Rand Mines who completed their design after a few modifications were agreed. This door was never used to prevent an inrush into Blyvooruitzicht but the exercise was very useful to Gold Fields when the high pressure doors initially installed on 10 and 12 levels between Nos. 2 and 3 shafts to enable isolation of one section of the mine from another were designed. At that time the capacity of West Driefontein to cope with an inrush of water was comparatively small because the storage in stoped areas and the installed pump capacity were much less than in later years. These doors together with others of the same design were later moved to the lower levels served by sub vertical shafts. In addition, doors to prevent flood water entering the pump chambers on 18 level were installed at each end of that level, and designed for a head of 360 feet so that water would have to reach 16 level before the pumps were flooded. All these doors were called upon to hold water and it is reported that only a small plug in one of the doors and a 4 in. dia flanged pipe joint failed. The lesson is that in these cases the smallest details warrant as much attention as the major ones. That these were the only equipment failures when so much depended on equipment, is very much to the credit of design engineers, both of the Gold Fields head office and companies who supplied both mechanical and electrical equipment. Until I had read the paper I wondered why the policy of isolation by bulk head doors was not continued as the development moved eastward towards the Bank Compartment and particularly when it pierced the Bank dyke. The reasons have been given in the paper. It was unreasonable to expect provisions to be made to counter the remote contingency that the large installed pumping capacity and mine capacity to store water would be exceeded during a peak inrush. When pumps were being considered for West Driefontein, it was decided that the Gold Fields standard underground main pumps at that time of 1 million gallons per 24 hours would be too small. Three alternatives were considered. 1. Very large units that would require underground sub assembly and dismantling of both pump and motor. 2. The largest pump and motor that could be conveyed as a complete pump or motor from surface to the pump chamber. 3. Pumps of higher speed to reduce dimensions and weight. It was decided to adopt alternate 2 because of avoidance of transporting pumps in parts and assembling underground. Alternative 3 was not favoured because high speeds would have introduced problems of more exact rotor balancing. I believe the decision was correct and in the crisis enabled comparative easy transport of pumps and motors to surface for overhaul and, if required, transfer to other pump stations. The standard pump thus became a 10 stage 1,500 rpm pump with a capacity of approximately 2 million gallons per 24 hours against a static head that varied

The philosophy behind the design of a rougher cell for the handling of coarse feed and for the maximization of recovery within a given time is presented. The application of this philosophy in cells of 22-litre, 320-litre, and 3 m3 capacity is outlined, and the results of the process testing of these cells are given. In this testing, particular accent was placed on the recovery of water as a guide to the recovery of the finest size of particles, and the rate of recovery of various mineral species. It is concluded that a promising concept has been identified, but that further testing is needed for the firmer establishment of optimal operational parameters in a production environment.

Dr T. F. Muller (Honorary President): "Mr President, gentlemen. May I congratulate the Institute on its 75th birthday, and your President on his comprehensive review of the Institute&apos;s 75 years. It is an interesting commentary on the affairs of the Institute that your President should refer to a speech made by a founder member 25 years ago on the occasion of your 50th Anniversary and then say there is no need to repeat what was given there, but that he would confine his remarks to bringing the Institute&apos;s history up to date. To me this suggests a remarkable continuity of thought and ideals-a welcome island of stability in an ever-changing world. One can somehow picture another future President, perhaps one of the younger and tougher members here today, doing the same thing in 25 years when you celebrate your centenary-and again someone doing the same in the year 2094 when your Institute is 200 years old! I hope they will recognise their debt to the early pioneers of the Institute gathered here today. In any event, this review of the fine achievements of the past 75 years is certain of an honoured place in the annals of the society. Here is a record of the onward march of technology in South Africa and a tribute to a long line of mining engineers, of chemists, metallurgists and geologists who made a greater contribution to the well-being and the prosperity of South Africans than South Africans generally are aware. Your Institute started off as a &apos;gold and cyanide club&apos;, peopled largely by chemists and metallurgists who made a signal contribution to the industry from the earliest times. Despite the addition to their ranks of ever-growing numbers of mining engineers, the metallurgist members have continued to make notable contributions. One recalls, for example, the manner in which they rose to the occasion to resolve the problems associated with the establishment of the uranium industry in this country. The creation of a major industry based on the existence of low grade uranium ores in the conglomerate reefs of our low grade goldfields is a classic example of the manner in which a new large industry can be rapidly created through the combined endeavours of all concerned. I noted with pleasure your remark, Mr President, that members of the Institute would like to keep up to date with recent progress in nuclear fuel matters and that members should be given the opportunity to study developments in their journal. I am sure that the National Institute of Metallurgy which conducts fuel research on behalf of the Atomic Energy Board and of the Uranium industry, and NUFCOR, which co-ordinates the uranium research programme, would be glad to co-operate if invited by the Institute to make periodical contributions to its journal. You have referred to the building up of our research organization and its dynamic approach to mining problems. I understand that the expenditure of the mineral industries on research exceeds one-third of the entire research expenditure of the private sector. South Africa is in the forefront of mining development and the focus of world attention is on the achievements of our scientists and mining engineers. We can look forward to continued advances in mining technology based on their vision and expertise. I share your disappointment, Mr President, that the Base Metals Division has ceased to exist; and that there is a resultant dearth of papers offered to the Institute on these important sections of mining and metallurgy. We are seeing some remarkable developments in the mining and beneficiation of base minerals, and it is in this area that I see the greatest potential for future expansion. On 24th November, 1982, Mr L. W. P. van den Bosch was inducted as the President for 1982/1983 of the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa, which represents more than 40 scientific, professional, and technical bodies. Lynne Wilson Pearson van den Bosch was born at Senekal in the Orange Free State on 11th February, 1921. He was educated at the Hoer Volkskool, Heidelberg, and the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained the B.sc. degree in mining engineering.

Modern soil mechanics is generally considered to have begun in 1925, when Karl Terzaghi published his book Erdbaumechanik auf bodenphysikalischer Grundlage (Earthwork Mechanics based on the Physics of Soils). These theories were applied to rocks more than 20 years later and the science of rock mechanics became established. Methods of analysis and design have been introduced and applied, and have evolved over time. More recently, the rapid growth in computing power has resulted in more sophisticated analyses, and together with improved monitoring techniques, our understanding of geomechanics has grown considerably. Despite this, geotechnical failures with major consequences still do occur. This is partly due to failure to transfer and apply the knowledge that has been gained, but also there are aspects of geomechanics that are not well understood.
