Lightning has been observed in dust clouds following open-pit blasting. It is proposed that the occurrence of this phenomenon is related to the physical composition and characterization of the mineral fines that comprise the bulk of the dust cloud. Silicate minerals, which are susceptible to fine fracturing during blasting, generate the initial charge. This is further enhanced by collisions and friction during the turbulent upcast in the post-blast dust cloud. Varying size fractions result in different rates at which these particles drop out of suspension and create a secondary temperature gradient. This results in the creation of two charged zones and increases the potential of developing a discharge in the form of lightning. The ideal prevailing meteorological conditions need to be windless to minimize the effect of particle dissipation and have sufficient moisture toenhance the potential of generating lightning.

The behaviour of minerals in sulphide flotation processes, with reference to simulation and control. by A. J. LYNCH, Ph.D., N. W. JOHNSON, Ph.D., D. J. McKEE, Ph.D., and G. C. THORNE, B.Sc. (Hons.) (Visitors) In sulphide flotation processes, there are two mechanisms by which particles are transferred from the flotation pulp to the concentrate: adhesion to air bubbles and natural flotation, and entrainment in the froth. The entrainment mechanism is particularly important for particles of non-sulphide gangue, which do not absorb collector. The importance of controlling the recovery rate of water was illustrated in plant testwork in which selectivity between valuable sulphides and sulphide gangue, and between valuable sulphides and non-sulphide gangue, was altered by manipulation of variables affecting the water recovery rate. The two mechanisms should be recognized in the development of a control system. Most of the control schemes in operating plants have concentrated on reagent additions, which affect the natural flotation mechanism. Although control of the chemical environment is clearly of paramount importance in flotation, plant tests have shown that control of the variables affecting the entrainment mechanism is also important.

In May 2009 a test work programme was carried out at the sorting laboratory of CommodasUltrasort in Germany which was aimed at establishing the efficiency of X- ray transmission sorting for the recovery of unliberated diamonds in a size range of +8mm. A PRO Tertiary XRT belt sorter with a working width of 600mm and a belt speed of -3mJs was used for the test work. Dual energy X-ray transmission sorting is a type of sensor-based sorting which uses an X-ray scanning system, The attenuation of the transmitting X-rays is measured at two different energy levels, Thereby it is possible to eliminate the effect of the particle thickness on the measurement result. The effective measurement results in a classification by elemental order based on the periodic table.

Contribution by G. Narsimhan It was with much pleasure that I went through D.F. Malan's excellent paper. The following explanatory and critical note has been the result of my deep study of the paper. Although by qualifications and experience I have been a chemical engineer, involved over four decades with problems in the modeling and simulation of transport-limited (heat and mass) chemical reactions in multi-phase systems, I have of and on interested myself in challenging problems in extractive metallurgy. This is the first time I have veered of to continuum mechanics, at the age of 71! Author's reply. I thank Professor Narsimhan for his extensive contribution to the paper. It provided me with the stimulus to derive an extended model. However, there are some inaccuracies in his arguments that need further discussion. Professor Narsimhan's main concern is that there is not a good enough fit between the derived viscoelastic Kelvin model and the experimental data supplied by Güler1 (see Figure l1 on page 218 of my paper). I will therefore explain the choice of a viscoelastic model in more detail and also make specific comments on the arguments given in his contribution.

It is well known that carbon management is essential for minimising soluble gold losses in carbonin- leach (CIL) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuits. Even so, carbon measurements remain predominantly a manual operation with a low amount of control and automation around CIL and CIP reactors. Carbon inventory, i.e. knowing the carbon concentration in each reactor, is crucial for good carbon management. CarbonSense, a novel in-situ measurement system, was therefore developed for continuous monitoring of the carbon concentration in each reactor and paves the way for more advanced control in gold operations. The carbon management and optimisation system is based on Outotec® HSC Sim dynamic process simulations where each process component is modelled in detail. Generated models are validated with real data from a particular operation. The simulator will allow for the carbon control sequence to be realistically tested and the efficiency optimised by controlling the feed and discharge pumps in a hazard- and risk-free process environment. Furthermore, by combining CarbonSense and Outotec® gold courier (online soluble gold measurements) continuous feed-forward and feedback information can be obtained. The optimiser will then define the best running parameters based on the cost function of gold production versus intrinsic factors such as utility costs and adsorption time. Eventually, the application can be installed parallel with a real process island and it can be continuously calibrated with real-time process data. The dynamic model will then create future predictions for the entire process island. The example case presents a CIL circuit, which is simulated using Outotec® HSC Chemistry Sim and operated through Outotec® ACT (Advanced Control Tool) application. A method is proposed for the evaluation of the influence of grout prestressing systems on the support resistance offered by timber packs. It is shown that, in order not to reduce the load-carrying capacity of timber packs, grout prestressing systems need to be at least as stiff as a single timber rise. The method was used to establish strength specifications for the grout prestressing systems to be used under non-seismic and seismic conditions. For non-seismic requirements, the 24-hour grout strength needs to be at least 1,7 MPa, and the 7-day grout strength 4,9 MPa. The investigation showed that the proposed strength specification is realistic in the light of current grout-strength capabilities. For seismic requirements, the grout strength needs to be at least 4 MPa and 8 MPa to prevent extensive damage to the grout during seismic events with a peak velocity of 1m/s 3 m/s respectively.

The Hydraulic Institute has completed the task of developing a new ANSI/HI standard 12.1-12.6 (2005) for rotodynamic (centrifugal) slurry pumps covering nomenclature, definitions, applications, and operation. The standard provides examples of the different slurry pump types and contains an extensive section on pump and slurry definitions. The effect of slurry on pump performance is covered along with the pumping of froth. Reference is also made to ANSI/HI standard 9.6.7 (2004), which contains a new method for pump performance correction when handling viscous fluids. Classification of slurry services is established and then is used to determine limitations on velocities and total head per pump in order to obtain acceptable wear performance. The new service class, head per stage and other limits are directly related to capital and other cost considerations that will affect solids transport system economics. The writers review the contents of the new standard, highlight the main points, and discuss the reason for the slurry classification, corresponding limits and expected implications, particularly with respect to operating costs of the pumps in solids transport systems.

Without minerals, man cannot possibly hope to maintain his present standard of living. Professional mining men throughout the world, particularly in mineral-exporting countries like South Africa, are faced with the increasingly difficult task of ensuring adequate supplies of minerals. The problems of gradually diminishing mineral reserves and rapidly rising mining costs can to a certain extent be overcome by the use of more-sophisticated technological techniques and by the improvement of efficiency wherever possible. However, there is growing concern in some quarters, that, despite the ingenuity of engineers, geologists, metallurgists, and scientists, the earth's mineral reserves will eventually become insufficient to meet man's needs. In order to ensure the continued well-being of the earth's population, it is therefore imperative that more attention should be paid to mineral research and the training of specialists in the field of mineral reclamation.

Robert Rampton Porter died on 8th September, 1985, in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 75. Bob Porter was born in Salt Lake City in 1910, and he attended the University of Utah, where he obtained an M.Sc. degree in metallurgy. Galvanizing In conjunction with the National Institute for Materials Research of the CS I R, the South African Hot-Dip Galvanizers' Association has organized the First International Conference on Galvanizing in South Africa. This event will take place at the C SIR Conference Centre in Pretoria from 3rd to 7th November, 1986. Environmental effects of mining A one-day meeting entitled 'The environmental effects of mining and restoration' will be held on 23rd September, 1986, at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, Manchester, England.

Contribution to discussion M. J. Martinson (Associate Member)*: Application of the simple selection test mentioned in the penultimate paragraph of the paper (reference to a more detailed description of the test would not have been inappropriate) should assist South African mining engineers to make more efficient and possibly more humane use of available labour. The authors mention that the test 'is in use in the gold mining industry', and it would be interesting to know the extent of this usage in terms either of number of mines or as a percentage of the total number of labourers employed on 'heavy' tasks. The paper would have been of greater interest had the authors attempted to relate their findings to the statistics of labour usage in gold mines, members of the Chamber, and to the 'heavy' tasks in particular. On this the authors confine themselves in their Introduction to the somewhat ambiguous statement that 'A relatively high proportion of the 360,000 Bantu mine labourers are employed underground on manual tasks'. To appreciate the practical significance of the authors' work one needs a detailed breakdown of the underground labour force by occupations, together with estimates of quantities such as: (a) total stope and development tonnages moved manually per shift: by shovelling by shovel/tram by tramming together with distances and any other relevant data; (b) theoretical energy expenditures required to accomplish (a); (c) actual energy expenditures required to a accomplish (a); (d) energy theoretically available to accomplish (a) based on 50 per cent of the total maximum oxygen intakes of the labour force allocated to these tasks. Analyses of this sort on an industry basis might demarcate the more promising areas for detailed investigation. Stress is often laid on the need for increased mechanisation to increase stope productivity, but it may be questioned if enough is known about the characteristics, performance and potential of our underground labour force to warrant blind acceptance of stope mechanization as the industry's panacea. Provided that health and safety are not compromised, the ultimate yardstick for assessing any form of stoping is profitability; obviously the industry must investigate very thoroughly any form of mechanization which might reasonably be expected to increase profitability, but it should also be remembered that a radical overhaul of existing systems-which have after all evolved by trial and error over the past 75

The mechanization of haulage drilling in the gold mines of Anglo American Corporation by J. w. WILSON, Ph. D., C.Eng., M.AIME, F.!.Min.E., F.I.M.M. (Fellow), and J. G. TAYLOR, A.C.S.M., C.Eng., M.!.M.M. (Visitor) Some one-thousand kilometres of tunnels are mined annually in the gold mines of South Africa. Until two years ago, mechanized drilling on South African gold mines was not an economic proposition because of the availability of inexpensive labour and the fact that mechanized equipment developed for other mining markets could not perform satisfactorily in the tough, abrasive quartzites of theWitwatersrand System. A project team from the Technical Development Services Organisation of the Anglo American Corporation, in collaboration with various manufac turers of drill rigs and drill steel, has been concerned with the development of suitable equipment for mechanized main-haulage drilling. After two-and-a-half years of extensive testing and development of drifters, drill steels, and bits, many of the problems encountered have been sotved, and gradually jumbos mounting pneumatically and hydraulically powered drifters are being phased into production on various gold mines of the Group. A description of the development work is given, and actual operating results are recorded, together with details of the drilling and blasting techniques used.

A generalization of Gy?s 1979 model for the variance of the fundamental sampling error has been proposed at WCSB2?2005 by Geelhoed. This generalized model can potentially lead to a better correspondence with actual sampling processes. However, a new parameter is required by the new model: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particles?(Cij). It is important that this new parameter, which is at the basis of the new theory, is well understood in the sampling and blending community. In order to clarify the meaning of Cijand to prevent potential misinterpretation of Cij, we discuss the difference between Cij and an intuitively associated, but different, parameter: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particle types?(Mij). In this contribution, the theoretical difference between both parameters is clarified. Simulations demonstrate that, numerically, the difference between Cij and Mij can be large. Some additional advantages of the approach which uses Cij are discussed: (i) the approach based on Cijis more general; (ii) in all cases where Mij is known, Cij can be determined as well, while the reverse is not true; (iii) an equation already exists that relates the sample variance to the value of Cij.

Key variables in heap leaching include permeability, mechanical stability and mass transport. All of these properties can be manipulated by agglomerating and curing the ore before stacking it into heaps. The chemical and structural evolution of the agglomerates during curing is key to improving agglomerate properties and, ultimately, heap performance. It is possible to image the internal structure of agglomerates using SEM/EDX (e.g. QEMSCAN or MLA), although these methods are destructive and do not represent the 3D structure of the agglomerates. A non-destructive alternative is to image the agglomerates using X-ray Microtomography (XMT). Not only does this provide 3D information, it also allows the same samples to be repeatedly scanned, allowing the time evolution of the agglomerate structure and chemical composition to be tracked. In this paper we compared the behaviour of ores agglomerated using a combination of sulphuric acid and ferric sulphate with ones in which chloride ions are added to the recipe, since chloride leaching is gaining in popularity as a chemical alternative to bioleaching for sulphide ores. We tracked the curing process beyond the typical time scales to see the impact that this has on both the agglomerate structure and the subsequent leaching behaviour. A three-stage operative planning of mining operations in ore opencasts is considered. The hierarchy of monthly-weekly, weekly-daily, daily-shift planning is offered. For the fastest elimination and deviations in problematic situations a level is analysed and weekly-daily or monthly-weekly operative plans are being constantly updated. Operative planning is formulated on information received of preparation and working of mining panels. The electronic maps of these panels are considered for automated operative planning. On the data of the registration of blasthole drillings on a panel, the position of blasthole entry, their depth and the number of a line are determined. The geologist specifies boundaries of ore grades by the bored silt. The qualitative characteristics of ores are determined by the chemical analysis of slime or magnetic logging of blastholes. The missing geologic information is obtained by interpolation on the data of detailed and operational explorations. During working of the mining panel the technologists mark the movement of shovels, associating this movement to blastholes. For this purpose technological attributes are used: when was the blasthole drilled, what drill-rig participated in drilling, what shovel was used and when was it worked? Around each blasthole the zone of its influence is built up. It represents a discrete, elementary volume of ore or waste. The discrete form of the data is most convenient, as it allows step-by-step methods to be employed of the scheduled tasks in many and various combinations. The account panel working technology avoids ‘combination’ explosions. The elementary blocks should be placed in a trajectory of shovel movement and the trajectory can not be arbitrary. It’s determined by the technological rules of extracting and loading of mine mass. In linking to blastholes, the trajectory of shovels is simulated by the sum of step-by-step moving from one elementary block to another. For this purpose a geometrical linkage of blastholes is used. At a railway haulage, or complete mining with truck haulage, the trajectory of movement is a shuttle along the front of operations in the panel. At a selective mining of ores the number of possible directions is limited to three: moving of a shovel by idle running along the front of operations in the panel, frontal pull all the way down of the panel, and withdrawal. The technologically acceptable trajectories of shovel movement are stored for the following estimation and selection of the best. The estimation is carried out on mathematical models with criteria on the method of the least squares of deviations based on preset parameters from the plan, uniform loading of shovels, and mixing of ore at unloading points. The equations of balance type and directive parameters of the plan, as well as technological restrictions of solid and of elementary blocks within the limits of a trajectory are the restrictions of the model. Depending on an industrial situation it is possible to choose one of the predetermined models. The presented technique is used for longitudinal shovel bench at the Erdenet ore-dressing company.

Once again we are deeply indebted to you for bringing to our attention a new development in the metallurgical field, this time a technique for assessing the suitability of slags for the production of slag cement, and thereby providing a means of turning a waste material into a valuable asset. May we hope that this will lead to an end to unsightly slag dumps and, at the same time, to some conservation of our local limestone resources. Discussion within this Institute on the problems of cement manufacture, has of recent years been all too infrequent, and we thank you for bringing this interesting and important subject again to our notice. We are doubly grateful to you and your co-authors. Preg-robbing activity of the carbonaceous matter negatively impacts the process of precious metals recovery from gold-bearing ores and concentrates. In this paper, ore heap leaching (HL) using a blinding agent which inhibits ‘preg-robbing’ is a promising method. A carbonaceous ‘preg-robbing’ gold ore with head gold grade of 1.92 g/t from a Russian deposit was studied. Corg was 1.12%. In accordance with the Irgiredmet technique, preg-robbing activity was 65.3%. Surfactant reagent DN was used as the blinding agent. Column tests on the ore HL were conducted using two options. They were: a conventional flow sheet (Column 1) and a flow sheet with the reagent addition (Column 2). Gold recovery in Column 1 was 55.39% while gold recovery in Column 2 was 68.48%. Potential errors in XRF analysis are discussed and investigated with specific reference to the analysis of ilmenite samples. A selection of ilmenite samples was chosen and prepared using two XRF preparation techniques: pressed powder pellet and unroasted fusion bead. The merits of the two methods have been discussed in this paper for ilmenite analysis by XRF. Recommendations have been made regarding the use of pressed powder pellets especially with regard to the mineralogical effects that were evidenced during this investigation. The fusion bead technique was found to be far more accurate and able to meet short turnaround requirements provided the calibration methodology used is specific to the grade of samples analyzed.
